Badlands Media - The Choice S4E8: Humble

Episode Date: July 23, 2026

Ashe in America and Ghost close out Season 4 of The Chosen with episode eight, "Humble," and they are not holding back on how much this finale delivers. The theme running through the whole season crys...tallizes here as humility and ego collide across nearly every storyline, from the Pharisees Shmuel and Yusuf finally reckoning with what they witnessed after Lazarus was raised, to Judas drifting further from the mission he thought he signed up for. Expect a deep look at loyalty, betrayal, and what it means to truly follow versus simply admire from a safe distance. The hosts also revisit a scene they did not get to cover last week, connect some biblical cross referencing across the Gospels for extra color, and share a few laughs about disciples behaving badly. As always, there is sponsor banter, some fun tangents, and genuine excitement heading into Season 5. If you have been riding along with this season, this is the episode that ties it all together.

John Drake told me he put it in yogurt today. that he um he said it was he used one of the scoops it was one scoop and i think he said it was kind of you know mild and then um if he does it when he does it again he will uh use two scoops of it to make it he said it was absolutely delightful so i'm gonna be trying that i'll try that yeah it's a good call yeah plus the the gift the gift set with the cup and the bowl
Starting point is 00:05:09 and everything it's beautiful so beautiful the gift set's awesome great gift idea if people are You know, looking for a great gift idea. All right. So, season for episode eight, what did you think? It was fantastic there. Like, this is the second time I've seen it because I don't think I, I don't think I went back and watched this episode a second. Maybe I did when I first saw the show. But watching it now with like some time because it's been probably, you know, three years since I've seen it.
Starting point is 00:05:41 it's there's a lot of really really good moments in it that I think are worth dissecting that aren't necessarily well I mean I would say they certainly contribute to the plot line but they are moments you forget about until you go back and you rewatch them so yeah but overall I mean the the overall theme I think the themes of the the themes of the season are present I mean the title of the episode's humble. I feel like that's kind of a big, a big, that's like pretty much the big theme of this of this season is, uh, humility and ego death. So, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, I, I completely agree. Um, I think we should start with the Pharisees with Schmuel and Yusuf, because we remember, we didn't have time for them. And last week's episode, we're like, oh, well, they're a big part,
Starting point is 00:06:34 but I want to make sure we, we give that, because we're kind of talking about two episodes when it comes to those guys. So I think maybe we start there. So in the last episode, we had Lazarus raised from the dead and Yusuf's father witnessed it and then went back and told Yusuf and you look like you were going to say something. Yeah, I'm just going to pull up that. You're absolutely right because we didn't get to talk about them on the last episode. So I do think we should pull up the last episode and watch that scene because it was part of it. Yeah. And this is, the tension that has been building with Yusuf and Schmuel throughout the series, but certainly throughout this season, Schmuel's been a little bit of a wild card.
Starting point is 00:07:20 You know, like from the beginning, he's been, we've, in this season, I mean, because since the beginning, he's been, you know, the going after Jesus is the hardest. Even in, you know, the first couple seasons, nobody would listen to him. And then he goes to Jerusalem to, you know, study false false prophecy. and then Yusuf ends up there as well. And they're kind of the, you know, the dynamic of the two, these two people have experience with Jesus. They have firsthand personal experience with him.
Starting point is 00:07:53 They were both students of Nicodemus. And they, they're, they're sort of in opposite places. It seems in this, in season in episode eight, Schmuel kind of looks like he might be coming. around. And I'm not going to, I'm not going to spoil it until we get there. But, uh, wamp, wom. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:16 And this is kind of what I said about his character in the beginning. When we first started talking about him the first season was that, um, he's kind of like, almost like the in, in inverse of Judas in some ways where it's like he has, he's totally consumed by the Pharisees, uh, the Sanhedron's party. false decorum, but his soul hasn't really been corrupted by them yet. Like, it's like he, like he, like he, like he, through him, we see the sinister nature of the Sanhedron and he grimaces that. Like, like he's the one who's kind of like grimacing.
Starting point is 00:08:53 He's the one who's wincing as he sees this. And he's like, this is not what I signed up for. And I think he's hoping that that's just like a side effect and not the actual, you know, the core of what the Sanhedron's about. because he does kind of have this righteous he has this like this sense of self-righteousness like he wants he wants to be
Starting point is 00:09:18 the good guy just like Judas wants to be the good guy but his compass his moral compass is just completely off because his moral compass is built on the Sanhedron's party of false decorum much like Judas is kind of like that too and I think
Starting point is 00:09:36 unlike a lot of the other Pharisees who I do think are fully corrupted in our evil, he hasn't gotten there yet. And so he has the opportunity to become good and to have the conversion of the heart. And he almost has it in this episode. But like it's the, it's the ego death. Like he doesn't have the ego death. So he can't quite walk away from it. A hundred percent. And it sets up kind of this that what we see in the end of season eight or the end well yeah but the end of episode no season four episode eight i'm going to do that probably five more times um there there is a very clear dynamic of glory of god through the blood of jesus versus glory of israel that is in a conversation that they have
Starting point is 00:10:28 directly to each other and i don't think it was intentionally you know maybe it was i don't I can't be inside the showrunner's mind, but it was so effectively done to show, remember when he was talking, I think he was talking to Nicodemus, or no, he was talking to those other religious leaders when the followers of John the Baptist
Starting point is 00:10:47 came up to him and told, you know, said, should we wait for another? He said, don't miss it. You're missing it. Don't miss it. And Shmuel gets so close. You're right,
Starting point is 00:10:58 he has self-righteousness, but he also has an idealism and self-righteousness in that idealism. which is real dangerous because he believes that he's meeting the ideal. And he'd be like, oh, no, no, I'm very humble, obviously, right? Like, obviously, I'm very humble. But in his head, he's pushed, that's why he wants to go study false prophecy.
Starting point is 00:11:19 It's why he, you know, it's why he's uncomfortable when he's talking to the more liberal of the two, you know, Jewish leaders. Because he has that kind of legalism. And he has an idealism about it that we should be stride, that this striving, not for the glory of God, but for reaching the, you know, ticking every box in the legalism ideal and the ideals. And the ideals and then he has self-righteousness about it. And that's just a recipe for disaster. And we see it in this, the tension in this episode builds. And in the moment where Schmuel and Jesus have a conversation, man, is that not a powerful scene? So let's do that. first to make sure we give it all the time that it's due. Yeah, yeah. And I was wrong. I went back, I just went back and scrub through the last episode. There weren't any scenes in the last episode that we missed. So the, oh, no, we don't, we don't have to watch it. But what happened in the last, so Lazarus comes out of the grave, Yusuf's father is there because he was at the Shiva. And so he runs back and goes to tell Shul. And I think at the very end, you see it in like a montage,
Starting point is 00:12:29 maybe that, you know, he's gone back and talked to Yusuf. Yep. But Yusuf relies on his testimony in this. So we can start with the first Pharisee scenes in this one if you want. Yeah. So we have this scene where we have this scene where, well, I think we should start with the Jesse scene at the very beginning. It's only like a minute and a half. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:51 Yeah, yeah, because I think that the correlation between that scene and just like the modern info war is so perfect. But the other thing else. I do want to play the cold open, but I think we can play it more when we are doing the bridal scene. We can we can we can go back to the cold open and play it then. Because I think it's important to start with the Pharisees since we didn't talk about them last week. Yes, agreed. But the other thing I was thinking about was in one of the episodes, I think it was in the, the intro of the episodes of the season was when Schmuel was getting fitted out with like fine clothing. And it's like it's almost like symbolic of his like descent.
Starting point is 00:13:28 into, you know, like his descent into the, like his soul being corrupted by, although you can tell that there's like a little bit of a discomfort. Like he's like, yeah, like, I don't know, this is, this doesn't really quite, this doesn't feel the way that I thought it was going to feel. I think like, you kind of pick up that sense from him. So the whole time, there's all these little hints that like, okay, maybe Shmuel isn't going to become one of the bad guys. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:54 Meanwhile, meanwhile toward the beginning of the show, I think it was, maybe the second season, they put him side by side with Nicodemus. And this is when he's telling Nicodemus that he's going to Jerusalem. And he's like, and I will be studying false prophecy. And I will be reporting what I saw. And Nicodemus is like, you're going to be a good member of the Sanhedas. Basically, like, you're going to be a great politician because you're a snake. But then we get to Jerusalem and we see how terrible the rest of the Sanhedron are.
Starting point is 00:14:23 And it's like he is so far out of his depth. Like even though compared to Nicodemus, he's a very like, political animal compared to the rest of Sanhedron. He's like an infant, an infant when it comes to... Very naive, yeah. Yeah, so, all right, so let's pull this up. This is at the very beginning, and Jesse, and I forget the woman's name, the woman who was healed. Yeah, Veronica, I think, is her name.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Veronica, yes. Yeah, so Jesse and Veronica are preaching in the temple. The word has spread that he raised a man four days dead at Bethany, and there were over a hundred witnesses. They were only witness to the man walking out of the tomb. They did not see him going, which means it could have been staged. Why would so many people... Everything is fake. Yeah, yes. There's a few things happening here. It's like the accusation that everything is fake, that we shouldn't believe our eyes. But then they also, like, at the end of this, this like one-minute scene, it's like watching the authoritative figures, because you're right, like what he's,
Starting point is 00:15:27 right. Like what he's saying right there does kind of lean into what we often say. But what we're really witnessing here is we're witnessing the authoritative figures losing their grip on power. And it's like people walking away from the mainstream media and seeking truth elsewhere.
Starting point is 00:15:43 Yeah, it's also notable like just, you know, authority on the authority of the gospel, there absolutely would have been don't believe everything you hear from people in the temple. Don't believe that it's fake. What kind of evidence do you have do you have? Two witnesses, there was all
Starting point is 00:16:02 of that about the story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And if it was fake, I don't think that the story would have lasted for 2,000 years. Yeah, agreed. If the person wasn't actually dead, he has orchestrated more elaborate spectacles in the past. I was bleeding for 12 years and my faith in him healed me. That's no illusion. Who can corroborate the facts of your supposed previous condition? Are we really getting into this? And where is Jesus now? Will he show up for the feast? I doubt he would miss the Passover.
Starting point is 00:16:40 Unless he has something to hide. The coward don't show his face. He is no coward. How can you call him a coward? When another week ago, he stood up to you and other leaders when you tried to stone and arrest him. We do not take blasphemy lightly. The law commands we put to death for us prophets. You will have us shriek from our duty.
Starting point is 00:17:01 I know what happened to me. And I know what happened to me. He's the Christ. And instead of embracing his power, you feel threatened by it. Because he will be your authority when he is king. And soon, witch, you will recant your step. But what? You'll stone her too.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Tell us more by Jesus. I mean, yeah. that comes back around. Yep, yep. So let's now go to, before we get to the scene with Shmiel and Jesus, let's go to the scene with the Sanhedron where they're debating what Jesus is. And this is, again, this is where you start to see like, okay, like maybe Shmuel isn't, maybe he's not one of the bad guys.
Starting point is 00:17:52 Like maybe he, maybe he can be, you know, one of the good guys. Because I think what we see, the thing that we see, like the glimpses that we see in Chmuel that differentiates him from all the other Pharisees is he does in a way he kind of has like a childlike wonder. He has glimpses of it. He has the glimmers of the childlike wonder. It's like it comes across as almost like a naivete the way that he wants to see the way. Like you said, he's an idealist. He wants to see the world a certain way. But he subscribes to the political machinations of the system. And that. And that. And that. And that. Again, that's what I think robs him of like the opportunity to follow Jesus is his subscribing of those political machinations. Yeah, I think that's right. And I think Veronica nailed it. He's a threat to their power because he will be their authority. And, you know, they're all, I think most of them are mixed up about what's actually going to
Starting point is 00:18:50 happen. But that part is real. That is, again, this is all building to the conversation between Shmiel. in Jesus. And I'm so glad that the show owners included that part, like, that was the part that I'm sure the first time I saw it, I was like, oh, that's great. But now it's like, it just resonates even more because of everything that we've seen happen in the world in the past three years, where it's, it's, that's like, she perfectly summarized it. She's like, this is actually what it is. Like, you're just mad because he's a threat to your power. And the fact that the,
Starting point is 00:19:25 again, this is showrunner invention. This is historical fiction. but the fact that they're recognizing that before Jesus is even crucified, I think is notable. Yeah. And I don't know. This is a quick aside. But Laura Lumer, I actually do know that you saw this because I think I saw it from you, came out and said, Putin bombed Jesus Christ today. And I immediately, like in the spirit was offended by the assertion because she is not at least a professing believer in Jesus. She is a Jew, right? like follower of Judaism. And that is using the Lord's name in vain. And that and that like, if we're supposed to be watchmen on the wall, we better know what we're watching for.
Starting point is 00:20:10 Yeah. And it's even worse than that because she's at, I've actually seen her really grapple with, struggle with the concept of God where people, she, like if you go search her feed, you'll find a post from her from the past year or two where she said, I don't understand why people always tell me that I need God?
Starting point is 00:20:30 Like, why do I need God? Like, why do people tell me to seek God? Like, how is God going to help me? Like, it's a really, really strange post for somebody who shills so hard for Israel to come out and be like, I don't understand why God is so important. Why is God, like, why is, why do you think that my connection with God is going to improve my life or give me something that I don't already have in this world? Like, and when you read that and then you like see all the other stuff she posts,
Starting point is 00:20:56 just like, man, you were just. But then trying to use the name of Jesus to justify, you know, whatever political agenda. That is, it's, it's deeply offensive. And it's like, the, I don't know if, you know, the, because I, I, I, I have no idea what her theology is. But, um, the character of Judas in this at the end when he's talking to Schmuel, right, he's there's a distinction between the they're they're pretty much on the same side in terms of what had just happened but there's a distinction and that judas is like well yeah i believe he's god but he's doing it wrong right like he's he's he's he's he's he this isn't the way that we're going to unite the people this isn't the way that we're and god's like that's not what we're doing like who do you think you are who
Starting point is 00:21:45 yeah you know and and that it goes back to that ego death right that we've talked about throughout this season I think more than any other, is that that not being able to go through that process of realizing who you are in the context of who God is. You are the creation. He is the creator. And realizing that and then, you know, getting to know him through his word and through your life, learning, learning, and that you can't be God. You don't get to call the shots. And that's what Judas is doing. And that's what I think a lot of people that are using the name of Jesus. are doing in the mainstream. Yeah, and for the record, everyone, this is pre-recorded.
Starting point is 00:22:26 We didn't say that. Oh, yeah. This is pre-recorded because I'm currently, as you watch this on Badlands Daily. You're in two places at once. Yes, it came in two places at once. But I do plan after we're done here going and writing a take from the news brief about Laura Lumer. And the thing that's like that's really bothers me because I think you make a great point there,
Starting point is 00:22:48 it's not just that she like doesn't believe in Jesus and she's using him as like this bludgeoning political prop yeah it's the fact that i don't even think she believes in god i mean she made she's made that very clear that she struggles with this concept of like why is god so important and it's like that you know that there's just some there's something about that um and then the fact that she is such an ardent um sycophant for the zionist state of israel uh there's just something about the whole thing that feel feels very very similar to what we're seeing with the Sanhedron here on screen. Yeah, and there's an advocating for death and destruction.
Starting point is 00:23:28 You know, you know them by their fruit is what we're told. And that's, that's some heavy fruit. Yep. Is Thedia in using number one before? We say they are just performances. But what about the resurrection of one Lazarus of Bethany? There is no proof. And rumors like this are exactly why.
Starting point is 00:23:51 This rogue is apoc to this entire institution. Has no one in this room considered the implications if this man was indeed brought back from there? That's what we're doing right now. No, we are strategizing how to keep the status quo and hoping these signs cannot be on this issue. Yeah, like that, that right there, he perfectly summarized what's happening. He's like, no, we're not considering the possibility that Jesus actually raised this guy from the dead. We're sitting here wondering how are we going to stop this from becoming, uh, something that undermines our power.
Starting point is 00:24:23 Control the narrative. We got to control the narrative on this thing. And this is exactly how it works. Because what they're going to do, and, you know, I'm blending a little bit with modernity, but what they're going to do is, you know, they'll come out. Well, we all talked about it. And we discussed and decided, you know, we did, we've, we've consulted all of the authorities. And all of us experts say that he didn't raise from the dead.
Starting point is 00:24:47 And so, you know, story, story, narrative, narrative. keep it under wraps. But they'll say, no, we were all in the room together and we discussed it. And Yusuf just puts an end to that right away. No, actually, we're not doing that. We're figuring out how to massage the narrative. We're not actually talking about whether or not it's real. And Schmuel, to his credit, has a moment here that makes you wonder if he's going to be a good guy.
Starting point is 00:25:08 Yeah, it's like he almost had as a moment of redemption here. Yeah. I am with Kedera. Jesus of Nazareth is not Elijah the tish bite. Only Elijah can raise people from the dead. What if he is Elijah? Honored Nicodemus encountered him in Caperdom and observed. Sit down, Yusuf.
Starting point is 00:25:29 Nicodemus is recovering from illness, but I am certain he would agree. You do not know what you say. My own father was at the Shiva for Lazarus and witnessed the miracle. Everyone, please listen. The possibly false teachings of Jesus of Nazareth and purported signs are the very reason I came to study in Jerusalem in the first place. I have the most complete record of his words and deeds. This matter of Elijah.
Starting point is 00:25:59 I'm the expert. It bears investigating. Pause for a second. Just popped into my head. He's like, this is my master's thesis. You guys are not taking this topic from me. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:17 But at the same time, I mean, I think he does recognize this is kind of going off the rails because they're missing the point of like, is it actually false prophecy we should consider that like and that and that is like the little side quest that he goes on here um in this episode is okay i'm actually going to earnestly entertain like is he is he yeah i'm going to have an open mind here um so self if he claims to be elijah you don't have any more question schmuel the man claimed to be god at the feast of dedication if we let him go on like this everyone will believe in him i'm seeing at first stand even now and rome will want to prevent a revolt pilot will come and take away our
Starting point is 00:26:59 positions here in send hidden and then destroy our entire history exactly this is the future we can expect please caius may i go good girl uh you know nothing at all is this the first time we've heard from caius okay this because we've heard kuyves discussed many many times and now it's like the old the old cryptkeeper is now like crawling out of his layer and we get to see him for the first time because he's a he's a pretty nasty character yeah i have already been given a prophecy from god and i believe it is about this exactly the prophecy is that a man will die for the people so that our nation will not perish. This may be that man. We will hand him over ourselves before there is an uprising. Rome will not destroy us. They will be grateful.
Starting point is 00:28:15 Only answer, he's immediate that I stand execution. As Guyif. He did not say immediate. We are not legally allowed to execute anyone with the exception of a ritual stoning within the temple courts. If his death is to be public and a spectacle, it must be done by Rome. If we move too quickly, they won't recognize the favor we've done them. Aha. Herod Antipus and his court will be arriving in Jerusalem for the festival soon. They'll be attending the annual state dinner with Pilots administration. I'll see to it. The topic is brought up. He is pathetic. And also, we ought not to be endorsing his attendance at the state.
Starting point is 00:29:01 Thank you, sure, our voice is heard. It's not the same as endorsing it, should I? I will make sure a letter is waiting at Herod's compound in the city when he arrives. This meeting has adjourned. This is no longer about God to them, Yusuf. You're just now noticing. I have recently suspected some of them to be utterly void of, of, of conscience. Godwill or true devotion to Torah, but this proves it beyond all doubt.
Starting point is 00:29:44 What are you going to do? Your father was at Bethany for the raising. So, Shmuelas has accurately, like, he's actually diagnosed the problem of Sanhedron. He recognizes here that the Sanhedron is not what it presents itself to be. It is a political machine. It is not a devout servant of God. I love that moment where he is like, you're just now noticing. It's like somebody coming up to us in 2026.
Starting point is 00:30:13 You guys, I think they steal elections. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think the government might be lying. You know, like seriously, bro? Yeah, the government might be lying to us. It's like, what? One thing. So the way that the showrunners treated this with Caiaphas and him saying,
Starting point is 00:30:30 I have been given a prophecy by God, is a bit of liberty that they have taken. Actually, where we have this is in John 11. It starts in verse 45. and I'm reading from the ESV, the English Standard version, which is just the one that I have pulled up on the screen. And the header is the plot to kill Jesus. Starting at verse 45, many of the Jews, therefore, who had come with Mary
Starting point is 00:30:57 and had seen what he did, believed in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. So the chief priest and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, what are we going to do? For this man performs many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him. and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them,
Starting point is 00:31:19 you know nothing at all, nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish. He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest this year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also to gather one of the children, to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. So from that day, they made plans to put him to death. Yeah, and that's the critical part is they made plans to put them a death.
Starting point is 00:31:49 And as Caiaphas said in that scene, it's like, if Rome does it, like we got to get Rome and do it. Like, we got to get Rome and do it. That's how we can make a spectacle out of it. That's how we can make an example out of him. And that's how we can basically exonerate ourselves in the eyes of Rome from becoming the Maccabees 2.0, right? what they're all worried about. Yep. They're way more worried about groveling at the feet of the Roman Empire,
Starting point is 00:32:18 which isn't actually really that concern with Jesus. Like if you listen to the Romans all speak, they're not really that worried about Jesus. I mean, they start to become worried about him in this episode. Yeah. But up until this point, they're really not that concerned with him. It's really the reason they're concerned with them is because the Sanhedron is concerned with them.
Starting point is 00:32:35 And they're like, well, if the Sanhedron is concerned with them, then we probably should be concerned with them too. So it almost becomes like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Well, it's not, yeah. I mean, they're concerned about them in this telling of this story because Herod basically tells him to be concerned about him and invokes the Maccabees and, you know, Atticus a little bit too. But when they're at that dinner thing, and also, why don't we eat dinner like that anymore? I know.
Starting point is 00:33:05 I know. I was thinking that too. Yeah, yeah. I was like, why are we, we're all like sitting in hard back chairs. They're lounging on pillows and, what are we doing? What are we doing? I know. We should watch what I mean, too.
Starting point is 00:33:20 Yeah, we should definitely watch that. So he gets a note. So Joanna's husband has a note from Caiaphas for Herod and it's news of Jesus. But when Pilate asks Herod about, you know, what he thinks about Jesus and kind of teases him. He's like, oh, he's king of the Jews. Before he says king of the Jews, Herod is like, oh, he's nobody. Nothing comes from Nazareth, right? Nobody of import. And then Pilate starts poking. It's like, oh, because I thought he was king of the Jews. Everybody's saying he's king of the Jews. And then he reveals that Caiaphas's note says that he's,
Starting point is 00:33:57 they're concerned about an uprising like the Maccabees. And that's, that's when, in this telling of the story, that's when Pilot starts to get concerned. Yeah, and that's the political calculus that I think Kaifis is playing, because I think he knows if he uses that word maccabees, the Romans, like, that triggers them because they're like, oh, oh, no, like, we remember that episode, like can't have that again. So, like, that's the triggering, like the trigger word for the Romans is the Maccabees. Yeah, so that, that's interesting.
Starting point is 00:34:31 And notice how the San Andreas makes it very clear they don't respect Herod at all. They're like, this guy's a clown. He's a joke. We can't even insinuate that we publicly endorse this guy. So we need to keep our distance from him. Yeah. Yes, he was a close friend of Lazarus. Could he arrange a meeting with Jesus?
Starting point is 00:34:54 I've observed the man. I've confronted him, even prayed with him, but never conversed openly without an agenda. You don't have an agenda now. That is true that he has power over life and death. Jesus, he must be. My father is a rational man, not gay. Even to sensationalism.
Starting point is 00:35:11 I simply want to know what his intentions are. After all, we want the same things, don't we? To uphold the faith and honor God's law. I wonder if it's as simple as that. I'm not suggesting any of this is simple. But we in Sanhedron have been only reactionary toward Jesus. Perhaps all of us, myself included, have been too quick to take offense to his words.
Starting point is 00:35:28 I had not considered the sum of his teachings and deeds is worthy of a fair and open-minded inquiries. Sanhedron is well beyond that. Your father could at least get us to Lazarus, right? That much I know. Yes. And let's go to him immediately. There is a little time to waste.
Starting point is 00:35:48 So in that moment, you see Shmuel is, he's doing the thing that maybe he should have done at the beginning, which is like, maybe I should consider this is real. Now, in his defense, there probably have been, as they've said on the show, a lot of charlatans who have come and gone, right? A lot of people who have pretended to be the one and are not. It's a historical record. Yeah, there were a lot of. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:12 Yeah. So it's easy to understand that why you would be dismissive of it initially. But I do think Shemuel has probably seen enough that he probably should have come to this moment sooner than he has because he, in a lot of ways, has been the driver of the sensationalizing of Jesus in the eyes of the Sanhedron and vilifying him. He has been very much the catalyst in that. He went to Jerusalem so that he could study false prophecy because of Jesus of Nazareth. Yes. Like that's the, yeah, that's the schmule that we've come to see. But there, he's like, oh, you know, I have no agenda. I just want to hear him out. You don't have an agenda now. You just see Yusuf's face.
Starting point is 00:36:57 Like, you don't have an agenda. Like, I don't believe you. Yeah, yeah. Don't believe you. All right. So let's jump to the scene with Herod. arriving in Jerusalem. Telling you, it's because of all these rules, right?
Starting point is 00:37:14 There's God. Magician from Nazareth. Some place for a magician to come from. Who do you learn his tricks from? A goat? He'll be coming to the feast, yes? I hope so. I've been hoping to meet him for a long time.
Starting point is 00:37:27 He sounds so entertained. Your Honor. And so that's Joanna's husband. And then that's like his consort, right? His mistress, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's his mistress. And he's just appraisantly openly having an affair with.
Starting point is 00:37:41 So he's open. So he's open. He walks behind. Yeah. Openly having an affair with this younger woman, while his wife walks behind him. Meanwhile, in the front,
Starting point is 00:37:49 you have Heroditis. Yeah, but that wasn't it like his brother's wife? Yeah. Yeah. Like that's what got John killed was John like went to confront him to be like, this is adultery. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:04 Yeah. This is immoral. This is adultery. And so. So at this point, because he had her daughter dance to captivate him. And then she was the one that asked for John the Baptist's head. Yeah, which. So these were all bad people except Joanna.
Starting point is 00:38:19 Yeah. And so, and Harry did wince at that. I think he understood like, like we're poking the bear here. Like we are, we're taking, we're taking like an icon that people have come to that the people, that, you know, this populist icon. And killing him is not going to win me favor with the people. So it seemed like he didn't want to kill John, but he recognized that he had to because that's what was the request. So now he's all in. It's like now they're thick as thieves because he's killed John.
Starting point is 00:38:46 And so it's in his best interest to see it through and to make sure Jesus does not ascend to power. And the way they view that is like secular power. Like like like like you know. Yeah, king of the Jews and be able to call for a revolt against the authoritative figures. This is from high priest Ciasus. Apparently it's urgent. Lelis. It is nice, by the way.
Starting point is 00:39:25 So I miss chose that. Six days to go. Um, so I mischose that. Here we go. People were looking for you. Oh, okay. This is the scene. I'm sorry. There we go. Please, I don't mean to interrupt.
Starting point is 00:39:43 I brought with me here a member of the senator. Smyrault. You remember me? Of course I do. Well, I'm relieved I had not made a great mistake in bringing him here. And the newcomer to the son of Drain. This is nice. He gave warning in Jotaptha that people were looking for you.
Starting point is 00:40:06 Ah. Busted. I was looking for you. Well, you found me. And congratulations to you both on your appointments. Copernium's finest. Peace. Will you join us?
Starting point is 00:40:22 Please. So I'm sorry. So I'm sorry. So I think we skipped over the part where, yeah, we did, where Mary goes and buys the, what is it? It's the alabaster vase with the word. Nard is, how it's described pure nard. And it's, and I don't, in the interest of time, I don't think we have to play that because we're going to see what he does with it. This is a, in fact, I can pull up the scriptures whole for processing in Matthew 26. Now when Jesus was at Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment. She poured it on his head as he reclined at the table. When the disciples saw this, they were indignant.
Starting point is 00:41:17 saying, why, why this waste? For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor. But Jesus aware of this said to them, why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing. For you have always, for you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. Truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her. We saw her at the end of the last episode. Now this is, it's not Mary sister, sister of Lazarus in the scripture. This is Matthew 26. But they've, you know, this is the way the story is being told. And we saw her at the end of last episode take all the money out of the safe because there,
Starting point is 00:42:02 you know, Lazarus had died until he had had put the, you know, there's money in the safe and most of the money's in the bank, but there's also, you know, emergency money in the safe. We learn it's 300 denari. It's a whole year's worth of wages that she's taken. And she's at this kiosk buying perfume, you know, looking at perfume, smelling them. And, you know, no good, no good. I want to see the stuff that you don't bring out, you know, the stuff that's not for sale. And the ladies looking are like you, you want my finest perfumes. Long story short, she gives her a year's worth of wages for this beautiful bottle,
Starting point is 00:42:40 which you will see here in a second, that is, you know, the most precious perfume and all of the land used to anoint kings, et cetera, et cetera. She's doing it out of a gift of love. Yeah, and at first the woman is like, it's not just about the money.
Starting point is 00:42:56 She's like, she's like, yeah, I mean, this is at least six months of wages that this would cost you. But more importantly, I keep this for my best clients because they want this stuff. And so this is kind of like my way of bringing value and being a useful merchant to these special clients.
Starting point is 00:43:15 So it's really important that I have this on hand for when they want it. So I'll give you like an ounce or whatever, but like you're not taking an old bottle. And then she doubles down. She's like, all right, a whole year is worth of wages. And then the fact that the merchant herself is like an Eastern Asian woman, this is very accurate because all, you know, spices, perfumes, ointments, all of these flavors. and spices would have come from Asia, India, China.
Starting point is 00:43:44 And then, of course, you have the Silk Road. So this is all being presented accurately of what this probably would have looked like. And just biblically, the next line. So what I just read was Matthew 26, 6 through 13. Line 14 is then one of the 12, whose name was Judas Descariat, went to the chief priest and said, what will you give me if I deliver him over to you and they paid him 30 pieces of silver and from that moment he sought an opportunity to portray him. Now, I don't know if Matthew wrote it exactly that way in that order because, you know,
Starting point is 00:44:21 there's pieces and parts of, you know, fragments of ancient documents, all that come together. But it seems like the portrayal here that this, you know, a year's worth of wages being poured out was enough to make him loses lose his mind. Also, I like how with Judas, because I don't know if we'll have time
Starting point is 00:44:44 to show this part, how he is like self-righteous about the 300 dinari that the perfume caused. He's like real big mad. Also, he's stealing from the ministry. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:57 Yeah, so it's like it's, it is absolute like party of false decorum behavior. Yeah. where yeah and it's the exact kind of behavior you see from my politicians today right i mean it's kind of kind of wild yeah this is a tremendous opportunity for a strategic alliance yeah again judas is thinking very secularly like he is looking at this and he's like from a secular standpoint he like this is a great opportunity for us to join our houses right and to immense more power on this earth.
Starting point is 00:45:35 Even though we have the son of God right here, we don't need these guys. Yeah. We're going to unite again. We're going to unite the people. We're going to unite the Jews against Rome. He's still there. Everybody else has moved on. Yes.
Starting point is 00:45:48 And you can see in Peter's eyes. He's like, he's like, why are these guys here? Like, this doesn't make any sense. Why are they here? He's not trusting of the situation. He's like, I don't care about these guys. We don't need them. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:02 Like, this is not good. and Judas is sitting. They're like, oh, this is great. We can become friends with these guys. Finally, the establishment Republicans are going to like us and they're going to work with us. And Fox News is going to report the truth. And they're going to say all the nice things that we wanted them to say about President Trump, about the stolen election, about the J-6ers. Finally, it's like you're missing it. You're totally. And then it's like, why did Trump have to go and say that thing or do? And I'm not comparing Trump to Jesus. Yes. It's the same.
Starting point is 00:46:32 Oh, he messed it up. Man, we need to Santis or J.D. Vance. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:46:38 If only J.D. had been the one responding to the Pharisees, then they wouldn't have killed him. Yeah, yeah, right. But,
Starting point is 00:46:45 you know, look, I mean, like you said, we're seeing this in jest, and of course, we're not comparing the two figures. But I do think, but again,
Starting point is 00:46:52 like biblical, um, uh, analogy is the most commonly used literary device in history. Is it's comparing, any story, anything to the story of the Bible because the Bible is the greatest story ever told. So it's not uncommon to do that.
Starting point is 00:47:09 But I also think it's important to recognize like how like when I've talked about Judas before and we will talk about him more here in this episode. All of us are capable of becoming Judas in any moment of our life. Agreed. And that's what I think the showrunners have brilliantly portrayed Judas because I don't think they've actually portrayed him as evil. I think they've portrayed him as earnest, as precocious as human. Yeah, it's like he wants to be the good guy. He wants to serve God. He wants Jesus to come and do his throne and to conquer the earth, so to speak, right?
Starting point is 00:47:47 And to create this great kingdom. He doesn't understand the kingdom that Jesus is creating because he hasn't been listening. He's just been thinking, right? Yeah. Yep. Right. We have reason to believe that there is danger lying in wait for you at the highest levels of temple leadership. I would not have expected that. I'm joking. Go on. Jesus of Nazareth, your situation has become a matter of life and death. It has always been. They try to stone him in the temple courts.
Starting point is 00:48:29 What we mean is... your fame has gone beyond fame. It's not just many in numbers, but much in debate. Lately, it's because of him. Oh, I'm sorry. I'll try not to die next time. No, it's all part of the plan. Your ruin, that's part of your plan?
Starting point is 00:48:49 Because that's where this is headed. Is that what you've come to tell me? You've called yourself the son of man. Here we go again. I'm not here to contest that or take offense this time. Open. I can tell him. I see it in your eyes. See, and that's the childlike wonder. So it's like Shmuel has the glimmers of childlike wonder that Jesus always tells his followers that they have to maintain if they're going to walk the path. And I think he sees it in Shmuel right here. And
Starting point is 00:49:26 Schmuel has his opportunity to have the conversion of the heart that I believe Yusuf has already and his father seems well on the way if he hasn't already. Because of what he's witnessed. It's like, like, well, yeah, his father watched Lazarus rise from the dead. So he's, yeah, he's close if not. Yeah, and he apologizes to here. Yeah, he's on the team too. I mean, he's sitting here telling, he's sitting here telling sensitive information about the Sanhedron to Jesus. Like, he seems like he's on the team, so I can buy you that.
Starting point is 00:49:57 Yeah, the, the other thing I would say is that Schmuel and Judas, I think, are in exactly the same place. they want to believe, Judas has even convinced himself he does believe, but it's got to go my way. It's got, it's got, he's got, it's got to go the right way. They believe in, they believe in their own version of what's going to happen, not in Jesus's God. Yes. Did you say, sorry, I just want to make sure, Mr. is you say Shmuel and Judas or Shmuel and Yusuf? Judas. Yes, yes, I completely agree with that.
Starting point is 00:50:36 Oh, Yusuf is in. Youssef is like Nicodemus. He stood up in the sand he, in the in the, the battle of the, you know, robed people and, and defend it. And defend and Jesus. Yeah. Yeah. And I do think that I think him and Nicodemus are the same where they've had the right hand of God.
Starting point is 00:50:58 They've had the conversion of the heart. They just can't walk away from their their lives. And that's that. And we'll see that actually, I don't know if it's in this, I think it's actually the next episode, but we're going to see that happen. We're going to see him have the exact same moment that Nicodemus had where he does have the conversion of the heart, but he just can't walk away from his life. And, you know, that's many such cases.
Starting point is 00:51:24 Yeah. Okay, so let's keep going. If you are, who you say you are, what is your plan? The entire city of Jerusalem is eagerly awaiting your arrival for Passover, some with open arms, others with daggers. Do you have an army we don't know about? If you are more than a rabbi, you will have more than just Rome to overthrow,
Starting point is 00:51:49 but also many religious leaders. They will not join you in your quest. Perhaps you can help them do so. This is the week. Rabbi Shmuel, what would you like to see? Regardless of who, what is your hope for a Messiah? This is the moment right here. To usher in a new Davidic kingdom that drives out our oppressors
Starting point is 00:52:27 and restores justice and glory for Israel. Glory? Yes, on a glorious throne with prosperity for all, a new golden age, with Israel as the light to the nation. revealing God to the peoples of the world. And you, what will you do in that day? Worship, serve, I hope. How could I possibly know until that day comes?
Starting point is 00:52:57 I will tell you, when the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. goats and will replace the sheep on the right the goats on the left then the king will say to those on his right come you who are blessed by my father inherit the
Starting point is 00:53:32 kingdom that has been prepared for you from the foundation of the world for I was hungry and you gave me food I was thirsty and you gave me drink I was a stranger and you welcomed me I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me. And the righteous will answer him saying, Lord, when did we do these things for you?
Starting point is 00:54:07 Then the king will answer, truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, my brothers, you did it to me. will say to those on his left, depart from me, for I was hungry. You gave me no food. I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink. I was a stranger, and you did not welcome me, naked, and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison, and you did not visit me. Then they will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, or a stranger, or nether? Or nether. Or nether. naked or sick or in prison and did not minister to you.
Starting point is 00:54:55 Then he will answer them saying, as you did not do it to one of the least of these. You did not do it to me. Pause it. So the chapter ends with one more verse and they chose not to include it. So that's interesting. The verse is, and these will go away into a. eternal punishment but the righteous into eternal life. Just say it.
Starting point is 00:55:31 Yeah, that's interesting. I love how the summation that Shmiel gives includes the word golden age. I love that, again, like, I think he's like very earnest when he's saying this stuff. I think he is actually being in his own mind. He's being humble. Like Jesus asked, what are you going to do? And this, like, are you going to be, are you going to be an important person? Kind of like the brothers of thunder wanted.
Starting point is 00:56:01 Right. And he's like, oh, I'm just going to be a humble servant, whatever, whatever is required of me. But to your point, like the part that I think made Jesus wince and just recoil was when he said the glory, like, glory. Like, that's what he's seeking is glory for the kingdom. God will not share his glory with another. And elevating, believing that.
Starting point is 00:56:23 that you are deservant of of glory as part of the problem. Certainly in this context. It's a big part of the problem. It is in fact the whole problem. If everybody just recognized that God
Starting point is 00:56:38 was the sovereign creator of the world, the master of the universe and you know, stop trying to play his role then we'd be done. We'd be done with this game, but we're not, you know. Yes. It's not true.
Starting point is 00:56:53 Stop trying to tell everyone else that the prophecy is upon us because you say so, not because God says so, right? Yeah. So that passage was Matthew 25 beginning in verse 31 and verse 46, which is the one that I read that the showrunners chose to omit. That verse is found in all major translations. So it's not like just in, it's just an extra verse. It's no.
Starting point is 00:57:16 Interesting. And so now we're going to see like this, this is this really beautiful moment where. where Shmuel almost got there. And then he fell short because he missed the mark. Jesus, Jesus gave him the layup. He threw the ball in the air and all he had to do is just put it down in the hoop. And he couldn't do it.
Starting point is 00:57:36 And now we're going to see both Judas and Shmuel have this moment of like triggering because they don't understand. Frankly, I don't think any of these people in this room really understand what's about to happen. and they clearly don't. I'm not even sure if Mary understands what she's doing when she's doing it. But, but, but. Yeah, I don't, I don't think that she knows what, that she's preparing his body for burial,
Starting point is 00:58:04 but she is. And that is another moment that we see in the cold open. In fact, before we do this, maybe we should play the cold open now. Okay. Because after we finish this scene, I want to go to the bridal scene. Okay.
Starting point is 00:58:20 Yeah, it's a good idea. Let's go and do there. It's really, really important to the entire story of Jesus. This is King David returning. I'm sorry, did you say pause it? No, I said this is King David. This is, you know, in the time of King David, King David returning from war with the Amalekites, I think, is what they say. When he's talking to his wife a little bit later in the scene,
Starting point is 00:59:06 which we'll play that too. So that's, we're gone back in time. It's also really interesting. I mean, this isn't going to make sense yet. For those you haven't seen the next episode, because this is total foreshadowing of what's about to happen to Jesus. And the fact that they're glorifying, they're giving glory to David that is then also given to Jesus. And it's like there's a little bit of parallel there between what's happening here in the scene and what just happened in that conversation between,
Starting point is 01:00:08 well and uh and jesus and it's fulfillment of prophecy yep and you're my boy home at last is it over the ammonites are defeated abigail and not a moment too soon it's almost passover has the lamb been selected and approved by the levites this morning the rights been performed they didn't say i can no no i want to do it daniel come with me here it is this is our lamb exactly one year old spotless the Passover is in six days which means today is the day we have to anoint to speak but why are because he's going to come live with us in our house for five days we have to mark him as special and keep him clean understand clean yes because after five days you're going to offer him as a sacrifice to atone for our sins the oil smells good right
Starting point is 01:01:52 oil he puts on the lamb, right? Is the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover, but he passed over the houses of the people of Israel and Egypt to instruct the Egyptians but spared our houses. Even the royal family eats unleavened bread during Passover. When God redeemed our people and set this tree in Egypt through Moses, our ancestors had to leave so fast that there was no time to let the bread rise. So they took their dough before the yeast was added.
Starting point is 01:02:24 and carried it on their shoulders in kneading balls, bound up in cloaks. God commanded us never to forget. I have one more Passover story to tell you. One that goes all the way back to that very day, they left with no time to let the bread rise. This is a bright. Same box. Yep, same bridle.
Starting point is 01:02:50 Yeah. That, of course, is the same bridle that Joseph gives Jesus, and we see it in a different flashback earlier. I think it's this season. Yes. Uh, season three, I think. Might have been season three. Yeah, it was, it was in last season.
Starting point is 01:03:04 Um, but that's going to come back around here at the end of the episode. And, uh, because there's two scenes we'll, we'll show, um, which I think is where we'll go next. But the, the lamb being selected and having his feet anointed, you know, six days before being sacrificed to atone for the sins, um, is not, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, It's not just a cool story. It's what we're watching happen. Yeah. And again, he barely put any oil in the lamb.
Starting point is 01:03:40 Like the lamb got almost no oil compared to what we're about to see. Yeah. It's Mary. This is a hard teaching. I do not know how to make it less so. The son of man, the Messiah, is identified with the lowest of all people. The hungry, the poor.
Starting point is 01:04:04 The stranger. That's what I've been preaching from my opening sentence on the mountain. But what of other Torah requirements and traditions upheld by our forefather? The Prophet Micah distilled such things down to their essence, and you overlooked it. He has told you, O man, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God? Yes, but how do you harmonize that with the parting conclusion? of Kohelet in the Ketuvim. The end of the matter, all has been heard,
Starting point is 01:04:39 fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. A new commandment I give you that you love one another, just as I have loved you. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples, that you have love for one another.
Starting point is 01:04:56 What of the temple, the sacrifices, the law, the feasts. Laura Luma, most affected, by the way. We're not keeping these how nations will know we are God's people. The temple, the sacrifices, the law, the feasts, all fulfilled in me. You would do away with them? I said, fulfilled, not done away. I don't understand the difference.
Starting point is 01:05:20 Keeping the law is in response to God's love. The Micah verse that was cited is Micah 6-8. The New Commandment I give to you that you love one another is John 13, 34, and 35 and when schmuel is referring to the obedience to um Torah honoring the law through the ketubim i think he said uh refer to ecclesiastes 12 verses 13 and 14 okay yeah and you you have more than any other person i've spoke to about this you have really like hammered this point home the the idea of um the uh the old testament being fulfilled in jesus um and And Shmuel can't wrap his head around it.
Starting point is 01:06:06 He certainly can't understand. He doesn't understand the point that Jesus is trying to make. Because I don't understand we're supposed to care about people. We're supposed to love people. We're supposed to care about the poor. But he really can't understand the idea of what's the difference between doing away with the Old Testament and the idea that it's being fulfilled in you. Obviously, he's being told us for the first time.
Starting point is 01:06:27 So he's still like processing it. But you can see how confused he is by the whole thing. Absolutely, yeah. Before, but now the time. Yeah, I was just going to say, before we move on, I just looked at the clock. Let's take a quick moment in here from our sponsor. Sure. Sorry, it's so easy to get swept away in the show. Yeah, it is.
Starting point is 01:06:51 This episode of The Choice is brought to you by Cacao Bliss from Earth Echo, a ceremonial grade cacao drink with seven superfoods that lower appetite, boost focus, and calm anxiety. Raise your hand if you start every morning with coffee. My hand is raised. Researchers at Johns Hopkins found that thio bromine, the natural compounding cacao, gives you up to six times longer lasting energy than caffeine. No jitters or crash. And drinking cacao as a morning ritual is over 5,000 years old.
Starting point is 01:07:21 Perfect for this show. Today's sponsor has brought that ancient habit into the modern world, and it tastes like hot chocolate. Most people have never heard this. The cuna people in Panama drink five. cups of raw cacao every single day. Harvard researchers discovered their rates of cardiovascular problems are nine times lower than Americans, and cancer rates are 15 times lower. Their energy, weight, and mental clarity stay remarkably strong into old age. The reason is flavanol's. Natural compounds in
Starting point is 01:07:50 raw cacao that modern chocolate processing almost completely destroys. Research shows high flavinol cacao can just can increase stem cell counts by up to 220 percent and improve blood vessel function by up to 47 percent but you need the real ceremonial grade form learn more and get your special discount and free shipping today at try cacao bliss dot com slash badlands try cacao bliss t r y cacea a co b l i s dot com slash badlands and um i drink it i it's it's really grown on me i had a you know kind of I'm an honest like, this is kind of earthy. It's, you know, a little, it's, I have figured out my routine with Cacao Bliss. I'm really, really enjoying it.
Starting point is 01:08:34 John was like, you've got to put it in with the coffee. And, oh my goodness, it's like having a mocha in the morning, but I'm getting all these superfoods and all sorts of good stuff. And like I mentioned at the top of the show, John Drake told me to put it in yogurt. And I'm definitely, that's, that's just sounds like heaven. Yeah, I'm going to try it tomorrow morning. Yeah. Yeah, and it's worth noting Gustavo Petro, clubian president, just filed a lawsuit, just filed a lawsuit to nullify their elections because citing gross fraud. The thing he's done with the cocaine farmers is he's made a huge point about you can.
Starting point is 01:09:12 I'm not right. I'm going with that. Yeah, yeah. So the DEA apparently likes to burn cocaine farms or like drop herbicides on him. His point that he's made throughout his presidency is that that doesn't kill the cocaine plant. It kills everything else, but the cocaine plant is very resilient, so it will come back. The only way to get rid of a cocaine farm is to go in and rip it up by the roots, every single plant. And the only way to do that is to convince the farmer to do it.
Starting point is 01:09:39 And so what he's done is he's created, like, incentivize the farmers to do that and then replace those cocaine plants with cacao plants. Let's go. I remember you telling this story. forget what but I think it was a geopolitics with ghost but with the guys with the fanny packs yeah oh yeah yeah Columbus Columbus's brother on the fourth voyage that was there it was it wasn't called yeah the fourth voyage Columbus got super sick so he was bedridden so his brother took over his captain and then he was keeping the captain's log and they all got hot and that yeah and that was when they landed um in modern-day Columbia and they met they met the natives and the natives were just totally naked except for having a little
Starting point is 01:10:21 fanny pack and they were just sit there the whole time they were talking and they were rubbing something in their teeth and they were like what is that they keep rubbing in their teeth and they're like man those guys are the dickens look how fast they are super fast and they're always and they're always and they're always they're talking a million miles an hour yeah but it was cocaine they're rubbing into their that's what it was for those you don't understand but that won't be a problem anymore because as you just said they're going to rip up all the cocaine plants and replace them with cacao get in at the ground floor try cacao list.com slash badlands seriously though it's it's a fantastic product and as we said earlier in the show if you are looking for a gift for somebody this is a
Starting point is 01:11:04 great one um the the the you know bowl there's so the the cacao comes in a bag but then there's got this bowl it's like this wooden lid and it's you know pottery ceramic bowl wooden lid and then a really cool cup that goes with it and a little scooper hand wooden wooden spoon thingy it's a great gift. Yeah. Oh, and a blender thing. It comes with a blender too. Yeah. And the presentation is beautiful.
Starting point is 01:11:27 Like it's like it's a fantastic. It's like a really easy present, I feel like if you're, if you need like a good present because sometimes presents are hard. Like sometimes it's like I had to stop giving my dad ties years ago because I was just my go to was ties because he wore ties every single day for work. and then he got a job where he didn't have to go to the office every day. He was just managing people like trial lawyers. And so he didn't have to go to court.
Starting point is 01:11:53 And so he stopped wearing ties. And then I was like, I had to stop getting him ties. So now I get him books because he loves to read. But maybe I'm going to get him a cacao set. I bet he'd like it. Yeah. I bet he would like it. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:12:07 All right. So back into it. Let's finish. So now we can now we can give this scene the, this moment in the scene. the attention it deserves. Yes. Here, there is... What does the matter?
Starting point is 01:12:32 What have you been? You were saying about the law. She was like, whatever, whatever, lady. She's a woman. Yeah, he has no respect to women. What is my sister? I'm sorry, who is this? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:58 Mary. Everyone's like, wow. That is a strong, strong. Yeah, and Judas knows what it is just by smelling it. Yeah, because he's... What are you doing? There you go. He's just dowsing a minute.
Starting point is 01:13:19 You're letting her sister touch his feet that's degrading. Have you heard nothing of what the teacher has said? She's not... She's uncovering her. This is enough. It's obscene. Jesus. Once again, Schmoly.
Starting point is 01:13:37 There is no law in Toraq commanding that a woman cover her hair. That's just tradition. You're commending her? Excuseing her? Shmuel, you don't know this family. It's not our place. Blessed are you, king of the universe. For you have done all things well.
Starting point is 01:14:02 You say, Fernand, we need to leave. No. Madhishmuel, I understand. We have performing an inappropriate act openly without shame. And he is allowing it while being called God. We can't be found out for having witnessed it and done nothing. An open investigation, you said. Let's see what he says.
Starting point is 01:14:18 pure and heart of the highest quality what troubles you Judas Jesus is absolute disgust right now with Judas
Starting point is 01:14:33 where he's like he's like you too he's like Shmuel's sitting here making a fool of himself with doing this like righteous indignation bit you know
Starting point is 01:14:43 and Judas is like if we sold it I'd be able to pinch a bunch of off the top, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, right? Well, and there is that scene where when they leave, um,
Starting point is 01:14:56 I think it's when they leave, I can't remember when they leave Bethany or when they leave Jerusalem, Jesus asks, uh, Judas says, you paid the innkeeper, right? And Jesus is like, uh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I paid him. There was like this week, this kind of moment where it's like Jesus knows, like Jesus knows what he's doing. Like, he knows he's stealing the money, but you just glad to do it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, It's like that's where. He can see it in like when he's dealing with any of these people throughout the experience,
Starting point is 01:15:26 you know, the way that this is portrayed, the way that he is portrayed to us in this, is that he knows he can see that there's some childlike faith in Nicodemus. But he also knows that Nicodemus isn't going to come with him, right? He can see that Shmuel has an earnest longing in his eyes. He also knows the way this is going to go. And Judas, you know, like we've talked about a bunch, we don't have an origin story of him in scripture. He kind of shows up. He crashes the party, right?
Starting point is 01:15:57 Maybe. I mean, there has to be Judas for the story, you know, Judas has to be in the story. But Jesus knows, looking at him, that his motivations are off. Notice how he doesn't do the redirect and re-instruction like he does with Peter or he does with John. Or he does, right? Like, Jesus doesn't spend a bunch of time trying to make Judas see the error of his ways. Yep. And how this is told.
Starting point is 01:16:25 But he spent, it's the rest of them through. Remember, he made them plow that field for the Samaritan cripple? Yep. Right? Like, where he hasn't done any of that with Judas. Yeah. And it's kind of amazing that Judas as like smart as he, because he's clearly a very intelligent, smart, discerning guy. how is he not pieced together the fact that like how has he not heard the story of Nathaniel being under being under the fig being under the tree and Jesus saw him in that moment right like he was there with him in that moment do you really think he doesn't know that you've been taking the money bro like like like do you not like how do you not how do you not p after everything you've witnessed how have you not pieced that together that he knows what you're doing and he's just letting you do it like how do you not figure that out and that's why like
Starting point is 01:17:14 in this moment, they're going to confront Jesus right here about hypocrisy. They're going to be like, you're a hypocrite. And this could have been something that we could have used to fund the ministry or to help the poor or whatever. But it's like, bro, you are a thief, Judas, and you, Shmuel are a Pharisee. So, like, you sit there and you are put in fine threads
Starting point is 01:17:39 and live a very, like, lavish lifestyle while you are surrounded by, poor people who you refuse to even consort with and you just said wait I have to be like I have to care about poor people he just said that three seconds ago he was like I had to care about poor people you know so it's like this is so contrived
Starting point is 01:17:58 like their outrage here is so fake and so phony and so contrived and that's where like it doesn't land and then again everyone in the room I don't think understands that Jesus is literally about to die and that this is the last time they're going to really be with him or
Starting point is 01:18:13 one of the last times they're all going to be certainly in this setting and this group with this large so anointed the you know the week before sacrifice like in the flashback at the beginning yep why was the so he not sold for hundreds of denari
Starting point is 01:18:40 you just told a story about how caring for the poor is he can do caring for the Messiah yes it could have been given to the poor it's going to be used for anything supplies shelters things we need but this This is a waste. Where did you get this money, Mary?
Starting point is 01:18:59 Leave her alone. She has done a beautiful thing to me. For you will always have the poor with you. And whatever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could. She has anointed my body beforehand for burial. Burial.
Starting point is 01:19:33 Burial? Is that me? Shh. Let him finish. And believe me, wherever the gospel is proclaimed, and in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her. What your follower said is right. This act was wasteful, immodest,
Starting point is 01:19:51 and completely contradicts everything you said before about the poor and lowly. He said they will always be with us. The very notion that such a disgrace could be proclaimed throughout the world as part of your gospel, when instead it should be reproached, rebuked, and condemned. It's, I can't be in the same room
Starting point is 01:20:10 disabomination. Sounds like a personal problem. I wanted to believe. I came here to give you a chance and you've ruined it. I'm sorry, I couldn't help you. I'm sorry, I couldn't help you. Did come back, Strel. Yeah, I keep laughing every time Schmuel says something, I don't, like, I don't mean to make light of like something that's supposed to be very serious. Uh, I just can't help but look at Schmuel. see so many people in the modern age who act this exact same way, who walk around the same air of like righteousness, superiority, et cetera, and totally missed the mark and just totally are missing it. And then turn around and store them out of the room thinking that they're right.
Starting point is 01:21:03 And it's like, yeah, you're probably not. Yeah, agreed. thereby that is not a man we want to upset if we try and unite a No Judas this is this is the guy you don't want to upset Judas dude you are such a dummy like for a guy as smart as he is he just told the son of God like this is not somebody that we want to upset oh no oh no and Jesus has known Shul longer than he's known Judas so who does you Like in the in the show. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:43 How, who does he think he is? But you know what he reminds me of? Did you see the movie? Of course you. I hope you've seen this movie. Coneheads. Yeah, yeah, of course. You know the Dana car.
Starting point is 01:21:54 The, is it Dana Car? No, David Spade. The David Spade character that is like with, first of all, you know, down on earth, he's like, you know, whisper in the boss's ear guy. But then he gets into the alien realm and he's like the, you know, you know, We really should go and talk over there. You shouldn't do this. Like the kind of the veris, the whisper kind of care.
Starting point is 01:22:17 That's what Judah is like a conniving schemer. Like a conniving schemer to the son of God. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. It's like, dude, you are such a dummy. You really don't. It's really not someone we want to upset Jesus. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:31 And it's like, like even if like we accept your, your statement at face, Schmuel is not the center of power in the Sanhedron anyway. Like he's not the one wielding the power of the Sanhedron. He's the one who just told you that he can't, he can't stop the Sanhedron from coming after Jesus. Right. But remember also, Judas was excited when Shmuel walked in because he said it was a great opportunity for a strategic alliance. Because Jesus needs alliances. Well, because Jesus, because Judas sees the black robe and he sees it as power.
Starting point is 01:23:06 And he's like, oh, he's like, oh, like, yes, like this is power. Like, this is what we've been waiting for because these guys wield secular power here on Earth, unlike us, these guys wield secular power. They can help us get where we need to go because. Yeah, when we, if we make a strategic alliance between us and the Pharisees, then we can take on the Romans. And it's like the Pharisees are literally plotting to kill Jesus right now. Yeah, they're like literally eating dinner right now with the Romans.
Starting point is 01:23:36 talking about killing all of you. And a way better way than we all eat dinner. Yeah. Bredil? Youssef gets it because he's like upset by the fact that Jesus is basically told me he's going to die. And he doesn't care about the things that Chimuel cares about. Yeah, bro. I stink like that.
Starting point is 01:24:19 You. Where are you going? I don't know. You're the one who asked why the nard was insulted and given to the poor. We all care about the poor now. The only one in that room with any sense in your head. It doesn't take much sense. I was just pointing out the facts.
Starting point is 01:24:37 If the parable he said was true, then everyone should have seen how incongruous the waste was. Should have been more disheal. What are you going to do? I'm not like you. I believe he is the one. I spoke up in that room because I care about all of us getting this right. We have an opportunity. This coming Passover to unite over a million of our people against our oppressors.
Starting point is 01:25:06 This is too important to be divided. I agree with you. Our people should be united. I better go. May I speak to you again? Good apologies again for the outbursts to vote. The siege are now being laid of like, you can see. It's like, okay.
Starting point is 01:25:24 So now there's going to be a connection between the Pharisees and Judas. Yeah, remember, in the Bible. The oil, the nard is poured on Jesus. And then the next line is Judas goes to the Pharisees. And he's like, what will you give me if I turn him over to you? So timing works. No, no, no, no, no. Jesus wanted to talk to him.
Starting point is 01:25:49 He's glad you came. Shmuel made his choice. I want you to know. I do not share his indignation. Please. I know. Good luck on the right back to Jerusalem. It seems like it could get awkward.
Starting point is 01:26:05 We'll manage. Elizabeth, Shalom, Shalom, Shalom. Shalom, shalom. Okay, now, pause and a second. This is exactly what I was going to say we should do next, is play this scene, and then we'll play the two scenes with Jesus and Mary and the bridle, and we'll get out of here after that. But this, so this is dinner with the king of the Jews, right? So in the, in the flashback,
Starting point is 01:26:41 we see King David coming home, Hosanna, Hosanna, Palm leaves being laid down, you know, glory and honor being bestowed upon him. Our king has come home, right? And then at the end of that scene, we see that he has the bridle that was, that was taken from the same family line. And this is a, important to the divinity of Jesus and to him being fulfillment of the prophecies that he came from the line of David. So the showrunners are reinforcing that with this bridle that has been, you know, it's come with us through multiple seasons now. And it pays off here in a pretty great way. Yeah. And it's Joseph who is giving, who gave the bridle to Jesus. So it's, yeah, like it kind of brings
Starting point is 01:27:34 everything full circle yeah and i don't think we need to play um joanna and claudia talking to each other after because i think that happens right after this so yeah just cut it cut it at the end of the dinner scene cool watch show some solidarity with me and join the finer things huh and stop pretending you like our food i don't know why you hate being jewish so much i like this You hate it. I like it. You hate it.
Starting point is 01:28:07 I do not, however, enjoy accommodating these unprecedented crowds. I can't believe we made it to this dinner without running someone over. Not that you would have noticed if you did. You do know why there's so many people here this year. A lot of time people can find excuses. Oh, my e-mah is not feeling well. Or my horse is pregnant. It's going to give birth.
Starting point is 01:28:27 I rolled my ankle. The pain is excruciating. The journey's too long. I'm not coming this year. But this year. this year this year what you're telling me you really don't know
Starting point is 01:28:42 I want to hear you say it well apparently there's some kind of medical worker go on go on say his name Jesus of Nazareth 80s and sticks Claudia he was almost there Nazareth
Starting point is 01:29:01 no one important or significant has ever come from there The very fact that Claudia and I know his name suggests otherwise I know an inherently important I admit, I am somewhat curious about the perception of this half of him. Yeah. I would imagine so.
Starting point is 01:29:19 Seeing as how the words, New King have even reached my house. What words? You heard King specifically? I'm sure it was just a joke. So what about the issue of the man from Bethany? The one they say was raised from me. I received assurance from the high priest
Starting point is 01:29:42 the claims of being investigated. We should watch the scene between him and Atticus at the beginning after this because that's a great scene. And pilot is, I really enjoy the pilot character in this telling. I think that he's
Starting point is 01:29:58 I think he's well portrayed. I like that they present him as like a child almost. And he has kind of this really whimsical nature about him. And he's just sitting here just poking hair. And he's like, He's like, hey, hey, this guy, this guy is amassing more respect than you have. What are you going to do about it?
Starting point is 01:30:17 According to Caius, who's not given to overstatement, if the raising of Lazarus is confirmed, the masses of people will rise behind them, and you'll be looking at an insurrection on the scale of the Maccabee. Like January 6th. Yep. Didn't you just say that he was just a curiosity to you? And before that, no one of import.
Starting point is 01:30:47 Now you're referencing the Maccabees. See, how triggered is. Is this what? It's no doubts. Oh, it was us. It was the religious leaders that said it. If Lazarus is all that this comes down to, then you are all woefully unskilled in the art of cunning. Pure Ile. Your move would be. Well, if you want to de-legitimize Jesus by proving that Lazarus is still dead, then make sure Lazarus is still dead.
Starting point is 01:31:38 He means kill us. I know, D. Yeah, lady. I'll pass your idea alone. Hold on. If Jesus did indeed raise Lazarus and Caiaphas has Lazarus killed, why wouldn't Jesus just resurrect him again? Well, now that would really be something, wouldn't it?
Starting point is 01:32:18 I feel like this is how like the next Gart VIP dinner needs to be. I know, I know. We really should like put, we should put the mattresses out and have the table set up and yeah I feel like that's that needs to happen okay so I wanted like the reason that that the reason that the scene played out the way it did is because we already know that Pontchus pilot believes that lazarus was resurrected and the reason he believes that is because Atticus believes that and we understand this mentor mentee relationship that exists between Atticus and pilot where they earnestly seem to like to one another and look out from one another. And so he's like, wait,
Starting point is 01:33:03 did this actually happen? And Alex is like, yeah, I think it actually did. Yeah. And we also know that Pilate's wife is having dreams. Yes. Because that's in the Bible. She tells me. Yeah. Sorry. If I understood any of this, it would be remarkable. Wouldn't it? Jews, from every corner of the known world. I could do without the endless slaughtering of lambs, shrieking, the black. You've read the story, what's to understand? I guess care is what I meant if I cared. It would be remarkable.
Starting point is 01:33:46 Tell yourself whatever you like, Bunches. But I bet if I look in your library, I'll find a piece of flatbread. Stop it. You know I've eaten it all. Why has Tiberius not sent more troops? He knows the scope of this pilgrimage. The population doubles and doubles again. It's more than just the numbers. It's the fervor.
Starting point is 01:34:15 Maybe Caesar's testing you. To see if you can have one week without incident? Test I intend to pass with your help. Oh, Adjikis! Have you heard about the ghost? What ghost everyone is talking about? is talking about the ghost of death in you. That ghost.
Starting point is 01:34:37 Hmm. It's true then. So what if it was? Raising of the dead, corpse one minute, fully restored the next. That superstitious madness was new end. So you don't believe it? Of course not.
Starting point is 01:35:06 Right? Mm. I have seen some things that I can't I can't explain. I haven't decided if it matters or not. Well, Jews have rallied around lesser phenomena before with lethal consequences. Now you're thinking clearly, governor. For them, it doesn't matter if it's true.
Starting point is 01:35:42 It only matters if they think it is. Why is that true? See, what concerns me is that it concerns Caiaphas. I don't know if he believes it or not, but... I can tell he's spooked. he's spooked. Caiaphas. He probably doesn't believe it.
Starting point is 01:36:02 But he is spooked that the people do. It's all right. They'll be fine. You just need to know whether the arrival of a Jewish sorcerer is a good thing or very bad for them. Yes? So Atticus's counsel there is really interesting. I mean, number one, you can tell that he's like, yeah, this is true. And you'll recall that in the last episode, Jesus said it wasn't about the who.
Starting point is 01:36:46 It was about the win. When he was like Lazar said, like, why me? Like, why did you bring me back to life? And Jesus said, well, it wasn't really about the who. It was really just about the win. The timing of it, like this was the time for me to perform my final miracle. This was the final miracle. And you just happened to be the dead one at the time.
Starting point is 01:37:04 But I'm glad it was you. But really, when you step back and you kind of zoom out, The reason that people like Atticus can confirm that this happened is because of how important Lazarus was. This would be like Donald Trump, the real estate developer, not Donald Trump, the president, but Donald Trump, the real estate developer dying and then being brought back to life, right? Yeah. Everyone would have known that Lazarus was dead. You saw all the important people who were attending, who were sitting Shiva at the team. Who are witnesses.
Starting point is 01:37:34 Who are witnesses. Yep. And those were all like. Not a bunch of randos and lepers. and you know, but Yusuf's father who Yusuf got his position in Sanhedron because of who his father was. Yes. Yes. According to the storytelling.
Starting point is 01:37:48 So this isn't the same thing as him going to some random pool in like and giving some lame, lame guy Jesse his legs back. Like this is not the same. This is you're bringing somebody who is of cultural, who is of significance to credible sources. Yeah. To the community with credible sources who are saying this happened. And then that's also what makes Pilots' wife's suggestion that much more like crazy. She's like, well, why don't we just kill him again? Or I'm sorry, Pilate's suggestion where he says, well, why don't we just kill him again?
Starting point is 01:38:21 And it's like, well, you're talking about killing someone who's actually pretty important. And people already know that this guy's alive. So killing him again is actually just probably going to make things worse. And then Pilots' wife is like, well, what if you kill him? And then Jesus brings him back to life again. Yeah. And Pilate is like laughing because he's like, I think he really did bring him back to life. So there's like these layers of, I don't know, commentaries that are happening that I find very well, well done.
Starting point is 01:38:50 Yeah. Matthew 2719 is where it is confirmed that Pilate's wife was having dreams about Jesus. And she, you know, before he rules on the matter, tells her not to have anything to do with that. English standard version says righteous. NIV says innocent man. Okay, so there's a scene where there, Mary walks up with the backpack. Jesus has left the backpack.
Starting point is 01:39:21 It's pretty short. And I think that play that scene. And then after they get the donkey, I don't think we need to show them getting the donkey. We can just talk about it. We should show, I think we should show with him. getting the donkey only because the interaction between a Z and the donkey man.
Starting point is 01:39:41 I think that there's something that's happening there that is worth mentioning. Well, that is a direct hit on the Bible. Okay, yeah. So let's do that. The backpack scene. I'm trying to remember. It's really short, but Mary walks up and tells Jesus that actually we can skip that because the bridal comes up again at the very end.
Starting point is 01:40:00 But I'll just say what happened. So Mary, his mother, Mary walks up, sorry, there's three Mary's. Sorry, his mother Mary walks up with Jesus' backpack. She says, you forgot your backpack. He says, I know I wanted you to bring it to me because I wanted you to be kind of the representation of Joseph. So all three of us could be together as it's this now is my moment. It's my time has come. We actually need the bridle now.
Starting point is 01:40:26 You know, leading humanity out of their captivity to sin is what's, tat in it on Passover no less. Yeah, yeah. So here's the scene. And then, and then, of course, we get, and that's when Jesus tells Z and Matthew to go get a donkey. Matthew is like incredulous that Jesus is instructing them to go steal something. He can't quite.
Starting point is 01:40:57 His autism won't get. You want to borrow a burrow? Yeah, he can't quite get past that. Z, of course, has no problem with it because he's a train of. assassins. He's like, he's more flexibility as well established. And then we have... He's your favorite character. Yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 01:41:13 And then, and then Atticus, of course, comes out of the bushes because he's just the, like, omniscient, all-seeing secular figure. He's kind of... He's always there. He's always there. He, like, sees everything. And then we're going to see him like track the donkey man. So then let's fast forward
Starting point is 01:41:29 to the donkey man. That would be... I think, I think that was actually, I think the scene between Mary and Jesus was after he sent, yeah, it was yeah, it was after he sent them, but, but not after they got it. Oh, and by the way, I think it was brilliant that it was Matthew and Z, the showrunners picked for this because Z being like a trained assassin has no problem like taking orders. Like Jesus tells him to do something. He's like, yes, sir, I want to do it.
Starting point is 01:42:05 And Matthew's like the one who's sitting there like, struggle. with the like wait you want us to go steal something because he's you know autistic um so i i thought that was a great pairing like z's like oh yeah like steal a donkey no problem got this yeah and there's a there's a subtext that you know these are all jews and so everybody pretty much knows the scriptures and the prophecies about messiah this is uh zachariah nine versus nine and 10 rejoice greatly oh daughter of zion shout aloud oh daughter of jerusalem behold your king is coming to you righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a cult, the foal of a donkey. Oh, was there more?
Starting point is 01:42:49 Well, the next verse, I mean, you can see kind of how they get confused, because the next verse is, I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the warhorse from Jerusalem and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations, his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth. So you can understand why they were thinking that they were going to be liberated. Hmm. This must be it. Casually stealing a donkey. Just casually.
Starting point is 01:43:55 Who are you? You're taking my master's coat? The Lord has need of it. Our master. Now, hold on. I don't know what kind of arrangements you've made, but you cannot take it. Has anyone ever sat on this colp? What?
Starting point is 01:44:12 Please, just answer. No, no one, but what is this all about? The Lord has need of this. Are you followers of the Nazarene that raised Lazarus? Do you know the prophets, especially those after the exile? From Zechariah, rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion, shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem, your king is coming to you. And having salvation is he.
Starting point is 01:45:03 humble and mounted on a donkey on a cult the foal of a donkey what are you waiting for so the significance i think of this moment like the reason i want to play it is like that interaction between them again there's atticus like of course and they're watching and then he's gonna he's gonna take a centurion's horse he's going to follow this guy and see what's what's going on um but the significance of that moment is i really think that like we were witnessing the first Christians right there because this is now we're pivoting away from Jewish from Jewish scripture and pivoting to something new like Jesus just told you about he's the fulfillment of the old testament right and now I'm going to give you a new commandment and now I there's a new
Starting point is 01:46:04 a new ministry that that is starting this guy does not know who these two are he doesn't know anything about them he does know about Lazarus he has heard about Lazarus and he immediately recognized when he says the Lord is in need of this. This guy clearly is a follower of Jesus, even though he never met Jesus. And so that understanding in that moment where he says, what are you waiting for? Yeah, like get out of here. Go. It reminded me of what we saw at the beginning of the last episode where Matthew arrives at
Starting point is 01:46:38 the cave and the young woman comes out and is like ardently defending Mary. Like this is the beginning of that, right? And that relationship and that that dynamic is critical because without that Christianity doesn't happen. And that is, it's really hard to appreciate that today because Christianity is so ubiquitous in Western civilization. But in the early days of Christianity, it was so deeply persecuted. And it was so they were all hunted like animals that if you didn't have that ardent, the fervor as Atticus is. describe it. There's no way it survives, which is why Jesus needs all the disciples to be hardcore by the time he is killed, which is why he needs them to stop goofing around and
Starting point is 01:47:29 listen more. Yeah, it's an excellent point. I want to make, well, it's a correction, I guess. The story of Jesus being anointed is told in Matthew, Luke, and John. Matthew is the version that we read, which is Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon and the leper. Simon the leopard, a woman came up to him with a flask of ointment. She poured it on his head as he reclined. They were all mad, saying why the waste, etc. Luke has very similar story. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner when she learned that Jesus sat at a meal at a Pharisee's house,
Starting point is 01:48:14 brought an alabaster box of ointment, and stood at his. his feet behind him weeping began to wash his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. And John, it says, six days before the Passover, therefore came to Beth, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. John served and Lazarus was at one of those reclining at the table with him. Mary, therefore, took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard and anointed the feet
Starting point is 01:48:44 of Jesus and wiped his feet with. her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Ascariat, one of his disciples who was about to betray him, said, why was this ointment not sold for 300 dinari and given to the poor? He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. And having charge of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. Jesus said, leave her alone so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. For the poor, you have always, you always have with you, but you do not always have me. Wow. So it actually says he said this because not because he cared about poor because he was a thief.
Starting point is 01:49:23 Yeah. Wow. Fascinating, right? Yeah, man. Okay. Good. Good stuff. Okay. So now let's go to them putting the bridle on the donkey and that that'll take us home. Yep. And this, the donkey story is told in Matthew 21 versus 1 through 7. Do you want to read that first? Well, yeah, it's not totally long. Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Beth Phage, looks like Phage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples saying to them,
Starting point is 01:50:06 go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will fight a donkey tied and a colt with her. Untied them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say the Lord needs them and he will send them at once. this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet saying, say to the daughter of Zion, behold your king is coming to you, humble and mounted on a donkey,
Starting point is 01:50:27 on a colt the full of a beast of burden, which we just read that passage from Zechariah. The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks and he sat on them. Good stuff. Time has come. I must do the will of my father in heaven.
Starting point is 01:51:43 I know you all have many questions. And there will be a time for those. But for now, will you come with me? Where else will we go? You alone have the words of eternal life. John 6, verse 68. No matter what happens this week, no matter what you see or feel or think or do, I want you to know that in this world, I love you as my own.
Starting point is 01:53:06 I will love you till the end. That's a take on John 13 verse 1. I do like how they keep Sean Thomas. You gotta think he's like, they'd be worried about his mental health. Yeah. Okay, so that's where it ends. Which is great. Like, that's a great way to end the season.
Starting point is 01:55:04 It's going to be, you know, Palm Sunday stuff when we launch into season five. couple things that happened in this episode that we didn't really talk about. One is, I think we see the last of Gaius. Because they don't return to Copernum as far as I know. Oh, yeah. You could be right. So he had kind of a... I'm struggling to remember...
Starting point is 01:55:35 Yeah, I'm struggling to remember what happens. Everything happens in season five, but... Oh, well, don't spoil it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You could be right about that. But I mean, but we could see. We could see. Yeah, maybe he goes to Jerusalem or something.
Starting point is 01:55:49 Yeah. But yeah, so we see the goodbye to Gaius. Eden and Salome come back or come to Bethany where and rejoin Jesus and the disciples. So they're together for, you know, heading in for Passover. There was one other thing. we had skipped. Hold on a second. We talked about
Starting point is 01:56:20 Veronica and Jesse. That might be the only the only one we skipped. I thought there was one more. We talked about the purchase of the oil. We talked about obviously the Pharisees. It's a really packed episode
Starting point is 01:56:36 and really well done to close out the season. And I think we actually did hit pretty much all. of it. Yep. That's good. So next week, this was a recorded show, and next week will also be a recorded show. And it'll be our season eight recap, or see, I keep saying eight, season four recap.
Starting point is 01:56:57 There aren't eight seasons. There's only five. So far. So we will do a recap. And then going forward into season five, this show will probably be a recorded show going forward, which is good, you know, it's great because we're not going to be trapped in a time slot, you know, like in a recording time slot each week. But so just, you know, as we'll probably talk more about that next week, but, you know, on our on our recap show. But season four, really good
Starting point is 01:57:33 stuff. Yes. And we end with Jesus riding off to his doom, which he's now, Not his doom. It was glory. We end on Jesus fulfilling the prophecy in Zechariah 9. Yes. But in the mind, like you see it on the face of everyone. Like in the minds of the followers, I won't just say the disciples because it's much more than the disciples in that scene. They all now finally understand.
Starting point is 01:58:02 They finally begin to understand. And you're going to see that actually in the first episode of the fifth season. And the way the fifth season is directed, the way that it is shown, it's the director messes with the temporal sequence. And I'll just leave it at that. So the time, the way the time is shown. And we'll talk about that episode one of season five. But all of that is going to be revisited. Because isn't all of season five is these six days?
Starting point is 01:58:38 right I mean with the exception of flashbacks it's the six days leading up to well I'll just say it the all of season five is it's the last supper so every so the beginning of every episode is a portion of the last supper so in order to so in order to watch the entire last supper you have to watch like the first few minutes of every of every episode yeah so it's like so it's like the last Cut that together. Yeah, yeah. Well, I think they might. Somebody probably did.
Starting point is 01:59:10 They might have. I think they did actually cut it together in one of the latter episodes. I can't quite remember. But pretty much it's like it cuts between the last supper and then these six days. Yeah. Yeah, I remember the format. I did. I did not.
Starting point is 01:59:24 Like, so remember I had said, I think I stopped watching the middle of season four. I think it was just that episode that I was either maybe I accidentally skipped it or I didn't, or I was multitasked. or something on my first original watch of this show and didn't because I I saw all this before all of season four. I don't think and I remember talking to Jessica Storm when season five was live. Like it was happening and saying like I'm just not ready to watch the crucifixion. I can't do season five right now. And she's like, oh, no, no.
Starting point is 01:59:58 The crucifixion doesn't happen in season five. But I'm not for. It doesn't happen in season five. Yeah, I'm not, spoiler alert. I'm not sure. It does happen eventually about guys. Nothing can stop. Eventually he does stop me, yes.
Starting point is 02:00:13 Yeah, spoiler alert. But then he rises again. Spoiler alert. But, but, but, so I don't, I don't actually know. I don't remember any of it. I remember seeing the hubbub about the last supper. And I remember the, the, the clippy bit at the beginning thing that you're talking about. So I don't.
Starting point is 02:00:34 I don't know if I've actually watched season five or not, but we'll find out together. It's, in my opinion, it's brilliantly done because the last supper is obviously significant, but there's also things that happen at the last supper that are significant. Some of those things we've just discussed in the past two hours, as it relates to Judas, obviously. Judas being a dirty, rotten, thieving scoundrel. Yes, exactly. And so, like, the reveal of that and other things. And, you know, I like right there, we'll get into this with a recap show next week.
Starting point is 02:01:06 But like Thomas is being propped up by the, is it the brothers of thunder? How about that? The sons of thunder. The sons of thunder. How have I forgotten that? Yeah, yeah. But like. Being held up by him.
Starting point is 02:01:21 Yeah. He's starting to realize and you're going to see it in this next episode. He's starting to realize like what is happening with Jesus. And obviously that's going to probably, I would have. imagine change his perception about what happened to Rima a little bit, a little bit. But also he's just with Lazarus too, right? So like he's aware that, you know, but he does seem, he does seem a little. He seems like he's in the middle of a mental break.
Starting point is 02:01:51 Totally. Totally on the brink of a mental break. And it'll be, it'll be really interesting to see because I do think because the show is called The Chosen, I do think that they're going to explore what happens. to these guys after the crucifixion. And you're going to hear... I think Dallas-Magan said that, that they're going to do acts. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:02:09 Well, and you're going to hear Jesus explain this at the very, like, toward the beginning of this next episode. He's going to explaining them, here's what's going to happen after, like, here's what's going to happen to all of you. And it'll be really interesting to see how they explore that. And that's where I say, I speculate that maybe we'll see guys again, because you never know. like they're going to they're all going to scatter so um so yeah so we'll see but you know that's a
Starting point is 02:02:36 conversation we'll explore in two weeks um but next one and uh yeah one more thing on judas that i think is is just kind of hilarious um and this is just in the biblical telling the anointing and maybe there were different women or something but told in matthew everybody was upset about the money told in Luke. Judas was upset about the money, but he's just referred to as Judas Ascariat. And you get to John and John is like, well, Judas, who was a thieving scoundrel. Oh, so one of them said that all of them were upset about the oil? The one in Matthew, the one that we read said that the, I think it was the Matthew one, said that the, that the disciples were upset because how expensive it was.
Starting point is 02:03:27 see when the when the disciples saw it they were indignant saying why this waste for this could have been sold for a large sum and given it to the poor and that's uh matthew 26 but then john just called up at thieving scoundrel's jesus he did it again because the compares again but judas is scary it one of his disciples oh wait this is a different version what version is this this is not the way i just read it uh who was about to destroy him said why was this ointment not sold? Yeah, yeah, it is him. So, but Judas Iskariat, one of his disciples, who was about to betray him, said, why was this ointment not sold for 300 dinari and given to the poor? He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief and having charged
Starting point is 02:04:12 of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. He's also the woman that was like, me and my brother were running, and I got there first. I love that. John's fun. John is fun. That's a great way to write it. It's like, yeah, these politicians aren't indignant because they care about us. It's because they're all a bunch of thieves and they want to steal our money.
Starting point is 02:04:41 I love it. It's brilliant. All right. Well, it's 10 o'clock at night and we both need to write our Badlands brief takes. So we should get out of here. But please have the like button. Everybody helps us out quite a bit. also drop into the chat and leave a comment.
