Badlands Media - The Choice S5E8: The Upper Room Part 2

Episode Date: September 25, 2026

Ashe in America and Ghost close out Season 5 of The Chosen with the season finale, episode eight, and it is a big one, covering the Upper Room, the Last Supper, and the walk into Gethsemane. The hosts... spend a lot of time on Thaddeus, an apostle they admit they never gave much thought to before, tracing his quiet, almost overlooked calling and why the show frames him as an example of faith without needing a dramatic reason to believe. They also break down the emotional weight of Jesus's final teachings to the disciples before everything changes, and a haunting vision involving Abraham and Isaac that lands as one of the most powerful moments of the episode. Expect plenty of scripture references, some fun tangents about their morning cacao routine, and honest reflection on how much ground this season managed to cover. It is a heavy, satisfying finale, and the hosts tease what is coming in Season 6 before signing off for their season recap next week.

Starting point is 00:00:00 The Badlands, what are the Badlands? Explain those Badlands. That's a hell of a name. Oh, weird. Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the choice. Today, it's the season finale. Season 5, episode 8, the last chosen episode to be aired publicly.
Starting point is 00:00:24 And the new season, of course, coming out November 15th, the week after Gart starts, or after Gart 14, which we'll talk about here in a little bit. And so this is the last one, Ghosts. Yeah. Yeah. So it's hard of believe it kind of flew by. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Yeah. I mean, I feel like we did it in less than a year, didn't we? Yeah. Well, there's not, I mean, there, when did we start? Oh, we can look that up. It's like October, I was a something like that. Yeah. So that would be that would.
Starting point is 00:01:01 So it's what? eight episodes five seasons what is that 40 yeah yeah it's about yeah right and then you know we had a couple we had like season recaps
Starting point is 00:01:14 we did the we just spent a couple weeks we did the Christmas specials that's right yeah yeah and then we probably took a week off here and there for guards itself so probably yeah like that's why oh no we did last week
Starting point is 00:01:27 we recorded it but I think the Gart before that we probably took the week off yeah 53 videos total. So, yeah, it's, we've done the, we've done the series in less than a year. We've been doing the show for, we're into, this is our second week and our second year. All right. Well, there you go.
Starting point is 00:01:46 So it's just as real as all the other metrics that are out there. Yep. So we are, we are going to get into it. This is the final episode of the chosen, but it's not the final episode of the choice before we go on high. iatis before the next season we will have an episode next week it'll be our season eight recap and we'll kind of recap the series um up to this point uh you know i think that's i think that's a good thing to do given where we are in the story um and i think that season six of this show is going to be really hard yeah yeah and based on what they did with this uh based on what they did with
Starting point is 00:02:30 this like the latter half of this episode i wonder if they're going to do that more and i mean i imagine they are like like the way that they handled this uh the last supper like they chop the last supper up into um you know whatever seven parts yeah like i feel like they might do that with the crucifixion but then also blend in like they did it easier yeah we'll blend in like they did We'll blend in like they did with this one where like Jesus is having these like out of body experiences like the visions where he's like visiting with the prophets and like he's going through like he's traveling through like space space and time. Which kind of makes me think about Mel Gibson's movie he has come out. I mean that sounds like that's going to be crazy. Yeah, which we should probably do a special on.
Starting point is 00:03:25 Oh yeah. We'll definitely do a story out or on. But yeah, I mean, that's going to be crazy because, of course, Mel Gibson's first movie. Check us if you're on the right mic. I'm not. I bet I'm not. It sounds super echoey. It took you this whole, we just had like an hour.
Starting point is 00:03:45 I know, I know. Ghost and I were going to live and you now we're telling me. Oh my gosh. It's so much different. Yeah. We just literally talked for an hour before starting this recording this recording. and it didn't occur to me until right now. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:01 Well, yes. But his first movie, The Passion of the Christ, is really what made, I think, this show possible. Like, it was the, it was the proof of concept. Not that, not that the Bible has never been put on film before. Of course it has. But the style of it and the, there's a lot of, I see a lot of, there's a lot of, like, correlation that I feel like between the passion of the Christ and and this show. Well, yeah, and certainly in the next season.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Yeah, obviously the next season is the is going to be like the Passion of Christ. The thing about this show, which we have, I think, done an effective job of breaking down episode over episode is how much of it is show writer invention, right? Before the show started, we were talking about the story with Thadius. One of my favorite parts of this episode. And I think the other favorite part, there's a lot, there's a lot packed into this episode. But when Jesus is in Gassimini and he sees Abraham and Isaac. Yep. And, you know, like that, we'll get into that.
Starting point is 00:05:14 But the moment with daddy is like, what would it be like to be the first person called? And he like sits you down and explains, well, we're building a kingdom. but it's not really a kingdom that you think of. And you know, you've all been waiting for us to overthrow Rome. He didn't get this far. But like that, you know, that pitch, what did that look like? Total showrunner invention. All of that.
Starting point is 00:05:37 But I loved it. And I think that's okay about this show. Like the show, the chosen is not a replacement for reading your Bible. It's not a replacement for your relationship with God. It will hopefully draw you into a deeper relationship with God. and, you know, the process of the process and practice of reading your Bible, because that's how, you know, in a lot of ways, how you get to know God. Other ways, too, the helper, which really interesting to see, or interested in seeing how the show deal, we've talked about this before, but how the show deals with Pentecost and what that looks like. But I don't, I don't even know if we'll get there in season six.
Starting point is 00:06:13 It might be a season seven thing. Who knows? But the, the, the, I think it's beautifully done. But when we talk next week, which will be the kind of longer. It's like season, I think we've done this with every season, or at least the past few. It's like season finale, part one and part two, right?
Starting point is 00:06:31 Like this is part one. We're going to go through as much of the episode as we can in a shorter period of time because, again, we talked for an hour before we started recording, and we both have to write the brief after we're done recording. But next week, we're going to, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:46 do the season recap and kind of tee up the next season. And we'll be able to get, into more of that, you know, kind of comparing what's, you know, what's, what's, what's, what's, what's, what's, what's, what's, what's, what's, what's, what is showrunner invention. A lot of it is showrunner invention. I think there's, um, you know, probably more invention, backstories and characters in this story than any other show or any other TV production of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ that I've ever seen. You know, they took a lot of liberties. I don't
Starting point is 00:07:19 necessarily have a problem with it. I have some problems as, as, you know, I have some problems, as I have. that we've talked about where they've changed, you know, changed things or invented context. The one that I always go to is John the Baptist witnessing the miracles. You know, that was that there are things like that. But show overall is beautiful. And season eight in particular was an acceleration, right? Like this, we talk about acceleration all the time. And this was really an acceleration to get to the point where Jesus is betrayed into the hands of sinners with a kiss.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Yeah, and so I think, well, so I think the success of the showrunner invention is that they don't attempt to create new lore. It's like they're basically just like embellishing the like what's already there. It's like they're just kind of like trying to, they're trying to just add like meat to the bone as opposed to trying to add more bones, right? I think that's what makes it work. They're not trying to create like new side stories and new. like, you know, like chapters of the Bible. They're just kind of trying to infill what's already there. And then they're also, and this is a lot of this is just, I think, for the sake of efficiencies
Starting point is 00:08:31 and, you know, having everything be a little more of, I think it's very clever. The way that they kind of tie different things together, it's like, oh, you know, three different stories become the same person, right? The same little side character is actually multiple stories, right? like Barabbas being the assassin. Yeah, the zealot that was sent to kill, kill Z. With Thaddeus, what I found really interesting about the Thaddeus calling is, number one, he's kind of a, he's, I would argue he's like the most overlooked character throughout the whole series. I feel like he's the character that is, the show is great.
Starting point is 00:09:13 Like you said, it should bring people closer to God because I think it gives the, apostles personalities. It doesn't necessarily, I mean, we shouldn't necessarily be like, oh, this is definitely what this apostle was like. But I think it helps people remember the apostles and distinguish between them, even if the personalities aren't an accurate reflection of who the people were. It helps people remember the different apostles. And the more you can draw those connections, the easier it is, I think, to organize information
Starting point is 00:09:46 in your head. I mean, I'm just like going to, you know, the way that I research, the way that I present, like, when I'm on screen, the way that I'm trying to, like, do all this memory recall, having those kind of like little connections and, like, in personality traits and stuff to recall makes it so much easier to remember things and like, and connect the dots in your head, like in real time. So I think it actually makes it easier to absorb the material and understand. the Bible as you're reading the Bible if you have, you know, the ability to distinguish between the apostles in your head because the show's given all of them personalities. Now, with Thaddeus, again, I think he's kind of the most overlooked character in the whole series. He's given, I want to say he's given the least amount of screen time. I don't know if that's factual or not, but I feel like he's given the least amount of screen time. He's definitely given the least amount of
Starting point is 00:10:44 like content like like they don't really flush anything else like like we meet little st james in thaddeus he's they're already with jesus same yeah sounds like an island yeah um yeah um we so we meet we meet little james and thaddeus but little james gets a lot of of of runway right i mean there's a lot of uh like the whole thing with his let with his leg being lame and like he's a singer and I mean there's a lot of development to his character throughout the series whereas Thaddeus you don't get that but what I really like about this moment is
Starting point is 00:11:24 his calling I think required the greatest leap of faith because every other person it seems except for maybe little James every other person there was like this miraculous moment right of like whoa like that just happened like this guy is special the Jesus is special like yes I'm going to now do what you're asking to do um like filling the filling the net with fish right um getting jesse to walk i mean there are all these moments where here is the reason the apostle suddenly like locked in and was ready to go that didn't happen with that is like like you said he like they were just sitting there eating lunch
Starting point is 00:12:02 on a construction site just dudes being dudes being dudes and jesus is like hey i'm going to do this and Thadis is like, what are you talking about, dude? You're a, you're a poor homeless guy, like living in the woods. Like, what do you mean you're going to go create a kingdom? And he's like, just come with me and do it. Like, we're going to change the world. And Thadius had to just go completely unfaith in doing it. And there is no miracle.
Starting point is 00:12:28 There's no, like, sign. There's no, there's none of that. He just has to go. And what's really, really brilliant and really clever about how the showrunners do this is they make him a stone mason. So he's the foundation of the entire following. So he's the first stone. And even like the first scene of him and the flashback is him chipping the stone and then laying the stone in the wall.
Starting point is 00:12:52 It's like that's what he is. And then he literally is laying the stone in the wall in that first scene. And then he is the stone being laid by Jesus first. He's the first stone to go down and then everyone else, even though Peter is like, you know, thought of is like, on this rock. The rock. In the show, Thaddeus is the stone mason and Thaddeus is actually the foundation of it all. And he does it completely on faith, not because Jesus, like, performed a sign and wonder in front of him.
Starting point is 00:13:22 Yeah, agreed. And so I looked up while you were talking, which apostle gets the least amount of reference in scripture. And James son of Alpheus, little James, and Simon the zealot, each appears by name only in the four lists of the apostles. Thaddeus, who is also Judas son of James, and everywhere he's mentioned, it says, Judas, not Ascariat. Judas, not Ascariot in all these references.
Starting point is 00:13:53 He has one speaking line. So he's like next. He's the least amount of, that have speaking lines. He's the least among those who have speaking lines. And it is in John. chapter my end 14 John 14 verse 22 then Judas not Ascariat
Starting point is 00:14:16 said but Lord why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world and this was when he was it's the upper room where he's talking about the helper coming that one where Nathaniel is like another person you know that moment
Starting point is 00:14:36 that's his one speaking line Thaddeus in the Bible. So it is, you know, he is, you know, less of, I, I think I've ever really thought about Thaddeus before this. And I was looking before to see, I have not yet found my book of martyrs because I want to be able to look up their murdered. I wonder if it's over there. It's around here somewhere. But, yeah. Okay. Well, before we get into the, so we just basically did that segment on that clip. But we also should, we should talk. about our awesome sponsors of this show. And as, you know, we all love chocolate. And we talk about it all the time because we drink it every morning. That's right. We drink chocolate every morning.
Starting point is 00:15:23 This episode is brought to you by Cacao Bliss from Earth Echo, a ceremonial grade cacao drink with seven superfoods to curb cravings and protect your heart and arteries. There's a Caribbean island where a stunning percentage of people live to 100 years old. Researchers spent years trying to figure out why and the answer surprised everyone. And today's sponsor figured out how to blend that secret into a delicious daily ritual. A native tribe in Panama called the Kuna people drink five cups of a type of chocolate a day. Harvard researchers discovered their rates of cardiovascular problems are nine times lower than Americans. Cancer rates are 15 times lower. And their energy, weight, and mental clarity is remarkably well preserved well into old age.
Starting point is 00:16:07 The reason comes down to something called flavanols, natural compounds found in raw cacao that modern chocolate processing destroys. In fact, research shows that drinking high flavanol cacao can increase stem cell counts by up to 220 percent and improves blood vessel function by up to 47 percent. But you have to get the raw, natural, ceremonial grade stuff like you get in cacao bliss to learn more, excuse me, to learn more and get your special discounts, drink and free shipping today at, sorry, that's written weird, learn more and get your special discounts and free shipping today at drinkch chocolate.com
Starting point is 00:16:46 slash badlands, drinkchocket.com slash badlands. You won't regret it. We love it. It's delicious. I have to say, yeah, I have to say that like the, like, I feel like everyone's feed. back like John and Zach and everyone because they tried it before I did and then they tried it and then when I tried it I was like okay yeah I see what you're saying they're like yeah it takes a little getting used to it first because
Starting point is 00:17:12 it's a very it's a different kind of flavor and I feel like everyone is in agreement now like you put it in your coffee I've like become I don't want to say I become addicted to it because it's not an addictive substance but but like once I started going back to like you know I started working full time
Starting point is 00:17:30 in an office again and I was drinking coffee at the office without the cacao. It's like, I don't like, I don't like the taste of coffee now without the cacao. To the point where I started bringing, bringing the blue jar to work with me. And, and, and, and dumping the cacao on my desk and just, and like, and just snorting it. Yeah, pretty much, pretty much.
Starting point is 00:17:56 Yeah, yeah, yeah. But then, but then it's like I didn't have the cacao at home. So then I had to start transporting the blue jar. You're carrying a jar. I'm just like carrying a jar like around with me. And it's, yeah, it's a little weird. But it's worth it because when I don't have the cacao in the coffee, it's, it's basically what I'm saying. The clarity is impacted.
Starting point is 00:18:17 The length of your kind of uptime from the caffeine is impacted. It just also doesn't taste is good. It like I'm used. I'm now like used to the taste of the chocolate coffee. And like now when it's not in my coffee, I'm like my coffee. missing something. So what I'm saying is I need to get another package with the blue jar so I can have a blue jar for home and a blue jar.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Oh, you, I see what you're saying. Yeah, yeah. You need a second. I need a home and work. Yeah, but, but yeah, but you could if you brought, if you brought the cacao jar to work, you could get everybody else in your office hooked on it as well and tell them to go to drink chocolate.com slash badlands and get their own cacao jars for home. and you got the one at work and, you know, keeping it full for the homies.
Starting point is 00:19:06 And they've all got them at home. And then everybody's on cacao. And then everybody in your office lives to be 100. Dude, I need to do that. I need to get, I'm going to order more cacao and I'm going to bring it. Because they can't have my cacao, but I will order him their own cacao. And then they can, I'll let them have that. But, yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:25 Drinkchoclet.com slash badlands. We are also sponsored this evening by gold. Appropriate. Not 30 pieces of silver, more than that, gold and silver. After an incredible run earlier this year, both medals pulled back, but recently they've started climbing again. Gold is once again pushing above the 4,000 mark while silver has rallied sharply as investors return to precious metals amid global uncertainty. Analysts point to continued central bank buying strong physical demand.
Starting point is 00:19:59 and growing industrial demand for silver as reasons the long-term outlook remain strong. Every day, more Americans are looking to diversify with assets that have stood the test of time. That's why now may be a smart time to take a closer look at Goldco. That's badlandsgold.com. And yeah, it's definitely time to invest in actual assets because fiat is going down. I think. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:01 There's some, like the structure. Yeah, there's some, there's some bad stuff happening in the bond market right now. So we don't get into all that, but it's,
Starting point is 00:21:09 uh, it's, it's, it's not good. So. Yeah. All right. Well,
Starting point is 00:21:13 let's jump in. We'll do our, our next, uh, couple of ads later in the show, but let's jump in and play the Thadias meets Jesus scene. All right. Joab.
Starting point is 00:23:12 What do you do? Where's, Joab? Shalom. What happened to Joab? Oh, I'm not sure. Other than that, the foreman told me he wouldn't be here today. So I should handle the ramp. I hope he's all right.
Starting point is 00:23:30 Yeah, me too. No, would have surprised me if you were him. Joab can't carry a tune. That's not really my specialty either. No, I'm saying he really can't. To the point he has to mouth along to the songs in synagogue so he doesn't ruin it for everyone else. Sounds like a very considerate carpenter.
Starting point is 00:23:49 I'm Jesus, by the way. Thaddeus, Stone Mason. Oh, that's what you were doing over there, with the rock cutting and the stacking and the mortar. I had no idea. You know, it's beautiful work that you're doing there. Ah. You can kind of see where Joab's work ends and yours begins. You'll see the planks are lined up straight.
Starting point is 00:24:13 You're kind, but tell me, did this Joab eat your lunch too? You can't sing. He lays crooked cedar planks. He sounds quite terrible. No, no, he's fine. Speaking of lunch, it's about that time. You're going to take a break? I suppose it is. May I join you?
Starting point is 00:24:36 You live here in Beth Saida? Oh, no. I'm from Copernium. So I'm working on this job. I've just been camping. Oh, me too. You're from Copernium. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:24:49 The camping part. I was born in Bethlehem and Judeo. I lived in Egypt for a while. I spent most of my life in Nazareth. I'll hold for the job. No, no, no, no. I don't like to make fun of where people are from. Really?
Starting point is 00:25:08 Plus, who could say they live in Egypt? I mean, to me, that cancels out in Nazareth. Oh, there it is. Oh, but Egypt. That's a stonemason's wonderland. All the architecture. Hmm. Some of it will last. What? The wonders of Egypt. Some of it will still be there,
Starting point is 00:25:38 thousands of years from now, but that's mostly the exception. I don't follow. Well, think of the ruins of Jericho, in the Solomon's temple, the lost cities of Adma, Zeboim, and Zohar, even the finest stonemasonry and the sturdiest cedar planks eventually relent under the sort of weather, war, and time it's good. Pause it for a second. How cool is the whole Noah's Ark thing? What's going on right now? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:14 They're just talking about, you know, oh, it's going to be weathered. I mean, that Noah's Ark allegedly predates this moment in ancient history. And the, I don't know if you saw the video today of Lauren Witki talking. about how they believe they found petrified wood under the dirt. I didn't see that video, but I saw some post about like a scan where it looks like there's a structure that goes deep. Yeah, there's apparently like two layers and like corridors and whatnot of what appears to be petrified wood.
Starting point is 00:26:49 And so if they test it and it's gopher wood, that's a pretty good indication. The whole thing, I don't know, you know, you know, I got the little Chris Paul on your shoulder going, how do you know that? Right? I don't. But I love it. And I think it would be such a cool. I think it's something God would do, right?
Starting point is 00:27:07 Bring back the, you know, proof of ancient story of global flood, the way it was told in the Bible at the moment that the world needs the Bible more than anything else, right? Just to be clear, gopher wood is not a real wood. It's just a term in the Bible that is used. So how? So there's no wood. called gopher wood. There's no wood called
Starting point is 00:27:30 go for wood, but I think Is there a wood that is like? Yeah, so they think that it's probably Cyprus. There's probably most likely what it is or which is the wood
Starting point is 00:27:44 that Jesus is using right there to build this latrine. It could also be says cedar pine, fur, or resinous. All the woods. We're just naming all the woods now. Well, I can say
Starting point is 00:27:56 so pine is what we, typically use, like that's the softwood that we typically used in construction. Like most two by fours, you go out to the store, you buy two by four, you're getting pine. Fur is the other kind of wood that you would get. Fur tends to hold up a little better in weather. It's more weather, like resilient to moisture and temperature fluctuations than pine is. So that would make sense that you would be like, pine doesn't make sense at all. I don't
Starting point is 00:28:23 think it would be pine. But fur, I could see. Cedar, certainly. because that has a lot of resin in it, so that's going to hold up a lot better over time. Cyprus, I think, probably makes the most sense. But anyway, we're getting off on a... Oh, as this says some tree gopher as meaning cofer, which is the pitch. That doesn't make sense.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Okay, yeah, yeah. So the pitch is like the is like the tar that they put. So like when they're, especially like in shipbuilding, it's like you put the wood. you know like the laugh like side by side and then you put a pitch over it which is like a tar and that seals up all the cracks and they did they did put pitch on it i think in the biblical story it's been a while since i've read the noah story i think they did they did put pitch on it in the in the noah's arc story i believe well my a i fact checking your a i says that cypress is the
Starting point is 00:29:19 most common but i also would think it's possible that there was a wood that was known as gopher wood pre-flood. Yeah, possible. It's not around anymore. Or it got renamed post-flood. Yes. I don't know how you'd test that or no. What a bummer.
Starting point is 00:29:34 I was after sure there was a gopher wood. Yeah. Yeah. So you would know. Okay. Way off. But, but, but, but yeah, it's, it's, um, the whole, the whole Noah's arc thing is it's, it is cool.
Starting point is 00:29:47 Yes. It's very cool. And that site is apparently, you know, the site that has been associated. Zach was talking about that in our chat. today, like the site that's been associated with where the arc landed in this, you know, the, the archaeological record on this thing and the hoaxes and the, you know, alleged cover-ups by nation states goes back, oh, a couple hundred years. Yeah, I did see that the archaeologists who were involved.
Starting point is 00:30:17 They were saying that, like, they've been involved, you know, they've gone and done a bunch of other like ships like you know like old they're like never have experienced anything like this in terms of the attacks they're like they're just being viciously attacked for doing this and like never before have they ever experienced anything from an archaeological dig where they're getting viciously attacked and so they're like that feels like you're over the target yeah and i just think it would be totally um in you know in the in within god character with all of the nonsense we're dealing with in this world and how fallen and how despicable and all the conduct and all the things for God to bring back Noah's Ark like
Starting point is 00:31:03 indisputably this is Noah's Ark kind of thing right fits the story fits the location fits all the things for him to bring it back at this time I mean I say accelerate to that yeah yeah great this latrine what was the polite thing they told us to call it a public amenity yes this very fine public yeah that's also nothing worth pointing out I mean there's an incredible amount of labor going on here and this is for a public toilet that's what they're building so yeah and they mentioned that in an earlier season when fatty they were talking about how they met Jesus I think or maybe it was when someone knew came on and that he said
Starting point is 00:31:54 mentions that he met him building a toilet. And we get to see that now, but it made himself low. And then Little James, I think it was Little James was offended because they, Thaddeus said that in front of the women. Oh, that's right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think that's what happened.
Starting point is 00:32:10 Yep. Many things we're building in a few thousand years no one will even know it existed. Or that we existed? Wow. More so, rabbi, by the way. Excuse me?
Starting point is 00:32:39 We are a pair of men building a privy in a small town in northern Galilee in a tiny country under the occupation of the enormously powerful Roman Empire. But what have I told you? I have something else in mind from my life and yours. Like what? Something that will last. A kingdom not built by hands. A fortress stronger than stone.
Starting point is 00:33:11 But you want to join me and help him. I don't understand what you're saying. I mean, you don't have the means to own land or a home and get your offering to hire me for my services. Not the ones you're using today. Then what? I'm not good at anything else. That's what you think.
Starting point is 00:33:43 That's what I know. Forgive my boldness, but I'm a little uncomfortable. Why is that? Is you just... You don't know me. Yes, I do. We met a half an hour ago. Join me.
Starting point is 00:34:01 In doing what? I told you. Building a new kingdom. Just the two of us. No, but I have to start somewhere and we're better than here. With who better than you? You can definitely do a lot better than me. And here, look no offense to Bess Seda.
Starting point is 00:34:30 I said I don't like to make fun of small places. I'm getting back to work. I have wages too cliff for my labor. for my labor. Leave with me tonight. Final offer. You haven't made an offer. A new kingdom.
Starting point is 00:34:49 Eternal value. What's the pay? The pay? Yes, the income, the daily rate, housing arrangements. What you have, that all worked out? There is no pay. At least not in the earthly sense. My rabbi.
Starting point is 00:35:04 And I'm asking you to follow me. It was nice meeting you. It'd be part of changing the world. Become part of a family, not of relatives, but of blood barns just the same. Spend your days with some of the most interesting, unfettered, funny, driven, brave, nurturing. Smart, strong, passionate, fiery, loyal. very, loyal, loving, imperfect people. To ever walk the earth, you will see and do things you cannot imagine.
Starting point is 00:36:21 You'll be adored, hated, needed, lost. You will live everywhere. You will lose friends. You will lose all your friends. And your own life. You will go to the ends of the earth. and yet be part of the beginning of the greatest movement on earth. I will say you were a fool and that I was a fool and that it was all a lie that
Starting point is 00:37:18 it was all a lie that call us heretics and liars and frauds. Others will celebrate and venerate your memory and call you a saint. But none of that's the point. The point is that you will have said yes to the world's no. That you hoped against hope and believed against belief that you surrendered everything and held fast to the very end. Are you okay? Yeah. What?
Starting point is 00:38:41 Thad, they said take an ambiguous and evasive route. Not the longest one possible. I was the last relief. Seven, eight, nine, ten. There's still one more to come, Mark. He wants put himself at Jesus' right hand. Don't you want to be at his left? No, I'm good.
Starting point is 00:39:06 I'm happy to sit next to you. Learned his lesson. Yeah. We ready for this? Yes. No. Ready for what? Whatever is about to happen?
Starting point is 00:39:41 Only one way to find out. Can we define ready? Does it matter whether we are ready or not? Matthew. You changed. Who cares if you're ready? I don't know, Philip, it would be nice to know what we're talking about here. What's the prevailing theory?
Starting point is 00:40:25 All right. So I like the way that they handle the, that they do the, because you don't really have any context to what's happening, other than you kind of figure that this is supposed to be connected to the Last Supper, but you also aren't really quite sure when Thaddeus is walking through the street. I feel like that is a lot of foreshadowing, because the way that they intercut Jesus is. is like soliloquy
Starting point is 00:40:55 in describing basically what's going to happen in the future. And then they cut in him walking with a hood on. He's walking incognito. That's what they all were trying to be incognito to get to the dinner. But this is what their life is going to be like after the crucifixion. Their life is going to be living in the shadows, living incognito. He's completely by himself because they're all going to split up. right and then they cut in the scene of him preaching i don't think somebody will probably correct
Starting point is 00:41:25 me i don't think we saw thadias preaching the whole series they really they really they really focused more on simon preaching and then i remember um jesus said to somebody else i forgot who it was he's like don't worry you will be preaching too i think it was john um where he said don't worry you'll be preaching soon enough um all of you will so it's like you see this you see thadius preaching to a lot of people, like a large group of people. You see him walking by himself and this is all, I think, foreshadowing of what's going to happen. And I also think, what was your thought I had? There's another thought that I had, but I'll kick it to you. It'll come back to you. No, I think that's a great point. I didn't even think of that, that it's foreshadowing,
Starting point is 00:42:10 kind of their, you know, disperion. And we saw them in the episode where Matthew, They were very old and Matthew goes and visits Mary in the cave, right? And so I think you're right about that. Remember at the end of the last episode, they didn't know where he was, right? Thaddeus was the only one missing at the end. And also in the last episode, we got everybody's flashback of where they were before they knew Jesus, right? And we didn't get it for Thadius and then he was missing. And so the way that they've chosen to do this is that it takes you back to the beginning, right?
Starting point is 00:42:53 And that's a cool way to do it because this whole season has been, you know, with the last supper, we've been going in reverse. And now with those montage, those flashbacks, we are, you know, going in maybe in reverse in order of calling. I don't know. I haven't reconciled that. But we get to the start of the ministry. And I just love the pitch.
Starting point is 00:43:16 like imagine the intense first of all the intensity of it you can see it that is just like oh it's nice to meet you i'm out of here like what's your day rate what are we doing like how am i going to make ends me and jesus is like no man like i'm offering you to be a part of this movement that's going to change the world and there's no pay yeah yeah actually you're going to lose everything thing you're going to lose all your friends and you're going to die. It's not a hopium pitch. It's not, he is not, he is not selling him on anything other than reality, right? It's going to be amazing.
Starting point is 00:43:57 Also, it's going to suck. And that's life in some ways, right? Like that's, that's how this, this journey of life goes. But it's certainly the journey for the follower of Jesus because we have to be in the world and not of it and turn the other cheek. and leave vengeance for God and all of these other things that make us deny our flesh. And also they're going to hate us for that. And eventually, and, you know, happening now in many places around the world, persecute the Christian for their beliefs.
Starting point is 00:44:32 Jesus foretold it was going to happen. It has happened throughout history. It is happening even today. And so the pitch was very raw and very real. And but, but he received, I think, this is my interpretation, Thaddeus received that pitch. It was given in and he received it in the spirit. And that's why he's like captivated and can't speak and trembling and tearing up because he's changed in that moment. And really beautifully done. Again, as we talked about at the top, it's all showrunner invention, but it was my favorite scene in this. episode and we had you know we said we were going to keep this to a shorter episode I propose and we can do whatever you want next week we can get to anything that we don't get to in this episode I propose we skip the whole Claudia uh pilot atticus plotline until next week because I think we can
Starting point is 00:45:28 spend more time on it the two the two scenes that I really want to play and discuss are when the whole gathemite thing is like half the show but the scene where Jesus is in the garden he goes deeper into the garden and he sees Abraham and Isaac. I think that that's a really important one to play and the end with Judas, obviously, I think is a point. I also remember what I was going to say. To your point, the flashbacks we got last week in the last episode was all what everybody was doing before they met Jesus, right?
Starting point is 00:46:06 Because we got the benefit of meeting all the apostles as, before they met Jesus. So we saw their meeting. Obviously, Little James and Thaddeus were the exception. And so with the two of them, with their flashbacks, we actually get their meeting of Jesus. And yeah, I think the timing, like breaking Thadius is out as like its own individual because you get the pitch from Jesus.
Starting point is 00:46:36 That makes sense that like why you would break that out in a separate episode. from the others so it's stand alone but also why you would wait until now which is this is basically the end of this is the end of act one i would argue right um i mean maybe maybe maybe you maybe you would call it act two but i mean if we're going to say act one is this act two is the act two is the crucifixion and then act three is it's resurrection yeah as a resurrection and then everything and then the sequel is the book of acts yeah yeah if that If that's how we're looking at it, then this is the end of Act 1. You wait till the end of Act 1 to show what happened at the very beginning
Starting point is 00:47:18 because it's way more meaningful. It hits way harder because the audience now has the benefit of having seen everything they've been through and all the things that Jesus lays out. We now have an appreciation for what that means. It obviously is going to get way worse from here. But we at least understand a fact simply. of what he means when he's like you're going to be hated.
Starting point is 00:47:44 Yeah. Yeah. I completely agree with that. Just Kath, a.k.a. Ms. Mouser sent us a Badlands boost for $25. Says, thank you, Ghost and Ash. And thank you, chat. God bless. And thank you. We appreciate you so much.
Starting point is 00:48:01 And if you're watching this, this show is recorded because Ghost, you know, has a real job now. And so we do, If you put Rans in, we will try to grab them and read them. Obviously, we were otherwise detained last Friday. But the best way to support the show is with Badlands Boost. And you can find that at Badlandsmedia.tv slash boost. If you leave a boost, we will read it on the following show.
Starting point is 00:48:29 I completely agree with that. I also think, so getting back to kind of how we spend the rest of our time, I think that Nico also we should leave to next week Because I feel like that's a much lot I think we could do a whole show on the 15 second scene Was Nicodemus And so yeah yeah yeah Yeah I agree yeah
Starting point is 00:48:50 So I think we do the moment in Gassemone So I'll just while you find that spot Where it's the Isaac and Jacob Or Abraham and Isaac Part of it The they leave the dinner Mark follows them. They leave the dinner, you know, and head into the Garden of Gassimini.
Starting point is 00:49:11 And Jesus is talking to his disciples and he says, I'm going to go in here and pray, I need you guys to keep watch. I need you to stay vigilant and keep watch, knowing that they're going to fall asleep, right? And I think this is metaphor as well, because we are told to be watchmen's on the wall. We're told to be vigilant, you know, wise as serpent, innocent as doves. but to know the times and the seasons and to be watching for his return. And these guys were told to watch, you know, while he was praying. And they keep falling asleep.
Starting point is 00:49:46 And that's like that it's just such a strong metaphor for the, you know, the walk as the follower of Jesus. Yeah. Like you're destined. You're destined to fail. You're destined to fall because we're all sinners. Right. Like you're not going to live a sinless life. you're not going to be Jesus.
Starting point is 00:50:05 You are not going to be able to live a perfect, sinless life on this earth. And you have to reconcile that for yourself, right? You have to reconcile, like, have the self-awareness and the kind of internal, the ego death that we've talked about. You have to have ego death, but you have to admit,
Starting point is 00:50:26 before you can have ego death, you have to admit that you're a sinner, saved by grace, and that you can't get there without the, atoning sacrifice of the blood of Jesus. And so I think them falling asleep in the way they've chosen to portray that in this is a good metaphor for that. And,
Starting point is 00:50:42 you know, Simon is still like, oh, no, it won't happen again. It won't happen again. I got this now. I just,
Starting point is 00:50:49 I justosed off for a second, it's fine. It won't happen again. And then it does because it will. And that's, that's a good message, I think. I love the part where he comes back out.
Starting point is 00:51:01 I think it's the second time he catches them asleep. And they're literally children. Like they're like they are themselves in their child form. And Jesus doesn't even seem mad. He just kind of looks at him. And I think in that moment, it's like Jesus realizes he, because he's very annoyed the first time he comes out. He's like, really?
Starting point is 00:51:23 Like you couldn't stay awake? He's like, really, dude? You couldn't stay awake. And then the second time he comes out, he sees him. And he's like, okay, these are, I'm, I'm dealing with children. Like I'm, not that these three are,
Starting point is 00:51:35 you know, too immature to be up with this. It's the fact that we're all children. We're all, we're all in the divine, on the divine scale, we are all children because we are human and we are totally incapable of living.
Starting point is 00:51:52 Yeah, we're totally incapable of living up to, uh, living up to God's standard and Jesus is standard, frankly. And so because of that, we're children. We're always going to fall asleep. We're always going to fail no matter what happens, no matter how old we get, we're still children in that sense. And I think that's what Jesus is seeing
Starting point is 00:52:11 there. And then he walks away and the camera, like as he walks across the camera, they go back to being adults. But yeah, so I thought that was very, very clever the way they shot that. I think that part is right after this part. So we could just show the part with the kids. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But the part that we just, I was just playing what would the sound off while on there. I kind of like was going back and forth and like what the meaning of that part was. The first time I watched it because he's because he's sitting there like, shit like he's sitting there shivering.
Starting point is 00:52:45 Um, he's like crying. He's, or you know, he's very upset and he's saying like, I don't know if I can do this. He was telling the apostles before. He's like, I'm,
Starting point is 00:52:55 I'm, I'm so sad. Like my soul is full of sorrow. The first time I watched it, I thought, I was like, was he talking about the crucifixion? Is he talking about the torture? I mean, obviously that would be daunting. And I mean, you would get anxiety. Anyone would get anxiety of that from that. And Jesus, I think it has already expressed that to some extent. His anxiousness of that. But the second walk, like the second watch, like watching through it, I now wonder, like, is this moment, this is where the sin is being put on him right now. Like even now, which I've never really. thought about because I always just kind of thought about that happening on the cross but it's like is that process beginning now right and that's what he is beginning to suffer from he's suffering and he's feeling the sorrow because as the sin is being like put on him he is being
Starting point is 00:53:49 spiritually distanced from God right I mean that's that's the dynamic that's described in the Jesus is? Yeah. I mean, isn't that, isn't that the dynamic that's described in the Bible is that as the sin comes into him, he gets further and further away from God. And then it gets to the point where God literally has to leave. And he's completely alone. And he's like, God, why have you forsaken me? And then. I don't know. I've never, I've never heard that before. I think that the moment on the cross, he has, he has, God turns his face. God turns away. And he and he experiences that separate. But I don't know that I've heard that that's happening that that's happening on a longer timeline. No, no, that's not that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying I wonder if that's what we're like showrunner invention. Like is that what the interpretation is here? Because the first time I watched it through, I thought he was just agonizing over the anticipation of being tortured the death. No, yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:49 No, I don't think that bothered. I mean, he's going to feel it. It's going to hurt. but he knows that's coming. I always take it as his, the sorrows is that he's, they don't get it. Like that this, it's made so that this is necessary. And I think that's a big part of why in the scene we're about to watch,
Starting point is 00:55:09 we're going back to Abraham, which is the start of this whole thing with the deliverance of a Messiah for the chosen people in the seat of Abraham. And it's one of the most, you know, I would argue, misusey. used references in the Bible. We talk about this a lot. You and I in the various content that we do, Genesis 12.3, I will bless those who bless you. I will curse those who curse you. And through you, all the families of the earth will be blessed. He's talking to Abram in that moment. He hasn't had his name changed to Abraham yet. And that part through you, all the families of the earth will be blessed. That's the seed. And that seed is leading to the Messiah, which is Jesus. So I love this scene because the
Starting point is 00:55:53 original sacrifice sent your first born child to be sacrificed, right? That was the original, and God sends a lamb instead. The way that they depict this is that the sacrifice is carrying the wood to be burned, right? For his own, for his own sacrifice, the sacrifice, Isaac, is carrying the wood up the hill to where he's going to be sacrificed. God provides another way, right the way that god provides is the seed through that line through abraham is jacob that seed is provided down through all the generations through the line of david resulting in jesus of nazareth who also carries the wood of his destruction up the hill to the place where he dies and i think it's really beautiful the way that they did this and um and that's that that's it's it's it's it's
Starting point is 00:56:52 It's really important to know that. And I feel like a broken record on this show about that kind of the blood really matters. And it goes back to the beginning of this story, right? This moment with Abraham and Isaac predates the temple, predates David, predates Solomon, predates all of this stuff that got packed onto Abraham had faith. He didn't want to do it. He and Sarah had waited to have a child for like a hundred years. And they finally had a child and God says, give it to me. And that amount, that faith, the faith of Abraham to trust God that whatever God was going to do in that exchange was for Abraham's good is why Abraham is righteous.
Starting point is 00:57:44 And that, and this, Jesus going to the cross is that, you know, get in trouble for this, but the, the, the bookend of that story, right? That blood debt is solved, cured once and for all with the blood of Jesus on the cross at Calvary. And so that's, that's what I think they're doing here. I think they do it really effectively.
Starting point is 00:58:10 And it's really important for people to understand why this way, right? Like why, why was Jesus a Jew? And I know, don't get into all. the, you know, is that the right word to refer to, et cetera, et cetera, right? Like, there's a, there's a lot of outrage that results from word choice these days. But why, why did he have to die? We got in, I got in an argument with that lady at Deadwood, where my face did things, right? About, you know, did Jesus, did Jesus not actually die? Was he in a coma? And he never, and he never,
Starting point is 00:58:51 died right there's a lot of things the the the story of the life and ministry of jesus christ up to and including his crucifixion and resurrection is it's it's really easy to understand if you understand the system that he was being sacrificed within right you understand why the pharisees found him so offensive you understand that the gospel of jesus christ is in the tap of the wilderness the design of wilderness tabernacle, the scriptures that describe and design the wilderness tabernacle when they're wandering for 40 years after coming out of Egypt, this story is one story. And it connects. And this sacrifice fulfills what happened at the sacrifice at the beginning, which is Abraham
Starting point is 00:59:42 and Isaac. And that's what I think they're doing here. And I think it's beautiful. Yeah. And I mean, it's notable that we just saw, I mean, if you were, social media all in the past week. You just saw, especially in Brooklyn,
Starting point is 00:59:57 the Orthodox and Hasidic, I guess it's the chicken thing. Yeah, the caparote. Caparote. Caparote. Yeah, whatever it is. Yeah, they put all their sins on the chicken and they wave the chicken around their head and then they smash its head on the ground.
Starting point is 01:00:14 And they put all their sin. They know there's a sin debt. They know there's a sin debt that has to be atoned, but they can't atone for it the way that their books told them to. Yeah. So they're putting their sins on the chicken and then they're killing and then they're smashed the chicken on the ground and. There's also an old Appalachian concept of,
Starting point is 01:00:34 and I don't know if it's just Appalachian, but that's how I know it, of the sin eater. So one person in the community that becomes sort of the kind of scapegoat for all the sinners in the community. There's a lot of, there is an inherent knowing that you have a moral debt. It's a question of who you have a moral debt too. And the world will try to convince you that you have a moral debt to other figures within the world.
Starting point is 01:00:55 But from a soul level, we have a moral debt to God. And the only way, in my opinion, my belief, the only way to reconcile that moral debt to God is through the blood of Jesus. Yeah. And so... Not a chicken. The reason I asked the question before that I asked is because you'll hear Jesus here say. And I kind of like picked up on this more the second time I watched it. I'm sure I heard it the first time, but I was very bothered the first time I watched this through
Starting point is 01:01:24 because I was very put off by the fact that he was agonizing so much over the anticipation of being of what was about to happen because my interpretation of it all had always been that he was way more stoic about that aspect of it. Now, I think what they're doing here in the show is that they are, like this whole show has been about humanizing Jesus. Like they've been humanizing him. They've been, he's reiterated on multiple moments,
Starting point is 01:01:54 especially with Lazarus. I'm human. Like, I'm a human. So like, like, like, I think they're,
Starting point is 01:01:59 yeah, they're really flushing that part out of him. That he's, he is a human. Holy God and fully man. He's not, he's not like a super, he's not just like some superhero,
Starting point is 01:02:09 superhuman. He's human. So I think that part of it is certainly being emphasized. But it did bother me the first time I watched it because, he had just gotten done lecturing Peter, who he referred to as Simon in that moment because he was so frustrated with him, about how the body is weak.
Starting point is 01:02:28 The body is weak, the body is weak. It's all about, he's like, the spirit is willing, but the body is weak. And then he turns around, and then it's like he's almost having that same dynamic happened with him where he's like, because he says, here in the scene, he says, is there another way?
Starting point is 01:02:43 He's like, you, you spared Isaac. Is there another way to do it? Is there any other way we can do this? Does it have to be this way? Is there any other way we can do this? And so that's why I asked through like the second viewing, is he agonizing over, and again, this is show writer invention. So this is not biblical.
Starting point is 01:03:01 This is not scripture. But is he agonizing over the physical part of it? Because I always kind of interpreted that he like was. Let's read it. Yeah. Or is he agonizing over the fact that all the sin is being put on him. And what are the consequences of that? Because I think the consequences of that are going to be explored in this Mel Gibson movie.
Starting point is 01:03:26 I think that's what Mel Gibson has talked about. He's going to explore what actually happened in those three days, like when he was separated from God and he was sent to hell. And it's like what actually happened there? I think that's a fascinating exploration. What actually happened according to Mel Gibson, who I believe has a very Catholic-centric worldview, if I'm not mistaken. Jacob? Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. So what the scripture says about this in Gisemite, because it's not, you know, it's not the level of depth and intensity that they have. But it is not insignificant as well. So from Matthew 26 to 36, sorry, chapter 26, verse 36. Then Jesus went with them to a place called Githemeni and he said to his disciples, sit here while I go over there and pray. And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to say, to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, my soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch with me. And going a little farther, he fell in his face and prayed,
Starting point is 01:04:29 saying, Father, my father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I will, but not as I will, but as you will. And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, so you could not watch with me for one hour, watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed. My father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done. And again, he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, sleep and take your rest later on. See the hour is at hand, and the son of man
Starting point is 01:05:15 is betrayed into the hands of sinners rise let us be going see my betrayer is at hand yeah see so i mean like this is a pretty i mean i feel like what what we're seeing on screen is a pretty accurate depiction of what um like what you just read and seeing we don't know what visions he had right because like he hangs out with dad here in a little bit and we'll we'll get into all of that and next week's or i don't know if all of it but into some of it in um next week's episode where we're not trying to get through an episode and also fully analyze it. We'll just be doing the analysis, which will be more fun. But we don't know any of that, right?
Starting point is 01:05:54 Yeah, but I'm just saying the dialogue, like the dialogue of what he's saying to the, oh, sure. Like what he's saying to the disciples, what he's kind of muttering under his breath to himself. It kind of like, that all seems to be accurate. And I think the powerful thing. I don't think he was afraid of death, though. I don't think he was afraid of death either. That's what, that's what bothered me the first time I saw this is I was
Starting point is 01:06:14 was like, I've always thought of Jesus being way more stoic in the face of death. I feel like we've been watching him get more and more annoyed at how they aren't getting it. They aren't moving into it. They aren't rising to the occasion. They aren't waking up, right? And the sleeping thing is a good parallel to that. They aren't waking up. And the time is out.
Starting point is 01:06:44 They have time has run out. But it's interesting now because now like watching the like it really helps seeing the agony like being being literally portrayed on screen by like an actor. Because that doesn't necessarily come through in the scripture like in the reading. But but having watched it and then he listening to you read the scripture, there is absolutely a parallel happening right right here where like he's going back and forth. He's going into this put this garden to pray. he's agonizing over what is about to happen he's basically asking god for an alternative path he's like is there any other way we can do this is it have to be this way he then comes out and he is scolding his disciples because while the spirit is willing the body is is is like isn't
Starting point is 01:07:32 up to it that's what's happening to him in the garden though like his spirit is willing he's like whatever your will is god i will do it i'll do it but he's also agonizing over the fact that he's he's about to be sacrificed. So it's like they're the same failure that he's scolding his disciples for. He's kind of facing that challenge. And all of that, it seems to me like seeing it on screen and just kind of like clicking right here, that's the human. Like that's the human element of best.
Starting point is 01:08:00 The human side of Jesus kind of being purged or almost or almost being like, I don't know the word. Well, being fully God and fully man. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He was no more sinful than the lamb that was slaughtered for the sins, you know, prior to this, you know, back, particularly back before the kingdom fell to Babylon and the Ark of the Covenant was lost. But he's no more sinful than Isaac was, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:34 He is a, he's actually less sinful than both of those things because he was perfect. I think he knew from the very beginning, you know, in the beginning was the word and the word was God and the word was God. I think he knew from the very beginning what the goal was, what the plan was, right? And he's trusting the plan. There's definitely trust the plan, yeah. Well, you know, yeah, he knows the plan. But there's that moment where he says, you know, no one knows the time or the hour,
Starting point is 01:09:01 not even the son, only the father. And so there is, there is something distinct about his humanity that does not. not detract from his divinity, but it makes him unique among every human that's ever walk the earth. And his, yeah, his, I think that his, I don't, I don't think his sorrows have anything to do with his own pain. I think his sorrows have to do with the fact that he has had these guys for years at this point. And they're representative of all of us, right? In terms of, you know, certainly all of us that are followers of Jesus, that kind of struggle. I want to sit on your right hand and my brother will sit on your left hand. Do you know what
Starting point is 01:09:47 you're asking for? Of course you don't because you're looking for status. Why are you looking for status? Do you remember where I found you? Right. It's like everything, I don't know if everything is the right word. I don't know if it's an absolute. But the majority of the things that God wants from our heart are the opposite of the things that our heart wants in the flesh. Right? It's it's the turn the other cheek instead of punch him in the face. It's it's it's it's an inversion and that that from from the flesh and that honors God and they don't get that yet. When did we see him just you know kind of overwhelmed with joy? Gaius? You don't even have to get just just say it. I can't have you in my house.
Starting point is 01:10:36 I'm not worthy to have you on my house. But I know that you have the power that if you just say it, it'll be done. And he never doubted it once. And he walked home with a smile on his face because he knew that someone's going to be healed. That level of faith and trust is what he's looking for. He has, you know, I don't know, 80% of it from these guys. But then he sees that he says, stay awake and they're sleeping.
Starting point is 01:11:00 Which again, I also think is a warning for the future. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And again, but it's also important to... Maybe he weeps over us, not himself. That's what I'm saying. Yes, yes. But I think the agony, I would agree.
Starting point is 01:11:13 I think a lot of this agony is about, more about the people than the humanity than himself. Because it's very narrow, ghost. The gate is very narrow. There's one way, one path. And there's way, like that, and it's a minority that, and particularly, you know, the paralysis of the church, ineffectiveness of the church in the West, and certainly in America,
Starting point is 01:11:43 it should be more. But we can't get out of our own way. We can't get out of our own flesh. And that's why I think he leaves. Yeah, but we should also point out that there was still suffering and there was still like it wasn't a painless death. And it could have been a painless death. I mean, he's God.
Starting point is 01:12:04 So he could have made of the painless death, but he chose not to make him. Trying to give him drugs and he denied him. Yeah, exactly. So it's like, like there was pain and there was agony. There was physical agony and anguish. But I don't think that what we're seeing in this scene, I would agree that I don't think that we're seeing him agonize it like for himself. I don't think he's weeping for himself.
Starting point is 01:12:26 I would agree with that. And that's what bothered me the first time I watched it is because I was like, are they trying to present him as like being like, like, yeah, being afraid or like being, being self, like self-centered. It's like, because his whole ministry is about selflessness and service. So it's like that would be a little bit of a contradiction. I think you're on to something with it being the humanity because remember, um, when he raised Lazarus, he knew he was walking over. He, okay, first of all, when he got the letter that Lazarus had died. Yep. Or that Lazarus was sick.
Starting point is 01:13:02 He's about to die. Yeah, sick and about to die. He could have stopped it, but he couldn't stop it because he needed him to, you know, he needed to perform that miracle. It was the final public miracle that he performed. But when he got that letter, he showed sorrow over it. And when he learned that Lazarus had died, he had sorrow. And when he went to Bethany and was met, you know, Mary and Martha came running out.
Starting point is 01:13:31 And where were you? Where were you? Why weren't you here? Why didn't you fix this? Before he goes to raise Lazarus from the dead, fully knowing what he's going to do, he wept. It's the shortest verse in the Bible.
Starting point is 01:13:47 Jesus wept. And it's over Lazarus. And in that moment before he raises him from the dead. And so I think you're right. You're on to something about the humanity of it, that that is the normal human feeling, human emotion, he would have felt all those things, too, even knowing what's coming. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 01:14:09 All right, let's play. Speaking of agony, I mean, this guy's agony. Can you imagine? Yeah, this guy's agony because of what he's about to do, yeah. Yeah, as a parent. Can you imagine this? No. That's a hard test, real hard test.
Starting point is 01:14:34 And also contrast with the Greek king that John was explaining to the tapestry. that he was explaining to Jesus, the Greek king who willingly sacrificed his kid to win a war. And Jesus was like, yeah, my father never asked for that. He just did it. Yeah. I'll be right there. Are you sure? Yes, we can step into my back.
Starting point is 01:15:32 You're too all the way of the mountain. I'll pretend you didn't say that. I'm just like to hurt. All right. I'm old if you say so. Let's go. Abba? Yes?
Starting point is 01:15:54 You have the fire and I have the wood. But what is the lamb? God will provide for himself a lamb for the burnt offering myself. But how? He doesn't go through with it, young Isaac.
Starting point is 01:16:13 The test. All things are possible for you. Be another way. If you're willing, I'll be your name. That's the part where he sees them as kids. No, I think this is the first one. That's the first one.
Starting point is 01:18:42 Yeah, this is when he flips out at Simon. Yeah. You couldn't watch with me for one hour. I'm sorry, just those stuff for a second. Do you remember how I taught you to pray? Of course. And lead us not into... Temptation.
Starting point is 01:19:05 Temptation to sleep in this moment. Pray that you may not enter into temptation. Did you just call him Simon? Temptation. I already said it. Spirit indeed is willing. No, it was just a moment. It won't happen again. Okay, boy.
Starting point is 01:19:29 I know you want to. You want to be prepared for anything. We are. But then there is the reality of the body. Remember at dinner when I told you about the helper that I would send? The spirit. I have warned you there is hardship coming. Okay.
Starting point is 01:20:07 Maybe we play the second one, which is Jesus talking to Joseph. And we've got the valley of dry bones with Elijah. This whole thing. I mean, a show run invention for a lot of this, right? These are scripture passages that are referenced. But they are put into this scene as sort of hallucinations visions of Jesus while he's in Githemi. Is he'll not Elijah? And these bones live?
Starting point is 01:21:51 Oh, Lord. So that's, pause for a second. That's a reference to Ezekiel 37 versus 1 through 14, allegedly referring to the whole house of Israel. Ezekiel sees a valley of dry bones that come together, grow flesh, and then come alive when the ruach, the spirit, enters them. Verse 11 explains the meaning, the bones are the whole house of Israel in exile
Starting point is 01:22:56 and saying their hope is lost. God promises to open their graves and bring them back to the land. In context, it's primarily about national restoration, which comes through Jesus. And so the rejection of Jesus is a rejection of God. And we see that with the chicken. Yes. Yeah. So we're seeing, I think what we're seeing the showrunners do is the fulfillment.
Starting point is 01:23:24 Right. You're seeing these things, these, these Old Testament promises being fulfilled through Jesus Christ. Yeah. So that's probably the second time where he leaves that he doesn't wake them up. He just goes back in. And then I think here he sees his dad, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:23:53 So this is where it's like he's not even mad. He's disappointed. Not mad. I'm just disappointed. I'm not mad. I'm disappointed. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:24:13 There they are. little dumplings. I remember where we started season one, episode three with him with the children. It's like he's looking at them. He's like, what I'm asking of you, you're incapable of doing as your children. Like the same way, like you're asking a kid to stand watch. Like stay awake all night and stay and watch. A child can do that, right?
Starting point is 01:24:43 And I think that's a metaphor for like human beings instead. Yeah. Okay. let's move to the end with the hours at hand we can come back and play the Joseph scene if we want to next week but yeah here and by the way like these like the reaction of these guys like are you are you really surprised Jesus said yeah but like let's go meet let's go meet the traitor betrayers here and then they're like who is it it's like well I don't know guys like look around who's missing yeah who left the last who left the dinner, like, who said, like, three days ago, like, like, we can, we, once Jesus is killed by the Romans, we can go looking for the real Messiah. Like, yeah. I mean, like, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:31 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Back it up to where they don't seem. That was, it was very dramatic. That's probably good. Very dramatic the way they brought this about. Look.
Starting point is 01:25:52 They're all, like, shocked. Like, what's happening? That guy works the kind. Is that Malachi? Yeah, movie. I like that. And here from Satan. You're right, too, about
Starting point is 01:26:11 similar vibe of Thaddeus in the first part. Yeah. Yeah. The hooded and the shrouded. The same shrouded. They're shrouded.
Starting point is 01:26:19 They never look at. Yeah. And now this is like he's fully gone to the dark side now. He's a complete turned. Betrayed into the hands
Starting point is 01:26:32 of Sinusicus. Yeah, Matthew looks real confused. I mean, Matthew was Like backstop checking Judas's monetary work for a little while. Yeah. And as a reminder, what should we say every episode?
Starting point is 01:26:46 Judas was stealing from the ministry. Yeah. But Matthew, how did you not figure it out, dude? Z looks like he's just going to, he's like, let me just beat him up right now. Yeah. Also, I thought autists were good at math. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:03 Putting two and two together. Yeah. A real autist would have been conspiratorial and not to figure it out. Well, he was suspicious of Judas earlier on, but he was told to let it go. That's true, yeah. Andrew's like way too surprised. You serious, bro? Yeah, it had a gesture, I mean, you can be disgusted with him right now.
Starting point is 01:27:38 I feel like one of them would be like, I knew it! Yeah, I knew it. How has nobody like composed this yet? What about Judith? Where is that guy at? Such a punch of a book face. He has you now. Do what you came to do.
Starting point is 01:28:43 that's of course how he identifies him um in a cliffhanger yeah and so so i wonder if they're just going to pick it up from that exactly they got to just pick it up from that exactly i mean Peter gets his ear cut during this yeah yeah i mean there's a lot that still happens between yeah in the scripture right so they got to pick it up they got to pick it up right well because Peter isn't peter going to cut one of the guards ears off and then Jesus is going to heal it well i will read it for you. While he was still speaking, Judas came, and he was, when he was still speaking, he said, rise and let us be going, see my betrayers at hand, which he pretty much says that in the parts of the scene that we didn't watch. While he was still speaking, Judas came one of the 12, and with him,
Starting point is 01:29:28 a great crowd with swords and clubs from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, the one I kiss is the, kiss is the man, sees him. And he came up to Jesus at once and said, Greetings rabbi, and he kissed him. Jesus said to him, friend, do what you came to do. They came and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
Starting point is 01:29:58 Oh, they cut off someone else's ear? Yeah. That's right. Yeah. When Jesus said to him, put your sword back into its place for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my father? And he will at once send me more than 12 legions of angels. But how then should the scriptures be fulfilled that it must be so?
Starting point is 01:30:18 At that hour, Jesus said to the crowds, have you come out against a robber with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day, I sat in the temple teaching and you did not seize me. But all of this has taken place that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him and fled. Yeah. So it's got to be Z then. Like Z's got to be the one.
Starting point is 01:30:39 Yeah, maybe. I wonder if it's, that would make the most sense. I wonder if it's more detailed in a different passage. So hang on a second. Matthew 26. I mean, Peter's the hothead,
Starting point is 01:30:51 but I think Z's probably the most qualified to swing of sword. So it would make sense that. Yeah. But didn't they tell Z he didn't need a sword because he was a human weapon? Yeah. But remember,
Starting point is 01:31:04 I remember Atticus gave him two swords. Atticus literally was like, here, here's two swords. And we didn't even get a chance to talk about that, talk about how Atticus is being the CIA and being like, hey, I'm going to encourage people to engage in violence so that we can then come in and be the good guys who shut it all down. That is pretty much it. It's very Hegelian from the inception of.
Starting point is 01:31:30 So Mark 1443 is nearly identical to Matthew, but adds scribes to the list of chief priests and elders. Luke 2247 says only that a crowd came with Judas leading it and doesn't say who sent them. Later in 2252, he notes that chief priest, temple guard officers, and elders had come out in person. John 18.3, John account differs the most. Judas brings a detachment of soldiers, Greek Spira, normally a Roman cohort, plus officers, from the chief priests and Pharisees carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Starting point is 01:32:07 John is the only gospel that suggests Roman soldiers were involved. And that mentions the lights, the torches and lanterns. It's like a pitchfork mob. And so, by the way, when Jesus says, like, those who live, what is they live by the sword,
Starting point is 01:32:25 live by the sword, live by the sword, live by the sword, die by the sword. Yeah, like so I would just like point to all the people who are like trying to make the conflict in the Middle East about God and about Jesus and about you know like religion it's like okay so if you if that's what this is then you know don't be surprised when you are destroyed because what Jesus said is that if you're going to go out and destroy people then you're going to be destroyed and so when it happens like don't be surprised
Starting point is 01:32:55 like don't sit there and whine about it and say well this isn't fair no it no it is fair that God already said that's what's going to happen so So I want to read this John version because it does this is where this is where in my head it was Simon who cut. I mixed up. I thought it was him getting cut. But it was, it looks like the service. So I'll just read it. Okay.
Starting point is 01:33:19 Jesus knowing all this was going to happen. This is after Judas comes in because of went out and asked them, who is it you want? Jesus of Nazareth. They replied, I am he, Jesus said. and Judas the traitor was standing there with them. When Jesus said, I am he, they drew back and fell to the ground. Again, he asked them, who is it you want? Jesus of Nazareth, they said.
Starting point is 01:33:41 Jesus answered, I told you that I am he. If you're looking for me, then let these men go. This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled. Quote, I have not lost one of those you gave me. Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. the servant's name was Malchus. Jesus commanded Peter, put your sword away.
Starting point is 01:34:05 Shall I not drink the cup the father has given me? Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him and brought him first to Anas, who was the father-in-love, Caiaphas, the high priest that year. Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people. So we're going to see all of that come back around, I think. You know, we've already seen the glimmerings of that, the seating of all of that. But in John, it is Simon. And Malchus is the little squirmy guy that answered the door at Caiaphas's house, right?
Starting point is 01:34:40 Yeah, yeah. The one who talked about the nocturnal admissions with John, yes. Oh, is that the same guy? Pull that back up, like when you see right before Judas walks out. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. That's the same guy that was talking to John? Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's the one. He's the one. He's the one. He's the one. He's the one he, the premature ejaculator is. Right, right. I did not put together that they were the same guy, but you're totally right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because he's, because that's who Judas goes to and like, knock him the door. And he's like, I'm ready to go now. Like, like, let's. And Schmuel. Right. Yeah. When Schmuel is like, I need to talk to Caiapus. And he's like, yeah, yeah, come back tomorrow. He's like, well, I know where Jesus is. Yep, yeah.
Starting point is 01:35:24 All right. And he's also the one who, the premature ejaculator is also the one who says that the Pharisees love telling people, like being gatekeepers and telling people who is and who isn't getting into heaven and all that. So it's, yeah, like they, like they love turning people away is what he said. That's their favorite thing to do. So. Okay. For the purposes of this show, we're going to play the game of lotion. as an outro, which is something that I never do.
