Barbell Shrugged - Luke Parker - Bachelorette Star Shares His Passion For Fitness — Real Chalk #91
Episode Date: September 3, 2019Although this mans first claim to fame came from the hit TV show the “bachelorette” he actually has his sights set on competing in CrossFit and eventually owning his own business in the fitness in...dustry. After meeting him, working out together, and talking — there’s no doubt that he’s got some passion. This episode touches on a little of everything in Lukes life. While the TV show may have made him look like a villain, on my show, I just want to know what makes him tick and see if there’s anything I can do to help with his future goals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Show notes: http://www.shruggedcollective.com/rc-parker ------------------------------------------------------------------------------► Subscribe to Shrugged Collective's Channel Here http://bit.ly/BarbellShruggedSubscribe 📲 🎧 Listen to the audio version on the Apple Podcast App or Stitcher for Android Here- http://bit.ly/BarbellShruggedApple http://bit.ly/BarbellShruggedStitcher Shrugged Collective is a network of fitness, health and performance shows that help people achieve their physical and mental health goals. Ladies and gentlemen, we are back. It's Tuesday. It's time for another episode of Real Chalk, and I'm so excited to drop this episode on you guys.
It's been a little bit of an anticipated episode. I was at the CrossFit Games a few weeks ago, and I met up with someone I'd never met before.
His name was Luke Parker, and he was on The Bachelorette, and I was like, oh, that's so cool.
So I talked to him about it a little bit. And obviously, he had been talking about the
bachelorette for weeks and weeks and months and maybe a year, I don't know. And he really wanted
to talk about fitness. And he really wanted to talk about CrossFit. And he had a bunch of questions
for me in terms of getting into the space and making it a career. He also had questions for
me as an athlete. Like he just was super, super excited about the whole space and everything that
was CrossFit related and everything
that was fitness related. And I just wanted to have him on the podcast and we just rap about
it publicly. You know what I mean? It's a little bit more fun that way. And he has a huge following
of people who love following him and seeing what he's up to. So I thought, you know, let's do it
on the podcast. Let's put it out there and people can get a little bit more of Luke in their life.
So super excited to have you guys listen to this episode. I'm also super excited to be back. I was just in Spain
and Portugal. My routine was completely off track and man, does it feel good to just be back home,
be back in my gym, back on my regular routine and back doing the workouts that I love to do.
So all the exciting things all just coming at us right now on a Tuesday.
So before we get into this episode, I wanted to remind you guys that the next Carb Cycle Challenge starts September 17th.
And over the next couple days, I'm going to be posting a lot of the photos from the winners from this month.
The photos are always insane.
You guys can go to jimryan.com, G-Y-M-R-Y-A-N.com, and you guys can sign up for that next challenge.
I've been getting a lot of people signing up for the challenge.
So I always like to throw it out there and give you guys the dates of when we do it.
The best thing that I have going on with that challenge right now, not only do you get a
free ebook and a free month of Chalk Online.
So you're getting a whole bunch of free workouts.
But you also get me every single week in a Facebook group doing live Q&As.
And even if it's not correlated
to the challenge, I still answer any question that anybody has. And I'm typically on there for like
20 to 30 minutes every week answering a ton of questions and having a ton of fun. And once you're
part of that challenge, you're part of that group forever. So there's tons of people in there helping
each other out, making different meals and recipes and making Excel spreadsheets to get
you through all of your numbers and help you get to your goals. I mean, it's insane. It's a really,
really great group. I'm really, really excited about it. And beyond that, it is Labor Day today.
It's Monday. It's Labor Day. You guys can listen to this on a Tuesday. But for Labor Day and for
the next couple days preceding, I'm going to be doing a buy one get one 50% off on
jimryan.com for any of my ebooks. So you guys can go on there and check out any of the ebooks that
I have and you buy one of the same or lesser value to get half off. And on top of that, I'm giving
away a free month of Chalk Online for anybody who's ever been thinking about trying it. And
the code is CARBS. It's C-A-R-B-S, all capital letters.
And you get a free month of Talk Online.
With Talk Online, you guys get a mobile app,
and you get three different workouts every single day.
The CrossFit workout, the sweat workout, and the Daily D.
And the Daily D is basically a daily dumbbell workout
that only requires a pull-up bar, a set of dumbbells, and a jump rope.
The sweat workout is mainly all conditioning,
and the CrossFit workouts are strength and conditioning stuff. So a lot of stuff going on on jimryan.com. A lot
of stuff that I'm giving away right now. It's a holiday. The challenge is coming up. A lot of
stuff to talk about. But without any further ado, let's talk to Luke about what he's got going on
and let's listen to this episode. Let's share it. If you guys love it, make sure you tag me and your boy Luke
because as much as you guys love tagging me,
I love when the guests get tagged
and they know that everybody
loved their episode as well.
All right?
So I hope you guys all had
a great Labor Day weekend.
I hope you guys go ahead
and check out everything
on JimRyan.com.
I hope you guys message Luke
and I hope you guys love this episode.
Here we go.
All right, Chalk Nation, we're out here.
We're in Madison at the CrossFit Games
watching my good friend Hunter.
I feel bad.
He didn't do all that great today
like I wanted him to do.
Me too.
How many times have you met Hunter?
I just met him in Colorado, right?
Oh, right on.
A few months ago.
Yeah, he's just an insane human being.
Yeah, I love him.
So that voice that you're hearing is Luke Parker and he was on the bachelorette that's right um how long was the show so two
months it's two months long of filming and where are you guys filming at la for three weeks then
we got to go quite a few different places in europe oh that's awesome yeah and you're from
georgia yes okay You don't have a Georgia
accent. No. Well, I'm from Florida. Okay. It's the South or it can be kind of neutral, but yeah,
I live in Georgia. So no accent. Have you like been into the whole acting thing for a while?
No, not acting, but actually how did you get recruited for that? Great question. Um, my sister
in law, after one of my serious relationships, uh, just submitted an application for me. Oh,
she did it.
Yep.
Interesting.
The rest is history.
I know the shows are really big, Bachelor, Bachelorette.
I just like, I've never really watched any of them.
I know my mom will hang up the phone on me in the middle of a conversation because it's coming on.
Yeah.
So I know it's a big deal, apparently.
And I think a lot of people on this show are like, oh, wow, they probably do know you for that.
But there's another part about you right now that I think a lot of people don't know about,
and it's that you want to get into CrossFit, and we're here at the CrossFit Games.
How does it make you feel to watch everybody out in the field?
Man, it fires me up.
It's fun, huh?
There's some fierce competitors out here.
It's intense.
I think because I just asked him how old he was.
He said he was 25.
That's correct.
That's a solid age to get into this.
For sure.
And you had a baseball background.
Yep.
What were, like, your biggest lifts in baseball?
For me personally, you know, I was always that guy that's firing the team up in the weight room.
And I'm like motivated, right?
And, you know, squats for sure.
Squats?
I always had strong legs.
What were we talking about?
What's your biggest squat?
Over 400 pounds?
Yeah, but that's unfair to talk about because now I actually have normal squatting form, like CrossFit, below parallel.
I used to, like, half squats, put a little bar low on my back, so I can't really count those lifts.
Yeah, it comes packed, though.
Like, once you start getting, like, the real technique, all those numbers will come back, in my opinion.
Yeah, so I just squatted 405 for the first time in, like, three years.
Okay.
And actually had, like, good form below parallel, like Olympic lifting CrossFit style form.
So I'm proud of myself for that.
All right.
Yeah.
Because I'm not used to like, you know, previously getting that kind of depth.
405 is a solid number.
When I first started CrossFit in 2011, there was like three dudes that could squat 365.
Now everybody can squat four.
Yeah.
But there's like a rare amount of people who squat like 450
to 500 right so it's out there for sure but i think coming into support with a 400 pound back
squat is perfect yeah so appreciate that um i think a lot of people out there don't really
understand or know that you actually want to compete definitely so what kind of steps are
we taking right now to get into it so i'm actually down in alpharetta training training think tank uh-huh oh so you're at
noah olsen's gym or no travis smear yeah yeah yeah no no pops in for sure um i didn't mean his gym
but i just i always see photos of him working out there and travis there's a there's a there's a lot
actually now of people that just go work of really good athletes that train in through there,
through a lot of the phenomenal coaches there that are actually here for the games.
So do you work out with those guys at any point ever?
They just had a games prep camp quite a few weeks ago,
and I got the chance to meet a lot of guys that qualified for the first time
and guys that have been like Travis and others.
And that's been phenomenal.
So how long have we been cross-fitting for?
So a little bit over a year.
Oh.
Yeah.
You have quite a bit of experience then.
Yeah.
Right on.
I got about a year.
What were some of the hardest things for you to learn right off the bat?
Snatches, muscle-ups?
Everything.
Basic stuff.
Everything was hard in the beginning?
Yeah.
Double-unders I struggle with.
Dude, double-unders were no joke for me for a while.
I was like, you know what it is?
It's the fucking rope.
Yeah.
So then I would, like, buy another rope. rope and i'd buy another rope and like i would
never figure out how to do dubs i would just buy any ropes and then i would like throw them light
them on fire run them over you know what i mean i was like fuck this fucking rope it's the goddamn
rope you know and then like at the time it was the first time they put the crossfit open yeah
online right it used to be like you went and did the
Open somewhere, in physical
person. And now it's
the online version. And we're like, oh shit.
Now we're going up against everybody
and blah, blah, blah. And they made the website.
That's where your scores went. And the first week
was 10-minute AMRAP, 15
snatches at 75 pounds, 30 dubs.
And that workout actually has
popped up in the open two more times
it's been in the open three times since 2011 yep so i couldn't do dubs went over and did 15 snatches
and then just fucking like tried to do 30 dubs for like nine minutes you know what i mean yes i know
exactly and then by the end of the week i had done the workout like six times like so many times
because i mean every time i did it it was like a minute, really.
And then the rest was just learning how to do dubs.
Right.
But I wanted to go to the regional so bad.
Kept doing it, kept doing it, kept doing it.
I got five rounds eventually.
Yeah.
And then all of a sudden, they put this thing on the website.
They're like, hey, the website crashed.
We're going to give everybody an extra week to do it.
And then all of a sudden, I got like eight rounds.
And it was like good enough for like top 40 in the world let's go and i was like fuck like the stress
for those of you out there right now listening if you can't do dubs yeah i think the stress of
putting them in a workout is super important i think um yeah well you have a high heart rate
for sure yeah because i think it's very easy for people to get frustrated on the on the movement
yeah and another thing that i like to tell people afterwards is, like,
you're not allowed to practice that movement for more than, like, three minutes.
So you can practice ten times a day doing dubs,
but you can't practice for more than three minutes
because then everyone needs to die.
You know, like, anybody is around is fair game.
Tax your hands, your forearms quick, your shoulders too, especially if the form.
Just taxes my emotions.
I'm just like, I hate everyone right now.
You know, like my mom could be right there smiling and I'd be like, die.
Like fucking double unders.
You know what I mean?
I'm with you.
So right on.
So dubs.
How long did it take you to get a muscle up?
I could do it before I started.
Oh.
I like just.
That took me a couple tries.
Like, but I guess the hardest thing for me was kipping.
I had the strength, but my kipping was so thing for me was kipping i had the strength but my
my kipping was so ugly yeah i look but now you got a lockdown yeah i'm gonna do like 10 in a row
yeah for sure okay yeah i'm i'm doing well with those now gymnastics has been a huge limiter
starting and i'm still like have you know a lot of more way to go like handstands and stuff like
that for sure but i'm gonna have come light years from where I started.
My number one tip for people when it comes to getting
better at handstand pushups
is twice a week,
10 to 1 ladder,
10 strict pull-ups, 10 strict
handstand pushups, 9, 9, 8, 8,
7, 7, all the way to 1.
And you should be able to do it unbroken
at some point.
And then you can add a vest or a deficit.
Or you can make the pull-up a little bit heavier and, like, add, like, 10 pounds.
It doesn't really matter.
It doesn't have to be a lot.
Just make little baby steps.
And everybody I've told to do that, including Hunter, is, like, they crush handstand push-ups now.
I love it.
Yeah.
You're not allowed to kip.
So it's strict.
I may have to adopt that.
Yeah.
10 to 1.
It's a fun workout.
It's a push-pull.
You get super pumped up. You love, like. Love the pump. Love the 1, it's a fun workout. It's a push-pull. You get super pumped up.
You love the pump.
It's a great workout to have.
It's a great workout to be shirtless doing.
It helps people insanely.
It sounds great.
It's a great workout.
I highly recommend that.
Now you're starting to get a year in.
Have you done any competitions yet?
I've done a few local competitions.
Okay.
For sure.
Getting no reps yet?
Yeah, and that's the worst.
That's the worst feeling in the world.
I'm just so frustrated.
It's like its own special skill.
Yeah.
Like how do you react to it is like how...
It's an art.
...is the rest of the workout, yeah.
Yeah, don't freak out.
Do you know my history about freaking out?
No, I did not actually.
Okay, cool.
So 2013 regionals, I was getting no-repped, and I didn't take it very well,
and I told the judge I was going to kill him.
No way.
And then it was, like, broadcasted all over the world.
You know what?
I did hear about that.
So I'm like a CrossFit baby, you know?
I'm a year into it, so I haven't heard all the stories.
It was a bad story.
And then, yeah, I got in, like, a lot of trouble.
And basically they almost kicked me out for, like, life.
Dang.
Yeah.
Dang.
It was a super big deal.
Yeah.
And Dave Castro, who's out there right now, like, he hates me.
He still does.
Really?
So he walked by me, and I'm wearing a Hunter McIntyre shirt, for those of you who can't see me.
And he doesn't like Hunter either.
So then it was just, like, me walking by was, like, he was a vampire, and I was, like, garlic just, like, walking a vampire and I was like garlic just like walking by.
He just looked at me like, oh, my God, I hate this guy.
Wow.
But it happens.
So is there anything that, you know, we could talk about now that I might be able to help you with on your journey?
Yeah, definitely.
Yeah, I'm definitely wanting to compete and trust in the process there.
And I'm looking at, you know at different opportunities of ways to create revenue.
And I'm super big into functional fitness.
And I love to champion people with their fitness journey.
And I'm looking to get into different coaching or possible boot camps or whatever that looks like.
I'm starting to try to get an idea of how my personality best fits that because I'm
a huge motivator.
I love to...
You might like big groups then.
Yeah.
Big groups are fun.
I love it.
I just did my first, like, big group class.
Michelob Ultra, the beer company.
Mm-hmm.
I'm familiar.
Yeah, they had me do, like, one big boot camp in Orange County.
It was at the San Diego Chargers football stadium.
Dang.
And it was, like, 100 people there.
And I absolutely loved it.
I mean, I coach classes all the time with, like, 50 people in them.
Like, no big deal.
But this was, like, different.
Like, I had to get up on the mic and, like, talk and, like, orchestrate all these people who really didn't have a huge fitness base.
Right, right.
And show them a style of CrossFit that they could do.
Right.
So we did like a Murph-esque workout.
Right, scaled version.
We were on the field.
So instead of a mile run, we did 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60-meter sprints.
Wow.
In partners of two.
So your partner did 10 meters, and then you went and did 10 meters.
Tag his hand.
They do 20. You do 20. 30, 30, 40, 40, 50, did 10 meters. Tag his hand. They do 20.
You do 20.
30, 30, 40, 40, 50, 50, 60.
I love it.
It was quick.
And then we did 100 push-ups, 200 air squats, 300 sit-ups.
Wow.
And then cash out with the same sprint.
Wow.
And people were smoked.
And then they were done, and they were like, oh, my God, that was so fun.
It was crazy, and like blah, blah, blah, blah.
And you're firing them up the whole time out of that, huh?
Oh, yeah.
And you have the mic.
And it's like super loud.
There's a DJ there.
And it was rad.
But you have a huge following of people.
I think that if you told everybody you're doing a boot camp, I think you'd be surprised how many people would say yes and they'd go.
That would be super fun.
That would be awesome.
And then you can go anywhere and do those.
I also like creating a product that you believe in, that you currently do.
And there's like two things out there I think that hits really hard for people.
And one of them is in the beginning stages, because a lot of your followers are probably from the show.
Like fans of the show.
Yeah, fans of the show, right?
Like how many followers did you have before the show?
1,000. 1,000. And you have what now? I think 250. 250,000, right? Like fans of the show. Yeah, fans of the show, right? Like how many followers did you have before the show? 1,000.
1,000 now?
And you have what now?
I think 250.
250,000, right?
All right, so if they're
watching that show,
they're probably not
diehard CrossFitters.
Right.
So that's good.
You'd be surprised.
I got some CrossFit.
I'm sure you have
a decent amount.
I'm sure you have
a decent amount for sure.
Good CrossFit followers.
But knowing who your people are
helps a lot.
So, I mean,
you could ask questions in your story.
If I was to make a program, would you guys like a CrossFit intensive program or would you like something more simple?
Right.
You can just do that in your story and yes or no.
Yeah, yeah.
That's how I started actually.
Wow.
I was like –
Just getting feedback.
I was like, do you guys want a kettlebell workout or you want a dumbbell workout?
Like I actually started that basic.
My first book I ever made was a kettlebell workout.
And I was like the strongest guy in CrossFit. I was squatting 500 pounds.
I did 405 for 20. I did 300 pound snatch, like a bunch of big numbers. And then it was weird.
Like Ryan Fisher's coming out with a kettlebell program. You know what I mean? Yeah. But when I traveled a lot, I used to bring a kettlebell with me all the time in the car and I just thought it
was cool. And I was like, I have a lot more people that are following me that
just want to have the first step in their fitness life right then want to snatch 300 pounds for sure
and I think a lot of the crossfitters actually out there on the field right now with a million
followers I bet you at least half of them are just like normal people that just like came across
their page they saw him on the explore page and they're like this guy looks fucking ripped boom
follow yeah they just happen to be like oh they compete in crossfit i see people in the airport all the time
all the time and they're like oh my god they don't want to take a photo with me and i'm like oh like
do you do crossfit they're like no i just like just like following you i listen to your podcast
and i'm like oh it's crazy yeah so that was my first thing that i did i started the kettlebell
book and then for me I was already making these
workouts that everybody loved in the gym and it was apparent to me that people were messaging me
all the time like we see you guys doing these workouts like and every once in a while you
screenshot them is there any way that we could like be part of these workouts and I created like
an online program and that online program just kind of like went crazy and I try to tell everybody like everything that I ever did was to get people
to stop emailing me I'm like I just don't want any more emails I just don't want to answer these
anymore so like so if you like if the same email keeps coming in I just create a product for it
wow yeah and I think that's like a really good way I feel like everybody who in the beginning
is like I need to figure out how to make money.
Those are like some of the worst ideas.
Right.
But the things that just come like super natural to you, like if you naturally have this super long warm up, that could be your thing.
That's true.
You know what I mean? Like Romwod started as like just a fun thing for people to do to warm up.
And now they have a million members at $10 a month.
Yeah.
That's insane.
It's genius.
Guess how many partners he has?
How many?
Zero.
It's just one dude making all those millions every month.
Wow.
I know.
It's crazy.
Yeah.
He's,
he hit the jackpot.
That's for sure.
So I feel like for the next like few months,
like that would be a great way for you to like kind of get into the whole
thing is to kind of figure out like what's the easiest thing for you to do.
For sure. Not like the easiest as far as in terms of work but like what just comes like so
natural to you that you think that other people would want to bite onto that and then don't be
ever be afraid to ask questions yeah and then another thing i think that's really important is
a lot of people have these great ideas these great ideas they just keep coming and they keep talking
about them and then they just never do anything so i have this kid travis in my gym okay travis kennedy he's been on the podcast you guys know him
he always ends everything with the with the word teams he's a navy seal i love it and now he's a
um an athlete in my gym and like we'll we'll be like doing workouts like in the middle of the gym
and i'll be like filming him from instagram and then he'll be like teams and he like points to
the he says teams for everything like i swear to god he'll have his first child he'll be like filming him from Instagram and then he'll be like teams and he like points to the he says teams for everything like I swear to god he'll have his first child he'll be like
oh teams like you just never know like it's just like he always says it's hysterical like if he
walked by right now he'd be like teams so we all we all say teams like we'll be like driving around
and screaming teams and stuff I love me military guys and he like really wanted to get into the
space too and he just created just like an operator fitness program and i hooked him up with someone to like make an
ebook for him wow and he was like really hesitant about it yeah and he only had like i think like
seven or eight thousand followers at the time right and after our podcast he hit 10 so once
you get 10 000 you can do swipe ups in your story yep that's when the and i was like just fucking
do it and i was like just do it and he did it and that's when the doors open up. And I was like, dude, just fucking do it. And I was like, just do it.
And he did it, and he's like, dude, I'm so happy.
Like, I can't believe.
Like, if you didn't tell me to do it, I wouldn't have done it.
And he's like, I'm making more money right now than I ever made in the military as a Navy SEAL.
Wow.
So that's, like, one thing I can definitely tell you is to figure out what it is that, you know, gets you excited.
For sure.
And then just fucking run with it.
And then worst case scenario, like, let's say it is a big boot camp.
Do a free one. Make the first one free. Like, take the pressure off. You know worst case scenario, like let's say it is a big boot camp. Do a free one.
Make the first one free.
Like take the pressure off.
You know what?
What if I don't kill it?
Make it free.
Yeah.
Fuck it.
All of a sudden you have
all this dope footage though
to market for the next one.
That's true.
Yeah.
That's very true.
There's so many little things
that kind of go along
with the whole thing.
And the learning experience as well.
Have you been like,
now that you have all these new followers,
you know how to like geek out on your Instagram?
Know how to what?
Like geek out on your Instagram and like get everybody to get excited?
Yeah, for sure.
Like all the like.
If I start leading into something, they're like, what's going on?
Like what's going to happen?
And tagging locations and putting GIFs up to like make it funny and all that.
Like there's all these studies that say that all these little things create like just massive engagement yeah excitement and trying to create like more fun like with the gifts and
then the tags i never actually got into the tags until like relatively recently for sure i was
always like ah these motherfuckers know i'm in madison yeah there's no big deal i have to tag
madison but every time you tag madison there's people here right now and they're like i saw this
guy i don't know who he is but he was around here here. And then you're, like, in Whole Foods.
And they'll just look at Whole Foods and they'll be like, oh, there he is.
Boom.
Like, I swear to God.
Like, people geek out that hard.
That's hilarious.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm excited to see what the future holds.
I just, man, I got heart for people.
Like I told you earlier in just their, like, fitness journey.
And, you know, that's why I'm in love with CrossFit.
You know, I've just embraced it just because
of the functional fitness but also to the community i'm having people that are doing
nothing but hitting you with positive energy encouraging you in your fitness journey yeah
you know holding you accountable i think that's a big thing that some people lack is accountability
and i think that's huge about the crossfit community and you have all
these different people who you have all these similarities and they get connected and they
develop this culture right in this family a lot of these boxes i mean there's some tight families
everywhere and then all these that's why i'm loving madison right now all these families are
joining together as one big crossfit functional fitness family this middle of america is like
super tight i love it yeah it's really
cool i love meeting people out here um so have you been to a regular gym since you've started
doing crossfit uh yes like a 24-hour fitness for any reason um actually sorry i didn't even
understand the question yeah so like now you've been doing crossfit for a year have you have you
gone back and just done a regular 24-hour fitness workout or Gold's Gym workout when you're traveling or anything?
Yeah, just to hang out, like, with a buddy or two, like, once or twice.
I'm only asking because you're like, I love the community vibe.
And it's like, how shitty does that feel to go to, like, 24?
Yeah.
It's fucking terrible.
Everyone's got their headphones in.
No one's talking to anybody.
And I'm just like, yo, what's up?
I know.
Can I get a spot?
Like, does anybody want to go hard in here?
You know what I mean?
Everyone's going slow.
They're going through the movements.
I'm so frustrated because nobody is doing anything correct.
You know what I mean?
At least when you're in a crossfit class. I don't want to be that guy to go, hey, man, let me help you with your squat form.
Because most likely they don't want to hear it because they think you're doing it right.
For sure.
I don't want to be that guy.
Yeah, so that's kind of what I was asking you about.
Because this is the first year in like nine. I don't want to be that guy, right? Yeah, so that's kind of what I was asking you about. Because this is the first year in, like, nine.
I started in 2010.
So, yeah, nine years that I started going to regular gyms.
Solid, yeah.
Because for me and my population of people, there is a lot of regular gym goers.
And they want to do my CrossFit program.
And I don't know what it's like to work out in 24-hour fitness.
Because they do have rigs and stuff now.
So I can make, like, there's a lot of people doing diehard CrossFit in 24-hour fitness.
That's awesome.
So I'm like, you know what?
I'm going to start working out here so I know like how to program it.
Yeah.
And people have been stoked on that.
Like I make different programs, people who go to 24-hour fitness now.
So I like broke into that little bit of a realm.
For sure.
Yeah, you just got a little bit of space um you know some dumbbells
even a kettlebell a rack you can do everything people are murdering right now on the garage gym
workouts garage gyms are sweet people just in their garage doing workouts with very limited
equipment it's limited equipment murdering that's a great niche right now i feel like there's not a
lot of them so if you have a dope house with a dope garage, I feel like that could be something you'd want to get into, to be honest.
That's true.
For sure.
And then just creating the workouts.
I think, like, the more you make workouts, the better you get at making them.
And then just have, like, your nice little niche with it.
I got this thing called the Daily D.
Yeah.
And it's kind of like I made it to make it funny. So like I have little things that say I'm getting my D in for the day or something like that.
I love the D.
Like I love New York, but I have a say that I love the D.
And then like the D is like never not hard.
Like I have all these like funny little things that go with the daily D.
And it's just workouts with dumbbells.
I got you.
A jump rope and a pull-up bar because that's all you need.
Yeah.
So it works for, like, hotel gyms and stuff like that.
That's perfect for people that, you know, travel a lot with work and stuff.
That's perfect.
But I think a lot of people, when they get into CrossFit, they want to have some sort of revenue-generating fitness thing.
And they kind of close their corners off a little bit because they think that they just need to do crossfit style stuff and i think there's just so there's so much out there
to be done there's like seriously like there's so much out there and then even the crossfit
community right now is like they love these new experiences yeah like they're all like doing
bodybuilding-esque workouts now and they're doing olympic lifting and they're doing the intervals
in class and all that and like they're not just here to like die anymore like when i first started dude crossfit
was fucking gnarly like we did everything every day like everybody worked out for like five six
hours a day nobody knew what they were doing seriously yeah we snatched educated we'd snatch
every day clean and jerk every day squat every day You'd be like, if you did 100 jerks yesterday and today, I didn't work out with you yesterday,
but I worked out with so-and-so and we did 100 jerks.
And then you're like, hey, I'm going to do this workout.
It's got jerks and muscle-ups and whatever.
We'd just be like, ah, fuck it.
It's fine.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
And now everybody's like, well, hey, dude, I'm on a program and I've got to follow this.
And it was never like that.
Get my recovery in, right?
A lot of the super OGs are not competing right now.
Like, Jason Kalipa is kind of gone.
I mean, Ben Smith is like, I'm surprised his body is still holding up.
And Rich Froning.
For sure.
Those dudes are animals.
Dude, they've been at it forever.
I remember watching videos of Ben Smith in his backyard.
And he had a rock or like a basketball or something,
and it just had so much tape around it that it equaled 20 pounds.
No way.
And he was doing wall balls on a tree and then doing muscle-ups
with rings attached to a tree branch.
No way.
Swear to God.
And then he was doing dubs like on the concrete.
So there was like an open workout.
I want to see a video of that.
That's the coolest thing I've ever heard.
Dude, I swear to God. You can go on see a video of that. That's the coolest thing I've ever heard.
Dude, I swear to God, you can go on YouTube and look it up.
That's dedication right there.
And he would get top 10 in the world in the open.
No way.
And everybody would watch his video and be like,
who the fuck is this guy?
That's incredible.
In the forest doing these workouts.
Yeah.
And he looked like nothing at the time.
He was so skinny.
And he was just handing in some of the best times anyone had ever seen.
And at the time, if you didn't do a workout in an affiliate, you had to video it.
So everybody would see the video.
You'd be on games.crossfit.com, and you'd be watching the video of him fucking throwing wall balls at a tree.
I think that's the coolest thing, though, about those, like you call them the OGs.
Those dudes that started when the sport was just up and rising.
I think it's so cool.
Like I was talking about education, you know, now that everyone's, you know, year after year after year becoming more educated on, you know, recovery.
And then also the movements and the workout, just everything, right?
And I think it's awesome to see the OGs adapting to that.
And then, yeah, like a lot of them are still in it.
I mean, yeah, granted, a few of them are pretty beat up.
I mean, anyone will be beat up, right, for years and years of training.
That's a lot to take in for anybody.
And I hate the stigma.
It's like, well, you did CrossFit for this long or whatever.
And it's like, no, you can go ahead and go to the Olympic training hall in China
and all of the coaches who lifted for 10 15 years like they're
all fucked up yeah you know what i mean it's not just crossfit it's well on your body it's heavy
weight on your joints yeah like for me i have no meniscus no cartilage up to my left knee
started with a bad snowboard accident and then like some bike accidents i used to race bmx for
a while oh for real yeah that's awesome that's how i started actually was bmx racing really that
was like my first like my first love of sports i raced from like six years old all the way to 16 wow i traveled all
over the world i was like in a magazine called bmx plus which is nasty which was like a really
cool magazine at the time and i grew up in new jersey that's dope so in new jersey if you were
good at anything like you were just like all over the announcements at school and stuff like that
like everybody knew that like i was like the bmx kid and then i started running track and then i just got into all this stuff but
it literally like i had so many different ideas of what i wanted to do out of school
and it wound up across it wound up taking over my heart too like right yeah i think when i was 20
well shit hold on i'm 30 i'll be 33 next month and i started 24 to 37 like i was like 24
yeah maybe right around your age yeah it's a good time i think i think it's a good time
how old is frazier 30 i think he's 29 he's either 29 or 30 i don't know yeah that's you're in a
solid time i think is this does anything hurt on your body at all?
No.
Yeah, you're golden.
Yeah.
That's a great time to be alive.
I think the biggest thing, because I'm a baseball guy,
and I never really lifted heavy weights over my head.
Oh, shoulder mobility?
No, I have really good shoulder mobility.
Oh, great.
But I'm really taking my time with anything over my head.
So I think that's one good thing.
Yeah, you definitely want to do that.
Yeah, for sure.
How was your snatch at now?
That was my biggest scare was my shoulders.
Snatching?
Because I know I have good mobility,
but snatches were really scary.
When I first started, I struggled with 165 in a snatch squat.
But yeah, I'm getting up there for sure.
Are you 225 now?
So my all-time PR is 255.
I just tried 265 and, like, pretty much got it but fell over.
Yeah.
I call that, like, it'll be, like, a game time number for sure.
Oh, yeah.
If I just barely miss it, it's, like, for game time for sure.
Yeah.
Which for me is, I mean, I just need to continue.
I'm just working on efficiency and like form and stuff still.
I feel like you don't ever stop working on that though, right?
Yeah.
I'm excited to see if they do any max lifts because I know that.
That would be interesting.
I know they've been talking about like kind of taking out that element a little bit.
Like the super, super heavy stuff.
Yeah.
Like I think the 185 snatches today was like, that was like enough.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
For people to cruise and get tired.
And seven reps was high enough.
I feel like they'll definitely be at least one max though.
I mean, come on.
I would like to see it.
Yeah.
But I do know that they want to make it a little bit more like, I've heard they wanted
to make it more old school CrossFit.
Yeah.
That would be great.
Yeah.
In a way.
Because I think a lot of people can't really relate to a lot of the stuff.
It's hard to relate.
Yeah.
Like, I think it'd just be so dope if they just put, like, one benchmark in there for everybody to be like,
fuck, he did Fran in, like, 150.
You know what I mean?
Like, you know what that's like.
That's true.
That's very true.
Just, like, one classic benchmark would be rad.
Even if it was, like, Jackie, Helen, I don't know.
Fucking Murph.
Because you never know.
They've done Murph.
They've done Murph.
Yeah.
No, I agree.
I think they need to mix in a benchmark because you never know.
Like you said, when the lights turn on, you're on the big stage.
Yeah.
Come on now.
Dude, the big stage is no joke.
Yeah.
Some people are going to put like they're going to show out.
They're going to perform.
I was always a performer versus, like, in training.
I would always train really hard, but I would do stuff in competition that I never did in practice.
Or you never knew you could do.
Yeah, I snatched a long time ago.
I think it was, like, 2012 maybe in regionals or 13 or something.
Like, I snatched 265, but my PR before that was only, like, 245.
Wow.
It was a 20-pound PR.
That's a huge jump.
Yeah.
And it was from the hang.
Like, I never snatched from the hang.
Right, right.
Like, no one did.
And they were like, max hang snatch.
And everybody was like, what?
Like, we've all been doing regular snatches.
Like, you guys never said anything about a hang snatch ever, like, even on CrossFit.com.
So, I mean, everybody got stressed out.
And I remember seeing all these numbers.
I was like, oh, my God, I'm fucked.
Yeah. And then I went out there and just was like oh my god I'm fucked like yeah
and then I went out there
and just like
I hit my PR like easy
and I was like alright
let's just go for it
and I put an extra 20 pounds
on and just PR'd
it was gnarly
I hit 245
which is my PR
and I was like
they're like what do you want on
and I'm like well
20
yeah
let's go for it
let's slap them on
let's go
I was like let's go
I couldn't believe it
it was an amazing feeling
that's so cool
I remember standing up and I have a video like the crowd't believe it it was amazing feeling that's so cool i remember
standing up and i have a video like the crowd just going absolutely ape shit oh yeah that's
that's a memory you'll never forget well i'm stoked that you're getting into all this and
you have a great place to train that's awesome oh the best one of the best places to train for sure
so what's like on the horizon right now so the show is over yep like what do we do right now career-wise at the moment so you know on the
show i have that i'm you know import export manager so my dad so let me back up my family's
been in um so it's been import export over the years now it's really just mainly warehousing
and you know my dad's the ceo and it's in California. It's a cotton business. Okay.
Warehousing cotton.
And I help him out with some of that stuff.
It's awesome how he's, you know, got it all figured out now.
He runs it remotely out of the house.
And also, too.
So you can work from home.
Right.
Okay.
And that helps me out big time.
But, you know, I have, like, that's always going to be there for me, right?
Yep.
But I want to kind of do my own thing. It's a a challenge that's right and you know i don't even like chicks after
i get them i'm like oh man i love it i'm like that's why you want to go out with me that's
why you like crossfit i don't want to go out anymore i don't want to go out anymore oh man
i just wanted to see if you're gonna say yes but yeah i'm really wanting to seek entrepreneurship
so anyway that looks right now there's a lot i'm my brother's awesome i love my brother i'm really wanting to seek entrepreneurship so anyway that looks right
now there's a lot i'm my brother's awesome i love my brother i'm really close with him and
i can tell and he loves you definitely for sure so i i definitely want to do some stuff with him
like entrepreneurially together for sure i like that definitely everything i do right now is
well i have a partner in my gym and then everything else i do is solo but i would
love someone to help me out
especially someone I could trust like with money
and like bank accounts and
all these things you have to make that are like
super annoying like LLC's and
just dumb shit that you're gonna be like really I have to make
all that like just so I can talk
on this mic like it just doesn't
I'm like damn like what the hell like it's ridiculous
but there's a lot of stuff that goes in
with it it's definitely nice to have somebody who's knowledgeable on the business side,
and I think that he is, I can tell.
Yeah, my brother and my dad helped me out a lot with that.
That's dope.
Yeah, also, too, I'm in the middle of just completing a 501c3 nonprofit.
I'm trying to start a made-to-serve foundation, too.
What does that look like? I'm trying to start a made-to-serve foundation. Okay. Two. So, you know, I'm...
What does that look like?
So my brother, let me back up.
My brother just started a made-to-serve cleaning business, M-A-I-D.
And then M-A-D-E is the foundation, made-to-serve.
And the idea of starting the foundation was, oh, hey, you know, it's to make cleaning service right so we wanted to help out women or
moms that usually clean the house okay that had cancer and can no longer do the task at hand so
there's a lot of these people huh yes and we would you know the point of starting the foundation
initially was to um you know give those women free housecleaning. This is something we're in the process of doing right now and thinking about.
And I thought, man, my brother and I were putting our heads together.
Man, if you have a foundation, you're not limited to anything.
You can do whatever you want.
Totally.
So we have some good ideas with that.
Wanting to do maybe some mission trips or tons of different things.
Help out different people in need or like cancer patients or whatever.
That's kind of cool.
Yeah.
Definitely.
I never heard of that before.
Yeah.
So, yeah, I'm, I'm really big in my faith and that's just something that I feel like,
you know, is something I need to do.
Just give back.
Yeah.
That's cool.
For sure.
I wonder if you can mix fitness in with that somehow.
Yeah. I think there's always something. Get those same people in shape. Same time. Seriously. back. Yeah, that's cool. For sure. I wonder if you can mix fitness in with that somehow. Yeah, I think there's always something.
Get those same people in shape at the same time.
Seriously.
Yeah, that'd be really rad.
That would be rad.
Yeah.
I love the sound of that.
Yeah, actually, I mean, you could easily do two birds with one stone.
Most likely, if they have cancer, they're probably depressed to the point where they
don't really care about what they eat.
Probably a high-sugar diet.
Probably just don't care.
And then they're probably out of shape because they have a bad diet.
And they're sad.
You know what I mean?
I think people with harsh emotions, like hard emotions in general,
usually tend to eat pretty bad and have a bad diet.
That's true.
All that stuff just equates to lower lifestyle, quality of lifestyle.
Right, right.
For sure.
So, yeah, that could be it.
Might be doing your own thing
right now you don't even know oh man but yeah i'm excited um like i said i'm pumped i uh
talking about functional fitness again you know i think it goes so many ways like for me i'm just
excited to just champion people in their fitness journey and motivate them encourage
them to remember champion people i've never heard it that way you know like that you know too i like
i think motivation like people don't need motivation i feel like motivation is a joke
to be honest i feel like they need to be reminded why they're doing something like did you just have
a son or a daughter like are you working for them are you working to put money on the table for your family like what is your why in life and that why
if you're reminded of what that why is in your life then that is what's going to motivate you
because you're going to want that so badly and i think it's just being reminded of your why in life
and that's something that's so huge and i think people just they need motivation because they
forget their why dude and that's something i want to help people with man because i got hurt for people
bro and that's why i love functional fitness because i want people to be fit for life like
you know i know you're doing some mountaineering and stuff and like you're fit to do that because
of all the functional fitness and the crossfit training you do i don't train ever for any of
the crazy shit that i do people see me doing stuff and you're like how long it take you to
train for that i'm like dude i literally just do cross People see me doing stuff and they're like, how long did it take you to train for that? I'm like, dude, I literally just do CrossFit stuff on the reg.
And you kill it.
People are dying out there and you're mountaineering.
I'm like, dude, let's go.
I'm ready to roll.
People are turning around for sure all the time.
Yeah, for sure.
And it's fucking scary.
Yeah.
It's really windy and it's cold.
I don't even like it.
I only like it when it's over.
The whole time I'm doing it, I'm like, this is so dumb. I don't even like it. I only like it when it's over. The whole time I'm doing it, I'm like, this is so dumb.
I don't even like this.
And then I get to the top, and I'm like, fuck, nothing matters right now except for how dope this experience was.
For sure.
And I'm living right now more than anyone's ever fucking lived ever.
And I get so amped on it.
I love it.
And I get down, and I'm just like, everybody needs to feel this feeling.
And you earn getting to the top and seeing beautiful views.
That's why I talk about fit for life, functional functional fitness thing i don't want to get
too repetitive but like think about moms or anyone your family like friends like if you're a little
older and you're doing functional fitness and crossfit and you're you know your diet is you
know where it needs to be and everything i just i love it when you know moms and even even grandmas
some of these younger grandmas are able to go on a hike and get to the top and enjoy this beautiful view and be in a picture with their friends and family.
Rather than, okay, kids, you're on your own.
Dude, my mom is 61.
Actually, she's 62 yesterday.
Actually, she's 61.
Yikes.
If she hears this, I'm fucked.
It's a New Jersey 61 61 you know what i mean like a new jersey 61 and a california 61 are like two different people
like my mom thinks she's dead oh true someone in california is like yo i got 50 years left
you know what i mean so true it's such a different lifestyle actually probably georgia is probably
the same like that i'll call it an east coast 61 yeah it depends where you're at but yeah you're right totally yeah if there's not a lot of fitness going
on in that area it's different it's just a different age and like i would do anything
dude to take my mom on a fucking hike yeah and take the same photo together up there yeah get
a photo up at the top and i have so many friends here in california where they could do that with
that's like not even an issue yeah and my mom's like there's no way i'm doing that i could never walk that far yeah i'm with you or like this or that i'm just
like man that just like sucks like i really wish that we could change that somehow for sure and
it's ridiculous and i think that for me i get all these dms all these messages from people all the
time and they are asking me for motivation and i'm literally like dude motivation is fucked like
motivation is the magic pill everybody wants that's what that's, dude, motivation is fucked. Motivation is the magic pill everybody wants.
That's what I think motivation is.
And I think that you're saying as a why, listening to this podcast right now,
I think that's probably one of the best things anyone's ever said, bar none.
That motivation doesn't exist and it's more of a why.
Because a why will actually give you longevity in whatever it is that you're doing.
Where does your hunger come from?
Why are you doing what you're doing?
I've had super fat guys come into my gym and they're like,
I'm here because I don't want to look like shit for my daughter's wedding.
I want to be in the photos.
I want to look good.
It's a solid why.
Yeah.
And these guys lose like 40, 50 pounds.
They look insane.
The wedding's over and they're like, I'm going to keep going.
For sure.
But if it's like, dude, I fucking am fat and I just need to lose weight.
The doctor told me I need to lose weight or whatever.
It's like, where's your motivation at?
Like, unless you like working out after a few weeks,
you're probably just like, you come in and you just like check in.
It's like a desk job.
You're just like, fuck, I'm here.
I'm here.
Exactly.
And too many people are there and they're not doing enough.
That's what 24-hour fitness is.
You're just there.
Yeah.
Goals is like, you're just there.
And that's tough too because then it's so easy for bad habits, creeping, laziness.
And that's why I love the CrossFit community because of accountability.
Yeah, you go on a 24-hour fitness for Gold's Gym.
There's people who crush for sure.
Right, yeah.
And there's tons of people that are holding each other accountable and getting after it and training hard.
And they're not doing CrossFit.
So I'm not hating on that community.
But I would argue that it came from somewhere first.
They played baseball.
They played football.
The people who are really killing it in there, they had some sort of camaraderie first.
Right.
And they just carried it over.
But it's really rare for someone to just be solo, never worked out before, and then they go in there and start crushing it.
It can be anything.
It's very rare.
Yeah.
Intramurals.
It can be anything.
I love seeing people in the gym that are, like, I talked about accountability earlier.
I love that.
Like, a friend, even two girls in there, like, getting after it together.
Yeah, I don't care.
Yeah.
People always are like, people come to my gym, like, they're from out of town.
They're like, oh, my God.
Like, you want to work out?
And I'm like, yeah, let's go.
And they're just like, you sure that you don't care?
I'm like, dude, as long as in my peripheral vision someone is getting after it,
that's all I care about.
I don't care if I finish 10 minutes before you.
I just want you to be dying.
Don't tell me the workout sucks.
Don't say anything about the workout.
Just do the fucking workout.
We can change the weights back and forth.
Yeah, I don't care.
Let's do this.
Don't tell me you're tired.
I don't want to hear anything negative.
Just do it.
Yeah.
If you have something negative to say, keep it inside.
If you want to change the weight, don't ask me.
Just change it.
And then when it's over, we'll hug it out and it'll be dope. If you have something negative to say, keep it inside. If you want to change the weight, don't ask me. Just change it.
And then when it's over, we'll hug it out and it'll be dope.
I just don't want to hear anything like during.
I'm all about it.
That's solid.
That's solid. For sure.
Oh, I love that.
Well, is there anything else you want to share with everybody?
Because everyone thinks that you're kind of a dick.
If they watch the show.
Oh, man.
And obviously you're not.
And you're doing all these really great things
for people uh i don't even know where to begin um i feel like we touched on a lot yeah we did
yeah i just i want people to just see what i do i want to encourage them to follow me
and just see who i am what i stand for and. And I do, regardless of what anyone says, I do have a heart for people.
And I know I just said motivation is crap, but I want to motivate people
because I want to remind people of what their why is in life.
You want to remind people and not motivate.
Yeah, that's right.
And I think that's so big.
Again, not to get repetitive, but I just –
People love repetitive, bro. You keep saying the same thing not to get repetitive, but I just.
People love repetitive, bro.
You keep saying the same thing and it hammers in.
I know.
That's true.
I just want people to feel better.
One about themselves and just feel better in life, you know, whether it's through, whether it's just a one little diet tweak or just consistency of going out for a jog or getting in the gym a couple times a week,
the consistency.
Like some people look at us like we're freaks or meatheads, right?
Some of us, right?
And no, it's just like we enjoy feeling better because we've reaped the benefit,
and it's addicting.
Yeah.
And I love the chemical. Dude, I have to work out.
There's no point in talking to me.
Yeah.
Like when you guys saw me earlier, Julia, like,
are you jumping in a pool or something?
I was like, no, I just worked out right now.
Like right now?
I was like, right now.
I love it.
I needed it.
I worked out last night
at 11 o'clock at night.
I didn't give a fuck.
For sure.
In the hotel gym,
in the Hilton,
got a set of dumbbells
and just got after it.
That's my kind of thing.
I love that.
You ever done a devil press before?
Yes.
Those are intense.
I literally just,
dude, cold.
Grabbed a set of 50s,
did 100.
No joke.
That's intense.
Yeah, at 11 o'clock at night that
sounded like me on the bachelorette i had nothing like a few times we got to go in you know a little
hotel fitness room and there's a set of dumbbells and i'm like well here we go devil press i just
learned that before i got on the show i'm like well that's what i'm gonna do whenever i see
you know dumbbells when you have a set of dumbbells and it's all you have and you're
like i need to get a good workout in like what's the best bang for my buck? Double press.
For those of you who don't know what a double press is,
for some reason, it's basically a double
dumbbell burpee ground to overhead.
Yep. Well said.
I wish they just called it a dumbbell ground to overhead,
but they don't.
It's actually fun to do it with one also.
So you do a burpee with one, come up,
and then you kind of snatch it, like a hang snatch.
Do you alternate?
I'll just do 50 on one side, and then I'll go 50 on the other.
That's intense.
I've never even thought about that.
Yeah, it's cool.
Wow.
With the burpees, huh?
Yeah, big fan of those.
That sounds spicy.
And it's actually fun with a kettlebell.
You can do it with a kettlebell, too.
It's super fun.
Wow.
Those are one of my favorite workouts to do.
Because sometimes you don't have, like, two of everything in some of these gyms.
You just get, like, it's weird.
It's just, like, one heavy dumbbell, and I'll just grab the heaviest one and just get after it.
I'm all about it.
Yeah.
I have a kettlebell in my room, in the back of my car, in my garage.
I have them everywhere.
Yeah.
Like, literally, and I'm just, like, I'm getting after it.
I need it.
I love just getting, like, whenever you know you need something, and it's, like, you don't,
either whether it's time or availability.
Like, even before I came to the games, you i'm i woke up early to finish packing and then
before i went to the airport i was like man i really want to do something i don't have time
to go for a long run or whatever 100 burpees just did um what was it was 50 burpees 150 air squats
50 burpees and i was like screw it i'm doing it right here in my garage like let's just knock
this out shower and leave i leave. I love it.
Dude, I do 100 burpees all the time.
Yeah, all the time.
100 burpees per time.
100 air squats per time.
I'll be at the beach just feeling bad for myself.
I'm not doing shit right now.
I'm just sitting on the beach.
100 burpees.
Boom.
In the sand.
People are like, this guy's out of his mind.
I'm like, I am.
Let's go.
I love it.
I love it.
For me, it's an energy boost.
Every single time I do it. I feel so good after.
Yeah, it's a cup of coffee.
Seriously.
Yeah, a cup of coffee workout. Get those endorphins flowing. I feel great. I'm getting excited every single time I do it. I feel so good after. Yeah, it's a cup of coffee. Seriously. Yeah, a cup of coffee workout.
Get those endorphins flowing.
Yep, I feel great.
I'm getting excited right now just thinking about it.
Yeah, I almost want to do 100 rupees right now for time.
I'm down.
Put the headset on.
So are you here all weekend at the games?
Yeah, I'm not leaving until Monday afternoon.
Okay.
So I'm excited to see how it all ends out, man.
And go to the after party.
Yes.
Yes?
Yeah.
No doubt.
All right.
So where can everybody find you right now?
On Instagram.
What is the tag?
Yeah, IG.
