Today's episode is a little different friends. We recorded a live episode of what it looks like, what it feels like, what it sounds like when the strongest youth team in the country at MASH Elite Performance is at Max Out Friday. So the goal of the day was to build to a 1RM snatch and a 1RM clean and jerk. There's no time limit, but MASH has a couple world champions in the gym. We got Morgan to build up to about 7 pounds,
Starting point is 00:01:31 less than the world record right now for his weight class, which is really awesome because he's only 17 years old. Ryan Grimsland set a PR in his clean and jerk. Kendall, she hit a 209-pound snatch. That's Kendall Hudson. It was just an awesome day, and we thought it would be really cool to do, like, a live show talking about what it means to PR, how to build, like, a max out Friday, the culture of strength in your gym, having, like, a real weightlifting team and what that feels like, how practice is set up.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Just a lot of cool things that MASH has going on at this gym. Having like the most elite youth team in the country right now. It's a little different. There's going to be parts that feel a little weird just because we were being very quiet because people are clean jerking over 400 pounds right in front of us and we don't want to be annoying to them. But for the most part, it's really good weightlifting talk and a lot of coaching on building up to maxes, what to think about when you're building up to maxes.

I feel like if you're not in the weightlifting world, you wouldn't care. But if you are, we are at the center of the strongest. Do you think there's another place in the country right now that has this many great youth lifters? Nope.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Or just lifters in general? Nope. In one place. And we're at Max Out Friday, which is exactly what it sounds like. We are going to snatch for a 1RM. We're going to clean the jerk for a 1RM. And we have a really good potential over the next hour and a half here of seeing a world record go. You might see a world record. Maybe so.
Starting point is 00:03:25 It'll be really exciting. I give Morgan and Ryan financial incentives. That's what Morgan would be needing. What'd you tell them? 100 bucks per PR. 100 bucks.

Starting point is 00:03:55 Okay, so wait. So for Morgan, what's his best and what's he trying to hit today and what's the world record? 140 snatch, 191 clean and jerk. So to... I don't know his best PR. What is his best total, I mean? His best total that he's ever hit, I think, is 325 or – Yeah, 325.
Starting point is 00:04:14 He's hit 328 in one weekend, but not in one sitting. 40 – he did 40 in 88 with your boy – Oh, yeah, 328. My bad. 40 in 88 with Mikey Cohen one Friday. His mom is trying to, like, shoot it low so she can get the other bucks. Smart woman. She's taking 20 off the top.
Starting point is 00:04:28 It comes to my PayPal, and then I have to send it to him. There's got to be a transaction fee. You take a cut, for sure. I'm an advantage. How long have you guys been doing Max Out Friday here? Years. Okay, so since. How about a little history of Max Out Friday?
Starting point is 00:04:44 I think Max Out Friday probably originated from Cal Strength, from the days when Glenn Penlay was there. They still, I think Cal Strength still goes heavy on Fridays, but they don't do like a true Max Every Day. Sometimes they do, but they call it Big Friday now because they don't necessarily max out. So, like, I think now we're the only ones who continue to do a true max out. Yeah, you max out Friday?
Starting point is 00:05:07 Every Friday? Well, it could be a max triple. It could be a max complex. So it is maximum effort. This is where we use the conjugate. Or what Louis Simmons, you know, max effort. Or Bulgarian. It's not Louis Simmons.
Starting point is 00:05:22 I guess Bulgaria coined the max effort. So it's a different variation every Friday. Right. Yeah. And then when we're this close to competing, it's max snatch, clean and jerk. That's where I differ. In weightlifting, you can't be so conjugate. You have to have a little bit of like, that's what I'm looking for.
Starting point is 00:05:43 It has to be the said principle. It has to be Specific adaptation those demands look at that look at you go So you want it wants best specificity leading up to competition? Yeah, six weeks out. Yeah, it's that's danger. That's it Friday, okay, five people that are competing within the next three weeks. Three of them are going to the AO final, and two of them in the room are going to Argentina to compete. For Team USA? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:13 So we've got – Cool. Who have we got in the room? So we've got Tim Olips. He's from Kentucky. He's going to Argentina. Okay. We work with him online.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Like I said, he's from Kentucky. They have a great group. It's CrossFit Rugrats. Now Rugrats Barbell, but they are doing really well. Yeah. They're on our national team, though. So when we compete nationally, they compete with us. So they're a big part of our team.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Okay. And how old is he in roughly what he's left? He's the youngest. He's 15. 15. I want to say his best are somewhere roughly like 112, 145. He and I just talked, and he said he has some goals of like 115, 150 today. Okay.
Starting point is 00:06:52 And who else we got? So we have Morgan, obviously, McCullough, her son, who is like the – him and Ryan are the top two youth in the country in the male division. Ryan's about to age out, which will leave, obviously, Morgan at number one. Right. Both of them are Team USA multiple times, Team USA between Ryan Grimsley and Morgan. Morgan's broken several American records, 13 youth, 14, 15, and now 16, 17.
Starting point is 00:07:19 They've both broken several Pan American records. So it just so happens that Ryan is kind of in that group where the records still reflect CJ Cummings. So it's kind of a brutal weight class. Right, right. Then we have Isaac, who is all the way from New Zealand. He's over here staying with us for two months. He's Team New Zealand.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Yeah, we like watching Isaac. How long is he here for? I like watching past people. Three months, actually. Three months. Three months. He's Team New Zealand. Yeah. Starting point is 00:07:50 We have Hannah Dunn, who's our 16-year-old female lifter that is going to Argentina in December. Wait, which one is she? She's back here on the left-hand side in the MASH halter top. Yeah. Gotcha. She is probably my most improved of late athlete. Yeah, yeah. She's, like, set a million PRs in the last two weeks. Starting point is 00:08:09 Yeah. Yeah. Sarah, who is, she's one of our top weightlifters in the national ranks, but she and Chris are both our top two powerlifters now. Mm-hmm. So, Sarah's an amazing weightlifter, and then there's Karina, who is Tim's sister and Tim's coach, day-to-day coach who's lifting, who's also a really good lifter. So in this room right now, there's like one.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Oh, I forgot. We have Kendall Hudson. Kendall Hudson, who is our newest athlete. Yeah. So she's killing it, total 200 already, and she's only been doing weightlifting for six months. Where'd she come from? CrossFit world? She came from CrossFit, yeah. She's in a already, and she's only been doing weightlifting for six months. Where'd she come from? CrossFit world?
Starting point is 00:08:46 CrossFit, yeah. She's in a tough weight class. She's in a 71 weight class with Kate and I, so it's a battle. But she's got the best second pool in the game. Yeah, and then there's Jackie Bigger. Now Jackie is to me own, but she's been on my team a long time. She's an athlete that very well could have already been Team USA, but just things have happened and it didn't work out.
Starting point is 00:09:11 But if she makes it back, she's definitely one of the top females in the game. So I just got to hopefully help her continue to climb, and I think that's about it. She does a bunch of coaching with you as well, right? We got to shout out Matt Weininger. He's probably Travis' oldest athlete. He's 19 now, but he's been with Travis since he was 11 years old. Wow.
Starting point is 00:09:31 He is actually younger. It's been a decade. He was nine. Okay. It's been a decade. Yeah. Well, most people that are in this room right now have been maxing out for, this isn't their first rodeo of hitting as much weight as they possibly can put on the bar for the day. But as people go into a day like this, if a gym owner or athletes want to start putting
Starting point is 00:09:56 a max out Friday, something consistent in their, ooh, that was snappy. Something consistent in their programming where they are maxing out. What do you do for programming leading up to a max out Friday, knowing that it's coming, or just the mentality of do you like having every Friday you have to show up and we've got a big day you have to be here for? Well, here's the way I schedule it now. Mondays are our highest volume day. Tuesday is normally accessory work. Wednesday is our lower volume day.
Starting point is 00:10:31 And then Thursday is our lowest volume day, leading to Friday being our high-intensity low volume. So once again, Monday high volume, Wednesday medium, Friday low but high intensity. That's the way it works. And Saturdays are usually squats and pulls and accessories. So they do those usually on day six. Gotcha.
Starting point is 00:10:52 Strength day is Saturday. So do you have anybody on your team right now that is competing at the same weight class? Does Isaac and Morgan look about the same? They're not. They're not, right? No, Isaac is an 89. Yeah, he's got to be smaller than Morgan. Yeah, Morgan is a 96.
Starting point is 00:11:07 Are they going to grow into the same weight class? Because they're both big-ass human beings. Yeah. They're both children. Why is Isaac so fast? Isaac's at – is Isaac 19 or 20? Maybe 19 or 20. He's older than Morgan.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Oh, so he's older. Gotcha. So he's probably at the height level he's going to be at. Yeah, he is. Yeah, Morgan's still got a couple of natural puberty growth spurts to go. And Morgan's not the tallest dude in the room today. Tim. Yeah, dude, this kid is super freaky fast and strong.
Starting point is 00:11:38 And Tim is an 81. Yeah, if I walk by that kid in the airport, there's no way I think he would snatch more than me, and he embarrassed me yesterday. Wow, look at Jaggy like the Jackie of old. Yeah. What are the girls going to, like, who, if you were to put money in a chalk bucket for them today,
Starting point is 00:11:56 what would be the, what are the numbers that we need to see out of the girls? Well, the battle is going to be between Sarah and Kendall. They're pretty close. Kendall is going to be – both of them will be over 90 kilos in the stands. Yes, she said she's going 95 today. She already said it. She said it on my Instagram. She's looking at –
Starting point is 00:12:15 Oh, Kendall? Yeah. Yeah. If she is 95, it will be tough for Sarah because Sarah doesn't do a lot of weightlifting anymore. It's mainly powerlifting. Well, she cleaned 264 the other day. What did she clean? It was 120? Sarah is just super weightlifting anymore. It's mainly powerlifting. Well, she cleaned 264 the other day. She cleaned what?
Starting point is 00:12:25 It was 120? Sarah is just super athletic. She's strong. Strong as an ox. She's probably the most pure strength athlete of the girls. Yeah, that was power. That was really good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:37 Yeah, you said there's not a single girl in the country that you think could beat her at the one-time challenge. I don't. No. You know, maybe a bigger girl, but anyone even close to her weight, I would say no. Just because she's so strong at squat, bench, deadlift, snatch, clean, jerk. She doesn't have a weak spot. Yeah. Well, I saw her just pull 400 off the floor, or squat 400.
Starting point is 00:13:00 What's her deadlift? 451. God. Let's watch this kid. It's way too fast. Thank you. Go. Let's watch this, kids. Way too fast. Bam. Yeah. That's 100, right?
Starting point is 00:13:10 Yep. Hold on. I'll be back. Okay. I feel like we're going to get him to, like, 120 today. Yeah. If he hit 120 for a triple on the snatch balance the other day, I feel like we'll be able to see 120 come up.
Starting point is 00:13:23 What does he weigh? Do you know? I think that he walks around around 83, but he's in the 81-kilo weight class. He's 15 years old. We're going to need, like, a numbers person to do these in pounds for all the people listening right now. Oh, you got it. It's like a pure weightlifting conversation we're having right here.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Right now, Tim is putting 115 on the bar, which is 253 pounds. Yo, tell me what goes on when like one thing i love coming here and watching is the difference between like a crossfitter going from the second to third pole it looks like one big movement where we're in here all the lifters are slowing the movement down so much that like that third pole is so obvious that it's a separate piece. What drills and, I guess, coaching do you put into programs and stuff to really practice that? Because it's not a natural thing for most athletes to have. To get faster at the third pole, some of the things that we might do is go from the power position because you have no choice but to get under the bar fast.
Starting point is 00:14:22 Or from blocks at a higher position. That's probably two of our best. But the third pull is probably the deciding factor between a good weightlifter and a great weightlifter. Yep, that's why I'm good. You got Jackie going 69. Yeah, this is – Yo, I was watching her do snatch balances yesterday.
Starting point is 00:14:38 Her back and her overhead position, like her shoulder blade fits into her back way better than mine does. It was just freaking shredded strong. I remember the first time watching her. I was with Muscle Driver when we saw Jackie. And I saw her out of the corner of my eye, much like Morgan, and the way she moved. Number one, she's got a huge butt. I'm just calling it like it is, which is a very good sign of a good weightlifter.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Yeah, you need it. And, you know, she just looks like an athlete. Like everything about Jackie says I'm a great athlete. Yeah. I'm probably better than you, you know. And so then I was like, I went back and told Don, I was like, man, you need to check out this girl, which she did, and then we recruited her.
Starting point is 00:15:24 How much of her training? Oh, we got 95 today. Kilo just took, I mean, Kendall just took 75 kilos. That was 75. I thought it was 85. Whoa, no, that's 85. 40? 75.
Starting point is 00:15:36 75. It's a women's bar. Yep. How much of their programming is the same, and how much of it is varied based on they're working on their own specific weaknesses, et cetera. Okay. So, like, the closer you get to a meet because of specificity, it's very similar. The further out, the more different it gets.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Yeah. Right. But still, there's differences. Like, there might be exercises they do before they lift that are, like, set, they're designed to, like, defeat certain flaws that they have. Like, for example, like let's say that somebody is like not standing with the bar long. So they might do a pull, pause at the hips into a snatch before they start snatching regular to like start to dial in
Starting point is 00:16:20 that standing with the bar using your legs. So those would be some of the differences. But other than that, it's like this close to a meet is very similar. And since you guys are here, even like Matt should be different, but we're going to let him go since you guys are here. I appreciate that. When in doubt, max out. You need those t-shirts, man.
Starting point is 00:16:41 I want you all to know she cannot steal that from me. That is my thing. I kind of feel like that. I'm just piggybacking off of it.-shirts, man. Starting point is 00:17:33 he's done reach up yeah the reason i wanted to talk about him is because he just missed that and um his legs go up to about my throat so um what and yesterday we were talking about him she looks so good yeah um when we when when we were when i was training with him yesterday when yeah i was training with him because he crushed me. You know, his legs and he gets – it's really tough. Oh, smoke. Yeah, that was – So, so good. Yeah. It's hard for him to get his knees out of the way.
Starting point is 00:18:13 Yeah. Because he's got such long legs. How do you guys teach that patience and, like, just taking stuff off the floor for him? I mean – That's why he's got that wide stance where he pushes his knees out super far. Yeah. It's really tough to lift when you're that tall. You know, a lot of lifters, especially when they have longer femurs,
Starting point is 00:18:30 sometimes if you have them turn their toes slightly out, it changes that shin angle so it's a little bit easier to bring the bar back. Come on, girl. There you go. Yeah. Yeah, the more you toe out, the more you push your knees out, your knees also travel back at the same time, so they don't get in the way of the bar in the same way.
Starting point is 00:18:48 Yeah, have you guys seen this many? I mean, we've never had this many lifters come to you guys, I would imagine, as you've had in the last five years. But the idea of what a lifter needs to look like in order to be strong probably has changed a lot, too. Like, you're no longer discrediting that tall, lanky kid when he walks in. You go, okay, cool, let's make this person strong. There's no reason we can't.
Starting point is 00:19:10 We have, he's what, 6'2", 6'3"? He's at least 6'2". What weight class is he in? 81. He's only 178 pounds. Wow. I mean, that's a tall, skinny kid. But we have to put weight on him.
Starting point is 00:19:24 That's what I know. We're going to find 4,000 calories a day. Yeah. Up that 500 a week until he's 205 pounds. Here goes Dylan taking 110, which is 242. 110 is a good number. How long has he been working for you guys? He's got plenty of pull on there.
Starting point is 00:19:40 This is the semester. He's got to stick that. Oh, Lance, yeah. We forgot to mention Lance over here in the corner. He kind of started early with his snatches and stuff. What's he most famous for? To being Sarah Davey's boyfriend. That's right.

Starting point is 00:20:19 This kid, or the kid last night, Isaac from New Zealand last night, cracked me up. We were like, dude, how did you get into weightlifting? It was, well, my parents opened a CrossFit gym, and then I basically lived in it. Oh, yeah. That's our story. There's a lot of kids growing up right now. Here's Morgan taking 120, 264.
Starting point is 00:20:41 Yeah, looking sharp today. Looking fodder. Yeah. I love sub-max weights with high-caliber lifters. It makes just something you know is heavy look effortless. It's awesome. So, so far we've just had Ryan and Morgan do just that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:57 What's Ryan going to hit today? Is he going to hit 135, 140? No, I mean, I would love 30. 30. But, like, hopefully 27 at least. Yeah. Oh, that was smooth right there. Yeah.

How the hell are you not playing rugby? And he was like, well, my mom and dad opened a CrossFit gym. We're like, oh, so then you became a CrossFitter. There you go.

I think a lot of times, especially with snatch, it's one of those things, like, you know, every time you take the lift, it's not, it's not, you know, for your strength, it's not really close to your absolute strength, but, you know, it's fatiguing, it taxes your CNS, and, you know, just like for a CrossFit athlete, when they get frustrated with double
Starting point is 00:48:00 unders, it's really hard to focus and be able to hit them consistently, so, you know, once you get to a point where you're fatigued and you're also frustrated, the snatch is probably not going to happen. So you're just going to have to, you know. And then the more times you try it, it can make your – What do we got here on the bar with him? This is 127. This would be a one-kilo PR.
Starting point is 00:48:18 So that last one was not a PR with him, the 125? The 125 was actually one kilo less. See, I feel like that's a great example, right? Like, he missed the 130 pretty bad. And then that one just, the timing is just so off. Yeah. Like, it's just time. I mean, he's moving on right now.
Starting point is 00:48:37 But it was just, like, a good example of exactly what we were talking about. Of, like, that one extra lift, there's no chance because the timing just gets so bad with whatever you miss one or two times. And it's such a rhythm thing. Yeah, and I think it has a lot to do with, you know, athletes who, you know, that you have to approach the bar the same thing for a 70-kilo lift or like a light lift versus a maximum. A lot of times, like for him, if you watched him build up,
Starting point is 00:49:01 once he got really close to his max, he started, like, trying to sneak under the bar. He wasn't trusting his legs. And you got to approach it the same way. Here she goes. Here we go. Last one. I think you're right, Anders. I think you're right.

Yeah, we will open above 130. We opened at the AO3 at 125, and we ended up at 131 because he missed his opener. Just a weird miss. Yeah. So we're going to open up between 128 and 130 if we can on this one,
Starting point is 00:50:57 which he's been a lot more consistent with 130. Yeah. And 135, actually. And you'll see Morgan works up pretty fast on his clean and jerks. When you look at Ryan, you're like, oh, that's a nice kid. Maybe he'll grow. And he's the strongest kid in the country. And he'll sneak up on you too. It's not very imposing.
Starting point is 00:59:56 And then you watch him move, you're just like, whoa. He just won, of course, Morgan with a two. But, like, he won youth Pan Ams this year. Morgan won last year. It's the third pull and how distinct it is from the second. You can really see them pull under the bar. And then the overhead position and the jerk.
Starting point is 01:00:35 It is so strong. It is my favorite accomplishment as a coach because his jerk used to be shoddy. If you look at the video, I posted a video of all his best accomplishments. His jerk used to be shoddy when he was 12. No, it was no. No, that's not true. No.
Starting point is 01:00:52 When I was coaching him alone. He was 13. It was like, it was, yeah. Don't lie, he was 15 the whole time. He had a good snatch, a really good clean. Yeah. Like, he came with a good clean. I won't take credit for that.

I want him to do it right because a jerk done incorrectly is, like, the most dangerous thing you can do because, you know, like, I mean, I'm not going to name names, but there's lifters out there who I would attribute the ending of their career because they jerked incorrectly. Like a turning of the foot, you know. Your knee is not supposed to rotate, you know.

Starting point is 01:22:51 See, earlier somebody asked me, I made a comment like that, that we're not going to do similar jumps. Other coaches, all they care about is six for six. And that might be true, but, like, come the American Open, especially with Ryan, like, that's not necessarily the goal. The goal is 291, however we have to do it. Yeah. And if he goes two for six and it's 291, that's a win.
Starting point is 01:23:13 Yeah, well, and he's safe on the junior world list. So it's not as if, you know, somebody's going to knock him off. So you can make some. Make some ballsy jumps. Yeah. Which is what we'll do. And, like, with Morgan, he's on the world list and he's safe on it. But we're trying to increase his ranking on it.
