Starting point is 00:00:00 What's up everybody welcome back to another episode of active life radio on the shrugged collective network I'm Dr. Sean Pastuch I'm your host and today I'm gonna help you understand just how significant that little trivial ache and pain that you're having really is so that you understand that you have the power and need to use it to get yourself out of pain. This is something that we do with our clients from time to time when we feel like they're in need of a little kick in the old keister. And we're going to help you with it today and see if it's helpful for you to start making the moves necessary to get yourself out of pain because you do have the power. You just need to tap into it. Before we get to that, as always, I want to thank our sponsors at Organifi. That's O-R-G-A-N-I-F-I dot com. These guys are making high quality, high quality,
Starting point is 00:01:10 drinkable supplements that taste great, have huge nutritional value, and are easy to use. There's no five-step process involved. If you're thinking to yourself, I would really like a little bit more peace of mind. I want to make sure that I'm getting enough greens in my diet. I want to make sure that I'm having something daily that reduces the amount of inflammation that I have in my diet.
Starting point is 00:01:40 Get yourself some Organifi. Remember, if you use the code SHRUGGED at checkout on Organifi.com, you're going to save 20%. I'm less worried about you doing that and buying it, even though that's what they're telling me. That's what the job is for me. If I'm talking about a sponsor, obviously the sponsor wants me to drive people to their page to go and buy the product. The truth is, not everybody should do that. If you feel like you already have a great, nutritious, well-rounded diet and you're not in the mode to create a new habit, you don't need to go and do this. But if you're somebody
Starting point is 00:02:20 who is looking for a healthy habit, who is looking for another way to create peace of mind through high quality nutrition. If you deal with inflammation on a day-to-day basis, and maybe you just have a little bit of underlying inflammation that causes low level joint pain. For example, get some, get some, try it for a month, try it for six weeks and see if the way that you feel day to day improves. When I tell you to go to a site and use the code shrug to check out for 20% off. I want to be clear. This is how anything that we talk about. I want you to think of it as a short-term trial. You're not creating a new habit for the rest of your life unless if you deem this habit valuable.
Starting point is 00:03:18 And it is going to be a habit. Let's be real. Because we're not going to buy it and then use it every once in a while. You're going to buy it and it use it every once in a while. You're going to buy it and it's going to be a daily thing. So Organifi.com, O-R-G-A-N-I-F-I.com. Use the code SHRUGGED at checkout.
Starting point is 00:03:35 See what it's all about. Like I said, I love the gold drink at bedtime. I like the green drink in the morning. Every once in a while, I mix the red one in, but I'm really more about the gold to soothe me at bed and the green to kind of give me some of that morning blanket of micronutrients from the greens that I'm not necessarily going to eat every day. It's hard in the winter. All right, let's get to today's show. On today's show, I want to walk you guys the only way that you can continue to tolerate it, or it's something that you've just resigned to the fact that you're not going to be able to
Starting point is 00:04:31 improve it. You know, this, it sucks, but it is what it is. I've had this forever. If you've ever said that or felt it, this is especially for you. If you're somebody out there who is working out around it, whatever it is, this episode is especially for you. If you're not one of those people, I ask you, take this experiment or take this exercise and apply it to anything else in your life. If you have somebody who you know who is one of these people, make sure they listen to this episode. Is that a deal? Good. All right, here we go. What I want you to do is this. I want you to choose one ailment okay one ailment so maybe it's that long-standing nagging shoulder pain maybe it's some annoying knee pain it could be that it's your low back hurts when you lift something heavy. Whatever.
Starting point is 00:05:50 I want you to write down that thing. Write it down as an I statement. So what I mean by that is, for example, if you have low back pain when you lift things up off the ground, I want you to write, I have low back pain when I pick things up from the ground. Just like that. I have low back pain when I pick things up from the ground. If it's your knee issue, I have knee pain when I stand up from a seated position that I've been in for a long time. Just write it just like that as if it's an admission of reality. Do you write that down? For those of you who don't have aches and pains and are still with us, thank you. What you can do is think of this and everything going forward.
Starting point is 00:06:36 I'm not going to do it as a, you know, translation anymore after this one, but let's say you don't have enough money. You can write down. I need to make more money. That's it. Now, everything after this is going to be exactly the same, right? You'll be able to change what you're writing based on your situation.
Starting point is 00:06:59 You'll understand. The next thing I want you to write down is all of the things that your ailment is holding you back from being able to do. So I have low back pain when I pick things up from the ground, top of the page, underneath that bullet points. I struggle to play with my kids. I struggle to load groceries into the refrigerator. I have pain getting in and out of a car. I have to scale whenever there's a workout in the gym that includes pulling from the ground. I have to avoid running because running causes me low back pain too. For example, I want you to make a list of as many of those things as you have. If you're listening to this in a situation where you can do it now, pause this and do it now. If you're listening to this in a situation where you can do it now, pause this and do it now. If you're listening to this in a situation where you're going to have to come back to it, that's fine.
Starting point is 00:08:09 We're at the eight minute mark. So come back here and do it later. Exercise number three, after you've written down, I have this problem. I'm unable to, or I struggled to, or I have to avoid doing the following things because of this problem as bullet points. The next thing I want you to do is next to each of the bullet points that you made, I want you to write down how it makes you feel in the moment that that happens. So for example, now you'd have at the top, I have low back pain when I pull things off the ground. I struggle to play with my kids. It makes me feel like I could be a better father. Write it like that now. So you have at the top of the sheet, you have, I have low back pain when I lift things off the ground.
Starting point is 00:09:08 Underneath that is your bullet point. I struggle to play with my kids, which makes me feel like I could be a better father. Write that down. Write that down for each of them. So we also talked about, I need to scale every time I go to the gym or pulling from the ground, which makes me feel like I'm missing out on fitness,
Starting point is 00:09:33 which makes me feel like a burden on coach every time I come to the gym because I have to ask how to modify again. So now you have, what is your ailment? What are all of the things that that ailment is inhibiting you from doing in your life or making more difficult in your life? And how does it feel when those difficult things come up? Okay. Now, I want you to go next to all of those feelings and i want you to write on a scale of zero or one to ten you're not allowed to use seven on a scale of one 10, you are not allowed to use 7.
Starting point is 00:10:33 How important to you is it that that problem goes away? So let's go back to the first one. What you're now going to be able to read is, I have low back pain when I pull things off of the ground. I struggle to play with my kids, which makes me feel like I could be a better father. I rate that a nine out of 10 as a priority for me to fix. 10 being the most important thing in the world. Okay. I don't want you to think, let me, let me rephrase that. I want you to be writing these numbers up in a vacuum. What I mean by that is I want you to eliminate consideration as to the reality that this is
Starting point is 00:11:27 possible when you come up with your answers. So I don't want you to rate something that would be a nine out of 10, a one out of 10, because you believe it is impossible for you to be able to do that. I want you to rate it a nine out of 10, even if you believe it's impossible to do. Okay, so now you have the problem, the ailment. You have the things that that ailment causes you to have to change in your life. You have the way that making those changes makes you feel. And you have the rating for how important it is that you change each of those things.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Here's the last thing, well, second to last thing I want you to do. I want you to write up next to each element, what are all of the things that you could do to alleviate it permanently? So what are all of the things that you think you could do to alleviate this permanently. When you do this list, I want you to take out any consideration about money, time, or access. I just want you to make the list. So you're writing a list right now for having back pain that comes on anytime you reach from the ground, which makes you struggle to play with your kids, which makes you feel like you could probably be a better father, which is a nine out of 10 priority to fix. What are all the things that you could do to eliminate that back pain?
Starting point is 00:13:26 Could you change your career? I'm not saying you should. I'm just saying, is it one of the things you could do? Could you change your career? Could you change your commute? Could you become more active? Could you train less and recover better? Could you drink more water? Could you improve less and recover better? Could you drink more water?
Starting point is 00:13:48 Could you improve your diet? Could you finally go see that doctor who doesn't take your insurance? Could you work with an active life coach one-on-one? Could you walk up to one of the coaches in your gym and ask them for one-on-one coaching to help with the problem? You can if they're an emerging coach. Right? All the things that you to do is I want you to determine which of those things that you might be able to do are most likely to work.
Starting point is 00:14:47 And I want you to do it. I want you to do it. If you wrote, if any of the things that you felt need to change as a priority higher than a seven, meaning eight, nine, ten, you have to put aside to change is a priority higher than a seven, meaning eight, nine, 10.
Starting point is 00:15:14 You have to put aside your feelings about whether or not change can actually happen. You have to put those aside because it's an eight, nine, or 10 priority that you figure it out. And for every time that you say the word impossible, that's impossible. That can't be done. For every time that you say something like that, all you're doing is fooling yourself. All you're doing is fooling yourself. It's not true. You know, it's not true. The reason why you do it is because it makes you feel better about giving up on the pursuit of being better. When you can convince yourself that it's impossible because now you're not lazy. It's just impossible. Why would you do that? You're not lazy. You don't need to feel bad about that. It's not your fault. That's what it does. But I have a harsh reality for you. It is your fault.
Starting point is 00:16:21 There is something you can do about it. You're just prioritizing other things over that. So if you want to do a little bonus activity, I want you to take your credit card statement for the last two months. And I want you to list all of the things that are choices, objective choices. I'm not talking about, you know, paying your utility bill at your house. It's not a choice. You have to have heat. You have to have electricity. It's 2019. It'll be 2020 maybe when you listen to this. I don't know when you're going to listen to this, but I want you to take off all of the activities.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Did you go out to dinner? What does your car cost you each month? How much is gas? What about your car insurance? Could you have a less expensive car? I'm not telling you to. I'm just asking, is this an option? How many times did you order in? How many times did you go out to dinner? What does your gym cost? How many times did you go shopping for new clothes? you know whatever it is i want you to ask yourself rate them on a scale of one to ten how high of a priority is it that those things happened what you'll probably find is that you have enough money to do the things that you prioritize eight, nine, or ten if you eliminate the things that you prioritize at two, three, four, five, six. You just don't want to.
Starting point is 00:18:18 You don't have the certainty that if you do these things, they're going to work, and it's not worth the risk to you because you haven't thought about it. And the last thing I'll say to you on this topic is this is a lot like getting into a fight. For those of you who have, you might understand this. For those of you who haven't, bear with me. If when you go into a fight, it all happens pretty quick usually. But if your mindset is, oh God, don't get hurt, you're fucked. It's going to be a bad day.
Starting point is 00:19:26 So when you think about all of the reasons why these things won't work, how they could possibly fail, you set yourself up for these things to about what do i need to do to make sure that i end this thing you're much more likely to be successful if you ask yourself the same things about these activities that you believe could possibly help you, but might not. If you focus on the, how could these things help me and what do I need to do to give them the best chance to be successful? You are more likely to have the outcome that you desire. That's all do that bonus exercise so if you listened to this episode today that's it that's it that's the episode do that exercise if you listened to this episode and thought to yourself, I'm going to try that. And after you've tried it, you found yourself thinking that maybe working with an active life coach is my best route. ActiveLifeRx.com slash shrugged. Starting point is 00:21:43 Schedule it. Schedule it. Schedule it. Bite the bullet. I know it's easy for me to say as I sit here in my office that you should be spending the $250 to go see the doctor in your town without any kind of certainty that you're going to have any successful outcomes.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Easy for me to say. I'm not you. I get it. Ask yourself, how would I feel if a year from now, everything was the same and I never tried?
