Starting point is 00:00:03 Well, good morning. It is Wednesday. Retro and Buffalo. Jack and I at our incredible palatial studios in Mardaloup, where we have the last bag of caffeinated coffee from the coffee. I've been used. I've sent out an emergency alert to our coffee guy, Chad. I mean, we're on pins and needles here.
Starting point is 00:00:30 It's a very precarious spot we find ourselves in today. Does Jack drink coffee or is he a energy drink guy? You started energy drink, but I feel like we're converting him, Jack. I've gotten off the energy drinks, Rhett. You'd be proud. Good boy, Jackie, because I think I remember that we tried to tell you that, and then you were struggling with it. Yeah, and like, I don't know that you liked coffee.
Starting point is 00:00:52 What was your relationship with coffee prior to working here, Jack? I don't like coffee, like a hot coffee in the summer. Okay. That was my thing. So if it's warm outside, I'd rather a nice, cold beverage in the morning. Yeah. Once it gets cold, I don't, I don't hate coffee. You're such a boo.
Starting point is 00:01:07 You're such a booze, Ken. Nice cold beverage every morning in the summer. Good thing we got a fridgeful origins behind us, eh? Mm. Mm. For the summer at 10 a.m. 9 a.m. 8.30? Not for long. Uh, right?
Starting point is 00:01:24 We talked about it yesterday. What an opportunity it was for the Calgary Flames. A, for Dan Vlodar to show what you're made of. And if not, Dan Vlodar, then B. for Dustin Wolf, who'd played one meaningful hockey game in his career. Game 82 last year, I would not put in that category. A loss against Ottawa that certainly wasn't on him was his only real game. We saw both last night, which is probably bad news for the Flames.
Starting point is 00:01:48 I don't think it was ideal. Are we done with Flodar? Or is this trend going to continue? What's our confidence level with this guy now? Well, I'll say this. They were dog shit in front of him. them. And the coach basically said as much last night post game. He said, yeah, but the coach is going to say that to protect that goal tend to. Well, let me just
Starting point is 00:02:13 get a quote because you can protect players and then there's going the extra mile to try to embarrass the people you aren't complimenting. He said, in our first period, I thought our most physical player was probably our goalie. So I think reading between the lines, Huska was like, yeah, no one came to work in the first period, which matches what we all saw, what people were saying in the comments last night on Afterburner. Dreadful start, first shot goal, but I mean, Jesus, like that's a wire job from the slot unimpeded. That's not what you want to allow any time of night, never mind is the first shot. I didn't like the third goal that went in, but they were really bad in front of them.
Starting point is 00:02:53 And I also think that Wolf's got a higher ceiling than this guy. I don't think Dan Vladar is a star waiting to happen. I think he's probably a backup, whether he's a platoon guy or a two, is out there. We got to figure out what Dustin Wolf is because he's been too good for every level of hockey he's played in. See, I mean, I guess it's not the end of the world. I'm kind of opposite. I want to make sure that Vladar is a dog shirt or play him out of it so we can get something for. I don't doubt what Wolf's going to be.
Starting point is 00:03:26 I've got more confidence that he can be good. I feel like, but regardless, the team wasn't good. the one thing I would say to Husk is if you were looking for physicality, why did you take Gilbert out? Like he would have been... And I always wonder about that. Like, Pospicil is the same thing.
Starting point is 00:03:49 But then you're like, okay, what are they dealing with? Are they nicked up? We saw Zeri out and people over there. What is Zeri out? He's a little dinged up. And I would understand if both Pospicel and Gilbert were dinged up, but I also don't, I'm just speculating. But you're right.
Starting point is 00:04:02 I don't know that he was looking for. for physicality. I think it was his way of saying the fellow showed up an hour late last night. They started playing at 8, not 7. Yeah, and that's 100% realistic. So it's fine and I wasn't
Starting point is 00:04:17 in an uproar that Gilbert wasn't playing last night or Pospesville. Those guys might be hurt. I didn't think you know, I want that you watch Minnesota. They look like the team they're supposed to be last night, right? They look like a playoff team. They're 4 and 0 under Heinz now. Caprizov was back to
Starting point is 00:04:32 being very good. They look deep and talented. Matt Boldy had a really tough start to the season. Scoring twice probably has him feeling better. They got Marco Rossi playing on the top line now. Scary. One of the things that I noticed was in the second
Starting point is 00:04:48 period, the Wild had some power play time. And they had it in the flame zone zippeting around like a just and then the flames got a power play. A little more static. We talked about it last night.
Starting point is 00:05:05 Their first power play, it was 31 seconds. They had one shot. They allowed two, and then they took a dumb penalty, and it was it. That's 0 for one. And then on the second power play, they allowed a shorthanded breakaway that Wolf had to stop. That was the most dangerous chance on the power play. And the third, they had two shots. Finish 0 for three, best chance all night.
Starting point is 00:05:22 And the power play was a shorthanded breakaway the other way. Ouch. And I don't know that I've ever noticed it so glaringly that it's the high end that the flames are missing. Like they, they, they, they can have compete, but they don't have high-end talent to, to make plays on the power play or even during the games, right? Like with Minnesota there, clearly they're on a role and they're playing well,
Starting point is 00:05:51 but they look like a team with some high-end talent, some guys that were moving the puck, making plays. I don't know, I even get down on the flames, but they don't look. you take those two teams and maybe the flames weren't at their best? No, they certainly weren't, yeah. But what is the flames best and can it match up? I would say Minnesota's got more talent than the Calgary Flames and I would expect them to be better. I think they're a playoff team.
Starting point is 00:06:18 I think there's lots of games to be made in the net mining area, which we started to see last night with Gustafs who's always been great against the flames. And Caprizov got off to a slow start, boldie starting to roll. Like, I just think there's more high-end guys. like they could have a few 25 goal guys. The flames are in line for zero. It's, it's,
Starting point is 00:06:38 the longer it goes, the longer it goes, the more clear it becomes that maybe we won't have a 25 goal guy. Right. We started the year. We're getting into the year. Is there one? Like,
Starting point is 00:06:50 I don't know that you can't certainly put anyone down in pen, but at this point, I don't even know if you can pencil anyone in. Like, who is it in the comments here? Mickey O. Mickey O is in the comments there. Find that one, Jack.
Starting point is 00:06:59 It was this. Connor's area is the only guy. They could really make a play that changes a game. And that's not to say that anyone else in this roster can't make a nice play. But if you want to talk about a signature game where a player is like, wow, did he ever just grab that and get the two points? Goleys can do that. Sure. But like it's crazy how two years ago this team had like five guys you could list that it was like,
Starting point is 00:07:22 oh, Kachuk took that game over. Like, wow, like that was a phenomenal game by Johnny Goodrow. I mean, they weren't great, but Johnny comes up with three points. They win. you know, Lindholm on that line was a very different looking animal. All of a sudden it's like, yeah, there's no, I don't know that there's a single player that would go on the top line of a contender on this team. I think everything you're looking at is second, third, fourth line.
Starting point is 00:07:46 I always think about it this way where you're the opposing team and you come into Calgary or they come into your rink and coaches have a list up, guys that are playing, strengths and stuff. And on those lists, a lot of times you look at them and go, okay, I got to be careful with this guy. I got to watch this line. Okay, these guys are the playmakers.
Starting point is 00:08:09 I just don't know who you circle if you're the opposing team. It's, if we work hard, we'll be okay. There's not one guy that's going to ruin our night if you're playing the Calgary Flames. If we work hard, if we show up and work, we've got a great shot of getting two points. That doesn't mean the Flames can't win.
Starting point is 00:08:26 We've seen them, you know, they beat Vegas at the start of the stroke of like their goalie was sensational. Any team could beat anyone in this league. We saw the San Jose Sharks erase a multi-goal deficit last night and beat a team in a playoff spot. They're the worst team in the league in talent. But it's just there isn't to your point a guy you have to game plan for. There isn't.
Starting point is 00:08:44 No, there's no show up and play. And that's the thing that's like it's the same scenario for the flames. The teams that are playing against are going for. If we, if we show up, we should have a real good chance of success for. the flames to have success, it's like, we need to all show up and play hard. Like, we're going to have to committee this. So again, it's fine.
Starting point is 00:09:06 And again, I think the beauty of it all is, especially from where I sit, there's no pressure. Go play that game. I get that for you and I. There's no pressure, Rhett, but I don't know that I can believe it's the same for Craig Conroy and Ryan Huska.
Starting point is 00:09:21 And that's why I think they're not going to go on a let's showcase Vladara run here. I do think they're going to go with Wolf because they still, it's their jobs to get to the playoffs. And I don't think they've quit on that. I think they understand it's a lot harder than they thought at the beginning of the year, especially when you start two, seven and one. But I think Ryan Huska is still polling win the game leavers.
Starting point is 00:09:42 And Craig Conroy is still GMing to win. Just quick reaction to that before we get to noodles. Yeah, he probably is, but I think Conroy's eyes. And Huska always has to play to win. A coach has to. They have to. So that's not an oddity. But I think at least Conroy can look at it a little more long term and go,
Starting point is 00:10:06 this group is not a threat. I have a solution to make us feel better in a moment. But first we've got to go to one of our NHL insiders for Tellis. It is our boy, Jamie McClend Noodles, who he's at a casino somewhere, whether it's Ontario, Alberta in his car. Is this, where's the moon roof? noodles. Is it snowing? Where's that sexy moon for you? I'm in a parkade, but I, uh, I'm parcated at a casino, right? I'm not at a casino today. I am, uh, heading up there. But yes, I'm, uh, I'm just outside the
Starting point is 00:10:42 office. So what's going on? Okay. Well, let me do this really quickly. Our insider hotline is brought you by tell us. They're using world class leading technology to drive meaningful change from transforming health care and making our food supply more sustainable to reducing our environmental and connecting Canadians in need. You want to hear about giving company noodles? How about 125 million to local communities in 2022 alone? 1.4 million hours volunteered. Let's make the future friendly learn more at tellus.com slash gives back.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Okay, so noodles is in a parkade, rats at the rank, he's forgotten his computer. And the flames, they thought the game started at eight last night. They forgot it started at 707. And so, I mean, everyone dealing with different issues today. Yeah, I mean, at least mine are controllable. Rets, you know, I think are controllable. I don't know, depending on what time this guy got out of bed. But honestly, watching that game, I've got three words, out to lunch.
Starting point is 00:11:43 They were out to lunch. Like, that's what it was. Like, like, the goal, like, I felt bad for Lidar because I thought he made a couple huge saves in the first period to just keep it a game. And then, you know, I didn't love the third goal that ended his night, which I get it. You know, it's a wrist shot, change angle. You know, it's kind of a one on four. Like, how about not give up the blue line to somebody like that? I thought their D were just horrendous on playing that.
Starting point is 00:12:14 You could speak to it more from the technical aspect. But I just, they were not engaged in that game whatsoever. And I know Minnesota's got the new coach bump and all of a sudden Caprisoff looks like you can play hockey again. and Matt Boldie and all these guys in Minnie. But that was a no-show from that group last night, like a no-show. And, you know, you've got to find a way on nights where maybe you don't have it. Like, who's going to bring it? Who's going to drag you out of it?
Starting point is 00:12:40 They just didn't have anybody. And unfortunately, you know, the big cheer for Dustin Wolf to come in, great. I mean, Vladar, like I say, I didn't lay it at his feet. I like that Huska was trying to coach that team. He was trying to give them a spark. and unfortunately they didn't react to it. Well, so they have the goal of change. You get an A.J. Greer fight and then you get a Michael Backling goal.
Starting point is 00:13:02 All of that within five minutes. But it didn't stay for long. The boldy second of the night made it 4-1 and it was curtains. It was a little bit of momentum swing and there's very few levers that coach can pull it when you're down 3-0. But yeah, it didn't really change how things. Is there, noodles, is there concern because you go back to the start of the year, the first month, really. They were a dog shirt.
Starting point is 00:13:28 And they would take games off. Now, I think they've been better and they've competed. But that first period and half game last night reminded me of why we'd throw it in the towel in October. Yeah. Is it just one of those nights? Have they found themselves or are they reverting back to what they really are? Well, I think what it is, and this is, this is, this is, they've earned this is you're not going to get the benefit of the doubt because of how you,
Starting point is 00:13:58 you started this season and kind of established what you can be in a negative way. So I'll give an example. You know, Evanton's won four in a row. If they lay an egg tonight and their goaltender's no good, people are going to be like that. You know, like you're not getting the benefit of the doubt of your play lately because they have played better. We have seen more spirited play. We have seen, you know, some big. wins and some quality play from top players. But when they lay an egg, which we all do and we've
Starting point is 00:14:30 seen it before, the mind immediately goes back to what we saw. And we saw that, you know, it wasn't like we saw that maybe in the last couple weeks because they've been a lot better. And, you know, people have been singing their praises for being resilient and, you know, Zedorov, maybe that distraction's out of the room now and you move on. But when you revert back to what we saw in October, and in early November, people don't forget. So you're going, okay, here we go again type of thing. So they don't get the benefit of doubt. That's my point.
Starting point is 00:15:03 And I was thinking the same thing, the first half of the game going, there's just nothing there. You know, is this really the team? Like, what is the real team? I think that's the question mark from a lot of people. Yeah. And to be fair, the first month of the season, their PDO was dog shit.
Starting point is 00:15:19 November, it was great. The records reflect that. The truth's always in the middle. They're not a, you know, 700 hockey team. They're also not a 300 hockey team. They're probably a little under 500. And through almost a third of the season, that's where they're at.
Starting point is 00:15:31 They play 25 games or a couple of games under 500. That sounds about right. Yeah. Well, I don't disagree with that. It's just, you know, last night, I think what happens is you expect, you know, they start to get on a bit of a role. You want the team to find an identity. Like, that's the one thing I've noticed.
Starting point is 00:15:50 And this isn't just the flames. throughout the league, there's a handful of teams that I use the term buttoned up. You just know, like Boston plays the same way every night. They may lose a couple games here or there. They're just buttoned up. They just play. They play hard. They play with structure.
Starting point is 00:16:07 And if they get goalied one night and a goalie steals one or they just are out to lunch, like don't have the legs or the minds, you get it. But Boston plays very consistently. Vegas plays consistently. the Rangers for the most part, other than last night's game, because I watched that game, the Ottawa game, they play a consistent game. Everybody else is somewhere in the middle. It's like, okay, we got an A game and we don't have a B. We've got like a D plus, a C minus game.
Starting point is 00:16:38 So everyone's A, you know, everyone has a great night. But the good teams, when they don't have it that night, they have an ability to find a B game where it's something. maybe some lead or some goalie digs him out of it something but like and this is the flames included they don't have a b game they have an a when we see them play well and spirited and and engage in the game and they've got a d plus a c minus type of thing and that's what we saw last night so seen as you pretended to be a goaltender for a long time what's the are we is there the positives with Markstrom going out right now is that you get a chance to see Wolf. How are you going to manage this if you're the flames?
Starting point is 00:17:27 You need Vladar to be better and to prove that he can still be a player or at least find out, but you also have the opportunity to have Wolf come in and establish himself or not. Like, which way would you lean? Give Villadar some run and find out if he's still a player or play the go with Wolf and give him his shot? what's a good plan for these guys? Well, the plan too is, okay, I'll even go a step further. What do you believe the plan is for Jacob Markstrom? Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 00:18:00 So there's a short term and there's a long term. Let's start on the short term focus noodles because I do want to talk about the long term, but I think they're very different conversation. So let's start, let's say you got two weeks here. What are you doing in that? I would almost split the games because you still need to keep in mind. Lidar, who's played better and played well, it ties to the long term, but I'll keep it short term.
Starting point is 00:18:23 You still have to keep Vlodar's value very high because he had a slow start to the season. So if there were teams looking at him, if you were going to go with a Markstrom-Wulf tandem, Vladar had to get playing for teams to go, okay, yeah, we will give up X for that. So Vlodar, if he is a trade piece or somebody that you are looking at to maybe move on from, if you believe Markstrom and Markstrom's going to mentor Wolf, then you have to keep Vladar playing. But also, you want to see this is an opportunity for Wolf in, you know, in an injury, in a team that is 500, we'll call it, in that range.
Starting point is 00:19:03 You've got to give him some runway to play too. So that's why I said if it's a two-week span and you got seven games or eight games, I could see four and four or something like that, five and three. but Vladar's got to play, but so does Wolf. Like I don't think Wolf's there to wear a baseball cap. He's got to, you've got to find out, and I believe he can play, but he needs experience, he needs the right situation. But again, in the short term, I think he's got to play some games,
Starting point is 00:19:30 but so does Vladar. So I look at it as a tandem and just kind of, you know, who you want to play on that particular night. Yeah, and sure, the obvious stipulation, if someone wants to hang a zero, by all means, go and play the next. Like, that'd be lovely. Right. Now to the long term, a lot of people keep talking about Vlodar, Vlard, Vlard.
Starting point is 00:19:48 Why do we think if this team's going to reload that keeping Markstrom is the best move? Is he not the more marketable, valuable asset and a guy that wants to win at this stage of his career? I believe that. He's a starting goaltender. So, you know, if I'm L.A., and I know Camp Talbot's had a great start to the season. L.A. is, what, 10 in a row? Like, they're just a... On the road, yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:10 They're a juggernaut. but you know it's phoenix copley and cam talbot who had three different injuries last year so is l a l.A. looking for you know respectfully an upgrade of that position yes you know the leaps uh emminton you name it like there is marketplace Carolina can't get a save like i i don't know what's happened there so like there's teams that are you know supposed to be top freight teams that would be shopping for a guy who makes six million two more years. So you'd have them really for three playoff runs if you're looking at it. Like I think there would be a marketplace for Markstrom. If Craig Conroy goes, I'm going to move away from him. I'm looking
Starting point is 00:20:54 to get out from underneath long-term deals. I'm going to continue to, I'm going to start the rebuild however we want to frame it, a retool. I think there's a marketplace for Markstrom. Absolutely because he's proven that he's a one. Like that's the thing. And not, maybe John, Gibson, who's a one, but he's a drowning one right now in Anaheim. Blackwood, I think, is a one, but he has still yet to prove it. I like his contract. I think he's got upside. He's played in two bad situations, New Jersey when they're retooling, San Jose when they're retooling. I've heard, though, and I'll just say this, I've heard he's a goalie. So he's a strange duck that way. So I don't know what that means. I just
Starting point is 00:21:42 like somebody told me, because I like the kid. He's big. He's got good feet. He's got a lot of skill. But what I was told is like Jamie, he's like the definition of a goalie. I'm like, okay, I don't know what that means. But so
Starting point is 00:21:57 there's three guys that could be potentially targeted. So bring it back to Calgary. If you decide you're going to retool and Wolf is ready to push through. Vladar has one more year, correct? 2.2. 2.2. I thought it was 2.8. So 2.2. So there's, you know, if you decide to retool, there's your tandem in the retool and, you know, you see what it shakes out. What you've done
Starting point is 00:22:23 is kick the can down the road for a year or two. That being said, if you believe you just want to try and make the playoffs and then Vladars the marketplace and you keep Markstrom and Wolf and Markstrom mentors Wolf and shows them how to be a number one in the NHL. So you've got options. And to me, honestly, a lot of them are positive because you've got three guys who are NHL goalies. Now different tiers of them, but they are NHL goalies. But Markstrom would have the most cachet and would probably garner the most right now.
Starting point is 00:22:56 What are your thoughts on that, Red? He's got a no move, but he's here to win. He's not 25. He's in the, you know, this is his last big contract, so to speak. noodles laid it out pretty good the the hardest part right now
Starting point is 00:23:11 for me is Vlodar because I don't know what his marketability is I don't think he's played that well and I don't think other teams are looking at him going he's going to help us move forward
Starting point is 00:23:22 so but I also in Buffalo the kid they sent down to the miners Levi Levi yeah and so my My word of caution with moving Markstrom is, great, move them, you'll get a good return, I believe, and I think he would accept a trade,
Starting point is 00:23:43 but you're putting wolf out to the wolves. Like he ran, and Levi hasn't been able to do it, and now Levi's coming from college, but you know what I mean? Like, it is, it is nice to have someone capable to learn under. Take a little heat off. And you don't have to trade Markstrom right now. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:08 You've got time. So I look at guys who pushed through. Ben Bishop was in front of Vasilevsky. And then it was, you know, Vasi's time to push through. You make him expendable. Like it's, I've always believed in having a veteran goaltender and a young up and comer. Because the young up and comer can watch the veteran, how he handles the day to day. I'll give an example.
Starting point is 00:24:34 I broke into the league. I actually, believe it or not, was supposed to be a starter. I mean, we all are start. We're all starters in lower levels before we make it to the NHL. So they had Ron Hextall play with me. He was 30. I was 21, 22. Couldn't have been a better mentor as far as work ethic, preparation, all of that.
Starting point is 00:24:54 And I've always believed in having somebody who's been there and done that to play with somebody who is just learning how to be there and do that type of thing. So that's why I'm not as bullish on moving Markstrom, but I just said there's tremendous options there for Connie when he decides on which way he's going to go. Because it could be an off-season move where you've allowed Wolf to continue to grow,
Starting point is 00:25:25 get some development, get some games this year. You maybe move Vladar at the deadline. Again, I agree with you, Rhett. what is the marketplace for a tandem goaltender? Because I, you know, I watched Eric Comrie play last night. Like I didn't love his game. You know, not that he was the difference. Ouka Pooka Luca there in Buffalo, too.
Starting point is 00:25:50 Like he's come around, but UPL. But I think Buffalo, like Lidar would be at least a peer or maybe an upgrade on one of them. there are teams like again Carolina can't get a save they might just need a different face in there like it might just be you know what Kachetkoff has struggled
Starting point is 00:26:12 Rant has struggled, Randy Anderson's got blood clots they might just need a face to build around Edmonton needs you know Calvin Pickert's the backup Jack Campbell's you know he's at his ups and downs as it trends on Twitter every day whether he plays well or he had a shutout and then he got allowed four goals on 30 shots the other day.
Starting point is 00:26:32 So it's like, you know, I don't know what Evanton's going to do, but if I'm them, I'm looking to stabilize that position because Stuart Skinner's not going to play 70 games. So there's options there. And I'm with you. I think that's the nice thing for, Connie, is that he does have options. And I think that he's probably got the support of all the fans
Starting point is 00:26:53 in watching this team that the expectations aren't too high anymore. I think they were high. I think there's a little bit of reality that's set in. And I think ultimately, it comes down to what's your return. I'm not going to move Markstrom just to move them. It's way better to have Markstrom here. It's manageable. He's playing well.
Starting point is 00:27:13 He can mentor Wolf. The fly in the ointment is how good can we get Vladar to look if we're going to move them? Because I don't think you need to carry. I do think Vlodar has to be gone or somebody has to be gone by the end of the year. Oh, yeah. I would hate to see three guys here after the dead. line guys. No, I would say you've got to move somebody at the deadline because at that point,
Starting point is 00:27:34 you'll know what your team is, whether you're on, you know, whether you're pushing for a playoff spot, whether you're in it where you're not, because I think they're going to be right around there. You know, that being said though is, you know, what, what is the thought process from Connie? Like, for example, I thought he did well on Zedorov, not retaining and, you know, and getting some picks where, you know, he has the. luxury of time. I guess that's where I was going with. Like Zadora asked for a trade.
Starting point is 00:28:06 You know, Connie didn't have to trade him the next day. He let a marketplace build. You know, there were, my understanding is there were other teams that were offering maybe better situations, but they wanted the flames to chew money. And in
Starting point is 00:28:21 not even better situations, just maybe comparable draft picks. What was the third and a fifth, correct? Yeah, third and three years, the fifth this summer. Right. So you get a third and a fifth for a guy who's who thinks he's a one, two, but he's really probably a five. Five, right? So, and we saw it last night, you know, like we saw him, like I watched that game last night and, and he was doing Zadoroff stuff out there again. So is Tyler Myers. Oh my God. Tyler Myers did a little like a, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:28:53 he did like a cycle play right to Jack Hughes. This was awesome. Someone posted it and it was literally Jack Hughes on the forecheck on Tyler Myers. And instead of following through on the hit, he stops five feet short and stands on the wall. Myers without even looking, spits it right onto his tape. He centers goal. Yeah, it was an unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:29:13 Now, I initially when I watched that live, I thought, okay, Jack Hughes probably should finish your hit on that play, you know, kind of get in on the forecheck. He like stops and circles back and Myers. Like I would almost question, And Rhett, you probably heard this where Geisel yell a guy's name from another team. You know, like, MISI, MISI, you know. I think that's exactly what happened.
Starting point is 00:29:39 Because he put it right on his tape without. And J.T. Miller was kind of in that area, maybe going to skate into it, but he was late on the play. But you look at that, I just, I'm coming back to the return for Zedorov. Like, Connie has time here. And as things unfold, it'll dictate. Now, we just talked about it. The next two weeks and how Wolf looks, how Vlodar looks,
Starting point is 00:30:03 might dictate, you know, short term if they feel comfortable enough, heading down the path of either moving Markstrom or building up a marketplace for Vlodar where Markstrom comes back and mentors. Like the decision might be made for you based on the play of these two players coming up. Yeah, no question. And there's other things that are more pressing. Like you've got three UFAs, none of them are goalies. It's that are high profile, high, you know,
Starting point is 00:30:28 you know, top of the desk items. And none of them are killing it. Like, none of them are going. I mean, I think Hanifans having a career year, to be honest, noodles. But, but I, I look at him. So this would be my question to both of you. Is he a, what is he? He's not a one.
Starting point is 00:30:43 He doesn't run your power play. He's doing it here. He's a three. He's a two, three. That's what I think he's. I think he's a three. Which is a valuable guys, right? Very, very valuable.
Starting point is 00:30:53 But I just, in watching him, like he has, he's going to have to play with us. stable player. You know, I don't, I define a stable player like a TANF. Like TANF is stable for me. That's why he plays with Tano. I agree. Right. Like, because Hanof-Fin will be his best when he plays with somebody who can cover
Starting point is 00:31:12 up some of the, you know, the brain dead plays, I'll call it, like, you know, the plays where you have a lapse in judgment. And that's the only thing. My only knock on him is there are some lapses in judgment where you're like, where'd that come from? You know, great skater, can handle the puck.
Starting point is 00:31:28 You know, he seems to have some jump to his play, to your point. But I just, there's a one or two where you're like, whoa. He's a three. With all the skill that he has, he's a three. Yeah. And a contender, that's a valuable piece. Like, let's, like Travis Hammondick command a first and two seconds. He's a four.
Starting point is 00:31:47 Like, this is not a thing that's not valuable. There are a lot of teams that like, shit, if we can solidify that second pair, that's awesome. And if Hanifun runs a second power play or not, who cares? He's going to play 22 to 25. He can penalty kill. He skates like the wind. Like there's no tool missing for Noah Hannafin.
Starting point is 00:32:06 He shoots it. He skates big minutes like elite tools everywhere. He just can't think it. That's it. Well, but that's the tool box. So that's why it's three out of one, right? Right.
Starting point is 00:32:16 The toolbox is so, I mean, how many great players do we see who maybe have average other things, but they think they, you know who's a great player that has an elite toolbox is, Ryanhart. Like I think I look at Sam Ryan H in Ebenton. You know, Ryan Nugent Hopkins is always, he's a, he plays in third or fourth gear. He's never in fifth gear. He's not a speedster, but he's, he thinks the game really well. Like if you had an elite toolbox, then, then you're right. He's a clear cut one. But he is a three and he will garner a lot for you. Does Tanna have want to stay? Do they have to move him? Do wait? Like, what is the consensus there? I think you have to move them. I think you have.
Starting point is 00:33:01 The next contract isn't going to be good for him, right? Is it? Like, I just, when I look at the team, I, and again, it depends on what you do with everyone else, right? Like if Hanifan's gone and you, you need people to still play in the NHL, and if he likes it there in Calgary, great. If I'm him, I want to go and play on a team that's going to threaten to win. My fear with a guy like Tanev, I think he'd be great.
Starting point is 00:33:28 I think what are you going to get out of them moving forward how many guys noodles at 33 rugged defenseman it it just ends it just it just ends and he is this month like this is the time to sell without question of my mind especially if you're retooling red this is a contender asset not agreed yeah and you you know what there are teams like this team here in Toronto like they they they should pay a king's ransom for him because you're not you're not trying to build a you know for three years right now their windows now their windows next season like they've got their window is while john tavares still has legs and you know so i look at it they i i almost feel like tree would have to have an overpay for them but it might be worth it because this defensive core here in toronto uh is suspect at best and and they need they need a guy like Tanev,
Starting point is 00:34:30 a warrior, tough to play against block shots. My only worry is he might be if he was a car, you know, maybe he's a you know, a car with 350,000 kilometers on. He's running out of oil. Yeah, he's a Ferrari
Starting point is 00:34:46 with 300,000 kilometers on it, you know what I mean? Like that's what worries me about him. He's a working truck, noodles to 300,000. Yeah, I was going to say yeah, an F-150. Like I was trying to think of like a high-end truck out there. But yeah, he's like
Starting point is 00:35:02 a brand new, he's like an old F-150 with 300,000 kilometers on it, but you trust him, man, like he's, he's a guy you want. I'll quickly note the cash thing that you referenced earlier. The flames didn't want to eat money on Zedorov. I think it's wise they didn't. Given the number of other deals
Starting point is 00:35:20 you've got coming, you can only retain on three. Let's say it takes retention on a TANIV or a Lundholm to get a massive haul. You've got to do it. You don't want to tie down all those slots to lock in money. I think getting some money on TANF probably helps them get to Toronto. They are so tight. I think it's the only way they get anything done is with retention, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:35:40 Yeah. And that's why I mentioned the word overpay. Yeah. Because you're going to get something good because if you're eating money on TANF, you're eating money on, let's say, Markstrom to make them not six, make them a five or a four. If you're eating money on Linholm to, you know, some of this, too, keep in mind, like, if you play it right, like, could you, could it be one of the, like, if the sign and trade type of thing?
Starting point is 00:36:06 Like, can you get, like, would Lynn Holm want to sign and trade? You know, like the, the Kuchuk. Why not? What Hannah? Exactly. Like, that's it. All it does is, for me, it drives up the price for Connie. Yeah. Because you're not trading away a rental. You're getting, because that's, that's the,
Starting point is 00:36:25 the whispers around here is TANA's a local boy from Toronto could sign here in the summer. You know, you're going to, maybe Trees not offering a lot because he can get him this summer type of thing. And, or it might be a trade and sign or a sign and trade type of thing.
Starting point is 00:36:43 So, like if Connie holds tight on him and says, okay, I'll lead a bit of money on him and I'll sign him to the extension that you are going to sign him to this summer anyways. But I need X, I need the draft pick to go from a second to a first or vice versa or add in a second one. You know, that's what I'm thinking as far as if I'm the flames, you've got to be creative in that scenario.
Starting point is 00:37:09 Okay. You know what to Ottawa. They've hardly played. I was looking atals. They're last in the east, but that's not fair. They're like six, seven games behind some other team. Literally. They went to Sweden.
Starting point is 00:37:18 They need some time off after. Safe to say, DJ Smith, the hottest seat in the league right now. a big win last night, but God, like, it's supposed to be happening. I look at that roster and I look at the flames and I'm like, how? How are you not better than the flames? And, you know, they're 500. You're right. And they just clad back to 500, really good game last night.
Starting point is 00:37:38 I don't know if you saw that they added Jacques Martine this morning. So the count is back. He's, you know, real tactical coach. He was my coach in Florida. He was a good guy. really well respected in Ottawa. You know, is that put DJ on the clock? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:38:00 Maybe he comes in to assess how things are behind the scenes. I think the one thing I've learned from Michael Ann Loward, Stevie Steos, is there's no knee-jerk reactions here. They had to, you know, the Pierre Dorian thing I was, I don't think it was a knee-jerk reaction. It was just a necessity out of what had happened, you know, with the draft pick and all of that. the whatever that trade was.
Starting point is 00:38:24 I can't remember what that trade. Oh, the God, Dadanof trade. Datanoff trade. Yeah. So, I agree. They've only played five road games out of 19 as well. Like it's, they've got to make some hay here. I'm doing their game tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:38:42 It's the Leifes, Ottawa in, in Ottawa. They play every second day to like January 20th. So this is their schedule. They've got to get going. You're right. I look at the roster. They should be better in the standings. They haven't gotten the consistent goaltending.
Starting point is 00:38:59 Forsberg's been really good in his last two games. Corpusallo in Columbus the other night wasn't great in his return to Columbus. So he needs to be better. The Shabbat injury, I think, is going to hurt them again. It sounds like they might announce that he might be out a little bit longer than expected because he played the other night. and then now he's out again. So, you know, they're in one, but I agree.
Starting point is 00:39:25 We can't judge them until they've played 25 games like everybody else. Yeah, that's fair. Okay, where do you go from the parkade here? Give us the rundown. Hopefully you haven't locked yourself out today. Anything like that tire change? I did not lock myself out. I've got a one o'clock meeting here with a friend.
Starting point is 00:39:41 And then I've got a couple shows. I was on Sports Center last night and Jay talking about the gritty-gutty flames. So we'll be talking about them again today. Not too much, nothing too crazy. I got a son who's sick at home with strep throat. So the little man is, he was a little bit weepy this morning, but we'll get him to grind it out. Stay away.
Starting point is 00:40:03 Exactly. That's going to turn off his screen. Wow. Kids are, kids are so germy, though. They're the germiest little trolls you've ever seen in your life. How old? He's six. And I'm sleeping beside me, coughing in my face yesterday.
Starting point is 00:40:18 So I'm on the cost. I'm sure I'm getting it next. Get a nebulizer. My nephew, I still remember. I tell it lots. Was that a ranking Calgary? And I watched him lick, walk down the handrail and lick the handrail the whole way,
Starting point is 00:40:38 just like a 20 section of hand. Just lick the whole thing. Yeah. And he's fine. He's building up his immune system. That's what he is. That's what we need. Delicious.
Starting point is 00:40:52 Have a great day. Thanks, doodles. Okay, guys. Have a good one. We'll chat soon. All right. Later. There is.
Starting point is 00:40:57 One of our NHL insiders for TELUS, our insider hotline, a reminder of the Calgary Flames and TELUS a great relationship. They've been partners since 2005. The TELUS Skater program with the Flames sees both the Flames and TELS identified deserving young hockey players out there
Starting point is 00:41:14 to participate in the pregame. The TELUS Skater experience is what it's like. to feel like an NHL player, including the warm up on the Saddle Dome Ice Pregame with the team. Title sponsor, also the premium club at the Saddle Dome, the Tellus Club.
Starting point is 00:41:26 Thank you to tell us for our insider hotline. Did we learn anything on the goalies, or is it just things we were already thinking we just all took turns saying them out loud? I think it was a lot of the same. It's amazing how many teams need goaltenders. There's no. So I think it's the return.
Starting point is 00:41:45 What are you getting in return? Yeah, we can make a deal. or not make a deal. It's all about what you're getting in return. Yeah. And the interesting one... That's not one I'd want to do. Well, and that's the interesting one is I'm still...
Starting point is 00:41:59 I know that it looks like the Zadora not eating money is a big deal because it allows you to eat money on other contracts. I would like some confirmation that they will eat money. Right? Like, I can't decide. It's not a common theme for the flames to do that. And I can't decide.
Starting point is 00:42:18 if ownership was like, we're not eating money. So whatever trade you can make that we're not paying someone not to play here, was it that or was it we're strategically getting rid of all the money because we're going to use it somewhere else? I'm not convinced of one or the other. I just confused because the hockey ops has a budget of the cap. It's not like you're going over the cap when you eat money. You still have to stay under the cap. It's not an added expense to an owner.
Starting point is 00:42:48 And if you're getting more back in trade, which you do, it's entirely justifiable. It's not like going to Uncle Murray and asking for another $2 million. It isn't. Your payroll is still your payroll. Like you don't go from $83.5 to $85 million if you eat some money on a trade. No, but it's still real money. I just don't think it's. It's still money.
Starting point is 00:43:10 I get what you're saying. It's your payroll, but it's still money, right? Blake. So, like, my concern would be if this, and I'm not saying it's not a thing because, I mean, there's, we don't know how the owner operates. He doesn't speak publicly. Um, which is right. You would take a lesser package from Markstrom and maybe take a collection of seconds and B prospects and not a first and a prospect so that you didn't have, so you could save one million dollars. Like that is so incredibly short-sighted.
Starting point is 00:43:40 And I think someone so bottom line focused as this owner would understand the value of higher picks and the value of better prospects. Like, I just, I know you're right. It's only happened once. Pike had it the other day in the chat. It was like some weird minor deal and they ate a tiny amount of money. But I feel like that's more coincidence than a strategy. It may be the situation they've never been in where they needed to eat money. I have no, I have no insight on it.
Starting point is 00:44:06 I'm just curious because it's never happened. And it's, and you shouldn't be planning for that to happen. Like it's not good management. to go, hey, we're going to sign this guy. And if we have to eat half the contract, who cares? Like, that's not a good strategy either. So you shouldn't put yourself in that position. We've just never seen it in Calgary.
Starting point is 00:44:25 What are they going to do? Yeah, I mean, I don't know that it's bad strategy. If you're looking to retool and get good returns, it's an easy way to get better returns and trades. It's an easy way to add more picks. I get what I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. Like, you're saying you want to be good. You don't want to be an associate. saying when you sign Jacob Markstrom, you don't sign Jacob Markstrom thinking, hey, we'll eat
Starting point is 00:44:49 three million in six years. The strategy, right? Like the strategy for signing Markstrom is to win. Yeah. And that's what the playbook for every owner is win. I get it. It's just that only 16 teams get to the dance. And if you aren't going to win, there's opportunities to make your chances better to win down the road.
Starting point is 00:45:08 We're saying the same thing. I mean, it can be done very well. Like we watched Arizona just load up. up on extra second rounders the last three, four years just by taking bad money off other teams and getting paid for it. Their owner had to spend money on guys that weren't good. He got a lot of second rounders out of it. And yes, they're a floor team, not a cap team, but I just think it's good business. If you're in a position to sell, why not make the best sales possible? 100%. And we are, again, repeating each other because I'm, I'm with you all the way.
Starting point is 00:45:41 another thing we'll agree on today wednesday right i believe it's 25% off wednesday 25% off pizzas and flatbreads at madrose pub we can agree on that that's that's a move now i've never had the flatbread is it different so i think a flatbread's probably just more of like it's a rectangle and it's a thin crust because at madrose i don't want to say it's deep but it's it's not a thin crust pizza necessarily. We see that nice layers of cheese. It's brown, toasty on top. 25% off is a move. So if you were here today,
Starting point is 00:46:19 we could go watch the Carolinas and the Edmontons try to have the worst goaltending in the league. I think that's the battle by some of the advanced numbers. Who's had below expected net minding like Carolina Evanton or one-two. You don't watch that game? Go to Matt Rose. Why not? Why wouldn't you? It's in Royal Oak. 20 beers on tap.
Starting point is 00:46:35 Kid-friendly Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. And it ain't the run-of-the-mill pub food. Not at all. Unbelievable. top shelf grub burgers, pasta, steak, full entrees, and one of the best pizzas in Calgary with that gourmet dough and sauce made fresh daily. Visit their website to order takeout madrose.com. Madrose.combe 15 Royal Vista Place. And if you eat a whole wheel to yourself, that's fine. Don't let it ruin your month. You're hungry. You can go further back. It might even be longer than a month. That might have upset people, someone. You know, you're probably going to feel full for a bit.
Starting point is 00:47:12 you might need to nap in your car in the parking lot for an hour, but don't let it ruin your day. You're week and month. It's not like, just because you have, you could skip supper if that's what you did. You're being efficient. Now you don't need the meal.
Starting point is 00:47:25 That's right. You're intermittent fasting. I'm only eating once a day. You're loading and then fasting. It's brilliant. Don't beat yourself up. Okay. We've got Arizona coming up quickly.
Starting point is 00:47:41 I still have got the passport thing started. really they say like a certain number of business days and I'm like that sounds like not a lot of days that sounds easy we can get that done and then you're like well there's weekends there's a lot of holidays coming up here like there's three holidays within a week there what is it boxing day Christmas and New Year's like fellas we got to get organized here if you don't have a Phoenix is coming up quick the barn bird of vacation today, I'm promising you, okay? If I don't send you a pitcher from a passport office today, you can absolutely drag me tomorrow on the program, threaten my family, whatever you'd like. I am fair game tomorrow if I don't have the wheels in motion for this passport renewal.
Starting point is 00:48:33 Boom would be very upset with you right now. He's upset at everything. I mean, that really isn't saying much, right? He's taking in the teeth all he's gone here, right? Guys have on vacation. Well, we haven't seen any speedo picks or any, you know, snorkeler. What's going on? Where are the beachworms?
Starting point is 00:48:54 Come on, boom. Give us a little love here. Nothing in the group chat. Clearly, he is, yeah, he needed the vacation more than we even imagined. Like, it's stone cold silence out there. He's not interacting. Well, if he was off his own, enjoying pristine nature on a tropical island, I would love that. I just fear that it's just
Starting point is 00:49:15 candy crush and other things instead of communicating with us. I hope his phone is in the bottom of the ocean and he's, yeah. Here's the deal. He's going to be shot out of a cannon, recharged, feeling great when he's back, and then a second trip inside
Starting point is 00:49:31 a month. He's going to join us in Phoenix. We'd like you two as well. This thing's almost sold out. Final push here, fellas. Let's get her going for Alberta Blue Cross. We're heading to Phoenix. Game tickets for the playoff bound coyotes. potentially, my goodness. One five in a row.
Starting point is 00:49:48 That's a fun barn. Could be a wild card implication game. Got your game tickets, got your flights, got your hotel rooms, based on double occupancy. It's 1299. And we got your transfers. You're going to get from the airport to the hotel, hotel the game, all that great stuff.
Starting point is 00:50:01 How about a Friday in Scottsdale? Does that sound good? A Friday in Greater Phoenix? By the pool. You can throw your speed on there, strut around. it'll be all right. Is that called peacocking? Is that what it is?
Starting point is 00:50:16 I don't know, but do whatever you need to do. Just have a bit of a strut. Yeah. Go to nationgear.ca and get yours today. It's a hell of a gift. You know who's tough to shop for his dad? If you and dad like bitching about the flames, come with us and bitch in person at the Mullet Arena.
Starting point is 00:50:34 It'll be fun. Nationgear.com. It's all brought to by Alberta Blue Cross. The Alberta Blue Cross thing is they love memorable moments and there's nothing quite like making memories when you're traveling on the road and tying that into hockey, that's even better. There's nothing better than sharing memories of something. Maybe making more. How about some new ones?
Starting point is 00:50:53 Time for that in Phoenix. Alberta Blue Cross travel insurance protects your memories and more wherever travel takes you. Visit ab.blucross.ca. For more information, Alberta Blue Cross, celebrating life's memorable moments inspired by hockey. So what do you do with TANF here? I think we all understand. Noodles was like, you guys are going to rest out? I was like, look, you'd love to have this guy.
Starting point is 00:51:23 He does not match the life cycle of this hockey team right now. He's 34 this month. And he's incredibly injury prone. He's a warrior. He's an elite defender still. You have to, have to, have to move this guy if he's healthy before the deadline. 100%. There's zero reason to hang on to him.
Starting point is 00:51:42 Even if you had a, I could see some justification. if you've had a young, a real good defender coming up the ranks and you're like, you're going to need a guy like TANF to protect them. Like Shilip's been a few years ago, right? Yeah. We don't have that.
Starting point is 00:52:00 What purpose and role is TANF serving on the squad? And I get, I think Noodles is still the belief that the Flames might be a playoff team. I am not. And even if, even if they are, to me it's just like we said
Starting point is 00:52:18 they could battle their way and maybe find a way in I don't see it but if they do I don't think they're a threat of course if you make it Marksham could get up I don't care it won't be based on Tannav's addition to
Starting point is 00:52:33 the team so I think he has to go I just I don't know what his value is out there but it's irrelevant it's an asset they've had bad asset management for the last five years. This is asset management to me. This is asset management 101. Get what you can and time to move on.
Starting point is 00:52:56 So I'm in a pie in the sky and this is all speculation. We don't have wiretaps on the GMs, sadly. That would be fun. Working on it. We're working on it. If you ate half the money and TANF turns into a $2.25 million defender and let's say you do it at midseason, so half that money's off the books, even teams and really, really big cap problems
Starting point is 00:53:14 can probably find a way to make this work. Would you expect the first rounder back for that kind of a favor, eating half the money? Is that too much? And if you're a team like Toronto, and let's say you're picking 27th, it's pretty much a second rounder, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:53:30 Yeah. But you're going to look at, for a team like Toronto, you're going to look at where's the biggest weakness? Is it the D or is it the goaltender, right? Yeah. You're going to throw all your eggs into a basket, I think. But I don't know.
Starting point is 00:53:50 First does seem aggressive, but maybe. Without retention, I don't think you get it. I'd say that. No. Like, I think a second is very reasonable. The problem is that teams are dealing with, they're all going to be late second rounders, right? But what you can't forget about is there's other teams that by the time the trade
Starting point is 00:54:10 deadline come around, they're eliminated as well. And they will have players that can play the game as well. And they might say, you know what? You're going to give up a first for TANF? Well, we've got a guy that's younger and better and we'll eat half. So give us that first, right? Like there will be competition for the, you know, I don't even know what I'm trying.
Starting point is 00:54:38 The, I don't have this. Just watch the rental D out there is what you're saying. Yes. There's going to be. lots of competition to get returned for players that aren't fits for organizations. Yeah. We know there's 16
Starting point is 00:54:49 teams that make it. There's 16 that don't. And typically you have sort of like that 15 to 18 buyers. Like there might be teams that are like, okay, we're in, but we're not buying. And other teams like, well, we might be able to get in, but I'm not comfy giving up assets if we miss.
Starting point is 00:55:06 We'll send the market dollars into. Yeah. Yeah. I'd trade them at Christmas. Honestly, if it was any other player, I'd say wait until the deadline and get a haul. I just go look at the games played column for Chris Tannav his whole career. If you feel like he's been dinged up in Calgary, it's actually the healthiest run of play he's had in his whole career.
Starting point is 00:55:27 It's the healthiest. And if you think there's a 20% chance that he's going to get injured, you've got to move. It feels very low. It does. It does. You got hit in the fucking face of the puck last week. You've dodged a bullet, Connie.
Starting point is 00:55:40 move them and I see and I'm I'm I'm kind of the same and I think we're again saying the same thing I don't need to maximize risk nothing to maximize yeah yeah don't hold for a first and watch him get injured if you could have had a high second or a second plus at Chris yeah I'm with you I would play patience with the other guys Hanifan's been incredibly durable Lynn home has been incredibly durable I don't feel any sort of like urgency on that front yes they can could get hurt. Any player in the league can get hurt. I don't think, but with Tanna, the level of risk you're inheriting every week
Starting point is 00:56:17 that he stays on this roster is significantly higher than almost any other player in the league. Agreed. Pinda report time for Village Honda in the Northwest Auto Mall and online at VillageHonda.com. Pre-owned inventory, they got lots of it. Access to over 400 vehicles in their dealer
Starting point is 00:56:35 group as well. All makes all models and all budgets. Check them out at well, in that Northwest Auto Mall. You got to love that up just off Stony new vehicle pricing as well is MSRP let's start with a little clip from afterburner last night cammy's getting comfy look out ret she's good look at this we remember mecca like little kipper the kipper kid we've got wolf kid young pup yes young pup run to the litter oh no you know what call him the run and just draft him in the seventh round watching become a star i love it uh i don't know
Starting point is 00:57:10 where you were in life when little Mika or baby Kipersoff, whatever the hell we called him. Kipper kid. Kippercid. When that was going on, I'm sure he is still around. He's not doing the things he did that made him famous in terms of mimicking Mika Kipersov's every move behind him on the glass while the Saddle Dome Faithful just went, oh, because everyone loves Mika. The only cuter than a great goaltender is a kid emulating a great goaltender.
Starting point is 00:57:38 We have our second, second kid goalies. I love it. Someone find that kid and get him back in the dome. It's kind of, this is fun. There is, we said it last time on the show. If it's the NFL, there's nothing more exciting than a young quarterback, a franchise quarterback, because anything's possible. And in hockey, it's also a burgeoning young net minding star. And I'm not sure the wolf's there yet, but there are hallmarks here of great goalies.
Starting point is 00:58:05 There are some commonalities. I just made up a word maybe. Well, it's good word. I love commonalities. Is there, who's done that, what he's done? No one. That's what I mean. So I'm not convinced there are commonalities.
Starting point is 00:58:23 I love the word, but I'm not sure there's many guys that have had the success that he's had and then just climb, climb, climb, climb, and dominate, dominate. We said it last night as well. If he's six three, there's no way he's played 118 H.HL game. he's been up long ago. That's a good point. Too small for the Western League. It's not going to work.
Starting point is 00:58:43 Goalie of the year. Okay, well, fine. Maybe it's going to be okay. But maybe it was just one year. Goalie of the year. Second year in a row in the Western League. Fine, but you know what? When he gets to the pros,
Starting point is 00:58:54 real men like very different than junior. Not going to happen. Rookie. Goalie of the year, H.L. Okay, this guy's pretty good. Maybe it's the system. I know the coach is getting a lot of love. HL MVP and goalie of the year.
Starting point is 00:59:09 That's a four-year run that's never happened. No. He's been too good for every league he's played in, period. And a great comment from Washington here, sorry, Rhett, the best part of the game last night, the fans went nuts with the howls when he got called, either A, replacing validity, R, B, that shorthand a breakaway save.
Starting point is 00:59:28 The fans already love this kid. Well, and you should. There's more than enough reason to be excited. and the only negative side would be, how do you continue to do that at that pace? Like, what are we talking about? It's going to be a tough league to be the goalie of the year this year if he's up. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:47 He's got a late start. Is it a letdown if he's not MVP of the league this year? No. If he graduates this year, I think fans will be happy. Also, I know the Saddleum is not the newest, but maybe we could find this old janky mascot thingy and bring it to Calgary. This is in Sudbury, rats, where the wolves have to make a score. They bring out the wolf over the ice.
Starting point is 01:00:14 It's terrible. We need this in the dome after a big save. I don't think we do. I think that's terrible. That's a lot like the stupid wranglers. The dancing weird horse dancer. No, I want, we can, let's listen, we don't need to copycat. We've got a great thing ahead of us.
Starting point is 01:00:34 Let's get creative folks. Bring some ideas to the table. And to your point, I think it was maybe even last year this summer. There's already the fans are howling after saves. What was that stupid toy we had in the old studio? Why don't we have? There's no bobblehead. Here you go.
Starting point is 01:00:57 Turn them on. He's played three games. We're already in love. If I had to guess what jerseys they'd sell the most of between now and the end of the year, I would say Zary and Wolf. Any other candidates? No, Wolf will dominate. Zari's been good, but people love
Starting point is 01:01:12 goaltenders. They love goalies, man. Love them. Wow, they're smart enough to know that, oh, these guys might be important. You think goalies are important? I've heard. There was a guy at the game last night. Let's see if he was important. Dropping the puck, ceremonial phase out.
Starting point is 01:01:28 Look at that, Bernie. She's going good. He was a good goalie? So if he was good, then his teams must have, oh, two Stanley Cups and a Con Smyth in one of them. Yeah, that does sound important, right? Good point. Look on that.
Starting point is 01:01:43 What a stud. Do that. He makes Wolf look like he's 6'6 too. Ernie can do it's Stoke in Wolf. Love you, Mike. Let's peek at the gauntlet run. This is the murderous 15-game stretch, although I think this is just the first 13.
Starting point is 01:01:58 There's like an Anaheim, L.A. That follows those two Florida teams at the bottom. Good start, Rhett. three and one back-to-back losses and now a Carolina club coming in. A wounded animal coming in. It'll be a tired animal. I'll tell you that. I don't know what they're going to look like tonight against Edmonton.
Starting point is 01:02:14 Evanton has had five days off, I believe. But Carolina will be playing their third game in four nights on the road at the dome tomorrow. If you have to play the hurricanes, that's probably the way to do it. It was looking real good at 3-1. Now I'm less. A little more skeptical. Because this is the softest part left. You've got a tired Carolina club, a Jersey team that hasn't figured out net mining yet.
Starting point is 01:02:44 And then you've got three games and four nights on the road against good teams. Colorado, very good, Vegas, very good. Minnesota undefeated with a new coach. They look very good last night, Rad. Yeah. And then Tampa, Florida. Yeah, just the- You feel like you need a couple of wins here, to be honest with you.
Starting point is 01:03:01 Let's get that Wolf Howlin, man. Okay. We'll move. standings look like this. Wild card not as close as we once thought. We're not back to 460 percentage. I wondered if you were going back to the reverse but not quite. I've looked. It's just you can't, the NHL
Starting point is 01:03:22 stupid app, they can't store it by points percentage. So I'll figure something out. But they have the eighth worst points percentage in the NHL. So you if the draft was tomorrow and everything went by the numbers in the draft lottery, you would select eighth overall. I would take that,
Starting point is 01:03:40 Rhett, would you? Top 10, that's, you can do good there. Last night, why do you want to pick in the top 10? Well, you can pick a player like a Hughes. You definitely want to collect players like Hughes's. The tall one, that's Luke. He scored last night. The one in the black jersey,
Starting point is 01:03:58 that's Quinn. He had two helpers, Rhett. And on the right was Jack, he had a three point night. That's six points for the three brothers last night in the Hughes Bowl in Vancouver. Isn't that nice? Encribla.
Starting point is 01:04:11 Are they in the second greatest hockey family territory or not quite yet? Because we know the greatest Viking Alberta. I don't know. I guess if he had up Wayne Gretzky and his brother, it's probably the best duo of.
Starting point is 01:04:28 There's always that argument. It's got to be three. It can't be, it's got you. Three's tough. Yeah. Exactly. Like the Sidene twins, that's unreal. You got two Hall of Famers.
Starting point is 01:04:37 or whatever. That's thousand-ish points. That's impressive stuff. But three is hard to pull off. It's good stock there, the Hughes family. Kings did it, man. It looked like they were screwing it up. We told you all they need to do was to win, to tie
Starting point is 01:04:53 the NHR record for consecutive road wins to start a season. Ten in a row while the visitors this year, they were down three nothing. Three nothing to Columbus Reds. Sleeping. It is the, The first three-gole third period comeback of the year.
Starting point is 01:05:11 Phoenix Coplay was in net, and there is all kinds of heat on the blue jackets, minimal minutes for Ventili, for Kent Johnson, for Eurocheck, all their young players basically got benched. What are you doing, guys? You're not good. The kids are your future. That coach really seems like he's floundering as to what approach to take. The whole organization is when you factor in the app, and the desperation from the GM and then
Starting point is 01:05:41 Pascal Vincent coaching like it's game seven. It's not. There's a house cleaning coming for sure. There's got to be. Who do you know in OHIO? Because there'll be some job availability there real quick, I'm thinking. Yeah, you don't have to be from Ohio.
Starting point is 01:05:56 They'll take anyone. It just helps if you have good contact there. Good source. Maybe you know the owner. No. Jeff Rimmer. Okay. That's the broadcaster. That's helpful a little bit. Jody Shelley, you know, Jody?
Starting point is 01:06:13 This is Lane Lambert, the head coach of the New York Islanders. He's not happy. They blew a lead to the worst team in hockey to San Jose sharks. We had the game under control with eight and a half minutes left. To lose that hockey game is sin. Sin. Forgive me, father. I've sinned.
Starting point is 01:06:35 Like, he's not trying to be disrespectful to the sharks. Everyone knows what the sharks are doing this year. They're going to be last in the standings and they're going to hope to win a draft lottery. That's, uh, to blow a third period lead against the sharks is sin. They were up four to one. They were four to one. Four to one, uh, after a power play goal with at the 827 mark of the third period. Oh, dear.
Starting point is 01:07:06 LeBanks first of the year at 1155 hurdle back to back Banks first of the year. Oh my God. I know. And then Eklund in overtime sinks their battleship. Oof. There's a team that might be selling. They're actually in a playoff spot, believe it or not.
Starting point is 01:07:28 Look at the islanders? Yeah, I believe so. I'll pull it up right now. I'm just scanning this morning. They were hot garbage. They are by points percentage out, by one spot, and by straight points they're in. It's them, Washington and Toronto fighting, sorry, them the Devils in Toronto fighting for two wildcots. Did you see Elaine, just the pitcher?
Starting point is 01:07:54 The still tells the whole story. This man just commit a sin. He's just sitting there. Completely disgruntled. Can you show it again? I looked away, Jack. I didn't get to see it. It's, um, the posture says.
Starting point is 01:08:09 is it all. There's my lane. Come on. Can't play. Can't play. No way. The socks are good. I don't know if you can see it in that angle.
Starting point is 01:08:22 No. Oh, he's not happy. That is not a happy coach. Well, he's got Lou breathing down his neck. I was just going to say, do you think Lou called him? Hey, I, hey, come up for a quick chat. We blew a three goal lead to the sharks. Tonight, what are we looking at?
Starting point is 01:08:44 Let's see the slate here. not too busy, not too light. Four games, the perfect amount. Stars, Panthers, that's two cup contenders. Bolts, penguinos, okay. Blues and Nights and, hey, look at that. Edmonton back after a five-day break. Hosting Carolina, who will be in Calgary tomorrow.
Starting point is 01:09:08 Don't not fit any. Schedule maker flames on second half of the back-to-backed it. it evens out over the year. Don't worry, Edmonton. It's going to be okay. Some crazy things happening in baseball, Rhett. Very crazy things. Steve Phillips is a major league baseball insider.
Starting point is 01:09:26 Now, he was on a Toronto morning show, but he did say this. I would personally think the Blue Jays are the favorites to land him right now. I would give them a greater than 50% chance of landing him. Him is not some scrub. It's maybe the greatest baseball player ever, Shohay Otani. Are you kidding me?
Starting point is 01:09:50 Please, rats. Please. Please. Oh, AIs already done it. AI, look at AI. It looks beautiful. It's so much better than the Stinking Angels jersey.
Starting point is 01:10:04 Gorgeous. Maple East. Boy, AI's getting good. By the way, I found that Alberta thing that you referenced yesterday on the show. We're going to have a lot together. We're going to watch it. Let's come up real quick here.
Starting point is 01:10:15 We got one more Otani note. What do we got in Otani? Yeah, here it is. This is great. I don't know, Curtis, but I'm kind of with him. Dear Rogers, please feel free to have an Otani and Soto line charge on my phone bill, if that's what it takes. Yes.
Starting point is 01:10:28 Yeah, 10 bucks a month. We can do this together. Let's go. Now, if you add a second line and the Otani charge, the monthly bill comes to. Christine Sinclair played a final game in a Canadian uniform last night. the greatest female soccer player ever is a Canadian icon, and she got a rousing response when she left the game after about an hour. It was a friendly against Australia.
Starting point is 01:10:58 Matilda's. Matilda. And, Rhett, if you look, that's BC Place. They renamed it Christine Sinclair Place for the day. SC Place instead of BC Place. Look at the crowd. Do you want to guess? how many people were there?
Starting point is 01:11:17 This is far from empty. How many it hoped? Well, if you guessed 48, 112. Nice. You would be exactly correct. That's bigger than any crowd. I think the lions have had since like the 2000, the double zeros.
Starting point is 01:11:35 That is incredible. Vancouver, tip of the cap to you. That's how you send off a great. Holy. 48,000, right? She's doing quit. She's played for a long time. She scored a lot of goals.
Starting point is 01:11:49 I don't, all the time's undefeated, right? I guess. Here we go. Somebody asked AI to make a picture of an Albertan boy, and thus began a lovely little dance with the artificial intelligence. All right.
Starting point is 01:12:09 There's an Alberta boy. I don't mind that red. Rocky's in the background. That's some denim. Beautiful. But let's try a little harder. AI. Come on now.
Starting point is 01:12:17 Oh, yes. Ropren, farm, denim, flad. A little more place. Well, we've got a flag. Now we've got a rodeo going. The mountains are bigger, right? More. More.
Starting point is 01:12:33 Wow. There we go. What? Oil rig. Some sort of a petrochemical plant. Now it looks like a stampede poster. Yes, it does. The dinosaur at the bottom?
Starting point is 01:12:46 What's going on? here. No, a hockey's there. I don't know that the pancakes are all burning, but Jane?
Starting point is 01:12:56 So, yeah, he's wearing a VR riding a T-R. There is a lot of dinosaurs that were to, right? He's flying
Starting point is 01:13:07 outside of power plants. I don't get it. I think we've almost reached a... He's a wizard now. He looks like he's an Avenger. Now,
Starting point is 01:13:17 he's an Avenger. That Will Farrell one, MegaMind. He's Megamind. AI doesn't say no. You just keep asking. It'll keep working. Just like you and me. Just working. I was thinking that with you today when you forgot to bring your computer to the office. Well, I got all the other gear down here, and apparently I took the... I must have taken it home. Did you have the original Nintendo, the Nintendo Entertainment System, the NES?
Starting point is 01:13:46 We rented it. You remember Mario? right? We could be used. One player or two player. Louie do come in. Coins, you go down the tubes, right? Like 10 instruments already. I didn't realize there was so many members of the percussion family. Fourteen, 14 different percussion instruments there. That's wildly impressive. You could have sent people to Mars and back and built a space station there with the amount of energy taken. Instead, we can. covered Mario. That's time well spent right there by that person.
Starting point is 01:15:30 What an accomplishment. Hey, it made the show. Can't be that bad. Speaking of making the show, when you're in trouble and it's a near accident, you've got to have your friends nearby you saving you. I'm sure this happened to you at the barrette, whether it was you or Razor, maybe me at that thing we did, where you remember the hockey teams and the one guy that's threatening to fight me.
Starting point is 01:15:50 You got to be there to protect your buddies and help them when they're in a tough spot. Let's have a look. Oh, I got it orange. He's falling rats and his buddy is right there to make sure his beer does not spill as his friend. Good grab. See? That's what friends are for. You can't let that beer spill.
Starting point is 01:16:13 I got that for everybody. You'll recover. And finally, thank you to the a million people that sent this to me on Twitter. I had it yesterday, but we're spreading out our kangaroo news for the third day in a row. We got Ruse on the loose. Look at this thing. He wants a fight rat. Oh.
Starting point is 01:16:37 Doesn't sound nice at all. No. These herbivores you're telling me? If this thing ate flesh, they would have taken over the world over. They're horrified. Just taking drivers off the side? Dummy. I was going to say, don't they have golf clubs to defend themselves?
Starting point is 01:16:58 This Rue takes a couple once they get to the other side of the cart here. And he doesn't give a shit. It's like, bang, right there. Bang! Don't care. You're done. Down you go. Oh.
Starting point is 01:17:10 You know, the last clip was about buddies. I'm not sure about this guy's buddies. Yeah, one's filming and the other's on the cart. Like, hello guys. Like grab a sandwich and help your pal. Yeah, get involved here. I'm outgunned. You saw the claws of these things.
Starting point is 01:17:26 That guy's an ass hat. They don't like them. Look at him. He's like, oh, I'll just put my hand out here. Oh, he didn't listen. Sorry, I tried. It's on the cart. A foot away.
Starting point is 01:17:35 Help your buddy. These animals, man. Before we start a barn burner, thought kangaroos were cute. We've learned so much. Can't stand them. Disgusting. Gross. I hope Boom comes back with a kangaroo tattoo. Are we going to start a GoFundMe?
Starting point is 01:17:57 I will fund it. If Boom sends us a picture of a kangaroo tattoo that he wants to get, I'm happy to pay. What's your budget? American dollars. I got to see the picture. Okay. Right? Like I want to know what's the detail, like how deeps it going? There's no budget. Of all the kangaroo things, what do you want the kangaroo doing? Because you could just get a side profile kangaroo boring.
Starting point is 01:18:22 But we've got a better relationship with kangaroos than that in terms of like, we've seen some shit. We know they're heinous. You know what? He needs to ask AI for a kangaroo tattoo picture. Okay. Good ideas for kangaroo tattoos. Jack, could we work on this for? Tomorrow we'll send it to boom. We'll do some. Yeah. Yeah, tomorrow he loves it. Good.
Starting point is 01:18:45 Thumbs up from Jack. That's it. That's your Pinda Report for Village Honda. From now, through the holidays, like any time. All the way. Lots of new inventory coming in. Retail prices, MSRP.
Starting point is 01:18:58 That's where you is. That's great. That's what you want. And then on top of that, a bunch of pre-owned vehicles as well, over 70 on site and up to 400 in the dealer group. Start your automotive adventures at Village Honda or Village Honda or Villeux.
Starting point is 01:19:11 VillageHonda.com. You can find them in the Northwest Auto Mall. Buddy, it's time. Is it time? Are we ready? We're good to launch. Everything's good. Jack, give me the thumbs. It is. Okay. Last year, we did something amazing. It was very special. We raised a lot of money for a great cause in our city. And I give the old Boomcat a lot of credit. He said, if we're doing this thing, if we're doing a show, we have to have a Christmas charity. We have to raise. money to give back to the community. He's like, yep, that's absolutely right. And boom, absolutely spearheaded this thing last year. We have a check above us in the studio. It hangs every day and year because we're proud of it. $20,9,9.0027. Went to closer to home, your adopt a family
Starting point is 01:19:57 program around the Christmas holidays. We impacted a lot of families in Calgary, Red, and we did it because, A, we got great listeners that helped bid on auction items and incredible partners and clients that put together some unbelievable experiences that our listeners and viewers could bid on. We are back today with the unveiling 2.0, our second annual top shelf elf auction. It is presented by our great pals at McLeod Law. Would you expect anything less from our buddies at McLeod Law? Peter Klein and company, McLeod-dashlaw.com at McLeodlaw, LLC on social media. We know they're the Calgary crew.
Starting point is 01:20:40 got legal issues. Things might not be going as you want, but certainly you go to McLeod Law if you need some help. They are in, they are our presenting sponsor of the top shop, top shelf elf, excuse me, charity auction in support of closer to home. Very good. Excited about this. Love it, love it, love it, love it. Ret, what do you remember about last year? Do you remember what we did, a photo? I know that You guys threw you visiting in on a few things that completely was unnecessary because nobody was bidding on it. They're like, oh, go to the Flames game with Boomer and Pinder and golf. It was like, why are you ruining these people's prizes?
Starting point is 01:21:23 Like, you're just in it for the freebies. So we are in the process of launching today. Jack, you can jump on right now. It's going to be in a matter of minutes, I believe, that this will go live. I would hope by noon we've got the links ready to go. going to be multiple ways that you can get involved. We're going to walk through some of the incredible packages that we've got put forth. I'm correct on that front, right?
Starting point is 01:21:44 We're good to go in terms of talking about these packages. Yeah, we have all the packages ready to go. Okay, so we will tell you when everything is up and live. We're doing final testing online. You can go to Nationgear.com. Where all this is going to happen. And we aren't going to, like, slam the door shut tonight. You're going to have over a week here.
Starting point is 01:22:00 We want to get the money into the hands of the folks that close at a home in time to get this Christmas campaign up and running. You can't give them the money on the 24th. That doesn't allow them time to get these families with the Adopted Family Program set for Christmas. So we do have a tighter timeline than last year, but we're going to kick some ass and let's start with our first item. ATB Financial, our good buddy, Johnny Winwick.
Starting point is 01:22:22 How about this? This is the press-level hockey experience. This is actually two retro. There are two games. This is the March 16th game against Montreal. 25 press-level tickets. Hockey team. work event, Christmas party, St. Patrick's Day celebration, whatever you want it to be.
Starting point is 01:22:42 This is April 18th against San Jose. I believe that's the last game of the year. Have some fun in the spring with your whole crew, whether that's friends, work, hockey team, anything else. It's that support group you go to on Tuesday nights. Bring them all to the game. Bring everybody. Second item, it's the same thing. It's a different game.
Starting point is 01:23:00 It's not the April 18th against San Jose. It's a game against the Montreal Canadiens, which is always one of the, hottest tickets in the regular season here in Calgary. No doubt about it. So huge thanks to ATB Financial on that front. We've got our Barn Burner Experience back. There's a we've got the, there's your San Jose.
Starting point is 01:23:19 We got that. Yeah. Very good. Barn burner experience, watch an episode of the show live in studio. Stock up on some Barn Burner and Flames Nation merch. And we'll take you out to lunch afterwards. Can I interrupt?
Starting point is 01:23:31 Yeah, please do. Which studio? Because like Booms home studio, People might love to go to Boom's home studio. I think people would be Jack to go to Booms. Then he could make them buns and... I think one person would be really excited to go to Boom Studio. It's boom. That's who.
Starting point is 01:23:44 It's going to be the main studio in Marta Lou Pratt, and we might even be able to time it when you're back in town. If you win the package, we'll figure this all out. But come watch the show live. Join us for lunch afterwards. It's going to be a blast, right? Good. You missed the dinner last year.
Starting point is 01:23:59 It was our buddy Mark, who he's tied in a bunch on the show. He's got us all kinds of... great little intel. He's been wearing the jerseys. He had the Barnburner hoodie on and a Seattle game. He's got us linked up with Darcy Hortichuk, who you're going to be hearing from in your moments. This is cool. That's another item we're doing. Let's move to the next, Jacko. Our third different item, I guess fourth, if you include the two different games for ATB. The Bontan meat market, look at this. A whole hind quarter of premium locally grown beef. That's a lot of beef. frat.
Starting point is 01:24:36 Summer's coming. Like you are set. You are just absolutely set. Load up and whatever it is. Stews, burgers, steaks. You're set. Now, did you not used to like split a half cow with someone you'd order? Yes.
Starting point is 01:24:53 I go to Bontan and do almost exactly that. It's a move. Every month. Thanks for our great buddy, Greg, by the way, Ask her at Tomorrow. Get your questions in. Ask Red at Flames Nation. that will be one of the items that we will have up for auction as well let's move on we've got a bunch of
Starting point is 01:25:11 the local sports teams excited to be involved with this year's one of the new packages is the calgary surge experience rat did you get your lugans to a basketball game the summer when you were back no you did not okay we got boom out to a game i was very impressed we got them out of the house they play at winsport rat except here's a little wrinkle from the surge this year their home opener at the dome. So here's what it is. Season opener at the dome, four tickets and for Surge
Starting point is 01:25:42 jerseys. Yeah, that's how you do it right there. The big building, the big game, decked out in the jerseys, great logo, great gear and all the way to the final last year for the surge, a great club as well. Excited for that experience and that package to be bid upon.
Starting point is 01:25:58 Next, what do we got? Cavalry FC. They did it last year. They're doing it again. four tickets, parking pass, scarves, and hang out with Tommy post game. He does his postgame media press conference, and then you're going to have a little meet and greet. You can chat with Tommy. You can get a little tour.
Starting point is 01:26:17 Tommy's very nice. Complement his hair, anything's possible. That was a fun one last year. The foot soldiers, cavalry fans, very excited about that one. Very cool. We've also got the bull busting is back. This is maybe the most difficult thing out there, Rhett. It's sold out already.
Starting point is 01:26:35 As soon as they're done one year, the next year is sold out. Cody does multiple days of bull busting at the Grey Eagle. We have got tickets to the event for you, for VIP tickets for the Thursday, July 4th event, access to the pre and post party, Grey Eagle Events Center, VIP seating, parking, food, drink vouchers, and meet and greet with the world champion bull rider himself. Cody Snyder. So cool last year. We had great winters last year. We had a great night. A bit of rain.
Starting point is 01:27:08 But if it rains, you just go inside and watch on the big screen. It stops or any, you go back outside, watch the bowls. It was great. That might be our biggest ticket right there, Rhett. That is something. Although, look at this. Stamps are in as well. Big thank you to Jay McNeil and the Stamp Peters for sending this over. Four tickets to the home opener. Also, tailgating parking pass. Great game field access and a team signed jersey. Love that. Walk in the field's got to be cool. It's the same as last year. You've got to do the bontan and this one.
Starting point is 01:27:39 Then he got a nice combination. Grilled, get all the food. How much would a hind quarter of a cow be? How big would the tailgate be? It would have a good time. You're going to have one hell of a party. Very popular. Dozens and dozens and dozens and dozen.
Starting point is 01:27:58 Very popular with your friends. That's if that was even possible. Oh! Look at this. Looks happy. Doesn't he? I don't know if he can hear us. Hi, ladies.
Starting point is 01:28:16 Dean, how are you? You sound great. Yeah. Thanks. Is that a shirt or you got a sunburn? How's it going, everyone? We're doing, man. We're unveiling the top shelf elf, our second.
Starting point is 01:28:37 annual charity Christmas campaign. Yeah. Awesome. Well done. Love it. And I know you love the stampeters. So this would be one that you'd be pumped up for. Well, I have to worry about getting out bid, but last year, Bender just edged me out. So I've got money saved up for this year. Nice. Nice. Well, thanks for launching this thing. Just I don't want to get on the road. Keep going. You're doing great. Yeah, okay, good. I didn't know if you wanted to chat or hang out or go through with us. This is awesome. No, I saw you.
Starting point is 01:29:07 I don't want to talk about the flames in the wild on a Tuesday or whatever it was, but I'll talk about this. Yeah. Okay. So I'm happy to talk with this. Stamps are back. That's great. Now, storewall is in as well.
Starting point is 01:29:18 You're familiar with storewall, Dean. Is it right? They've done some work with you at your place. Is that right? They have. Mike has come by and helped me out. I got my garage done a few years ago and got some storewall. Retro, don't you have kind of the slot wall, storewall stuff going on in?
Starting point is 01:29:33 Oh, yeah. Yes, the garage is. You go into a garage without that when you have it, and you're like, what are you doing this garage? This is useful. If you want to be one of those guys where if you happen, the garage doors open and people walk by, it's like, gosh, your garage looks so great. I wish mine was so, it's storewall because they have the slot wall and then you just get the hooks and everything. It helps organize.
Starting point is 01:29:55 It's awesome. This is a great prize. Love it. Yeah. So let's get into the details a little bit here. You noted it's the stuff that goes right on the wall to help you organize your garage. we're talking different colors available, not to mention,
Starting point is 01:30:08 $500 worth of hooks, baskets, shelves, professionally installed within 75 clicks of Calgary. That's great. If you're Air Jury, your Okotaks, you're good. Professional organizing of the hooks to suit your needs. Thank you to storewall for jumping in. Walls that work, indeed. I'm embarrassed to have my garage door open dean.
Starting point is 01:30:26 If I'm, like, getting hockey here, I have to do it very quickly and I don't show my face to anyone. Merry Christmas, honey. You're going to want those hooks. You're going to want those hooks, you know, But actually, I've got, and on the other side of the garage, I've got just a strip, a strip of the slot wall, the storewall hung up. And then a couple of, it's almost like shelves and what they do, but it's like just the braces. And then I've got my blue bins hung up there.
Starting point is 01:30:51 So when we go open the garage door, recycling goes in this one, like your cans and milk jugs and that, it goes in the other. Awesome. Instead of having garage your garbage cans sitting on the floor and stuff, taking up a bunch of room. dunk, dunk up in the wall, fired in there. It's the way to go. Vina Nova is back. Dino, of course. It is that time of year.
Starting point is 01:31:12 You got to be thinking about jewelry. A lot of guys think about proposals. His and hers watches. One winner will get both watches. That would be pretty cool. His and hers. Nice. Big thank you to Justin and Vena Nova.
Starting point is 01:31:27 Impressive stuff over there. We were in there the other day, Retro. Dean, it was beauty. Yeah. Yeah, something, you know what? Something for, something for her. I'm guessing is what the way that would go. And then it's like, oh, did you get one too?
Starting point is 01:31:38 Well, I mean, you know. I mean, it was a pair. I just thought. It was more about you, bad. More about you, but I just couldn't say no. There's a couple of beauties to end here for very different reasons. I didn't ever think we'd be giving away these things. I didn't even know you could.
Starting point is 01:31:53 I thought they were too popular to give away. You, Canada to USA.com is a website and a company that helps Canadians travel to the U.S., get deals in the U.S. helps you with some logistics with travel, get deals on insurance, rental cards and such. How about this? The waste management open experience. Yes, that waste management open.
Starting point is 01:32:11 The crazy golf tournament in Phoenix, the incredible 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale. Are you kidding me? Four day passes for you going right into the jungle in the 16th stadium hall. I love it. We had Hordechevichuk. This is Darcy Hortichick's company.
Starting point is 01:32:29 He and I think another couple other guys. And right, they were talking to you about it. That time we had Darcy on. You come to the U.S., if you're living for a period, maybe you're spending the winter here, you're coming for a period of time, whatever it is. They just make the transition a little bit easier as far as currency and just did everything.
Starting point is 01:32:45 They take care of all that stuff for you. Anyway, it was Horticuk. We had him on the show one day. And he said, yeah, I've got some tickets here. And somehow he's like the kingpin of Scottsdale somehow. He should have a reality show because I would watch it. Yes. But he had, yeah, he's got.
Starting point is 01:33:01 this connection to so many things. Why don't I give you guys some tickets to waste management? We said, well, that'll be an unbelievable prize for the top shelf elf. So yeah, we did the, we, we kept them. We've had them in hiding for a few months. But here you go, a chance to get to the, the hole, the place to be at waste management. This is, you know what it is? It's priceless.
Starting point is 01:33:25 It's a price of price. And it's beyond golf. This is now a bucket lift sport slash entertainment event. It isn't about golf. It's about one of the craziest things you could do at a sporting event. I love it. And you've got to come up with your, you've got to get costumes. You got to have a get-up.
Starting point is 01:33:40 Yeah. Yeah, yeah. It's for you. You could do super troopers. You could be action heroes. There's lots of options, Dean. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:33:46 So this is very cool. This is awesome. Love that. Big thank you to Darcy and the folks at Canada to USA.com. Last for now. Now, we're going to be sprinkling in a few more over the next week and a half or so. But for now, look at this. Origin Brewing,
Starting point is 01:34:00 our good pals out in Strathmore. How about this experience? A private tour of the malting and brewing facility. If you ever wonder how beer is made, you want to see how it happens. It's pretty cool. Also, tap room tasting for six. And you'll be decked out with some origin,
Starting point is 01:34:17 malting and brewing swag. They got some great gear, man. I'm telling you, they're hoodies and t-shirts and hats. Phenomenal stuff and the tour and the tasting. All you got to do is figure out what hotel you're staying at in Strathmore. That's going to be a good night right there. Yeah, or get the $100 Uber, right? Is that what it is?
Starting point is 01:34:35 Yeah. Yeah, just get the $100, $250 with $250 round-and-trip Uber. It's a hell of a time at the tap room. I love it. Big thank you to Origin. We've had a bunch of our guys that weren't familiar with Origin, and now that we've got the Barber and Blonde going, and we've been talking about the great beer they make, they've gone out.
Starting point is 01:34:55 People are very excited. It's great beer. It's great people. It doesn't get better than that, Dino. So big thank you to, Sterling and Company out at Origin and Strathmore. So there it is. That is our first round of selections for the top shelf elf.
Starting point is 01:35:10 We'll be live and ready to rock and roll on nationgear.ca. If not at this moment in probably mere minutes or I would think noon at the latest. Very, very cool, Dino, that we've got this off the ground again. Thank you for being a big driving force behind this thing in the first place. And we got a big number to chase this year. We just shy of $21,000 last year. And, well, and thanks to you for, obviously, I'm gallivanting. But yeah, to everybody, Maddie and Jared and Kennedy and everybody who's been working hard behind the scenes to get this thing going.
Starting point is 01:35:43 It is at the very spirit of it. It's not about how much time or what kind of thing. It's about raising money last year. There were, and it doesn't sound like a ton. When I first heard, there were 19 families that were going to be getting. aid because they take the money and then it's it's some gift cards it's food vouchers and this sort of thing it's for families that otherwise just wouldn't have had a Christmas and then there's a tree and there's gifts and just everything and when I heard 19 families it's not it's not nothing obviously but
Starting point is 01:36:14 you think okay well maybe thought it would be more when you hear that there's hundreds of families and then not long after that we got a package sent to us from the families and they were Christmas cards or letters and And to see them how many kids had written letters or talked about what Christmas meant to them because of that and everything, it was an emotional thing. We all kind of took a few minutes to look at those cards. When you have that, when you have that many people, that amount of letters, you realize it's not about how much. If you affect one family, if one family wakes up on Christmas with some presence and just feeling good about things, then it's, worth it. So we appreciate all the sponsors for coming in and for everybody that will put a bid here
Starting point is 01:37:03 to nationgear.ca, just know that it's it is absolutely making a huge difference. And I think we will up that number again this year. And I think as we talked about at the time, for those of us that our parents, it's got to be a helpless feeling. And we're all very fortunate, but to look at Christmas and think I'm not going to be able to do anything. There's just not going to be gifts this year. As a parent who wants only the best for their kids, it's got to be heartbreaking. So you're giving gifts to the kids, but I would think that probably the greatest gift is for the parents that get to provide a Christmas for their kids that otherwise wouldn't have. So it's a great cause. We're happy to have closer to home back involved, and it feels like
Starting point is 01:37:49 it feels like the right thing to do, and I think it is the right thing to do. So buddies, we appreciate your help and we're going to do a big number this year. Thanks to you guys. Yeah, and a big thank you. Our presenting sponsor is McLeod Law. They are on board with us for this, Dino, and we've talked about their Calgary Roots. We've told you, you know, this is not a, hey, we opened our Calgary shop. No, no, this is a Calgary law firm that understands the people here and like the communities
Starting point is 01:38:11 they serve, McLeod Law, very diverse, and they share commitment to making a positive impact in Calgary. That's this right here, in a nutshell, whether it's business, personal, they're in it with you, professionals with a common goal, helping clients. clients meet their goals. Thank you to McLeodlaw, Peter and company for getting on and helping us launch the second annual. Good people.
Starting point is 01:38:35 Better than us again. Yeah, better than us. Better than us. Certainly better than three of us for sure. Maybe Jack. I don't know. Maybe Jack's a good guy. I can't tell yet.
Starting point is 01:38:45 I'm a good guy. Just the people know, the link is live. I'm going to put it in the chat here. We'll be in the podcast and YouTube description. And we'll also be pushing it out on social. after the show here. Thank you, Jack. That's awesome. I believe nationgear.com is where you're going to start, but there'll be a link if you're watching live right now, or as Jack said, in the show description, if you're streaming the program later. Dean, while I got you,
Starting point is 01:39:06 we aired a video with you going back and I guess just revisiting your visit to the hearing loss clinic. I thought you did a great job with the video. It was cool how you sort of explained what sounds were missing. You can now hear these birds chirping in the background, right? They're twittering. They're twittering. Yeah, the birds are twittering. I don't have them in right now. I got my other headphones in. But yeah, it's put the video together.
Starting point is 01:39:31 Yeah, that's what it is. Everything. Everything around you is different. You know, the air tastes better. It's air taste. Food smells better. Something like that. But no, it's if you've put up, if you've put off because, oh, geez, I'm not going to have to wear it here.
Starting point is 01:39:45 I don't know. I got these things. You're wasting your time. You're missing out on time where you could be having, you could just experiencing more, more conversations. better experiences, everything. And I've got to try to relay that. When you're in traffic, when you're watching a movie,
Starting point is 01:40:00 when you're in conversation, everything, everything is much, much better. And the hearing loss clinic are the very best at it. So, Roadsie, I know we're going to be doing some giveaways and stuff coming up here. So follow on social media. There's another company that does things for the right reason. So if you're not already, go on Twitter and on Instagram
Starting point is 01:40:20 and follow the hearing loss clinic, because there might be some chances for you to do it. some winning, some other things coming up here before. All santi claws come sliding down the old chimney, that fat bastard. You made a great point, too. Everyone's got things in their ears these days. It's like whether you're on the bus, walking your dog, at the gym, you know, driving. Right.
Starting point is 01:40:39 Where do you go? Everyone just got earbuds. Like, yeah, I don't think it's as isolating or it's like, oh my gosh, people look like, no, maybe 20 years ago. You might have felt that way, which is kind of a little silly. But now you're just fitting in if you got something on your ear. That's right. I just, I don't even think, I don't think even people look twice at all anymore. So, all of those, you know what, they are stigmas.
Starting point is 01:41:01 Stigmas. Get rid of them. Just get rid of all of them. So, you know what? All the cool kids are wearing them. That's what I'll tell you. All the cool kids got their hearing aids in now. What time is it over there?
Starting point is 01:41:13 You got a little glow on you. This is looking at all. We're three hours the other way. It's Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. I don't know if you guys have ever been here. I mean, can you get a load of what's going on here? See, I thought it was a theme room at West Ed for sure, but I'm way off. Yeah, it's a green screen.
Starting point is 01:41:31 Yeah, it's a green screen. No, I'd heard all kinds of terrible things. Redd, you've been to Prince Albert a bunch of times. You told me the place was a shit hole. I love this. Wow, we try to keep it hidden. We don't want people, a bunch of idiots rooted in it. I thought we were pals.
Starting point is 01:41:45 I thought you'd let me in on this. I'd have been coming here every year. So, Prince Albert. Why wouldn't you? No, we're three hours the other way, so we're just coming up here on 9 a.m. How's the fam? Everyone enjoying it. Good start to this well-deserved time off.
Starting point is 01:42:00 Yeah, everyone's good. Nothing really too exciting to tell you about yet. We did, we went, you know, we went snorkeling yesterday. Got a snorkele. And we might be doing some night snorkeling coming up on the weekend. Lumincent. Norgalus. Nanta rays or something.
Starting point is 01:42:22 Mantra rays, can they kill you? Manta rays are those, the killing kind of? Anything, can. A crocodile hunter, wasn't it? Wasn't it a ray that got the crocodile hunter hunter? Look out, boom. Yeah, it's the stingray. Is that the same thing?
Starting point is 01:42:32 A rays is a stingray and the Ray? Didn't they have those at the Calgary Zoo? You could come in and touch the, you could go in and touch the stingrays or the mantarays or whatever, and they were there for about nine days and then somebody got sick or one of them died
Starting point is 01:42:44 and they had to wheel them out, kind of like the pandas or whatever it was. Yeah, no, don't need that. Can't have anything nice. fucking zoos. So yeah, I think we're going to go, I'm going to have a Mantaire kill me on the weekend. So that's
Starting point is 01:42:57 also. It's a good way to go. Yeah, we've had a good run. Yeah, what the hell? What's up with like, so Markstrom, I leave town, I've been gone for a few days, Markstrom got his hand shut off. They were terrible. They were terrible. They were terrible.
Starting point is 01:43:11 They've been all year, maybe. Now, do you think the, how's the viewing time over there? Is that a good time to watch a game? mid-afternoon, happy hour kind of thing? I'll be honest, when I'm not there, there's no good time for it. To watch the wild and the flames.
Starting point is 01:43:31 No, there's no good time a day. I was also in Prince Albert when it was the epic three-nothing collapse that the Leafs had against the Bruins in game seven. So that would have been almost 10 years ago. And if you're outside all day in Prince Albert, you could use a little, let's just go inside and grab a cocktail and cool off for a bit. I think it's just perfect.
Starting point is 01:43:56 But to your point, if it feels like work, you shouldn't be doing it, Dean. I can't advise that as your physician. I mean, I encourage you not to do that. So is the gauntlet run officially back on now? Sorry, are we back? 500. They're three and three. They're three and three.
Starting point is 01:44:13 Must win scenarios. You know what, though? Biggest crowd of the night. Wolf coming in for Vlodar. there's the gauntlet run for you dude look at that now i mean boy and his new jersey they've kind of turned it around right they haven't got the goaltending side figured yet they won six five last night and allowed three in a row to tie the game after having a huge lead
Starting point is 01:44:36 Carolina's no fun Colorado's good the Colorado Vegas Minnesota gauntlet is three games and four nights in different cities and the wild haven't lost under john heinz yet the other two probably win their division that's and didn't we say that. And didn't we say that that the wilder shit, but by the time the flames play them, they'll have it all figured out. And sure enough,
Starting point is 01:44:57 they gun, and they bring in John Hines, who's apparently Scotty Bowman or something. So, yeah, just as soon as the wild get it figured out, the flames will get them twice in a couple weeks. That's right. They'll probably eight no by then.
Starting point is 01:45:09 Yeah, that's about right. Well, this is good for Conroy. See, now Conroy can turn his brain back off again. If they're going to lose a bunch, like, okay, we're just selling.
Starting point is 01:45:15 Okay, so we're just back to sell mode now. All right, that's pretty good. Yeah, A lot of sales conversations, not a lot of buying chats with our insider today. Dino, you don't understand. As it should be.
Starting point is 01:45:26 As it should be, right? And we, again, we told you in the first place, didn't we? Let's get to the end of December. Let's get to Christmas. Whatever it is, the 23rd. Let's get to December 23rd. Let's see. Are you buying or selling?
Starting point is 01:45:37 It'll be pretty clear. And we're on track that it's going to be pretty clear by the 23rd, what they are. Eighth from the bottom by points percentage. So would you take picking eighth over all this summer, Dina? Does that make you happy? Or do you think you can chisel that down to six and five if you're selling? Like, are you okay with eight? Well, and you know what I'm going to do?
Starting point is 01:45:55 I'm going to take that hugely important third rounder from 2026 or whatever the hell it is that we got in this Adorov deal. I'm going to throw that in, maybe get up to like seven or six or five. We throw that pick in there too. Click. Yeah. No, I saw I was keeping an eye on you guys. You guys hate the Elias Lindholm now. Hey, why do you hate Elias Lindholm, Tinder?
Starting point is 01:46:18 What's going on? Always have. I was waiting to spot him, and then the third period came. He scored twice. Oh, yeah, I saw that. I was at the game and taking a look. And Elias, Lindholm, he's straight shit. And then he gets two goals in the third.
Starting point is 01:46:29 So I guess that's okay. But I still, you're not wrong. You know what? I kind of fought you harder on it in the summer team, but I'm with where you were at, which is he's a really, really, really great support piece. He's not a centerpiece. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:46:46 And it's hard to, it's hard to, invest big into that kind of player. There are stars in the league and maybe they never come available and they maybe never come available to you, right? But that doesn't mean, okay, well, let's take the same investment that other teams give their elite players and give it to this guy because it's the best we can get. I don't want that. And we've talked about that for a long time.
Starting point is 01:47:10 Just because you can agree, don't take 10 million or 9 million a year, which is what you pay studs and give it to this guy because maybe he'll stay. no there's a better way to use that nine million dollars i think on top of what you might get for him but by all means if if you do want to get out of town elias play better it would help everyone including you on your next extension elias if you really want to haul ass and be their best player yeah so on the flip side is it's frustrating it is kind of depressing to watch games like last night where they're just not very good it's all it's all coming together it's all it's all it's all
Starting point is 01:47:48 all for a greater cause. A greater good is coming down the road. So, you know. Let's check in on Friday. I think we'll probably have another item or two to add to the auction. It's live. It's up and running on NationGear.ca. Right now.
Starting point is 01:48:03 And we'll also probably have, what will it be? The first crew shutout for Dustin Wolf will be, so Friday morning you can react to the timing for you? Something like that. Yeah. Yeah, we'll work on that. Okay. I know there's a wine tasting just outside of PA.
Starting point is 01:48:18 on Thursday night. So I might be a little worse for wear on Friday morning. I would stick to the whites up there. They're more known for their whites in P.A. They are not known for their whites in PA. No, you're not right. It's the opposite, actually. Dino, good to see you alive and well.
Starting point is 01:48:39 Enjoy the sunshine and, you know, a big shout out tourism, Saskatchewan. What a spot. Don't let everybody know. Don't spread the news too wide. I know. Land of the living skies. Brins Albert, Saskatchew.
Starting point is 01:48:56 Yeah. Thanks, buddies. Grab me a shirt if you see one, hey? I'll reimburse it. Yeah, we'll do. That's a better mood than we last saw him. That's great. It's true.
Starting point is 01:49:09 There was a giggle. I'm happy. He's happy. Ask Redis tomorrow. We do it for our good buddy, Greg, at Bonton. he, of course, has got the, what do you call it, the hind quarter of beef for the auction. He's going to be thrilled to give that away and raise a bunch of dough for closer to home. He also wants people to have you on your toes tomorrow for questions.
Starting point is 01:49:33 It's Wednesday. Tomorrow's Ask Ret. We have special guests in the studio. So don't mess about. Askrette at Flamesnation.com. I believe is the email address. You can also reach out on the socials and we'll funnel those all together for an Ask Ret segment tomorrow. set up and ready for that. Are you giving bets away?
Starting point is 01:49:56 Are you still wait until Friday's football picks for to do the bets? I like to wait. I was listening to some deep analysis sport in the NFL stuff. You're a big practice report guy. It's a big day, Wednesday. You want to see who's limited, who's a full participant. Are you playing? Are you not?
Starting point is 01:50:13 Yeah, I need the details. Betway, they're a partner of ours, 19 plus Ontario only. the responsible way with Betway. I've got a couple bigger pitcher NHL bets. And what do I mean by bigger pitcher? Well, there'll be some daily bets that include multiple games. And it's just less of a this game, one event. But like, hey, what if these two things both happen tonight?
Starting point is 01:50:34 One thing I always like to happen is McDavid scoring. He's coming off five days. Carolina said just dreadful netminding this season. I love McDavid to score tonight. Jack Eichl, he's playing St. Louis. Ikel's been great this year. If they both score plus 400. who love that number and I'm going to take the lightning against the penguins as the highest scoring team tonight there are eight games it stars panthers penguins lightning knights blues canes oilers but Tampa's been putting some crooked numbers up lately Kutcherov's having a monster year retro Calgarian braiden points still great we saw headman thousand games getting involved I like plus 260 for Tampa to have a big night yeah well
Starting point is 01:51:22 I mean, you're the expert on these day-to-day picks, so I would trust you on that. Well, hey, listen, I did great the other day. What did the Pittsburgh, Galuzin and Philly, nailed that. Winnipeg one at home, nailed that two for two. We hit our Evan Ingram anytime touchdown prop. Dean was making fun of me for on Twitter.
Starting point is 01:51:39 Oh, he said zero touchdowns all year. We predicted it. Jack, that was nails. That's brilliant. Thank you. Appreciate that. So that's our Betway bets for Betway. Bet the responsible way with Betway,
Starting point is 01:51:51 whether you're on the phone, whether it's a desktop, wherever you're, whatever screen you're looking at, get the Betway app for it. DoorDash tonight, I want you to pick a couple maybe dishes and or items that would match the schedule. DoorDash makes it really easy, right? Because let's say you need groceries and you're hungry or G's like I'd love to get
Starting point is 01:52:14 this household item as well. With DoorDash, they can do that in all in one big swoop. You don't need three separate deliveries. It's called Double Dash. Starting point is 01:52:41 and 25% off your first order over $15. That haul ass. That is great. I've got the sports. You're on food, okay? All right. 5.30 tonight. It's the heat at the raptors. Now, you have been part of the North in the past.
Starting point is 01:52:57 The heat, I'm thinking you can go something spicy here. I've watched the heat. Well, I door-dashed it last weekend, and I would do it again tonight for sure was the Korean fried chicken and rice. It was phenomenal. Now, is there a level of spice there? What are we talking? I think you could choose. I don't remember what I did. Usually I go medium the first time I order from a place. because I don't know what, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:53:22 Every place can be a little bit different. So I usually go medium to get established and then work off of that. Yeah. And so now that you've done it, would you go to hot or keep it at medium? I would go up one. Yeah. Very good. That's your appetizer, first course, let's call it.
Starting point is 01:53:37 The second one on what's on the menu is the Keynes in Edmonton. A lot of time off for the Oilers. And the exact opposite for Carolina will be playing their second time of a three and four stretch. So this is the first half of a back-to-back for the canes. They've been getting shitty gold center. They've got to figure that out. Maybe they're in town. They could kick the tires on a very lightly.
Starting point is 01:53:57 Take a guy with you. Yeah. They're not. Plan's already there. Save some bucks. Dundon, come on. You're listening. That's a 7.30 start up from the cultural capital.
Starting point is 01:54:06 Oilers slight favorites there. I mean, I'm definitely going with a cheesecake at that point. Oh, I like what you've done there. Yeah. Okay. The cheesecake is going to help balance the heat, right? Several things. settle things down a little bit.
Starting point is 01:54:21 I love cheesecake. Give me some cheesecake. You were in town and you didn't steal that huge thing of cheesecake. I know, I should have. There's still some in the fridge. What's our best before timeline on a cheesecake? That's a good question. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:54:34 I say Jack, test it out for us. Jack, could you hammer a slice for us today? Let us know. We need him at work tomorrow. He's got a big day tomorrow. He's got Afterburner and the main show. Yeah, there's lots going on tomorrow. I'll do it tomorrow.
Starting point is 01:54:47 Yeah, okay. During Afterburner, we'll give him to hammer a slice. I can't have them sick tomorrow. Very good. Reminder, Nation 25 is that code. Download that Door Dash app. Not just meals, fellas. You want flowers?
Starting point is 01:55:01 You need deodorants? I don't know what kind of pickle you're in, but they can help you at DoorDash. Get the app. Nation 25, the promo code for 25% off and free delivery of your first order of over $15. Love to see that. Not much left to do here, Rhett.
Starting point is 01:55:19 No, and my phone's dying. So if we're wrapping it up, probably a good time. That's a wrap. We'll see you tomorrow. We told you about the Hughes's last night, compining for six points. If there was a more famous hockey family,
Starting point is 01:55:33 if, hypothetically, we would have them in studio tomorrow. Huh. I'm going to need you with a fully charged phone and our computer. Hard to find. I might bring my computer, yeah. Yeah, that's probably a really good thing to do.
Starting point is 01:55:48 Final thought, Rhett. before we say goodbye. Anything else that's front and center? I need you to charge up. You have practice today? You're at the rink? At the rink already. Doing this, doing that. I got stiffly kids at home. Apparently illness is about town right now. So lots of that going around. Best of luck with the day. We'll see you tomorrow.
