Barn Burner: Boomer & Pinder with Rhett Warrener - Could Viggo Bjork Be Calgary's Guy At No. 6?? π€ Ft. Craig Conroy | BB Clips
Episode Date: June 20, 2026Boomer and Rhett are joined by Calgary Flames GM Craig Conroy as they discuss one of the most intriguing prospects in this year's NHL Draft: Viggo Bjork. With the Flames holding the sixth overall pick..., there's a growing debate about whether Bjork will even be available when Calgary is on the clock and whether he should be the selection if he is. While much has been made about his size, the guys explore whether that concern still matters in today's NHL, where skill, hockey sense and competitiveness often outweigh traditional measurements. Conroy shares his thoughts on the draft process, while the conversation turns to how teams evaluate smaller players and whether the league has finally moved past its obsession with size. Could Viggo Bjork be exactly the type of player Calgary needs, or is there too much risk at sixth overall? Vigo Bjork's name is, I feel like it's gotten some traction.
It's kind of one of those things you would appreciate as much as anybody.
The more time passes, you maybe start the second guess is, well, maybe I should dig more into this.
So I don't know, but it feels like maybe it was the world championships.
But 5-9-177 here at the Combine, he's maybe closer to 510.
He looked a little bigger than we thought he was going to, you know,
just reading some of the
teams and some of the reporters that talked to him.
He had a good U-A-T, a good U-20,
playing with men.
I guess how many times
just your viewings of Vigo Bjork
and what you see there in,
he's kind of tantalizing for a young Swedish centerman.
He is, you know, it's interesting,
a right shot.
I've seen him live five times, I think.
You know, I got to go to the World Juniors through to see him.
And then just to watch him,
I mean, and he shows he can do everything.
you know, he's not as flashies maybe.
Stenberg might have, you know,
he's got all the moves
and everything, but, you know, Vigo's in good
position, you know, Rhett would say
like he's, defensively, he's an easy
outlet pass, he makes the right play,
puts himself in good positions,
and the knock would be the size.
I mean, you know, but he's a
competitive guy and he's not,
he doesn't, he doesn't
shy away from anything, you know, I would say
that for sure. My, I harp
on Pinder about this, because he always still
talk he talks about size
like it's the 80s and early 90s
where if you were small you were screwed I don't get
the feeling that the league has that opinion
of kids anymore
is some of the difference of fact that
smaller guys back in the air used to play
a certain style speed fast skill
now everybody's doing that
so it's not so much that it's your size
it's that everyone's playing kind of the same style
a game and there's you know because 6-4
used to be oh I'm going to knock you about the head
yeah and 5-10
was all I'll score now I feel
like that's not that's not how the games played anymore you're six four you're still going to be
relied to be highly skilled able to move make plays so so is there truly a detriment to size and
you know you do like size i mean we all love size well a poke check's a poke check if i can
get the puck from here and i don't have to be three feet closer that makes a difference but you
don't have to you know i don't think you know we look at it for sure you know we take into
consideration, but they can play, you know, when you and, I'm thinking to you and Reggie,
when you guys were back there, you would mall guys. You could really, you know, manhandle them,
hook, hold, just the physical play, you can't do that now. So you have to let them kind of,
if they can skate and they can compete, you know, you can't really do what you used to do,
like just hook and hold and grab and, you know, kind of keep them to the outside and they
couldn't make place, you know, but now they can. So, you know, you watch your way.
Stan Kovin and I definitely think Johnny was one of those guys where, wow, you know, is he going to be a lot?
We question to hear you.
We were so excited watching him and how is it going to translate and it was unbelievable.
You know, it was fine, but you couldn't hook and hold and whack the guys like they used to.
So, you know, it still is because you watch, you know, it's a grind to play in the playoffs.
But, you know, I give Carolina credit.
They're small guys.
They did win two rounds really quick.
Yeah, they won.
fast. They didn't get dragged into the mud.
Yeah, you know, if they had to play seven
games, six games, it starts
to wear on you. And I do think
that was a huge advantage for them. The way they
were able to close out those series
quick, and then, yeah, you're fresh.
But, yeah, size,
again, if you could, if I had a
six, five guy and a six,
you know, a five, nine, and they felt
they were the exact same player, of course you're going to go
with the bigger guy, but small guys can
play now. You know, I don't worry about it.
So does Bjork size
give you pause or do you feel like he's player enough to get past it?
It's that that's the internal debate we have every day.
And that'll be the debate here as you move forward.
You know, can he do it at the NHL level?
You know, and even I want to see where Marcus, you know,
Marcus knows them as well as anybody.
So really get Marcus in there and kind of go through everything.
It's like when you talk about Verhof, you go to Jerome because, you know,
he was his billet and he coached him and he knows him as well as anybody.
So, you know, those are the debates.
But I do think you watch him.
He competes.
He's not afraid.
So, you know, it'll be interesting.
You know, you see the list.
He might be there.
He might not be there when at six.
You know, it's like you said, I think there's a lot of, this is a D heavy draft,
but there are those forwards that are, you know, everybody's talking about in the top five
or six for sure.
