Episode Date: October 8, 2026

Boomer, Pinder and Rhett react to Connor Zary's first public comments since clearing waivers and being sent down to the Calgary Wranglers, and the young forward certainly said a lot of the right t...hings. Zary admitted he was caught off guard by the Flames' decision, opening up about how difficult it was to sit at home for 24 hours waiting to find out whether another NHL team would claim him. He also spoke candidly about the human side of the situation, the support he's received and his desire to get back to work, enjoy playing hockey and move forward. The guys break down Zary's surprisingly mature response, whether this experience could be the wake-up call he needs and what it might mean for his relationship with the Flames moving forward. Did Connor Zary say enough to leave the door open for an NHL return, or have we already seen his final game in Calgary?Video Link: https://youtu.be/yG1p4yZGous #nhl #nhlshorts #nhlplayoffs #nhlpredictions #nhlhockey #nhlpicks #stanleycup #stanleycupfinal #calgaryflames Hosted on Acast. Starting point is 00:00:00 Connor Zeri began life as a Calgary Wrangler. Think about when you're in the public eye and you're an athlete. Yeah. You have media commitments. How was the trek to the Wranglers? Glenn Campbell was there for CTV.
Starting point is 00:00:20 But this, like this, we're being kind of having some fun with it, but here's a guy. This is a big, this is a big blow to your ego. The team that I'm, I'm on, put me on waivers. The league that I'm in, no one picked me up. Yeah, the teams that I'm not on didn't even want me. Now I'm off to the American League and now these media people are going
Starting point is 00:00:42 to want to come and stick microphones in my face to see if I'll go off or say something salty. So I'm going to take the high road. Ah, boring. I'm guessing is maybe what he was thinking. It was the plan. It sucks, right? There's no really sugar coding it. You're sitting there by yourself and on your couch for 24 hours. That feels like five. days where you're just waiting to hear anything and and everything about what's happening with your life. So for sure it sucks, but at the same time, I got such a good support system, you know, the amount of people that reached out to me and just said they're on my side and have my back and to kind of stick with it is kind of what makes me feel good about myself. You know, you never want to go through
Starting point is 00:01:19 something like that, but when you have, I think I legit had 150 text messages within a couple hours where it's like I have that many guys who have my back and see who I am not only as a a person or as a player, but as a person is pretty nice to see because I think the human part gets lost in a lot and to know that you still are a good person when you're going through something bad is big for me. If I sit here and told you like I'm not pissed off, like that would just be me lying. So I think it's something that you try and you take with a grain of salt and you work and you try and just prove people wrong. That's really all it is. I think if I can come here and like I mentioned before, be a good person and a good player, that's what matters to me.
Starting point is 00:02:00 they'll see there being an opportunity with the flames? I think that's kind of, that's up to them. I think I'm, I'm here to just do what I can do as a player. I think, uh, I want to play hockey. I want to do what I do.
Starting point is 00:02:11 And like I just mentioned, I want to have fun and enjoy that. So, um, I think that's not really my focus right now. I think it's just to kind of take a day by day and, and do my thing. So there it is.
Starting point is 00:02:22 Reasonable. I think he's, he's, uh, he's an honest chap. It does suck. I was pissed off. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:02:28 what am I going to tell you? Hey, this is part of it. of the pro? Oh, I've been in the NHL for how many years now, and now I'm in the American League. Yeah. He has to, he has to believe that he should be in the National Hockey League. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:39 It was a good question. I think that was Danny Austin. DA. Who, uh, had asked, you know, do you see a path back to the flames? Because he listened to the show, yes. Yeah. So, yes, he saw the clip. Um, he's like, well, it's, how the hell am I?
Starting point is 00:02:55 And he, he's right. He can't call himself. He can't control any of it. I don't control that. She can be the best player in the American League by a mile. It doesn't mean anything. It's up to the team. They control his fate. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:05 You get traded. He's come back up because he stay there. We'll see. Well, I hope Zeri didn't watch the show yesterday. I don't care. Because he, uh, I didn't say anything bad about him. I called Pinder an idiot.
Starting point is 00:03:14 I know. It was my family that shouldn't have watched the show. Yeah. Not series. Yeah. Um, but yeah, it's, with, unless the coach changed, it's, it's hard in a way to see a path.
Starting point is 00:03:29 because I don't know that the player is going to dramatically change his style. Maybe he does. I don't think that's the vibe I get from what he. That's not why he's there. He's not talking about change. He's talking about having fun and playing, but I think the teams probably send him down with get better at X, Y, and Z, and you're an NHLer again.
Starting point is 00:03:48 So it's, that will be the rub. Like, does he start making better decisions with the puck when the numbers aren't in their favor? It is a fine line, folks. Hey, make plays. I'm an offense. I got to make some. Don't turn the puck over. And the slippery slope, too, is that your one-on-one move might burn an HL defenseman.
Starting point is 00:04:11 It might be a turnover of the NHL. Do you know what I mean? Like if you're driving around the sixth defenseman for the Colorado Eagles, that's not the same as going around some Lugan named Rett Warner with a seven-foot wingspan. God, I love to hook and hold. I'm so good. You were great out. I can't believe to carry.
Starting point is 00:04:26 James. He screwed you. First the lockout than that. The lockout and then the rules. That's a double whammy. How is how am I supposed to survive? Who's thinking about Rettster? How am I not supposed to take this personally?
Starting point is 00:04:42 You took away a year of my salary. And now everything that I'm good at, you can't do it. I was praised for my defensive prowess. That's right. Which was holding. Completely eliminated. Stupid league. of the rulebook.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Two refs? Two. How am I supposed to punch this guy when he looks over there? You were a rugged rear guard. You know, if you were a rear guard, that meant you couldn't skip. He's a little bit. He's a lot.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Clear the crease. Can I? Go ahead. It was very odd this morning. My youngest said, you know, dad, I think I could skate faster, you backwards and forwards. I said, well, you come by it honestly
Starting point is 00:05:33 because I used to be told that myself. Good thing you play D, son. You're not a forward. It did follow it up with you might want to work on the floor. Yeah, see, that is. Don't rest on your laurels is then. That's a commentary on your backwards skating. Wonderful.
Starting point is 00:05:50 Backwards. Also a commentary on your forward skating. Yeah. Perhaps. He said, I could catch Adrian when he goes, forwards and I go backwards. Come on, Adrian. It is amazing.
Starting point is 00:06:02 It's good stuff. As someone who watched you play in your career to hear these stories, it kind of tugs in my heart's a little bit. Beautiful stuff. He's a sweet boy. Yeah.
