well, maybe not so much of you, but you were, you did it for a long time. But it's the business that I worked in, work in, whatever you want to call it, just how things are handled

when there's firings or when things happen. It happens like that. There is no sensitivity. It is just, hi, we're making a change. We're going to walk you to the door and you're going to leave.

and your card and the fob whatever and we'll send you your shit bye see yeah so when you're not used to that maybe it's it doesn't make it right i was like i can't believe they just did that it's like well that's kind of off with your head that's how that's how it's done uh and i think i think people wanted to see if we were going to celebrate ha ha we were if we were going to relish in it and i it was a sad day i it's oh it's good people that are you Yeah, left flapping into wind here. It's like any workplace. There's ups and downs and nothing's 100%.

But I think by and large, we did well for them. We did okay by them. We had good times. There were good people. I enjoyed working there. The only downside was the damn alarm clock. Getting up early. And then something started to happen, right?

It was, you know, we've made some changes and we're not going to replace this person. And this person, your boss is fired and, now it's somebody in Vancouver is the house so we're not going to have a boss even here in the building there's not going to be what happens if what happens if the keyboards start on fire what happens when yeah so it was starting to kind of he was coming that way it was fraying but i got to admit when Tuesday when that stuff came down it just kind of let it sink in like later in the day i just went out to my out to my uh out to my donnelly from uh capital chef and just turned it on to see is what's the sound is that's real it was real sad i were i was there for 15 years and i was the thing about music radio when you're a dj or whatever saying well the music is what the what it is if you don't like country or if you don't like pop music or classic rock you're not going to listen even if you like the d like that there with talk radio it's you're listening to those people the people are the product and yeah you're talking

about whatever it is politics or sports or whatever but um you have a real connection as a listener to the people. And as people behind the microphone, you connect with the listeners. Because you're all kind of, you're interested in the same thing. And I know when we left, there were people's like,

man, this, this sucks. You were there every day. And because I've loved radio my whole life kind of thing, I know what that's like. When a DJ leaves or when something changes, like,

routine. And it's kind of that way now. It's put my day off. Yeah, it's like that with with me for podcasts now. If the podcast doesn't show up or if they, oh, we're not doing this. If there's changes, well, I don't like that because I've, I've become very fond of this, this certain thing. So there's, yeah, there's no, there's no celebration. It sucks. And I, well, you don't expect that there's any, there's not even a replacement that you're, no, you know what I mean? Like, they didn't make a change. Yeah. It's not, oh, we brought in someone new. We think he'll like them better. Yeah. And, And for the staff, and it's not like I'm letting anybody off the hook, but it's just that's the way it usually is.

When you're let go, it's very quick. You don't get to say goodbye. There's no farewell shows. You're just out. And they take your stuff and they give you a box to fill it and get out or get out, we'll fill it and then send it to you kind of thing. So yeah, I feel for all those guys, there's still a lot of people there that we worked with.

And as in a way, it was hard to leave. It's been four years now. I left whatever it was June of 22. I don't know what it was. Couldn't do mornings anymore. I just felt like it was slowly killing me. But it was all I'd ever done.

And I was so upset leaving, even though I felt like it was something that I had to do. So I feel for those, for those guys, I was texting with somebody last night. That is rough. Yeah, except this time with how the business, business is, it's like a hockey team saying, uh, you're cut and there's, and we're folding the league.

The, actually the sport, as you know it is, uh, is ceasing to exist. What's the next radio station? Where do you go? What do you do? It's, I think writers went through it a few years. Sure with with newspapers and articles and stuff. Yeah. There's a lot less of that going on. Yeah. And now this is the same thing. I do love. and it has nothing to do with Rogers, but I love the, and I don't know how long it lasts because we move on very quickly

in the world these days, but to see the community kind of up in arms. It's like, this was our thing. This is our, this was our thing. How can you just, you don't replace it. There's no warning. It's just gone. I was listening to a show this morning.

I come back after for lunch. It's static now and it's gone forever. So I do love seeing the listeners and the fans of the radio station kind of being upset about it. And even, you know, the flames have had some, the flames have got some, it's a whole other kind of thing what they're going to do because there's no, are there going to be games on a radio station? Like, it's very much up. I'll tell you what.

Listening to a hockey game, baseball sporting event on a radio station is classic. Yeah. Yeah. And is it gone in this form in Calgary forever? I don't know. But should surprise no one. Classy guy, he comes on with us, great guy, would come on the radio show when we were doing that. Dave Dickinson had this to say about it yesterday at his availability.

We were disappointed. I mean, it doesn't seem right. Calgary's a sports city. And I just know those guys personally and how hard they work. They'll land on their feet. I get it. But we're disappointed. They're not still involved.

with our day to days with the stampeters and sports in Calgary. So hopefully the city rallies, we find another way to keep promoting sports in the game because I think those guys were doing an excellent job and we'll miss them. But yeah, they're welcome at a man whenever. And I know they'll land on the feet, but we've got to acknowledge it, a tough break for them.

It's a lot classy stuff there from Dave. You'd expect, no less. And they're not the rights holders, right? No. QR is the rights holders there. So for him to be talking about that. pretty is pretty cool. So yeah, to Steinberg and Matt and logo and Dumas and all the guys that we worked with over there. Um, the I do, yeah, I hope that's landing on their feet and what

comes next and you hear all of that. And I, and I hope it is. I mean, it, for us, we left and and this thing kind of came together and, and it's been great and it continues to be great. And I don't know what goes from here, but I can tell you. I, it's a bit of a, poking the ribs for me anyway say hey this is it's not it's not necessarily bad news

but maybe step your game up there's there's a little motivator yeah there's there's some take it for granted there's some audience out there that's looking for a home there's some sponsorship that's looking for there's a lot of things out there well let's go and do what we do I'm proud of what we do and I do

and I do think that there will be some things happening been a lot of phone calls. A lot of phone calls. A lot of phone calls last couple days. No one called you? Well, you're in the air on that perfect flight. It was a good flight.

The ducks had a week to match. Otherwise, they would get four first round picks. Count it gold. Four first rounders. Or you have to pay $18 million a year. The Anaheim ducks have matched today. So they have to pay Leo $18 million. in each of the next five seasons.

I'm not shocked. I'm wondering about this for beak character, though. There's some questions for sure. He has some splaining to do because he has been a grinder. Yeah. And at a certain point, you feel like, maybe I'm not going to grind this guy or these guys. So what extreme do you not like,

if you're grinding just to grind, what it? Yeah. And it costs you $3 million a year? Yeah. And the other, like, I was thinking about that because I didn't, this just happened. Yeah, yeah. And now that they have matched, which I fully expected, why didn't they do it instantly? Why?

I'm, yeah, no, I think, really? It's such, but it's such a big number. You have to kind of look at it. All right. Well, what about Cutter Goce? What about, what does that mean down the road? It means you're paying them because you overplayed your hand. That's what it means.

Yeah. Now, and I know there's been a lot said about it in the last week, the Samueli family. I mean, they've got the money, but they're more of a budget, they've got a budget and how they operate things with that team. They're not just going to spend to the cap and, you know, budget be damned. So I think there was a bit of, is there, are there some trades we can make? What else can we do? Is there an opportunity? What if, what if we take four first rounders?

How could we possibly? And in the end, yeah, you come back to it. this guy is a kid. And this is from the owners, Henry and Susan Samuel, quote, matching the offer sheet was an easy decision, as Pat has intelligently left enough cap space to give us the ability to retain Leo. We have extremely high expectations for Leo.

We firmly believe he will continue his strong growth trajectory and become one of the truly elite centers in the league while continuing to make a strong impact in our community. That is true. the first sentence is tremendous. Pat has intelligently left enough cap space to give us, well, to me that reads, we're not happy with Pat.

Yeah. That is tongue firmly in cheek. The fact that they're releasing a statement even. Yeah. No, I mean, he played hard. He was going to play hardball. It's just the way he's done business. He's going to grind.

It's great when you get deals. So, boy, that's a good contract. Boy, that's proud for beak. He's really. He's a shrewd and hard negotiator. And now this. I don't know what Leo would have signed for because he needed a contract. That's why how this is all using RFA, he needs to get a deal done.

Would he have signed for 12? Would he have signed for 13? What was the offer to him? What would it? God, I think. But no question. This has cost the Anaheim Ducks multiple millions in each of the next five seasons moving forward. and now it's the trickle-down effect for everybody else who's in that locker room that's in the locker room in that an impending RFA who's going to be not they're not all Leo Carlson but there will be some guys I was a top five pick I've had this these these numbers he's had those numbers why why would I sign with the team if I can maybe get to be a restricted free agent and open to offer sheets you have I be elite to

well that's not even true you have to every player in the NHL is really good I'm just saying like if you're not elite you still might be very desirable because I don't know what the cutoffs are for the picks but if it's only two first rounders yeah once you get into the territory where a team is really going to have to take a deep breath

to match you're in that four first round pick territory yeah but I didn't I don't know so a team's got to have to have You don't have to, it doesn't have to be an $18 million player to put a team in a pinch, I don't think. I get that that takes you immediately into a pinch. Yeah. But there would be some teams that are like, oh, shit. Now what?

He's a 6'3-210-pound centerman who is 21 years of age. He missed 12 games last year, still had 29 goals. He's approaching a point per game. He had 67 and 70. Yeah, he's elite. and was the second overall pick in 2023. I remember that there was a bit of shock there. So maybe that's a little go higher than people thought,

but it did not take long for the ducks to look smart on that one. So what is? Now what do you do? Cuttergoche and Beckett Seneca needs to be sorry. Figure it out. That's what you do. Teams need to, they need to be willing to give up four firsts.

They need to have the wherewithal to spend that much every year on a player. and all of it, the money, the cap space. So I don't know how often we will see it. It won't be. But it was a long time. We're never going to see offer sheets because you're going to piss off the other team. You're going to piss off other GMs.

Who's, if other teams and GMs in the league are looking at this now, thinking about how they're going to have to conduct business and how their spending might go up, are they pissed off at Verbeek or are they pissed off at, Danny Breyer and the flyers. They're the one to get over. Yeah, I don't know. I think you've got to get over yourself

because I think that amassing high-end elite talent, Vegas, they don't care. Now, they've not done this, but they don't care. They run, right? And I think that's the approach. I think there used to be an old boys club to the detriment of a lot of things. Now it kind of ran smoothly and they're handshake deals

I mean, you can develop, I guess, but you're typically not even handed the ingredients to turn a guy into a great so you can develop them all you want and a guy can all of a sudden become a number one. I didn't people were like you guys aren't saying anything how come you're not saying like I just felt person that was for the people that worked there it was kind of their time to talk about it on social media or to have comments. Like we left long ago and we were there a long time, but it felt like it was not for for me to jump in and be up in arms or sad or happy or whatever. So just I guess your thoughts. Yeah.

I mean, I grew up in the city and I listened to Flames games on a little radio in my room on what was 660 then. And then eventually it ended up being 960. But like to have a sports talk station in your city was incredible. because no matter what you were doing when you were doing it, there was somebody talking about sports. So that was like overnights, you know, we were driving in at four something to the studio.

There'd be, you know, syndicated shows from the States. Late at night, you get play by play from Major League Baseball or NFL. You know, you'd get some playoff hockey. So wherever you were in your vehicle,

you'd always have this old pal, this guy that wanted to talk sports with you. Now, they might not listen to you, but they would talk a lot. And you'd have opinions and you'd be able to, you know, it was like you're a part of,

of a club. You could go around town and be filled with sports knowledge. And there was, there was a lot of us that were in that club. And you'd be abreast of what's going on in a lot of sports. You'd be up to speed with the news of the day. And, you know, so, so from a Calgary standpoint, it really sucks. And then for someone that really got their start in sports stock, like it, it stings a bit because that was the place that kind of launched the three of us in this sphere. I mean, you know, Dean, you'd done a bit of sports and a bunch of radio. Ret was a former player. I was a play by play guy by trade, but we come out of there as polished sports broadcasters. And that's a huge credit to the power of the station and what, you know, Kelly Kersh envisioned

with us. And I'm going to miss it. It sucks. Like there was definitely room for podcasts and radio stations, but, you know, I'm not surprised the day happened. I'm surprised it was Tuesday. It was just traditional media and, you know, the folks that have owned it. We've seen this story way too much the last decade. Yeah. And the kind of the shittiest part of it is, is you hear from Matt Rose and Logan and those guys over there. And they're so humble and proud of the work that they did.

They took so much pride to have, I would guess, as a business owner, you would love for your employees to have a stake in the interest in how well the business is doing. And you have it there. All of those guys and the girls, like everybody,

all the people that worked there cared so, you care so much about that because it's kind of you. You're the product in a way. way if you're on end. So you care. You have so much pride in it. And then you have all that equity as an owner you get from your staff and you just show them the door, which again, it's the business is. It's always been that way. It doesn't make it right. But it's too bad that it has to end or that it can't work. I think a part of it is too is how much money Roger spends on rights. If they weren't a rights holder, is it different? I don't know. I don't know. I don't know the financial picture. And I don't know. what the listening patterns, yeah. What the listening patterns are. I know what you look at, go ahead.

Sorry. Yeah, like they bought Shaw for like billions and billions and billions and billions of billions, billions of billions and billions. They're laying out of almost a billion a year on their new TV rights deal for sports net. You know, they just purchased, you know, over half of MLSC over the last few years because they used to own like 35 to 40 percent or something. Yeah.

They're spent a lot of money. It's not on, you know, radio stations outside of Toronto, safe to say. Yeah. And you know what? Similar to Vancouver. The same thing happened there. TSN pulled the plug on their talk radio, not that long ago a couple years ago. And now Sportsnet's gone to have cities like Calgary and Vancouver that don't have sports talk is wild. It's wild. Well, you think about it in Vancouver, that's white caps.

That's, you know, they've got Blue Jays affiliate baseball. The Canucks, obviously. In Calgary, it's like roughnecks, hip, man, like there's just, there's a lot of conversations that aren't happening now because these stations are gone, which really sucks. It hurts these teams. It hurts the sports fans in the market all because someone in a boardroom didn't like the ROI projections for the next three years. It sucks. Yeah. And look, just flat out honest, right? Like, I'm sad to see it go and all that. We, we're here. We cover every game. We do post it. Like, that's, it was in, you,

You knew it was coming. You could see it coming. And was it part of the strategy? Sure. I'm with you. I didn't think it was going to happen this soon. But that's what it's about. It's about having something and being available to do what we're doing here.

You've got Henry Mews, who's at Michigan, who is another righteie. It is very interesting to me. And they make a very concerted effort to get Carson Carls at the draft at the expense of other right-handed D who were on the board. I mean, virtually every draft prognosticator had Chase Reed ahead of Carson Carl's. Now, I liked Carl's better, but it does to me sort of speak to the idea that maybe Bristewitch is, as a Dangle candidate, Bobby and I are going to talk about Shane Wright on the show. You know, there are there are five or six guys next year who conceivably profile. This is going to be a big part of what Stephen says as possible top six centers in the draft. And I would say that if the flames get one of those guys and I don't know. what happens with Shane Wright. That's going to be a totally

different part of the show. But I would say if they get one of those centers, I don't know if there is another team in the league that has a more balanced pool. They've got... The problem is that, yes, great, they're balanced, but who's the star? That's the thing. If they get one of those centers, they'll have a star. You're betting that he'll turn

into a star. I get it. I'm okay giving him the opportunity, but I would be you just said it about motto, who the F's given up on a kid? If they believe it's going to be. Right,'s different. I'm talking if they get one of those centers with a top two, top three pick in this coming draft, which, which there are, we're going to talk to Stephen.

There are, I get it's a finger cross thing, but there are four, five, six of them in this year's draft, sort of similar to how there are that many D and we were tracking them throughout the year. And by the time it got to Calgary at six, Seattle at seven, there were still D who were being talked about as number one, number two D. That's how this year's draft projects for centers. I love talking to some fans. They're like, okay, so we're in this rebuild.

And maybe they'll be bad again this year. Boy, if you win the draft lottery. Oh, DuPont, you're going to be another defenseman. Well, shit. That'll be one of the things I know we're going to be talking about going into this next season as to what he is. If he's trade bait, what? This team is nowhere near a Stanley Cup contend.

So there's all kinds of things. You better trust the process. The interesting thing with Morgan Frost is that there were three centers who are going to be UFAs in a year. Only three of them scored more goals than Morgan Frost did this year. And they were Pavel Zaka who plays with David Posternak. And then Sidney Crosby and Ryan O'Reilly. And those are the only three centers who were going to be free agents next summer who scored more goals to Morgan Frost this past year. I think there's a chance, given what we saw with Nick Waugh and with Nick

doubt and with a whole host of centers who went for crazy returns at last year's deadline. I think if you hold on to Frost to start the season, I think you're going to get a lot for him. Play it out. Yeah. Have some fish. It's a weird one, right? Because I think it's more one than the other. But we talk about how sometimes you just, you overvalue who you've got.

While you get this and I think he's, and White Cloud, I think is probably in that territory a little bit. That cap hit is one thing. But I think he's just so good. You can get a first, that sort of thing. I wonder to a certain extent on the flip side. Are we undervaluing a bit what Frost is because he's not elite. It doesn't mean he's not an NHL or he's 20, right? It depends on what he does this fall because he's not driven the bus until the last year.

And he got cleared to take over that rule. Well, he's a good job of it. So go ahead and do it again this fall. It'll be Matt Bay Gridden and Matt Coronado. We're probably playing with him out of out of camp. And it'll be, it'll be very much a sink or swim type thing because they got lots of guys would play off there. And again,

what he's trying to establish is, are you elite or are you just a good sentiment? Yeah. Like, and I don't know that he's, he's certainly not a number one on a, on a cup team, but are you good enough to fill the number two hole?

Yeah. On a cup team, you've shown glimpses of it. Or are you a, or are you a sentiment that the Philadelphia Flyers said, yeah, we're good enough. That's seen enough. Again,

it's because you're not elite, doesn't mean you're of no value. No. but it feels like he's almost pigeonholed here because the flames so desperately need high end centermen. Well, you're not, you're not the number one we need.

Any takeaways from what you saw there, player-wise? Yeah, we had to call them up over at Flames Nation last week, six standouts. And the standouts, I mean, were largely who you'd expect. I mean, Carson Carl's just an incredible skater. I mean, there's not really much to say about it other than, you know, you're watching these kids playing in drills and three-on-three scrimmage.

And there have been lots of players who looked good in those scrimmages. I remember the E2-2-lola hat trick on Matthew Kichuk's line, that the first scrimmage that I ever went to, and we were all singing his praises. But yeah, Carson, Carl's, Cole, Roshney were just both head and shoulders. Fantastic. I would say the number one guy who surprised me. And not even as far as I haven't seen this before, but just every time I go to one of these things, whether it's a development camp or it is a prospect scrimmage, like the Flames did their

ones against the Oilers last spring or last fall, Macy O' Phillips is really impressive. and Willie Desjardam was there. I didn't talk to Willie de Jardam. But he was there. He and Connie were both talking to Macyo after the scrimmage. And I mean, Medicine Hats lost a lot of defensemen. And I think Macyo is going to have a big opportunity to have a really big year with Medicine Hatt this year.

They got a young Warner kid. They got a opportunity, a big dude. He's a huge dude. Like, I was, I was shocked. Like, we are, we're looking at Carson Carls as being this big, two, physical type guy. He looks like a, he's teeny. He's teeny next to Macyo Phillips.

But the thing with Macyo Phillips is he can really skate. And he can, he, I have not seen a defenseman who likes to skate the puck up the ice as soon as he gets it since Nikita Zadour. And exactly the same way. So that's, that was, that was sort of the biggest takeaway that I had from that,

those three days. How that has changed too, right? Not that long ago. You'd go to these things in the summer or when camp rolls around. It's like, they've got nobody. Yeah. Who's knocking on the door here. Yeah, let's go watch.
