Right. But it does affect somebody when you don't eat for 40 hours. How are you your complaint? Well, I'm just, I'm watching people and I'm around people that are that are doing the fasting thing. Outside of this room or just short and temperate? Oh, a little, yeah, one outside of this room. Really? Yeah.

Okay. And three inside. And see, I think you're well into it now. That's a grizzled vet here. Yeah. But there was a time. I remember you were, you would say, I need to eat today. Yeah.

And so yeah, it's, I wouldn't say it's necessarily irritability. And I do think it's something that you get over, but I think dipping that toe in. I was doing the Columbus game and Clarkie is in management for Columbus. And it was just amazing to see that face because he has a change. He's still in great shape, glasses, everything, like just looks like you can still play.

Like I lost I heard that too. Terry Karkner was good buddies with them when they played in Philly together and then I was roommates with Karks in Florida and he used to tell me Yeah. Like there's, you know, another one

I'll give you the dark course which are sleeper bet sleeper pick, Jammer Mayors. So I'm a Jammer in St. Louis. Also he was in Calgary when I was in the coaching side. Jammer's an unbelievable human and

great. a lot of fun to go have a few beers with. I'll go back to my St. Louis days. It was Chris Pronger and Mark McGuire. We had a nice little trio there. That's a name drop for you. Yes. How about this one?

This would have been, what, 98? Prongs used to joke that I was the million-dollar bartender because I was the backup, but I was the guy who could spread the stage. Prongs was winning the heart, and Mac was hitting 70. Yeah, that would have been the era. Yeah.

And I'm the only one who could talk. That's the brazier thing. We had a lot of fun about that. I don't know. There's a Mount Rushmore, and then maybe there's a little mini sunshine hill of guys that you would love to. But I've been blessed to play with a lot of great teammates. And, you know, another one that I loved spending time with, not a lot of time with,

because he was just out of my league was Brett Hall. Brett Hall was so good to me in St. Louis. Like, I was always alone at Christmas, and Christmas Eve was his night. So he had kids and stuff, and I believe he's divorced and that. Christmas Eve, I would go with him through a bar called the Cheshire.

It was unbelievable. And he was like, hey, come with me. Like, I got the invite from the great Brett Hall. So, you know, there's some, real special teammates along the way. But the guys I named, you know, the Red, the Robbins, the Kippers, guys like that, lifelong friends that had a lot of fun with. And I would want to be riding shotgun with them anytime. It's a hell of a taxi squad. It's got Lindross Pronger and hole. Like, that's nice. That's the black aces for you. That's really good.

That's the crazy part. Their team B. Yeah, that is crazy. We were saying yesterday, not to sorry, right, not to pivot, talk a little bit. Sorry. Bones back behind the bench. He's coaching the Columbus Blue Jackets. I think they showed the stat between his days as an assistant or a head coach or associate coach.

84. No one's been doing it more than he has. 2,900. It's like it's the noodles effect. Everybody loves them. It's a good guy. Any team in the NHL would love to have Rick Bonas in their midst and Columbus is the latest. Well, and I had Bones in the island, you know, Bones is a great guy, his son, Ryan Bones was about with Ottawa senators.

Like to me, there's, there's so many ties to that family. And if you look at it, I heard you guys before I came on talking about it. Like, it didn't make sense for me. There's got to be more to that story. Like, I just, I don't think they wake up and go, we just, the coach is the problem. You're like, okay, I like there. I actually think they've got a lot of good young players there. like a lot. I like the goaltender.

You know, I think Fantasilly is going to be a player. Like I think you look at some of their players that Marchenko is a good player. Zach Werensky is one of the best in the league. Defenseman. So you look at it. They've got some pieces. Something doesn't drive there for them to just make a change right now.

So it's probably a bigger picture. They're like, okay, let's get through the next 40 games with a guy who's really well liked. And then let's reset in the summer. Bones is 70 years old. I don't think it's a long-term fix there. What he is is you come in.

He helps with the culture. He helps with everything. Bones is, to me, he's a versatile guy. He can adapt to any situation. And I think obviously it's a great hire just knowing the reputation or the, you know, the reputation of Rick Bones. He's a good coach and really well liked. I don't know if they'll go on this magical run,

but I think it's more about just getting the organization. You know, if there was something going on behind the scenes we're not privy to, maybe in the right direction. He's like that interim president at a business that's going to come in, figure out where the holes are and what to do. And then report back to the board and say, okay, this is what you need. He's a fixture. He's Mr. Wolfe. He comes in. That's right.

He's the wolf. And you move on. And then he has said, and it wouldn't surprise me if they move him into, you know, I'm sure he's close with Don Waddell into like management, a management. an advisor role. Sure. Kind of like Jacques Martin did in Ottawa a couple years ago. You bring in Jock, Jock finished out the season, you move him up, and he's a senior advisor. I think Bones would be great in that scenario too.

The Jackets beat the Flames last night. It's a tie game, a minute 34 left, and McKenzie Wigger, who has had, it's been a disastrous season. I don't think that's overstating it. He was a guy who in the summer was at the Olympic orientation camp. Like he was, this guy is a couple years ago with 20 goals. And there's just, it has been a, a disaster for him this year. Anyway, he tries to get the puck out and can't.

And then it's in the back of his net. And they showed the footage. And I don't know that it made the highlight packages, but he was just kind of sitting there. The jacket. Staring into space and wearing it. And it's not the first time, but it's, it's the latest and the worst. What have you? I don't know how close you're watching.

watching, but for for McKenzie Weger, it has been, it's been the worst of times. It has. And I think it's, this is a guy with tremendous pride in his game. And you're right. You know, on the short list for Team Canada, a guy that we all know when he's at the top of his game, what he's capable of. And I think he has a standard for himself. And then when we don't see it, you're like, what's missing here? The one thing that's been missing when I've watched and I've watched almost every minute they played this year, the consistency from game to game with him. I'll see play.

It's wild within a game you see elite plays and then plays you're like, where did that come from? And, you know, the inconsistency almost from shift to shift. And I don't think that's, hey, I'm having a bad season. I think it's more like,

hey, I don't think it's a lost focus thing. It's more just, I haven't seen these wild swings within a game. When guys are having off seasons, you go, they just can't put it together. This guy will put it together and make a good play. And then all of a sudden, there's maybe a poor play to follow it up. So I don't know what's going on, but I don't know from the nature of the position, Wret, when you make a mistake or critical one near the end of the game, I think you're wearing it.

you know, I've obviously allowed bad goals and, you know, crushing goals near the end of the game where you know, that's it. Like, I've cost them two points or cost them a game or something. That's kind of what you're talking about. That would be the look is like, man, you know, we've at least had a point here, maybe go for a second. And now we're, you know, we've given up an empty netter. I like that he's, it sounds bad, but it means he cares. Yeah, he does. You watch that clip and him sitting on the bench.

You're like, well, there's a guy that cares at least. He's not just like. That's why I started my comments, guys, with the word pride. Like that guy is a gamer. Like regardless of what you, you know, see out of him, I think he comes to play every night. I think he prepares. I think he's a pro. I don't think he's, well, I don't know.

I haven't asked, but I would think he's like really coachable. I don't think he's a guy who thinks he's a no-it-all and kind of a hero. I think he would be a terrific guy to have in the room. I've only met him a few times. And what I've met and what I've experienced, he's an awesome guy. He's the type of guy you want in your organization in your room. I think he's fantastic. But mistakes are mistakes.

And Rhett, I think you nail it where he says, you know, he's wearing it because he cares. He's not sitting there going, you know, or maybe trying. We see a lot of athletes that try and point to the excuses. Come on. This could happen. No, wear it and move on. That's a pro. It doesn't feel like get me out of here, guy.

It feels like a, God, this is killing me. I need to be better. I can't make that mistake vibes. Because I saw one of the group chats, someone was like, he wants to get out of here. I think it's the opposite. I think he cares a lot. This is killing. I think he cares about winning and losing, which matters.

And I don't, I think if he was playing for Dallas, just because Dallas came into my head, it would be the same thing. I will ask you this, a more in-depth question. All right, you've got Weger, you've got Anderson, you've got cadre,

you've got Coleman, Backland's not for sure not going anywhere. Right. How to set up the question. How many guys do you need as veteran presence in a room to develop younger skilled players?

Because it's not zero, but it's how much is it? Like, you know, Columbus. I'm looking at Columbus. You know, and I was even thinking about you and your career, you're here. And not that it was a young upstart team, but the year before I got here, you guys missed the playoffs again. Yeah.

And I was trying to remember back who was the veteran presence that, and we've looked at Edmonton, they bring a bunch of kids, and they get criticized for not having veteran presence. Chicago, I think. I don't know if they were criticism. I think you know what I'm trying to get at. Exactly what you're saying is like who do you keep if you're there's a tipping point in far as how many.

Weger would be highly sought after because of what he is. Anderson highly sought after because of what he is. Codry. Coleman. All those guys that are your veteran leaders are highly sought after because of what they are. How many can you give up? and because it's the same if we just use Anderson as the example

you're looking at Anderson you're saying our window to win doesn't align with maybe his and he's our best asset to trade to get the most in return contracts up all that but if you said I'm trading weaker I'll tell you what there's you're going to get something back I think all four players that you mentioned I think if I was an opposing manager any team that that feels that they are you know on the cost board needs held i'd be calling and i'd

be asking about all four of those players because of what you just said coleman's one he's versatile you know cadry's one and he's more skilled and versatile you know can play hiring your lineup anderson can run a power play in a top pairing weger can run a power play in a top pairing yes we We talked about mistakes, but this guy's still a hell of a player. All four of those players, Connie's phone should be ringing off the hook going, what's it going to take. Now, I understand what you're saying, Red. Breck's going to need a mentor.

Brex's going to need, you know, if it's coffee, you need Charlie Huddy. If it's Eric Carlson, you need Mark Matha. You know, you do need somebody that is going to show him the way. Now, I don't know. this is why I'm not in Connie's chair. I don't know if you're looking at, if you get great offers for all four of those players, you have to look at accepting them or at least, you know, entertaining them.

And you're not just going, well, love Uyghur, love Anderson, and he'd be great for Perek, but, you know, what you can find mentors, you can find guys that can develop into that role or be in that role along with Parak, along with the Rye. So I think if you're looking at the four players and going, well, you can't move away from all four because of, you know, the dressing room or the dynamic or the leadership role, I still think there's shorter-term contracts that can be had in the off-season.

Kind of like what Chicago did. Now, they missed on a couple. Corey Perry, they missed on. We don't know that I don't care, but the story, Corey Perry didn't fit in in Chicago. Okay. Nick Falino did. But then they went and got Tyler Bertuzi

and they went and added some players that were actually like good players going to grow with the group, not just these veteran guys near the end of their contract to be good mentors. So I think there's a fine balance in there where if you're looking at all four, and I don't know if you're going to move all four

or move two of the four or whatever, but those four players have tremendous value, I think throughout the league. And you have to, you know, if you're going to trade, two or three of them, the players that stay, if it's a guy like Weiger that stays, you know that he's invested and he's going to be a great mentor and be a great leader and all of that type of stuff.

Nazim Kadri, I believe, no move clause, right? 10 teams. Right? Some like that, yeah. Yeah, so he controls a lot of what his situation is. Rasmus Anderson controls. So I think Blake Coleman, what's his no move situation? I don't know if he's got.

That's a good question. It would surprise me if there was some form of a list. I mean, this guy signed a pretty good deal coming over. You don't want to jam him up. But I think at the end of the day, my point is, I understand what you're saying, Rhett. You want to still keep leaders in the room and guys who can contribute and all that. But I also think that the room that you're building, you can bring in some players

either be a trade in those trades or in free agency, maybe a little overpay for or on term for a guy that may be. has two years left and you give him three. The Michael Backwin situation, backs isn't going anywhere, but maybe other players like that, it could be tremendous mentors and leaders if you move away from the players we're talking about.

Coleman's got a 10 team, no trade, that's it. He's got some control, not all, and it's similar with Naz. I think it went from full to partial this year. Yeah.

It is fascinating. They're trying to thread the needle here, right? They're trying to be competitive, have good culture, and at the same time, bringing younger players, not easy. You're right.

And here's why, it makes me think more. I did the Ottawa-Vancover game last night. Vancouver is open for business, right? And Jimmy Rutherford said, you know, we're kind of listening to everybody, but if we're doing a hybrid rebuild, you know, you still have to keep players, he said.

Now, what does that mean? Does it mean that, you know, you're keeping Patterson because you can't move 11-5? Or is it you're keeping, you're not going to keep them and you're going to eat some of a salary and make him a $7 million player or $8 million player that somebody covets.

I look at Heronik. I look at Jake DeBrusco just signed there. I look at, I believe there's a no-move clause that kicks in for a Thatcher Dempcoe this summer. Does somebody want to take four years at $8 million? Or do you make him a cheaper goaltender and move them? Lots of decisions to be made. I'm thinking the same situation with Calgary.

There's assets there, but you've got to decide which one's, you keep within your culture and help the growth of the group, but also if you can get a king's ransom for some of these guys, you may be better turn him over. Are you, I want to ask you about Demko because he's hurt again, right? Yes.

And, but I also want to, are you concerned at all? If you're the flames, should you be concerned at all that teams like Vancouver are out there? Can you, St. Louis is going to be open for business. I'm guessing. The Rangers look like they.

might be open for business. The ducks have faltered mightily and possibly have some veterans that might be available. Are there enough buyers for these returns that we're talking about? The only reason I would say

is I would say take a look at the Eastern Conference standings. And then talk, you know, if you got all those owners sitting in a room and you got, you know, Ottawa is what, five points back, six points back with their win last night.

I didn't check the standings here. I should have. But I mean, Ottawa thinks they're a playoff team. Florida teams are a playoff team. Buffalo now thinks there a playoff team. Like I think, Toronto thinks they're a playoff team.

Like all of these teams, Montreal, Boston, whether you're in or you're out. Now, it's so lumped up. Those managers might be going, what is our team lacking? Because right now, the one thing I've noticed, and I've seen every team play live, this year, including Colorado the other day.

Every team probably still believes they need one, at least minimum one piece, minimum. And those are the teams that I think that are, that they believe they're playoff teams. There's no team, there's no perfect team out there. So there's teams with warts. So I think you've got teams in the east definitely that believe that they're a player away from getting that next step. Maybe those extra four points that will get us into the playoffs. out west, you know, team up north, I think whether they've got the cap space or not,

they're probably searching because the Amandhiopani thing hasn't really worked out. And, you know, Frederick has been in and out of the lineup. They're still working at stuff. Anaheim is an interesting one. Is Anaheim played with House money early on in the new coach bump and going, hey, we're coming back to reality. We might sell a piece off or two and let this team, either they make it organically or they don't. But do you think Seattle's sitting there?

Utah. I think Utah's a buyer. I've watched that team live last week and then again last night. That team's good. They need a backup goaltender who is an upgrade on Vanichick because the other guy has played all. I think he leads the league and wins for gold. He does. Yeah, he's got 21, I think. He's been unbelievable. Utah is one or two players away from being a playoff team and maybe a little bit of a dangerous team because they got young talent there. And they've got nothing but currency and cap space, I believe, because they've got picks and prospects and all of that. So that might be a team that you're going, didn't see that one coming, but really you

should see that as a team that could be or should be proactive. Seattle, the same thing. Ronnie Francis probably got to answer to an owner going, what are we doing here? Yeah. Made it, didn't make it. Now are we trying to? So I think there's a lot more teams, RET, coming back to, you know, what is LA doing?

I got, you know, your crumblings, like, you know, is the coach in hot water, is the team, you know, they trade to know, but like, like to me, Kenny Holland has to be proactive there if they're going to try and jump in. So there's more teams, I think, than you think, that are

more interested in players than not. Quickly back to Anaheim, I believe it's the walk year for Pat Verbeek. Does that change anything? Because expectations suddenly get high when you are in a playoff spot at Christmas, now they're on a skid.

They also have the expiring contracts of guys like Goudis and Truba and a few others. Like I find that fascinating because if they said this is it, this is our guy and he's got an extension, I think it's easy to say sell. But if you don't have a deal or you're still trying to prove it, like that's a bit of a wrinkle. It is. It is a wrinkle when you know, you're, what do they call, lame duck when you're, yeah, dup GM, lame duck coach, all of that type of stuff. because does your individual interest trump maybe the greater good of the organization?

The good managers, it doesn't. Because they stay the course. They don't get desperate. Their communication with the owner or whoever they're dealing with the president, they said this is what the organization needs at this time, whether you want me or the next guy, if you're confident in your ability. But again, I don't know the nature of how Pat Burb, wants to be a manager, but it looks like he's gone through the pain.

It looks like he, I mean, he's, they drafted and developed. They're not a great job there. I'm shocked that you've told me that he doesn't have a contract. There should be, you know how much, you know how crabby we were that Connie didn't have one? Yeah. That guy should have a contract too. It's just, it's such a quiet market. It might be in a desk like we were told Connie's was or wasn't.

But it is, it's been a really tough road. And now you're getting Seneca. now you see Leo Carlson and Roger McQueen's of Providence and you've got this great young decor with some guys that had come out of nowhere to play well like LeCone. That's good. He's a player. They've got some real. And I had a good chat with Joel Quinville when I was out there.

And Q, you know, he, it was funny because they were on a high. And he said, uh, it's fun, Jamie. But he said like, he knew. Like it was, it was almost like he was like, this is coming. A market correction is coming. Like he called it too. he just said, hey, we can score, but we can't defend. And that was really what the issue was, is they were outscoring their issue,

7-6, and they had some high-scoring games and stuff. There's another team, San Jose, what are they going to do? Do you add, or do you just go with what you have? So that's the interesting part, right, coming back to, you know, if you view Calgary as a seller and Vancouver as a seller and all these, you know, St. Louis's, there's going to be no shortage of teams calling. It's another one of those things you think about it. But if teams were sending their scouts, hey, we're going to wrap in that road trip.

They've got Columbus, Chicago, go out there and watch the flames and see Anderson. Oh, man, 20 minutes, gets into a fight, scores a goal. He is demonstrating what he's all about right now. Could be a career year, no? He's been great. Yeah. I laugh about the scouting. Go watch them.

We all watch the games. Yeah. You know what I mean? There is different. It is a difference between being in the building and getting a feeling and watching the guy on the bench and how he interacts with his teammates and stuff. Don't get me wrong. I'm not taking a shot at scouts.

I've been one. Why do you hate scouts? Seriously. I don't hate scouts. I love them. Is Rob Reyes, what's the problem here? Yeah, exactly. No, my point being is that it's always, I always laugh or it's like, we'll go, go watch this guy.

Like, we all, we all, a lot of these guys have the access to Rinknad and everything. You can watch every shift of every player any time. time you want. So it's more the intangibles that you're sniffing around on or if you're a scout, you start talking to people around the building, all of that type of stuff. I run into scouts every night. I see them at the at the rink. Do they know how much you hate them? Yeah. What are you talking about? How you shit talk all these scouts. I'm surprised they even interact with you guys. If I get barn burn burn again, wait and rock see my brain. Boom burn. Well, I mean, hey, you know, I'm okay. I just have one on Ottawa to finish, but finish.

I was going to say, be careful out in Ottawa. I hear there's things, and I know you're on the road a lot. Well, yeah, like, there's clearly a big off-ice distraction. I don't care for the rumor, but just what is the viber on the team? And like, does this have the potential to derail what was a very promising season? I mean, they make playoffs, they get down 3-0, they fight against the Leafs, and you're like, they're arriving. This is a really good young team.

They continue to bolster the roster. Where are they at? Well, you're actually the guy to help. with the answer, Pender, is because you know the numbers. So last night, we ran in our opening their expected goals for and they're expected goals against. And they're near the top of the league. I believe they were, in the sport logic, they were seventh.

And I think money puck, they were like second. So depending on what site you go to, but let's just call it. Let's saw it up. They're near the top of the league and expected goals, meaning they create a lot of chances. They just haven't been able. they've been snake-bitten at the wrong times, and unfortunately, they generate the chances,

but they're not scoring at the right time. Expect the goals against, I believe they were won, meaning they don't give up anything, but they're not getting the saves at the right time. So they're comfortable. The weird part is, if you talk to people around there, they're like, what else do you want from us?

We need a save. We need the right play. We need our power play to click. Their penalty kill is 31st, 31st in the National Hockey League. that needs to be better. But when you look at it and you dive into the numbers, his team isn't far off. But Marylandan hasn't been the Marylandin that was 8, 3, and 3 last year with three

shutouts. Allmark, obviously, it's well documented. He's away from the team. Don't know the nature of it. Don't care at this point because I'm not going to get into that. It's more about they need a goaltender, a starting goaltender, to give them $8 million worth of goaltending. And that's what they're paying him, 8.25 or whatever.

They don't have it. They have a Hunter Shepherd. This guy, look up his Hockey DB pictures. They're unbelievable. This guy's got this hair. He's like 5-11. He's a grit grinder. They go and they sign James Reimer.

James Reimer, I think, might be available tonight to them. If not, it's on the weekend. So you could see what's going on there. And yes, the off-ice distraction, all of that. I've said this. And I'll say that I'm, I'm, getting long-winded, but I said it in Toronto, too. When Toronto was going through their struggles,

it was, oh, tree built a bad team. Oh, Chief can't coach anymore. And Austin Matthews, you've got to trade him, all this stuff. All of a sudden, they're 8-0-2 in their last 10 leading into last night. And I said, well, Chief can coach now all of a sudden, like the team that tree-built is, I was always saying, the players need to play better. And I'm sorry, that's what I'm going to lay on anybody,

is Ottawa, if they were six in one in their last seven, and there was some online rumblings, people would be like, who cares, they're winning. But when they lost four in a row and lost six of seven and all of that, people are going, there's a distraction here. The team looks off, this looks off, this looks off, the goalie's not available. So there's just chaos tied to it. So that's kind of what, it's a long-winded explanation.

But I come back to, best players have to be your best players, if you're going to win in this league. And, you know, Tim Stutzelah had a 13-game point streak, and he's gone dry. He hasn't scored in seven now. And Brady Kachuk has struggled. And you look at all these guys that are trying to get their game back in order, and then you've got the online distraction.

There's just so much going on. And then you need a save at the right time. Last night, it came together for them against Vancouver. We'll see what they got against the Rangers tonight. I kind of get it now. You hear how he trots out the numbers and expected goals. It's like the stats guys hate scouts. It's like, oh, you need the eye test.

What are your eyes telling you? I get it. I can see why you hate scouts. My first role in my first year out of the league, Darryl Sutter made me a scout. He made me a goalie advisor, all of these things. I was on the scout scouting staff, but I also ended up on Keenan staff near the end of the year.

The point being is I love the scouts. I just always wondered when the comments have, go see this guy. We see them every night. You know what I mean? Like we see them. You and I see. It's not very what Rasmus Anderson is. You're paying attention to last day. That's my point. If you told me like, hey, go watch Rasmus Anderson. I'm like, I've watched him for several years. I know exactly what that guy's capable of. Now, if you want me to go sniff around on him and say, would it be a good fit for the dressing room and what's, you know, what's his deal and all of that? Different story. And I think you'd be great for a lot of dressing rooms, including Calgary Flames.
