Starting point is 00:00:14 Oh, rabbit, rabbit. How are we doing, everybody? I knew it. I knew it. Welcome to the show. How are we doing, everybody? It is a Monday, the first Monday of October. We're in it.
Starting point is 00:00:27 We're in it to win it. Wheels up on another fantastic October. There's retro. Pan down. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Bill's and Lions fan. Yeah. I thought you'd have your Backland shirt on
Starting point is 00:00:44 today it's a flames game day get your helmet on get your black back then shirt's on i spilled i spilled my wings sauce you did i some pizza and wings on it yesterday so now that artwork won't come out in the wash will it or is that uh no possibly fade a little yeah had some people react i really like red's shirt where can we get one of those shirts it's limited edition didn't you have a website for them brett last week just dm me on the external yeah just send me a message on the thing yeah just send me a message on the thing Yeah, me on next. We got a show today for you about,
Starting point is 00:01:17 I'll say about 20 minutes from right now. Frank Zaraveli or NHL Insider is going to join us. Now he was, of course, with us live in the flesh on Friday. But he's back. He's getting ready. Did his Western Canadian swing. And now he's back in his home studio and getting ready for a busy hockey season. How many more of these?
Starting point is 00:01:39 The Flamescrot? Three more? Yeah. They've closed with two on. the road. So this is the final home one mercifully. Not that that matters a lot because I don't mean, you know what? We kind of bitch a lot about it for guys that don't go and don't really pay super close attention. The thing is this week, probably more to pay attention to.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Yeah. They play Edmonton, Vancouver on the road Wednesday, Friday, if I'm correct. And those will be the most regular season like rosters. And if you are going to pay attention to any preseason, do you know that would be the two. Okay, good to know. Although today I was looking, let's take a look at the roster. Here's what we got for the Jets and Flames tonight. As far as I understand, the Jets,
Starting point is 00:02:23 it's going to be Connor Hullabuck going the distance. He played 27 minutes in that game against Calgary last Wednesday. He wants to play each of the last two. They have one more after tonight. So pillar to post, Connor Hellebuck going tonight. I don't know if there's a bit of a flu bug, a bit of a tickle going around.
Starting point is 00:02:41 No Kyle Conner. No Gabe Valardi and Nikolai Elyers is coming back from injury. But outside of that, it's what you would expect from a preseason road roster. Schifley, Niedermeier, Cole Perfetti is obviously a youngster that we know, Nemesnikov, Appleton. Anyway, that's what the jets are sending. Now, as far as the flames, there you go. That's a very veteran-esque roster is what I mean to say.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Markstrom, Wolf, the two goaltenders. There's a lot of D-Men there. It's five or six. Uh, so now let's take a look. Practice yesterday. They broke them down into two groups, courtesy of Ryan Pike from flames nation.ca. Here is a look at the groupings. Very much. This is, this is the, uh, the Daryl Sutter set up from a year ago, except it came halfway through training camp, not at the very start to finish. Hubert O. Elias Lindholm and Andrew Manjapani on the right side. Now that had been a spot that Sharon Govich had been at. Sharon Govich moving to the left side with Backland and Coronado Ruzichke we've seen on the wing with Nazim Cadry
Starting point is 00:03:48 Dylan Dubay, Blake Coleman, Dryden Hunt, Walker Doer Now this was at practice yesterday And as you can see there What's his name? Pike put in there Kevin Rooney skating with that group But then crashed into the boards didn't come back So then it was
Starting point is 00:04:05 You know, they had to move some things around Poor Roondog To the Rundog Poor Rundug And there you see the D pairings. Rasmus, Hannah Fantanav, Zedorov, Austerly. Salovia, people are salivated over Solovia. Solo, they call it.
Starting point is 00:04:21 That's right. Solo. Solo. Yep. So I would, and then this morning, the flames put out their, their rosters for tonight's game. Now, they didn't put the lines, but they put down the players who will be taking part in this game. And it's basically all of those minus Walker Doer. They have Cole Schwint in instead of Dewar.
Starting point is 00:04:45 So you wonder if he'll just slot right in there. So Dryden Hunt, we've talked to him about a little bit. Looks like he's got inside track and that fourth spot on the, as far as the centerman is concerned. And I don't know what they'll do with the goaltenders. It's up to Markstrom. What do you want to do, Jacob? Yeah, they know, they've just announced what they're doing with the goalies.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Markstrom's going to get backed up by Wolf tonight. There you go. There you go. Whether he goes to distance or not, I have not seen, but Markstrom will start. And they haven't been afraid to give guys full games here as they progressed through the preseason. We did a nickname for Hunt guys because I think he's going to make this team. We call him Fudd, like Hunter, Hunt, Elmer Fudd. I'm working here.
Starting point is 00:05:25 It's something. In Dryden, Ontario, they have a, I think it's a big moose or something. That's kind of their, you know, some of these towns have things that, you know, because Chris Longer's from there. I used to drive through there. Thank you, Daryl. There's Daryl. He's checking him from the ranch or the farm.
Starting point is 00:05:50 Yeah. Daryl checking in. Thanks, dude. You know what? Thanks, Dad. Appreciate you tuning in. Appreciate you tuning in. What the hell is I going to say?
Starting point is 00:05:58 Oh, yeah, Dryden, Ontario. What about, let's see here? They got like a big thing. It's like the world's like just parogi or decorated egg or a skunk. Like all these small towns that have something, claim to fame, right? Is Dryden a nice place to live?
Starting point is 00:06:16 Dryden is a unique place. Born in Cranbrook. Yeah, is that? A guy that Calgary's been home for a while for him as well. What's the thing? Anyway, well, okay, yeah, we'll try and come up for some. Oh, Ken. Ken?
Starting point is 00:06:32 I don't like Ken. You know, you don't have to, but it's just a name. sir what's the nickname ken Ken Max the Moose in Dryden Ontario tell me you can't pull that put that together I don't I must have drank way too many alcohols
Starting point is 00:06:48 on the weekend he's focused on other things apparently so yeah there you go that's what we're going to see tonight a very opening dayish roster for the flames as they've got three more to go carine? Can we call him Karim? No
Starting point is 00:07:06 it's got to come up a little bit more organically. Like, what's the Danny Dimes or whatever the other Jones? Yeah, any dimes. You know, that just came up, felt right. Boom, that's how it should go. Which comes to shove. We got a nickname for that guy. We don't for Hunt.
Starting point is 00:07:21 So, you know, I wouldn't write up Benny Dimes yet. Don't want it for us it. Sharon Govich moved off that line. Are they just trying things? You like Manjapani, top line? You care? Probably not. Knowing your group.
Starting point is 00:07:36 I like a nice successful lineup, Dean. So if it works out with Mangapani on the top, perfect. Great. I don't have a strong opinion on it. Let a rip. Let's see what it looks. They haven't been afraid to try stuff.
Starting point is 00:07:53 They were moving guys from bumper positions to elsewhere on power plays. I mean, this is what you have the training cab of preseason for. Savvy is just wheeling and dealing. Big time. That was savvy. Have we had any savvy reports? any updates Mark Savard, new kid in town. Good then, good talk, guys.
Starting point is 00:08:16 This day in Flames history coming up a little bit later for McLeod Law, a flames captain was named captain on this date in 1999. 99. Mm-hmm. Oh. We'll tell you about it coming up. We'll tell you all about it. Pinda Report for Village Honda.
Starting point is 00:08:36 We got our Betway bets. We'll look at the Monday nighter, the Seattle. see hawks are at MetLife, Jet Life Stadium to take on the Giants tonight, Danny Dimes and the Giants. The other Seattle team is done playing. And that's good news for the Blue Jays Dean is they finally lost to Texas. Mariners done. Rhett, I know you've always kind of been a little eh about the locker room celebrations,
Starting point is 00:09:00 champagne and everything. Oh, I've got it. I've got it. Baseball. So they add, now they keep adding wild card spots and they still keep going with the champagne. There was a thing. You win your, you win the pennant.
Starting point is 00:09:14 You deserve. That's a celebration. You have won the National League central. You've won the American League. Whatever. Celebrate and get ready for the playoffs because so few teams make it. Jay's pop and corks. After a loss, yeah. Pop and tops.
Starting point is 00:09:35 I don't know. It's 12 teams out of 30 that get in. So that's still smaller than most sports we follow. but it is a little ridiculous after a loss in which you played all your dusters and you'd already clinched to then spontaneously throw a party. We had the bigger parties too. The teams like didn't Atlanta clinch pendant and a bunch of stuff like two weeks ago? Both that, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:59 I would think so. They're running away with things. Baltimore are the same. Yeah. I have not been measuring the size of the party. I don't know that I can rank them in order of magnitude. Is there a team that hasn't celebrated like this? Do we know?
Starting point is 00:10:15 It seems like it's very much a baseball thing, and they all seem to do it. I just wonder what, it would be headlines. If one of these teams said, you know what, we're not going to do it. We'll celebrate when we get the big one.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Yeah. That would start a trend. I guarantee you. But you know what? Maybe I'm an idiot. Let baseball guys do baseball. I feel like for hockey, this would be idiotic.
Starting point is 00:10:35 No doubt about that. But it's a different grind, right? You play 162 games in like 190 days or whatever. they let them celebrate that freaking miracle. They really don't have to be physically into it. No, it's probably more of the mental wear, I'm trying to be honest. Working six days a week all bleeping summer, you know.
Starting point is 00:10:53 Yeah, yeah. It's a different grind, right? I guess so, yeah. It's like you, boom. Yeah. Different grind than the. Don't they, and don't they celebrate again if they get past, because it'd be like there's the play-in game and then the wild card,
Starting point is 00:11:07 and then you get into the championship, the division series. games, but yeah. Woo, pop. Woo! Pop. Like four or five of these suckers. Win a playoff game. They haven't done it since 2016 and 17.
Starting point is 00:11:17 So how do you feel? How do you feel, Pender? You and Bresti getting all hammered up? I actually, I'm calling him Gibi Y, Y, C right now because you saw his get up. It's been a while. You've got a venue. We've got lots of people confirming attendance. You know, the challenge is my wife lands right around when the eighth inning will be happening.
Starting point is 00:11:38 And I, have to somehow get my children to kid baseball that day. So we're strategizing. I trust in you, right? There's things I'm good at. I can weasel my way to this game. I'm not too worried about you. I mean, as it sits right now, what's your thinking?
Starting point is 00:11:58 Neighbors of the series? No, no, I don't. Go, go, Jay's. Go, how you're going to pull this off? Like, are your parents, your parents aren't in town right now, are they? I think they are. I think we've got mother-in-law here, but she doesn't drive. I definitely could pawn kids off to another baseball dad because they understand the fight.
Starting point is 00:12:16 I'm here to reciprocate. So I think baseball will be fine. It's just the like, hey, I'm not going to get you at the airport. I was going to say, so you get the tough one. You get someone else to take the kids. Yeah. Now I've freed myself up to get the wife. And then it's like, okay, so if I am going to be a superhero and go get her from the airport,
Starting point is 00:12:35 well, now I have to be stone cold sober for the, first seven innings of this game and that's not how I wanted to do this. It's a real conundrum, real pickle. Good news I got over 24 hours to sort it out. Yeah. Any suggestions and comments. Daryl, if you have any advice here, I'd love to see it. Limos. Limbo. Yeah. That would be the move. Babe, I just want you to stretch out. You might be jet-legged. Here's a limo. If Rhett pays his league dues, maybe I can do that. It's the only guy that doesn't paid in fantasy. I paid. You said it. You have it written down.
Starting point is 00:13:12 You're costing me a limo. Text form. Retro, I see you found 900 US in the couch cushions to get to that bills game yesterday. Good on you. Well done. No, I actually found a great deal. Did you? It wasn't nine.
Starting point is 00:13:29 So the cell service by the stadium is horrific. And so I'm driving there. And I'm like, I got the tickets delivered. a ticket delivery. I usually get it that morning. Start digging into it. Hour and a half on the phone in subpar.
Starting point is 00:13:52 Subpar cell conditions. And finally find out that, no, you won't be getting those tickets. Oh dear. Others, you could take those. And I'm like, it's hot out. And I bought tickets that were in the shade. Your favorite spot there?
Starting point is 00:14:10 You're under the cover. Yeah, I really like to be in the shade. So I just canceled and I found some more. Somehow, some way. Shaded seats. Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful.
Starting point is 00:14:24 So closer to kickoff, so more of a deal is what you're saying? Almost the same deal. Actually, the prices had come down. Nice. For better seats? No, same. Same? Pretty much the same.
Starting point is 00:14:38 So not 900. US. So that much. Geez. Well, he had said it was in the not 400, ish range for a seat. There was more, there's, I mean, some of the seats were way more.
Starting point is 00:14:54 Depends on when you buy them. Yeah. And how hot the seller is. How hot was your seller? There's a lot of guys, apparently not very hot. Yeah. Now, you could probably sit in the upper deck somewhere, because it is football.
Starting point is 00:15:08 It's a huge field. You don't really. need to be that close. You can sit higher and get a better. No shade there, buddy. You can get it for 100 US if you went to the top row, worst seat? 200. Yesterday, tickets were
Starting point is 00:15:21 a hot commodity. Beautiful day. Game of the year theoretically. Yes. Huge game. And may I ask, is it all right if I check in on the vibes in Buffalo? The vibes are good. People are happy. Very happy. Low worried few injuries yesterday.
Starting point is 00:15:38 Yes. Treday. AVS, Achilles. Good. Von Miller's coming back. Yeah. No Von Miller, that defense put on a little show for everybody yesterday's. The Bill's beat the dolphins handily. Handily.
Starting point is 00:15:56 Churping my dolphins people, they've beaten nobody that's good. Yes, they've been impressive, but they beat the chargers who are mediocre at best. They beat Denver, who might be the worst team in football, probably the second worst after what we saw this weekend. And they beat someone else that was not terribly impressive. I'm trying to think who it was. It was a one win somebody. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:18 So. Good story. The offense looked good at the start. As soon as the bills started to get a little bit of pressure and figure it out, if they didn't look at. They're in control pretty much what from this? It never felt like they were in danger. You know what?
Starting point is 00:16:34 What was it? Five straight series they went touchdowns? Yeah. Back and forth. back and forth. It fills up by seven through five possessions. And then I think that's where things opened up a little bit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:45 So now Ryan kind of came at you after that week one loss to the Jets and said, hey, just don't overreact. Maybe just, you know, take a beat and, you know, get your knickers out of a twist and relax. And you were, you were not having any of it. I'm, I'm, uh, we're both right. We're both right in that circumstance. There's no damn reason in the world. world to lose to the Jets and Zach Wilson.
Starting point is 00:17:12 Zero reason. Like the team that beat the dolphins and it's won the last three games is the same team. So you're telling me that you can't beat the Jets. Everyone else beats the Jets. Even if they're okay, you still have to beat the Jets. It was clearly not their best day at the office. And my point was like, don't overreact.
Starting point is 00:17:31 They're still a very good team. They're still a Super Bowl contender. And, you know, four games in, the bigger sample, they do look like a Super Bowl. contender. But to your point that day, it was like if there is one little thing you worry about with the bills, it's turning over the football. And that day they were shitty
Starting point is 00:17:46 at it, but they've been pretty damn good since. I think like a clean day for Allen yesterday, only one pick since the Jets week, I think so. Yeah. Like he controlled the ball well yesterday. He was now, if it's because the offense was clicking and the play calls were different and the dolphins
Starting point is 00:18:02 weren't getting much pressure, I don't know, but he there was no prep. Four completions, four touchdowns. Isn't that 21 to 25, 320 and four tetties? How about digs? Diggs! Yeah. It was not a tackling clinic on that
Starting point is 00:18:20 one touchdown that he, yeah. So anybody want to grab him? No, hey. To the house, sir. And then the old stone cold. I like that. Celebrating in the stands with the fans. I like that a lot. Seems happy again. He does seem happy. Happy's good for him. Yeah. He's not always happy. but he seemed happy yesterday.
Starting point is 00:18:40 I was wondering if you went back and watched that week one game, now retro, if you'd see it through a different lens. Now that you know where you're at, you're feeling a little bit more better at three. Well, it's all fine and good, but four and no is still where they should be. Like it's, yes,
Starting point is 00:18:52 whatever, but the Jets lose their main web, the main reason they were going to be, right? Like they lose Rogers early. Yeah. And you still let Zach Wilson led jets beat you. Yeah, No one was going to tell you they played well in that game.
Starting point is 00:19:09 The overarching thought was this is probably as bad as they can look. Three turnovers for the one, three picks for the one defender in the Jets. Now, Ryan, you are there in, uh, in studio just between us. Oh, buddy. It's bad. How's Jack? How's Jack doing? Okay.
Starting point is 00:19:27 He's got the hoodie up, hat on low, hoodie over the hat. Yeah. And, uh, give me that look when he walked in. Like, he's not, uh, I woke up Sunday. I wasn't feeling good. And I knew it was going to be a bad football day. He knew it, I could feel in his bones. Bones.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Steeler fan. Bones. He's not hopping on the jackbox today. Hey, it's very quiet. No, the jack cam needs a little time to cool off. And we'll revisit the picks tomorrow. There's still one game tonight. But safe to say he's not gaining any ground after this week's selections.
Starting point is 00:20:01 He, uh, big Steelers fan. This was going to be a big one against the Texans. Oh, just a horrible Texans team. Terrible Texans. They lose by 24, pickets injured. 24? What was the line, Jack? Or the two, three?
Starting point is 00:20:19 Yeah, we're the dogs. Were the Steelers plus 25 and a half? Were they favored or were they dogs? They were favorites, right? They were favorites, right? They were favorites. Yeah. That's a nightmare fuel that game.
Starting point is 00:20:35 It was kind of a blowout day. There was some blowouts. What, Niners meet the Cardinals, 3516, which feels flattering to the Cardinals. You know what? Give Arizona some credit. Those get them some credit. They're hanging around. They made it to one score game. They're scrappy.
Starting point is 00:20:49 They're scrappy. Whoever they are, those guys. Whoever's playing for them. They're scrappy. Yeah. Cowboys thump the Patriots, 38 to 3. How about the Cowboys? That's the worst loss at Belichick's career, they're saying?
Starting point is 00:21:03 Yeah. And Mack Jones. I mean, have you regressed? Like, Are you a starting quarterback in the NFL? Highly debatable at this point. Seems. I'm kind of regretting my Ramandre Stevenson picking round two, D.
Starting point is 00:21:19 R.A. Yeah. And I was some stack one for second round. It was supposed to set me up for championships. And I was choked when you took them too. I had them right on my radar. I'm like, okay, I'll take Ramandre Stevenson. Ooh, ouch.
Starting point is 00:21:32 So, yeah, the Steelers got thumped. The Titans beat the Bengals, 273. what is happening with Tennessee plus two and a half I believe that was not a sweat at all didn't you have you and jack had the bengals didn't you no I was against the bengals we were against each other I had the bengals that's what I'm saying didn't somebody have the bengals I thought jack did yeah yeah yeah um so and my damn chargers they tried dean they tried to lose that game if not for a rookie quarterback and some they should have they should have they should Should have blown that. They do every week, it seems. They're very, they're very gracious hosts. Even when they're on the road, they don't want to make anybody feel bad or be embarrassed.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Like, hey, we don't want to beat the break straight off. We're at home. Bring all your fans in. We'll let you have half the stadium. And even when we're way ahead, we'll let you back in and give you a chance to win. And sorry, I guess you started this rookie. You can't beat us. We'll have to accept the win today.
Starting point is 00:22:31 If Cropolo is here, we would have lost. Terrible. Terrible. You hate to see it. Um, so yeah, I mean, five teams didn't score a touchdown, lots of blowouts. We got, uh, teams. I'll say I'll go back to the bills game. Uh, it was awesome.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Stadium was rocking as loud as I've ever heard it. But I don't know how many games I've been able to leave early. Huh. Yeah, that was in hand. Right. Like, I need, I want to see some, some last minute stuff. Let's go here. come on dolphins well you could you could see last minute stuff it just wouldn't be with the game you could stay
Starting point is 00:23:15 to watch the other allen play you know you could stick around what's the rush what's the hustle traffic and salesers that's got to get out it gets a lot of money to be playing for three quarters of football it is it is yeah it really is really is yeah but you got the result you wanted you could have stayed for fourth quarter heartbreak and it's a better value, I think. True, I guess. Yeah. Didn't look close there, did it? The first few drives each way, you're like, okay, it feels like somebody,
Starting point is 00:23:50 first team to make a stop and kind of put a little, get a little gap or space between, but it was fun because going back and forth, you're like, oh, boy, like, this is going to be clearly a run and gun scenario. So I don't know. All of a sudden they turned a ball. And I think that there was a play. It got tipped by two bills and should have been intercepted. And instead was a first down for Miami.
Starting point is 00:24:21 And then they scored on that drive. So, I mean, it could have happened earlier in the game for the bills to have the D step up. But I don't know. Is Miami's offense good? It was good last week. It's been good. I almost against two and 70 and the other team
Starting point is 00:24:39 quit and like... Yeah, the Chargers D sucks. And then they destroyed the worst team in football, probably in Denver, one of them. And then I think the other was indie or something like that. Like, yeah,
Starting point is 00:24:51 my thing is that the big question here in Buffalo is going to be, what's the D going to be able to do? Yeah, especially if White So, yeah. He will be for some amount of time. He's done, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:25:01 That's the fear. Usually what it's the, uh, the fear. He has a severed Achilles. Usually those fears are realized. It's like when doctors and when the team staff are fearing that it's an injury. He was done to hear that this is not a severed Achilles.
Starting point is 00:25:19 We weren't completely. As it turned out, he's just got a strained shoulder. We thought it was a severed Achilles. Crazy. They don't miss that one. Do they? No, they don't miss those very often. They do.
Starting point is 00:25:33 It actually just had a tickle on his throat. We were totally wrong about the Achilles. Yeah. He's got a fever. Dr. DeRle, checking back in. Did anyone see Taylor Swift at the Sunday night football game? Yeah, it's a thing, hey?
Starting point is 00:25:44 Thanks, does. Daryl is Swifty? I mean, if he wasn't, he is now, if you wanted to avoid Taylor Swift in your life, where would you go and what would you do? Do you have to move into the woods and have no technology? How do you not know about the existence of Taylor Swift at this point? It's permeated the most macho non-pop music demo of all time, which is like sports fans.
Starting point is 00:26:05 it's an eye-opener for a lot of people who didn't appreciate how big she was if you weren't paying attention and there would be just oh okay she's she's she's pops there no one bigger no she's selling out stadiums there's no one bigger somehow there's no one bigger how i don't i don't know that i get it um i appreciate she's very talented and all of that but what is it about her specifically are her songs that much better is you cannot get tickets to her shows and they're charged actually when I called to get my tickets figured out, they actually said,
Starting point is 00:26:40 are you calling about Taylor Swift tickets? Because you're going to go down a whole different path. Just don't. We were chatting with someone on the weekend, and they're like, yeah, I have tickets in Toronto, and I'm not letting myself look at the resale, because if I know what they're worth, I might have to sell them and I need to go.
Starting point is 00:27:00 That's how much dough there is. Can we embigging that? that's tiny. That's sorry, I didn't mean to be that small. Embiggin? Is that obviously a word? That's a Jack technology term.
Starting point is 00:27:11 Ambigin that, please. That's the NFL page, and it says the chiefs are two and OSifties. Okay. They are two and oh, and they are two and oh, why they keep showing or why do they keep showing or why they keep showing or why does the NFL do anything?
Starting point is 00:27:25 Okay, wait, Jack, here. So NFL, massive, right? Global, right? Yes. How many followers do they have? 28.4 million. Go get Taylor Swift. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:39 She probably has more. She'll have hundreds of millions. Well, and this is my point. Like, if you were wondering why they kept panning to her, it's because the NFL is only interested in one thing, and that's money. And having Taylor Swift on camera as much as possible is great for NBC, the league, for Travis Kelsey jersey sales,
Starting point is 00:27:55 for ticket sales for everything. The more they show her on TV, the more money they'll make, and the NFL is the best in sport at making money. Just merrier. well is that what's best like what's the script here to like don't they need to date a little I don't see a downside I mean if it doesn't work out she's gone through a lot of significant others
Starting point is 00:28:15 how she's what I hear her who are you to judge I'm just I'm just saying maybe she's she's very high standards is Tony DeAngelo who who's in there I don't know I'm not sure who hey we'll get Frank on here in a moment want to mention now tonight flames and jets at the dome get your tickets, do whatever you want to do, go to the game. And yeah, why wouldn't you, why wouldn't you want to come? Jack, are you going to be there? Yes, I will. Aha. You come and soothe Jack's jagged nerves over his football team. Just reassure him. They got Mike Tomlin. Just rub his back, kind of pet him, pet him on the head, take care of him.

Starting point is 00:31:43 Ryan Pike has gone to work over the last couple of days. A lot of tributes and heartfelt messages and condolences coming out to Kelsey Snow and the Snow family. We talked about it right at the end of the show on, I guess it was on Friday or on Thursday, that Chris Snow, who has been, and you know, I hate the lost the battle. If it was a battle that insinuates that there was some winning to be done, there was no cure for ALS. But this guy was a warrior and a champion.
Starting point is 00:32:17 He is truly a hero. And Ryan Pike has put together a couple of things there on Chris Snow and Craig Conroy yesterday talking about it as well. So go to flamesnation.ca and check out those couple stories there. As we tribute Chris Snow, hashtag Snowy Strong. I would guess that there's going to be. be just lasting, the lasting impression and just everything that he's done to help those around him. Emotional days.
Starting point is 00:32:46 It's been an emotional time. I know in talking to some of the people down at the rink, this has been a tough, a tough few days. And you had the Michael Backlin is getting the captaincy. And then the news came out about Chris Snow. It's just been, there's emotions have been high, you can say, for, for the flames at this time. Go check that out at the website. Some nice stuff there as we remember Chris Snow. Nothing.
Starting point is 00:33:11 Hang on. Hang on. Cere Valley. Technical issue. Technical issue on the. It's usually our end. It is usually our end. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:20 It is usually our end. Yeah. Bust his balls. Pardon me, Ryan? Or Redden me have technical issues on Friday. I did. I don't know what that one was about. We were trying to link up with you,
Starting point is 00:33:31 and I think we had so many tech issues. We ran out. at a time. Jacko, can you get us up to be doing what the hell happen? Yeah, so if you're wondering why Frank looked like so bright in the light bulb is because basically we bought this new camera. We had it all set up. It looked really good.
Starting point is 00:33:48 And then we started the show and it turned off. So then we put the old camera back in and Frank put up like a light bulb. But we made it work. Two very different cameras. One is more of a webcam kind of a thing and it's built to work. with little to no light. So it overexposes everything.
Starting point is 00:34:09 So it's super duper bright. Whereas with the real camera, you need some proper lighting. So it went from the lighting that we had quite bright for a regular camera to then burning Frank's forehead. I love because Frank is a lot like you boom. He doesn't like technical difficulties. I don't believe. No. It gets frustrated.
Starting point is 00:34:28 Frank's tolerance is extremely low for it. It's fair. Trying to be professional here. When I get the texts from across the room from cranky Sarah Valley. WTF. You know what, though? He's a pro. He's worked SportsNet, TSN, Bally Sports.
Starting point is 00:34:49 This guy's, he's a big swinging D. He's got no time to put up with people's BS and technical issues. And he joins us now. I hope. I hope there's no technical issues as we bring in. Oh! We're an HL insider, Frank Sarah Valley. Hello, Frankie boy.
Starting point is 00:35:06 Yeah, sorry. Excuse me for having standards. Oh, wow. What's up with your mic? I think you've got the wrong mic on right now. Are you on your... I'm hearing more of an echo than I usually hear with you. Oh, boy.
Starting point is 00:35:21 I don't think so. It's all good. Correct, Mike. Oh, okay. Well, you sound like shit. Well, thanks. Standards. Hey, Calgary, left.
Starting point is 00:35:34 a literal bad taste in my mouth. Oh, here we go. Hopefully not me to blame. Go ahead. So I wheeled out of the studio, headed over to the airport, get on my flight. And for five hours on the way back to Newark,
Starting point is 00:35:52 I sat next to a guy that smelled like a human garbage pile. It was the, like, I've been flying like 100,000 miles a year for 15 years. And it was like the most painful flight I've been on. It wasn't him specifically. It was actually his breath. And anytime he opened his mouth, it was literally like he was breathing hot poop into my area.
Starting point is 00:36:23 He was to Copenhagen. Well, it's these guys from New Jersey. Those New Jersey, how do you know? It's not where were you flying? He's just heading home, Frank. Try to get them home. It was like,
Starting point is 00:36:33 honestly like I when I was leaving I was like dude like you got to fucking do something like I got off the plane I was like you stink so bad I I've never seen anything like it seek help immediately like I don't know what's going on in your mouth but your teeth are falling they must be you're rotting did you slide some gum across your yeah I actually like I got a piece of gum myself and then I put it right on the tray table so that he would see it and I was kind of like and he used just so oblivious. Get that pack of tick-tacks is just kind of rattles. It's going to rat out.
Starting point is 00:37:08 I get a mentor here. Not for me. Hot poop. That's what this guy smelled like. Because I'm, yeah, it's the worst kind of poop, I would guess. Why is it a person of Calgarian? Or you just say it originated in Calgary,
Starting point is 00:37:25 so you're going to lump it on the city of Calgary? All I said was it left a literal bad taste in my mouth. That's all. So you got back home. Wait, hold on a second. Hold on. This is the first time I've seen Rhett in like, I don't know, five months. Rhett, like you're, did you slim down the summer?
Starting point is 00:37:44 You're looking good. You lean out. Wear black. I wear black shirts. I don't think so, Frank. No. Dude, your neck is thinner. Everything's thinner.
Starting point is 00:37:54 Uh, beneath a lot of X-lax. I ate pizza and wings literally from about 11, o'clock till 9 o'clock yesterday at the bill's stadium and then when i got home and i also went for ice cream yesterday so i appreciate the compliment i don't know that it's you're like the rock though the rod your cheat day you have those cheat days like the rock when he has the pancakes and waffles and stuff that's that was your cheat day you won't be doing that today will you are you fasting today right no but i ate too many sausage today i've got these state fair sausage
Starting point is 00:38:31 they're called from this butcher down the street. They're phenomenal. They got veggies in them and cheese, like little chopped up onions and peppers and cheese. Oh, phenomenal. It is phenomenal. So Western Canada, any lasting impressions? We talked to you on Friday's show
Starting point is 00:38:49 because you go Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, you got the tone and tanner of all of them. There's obviously there's excitement here. I guess not excitement. Levity. spirits are high. The mood, the morale is high.
Starting point is 00:39:03 In Edmonton, maybe a little tight due to the pressure. There's real expectations there that this is, that they've got a team that can do this and in Vancouver. Let's be better if we can. Is that fair to say? Yeah, I think you summed it up pretty nicely. What I would say is in Calgary, it was really interesting talking to you guys
Starting point is 00:39:26 and I wish I got some pushback from Rhett on this. but the market is so much more down on the team than everyone else is. I've been saying this whole summer. It's not only that, but like the team themselves are like, we're the underdogs in our own city. It's kind of, they're not saying the city part of it, but that's kind of how they feel.
Starting point is 00:39:48 And I feel like that's actually a pretty powerful. So can I jump in there? So I'll say this. I'll get a shit for saying this as well. that's because not everyone because you can't paint everyone with the same brush but a large majority of flames fans aren't true die in the I don't know what the same die in the wool that's the word hardcore hardcore flames fans they're casual hockey observers and there happens to be an NHL team in their city.
Starting point is 00:40:26 I would say, and people argue, and again, be mad at me. Oilers fans are more die hard for sure than the people in Calgary. So I have a theory on that. It's, I believe it. It's not, well, it's a criticism, I guess,
Starting point is 00:40:43 but I think it's also a reality. I think you've got more corporate type fans in Calgary than you do blue collar oilers fans. And it is what it is. but it's easier to be nitpicky of your team when you aren't a buy everything just because they're
Starting point is 00:41:00 their their team type of fan right and that's that's not what is in calgary it's for wrong or for right and whether their opinion on the team going to be successful or not you can have different opinions but i don't think the fans are as true blue fans as a lot of the cities
Starting point is 00:41:18 correct me if I'm wrong but is the reasoning for that isn't Calgary just a more transient market than others? Like there's a lot of people that are in Calgary that aren't from Calgary. That's part of it. I would also just say, look, like, I think Calgarians are like, this is entertainment. In Edmonton, they're like, this is religion. It's just a different level.
Starting point is 00:41:38 And to be fair, there's lots of other things to do here that, you know, you don't live and die with wins and losses like you do in these blue color markets like Buffalo and Edmonton. I'll tell you what, too. And I think I agree with Frank. I think there are some people who have, there's a lot of people that didn't, they were not born and raised.
Starting point is 00:41:52 Ryan, you are, but not, they're not, they're, I guess, I guess changed, I guess changed, but I know when I, you go back and it's just a lot of people move to Calgary that weren't Calgarians, but more than that, if you're in your 40s and you're in Edmonton, you watch that team win five Stanley Cups, and then they won a first round draft pick with Taylor Hall. And then they did it again. And then they've got the greatest player in the world. If Calgary had that kind of legacy and had Carter McDavid and had that much. It would be different. It just would be. You would have more people who are on that bandwagon or just are those dyed in the wool. There hasn't been outside. They went in 04. They've won, what, a couple playoff rounds since then. That's when I think you, those casual fans become
Starting point is 00:42:41 the hard course. They then start to really follow the team. And then they know more about the team. there isn't that here. Okay, but none of that explains and or forgives. Like I get the dynamics and I get what Rhett's saying, but why is it that the rest of like the 31 other markets are like, oh, Calgary, pretty good team, like only missed by two points last year and has mostly the same team and a new coach and a new GM on a fresh feel.
Starting point is 00:43:11 And it's like, how many of those guys really watch the Calgary Flames over the last few years? Do you know what I mean? Like it's easy. Like let's take me then, for instance, and I'll remove everyone else, and I've already given you guys my take. But let me reiterate. I think this is a really good team that had just about everything that could go wrong
Starting point is 00:43:31 for it last year did. And that's not going to happen again this year. So, sorry, what went wrong for the flames last year? All of the one goal losses, 11, is it 11 overtime and shootout losses? the blown third period leads, the poor play from Jacob Markstrom. But that's not bad luck. That's bad play.
Starting point is 00:43:56 Those tend to even out over time, though. That's a team that hated itself last year. I said this to Frank too on Friday, right? I said the thing about this fan base is they've been fooled too many times. They've been left. They've been that kid sitting on the doorstep with the fishing pole waiting for the dad to come get them. they have been disappointed so many times.
Starting point is 00:44:17 This team needs to win back. I'm trying to remember emotional equity. Wasn't that what Ken King always used to call it? Intellectual honesty. You put a lot of intellectual or a lot of collateral into the bank. So you were going to be able to make some slip-ups here and there, but you had those fans because of what you were able to do, that equity that you built up.
Starting point is 00:44:35 There's not a lot of equity here. They watched Goodrow leave. They watched Kachuk leave. Huberto came in, had an awful season. They are always middle of the pack. there's some and some of the fans want them to be bad so they could get up and get one of those high draft picks they've been in that uh this is the trademark mushy middle for ryan pinter the mushy middle and i think the flyers are kind of one of those teams i it's hard to get overly disenchance
Starting point is 00:45:01 you don't hate them they become hard to love it's easy to look at the team and go they could be really good they could be really good but you can also say well they should should have been really good last year and weren't. And to argue only one thing I will say, and it's not even an argument, they had no effing injuries at all. They're going to be more hurt this year. There's no doubt about it.
Starting point is 00:45:24 So if you even out, if you lose a couple of players, does that, you know what I mean? So all the things that didn't go right for them last year, they still had that go right. And they were still 90%, 95% of that team last year was the team that won the division. Did they win the conference?
Starting point is 00:45:44 They won the division two years ago. They won the division two years ago. So I think that people have been let down and that's basically why. I don't see this as like these fans aren't hardcore enough. I see that as the people that invest time and, you know, their hearts in this team have been let down very recently and very often and quite regularly by whatever group has been wearing this jersey. And so the further you get away from this market, the more people are rational and less emotional. All these sports books have them is you've got to lay a lot of money to win 100 bucks for the flames to make the playoffs. Like, Rhett doesn't think necessarily that they're better than 50-50 to get in the playoffs, but all the sports books do.
Starting point is 00:46:22 And so I don't know that it has anything to do with blue-collar, white-collar, entertainment dollars, hardcore fans. These people have been emotionally burned and don't think this team, I can't do this again. Whereas elsewhere, you're like, yeah, yeah, this is due for regression. For right or for wrong, there's Daryl Sutter effect, too. don't tell me that there's not 25% of the fan base out there that it's almost a Trumpish following. Come on. I'm not joking, man.
Starting point is 00:46:51 They fucking believe in Daryl Sutter. If anyone even paid attention a little bit last year. You can argue whatever you want. It's the same thing as arguing. The team is going to be good this year because he's not here. Why were they good two years ago when he was here, though? It was an easy argument for people to make that believe in what he was. I think you're the, so I think Rhett is like the president of like whatever you call it,
Starting point is 00:47:15 no filter media. Like he's just going to just, he's going to be leading the Sutter, the Sutter truthers to victory. I've just given you an opinion on what actually I, there are people, you're telling me, wait, not you, Frank, but Ryan and Boom, that you don't think there's 25% of the Flames fan base that think Daryl Sutter would, the fuck, they used to show up with signs. Darrell we trust like in reference he was with fear
Starting point is 00:47:44 we're saying in head season they'll figure it out in Darrell we trust I think the group of people who think that Darrell had to go outnumbers those people now for sure
Starting point is 00:47:54 but that still doesn't mean there's not a large that you ask about why there's a negative vibe towards a team these are reasons I'll say this though I think if you were to ask
Starting point is 00:48:04 or if you were to tell fans that you crystal ball it and say this is actually a good team this year and they do make the playoffs. It should not be hard, to your point, Frank. It should not be hard to explain how or why. Well, the goalie was better. And Manjapani got back to his mid-20s flirting with 30 pace and Dubay gets 18 or 20 or 21 and Sharon Govich is okay and Lindholm's a little bit better. It should not be hard to build the case or an example as to how this is going to work. But I do think it's a jaded group here that's been stung. So right now, it's, they've been
Starting point is 00:48:39 left at the altar. But they don't even need all of those things to happen to make it. They still only missed by two points. Did you watch them down the stretch? This is another thing. So look, don't pull the bullshit of that with me. Did you watch this team? Yes, I saw the crappy goal that Jacob Markstrom led in the third period in St. Louis in December and January. Yes, I saw all these other things. I saw it all. I watched it. But to be that bad and to still only miss by two points is insane. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:17 I would speak to their effort, though, not just bad luck. Like, there were games where they had a chance against last place teams. Yeah, the Blackhawks in the last 10 days of the season. I get it. But that's my argument is that even if you don't put any stock in Darrell Sutter, even if you think he's the worst coach and they hated him, isn't it? Shouldn't it be a fuck?
Starting point is 00:49:39 we're going back to last spring's conversation. This is stupid, but shouldn't the players want to win to make the playoffs so that they can play on the playoffs? And when you see the effort that the players give against a team like Chicago, it does make you go, wait a minute. This shouldn't be about the coach. Hate the coach all you want. You guys are points away from making the playoffs,
Starting point is 00:50:04 and you didn't even fucking show up. I think that's the way. one question mark that I have, aside from, you know, the different performance things that you indicated that we've talked about are possibilities good and or bad. Is there was something about the chemistry of last year's team where not only did they not like the coach, I never really got a sense that they liked each other. And that is when you don't have much roster turnover, that is a real thing. So we've been lied to about that as well, sorry.
Starting point is 00:50:42 No, every year it's a tight group. It's such a close. Love each other, love each other. But then you watch them play and you go, it doesn't pass a smell test. What you're telling me is that, oh, we're so tight and we care about each other. And we're all in it together.
Starting point is 00:50:58 And then kind of play like you don't give a shit. This doesn't make sense to me. Anyway, so what about, let's talk maybe more about the pathway to getting in. We'll start with the division. And we could just kind of rapid fire. We can go around the horn. Vegas Golden Knights, they win the cup. What's the expectation this year?
Starting point is 00:51:15 Still a playoff team, I would guess. Obviously, across the board, we still see this as a very strong team. I don't know what they, I don't know where they really take a backward step. They're going to bring most everybody back. Still look very strong. I'll just give you my Pacific Division in order. Okay? Yeah, hit me.
Starting point is 00:51:34 Edmonton won, Vegas to L.A. 3, Calgary. for Vancouver 5 Seattle 6 San Jose 7 Anaheim 8 There's people suggesting this is the toughest division in hockey this year with the deletions the bruns have made I think that was me And that was kind of one of the things I was
Starting point is 00:51:54 And that's why I wanted to go there Because I do think Edmonton, Vegas, Los Angeles look to be very strong Los Angeles at near the end of the season They were no fun at all You have the flames ahead of the Cracken. I guess
Starting point is 00:52:08 I have the Flames and Canucks ahead of the Cracken. Everything went right for Seattle last year, just like everything went wrong for the flames last year. So you're seeing regression the other way, Frank? Yeah, I mean, I'm hard pressed to think that Jared McCann's going to shoot 19% again and score 40 goals. They had all 18 skaters on their team had 20 or more points, which is like a banana's number.
Starting point is 00:52:34 their depth production was insane i don't mind the way that they're constructed i also just think unless you're getting a massive step out of mattie baneers this is a team with no star and i don't trust their goaltending we've got 95 or 99 games of philip grubauer in a seattle cracking uniform and his save percentage is like 893 yeah so that to me they're the biggest wild card in the division and that says a lot because we talk about the flames being a wild card but I don't know what to make of Seattle
Starting point is 00:53:13 and Is Shane Wright poised to ever make an impact or is that? Well, they got a special exception it's the first one ever given for Shane Wright to not have to go back to junior so that would indicate to me that their plan at least is to start him in the AHL which is kind of crazy.
Starting point is 00:53:35 But I think he's a long way off. He wasn't even watching, I mean, yes, I'm one of the few people I feel like on the planet that was tuned into the Calder Cup final last year. He wasn't an impact guy. He wasn't a star. And the HAL is a hard league, but I'm sorry. Like you got to really learn to dominate there first. Tough division, for sure. That's, you know, I don't know that they're going to be, I just don't know out of those top teams,
Starting point is 00:54:11 barring catastrophe in Edmonton with either goaltending or injuries and the same in Vegas. And then who knows with L.A., but they, man, they sure seem to be pointed in the right direction. I worry about L.A.'s net mining, but I love the ads they've made. I think they're deep. But it's, yeah, they got like David Riddish, Cam Talbot and Phoenix Copplay there. Like which one of those goalies is a better goalie than the one you're going to roll out? I know, but Copley was good. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:54:36 We said the same thing with Aden Hill. Like, so did he not get wins? He had a 903, which is like below league average, but went 24, 6, and 3. Like, good luck trying to do that again with those numbers. Well, we'd have loved a 903 here. And you guys have seen Cam Talbot. Obviously, there's a trust factor with Todd McClellan that makes sense. I just can't imagine taking a roster.
Starting point is 00:55:03 that's that deep with that center ice position and some like legitimate defenders on your blue line. And then being like, we're going to bet all 83.5 million dollars on a total of $2.5 million in net. I just, I don't like does not compute. I'm sorry. Yeah, and it could work. I mean, no one had Aiden Hill winning anything ever. So like, but I'm with you, Frank. It feels like that's a team that if we want to take seriously to beat a Colorado with Dallas and Edmonton, they're going to have to go upgrade their net mining midseason, aren't they? Here's the craziest part that no one really talks about with Aden Hill and the playoffs is like he was not the starter to start the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:55:50 Like, it's kind of crazy and that. And then everyone goes to extremes, right? So then like, L.A. watches Vegas and they say, oh, well, they didn't really spend that much on goal tending and it's all about system and it's all about the guys in front of him and we're going to try and duplicate that with Cam Talbot who has spent really the bulk of last season injured and even when he played was sub 900 there's like that's a real question mark I think and like a legitimate one maybe they maybe they're fine maybe they're not just looking here just could kind of come back on the flames there the whole offseason the story was
Starting point is 00:56:35 the impending UFAs. Tofoli is traded. Backland has re-signed. We like to believe history has shown us that players on expiring deals, contract years, their play elevates, that they do play a lot better looking for that deal. I wonder how it impacts this team.
Starting point is 00:56:56 Guys like Lindholm and Hanif and guys, this is a big potential payday coming for them. I do wonder if it's as simple as seeing them get that much better, or we've also seen distractions can take this team down into the deep water last year for sure. Okay, so Pinder, you were just talking about Vegas sports books, and you won't find this line there, but I'm going to give you one. Okay. I think it's a better than 50% shot, actually significantly better,
Starting point is 00:57:26 that the flames have Elias Lindholm locked up before opening night. Before opening night. So in a week? Yes. they're trying hard to get that done i think hanifin is a long long shot and here's what i'll say about the rest of the team first off it's incredibly motivating as you mentioned to have a good contract year you put the onus on the player to go out and perform but two i really like that there's flexibility on what i'll call the off chance that what happens if things are shit this year do you want
Starting point is 00:58:05 17 guys locked up for the future or do you want an ability to reshape and remold things? I don't think it's a bad thing having a bunch of guys that are up. So then are you okay with them going and getting Lindholm? If they're bad and they've locked Lindholm until he's 36, that feels like nightmare fuel. It could be, but I also think really good players are hard to find and acquire and you try and keep the ones that you can. I don't have a problem with keeping limb home until he's 36. I think he'll be a very good defense. You know, he's in that same mold.
Starting point is 00:58:41 He's going to give you very quality minutes, even at his mid-30s. Why are you laughing, though? I don't want him making $9, $10 million. What's the number you're comfortable with? I don't know. And we've had, God, Fred, we've had this. Comfort would come from not having the other guys at that age for that long. you're talking about Uighur and Huberto.
Starting point is 00:59:04 Not Weger. Weger, I think, is present. Heard's 33 in a few days here. That's contract's not going to be too onerous. Six years left. Huberto and cadre? Better perform. We're the new Rhett Warner?
Starting point is 00:59:20 What do you mean? Over read? I don't know. Just no. I don't know. Every Sunday? What are we talking about here? I think he's a he's a congenial guy,
Starting point is 00:59:31 likes to have fun last name begins with a W. Artie planner. Yeah. And Rhett obviously likes his game in the last few months of the season. Didn't like it at the start. No, you didn't. You were all over
Starting point is 00:59:49 that guy like white on rice for the first couple. It was fucking terrible. So what do you think, Frank? It's going to be Max term, I would guess. And what's the number. If I were to guess, I would say eight times eight seven five. And it's a pure guess. I like a sub nine a whole lot more than over nine. And I was expecting to say nine and a quarter. So I feel better than I thought I was going to feel when you said that. I mean, maybe I'm off.
Starting point is 01:00:21 But the thing is the only way that he can sign for aid is to be traded. And things would have to go pretty wrong for that to happen. Yeah, you're saying term, not dollars. Eight. you mean eight years max term. Yeah, meaning like he gets the extra eighth year that no one else can provide unless the wheels fall off this year and he's traded before the deadline. Yeah. I don't. Big Excel there.
Starting point is 01:00:48 I know. Honest, the league is getting younger. It's all about these young, high octane talent that are coming into the league. And the flames are potentially in a spot where they're giving a lot of money to guys in their late 20s heading into their 30s. It feels like we're not paying attention.
Starting point is 01:01:13 Okay. Where are you going to get those guys? I understand. You have to bottom out and the flames are so far from bottoming out. I know. With Huberto and Weger and Cadre and all these guys. How are you ever going to get there? Sell.
Starting point is 01:01:29 The franchise? That would help a bit. Do we have a buyer, Frank? but you've still got what stinks is I like Lindholm I would be okay if he was the one even with the Hubertoe deal or whatever and if Huberto bounces back
Starting point is 01:01:48 then suddenly that one doesn't feel as bad you're you're kind of saying throw good money at bad money though Frank and how are you going to get there well can I pause for a moment let's back up
Starting point is 01:02:03 He's Rhett Miss Friday. Red Miss Friday. And that's fine. He's a half-miler. Let's back up. Let's go back to the beginning of our conversation in which I just pointed out all of the things about why I think this is a good team. So are you saying that the flames can't compete? Like if that's your argument, then sell all day long.
Starting point is 01:02:29 And I'm not like, I'm not bash. You might be right. Well, I actually, if you want my honest opinion, yes. in this group, which I tend to be, then I think you got to sign him. So, sorry, I stepped on you and I didn't hear everything, but the question he asks is, do I think they compete? And I don't. Well, then your assumption and assertion is correct.
Starting point is 01:02:55 And I've, I've kind of preached it since I think it all fell apart, not in an, and not in a blame sort of scenario at all when those guys, well, I think it all fell apart when Sam Bennett didn't turn out to be what they expected him to be. And they moved on from him. And the build that they had put in place started to unravel. Bennett left. Monaghan got injured. Goddrow didn't want to stay and Kachuk left.
Starting point is 01:03:19 To me, that was a shit. We'd built something real good. We had an opportunity to have a core group of guys that had come up together that believed and wanted to play with each other and growing together, like a Bruins or an L.A. or, you know, those are important components to play in a team sport. And that was their opportunity to take a hard right and go, you know what? We've been handed a shit sandwich to none of our, we tried to manage this as best we could. It's not a criticism of Trilliving.
Starting point is 01:03:52 Goddrow made it a choice. And so did Kachuk and Monaghan. I don't think they should have traded them in the first to bring in cadre, which is kind of what they had to do. But the point when Goddrow and Kachuk decided they weren't. coming back was the point that the flames should have absolutely went, we'll go the other way and restart this thing. And I've kind of preached it since it happened.
Starting point is 01:04:14 I'm hoping, well, I'm not hoping. I don't care if I'm wrong or right, but I don't think they're good enough to compete. And I think they're going to pay these guys. And I think they're going to get too old and their chance to get, maybe they are stuck. Their chance to, for me, making the playoffs isn't the number one priority. I want to have a good team.
Starting point is 01:04:34 for a long time. And I'm okay with some headaches of trying to build that out. So I would respond to that by saying, one, internally, I can tell you that the flames actually talked about that and were thinking about that, but then felt with some of the other defensemen that they had, this is pre-Shillington issue. This is, you know, pre-trading for, you know, Huberto and Weger, Markstrom coming off a 922 season. They're thinking Markstrom until his contract is up, plus the defensemen we have and some of the ancillary pieces up front were a lot closer to competing than not. And to then begin tearing it down, it was a real conversation.
Starting point is 01:05:20 It was like, what should we do? They actually thought about it, talked about it. And it was an open dialogue. They didn't go that way. And so now my argument would be since you've committed and you've got these got Hubert O and Uyghur and Qadry aren't going anywhere, you don't have any choice now. And it's not good money after bad. It's just that you're already lock in regardless.
Starting point is 01:05:46 So you might as well just try and do everything you can to get there. That's how I see it. You think of Vegas when they miss the playoffs, obviously before this most recent seasons. So there's, you preach patience and you bring that, let's bring everybody back and it's a hit. But the problem is two years ago, that team that beat Dallas in round one and then got yarded by the Oilers,
Starting point is 01:06:10 that team isn't the same team now. You lost Goddrow and Kachuk from that team when you bring that team back this year. You know, if those guys were still here, then I'd be like, yeah, let's continue to build. Continue to build with that group. It just does, I don't know. I think, you know what, I think they probably. But let's wait and find out at least what that answer is because, again, let's rewind the last summer when we were having this same conversation in October saying, oh, Uberto is just a one-for-one replacement for Goddrow.
Starting point is 01:06:42 And Cadre is going to come in and be Kachuk light. Neither one of those things happened. But what happens if this year, Uberto does give you 90 to 100 points, which I bet you he does? that's what he missed Friday, Red. We want to repeat that nice and loud? Yeah. This is the 80, yeah, yeah. Eubertoe barnstorming tour.
Starting point is 01:07:07 It's not about, to me, it's not about this year. It's it is what are you building. And for this year, I don't think they're too old. I think there's skill there. I think they can be a good team. It's just when you're talking about adding these long term contracts, it's about three years from now. When it comes time to pay a Coronado or a Peltier or whoever else,
Starting point is 01:07:26 else you hope has come into the, you'll have so much money dedicated to guys in there now early to mid 30s. That's when I, I don't worry about them being old today. It's in three years, four years from now. And you're still going to be right in the teeth, right in the heart of all of those long-term contract. The cap's going to be $100 million then. I'm not worried about paying those guys at all.
Starting point is 01:07:50 The bit, the best problem you could have would be having to worry about paying those guys. Yes. I just looked at it. I think it'll surprise people. Like, Calgary Flames are the 12th youngest team in the NHL. And it's training camp, so there's some bodies hanging around. It's not perfect. But we'll look again after final cuts and see.
Starting point is 01:08:07 I think if I'd asked you guys, you would have thought they were one of the 10 oldest. They're one of the 12 youngest. Well, but that's what I mean. When you have that many old guys committed long term, that's going to skew. That's going to start going the wrong way, right? Right.
Starting point is 01:08:20 It's just that they're not old yet, would be my point. You got rid of Lewis. You got rid of Luchich. You're bringing in Coroner. you're bringing in Peltjeone's healthy. Doer has just arrived. Wolf will join this team in a full-time capacity in the next 12 months.
Starting point is 01:08:31 Like, there is a turnover to youth that's already happening here. And then you're going to sprinkle in a czari and like you keep going down the list. Hunzak, yeah, sure. Yeah. You don't worry all you want. Like, I mean, that's what you guys,
Starting point is 01:08:51 you guys are good at worrying. Every, every GM and, well, not every. Edmontons, I think there's a handful of GMs in the league that are fairly confident in what they have and what the end of the season is going to look like as in yes, we'll be in the playoffs and our success will be Toronto. Toronto success will be gauged by how deep they go.
Starting point is 01:09:15 Can they get to a cup? Can they win a cup? The flames are the other 80% of the teams. We should make the playoffs. We can be competitive. Why not be that? And we'll never know like I said, I don't think they, I don't think they're a cup competitor.
Starting point is 01:09:36 Could they make the playoffs? Sure. Do I wish they'd have turned over the roster and gone young? Absolutely. I don't buy into what I saw last year. And I would have preferred youth over what we're talking about. But that's every GM, that's 25 out of 32 GM. that are talking the same way.
Starting point is 01:10:00 And we're never going to know the scenario that I prefer because they're not doing that. They signed Vaclund. There's no time machine alternate universe to see. Yeah, right. Buffalo's on their third rebuild and other teams, they turn it around quick and they're like, Jesus, that was easy.
Starting point is 01:10:15 You look at LA. You're like, holy shit, they're good again. Frank, we'll let you get out of here. Appreciate you. Over time for your Eagles to beat the commanders. Jesus. They should be one and three, right now.
Starting point is 01:10:28 The fact that it was a two and two, New England gave him a scare. Four and oh is, it's crazy. How did the race go on Saturday? What was the barn burner heat like? Oh, it was good, man. We had a hell of a time. You know what? I think we should, we should buy a horse.
Starting point is 01:10:44 Yeah, that sounds like something I would do. I'm in. Does it sound fun and I'll lose money? Yep, I do that. Yeah, does it sound like a stupid thing to put the waste money on? Yeah, that's, I'm in. I mean, what, what do the Canadian Trotter's cost. I don't know, to be honest. It's probably best, again, probably best I don't know,
Starting point is 01:11:04 because you're right. If we throw some money in it. So at Century Downs, is it, is it, is it, is it, it was harness racing, right? No, third. Oh, it's there. Oh, well, then let's, well, I'm in. Seriously. Okay, great. Tell me how much, Red, I'll just take it off. You can, you can, chip in my portion from that bet. Yeah. Did you, did now, did the whiskey bet get, uh, rectified or what? Rette reached out to me. and I had said to Frank, I'm going to get you a bottle. Rhett's got a lovely price range. I know the perfect place.
Starting point is 01:11:34 We're going to go shopping. And Frank said, believe that. I've got carry on. I'm not hammering a bottle before I get back to Philly. This isn't going to work. I probably should have with the way that guy smelled. That might help. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:11:45 Pass out. Frankie, good to talk to you, buddy. Every Monday. Frank Cerriveli and H.L. Insider are going to join us. We'll talk to you in a week, buddy. See you guys. There you go. Frank Stero Valley.
Starting point is 01:11:54 So, I mean, a lot of opinion and a lot of discussion that we've had. over and over again, but I guess the one thing that I pull out of there, and who knows, he is bullish on the potential signing of Lindholm in the next week to 10 days. That's the big news in there, and that it's quiet on that front. Elias had the most non-committal remarks of all the free age, even including Hannafin, with the Flames Golf tournament, which was only a couple weeks ago or three weeks ago. So that is a development of sorts. you wonder we talk about a lot of what for Elias Lindholm what what's the list of here here's what I need to be happy
Starting point is 01:12:38 you know money winning community proximity to home friends in the locker I don't know I just wonder I wonder what it is Scandinavian teammates right pickled herring honestly like I do wonder if If his buddy is, he's buddies with Markstrom and Anderson and now Backland's staying for three more. I don't know. So the math, if you're just looking at dollars, it's important to emphasize what Frank Noah, which is the eighth year. If you gave him eight and three quarters a year, which is what Frank floated, that's a 70 million dollar contract. The most he can get as a free agent's a seven year deal. If you think someone's going to give Elias Lindholm 10 million a year, his agent should say, don't take that money.
Starting point is 01:13:23 We can go shopping in free agency. I don't know that he'll get offered 10 in free age. I can get over 9, but that would be leaving money on the table if we're strictly just looking at the contract. This is like we're doing the Godreau thing all over. It really is. And he did leave a lot of money on the table to not be here.
Starting point is 01:13:39 I don't think he planned it out that way, but he did. Johnny probably left 12 to 15 million bucks on the table. Yeah. But you're not wrong. But when you start getting into those big money contracts, that extra year. Yeah. I don't know what we're right.
Starting point is 01:13:54 You talk about a lot. There's taxes. all this sort of thing. I'm sure that his agent, they've got it all figured out. Potential, potential destinations, who is going to maybe give you 10 million a year?
Starting point is 01:14:05 Who is it going to cause all of that? Just random thought. Yeah. How many most games ever played by a flame are we going to have here? Because if Lindelm, no, seriously,
Starting point is 01:14:22 he's playing a lot. If he got to have, 25, so. He was that old? Was he that old? No, 23. No,
Starting point is 01:14:29 he wasn't that old. He was out of entry level. How old is he now? His rookie year. No, you're right. He didn't get her. He would have 22. 21, 22, yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:38 You're right? He was a wee babe. And he's played all of them. I'm not like, it's not a shot. I had the list earlier. That was the Monaghan draft, correct? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:47 He was the pick after, before. Before, before I think, yeah. I got the all time Flames game played list. Like, Backland is going to hit a thousand early next season.
Starting point is 01:14:55 he's 92 games away. Lindholm, I'm scrolling, scrolling, scrolling, scrolling, scrolling. He's 36. He's got less than 400 games as a flam. All right. So if you had 600 on an eight-year deal, that's still, that only gets him to where Backland is now. But it's top five, maybe, if he's healthy.
Starting point is 01:15:20 I would have thought more. But anyway, I just, he was, I knew it was. You know what it is, Redd? He had 56 game season, 70 game season with the pandemic. That's hurt him a bit. Let's do the Pinder report. It's presentation of Village Honda. You talk about the races.
Starting point is 01:15:37 Everybody Anthony was up at the race. It brought his little man. Pinder had his kid there. Pinder degenerate teaching how odds work and how much he was going to win if the horse came in, that sort of thing. Love that bad fat kid, doesn't he? Yeah. The other one likes,
Starting point is 01:15:49 the one that likes chaos was there. Yeah, this one likes, quite a tandem at the horse race. This one likes handguns and whiskey. This one likes pop drinks and weapons. Pinder Report. For Village Honda located in the Northwest
Starting point is 01:16:03 Automall, your dealership for life, go talk to Anthony. Ask how he did it at the races. Asked to see where all his winnings are from the track on Saturday. Let's do it. Village Honda presents the Pinder report.
Starting point is 01:16:17 All right, fellows. We'll start as Dean you alluded to some new lines on the weekend. Pike has more at Flames Nation. Say pike bombs. He made a graphic from him. You see that? Look close.
Starting point is 01:16:28 Like bomb. Like bomb. Those lines, Dean alluded to, I found a prettier looking cut and paste of those lines. This is Wes Gilbertson of Post Media, and you've already rolled through them. It's send Sharon Govich to the Backland line, Manjapani to the Lindholm line. And it looks like they're giving Rosie one last chance here, Rhett. He's lining up with Cadry and Dubay. That is a top nine role on the wing for Rizitschka.
Starting point is 01:16:52 The thought being maybe he's a top nine winger, not a fourth line center. people have sort of mixed bag on his camp. Some have liked it. Some have said, but it does feel like last call for Rosie here. Sink or swim, kid. If you're not going to play with energy and consistency, you don't deserve to be there.
Starting point is 01:17:14 Coleman Hunt Dewar, your fourth line. That's got some dirt under the nails. Don't mind that. We'll move to tonight's game. Jacob Markstrom announced as the starter. Steinberg bomb, Pat bomb. It's a Pat bomb. Wolf will back up.
Starting point is 01:17:30 Okay, good. You saw Fladar in their last game against Edmonton at home. And here's what we got left. Here's your schedule for the flames in the preseason. Dean. You asked when the hell does this all end? Well, actually pretty soon. Because you got tonight at home, 7 o'clock.
Starting point is 01:17:42 Then you're in Edmonton on Wednesday. And they close out with a televised game in Vancouver on Friday. They will then have the weekend to make their final cuts and prepare for the Wednesday opener where we'll be getting piled up at Greta Bar. I mean saying hi to our friends and fellow beautiful spectators. Beautiful.
Starting point is 01:18:02 Yeah. You know who's going to be raising eyebrows all season and is very, very good at hockey? Some punk that's never even played a game. These kids these days are at so arrogant. You know, someone should cave this guy's face in from making moves like this.
Starting point is 01:18:18 This poor guy has a family. Let's see what Connor Bedard just did. It's quite impressive. Oh, we don't have it. Shoot me in the face. Don't have it? You didn't put it in, eh? That's in there somewhere, don't worry. Frank would hate this.
Starting point is 01:18:37 I know. Oh, Frank would be just... That is my fault. What happened? I think you just have to cut down on the amount of things we have and get the good stuff in. What it is is, is we like the chat in the Pender Report file. Right. So there's just all this chatter.
Starting point is 01:18:53 Jack's tell me about the Steelers' offensive coordinator they're going to hire next week. I'm showing him pitches all this. So it is. So it is Jack's fault. Through all that crap to get to the actual, here's what we want on the show. God damn it, Jack. So it is Jack's fault then.
Starting point is 01:19:07 I don't know who's fault is. That sounds like you kind of. Yeah, throwing it on Jack's lap there. Definitely owning half of this. Jack? Yeah, I'll take some blame. Badaard was great. That's what you're talking.
Starting point is 01:19:19 We'll have it for two more. You did a thing, right? You all. Until you see it, you haven't. It's unbelievable. Yeah. Oh. Did a thing
Starting point is 01:19:28 NFL? Nick and the puck and a thing? Jaguars are in London. Did you hear about the Tori story animated thing? They're playing a game
Starting point is 01:19:35 in the kids' room? Just watch. It doesn't make sense until you see it. Bottom is the in motion. Animated replication of the game.
Starting point is 01:19:45 Darius Williams has it for the Jags. It's got flames coming out of his shoes, Rett. Flames come out of his cleats. Look at it. 61-yard pick six for the Jax.
Starting point is 01:19:55 Who's the, whose room is it, Ryan? The kid on Toy Story. What the hell of what Brat's name is? You tell me, your kids were of the age when this movie came out. It's Andy's Room. Andy's Room.
Starting point is 01:20:08 They had Slink the Dog. Slink the dog was doing the, he was the first down marker. If you want Moana songs, I'll hum them out for you. I don't tell much on Toy Story, Dean. Just missed that window. Oh, my apologies. Your kids are older than mine. You're right.
Starting point is 01:20:24 Yeah. Yeah. Sorry. Do you guys know that Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift are dating? Who? Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift? Saw a thing. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:38 Yeah, I did see a thing about it. And everyone has different tastes in like what they want dating. And so last night's Sunday nighter, Jets against KC, we really get to see what everyone's into. So there's on the left is Travis Kelsey, looking at Taylor Swift. And there's Zach Wilson.
Starting point is 01:20:55 and look at a Kelsey's mom. Well, you know, he's got a type. He has a type. I just want everyone to be happy. Donna Kelsey. Oh, Dawn. She's a breeder. He makes good athletes, Dino.
Starting point is 01:21:14 Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift. We have something else on Taylor, Swill. AI. A.I. Dean. What if Taylor Swift wrote a song about dating Travis Kelsey and it all went wrong? Because you never read these songs until you break up, right? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:25 What would it sound like? She's been stormed. Yeah. What would it sound like? Oh, here it is. You stole my heart. You intercepted it. Now you're gone.
Starting point is 01:21:38 Have to accept it. Did I meet your mom too soon? Or did I do what I always do? There it is. Yeah. Yeah, better than us at things. What a world. Making music, sounding like the artist, and making lyrics better than we and most likely even she could make.
Starting point is 01:22:42 We are so much better off. Thanks to AI, pumping out that sort of stuff for us. Where would we be without it? Yeah, it's all fun in games until the barn burner happens with no humans. Then I'm going to get pissed. Until now I'm laughing at that. Maybe it's good. Maybe you still get paid.
Starting point is 01:22:57 They just don't know you're there. Can't wait. Keep getting paid. Computer animate me and have me talk and just. I'll be in Tahiti. Make me sound smart. Blue Jays. Oh, you're going to love it, Rhett.
Starting point is 01:23:10 Boy, did they celebrate? After losing the pop-up game, there's Kevin Kiermeier, let her rip, buddy. Yeah. He came here to win. They didn't yesterday. They didn't the day before. Texas did two nights ago. Let's let her rip.
Starting point is 01:23:29 Why am I? I should be happier for this squad, right? Like, I'm a big J's honk. You know what it is? It's the Pinder effect. Yeah. Because he's so into it. We're at the track.
Starting point is 01:23:41 We're at the event on Saturday, watching the horses. as he's watching the Jay's game on his phone, it's Pinder, he ruins it for you. You know, for you. I don't want you to have nice things. Just me. Yeah. That's right.
Starting point is 01:23:52 Dean shudders at the thought of me being happy. Er. He's cheering for them. I can't have him the team he's cheering for being successful. I think you could say, Dean just shutters at the thought of me and end right there. Being happy, being sad.
Starting point is 01:24:08 I'm kind of indifferent to it. A lot of you makes me, Yeah. Let's look at the wild card matchups, friends, and Dean. As the Blue Jaisal head to Minnesota, they get 2.30 start times Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Thursday if necessary. Rangers and Ray's is your other AL Wildcard matchup, D-Backs, Brewers, Marlins, Phillies. 230, that's 430 Eastern time, retro. That's like going to work with hockey practice. Seems late.
Starting point is 01:24:40 Does it? Yeah. You like those morning games instead? It's not morning out here, you donkey? No, what have you kicked that forward three hours? He was saying if it was like 738 a.m. mountain time, that'd be a better. No, no, 12.38. I was expecting, I guess there's a 108, but that's still.
Starting point is 01:25:01 There's no West Coast teams here. If you look, everyone is in the central or eastern time zone. So we're not going to get night baseball like we have with, say, the Padres or Giants or Rockies or something like that. Too bad. Early start time. Do we like the matchup? Do we like the matchup? I don't know if you're a blues fan
Starting point is 01:25:18 you can like any matchups. They've been confounding and tough to figure out this year for all 89 wins. They've been rather tortuous and unlikable for many. Kirby Puckett's been just so good. If you can contain him and Kent Urbeck and Paul Molitor. Give yourself a chance.
Starting point is 01:25:38 He's an insider now. He's working for the Jays. That's a mole. That frigging Jack Morris, he can still throw. The Vegas odds, we'll get to you later in our betway bets of the day, but the twins are favored. They're the lowest totaled winning division winning team, but they're still good, and they can roll out two really good pitchers, which you're going to see in this series. Jayes will go with Gosman, game one, and likely Jose Barrios in game two on Wednesday, Thursday,
Starting point is 01:26:06 Thursday if necessary, Chris Bassett would be the man. We'll see. It's been a better month for hitting. It's been a miserable season prior to September for batting with earners in scoring position and the pitching's been very good all year. Three game series. Playoff baseball, right? Lightning in a bucket is what he said.
Starting point is 01:26:27 Just get it. Get hot for two weeks. It'll change your life. Let's go. Gabe Kapler, gone as Giants bench boss. Gabe, the babe. So how good is this? We always talk about Frank, our insider, being.
Starting point is 01:26:42 younger than Sidney Crosby. How about this? Gabe Kapler, 18 months younger than Wilford Brimley when they started filming the natural. Look at those two photos. Less than two years apart. Poor Wilford Brimley. Poor Wilford Brimley gets hauled into these comparisons all the time just because
Starting point is 01:27:02 he... Very mature. I think it's the gray stash. Poor Wilford. Just because you're pushing out a gray... Is he dead? Push broom. Doesn't mean... Gabe looks good, though. This guy here. Gabe does.
Starting point is 01:27:17 How about me? Almost as good as you. Frank coming on to you. Speaking of which, Ryan, Frank Baum. Trevor Zagris is re-signed with the Anaheim Ducks. Termin dollars, we got that, yeah? Three years, 5.75 per. Maybe the least Verbeek type player, but an immensely skilled player, nonetheless.
Starting point is 01:27:39 It's wondering how that was going to go. Bridge. another one of those young punks like that Badard highlight we saw just a few minutes ago. That's right. Pass in 2020, Dean. Wilford?
Starting point is 01:27:50 Mm-hmm. Oh, shit. He had a good go, though. 1934 to 2020. That's not bad. Yeah. 1934. Sorry.
Starting point is 01:28:00 Keep going, Ryan. It's a spender ripple. Got fooled again. Calvary FC was in action on the weekend, dancing in the rain if they could win. They've already wrapped up the regular season. This is all about getting into good form for the postseason. She was.
Starting point is 01:28:12 what and slippery out at Echofield. Don't believe me, watch this. One nothing valor early, but here come the boys in red. Two very young pros on either side of him. Trying to teach and execute all at once. Moosey, brilliant, sprints into the gap. This is Moosey. Back for Camargo.
Starting point is 01:28:31 It's an easy slip and slide for a surge today. What a finish? That is, as Camargo has scored in consecutive matches for Cavalry to level the score. I would make it one one. They would win two one, victorious again, 15 wins on the season.
Starting point is 01:28:52 They are feeling good. And if you see the visuals here, the rain's coming down there. Look at that. Another W for the fellas. It was moist. Were you there? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:29:05 You know what you need when it's that cold? Yep. I threw them a beer from the stands. Tommy. Yep. Another win. Cranc one right here in front of you,
Starting point is 01:29:13 fellas. I'm so happy. for Tommy because you know, right? I don't know if you knew this, but there were some people who were really hard on Tommy. He said he couldn't win. Who? I wouldn't dare stand for that. What if they won? Critical.
Starting point is 01:29:26 They just won the Canadian Premier League Shield. Right. The Shield? That's right. There's Macy there? When does Macy's come to town now? Yeah. This is coming in 2024. Great.
Starting point is 01:29:43 Yeah, wait. Need him. Show me some. Jack pulled this one out. He's a young fellow. Oh, yeah. He's a young fellow. He's a very NFL heavy. Go out, Jack.
Starting point is 01:29:52 We go to the Jack cam here as a CFL highlight. Now, Dean, you're a CFL historian, retro. You are I'm a shot. This is the first we've got to the CFL because I feel like it's getting. We miss some stuff we need to talk about. That four win season for the stamps. It's not been a great year locally. No, I really hasn't.
Starting point is 01:30:11 Jack, what did you find here? And boys, let's help the young man through this. What are we seeing? slide out and get caught and get some of it back is out of space a dribble kick at the line of scrimmage just across the original line
Starting point is 01:30:25 and did they reset the downs with out and get caught so he hits the back in he kicks it forward two yards and falls on it and it's right just past the original line of scrimmage
Starting point is 01:30:36 on second and long there Dean. Help us out please. The hell's going on here? This is cheeky. It's an on side punt. Is that what, that is correct.
Starting point is 01:30:50 Is that what that is? Fresh set of down. Jack just sends me this stuff all the time. He's like, the hell's going on in this league? The hell is this? That is quite a play. Well, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:31:01 Have you seen, though? The NFL, they're given some props because you see with what they're doing in Miami. They got Tyree Kiel going. Free snap motion. You know, he's flying down before the snap and then hitting the line with speed.
Starting point is 01:31:17 the same as what you can do in the in the CFL where that everybody's coming and hitting the line of the snap, but even just being able to move alongside, they're saying this is this, they shouldn't be allowed to do this. This is CF was we in the CFL all of a sudden? Yeah, next thing you know, you know, you know, you know, it are getting points from missing field goals and you can punt it two yards to yourself and get a fresh nighters have done it. The Dolphins have done it. You know what it is? And we say it all the time. CFL, cutting edge. That's CFL. That's what we actually say. Final throwaways for the day.
Starting point is 01:31:46 We start with, you want to get ejected from beer league, Brett? You want to get ejected real quick? Like, hockey's not for you. You want a quick ticket. Okay, well, if I'm going to play, that is exactly what I want to get.
Starting point is 01:31:58 Tost early, right? You're on the game sheet. You don't want to play. Let's get out of here. Here's what you do if you want to get out of your hockey game real quick. And from Adult League 101. Oh, shit. Some knights of the round table shit right there.
Starting point is 01:32:24 Full swing. house. Not the best. Went for the head too, right? Two swings and then a cross check to the jiblets there. Another swing late that it's tough to see. You know what, though? I bet you that guy's a great guy.
Starting point is 01:32:39 Early shower. You can see that the guy that got whacked is a great guy just because of the massive surge of support. That's right. Yeah, guys really came to his aid. Yeah. Fear leaks. God. Rat heard you had a great weekend.
Starting point is 01:32:53 Sorry, Ryan. Hence the reason. I'm not playing it. Right? Big bullshit. Yeah. One loser ruins the whole thing for everyone else. Forever.
Starting point is 01:33:02 That's right. That's it. I'm done playing. Rhett, congrats on the new deck you built. I know Ray was mad at you because it impedes his view a little of the shoveler, but you need a deck. You build a deck, right? I know the deck is going down.
Starting point is 01:33:15 Yeah. Now, this is, I think you're collecting some paving stones up here. Got the materials there. Yeah. So here comes right up with stairs. Oh, no, Ratts roll. Support beams. Yeah, you got to.
Starting point is 01:33:33 He's trying to save money again. Yeah. You know what? A screw pile. I didn't have it centered on the screw pile. The piles, yeah. That weight wiggled it just enough. Now, did you use nails or screws, right?
Starting point is 01:33:46 Because you got to use screws. I know. Well, I took a few short. Oh, I used the nail gun. You silly goose. You got to use screws. Now the good news is Rob Ray was there to help right after that deck imploded. And, you know, just said, hey, come on over.
Starting point is 01:34:03 Let's forget about it. We'll fix that tomorrow. Let's just play some ping pong. Let's just let it go and have a couple beers. Yeah, there we go. Pickle ball. Rack it right to the face. It is pickleball for sure.
Starting point is 01:34:27 He needs to stand up ping pong. That's all this. He needs to have his hand through the. through that string. Yes. That's why you have the string. Yeah, the... Oh.
Starting point is 01:34:39 Good freeze, Jack. You know what, though? Good follow through. He needs to bend his knees, though. AI. That's a AI. Is it AI? Yeah, that's got to be that.
Starting point is 01:34:48 I do like... Last couple for you. I do like the noise that dude makes. Oh. Oh. Thwhack. We've been selling Barnburner T-shirts and hoodies on Nationgear. For a long time.
Starting point is 01:35:02 saying send us photos. We had some guys down in the tropics, taking photos, and completely out of the blue this weekend, this arrived in my DMs, baby. Oh, Japan. Look this. You zoom in there? What are we guys?
Starting point is 01:35:17 Barnburner T-shirt. Buddy in Japan. Land of the Rising Sunday. Is that depictates? I don't think that's depict, it's no. Well, that's awfully. Thank you for sporting a show. It's a big old lantern there.
Starting point is 01:35:31 What does that say, right? You're fluent in Japanese. you can't say it on there okay sorry I wonder you took a photo there well thanks for supporting the show there bud love to see it
Starting point is 01:35:41 love to see it wear your gear take a photo we'll put you on the show finally we're at the track uh dean's surprise show up at work today after all your winnings at the track two days ago
Starting point is 01:35:52 and I was debating it must have been on a bender yesterday it was quite a day let's have a peek some dummies went to the track oh buddies we've been looking forward to We're out here.
Starting point is 01:36:15 Century Downs, racetrack and casino, there's nothing like a day at the race. Ryan really knows a lot about racing. He's gonna win a lot of money today. The Lollipop Kid, 47% of his races in the money. Every Saturday and Sunday. It's all ages. Bring your kids. There's inside, there's outside, have a bite to eight, have some drinks.
Starting point is 01:36:35 What's a furlong? Let's go, shall we? We're six, four seven, across the board. Win, place, show. Three even bets. Two horses. Let's do it. I'm kidding. Do it.
Starting point is 01:37:32 Big day at the track, Sentry Downs, race track and casino. The Thuribreds, man, I'm telling you, it's the best. How fun is that when you got your guy coming down the home stretch? Come on, you bastard number six, let's go! Yeah, you did a lot of yelling. It was a lot of yelling, which is not surprising. You've got to motivate them. I know.
Starting point is 01:37:50 Spurring them on. They hurt us. That's right. Every Saturday and Sunday through the month of October, Thuribreds, 1245 post time here at the tracks, Sentry Downs. Awesome. You want to be inside? You can be inside. You want to be out here. Be out here. Drinks, food, fun. You can't beat it. Oh. There's good times, man. I was trying to remember the, what was it, Blairback Jack.
Starting point is 01:38:31 Bearback Jack came through for me. Boy. The others, I could have had better days, but the old Bearback Jack. That was your one. Big one. Problem was he was about like, you had to lay a hundred to win about 50. He was a heavy favorite. Yeah, he was a heavy favorite. Heavy favorite. As it turned out, a heavy favorite. A heavy favorite. That's a pin of report brought you by Village Honda, your dealership for life. Head up to the Northwest Automall. Stop in, say hi, have that coffee.
Starting point is 01:38:58 Delicious coffee. And while you're there, maybe talk to them. If you've got a vehicle, pre-owned, they're looking to buy your pre-owned vehicle. No obligation. Cash within 24 hours. They're going to put it on the lot. They want to have the best selection of used in this city. Dealership for Life, Village Honda. Yeah, Anthony was there. I noticed Anthony didn't make it into the highlight pack. He was lined up at the till. Just shilling out 20s.
Starting point is 01:39:22 Yeah. Yeah, very nice. But yeah, that century downs, every as I said there, every, and what, unfortunately, it was kind of a rainy day. We didn't want to be outside with the gear. But then yesterday was beautiful. Friday was beautiful. Yesterday was beautiful.
Starting point is 01:39:40 It's lots of October left. I don't know if you've noticed. I'll tell you this. All of October, 1245 Saturday and Sunday. And you brought your kids. They had a blast. It's free to get in, all ages. Check it out.
Starting point is 01:39:53 Century Downs race track and casino. And look, if the weather is like it wasn't Saturday, like how set up are we inside? That was great. A little restaurant, you have a few beers, nice and warm. Yeah. Kathy was the gal who was working the ticket machine there. And she was kind of, okay, here's what we're going to do.
Starting point is 01:40:09 We're going to do this together. Okay, yeah, yeah. And then I came. up with the one with one i want uh race uh race six horse two two dollars to win so she kind of does one of these and looks at the board behind to see what the what the odds are okay yeah that's two dollars then good luck yeah kathy new yeah not close not close uh let's you know what i want to do here uh before we get into betway and all that mccloud law mcclod law this day in flames history I kind of teased you with it earlier.
Starting point is 01:40:47 But I'm going to, so I'm going to come, come through on my tease. McLeod Law, our good friends, our buddies in the legal system. Are you getting to a point where you need somebody to have your back? You need some support. Then it's McLeod Law. Whatever the case is, whatever the legal issue is that you're facing, contact McLeod Law. They will find that specific arm of the business. And they have the best of the best ready to go to work for you.
Starting point is 01:41:13 Peter Klein, he's the personal injury guy, also goes to work for you with that disability insurance claim. If you can't get that claim to come through, if they're kind of, oh, well, yeah, we're checking on it. We'll try and get through to you. Peter Klein, no messing around. He'll get you the peace of mind. He'll get you those benefits that you paid for and that you deserve.
Starting point is 01:41:31 That and more over at McLeodlaw, MacLeod-law.com. I was telling you, it was this date back in 1999, the Calgary Flames named a captain. Now, he had played the previous season. They were going into the new season. And he was, he was the guy, as it turns out. I knew that this guy played. And I guess if I was pressed,
Starting point is 01:41:57 I didn't, maybe I didn't know that he was captain. Now, if I'll give you a hint, he was the captain. Who's coming in? Sheesh. What the hell's going on over there? Trying to do a show here. Robert there?
Starting point is 01:42:09 Don't they know what you're doing? Shoveler? Is that the other room they usually? She's just still all giddy over that big bills. Oh, yeah. Oh, dear. Yeah. I don't care.
Starting point is 01:42:21 Get whichever one you want. Yeah. Or don't get them. I don't know. Whatever. He was the captain prior to Dave Lowry being named captain. Do you know it? Odd Simpson?
Starting point is 01:42:35 Close. You're right in that. Chris Clark? You're right in that pocket. Oh, fuck, he wasn't Washington. What did you say prior to who? Dave Lowry. Prior to Lowry.
Starting point is 01:42:46 Yeah. This guy actually had to retire due to injury, did not play for very long as a flame, had a long career, has a notable tie to the Calgary Flames, not as a flame. It's a little obscure. Let's take a look.
Starting point is 01:43:02 Let's take a look, Jack. Let him know. I know who it is. Look at that. Hell it. Steve Smith named captain October 2nd of 1990. from Glasgow, Scotland.
Starting point is 01:43:16 He came back after a serious neck injury. There was some debate as to whether he was going to be able to play or not. Came back in, did not play the entire 97-98 season. 98-99 got into 69 games the following year. El Capitan. He, however, did struggle with injuries. It was not something that he was going to be able to play with. played just 20 games in 99, 2000, the following year, just 13 games before retiring.
Starting point is 01:43:46 And then Dave Lowry took over the cap and said, there you go. Steve Smith, who of course, yes, has a notable tie. He was an oiler and. John McPherson in the comments yelling shoot, which was things you'd hear at the Saddle home for many years after the infamous Steve Smith goal. Yeah, that sounds about right. avid gardener called Chicago home,
Starting point is 01:44:10 Coach of Carolina staff not long ago and great too. Shoot. Now imagine the Steve Smith own goal in 2023, 24 with social media and news networks and the hatred, the vitriol
Starting point is 01:44:31 that just exists in our society today. Like you saw what Zach Wilson was putting up with in New York. That's just for not being very good, let alone scoring on your own net when you're a Stanley Cup favorite to essentially end your playoff run against your heated rival.
Starting point is 01:44:52 Poor Steve. I'm sure there was dark days. Dark days. It's like the Buckner. But I think I could say, Ryan, I think he's doing all right. I didn't know he was a gardener. What's he, uh, what's he into? Well, I think he had a place. He just said it was such a nice escape. He loved it as a hobby. I remember I'm seeing an event that he was one of numerous coaches spoke at. We happened to have similar flight times. We sat down for beer and waited for our respective flights to leave at the end of the conference. And he was like, yeah, I find great peace and
Starting point is 01:45:16 you know, just getting out in the yard, working on stuff and getting away from all the pressures of hockey. And I guess he sort of lived in the suburbs of Chicago with this huge, huge yard and avid Gardner. I'm guessing spending time talking to you must have been very peaceful for him. He did have a lot of beers and seem to be off.
Starting point is 01:45:34 Yeah, didn't say a whole lot. But he did come on our old show soon after, at least on my portion of the show to tell some stories and talk about life. So it couldn't be about that. McLeod Law, proud of those Calgary routes. It's a big part of their longstanding client relationships. They get the city.
Starting point is 01:45:50 They get the people in it and the way things work, like the communities that they serve, McLeod Law, varied, diverse. They value their client base. Sharing a commitment to making a positive impact on this city. It's MacLeodlaw, maclough, maclough, maclough, dot com on social media. McLeodlaw, LLP. I'm trying to remember how that happened.
Starting point is 01:46:09 You either started it. as an assistant here as he was trying to get healthy to make a comeback or as soon as he couldn't get through the injuries he then became it was something weird like that yeah I think what it was he he was named captain and then couldn't play and I think served as a an assistant while on the payroll kind of like right when you were too hurt to play you were behind the bench i thought he goes on payroll at earl's tin palace that's weird so he was the team of well i was keeping the place afloat that's all right that's fair kind of you he's on the hr side just doing hiring. That's right. So a reminder next
Starting point is 01:46:42 week, we're going to be at Greta, October the 11th season opener. Tickets will be going on sale. Watch your social media. We will be, and we'll tell you about it here on the show, obviously. But yeah, we're going to be at Greta, giving stuff away, chance for you to win tickets to the thing. And because there's an outdoor game in Alberta being played. We might have an experience or two for you. Tickets are 20 bucks. Again, as soon as they go on sale, we'll let you know, raising money for kids, sport as well. They got food,
Starting point is 01:47:09 specials, drink specials, and yes, we'll be watching the game. It'll be a, it'll be, it'll be a, it'll be a, it'll be a hoot. It'll be a barn burner. Yeah, it'll be an absolute hoot. You can go online for details, gretta bar.com slash events. We'll have our betway point spread picks tomorrow. Now everybody else, Jack, Rhett, myself, our picks are in. Ryan has a, uh, a, uh, one of his three bets tonight.
Starting point is 01:47:33 Yeah. Going on the Monday nighter. I'm rolling with Benny Dimes as cousin Danny Dimes and the Giants. When I made the pick, they were, Plus one, I believe. I think the line's moved to plus one and a half on Betway. Either way, Seattle's kind of been mixed bag at best this year. And the Giants have as well.
Starting point is 01:47:48 I don't really know what to expect, but somehow I'm on the Giants tonight. All right. Well, let's see how we do. Betway, get the Betway app on your phone. It's Betway, the official gaming partner of Barn Burner, bet the responsible way with Betway. I am in with a couple four this evening. Oh, I also like Danny Dimes and the Giants.
Starting point is 01:48:08 remember they got blown up in week one against Dallas. Yeah. I mean, that game was over. Weather was no good. I think it could be a bounce back here. Giants plus one and a half at home. It's basically a pick them. I'm going to take the Giants minus 110.
Starting point is 01:48:24 Darren Waller, big acquisition of the offseason, the big tight end. Now, the over under four receptions is four and a half. He had three in Dallas, against Dallas in that opening week game. had three against San Francisco, maybe the best defense in the league, had six against Arizona. There you go. I'm going to take the over. Receptions, Darren Waller.
Starting point is 01:48:49 It's four and a half. I'm taking the over plus 115. They need to get him going. He might be their best receiver, let alone tight end. So I'm taking the over. I like that bet. I also have a prop from tonight's giant Seattle game.
Starting point is 01:49:02 We'll start there at the bottom. I'm going to take Danny Dimes over 35 and a half rushing yards. two of the three weeks this season, he has easily eclipsed that mark. The only one he didn't was that, yeah, awful opener where they got blanked 41-0. No, it was the Niners game last week. So let's see, Danny Dimes go three for four over that mark
Starting point is 01:49:23 to pay minus 110. And the Jays are dogs. I'll take plus money on this crew because I'm already invested wearing the jerseys and being an idiot somewhere yelling at the TV. Let's go. Plus 105 for the Jays to beat the twins in the wildcard best of three.
Starting point is 01:49:36 there you go check out those and like you say those odds are moving they're moving all the time get in on it the mondayder little baseball futures you'll be able to find some future stuff both NFL wise NHL wise still NFL future stuff on there so also lots of futures now that the field is finalized for the baseball postseason as well correct a lot of braves go braves get a get another ring for our boy yeah let's go Metro? What? What's happening? Sweat. Hot here. Is it? Oh, come home. Not an issue here.
Starting point is 01:50:15 80. Yeah, it's good. Really? Hot. It feels like August. Hugh. Goodness. We're full frost mode here. Good morning. Yeah, it's brisk. It's brisk. Flames tonight, 7 o'clock local time. You can stream it.
Starting point is 01:50:33 Watch it on flames.com. It's must win, Dean. Big one. I think two points on the line tonight. Huge. And as you said earlier, it's do or die for Adam Rizekka. Yeah, Pinder. That's what she said. Poor Rosie.
Starting point is 01:50:48 Oh, no, poor, tell your best game, get a job. Real easy. Go play well. Subscribe to the YouTube. We love you. Eric. Go and follow on the Soche. We'll have the details on the Greta party next week. Everything's sucking there on the chat group. We'll talk to you tomorrow, buddies.
Starting point is 01:51:08 Say it.
