Flames fans, your captain is going nowhere.
Michael Backland extending today a two-year extension,
one year left on his deal at $4.5 million.
Number 11, a very, very good chance of being a career one jersey player
with the Calgary Flames after being drafted in the first round,
about a thousand years ago.
Backland's still a center that carries one of the heavier loads around the NHL
in terms of playing against other teams' top talent,
and the flames lock them in for a two-year extension worth $3.25 million.
Don't expect Michael Backland necessarily to be a number two center when it expires,
but at $3.25 million, by the time he changed 39, three springs from now,
that's cheap money if you're a number three or even a number four center.
The guy's very loyal to the city of Calgary, active in the philanthropic community,
and a guy that clearly at this juncture has no desire to lead Calgary and why would he?
It's been good.
Can't argue that the leadership's been much tidier since he took over.
So congrats to Michael Backland and the Calgary Flames.
The captain's locked up for the next three seasons.
