Starting point is 00:00:00 And now the reason people tuned in today. Yeah, that's, you're welcome. There it is to be jazzed there. Major Flames news. I don't want to say anything because I'll get, I'll get it wrong. Well, we said it yesterday. Jack has the clip. We added on the show. You'd ask, does Connie have any business to do still?
Starting point is 00:00:36 Is that it? You got Zeri signed. Red nailed it. I talked to him yesterday. I was with one for two, 500. That gets in the Hall of Fame for baseball. Does, yeah. Um, didn't you say slow play it or who said get it done or.
Starting point is 00:00:53 Oh, he got the clip. Yeah. There again. Jack's conflicting reports. Here we go. So is there anything else that Craig has to do? Cause they've got the, they got rookies. Rookies are getting on the ice here.
Starting point is 00:01:03 They're going to get that done. He's got some seats to put in. No, no. Leave that to the ice plant. He's in the office. Got to run the plumbing. There is one piece of work. I would love to see done before camp.
Starting point is 00:01:16 A-oh. A hundred percent a-oh. Can you give us an A-U? Because it's Dusty. Wherewolves of London? Eligible to be extended. Great time. As yesterday.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Ritz at A-U. And then you just push the button. Very satisfying of that clip. But yes. See how we aren't always wrong about everything? Just most of the time. Well, it's, yeah. I think that was kind of, yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:43 I think he was looking for a different part of the book. Yeah, I was waiting for more of a take on. your take and my take Like not really Not really Backslaps to say Dustin Wolf still needs a extension No but that we
Starting point is 00:01:55 You know within 12 hours Kind of like well Marta Luke could clean some shit up outside But if they did it the next day Then it would be what happens Yeah I'm kind of with Dean If we say that That clip made no sense
Starting point is 00:02:05 To what we're not us Look at this Look how fucking smart we are Yeah We're uh We're just back It's our fourth year We had the summer off
Starting point is 00:02:14 And we're just getting started We're just We're just I thought this would be a, you know, I would expect a longer term deal. Yeah. Oh, slow player. Siri came in at three years. I'd expect somewhere in the seven or eight years.
Starting point is 00:02:27 We had said the Swamen Allmark was going to be the top end. Dostel was the bottom. There was a very natural window where he would get signed in. Well, those are all names that came up. That would be, yeah, those are the comps. Yeah. The three last goalies that are somewhat similar. Dostal are a rookie.
Starting point is 00:02:42 The other two guys can't go above them. They got more experience and more credentials. that's what we thought would happen. I didn't. Well, you were just debating for debating. I think you thought this would happen. I was said to slow play. He wants to be here,
Starting point is 00:02:57 and he probably could have made more money if he waited, or maybe, you know, goalies are goalies still. Even great goalies have bad seasons. But he had a sensational rookie year last year. Sensational. I don't know what you're getting at. You've lost me today.
Starting point is 00:03:12 You're okay. Dustin Wolf signs a contract extension with the Calgary Flames. seven years at an average annual annual value of seven and a half million. Do the math on that. Yeah. So on one hand, you're coming out of entry level straight into a seven and a half mill.
Starting point is 00:03:32 I love today's NHL. It's great second deal. But yeah, because he would have worked a bunch of the A. But at the same time, this again feels like some tidy work by the Calgary. I feel like it's a, yeah. If you have a fair amount of confidence that he's going to be
Starting point is 00:03:49 average, anything that he looked like last year, never mind ascending from there, his rookie year, his first full year in the league, this is a slam dunk? Because last year this time, we had no idea what you were going to get. Is he too small, which has been the narrative his whole career? But that still had a lot of steam amongst NHL people, which is crazy after watching the season he put together. And he was seventh in the league and goals saved above expected in a really not easy environment.
Starting point is 00:04:15 got a chance a lot. They didn't score a lot. He was way over 500 on this team. Like 2619. Like it's that was a exceptional season. And if you have a top 10 goalie, this is a steel. And if he becomes a top five goalie, this is going to be incredibly fortuitous when the cap in four years will be $125 million. That's like paying a guy five and a half a year in today's money. I would think, and I'll just throw it out there with the conversations that we've had, even if you take out a massive. annual increase to the cap and everything else. If we, if we, if we just had seven and a half, I think we all would have,
Starting point is 00:04:52 I'm not sure you get that for, I'm not sure you're getting them at seven. I didn't have, seven and a half, I was like, we were kind of talking nine's, I didn't dig into it. I don't nerd out at the Cowboys tent
Starting point is 00:05:03 in the summer to talk about, right, contracts, but when I, I don't think there was a place where he was going to get more than Omark or swim because those guys both had received Vesna votes prior. They're more established.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Just by virtue of the cap. No, sure. With the cap going up, it's like NFL quarterback money. Yeah, you don't feel the best. Well, you're going to be the highest paid. Just by virtue of that. What it kind of signals to me is, like you said, this is a guy that wants to be here.
Starting point is 00:05:31 This is not two sides really kind of jockeying and posturing over every little, little thing. The guy wants to play, wants to be a number one, seven and a half million dollars a year, times seven is a lot of money. You're set up for life. happy to be here. Got it for eight years.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Like you said, he spent the summer here. He was golfing with Bernie the other day. Oh, that's good company. So it's, it's all good. I think if you wanted the eighth year, because I think they're buying four UFA years here. And that's kind of,
Starting point is 00:06:02 you know, the secret sauce is like, okay, like when teams have control, they exert it. See Conner's area. When you want to buy UFA years, that's going to drive up the AV.
Starting point is 00:06:11 If you wanted eight years, I imagine the number was going to be North eight. And so, The sweet spot for the agent and the player and the team was almost max term eight years, seven, and you keep the number a hair lower. I just, I see very low risk here because I'm a Dustin Wolf believer. He's been called too small since like Bantam years. And he's a two-time CHL goal of the year would have set the WHL record for wins and shutouts,
Starting point is 00:06:38 if not for two COVID-plagued seasons. His first year in the HL, he wins goalie of the year. That's pretty unprecedented rare air. his second year in the HL, he's the player of the year, and goalie of the year, and his first year in the NHL, it took a Lane Hudson,
Starting point is 00:06:50 historic defensive season for him not to win the call date. This was an exceptional season for Dustin Wolfe, and it's not out of the ordinary for his career. He does this at every level. Now he's doing it in the NHL.
Starting point is 00:07:02 Not surprised. Some are. What are your thoughts just from the players' perspective? Like, the things that you would take into account, if this contract comes across the table, do I like the city do I have a chance to win am I going to be the number one how worried are
Starting point is 00:07:20 do you think he would be that well in four years I'm not I'm going to be making everyone's different less isn't it yeah totally there would be guys that would think that he's obviously not and it's like you said such a yeah you're laughing it's so it's so much money yeah he's going from making 900 grand a year as a pro athlete to like securing what 50 plus million the fourth biggest contract in franchise six history you're turning down a lot of money for even just like maybe you were going to be a riggoly but your knee gets blown out like this is life altering generational change your life and your kids life's money it's winning a lottery yeah it is choosing to win a lot and he loves it here he said that everything enough about the love no but that's
Starting point is 00:08:02 the choice that's the choice Jacob true but didn't want to be in winnipeg he took short short short he got three years ago I don't like it here so yeah I just but he likes it now which is why he's He likes it great. Let's not a lot of guys that have done the long term as of late. That's why I think this is a good win for the flames. And for him, yeah, he's going to have to play very poorly for it not to come through. That's what I'm trying to consider. What are the different scenarios where, okay, if he plays the way he played this year,
Starting point is 00:08:37 seven and a half is good. It's great. If he improves, he's extremely. valued it. I don't know, isn't he? Maybe. Oh, yeah. If he, if he becomes a top five goal in the next three years, which might be a little too rare, but this is the top. But a top 10, golden. He was that last year. I know. So, so if he's, if he remains a top 10, it's a steel, that's a fair.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Every team would love to have a top 10 goalie. Yeah, with the cap going up the way it is. Yeah. The only scenario where it's not good is if he falls on his face. And even at that, you really have to fall on your face. Right. Like, are we talking about a Jack Campbell where you have with. Yeah. That's what you're doing. And Jack Campbell didn't have this track record.
Starting point is 00:09:15 He was an A.H.L. goalie, a 1B. We're not trying to say he did have the track. No, I just think he was the first round pick, though. Right. But it took forever to get anywhere. It wasn't until the second organization they did anything. And then in Toronto, he finally becomes a one. I know.
Starting point is 00:09:28 Regardless, you don't have to go into the stats of Jack. I'm just saying that. Yeah. Jack Campbell was a high risk proposition. It feels very low risk. I agree. If that's what you're saying. Well, it's seven and a half million for seven years on a rookie goalie.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Who was. And you can. You can, again, you are sold on it. Some may be to the same, they can look at it and say, well, there's been lots of, I get it. I'm with you. I think it's a great deal. I'm happy for the, for the player and for the team. And for, for Wolf, isn't it a great spot to be in where you can play?
Starting point is 00:10:00 I always said that about Iggy. And this goes back. Imagine you're making seven million a year, whatever he was making. And it's like, hey, thanks for giving us such a deal. Thanks for, thanks for. What a teammate. Thanks for being such a great guy. You're making 10 million Canadian a year.
Starting point is 00:10:16 You're welcome. Yeah. No problem, guys. I'm happy to do it for all you guys. Seven and a half. No one's ever going to be overpaid. It's going to be really hard for this not to be a slam down com run for whatever, you know. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:30 You're not going to be looking at other. How do we fit this guy in? Wow. You're paying Wolf seven and it's. No. Like I just remember it was last fall and Seattle extended Joey DeCourt five times five. five times five. Older, not as good.
Starting point is 00:10:46 And that five number kept popping up with these sort of middle tier goalies. And would you pay an extra two and a half million a year in this massively growing cap environment to get a goalie better than that middle tier that includes the Joey DeCords? Hell yeah, you would. Especially with the resume that becomes,
Starting point is 00:11:00 is it possible? We're missing the boat on Joey DeCourt. I think he's actually that day, but we came in. I came in and either you or Jack said, yeah, Joey Decor had five million. I was like, well, how many years.
Starting point is 00:11:13 So one point what really? No, no, five per times. Five times five. Holy shit, what? And then he's on the Olympic invite. It's like maybe. Anyway, just a side thought. Good age.
Starting point is 00:11:23 But again, if you, if you want to pick one, I think around the horn, we'd all take Wolf over Decord. He's younger. He had a better season last year, and there seems to be a lot more ceiling there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:31 And we'd know nothing about Joey decor. Well, so I'm going. Late games. I know he somehow found a way to wrestle that job from Philip Grubhouse. He was in Ottawa. Yeah, that might sound.
Starting point is 00:11:40 And you know, we pay attention to Senators hockey in the past. Anyway, so I would say it's been a good few days for Craig Conroy. I agree. And I like where he took risk. Well, it was his birthday. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Big party on Friday. Big party, big bash. Got the Zeri deal done. And then gets his franchise goal. He is a hard-nosed bugger, isn't he? He just says, this is what you're going to get if you don't want it. Pound sand. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:13 Yeah, like Philip Grubauer is making six. Jordan Bennington's making six. Markstrom's making six. John Gibson six. Like, it's just, they're all mid-30s, and it feels like this guy's got a decade of great hockey, and the cap's exploding. This is, you've got eight years of one of the hardest positions
Starting point is 00:12:30 to get in the sport. One C and gold. Super fan. Take it easy. I'd like the deal. You are fizzy. I don't know. I feel like it's just, it's such a good story.
Starting point is 00:12:41 when everyone says he's not big enough. He almost doesn't even get drafted. How do you not love the story? It's emotional to do. Oh, I know. It's emotional. Loves the series. He only,
Starting point is 00:12:50 love us. He goes through the diatribe every time. Like, this guy was born premature. His family couldn't rub two nickels together. He was sewing holes in socks. Both ways to school. Callis is on his feet.
Starting point is 00:13:06 He was blind and death. It's impressive what he's done, despite all those. It is. Yeah. Some real. diversity he's faced. It's five foot stature. Is he five feet? Because it makes it sounds like he's... Yeah, he's four
Starting point is 00:13:18 foot too. He's got red hair, we think. That's not easy. We're a good. Well, they better win now. I said that the Connie, we did a big hot panel take yesterday. Yeah. He's got a Stanley Cup and he's got to Stanley Cup and he's got to Stanley Cup. Why don't you get... Yeah. You get yourself Stanley Cup. You should get one. Go get it. Apparently they're good to have.
Starting point is 00:13:44 Yeah. Put them on the shelf. behind you. Do you think he wants one or is the indifference? He didn't seem overly eager. Really? No. He talked about a plan and red flag. This was part of the plan.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Oh, there you go. Well, we've cleared all the air. We've covered the hot topics. See you, buddies. I got a big, big batch of borsht. Simmering on the stove. How'd you leave your borsed? I don't know if I should have.
Starting point is 00:14:18 I wouldn't have done that. I don't think. Well, I started at it late and. Yeah. There's someone at home, though. Nope. Good time to visit the Warners, I guess. It's like Joe Burrow when he's on the road.
Starting point is 00:14:34 The deal is all chopped up and ready to go. Apparently all the cheerleaders can go when he's on the road. Yeah. Yeah, they're house sitters. I'd like a house sitter. That sounds fine. You know, it's been nice too. As we've been bad, we've been doing this talk.
Starting point is 00:14:48 Hey, Connie, this and Wolf and all that. We haven't talked about that defensemen at all. Oh, got another guy that wants so. Weger? We got it in the phone. Weir's great. In Canada. We love mugshots and McKenzie Weger.
Starting point is 00:15:01 I would take both of them at the same time. I would take weeks to mugshots if he wants to feel for it. Be just bridging. Hey, just peace. Just a peace treat. Do I bring everybody together? We love the city. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:16 We're short. Yeah. What are you talking to on your phone now? I'm just looking to. George Shus Dirkens contract. I'm in there, but, you know. And what does it tell you? 29.
Starting point is 00:15:28 He signed up for eight years at 11 and a half. He's going to play to at least 37, making 11 and a half. Yeah. And that deal expires, Dustin Wolf. Can make a lot as my own. So that's this coming year.
Starting point is 00:15:42 The average, the AAVs. Now, Kerry Price crushing it. May well. You hear about the big trade? Hey, as the sharks could use an upgrade. Yeah. Wouldn't add for the sharks.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Once a shark, always a shark. Bob are making his 10, signed as a free agent. You know what the year of year? This is the last year of his deal. Oh, it's interesting. Yeah. Will he do the everything, everyone else takes a deal in Florida? I take a deal?
Starting point is 00:16:05 Or do you care because he's in his 30s now? Knowing that guy, just give me whatever. Give me some of that Borch that Warner's making. It's good. I've been made, I got 70 million. I would go with the lobster bisque if I was in Florida, but Borch is good as well. How about John Gibbonne? Gibson still nailing it down there.
Starting point is 00:16:26 That's good money for a backup. I'll tell you that. Has he played like a full season? He was healthy just in time of the trade line and then got hurt when his name was in conversation. Year's seven of eight. I feel like this contract's been ongoing for two decades. Like I feel like John Gibson was playing when I played. Old Gibby?
Starting point is 00:16:42 He was there when they won five divisional titles in a row, not for all of them. But yeah, it was him and Freddie Anderson at one point. I don't forget that. Yeah. They had to move Freddie. Too many goalies. And who was the wrong catching goalie that came here for a little bit? Hillier.
Starting point is 00:16:55 Yeah, Jonas Hiller. Swiss? Yeah. You don't have that? The song. It's been a while since. I don't think so. That's too bad.
Starting point is 00:17:05 I liked that one.
