Starting point is 00:00:00 Tough to play when you've flown in day of a game. Oh, gosh, got to be so hard. Especially when you're up against half an HL team and an empty barn. Because they practiced here and then flew in or they left the game day exhibition kind of deal. Yeah. If it's the hardest thing you're asked to do when you're trying to make an NHL club, you should probably be able to overcome. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Like if you're a veteran, if you're Nazim Kaudi, that's annoying. He's not making that flight. It's all guys that are trying to carve out a roll. on this team minus the minimum, which is like five vets. You know what? I'd like you to open up on this a little bit more. I like this side of you right now. Let the bastards have it.
Starting point is 00:00:49 NHL job sitting there for you. Yeah. So it's like, oh, no, we had to fly on a charter the day of. It's like, yeah, well, do you want to make the NHL or not? Because you can get back on the commercial flights. You can also bust the regulars if you'd like. Now, in fairness, I don't know if they're bad. It's just more like.
Starting point is 00:01:03 But I don't know if they're trotting out the excuse of game day travel. I think it was rent. Correct. But it's. So I mean, it is not. All right. I'll use that as my excuse to make it that was unwatchable. Yeah, I think that was,
Starting point is 00:01:15 Rhett was saying, wow, it's that game day travel. That's why Rhett didn't go to the game. I wanted to watch, but I knew that they'd travel. So I knew they'd be a little off and I couldn't. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:01:24 like I'm just trying to find a battle here. Like, I guess, like if Cairns and Morton are going to be strong, could they usurp like Justin Kirkland? What about Hansik? Is Hans, should Hansick not be trying to make it?
Starting point is 00:01:38 If you're the flames, I'd rather you play. at the top half of your lineup every night at the HL until he earns a call-up. Like, do you want him to be your 13th forward? I don't. No, I wanted to play well enough where they have to insert him in the lineup. So who's he? I don't, I would love to see it as well.
Starting point is 00:01:55 I don't see him displacing any of the guys that they've got. See, I don't like this. We've done this too often in training camps where, well, even if they have one, which they rarely do, some kid comes along and oddly enough has a good, well, I would love. to keep you no spots let's play the game are you going to put joel fairby in the press box for him no are you going to put shergovich in the press box this is not a fun game no are you going to put lomburg in the press box for him probably not are you going to put bospicil in the press box for him doubt it are you going to put clapka in the press box for him not if clapka looks
Starting point is 00:02:29 anything like you did down the stretch that's your bottom six wingers minus frost the center and he's clearly not at frost level at this point yet so i just like hontz can be great but unless he's undeniable, the best thing for him is trying at center and the A and go put up some points in the American Lake, right? I thought you liked this. You just said you liked them kind of taking runs. Well, I like him. Let that pony run. I like that side, Amanda Marshall, but I don't like,
Starting point is 00:02:55 I don't like when all the spots are taking. They have too many wingers who said it for two years. Why don't they trade something? They re-sign Boston. So you can trade it in. A number one center back. Like if you like Karens, you like more. and you like Kirkland, you expect a Hansick, Gridden,
Starting point is 00:03:12 or like any of those guys to pop mid-season, where are you putting them? Let me submit this just to keep the conversation. You know our buddy, Darren Haynes, long-time reporter around the Calgary Flames. He had this tweet last night. Lots of, whatever it is, lots of swirling chatter about upcoming decision
Starting point is 00:03:28 regarding Rory Cairns, who is now waiver eligible. Between his NHL call up in January, I'm now just quickly paraphrasing. Two preseason games this year, the sixth rounder from 2020, has one goal and six assists in seven points in his time with the flames. Whatever.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Last year, as an HL all-star, 61 points and 63 games. In this economy, goals starved, you don't want to lose a 23-year-old point producer. Well, if he's a quad A guy, you can lose him. Is he in NHEL? That's the question. And so yes. But for the flames in their spot. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Do you put a little bit more. value in a guy who has shown very well at the AHL. Maybe. Find his stats, Jack. Find like this hockey DB like he's a talented offensive player. He's absolutely an elite HL player. Where do you put him at the NHL and who are you taking out of the lineup? That's the same HAL players can't make lots like there's tons. There's guys that make really good money to play in the A that are never going to be
Starting point is 00:04:33 NHLers because of a one flaw that they're missing. And for Karens, there's always been questions about his conditioning and that he can't really defend. Oh, he wasn't tops? He was definitely not tops. No. See, but if he showed up, it was tops,
Starting point is 00:04:45 I would question that too. The hell's going on? I think you'd like it if he showed up. He was not top of the table? No, that doesn't mean he can't be a good player, but I mean, there are guys that absolutely filled in it
Starting point is 00:04:56 in the American League that never turned into good NHLers. We saw it with Matthew Phillips. All right, here we go. 118. It's a lot of points. Yeah, it piled it up in the O. That's a big. big jump.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Yeah, I think he. So for those that are only listening, he doubled. Sue Greyhounds in his final season had 118 points in 67 games with the Sue. I think he went back as a 20. Yeah, it must have been. First year pro, he ends up spending most of this time in the East Coast League with the Rapid City Rush. He's pretty much a point game guy there. Goes to the Wranglers, 32 and 54.
Starting point is 00:05:32 And then last year, 61 points in 63 games. Yes. and then on a short stint had four assists in five games. I'm like two in his first game, right? Yeah. He's a talented offensive player. Can he keep up? I haven't noticed.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Skating's not a strength, conditions is not a strength, defense isn't a strength. So when you're measuring him against a Kirkland or a pospousal, that's where I think it gets hard for this guy to make the team. Never mind Morton. Well, he's not pospical, though. No. And so it's like if you're picking between the two,
Starting point is 00:06:02 you just gave possible a two-year extension at pretty decent money. I wonder, like I think we'll see them on waivers pretty quick, like before the season starts. And because those stats are all correct. Right. But I also won't be surprised if 31 GMs say, we're not claiming out. Yeah. And that's sort of the mark of a quad A player. Very good at the first developmental level.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Can't, you know, crack a top league roster. Was not a great night for the, uh, Miramanovs and beans of the world. A lot of vitriol spewed at them on the Twitter machine. Jake Bean got hit hard along the sideboards, left the game, did come back. Was not. They have too many of those guys. Yeah, those are your seven, eight, right? They have too many guys that aren't good enough to play in the NHL.
Starting point is 00:06:54 If you wanted to be like an Elias Salovia of them play really well, I'd love to see one of these guys on waivers because some of them might just take them. Like, that guy can go sit in the press box and eat popcorn. You don't need two of them here. But, man, they both make. Too much money is the other thing. Like, no one's going to waive those guys for. What's Merrill make?
Starting point is 00:07:10 I know Bean makes 1-75. Well, Muriel's one plus. They signed them to an extension. Not long after you got here. There's a lot of money. There's a contract going last year at this time. What's that? But I mean, what is Miramano?
Starting point is 00:07:22 He played, you know what? Like, as crazy as it is it is, like Miramanoff spent over a third of year with Uigh. We have this conversation all the time. And it's a tip of the captain McKenzie Weaker. It doesn't make him any bad. better or it's the fact that he spent time there it's a coach's decision it's how much you's what kind of depth of you got it's i'm literally suggesting point on waivers you don't need to have this fight with me i want me over i want mural on way okay is that clear yes thank you it's fine it's just
Starting point is 00:07:47 bring that up well he played second no no because i was s talking so he was just trying to no but look you had to give it a try he was always a project not a prospect in that trade there are some tools but he's not an offensive defenseman and he's not terribly physical and isn't defend that wall so what are you yeah we're hoping one of those things would be the case give me that list well so he's like oh he used to be a forward you must be no offensive defense was like no there's no there's like okay well we're playing him on the third pair can he be no that's not really a strength well is he really physical no he's not huh okay well we'll see on waivers in the fall to find a role dean everyone's got to be fair like that's kind of the spot
Starting point is 00:08:26 the braden pahalls and joll handleys were when the flames got him off waivers they were guys that you're like yeah if you're in a pinch they can play but they're not everyday NHELers and since those guys have come to Calgary they've proven to be NHL so be to beat a dead horse no it's good I'm actually and I'm not saying I'm saying we I agree with everything he's saying I do too that's what I mean we're going to
Starting point is 00:08:48 turn the corner on the dead horse we're back to the same thing oh we just talked about the forwards well there's no room to bring anyone in even though no one's really that good or standing out I don't know I think their third and fourth line could be really good and that's the problem for someone making this team What the, are you talking?
Starting point is 00:09:05 Like, I think Frost, Farabee, Sheringovych could be a really good third line. When you look around the league where most teams have to pay superstars huge dough, they have to like skimp on their. Yes, but that's not, that's the problem. I think, okay, if you're the third line center because McDavid and Drysidal are ahead of you. Oh, yeah, that's, that is some serious depth. Yeah, I'm not saying the Flames for four groups good. What I'm saying is it's going to be hard for someone to crack the bottom six
Starting point is 00:09:30 because I think it's a good bottom six. Their top six is not good. They don't have a top line. Their top line would be a second line of most teams. This is what I'm saying. No, and I know exactly what he's saying. Yeah, I know exactly what he's saying. Because I do agree.
Starting point is 00:09:41 It's not. Yeah, from giving check marks to the fourth line even, we just don't have a top top. Yeah. It's not giving check marks at the top six guys. It's saying that all of those guys should have better seasons you'd hope than they had a year ago. It was a came in injured. It was not good for Sharon. But Farby has shown in the league that he can play better than he did.
Starting point is 00:09:58 I mean, you got to score 30 in the sleep in terms of offense and Frost. But anyway, So we were talking about the D and dump some of the I want to see one or both of those guys in waivers. Bring the kids. Like honestly, I don't.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Perik's going to take one of the spots. Because when you look at right now, just looking on. Yeah, but start building together. Don't just bring, let the kids play. Like I wouldn't be surprised in the spring if you've got Bristevich and Solov
Starting point is 00:10:25 having games played in this league and you're ready to cut bait with both, if not one of Bean and Mirama. I do wonder if Bristavich is going to be, just a good, steady... They want him here. You look at his... When you look at his age and the A
Starting point is 00:10:39 in his production position, like, it projects nicely. He's not going to be a star, but he's a very nice... He had that one year with real gaudy numbers, right? He said, ooh, look at this guy. I don't think he's going to be that at the NHL level, but I think if he can evolve that other part of his game
Starting point is 00:10:52 and you'd be able to... Jay McKee's coach. Yeah, that's right. It's the McKee bump. Yeah, it is. Yeah. He just, he looks like a guy that is going to fill a role here for... Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:03 for a while. And so if you're there picking between Miramanov and Bean, who you know exactly what they aren't at this point, if Pristevich gets off to a good two-month start, like, yeah. Yeah, so Bean has one year left at 1.75. Miramatov one year left, 1.25. Yeah, it's like, and they're both. You're hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Starting point is 00:11:21 I'm, yeah, I can get out of the Bean and Miramanoff business today. If I need to, I'd be fine with that. I like what Pahal does, but we even saw that last year. They really did not move him up. He's a third pair right-shot guy. He was in that. Third pairing. And they kept him there regardless of what was going on above.
Starting point is 00:11:36 And to be fair, like when you think about the identity of a third pair, like he does it well. He's physical. He's not afraid to scrap. Very simple game. Don't give him a ton of minutes. He's your right shot third pair guy, period. What are we going to say the retro? I say God love him.
Starting point is 00:11:52 Yeah. Sasker. Yeah. Sasker. What were his? Well, I don't want you looking at. I just wanted to see because, because I, 14 minutes was his average. 14, 14 a night.
Starting point is 00:12:04 That's it. Sixth defensemen should get. Yeah, perfect. That's where he needs to be. And that's a good fine. That's a waiver pickup. You turn them into a third pair guy. Great work.
Starting point is 00:12:13 It's not sexy. It's not a star. It's better than what being in Miramatov can do on those third pairs. Yeah. He could have called me, Craig. Could have called you for what to play? Some insights on why you're spending money on some of these. Dopes.
Starting point is 00:12:29 That's what you're used. I don't want to say dopes because you're real good people. Good guys. guy's doing got to have a good guy in the room but dope's like people don't you don't you don't mean that they're stupid or anything it's just kind of it's almost kind of an endearing like we're all dope out these dope so much of dopes it's not a derogatory it's not even a dope smoker that's not we're not getting at that either but you look at that d for it's like weger ball anderson
Starting point is 00:12:50 Hanley bean miramanov pahall well perrack's got to be in there sorry so okay so we're going to move one of you for peric and that's you can make you can you can I can make an argument that if Perak steps in, you're kind of like, okay, I've got another kid that you think might be able to be a player, you're, get rid of the dead weight. And I've, again, I feel bad because they don't need to get stepped on. They're just doing their best. And their best just isn't NHL caliber.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Yeah, there's seven, eight defensemen. Yeah, when you talk about being in Muramano, they just are. Yeah. And it's like, it's, there's been enough runway. They're at an age where it's, you kind are what you are. Yeah. You're not 21. Listen to names again.
Starting point is 00:13:35 For the D. So like the way I would draw it up, if it's fair. Go ahead, Ryan. Like I would love to see a little bit of Perak and Weiger. I don't care about paring. I'm just saying for one to six or seven. In the organization, if you were, you're not, but we argued. But if Anderson was staying and you went one to seven, how does your DECOR look?
Starting point is 00:13:57 D. It's, it's, like how are you grading it in the, league. It's okay. It's not great. I think it's middle third. Like we're missing, like, Uighur's a very good defenseman. He does pretty much everything and he had to play with a dope for the whole season, whether that was Miramano over Hanley.
Starting point is 00:14:14 Do we want to explain dope again? We just explained it. That one felt like it was a bit more, a more derog. He literally played with a waiver claim level player the whole season. So kudos to Uighur. You had Ball and Anderson together the entire season. And then what you're left with is Pahal and the third pair
Starting point is 00:14:30 with, well, this year, Zambah. Perks going to be on the roster. So that makes your 7-8 being Miramanov. I just don't see them having Zane here and in the rafters more than he's playing. No, I don't want to. That wasn't the point of what I was getting at. No, no one's saying that. It was actually that if you listed those players, I don't, yeah, you don't, maybe you aren't top third, but I would, that's not a bad list of defenseman. Especially if Perak looks comfy. Yeah. And that, yeah, that's a big piece of it.
Starting point is 00:15:02 And do you mean, I guess, like, you mean today or are you talking about as you move forward? I'm saying one to six. If Porek's capable. He's in there if he's capable. You're going, that D-Core is solid. If Hanley Pahal is your third pair. Yes. You're happy with that.
Starting point is 00:15:19 If Ball Anderson's your second pair, that's great. And if Wigger and Porek could make it work and that's the big. Or whatever. The four interact. Those top four, if Porek can keep up there and interact and he dropped down to five sometimes, but effective on the PowerPoint, whatever it happens to be, the decors...
Starting point is 00:15:38 It's tough to see a pathway for being a Miramanoff to get significant time. That's kind of the brass tax of it all. You'd rather not. And then if you're a guy like Elias Salobio, it's like, well, shit, this is a guy that you might want to see a little more. But I'm trying to...
Starting point is 00:15:54 He's young. You don't know what necessarily his ceiling is. You absolutely know what the ceilings of being a mere man of are. See, I'm trying to start the argument that maybe we've been too harsh. Your goalie's good, right? Goalie's top 10 in the league.
Starting point is 00:16:08 Goleys good. If Perx decent and that's your six, those are your top six defensemen. You better get Anderson signed. What's wrong with this? Do you look so? Anderson's right shots. If you're going to move them, that's correctus.
Starting point is 00:16:19 Right? I get it. Because yeah, but then if one goes out. Yeah. Injuries, is, okay, well, now we're bringing Bean or someone's moving back up. Or so now. Yeah, like if Weger gets hurt. If Weger gets hurt, you're painting the barn.
Starting point is 00:16:36 Jack, do you want to go for a drink? These guys, they got to be negative all the time. I'm trying to bring some positivity. We're almost into the weekend. The goal is good. The decor is solid. Bottom six is great. Bottom six, we've got, if we could just missing a dry saddle.
Starting point is 00:16:51 That's all you need. You know how sometimes, and it happened this week, we were maybe critical. Ryan was in, he was maybe a little grumpy, and then we argued about the cracking for 45 minutes. On the flip side, it's sometimes I think you're, in too good a mood and then you're too nice oh for Christ's sakes you know I just well no one's raising their hands saying they're nice that's a pretty that's a pretty good solid D right there that's what we got a goalie what are you talking about it's happened did you
Starting point is 00:17:16 get something in those nachos the other night at the rank are you uh down the road yeah that's got of this podcast and chicanery but look they had nice nice to be nice for the flames okay you got a good decor love to it is not a sexy roster no but they had 96 points last year and like, who did you delete from that girl? Nobody. Nobody's gone that was here that made an impact. Like, oh, your backup goalie. Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 00:17:43 And I do think. You're going to play Wolfmore anyway. It's hard to see where the goals come. But at the same time, I do feel strongly that there's real bounce back opportunities here. You're without Zeri for a good chunk of the year. You got nothing out of Farabee. Sharon Govich turned it on at the end of the year. And even at the time the season was over,
Starting point is 00:18:03 his goal totals are pretty decent. There's opportunity there for some individuals, three or four guys that you can realistically really see having more offense in their game. You could say that, you know, Father Time's undefeated and maybe you get 90% of the production of Nazim, and that's still a really good year for a guy that's slotted one line higher than he should be.
Starting point is 00:18:25 You could say maybe you get 90% of Huberto, but to your point, you'd expect more from Zeri, you'd expect more from Fairby and Frost, expect more from Sharon Govich. And when we saw from Klapka down the stretch, like, I feel like there's, there's a bit of ceiling that they're going to explore there. Like, I'm not saying he's a top six guy, but like, who are we talking about? Clapka.
Starting point is 00:18:49 Yeah, I'm going to leave Klapka out. I want him to do well. I just mean, like, if he had how many goals last year in how many games, like, he's going to score more than the 10 games. Because he's going to play more than 10 games. Well, but how many did he get? But then he's taking some. That's six and 31 for the season.
Starting point is 00:19:05 I can look into his game log and see where. So 12? Play a lot more than I thought. Geez. If you go to 12 goals for Klapka, that's six goals you didn't have last year. You could also see. Somebody else was in the line. But I mean, not as good.
Starting point is 00:19:22 If he has 12 and 31, okay. Yeah. Like, are you getting 28 out of Huberdow again? Like I said, like 90% of his production is reasonable. Same with cadre. But there's four guys minimum. I'm arguing for a fifth that you can expect improvement from. It would be shocking to see Igor not do better than last year, given how pedestrian he was.
Starting point is 00:19:39 And he still ended up getting, what, to 17? Yeah, Sharon Goldich had 17 goals. And it's just miserable fighting through injury, never quite looked right until the last month's season. Coronado had 24. You'd expect to increase there. I mean, for Zeri had 13 and 54 games. Need more than 13 for him. And Marty Pospisal.
Starting point is 00:19:59 I'm leaving him flat. He had four. No. I can't leave him flat. You need more. No, what was it, where were his points? 25 points in 81 games. That's flat.
Starting point is 00:20:11 You guys have too much faith in these dusters. He's all over the mind. What has happened? What just happened? It's just U-turns in 180s every day. And I don't know if he's being a prick or if this is CTE or like what's going on here. Both can be true. Yeah, it could be everything.
Starting point is 00:20:28 It's just a lovely popery. I want, I like the Klapka. He was awesome. There's going to be a spot. It happens. Yeah, just like we saw a possible. Oh, now I'm in the NHL and that's what I'm to boss. That excitement is.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Okay. Now I really actually, it's January. I'm still, this is great, but this is a tough league. I don't know. Pospesal's been around enough. He's not going, like, I was surprised about that. He can play a role. And he, they got his, I honestly believe that they pulled the legs out from under him when they
Starting point is 00:21:04 gave him shit for taking a penalty and your team. wet themselves. Yeah. And he started to play a different way. He had, what, three or four stern conversation with George Peros and talk to people around the team, that effective? Yeah. But the reason he was in the league and was getting contracts is because of the way he played. 100%.
Starting point is 00:21:23 And so that's the rub. So how do you stay on that line without crossing it too much? Cross it. But then you lose both. So you stop playing like a bowl and a China shop. So, okay, the penalties went away. But so too did your offense. And your effectiveness.
Starting point is 00:21:36 this. Is he offensive though? Like, I know we all pray. But just four goals. Christ. What Lomburg have? Not three. Well, but I'm not.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Why do we think that Pospicel is going to outsk, like, based on what? I'm not, I'm not, it just, he's a slightly more offensive version of Womberg. Yeah, but you're going to get stuck in a roll with a bunch of guys that don't score. I get eight the year before. So. And it tumbled a four. Tumbled. What was his first?
Starting point is 00:22:08 But I mean, eight and 63, four and 81. But to me, it was, you noticed him every night. What was this? I agree with you. But it wasn't based on his goals. I agree. I agree. I don't run around.
Starting point is 00:22:18 I don't care about it. So I don't care if you score goals. You're fine. I'm not just, if I can say for, I don't, where is the offense going to come? I'm not looking to clap before it. I'm really not looking at possible support. No. Morgan Frost needs more than three.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Fairby Frost. Like, that's where it's got to come from. You got to have some guys bounce back. And maybe you get more, you should get more from Coronado. You know what? You're moving to 40. Like he'll be a 30 goal guy. You'll be thrilled.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Yeah. That's a second full season in the league. He's a 30. You'd love that. Hence the extension. And Cadre with 35. I'm not going to do that again. I'm guessing.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Not happen. Love him too. Prove everyone wrong, Nas. There's the chip on the shoulder. That's right. That's right. Pindicode you're terrible.
Starting point is 00:23:00 Please. Please, please. I'm very impressed with this play. beyond Darrell season. It's been great under Huska. Yeah, like the weakness of this team's glaring and obvious. It's their top two lines don't look like top two lines. Jeez, yeah, because if you work, that's what I was trying to get at, Dean,
Starting point is 00:23:20 until you shut me up. I was trying to work my way up the roster from the, you know, the spine noodles. Isn't that? Good. B plus, A? I'd say a minus at least. Okay, A minus. Like, Wolf was unreal.
Starting point is 00:23:35 Perreck. he's in the line up now. Grade your D-Core. D-core? B. B-minus at the worst. Yeah, sure. It's middle of the pack.
Starting point is 00:23:44 Got to be. Bottom six? Solid, yeah. B-plus. B-plus? So we're averaging out at a B-plus. Yeah, all you're missing is the hardest thing to get, which is people that can score goals in the league.
Starting point is 00:23:56 That's why your team doesn't score enough. But they got good team and a good goalie. We can overcome this. This is the team that Ryan Huskins is to try to win three-two with. Like, let's not make a mistake. They're not changing their MO. They're like, let's go just get five. This is going to be structure, low risk.
Starting point is 00:24:12 I love structure. Hockey. Have a better power play. They're going to make some change. Who was here last year running the power play? Was it two years ago? Same guys that were here now. Wasn't it that special?
Starting point is 00:24:24 Yeah, Mark Savard went back to Toronto. Yeah. Let the power play be a little better. Perick wants to be part of that. Great. Then all of a sudden, hey? Was it the cowboy that got that straighted out? I thought we call was on the penalty.
Starting point is 00:24:37 Yeah, we were talking about it the other day was because call came in after Larson left and there was some distribution of duties there for sure. The cowboy, we can stick with that, eh? Cowboys. You know that of the sheriff. I kind of like that too. Yeah. He's too on the nose.
Starting point is 00:24:50 He looks, he's just. Does you have the mustache back or no? I don't know. We need enough to. Can we call? Can you go down to the dome to all? I'll text to Connie and see. Important question.
Starting point is 00:25:01 Yeah.
