Our home ice advantage, we don't have to worry about that anymore. It's done. By my math, nine of the next. Big stress relief. Nine of the next 11 on the road. 11, yeah. So nine wins. Wait, wait.

What happens if it doesn't go well on the road, though? Well, then they've got to start planning some neutral site games. You've got a Kansas City exhibition, send them over to Helsinki. Let's go. Right. And if they get home. Mice and the playoffs, can we... That'd be a good problem right now, wouldn't it?

is how awful it is, this homestand, the schedule maker, they're bored, they're tired, their wives are next. their pets heads are falling off. All of that is a big part of why they've been losing these hockey games. Now they're out in the road. They're in hotels. They're bonding. That's right.

he's been one of your more reliable guys. Yeah, makes in a tan of injury and a Connor Mackie grenade handling session. And next thing you know, it's Nick D. Simone making his NHL debut tonight. my 11-year-old who can barely skate, considers himself a defenseman, was watching the game and actually said, what the hell is Mackey doing? We're sitting there in the second level.

We're made of what he said. You can hear the conversations around you because it's quiet. They're down early. And it's like, is that Mackey again? Mackey again? Like,

is the only words you heard were Mackey and expletives through 20 minutes. Poor guy. He was on for all the goal. Well, I'd set up the third with a penalty as well. It wasn't like he was just on. He was racing out of the box of a penalty he took. That's a shitty period of hockey.

It's not great. Yeah, it's not great. But the guys were building them up. That dog was doing some things. I was saying to Dean before the show, if there's a six flags near Buffalo, the craziest roller coaster's got to be nicknamed the Zad Dog or Zadorov.

Like, the experience is unbelievable. How long's the line for the Zodorov? And it's like, I can't do the Zadora of anymore. I did it once. I just, like, I had vertigo for a week. Can you buy express passes for the Zadorov? It's like, yeah, it's not the longest line, but it is the craziest ride. Yeah.

But it's just like, it's the two brain fart decision. where you're like, why do you think you're Nick Liddstrom? You can read the back of your hockey card too. I don't know that I would have found that reading my notes because you notice the brain cramps with Zodorov, but like hasn't been bad in terms of when he's on the ice, shot at chances, etc. Hence the reason advanced stats can take a hike.

but you're willing to tell me that Zadora has looked good in your eyes? No, I didn't say that at all. I said the metrics have liked them to this point of the season. But that's what I'm saying is that like I just said, my viewings,

would not have arrived at the same point, but it's one of those things where maybe it's not pretty, but yet when he's on the ice, they aren't getting a lot of shot against, right? Like, those two things can exist at the same time. It's not super likely, but... But you can spend two minutes in your own end and not give up a shot.

Anyway, the fact that they actually support his play is staggering, and that's why the stupidity of it all is, there's no way he's playing good hockey. Like I said, it's the craziest ride at the amusement park, but the results could be a lot worse. I don't think he's been like on the ice for like 15 goals against or anything. But that's what's funny about, so now I'm mad at you because you just at me, which is ignorant.

Well, dude, come on. Like, there's only one. area of any shell. You're actually bishing. You're actually complaining about his play. But if I, but the advanced stats say he's playing good. So he must be playing good.

Not I'd say that I'm willing to say both things. I understand that. I just said the advanced stats clearly aren't showing how he's playing. He's been playing shitty. That's my opinion on it. And it's not just, we have seen, and I, again, I feel like we're seeing things that went away when Daryl took over the team. Like we're back in previous coaching territory. lack of intense. This all looked like Sutter had nipped it in the bud when he came in. And now it just looks like you're really back to square one. I think when, I mean, again, we're caught up in what we saw most recently. That's a very normal thing for the human brain. We have to remember that after 40 minutes against Edmonton, none of these things were super prevalent. There was an odd period here there.

Okay. But it's been a bad week. and I thought frankly after the first, given they were down to essentially four NHL defensemen and Mackey having an awful night, that it was better for the final 40. Because even the first game of the season, the first shot went in and then two nights later,

it's kind of the same thing. This, starting on time. We talked about that all the time. What do you got to do? And they fell behind two nothing to Vegas and Carolina. So again, they're on the road. Everything's fixed. And I guess

So there's two things. There's like they don't look like a setter team and starting on time. And that's part of not looking like a setter team. But really what I think is the bad sign is that turnover's lack of work ethic, that in the last week, I didn't see a lot of in the first seven games.

Like just sloppy. Like the Seattle game was garbage. Like Nashville was a deplorable effort. And I thought because they fell behind early in Jersey, they actually did put their work booths. on a bit, albeit now you've got the injury bug fighting you. But it hasn't been a team that looked anything like the one Daryl operated last year. It looked like the one trying to figure out Daryl two seasons ago after they canned Ward,

where it was like you saw flashes of a really strong possession team. And then it was like, oh yeah, they still haven't really learned this stuff, have they? Silver lining. There's a lot wrong right now. The lines went back. We were bitching and complaining. They had to. They just made no sense.

They went back to the original lines. they didn't look a whole lot better. The power play is right in the ditch. Yeah. Right now. Four games, nothing, not a sniff. You said it off for 13. And I don't see them like threatening.

And they looked really good again until that Oilers game. Yeah. It's like, I don't know. And I obviously, Eubertoe's in a real rough tar off here, like probably one of the worst 10 game stretches of his career. But you can see in his decision. making, he's feeling it, he's in his own head, he's trying to get cute. And I don't know that he shot the puck. Everything has to be a sexy pass apparently. Like just fucking put it on net man. He's done. He's done. He held up on the effing. He kind of, he double clutched on the effing.

Soft. Take that back. Was that 15 bucks? Take that. Can you play that sound effect back? Huberdough, one shot in that hockey game, just under two minutes on the power play. I just think if he held the puck 12 times in the offensive zone in a position to shoot he passed at 11 right he's just trying so hard to set up something sexy just shoot it and it was another one of those nights notice him in a great spot to shoot yeah it's just always yielding always always always I don't we like honestly

how much do we see this guy play we love the stats you knew Florida was a dynamic offense but like here we go no no and I just I don't if if you asked flames fans to describe he were to before the He got here. I don't know how many descriptions would actually fit who he is. Like, clearly the GM of the team knows what he is as a player. Like, you know who saw him play lots? Tell me.

You know who some play lots? Bill Zito. The management? The management in Florida. Yeah. He decided that probably 85 assists is not going to be a regular occurrence. No, but he doesn't have a 150 point guy. Jesus, if he can be an 80 point guy, you'd be thrilled right now.

To like, I don't know stylistically that people knew, like, how much did we watch Florida? I'm not saying like, ooh, I was way wrong. what I thought Hubert was going to be. I'm saying, I don't know that, like, Flamescans see the hockey card and they're like, oh, he's big. He's more physical than Johnny. No, he's not. He's hardly physical at all. But like, people had this image of him that wasn't that real. Right? Like, he's not physical. He's big, but he's not like he doesn't pay people.

And I think he, but you're also expecting him to replace some of the flash that. Yes. He's been a perennial kind of a top 10. scorer in the national hockey league. Yeah, I think people know that. And right now he's well under a point of game. Yeah. Right.

And see, and it wasn't just line. Is he making the moves or was it? No, he didn't play with Barkov much the last two, three years. They did away back, but it was a lot of Sam Bennett. But it's secondary. Sorry, go ahead. Well, I'm just saying that that's fine. And I'm not saying that.

Barkov, but if you're not playing with Barkov, who's the other team covering? I mean, it's kind of a cross-me-alkin thing, right? One guy's superb at both ends and one's an offensive guru. I don't think that's why those teams win is they're hard to defend. And I know you said 80 points would be great. He's done it twice. Well, I mean, how many, is it injury issues or what are we talking here?

Like, point per game is kind of what we're talking about. Like, if you play 70, you get 70, I feel like that's what we're talking about. We had 92 points and 82 games and 115 points. points in 80 games. And those are the only times he's broken. Regretts just. He had 78, I guess. I don't think it doesn't look good.

because when he plays 69 games and has 78 points, that's a really good year. When he plays 55 games because of, you know, the pandemic and gets 61 points, that's a really good year. Four years in a row, he's been a point per game player. The question that Flames fans are asking themselves right now is, is something wrong with human, or is this just a bad stretch?

And then sure enough, he'd end up at 35 or 40 by the end of the year. Like, is it just a bad 10-game segment

or is there something fundamentally not fitting with his line, this team, this coach, or something else? And that's the question. I wish I had five points in a bad 10-game segment. Well, and it just feels like one of these nights the power play is going to look right, and it's going to be, oh, one goal, three helpers, and away we're back to nine points and 11 games, no so on. Until it turns into a nightmare and never, the flip, the switch never flips and it just continues on.

And we're all like, oh, boy. Yeah, it would be a huge outlier for that to happen, four consecutive point per game seasons and then like, listen. Not, right? The good news is, though, the flames have never gone and made a trade with Florida and brought in a guy who saw his offensive numbers hit the skids. Bowmeister. There's no history there?

Yokinen. Boeaster had back-to-back 15 goal years, came to Calgary, would have three the next year. Was Yokinen in Florida when they traded from? I thought it was in Arizona. Oh, you might have been Arizona. Either way. And like the other way, at least it doesn't

work. We never saw a guy go there in his number of skyrocket Sam Bennett. Chuck's doing all right. He's going to get in the wallet. He's going to miss a couple. He's got a pliper game. The third period, Daryl decided to bench Milan luch each. Nothing. Zero shifts in the third for Luch.

One for the Rune Dog, as Pinder calls. And Backlin played two shifts, then sat for the rest of the third, got one in overtime, the penalty kill, which they did not kill off, as you may. Do we mention the Devils won the game? We did, I think. You noted that they're losing, and I said, hey, they got one point. So not totally surprised. I don't know.

Darrell loves his fourth line guys. He loves Luch. He was on the second line. And that is something, right? Because last week we talked about it. If Jacob Pellche had some of the turnovers Looch had against the Nashville or I guess Seattle. Yeah. So Penthouse, the Oathouse for Luch, it's Roondog.

But for Backland, I was kind of curious because I haven't really had a problem with how Backland's been playing. Now, it could be very spotty. It might be just one shift. One battle or something. One battle in a game where you're, now you've lost four in a row and it just rubs the coach the wrong way and you sit them down. You're that or you like someone or you're saying, we're all three lines and someone,

someone's going to pay the price. But no, I agree with that. I didn't think there was an egregious night for Backland so much as, you know, he just, it felt like he was the odd man out. The other two, it's like, yeah, you're going to have to do a little more. So retro, from a coaching standpoint, there's things that you do. You change the lines. You bench guys.

You'll rip them a bag, whatever the case. So we've seen the line change. We've seen the goalie really neither here nor there. I thought Markson was fine on Saturday. I thought he was too. I hung out to dry. And honestly, like he made some big save to keep him in that game.

They're down, what, early, big time there. So I, he's played a lot of cards. So my, that's, that's my concern is that Daryl, I think that Daryl right now, or the coming into this, year. I mean, he's, he's been around. He's done it all, but he's not one, he wants to be in control of what's happening and make the right moves. And he's trying to think, but I think he might be over overhandling it. Yeah. That line change thing is so weird, right? You're like a one fluky mistake against Edmonton. Yeah. That's it. Exactly. Like I, and there's a history of Daryl wanting

things so much that he'll do almost, like we said, overhandle, overkill. He can push too many buttons sometimes whereas it's like, wait a minute, there was changes, let this team morph into what it's going to become. They were fine. Pinder said they're a goal

away from beating the Oilers. That might keep the momentum going. All of a sudden you're sure, shit, not changing those lines and they beat Eminson, right? Yeah, right? There's no way. You're changing all these lines. That's not working. You're trying to send a message by play and luch up the line-

You're benching them two nights later. Yeah. Yeah, it's, be careful you don't confuse and lose those guys, right? We all know Darrell push his button. He's hard on guys and he's a great coach and he demands a lot. There's going to be around enough of those guys for a while now that they, it's going to be like, okay, enough, quit it, right?

Like a player does get to that point with Darrell. I wanted to ask you about this because it actually came up at dinner the other night at the game. And just the topic of this. Wonder behind closed doors. How is Darrell handling things? This was before the three unanswered in the first there, whatever you want to call it, three straight in the first. And then the benchings in the third and into overtime. When there was a time where you guys, you the veterans on the Flames team, would take the room.

I just tell Darrell, whether it be postgame or whatever. No, no, we got this. Don't come in. Did that happen? When I was playing? Yeah. All the time. You have to do it with Darrell and certain coaches.

You have to take control of the room. But I don't, I mean, but the Flames team this year, they've got enough veteran guys. They should know it. They've got lots of guys that know Darrell. But there's new guys, right? Yeah. There's a lot of new young. Huberdo's got an A.

Like, I don't know. But you're not, you're not relying on Huberdo and the new guys to do that. It's the guys that know, Darrell, and have been around it that should be going, whoa, whoa, whoa, we got this. But you know what it is, retro, is guys like you and Robin, comfortable, confident, and are of an ilk that you're strong enough to make that step. There might be some guys in the room who will be thinking, God, the last thing we need right now is him coming in here and ripping a again or doing whatever.

We just got to keep them out. There may not be guys who are wired to do that. Or at least right now, not yet. Codry, for example, we talked about it. Looks like a guy that if they were going to name a captain, he'd be a strong candidate. Is he less than a month into his time with Daryl going to tell Daryl what's up?

Or is it going to have to be a guy that was here last year and when Dary took over for Ward that's going to be like, we see how this goes, we have to say something now. Like, I think if Codry, and Uberto and Uberto and Wigger and Rooney had all been here a couple of years, that's a conversation they obviously would have, but I just don't know if you're comfy. Well, I'm just saying. That's what I'm saying.
