Starting point is 00:00:00 We were sitting watching the game last night. And it's like, they're playing hard. And they have been for them out. There were a few games during that, whatever it was, the seven or eight games skid, where it looked like they may not win all season. But you knew at some point you win games, you play better. And that's, and that's what we're seeing is they're winning games and they are playing better. It's the, the rodeo analogy.
Starting point is 00:00:32 I didn't like the bull last night. But yeah, the flames as the, as the bull rider looked strong last night. I don't know what to expect on this road trip. I think I know what to expect. But is there any part of, is there any part of you that thinks that we overreacted that? I've believed it for a decade. It's recently you watch a bunch of losses and it's just easy to slide into that way of thinking.
Starting point is 00:00:59 No, since Goddrow and them left. I don't. You can't compare yourself to Dallas because you're not a winning. team. You can't say we like the Dallas model when you don't win. So that, so what Don said there is completely out to lunch in my opinion. I don't, again, I don't care so much what he said, but you can't say you're Dallas. You're just not. You'd like to be Dallas. I think it would be Dallas. Hey, let's just draft some stars in the late first round. Cool. Like, easy to say, very hard to do. Yeah. And if you have you been doing, you have been a lock for the playoffs for the last decade?
Starting point is 00:01:35 Like, what are we talking about? Now, I asked you guys that a few days ago, maybe last week, are the flames as bad as they've been playing or a 32nd place team? Maybe they're not a 32nd place team, but they're still not positioned to have a decade of deep playoff runs. So my opinion on the team is still the same. You need stars, and you can go and look at who wins in the playoffs, and they build those teams out,
Starting point is 00:02:05 and they're really effing. Tampa Bay did it. Colorado did it. Vegas, a bit of a different animal because they had to come into the league. Every cup winner's got multiple hot top five picks that are huge contributors.
Starting point is 00:02:18 And whether they added them in trade, but via smart management or whether they draft themselves, that's just a fact. Even like St. Louis had, you know, like Beaumester and some really good pie in talent there. And the positioning of the age of the players that the flames have, doesn't go inside with
Starting point is 00:02:37 anything you're expecting diminishing returns for Huberto Cadre, Coleman, Weiger Anderson because they're on the wrong side of 30 guys don't have career years after 30 9 times out of 10 yes, Gio won in Norris at 35
Starting point is 00:02:52 that's pretty much the Olin'N a Stanley Cup at 35 so I don't I understand what you're saying there I always make a stipulation that's not team success that's one guy Yeah, and they got what, flamed out in the second or first round night? They didn't win.
Starting point is 00:03:09 They've not had a deep run. Like it's, No. It's a little bit talking down to your fan base when you suggest that what you've built is a winning culture. What it really is, it's mediocrity that you've been bad enough that you feel like is winning culture. Winning culture is making the playoffs consistently, winning rounds, getting deep into the postseason. They haven't done that since 2004. So if Don Maloney thinks $5.50.
Starting point is 00:03:34 hockey and a wild card or third in your division is winning culture, that might be a big problem about why they don't want to rebuild. They seem to think that's good enough. That's what those comments really rubbed me the wrong way on. That's not winning culture. Oh, they like each other. Great. Now can you win? Because also that'll help the bottom line, which I know we care about too. It's exactly how I felt when I read that. And again, we're really kind of dissecting comments and it's maybe unfair to Maloney because he did a couple interviews and we were still talking about it. But I can appreciate what he's saying. If you're going to have younger players, you want them in an environment where the culture and the mood is, is a positive one. And we've seen maybe Vancouver,
Starting point is 00:04:14 things are toxic. It can be tough on younger players and all that. You don't want that. But to talk about, we need, we don't need fewer cadres. We need more cadres. We want a winning culture. You've missed the play. This looks, you're on track to miss for the fifth straight year or I mean, this is not a winning. You may have, so I was going to ask you, Retro, I asked Ryan yesterday, I mean, you played, you've been in rooms, you've talked to guys, can you have strong and good culture, strong culture with a team that doesn't win a lot? Because this is not, this is not winning culture.
Starting point is 00:04:50 That's the difference. Can you have a good culture where everyone gets along, I guess? Yeah, we missed the playoffs once in Buffalo. We're all best friends. And if you ask any of the guys that were on that team, they loved each other. So can you? Sure. But let's golf in May.
Starting point is 00:05:05 This is great. Like you're not winning. What the fuck's that do for the fans? People that are paying the bills back to the bottom line thing where it's to kiss my ass. So you want me to buck up? Like that's the real problem where it's like that's not a winning culture. Happy to support the team. And he can come turn around and say, well, is bringing in a bunch of 18 year olds going to create a winning?
Starting point is 00:05:30 maybe not. I think he's right when he says you have to hit on your picks. And whether it's pick 18 or pick 8, you better do well or maybe even pick 38. But you can't sell us on this BS that this is a winning culture. And this is, but it's frustrating because we shouldn't even be dissecting it anymore. It's old news.
Starting point is 00:05:55 But it does bring out some emotion because you're like, what you're, I don't agree with what he's saying. He's entitled to say what he wants. I understand his points of view. He's not bullshitting, but I don't agree with it. I've said it for a long time. I've said, fuck, I said trade Giordano and people who went ballistic.
Starting point is 00:06:14 And maybe I'm wrong, but you ended up with nothing for it. Zero. Zero for that guy. You've hung on to guys too long in the past and turned them into nothing. It's not asset management. And I don't think it's a forward-thinking approach. to the game. And look, to your point,
Starting point is 00:06:34 you're Bill and are you on the team, you hire the people you want, they can go speak in front of the media whenever they want. Just don't be surprised when there's a massive backlash when you choose to do that. When you want to call mediocrity
Starting point is 00:06:44 winning culture, this is what you're going to get. When you want to put someone out there when you're in 32nd in a 32-32 team league and talk about, you know, working harder and being a good team, this is what you're going to get.
Starting point is 00:06:55 You didn't have to do that. No one said, okay, it's it's Po-ho-day. Everyone has to put their president, out in front of a camera and talk. That was your decision. Elliot Friedman, you know, this guy covers a whole league,
Starting point is 00:07:05 self-inflicted wounds. Doesn't inspire confidence in the organization when you know. Unless, I did think about this. Here's the caveat. I love that word. Dino, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:16 I do. Yeah, you do. Maybe he's a goddamn genius. I did say that. What if he's playing chess and we're playing chess? What of his thing was, I'm going to go out there,
Starting point is 00:07:26 and I'm going to say it, and it's going to be us versus the world. because this is going to cause a shitstorm. Three in a row. Three in a row. Which only further aggravates those who had an issue with the comments in the first place. Well, I don't think you're a very good team. What are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:07:48 We just won three in a row. What are you talking about?
