Hey, how are we doing everybody? Welcome to another week of the, of the podcast of the big show here, the, the barn burner. It's boomer and, and retro. We, we don't have, we don't have Pinder today, but we do have retro. Who's, are you, what do you got there? Is that my chair? That's, uh, yeah. It's empty.

I see that's, uh, how come it's empty? Well, see, here's the thing. I was saying before we got, so I maybe a bit of a quart low. Energy reserves are a little low. So I slept in a little bit. Oh, nice. By the time I got up,

I'm like, okay, Pinder's not here. So we got the Pinder report and I got the things, like the game and stuff. I kind of got doing stuff. And then it's like, I'm not going to have time to get in there. Thanks for letting me know. Well, I did not expect to be here. I had texted Jack.

I was like, you know, I'll, I'll be there. I'm running behind. I got the Pinder report and stuff to put together, but, uh, I don't think the Pinda report, you know, if you sign up for something and put your name behind it. Yeah. It's not the Boomer report. Right. It's not the Jack report.

No. It's a retro report. Like, no. It would take him about 15 minutes to. Probably. Yeah. Well, I don't know. That's the beauty of today's world.

feeling like an idiot yeah yeah yeah that's true well i'm gonna try not to do that we're gonna try keep that free from the uh the pinder reports and the jack put some stuff there we got we got a few things but it's a busy we had a game yesterday i don't know if you knew that there was a game yesterday and there's a game today i forgot there's a game today too game today yeah yeah remember there were i forgot there was a game yesterday because i should have taken my kids six or start great time. Yeah, yeah. So they played in Buffalo just the other day and then came home and then played yesterday.

And now they're back in the road again today. They're in Vancouver tonight. So you believe it? I know. Who put this schedule together? Who's doing this? Well, Batman looked at the team and said they're going to be horse bleep.

So there's no sense catering to them. Right. They're looking for losses. Erting for Hagen's is what I saw. Is that? I think that's a thing. Hurton for Higgins. That is terrible.

I thought there was Hagus, and I have no interest in that. What's his first name? James? Yeah. Jones and for James. Sure. Well, let's start that.

T-shirts. Would that be bad going to Flames games wearing let's lose a bunch of games so we can get a good player t-shirt? It's working now because they're going to try and make the playoffs these dumb bastards. Yeah, I know. I know.

Last night, a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings, who ahead of them in standing, we weren't really sure. I'm going to wait to see, but the LA Kings having a good, having a good start to the season. What was the score? Wasn't that three to one?

I thought you said five three. Three one, I thought I said. Empty nutter. Roondog? Did I say five three? I'm sure you said five three, which I was like,

oh, okay, what am I looking at then? You did say five three. Where would I have seen five three? Because it's possible as my eyes are, scanning sheets i say things that anyway i'm telling you that that's why i'm not there today i'm not right today it's not right um my my eyeballs are hurting um i'm a court low that looks like a cozy sweater though

it is a very cozy that is a winter it's very cozy and i need to be cozy it's getting cold in the uh the little studio here i don't have a furnace really i don't know you need to go they're coming over Are they coming over? Yep. Let me, crystal waters, plumbing and heating. It's the only place I, as soon as something happens, like my brain, you can see what happens. Just quickly, I did all the help I can get.

Okay, so they're good, right? So they've been winning games. Their record is here. That's what they are. Then you watch them and see. Okay. I like this brand. Clark.

He's all right. Um, got a couple of them. I don't mean, like, do you think that part, some of the teams coming into town or maybe looking past the flames and not excited to play here and that's not their best efforts? I don't know to be honest. I mean, it's, but they're not, we think of them a certain way. We think of them as being a team. Well, they're not going to make the playoff.

I just mean, you're a lot of times it's Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, right? That's right. A bit of a swing. Sure. Who's the bottom of the total pole there? Yeah, no. Fair enough. Yeah.

Right. Fair enough. It is what it is. And it's, in a way, it's a great benefit from the flames. Edmonton's going to take up most teams attention. Yeah, they are. Vancouver is the next in line. So anyway, kind of like I thought Buffalo would, it's flat,

one PM start out east on Saturday. It's like, ooh, that'll be tough to get going. And it was apparently. And apparently it was. Yeah. It was exactly. It's funny how some things are exactly what the, how you forecast they're going to be.

So what did, so you watched it on the, did you watch the prime broadcast last? I forgot, was looking for it on TV and it was like, what? This is. Oh. Yes. Yes.

So went downstairs and turned on the prime on the big screen and caught the guy watching football. Oh, yes. There was football last. night as well yeah no did you see the guy when on at the end of the game when they were doing the dust like was it a save or not okay against yeah so they went to the war room oh yeah yeah yeah they went to toronto dude's watching about that that's that's not gary's not gonna like that yeah and there's only one guy in there so you can't pot it off that oh we just had a bunch of TVs it's just not all it was you alone

in a room watching football while doing and then the the phone starts to oh shit damn what did something happen damn well they soon as they realized I think they had it on and they're like wait a minute he's oh off switch cameras right yeah yeah no I thought when you said the guy I thought maybe your kid was downstairs on the oh yeah no I was the big eye and laugh at what I saw that because it took a second for it to register with me too I'm like wait a minute this guy's watching football he's watching the he's watching the he's watching the Dolphons right now. Amazon Prime Night game.

I know how it works when people people are just in tune to dislike what they have a lot of sometimes. You know, the Sportsnet or Hockey Night and Kath, they're going to get shit on. These broadcasters, they're going to, oh, it's going to be, we're going to, we don't like it.

They're no good. And anything new, oh, it was great. It sounds better. It looks better. They're better. It's better. I have to say, though, I enjoyed the broadcast last night.

There's a lot. Now, there's a lot of people. You got Adnan, who we love. He's our boy. But you've got Adnan, and then you got Shane 90, and then you've got Hicks, Thomas Hickey, and then you've got Jody Shelley, and you've got a lot of people for one game.

I get that. But I liked it. I would say I liked it, too. I don't know. I mean, why, I guess cost-wise, it'd be hard to employ them. many people for one game. But when you have to rely on one or two people to call games,

I think it's good to have the different opinions. I do too. And I also, I thought that the setting up in the concourse, the desk and everything, I thought it looked great. Sometimes it can be a bit janky, and you got drunks,

you know, wheeling around and trying to look stupid or whatever. But I, uh, I like that for what it's worth. And Mike for just watching the, the comments come in. Amazon.

Sportsnet got dunked last night. Again, I think, I don't think it was night and day. I don't think there was anything really revolutionary there. But I like the intro with the stuff, the Calgary kind of skyline and the way that they put it together. It felt big. It felt like a big kind of a broadcast where sometimes it just feels kind of like mom and pop stuff.

Well, it is local and regional and you get 82 of them, right? doing one. Fair enough. Got to get Ryan Leslie out of the basement is kind of what it comes down to. He's, I don't know how you, how you describe it or characterize it for a guy that doesn't say a whole lot, that he's not overly, you know, he's not Ron Hickstall smashing his stick on the post or anything, but he looks, he looks like a cocky guy. He looks like a guy that's like, F you guys.

We just, NHL, we just fought. Me and you. You believe it? Um, Rasmus Anderson seven block shots. Leads the NHL with 57 of those. Quit back it in. Yeah. And, uh, Conner's area, another great game.

Could have had a couple. I was worried when he got kind of looked like he got a bit of a slew foot there from that Hellenious bastard landed on his shoulder. He looks like, you know what? He looks like me. He's kind of, every time he gets out of the chair, every time he's, he's making these noises right now. Looks like he's, he's sore.

Looks like there's some, some general soreness. I hope he's not going to be day to day with general soreness. No, he'll be fine. He's young. He's useful. Yeah, he is. But still makes plays almost every game. You see something special out of him.

Coronado gets an assist five points in a four game streak. He does not want to go back down. We talked about it last week. Screw you and your waivers this and entry level that. I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying. I don't want to go anywhere. So we'll see,

uh, we'll see what happens here. They, uh, what'd you, I guess what'd you think of the weekend? I think, well,

I'm, I'm kind of lumping everything together. They, they get down, they battle back and they get points. Maybe it's not a win every time, but they're not throwing in the towel in circumstances where you might expect them to go,

okay, let's move on to the next game. So they're battling back and getting points. I thought the Buffalo was especially now I don't think Buffalo is a great team I don't think Boston's a great team but you get down usually you're going to lose and they were flat but they keep fighting I thought against LA last night first game back after a road trip I don't care if it's a cliche or not it's always hard played well enough to get points and I think that that's just it they're getting the good enough goal tending to give themselves

chance to find their legs. And if they just get competing, the goaltending is keeping them in the games where they're good enough to do to win a few. Yeah. I mean, we're getting far enough into the season where it's like, this is not going to be doom and gloom.

Well, obviously it's not. Yeah, I mean, they're. Oh, year. And so, so what do you chalk that up to? Because we talked about, well,

they're going to come back to never. Oh, it's because they're young and there's no expectations. It's easy to play when you're never going to be criticized for poor play or for losing games. Does that leave you? There's some of that. I think they don't have distractions as far as

what they are, who's leaving, who's coming, who's going. Last year was very much like that. The coach is back for his second year. Very comfortable with most of these players. Costco's. Kirkland's a great example. Worked with them for many years, right? So the coach has a pretty good grasp,

I think, from what I'm watching, of all of his players in what they need. I think he's implemented a situation where they've all bought into us versus the world kind of scenario. Sure. Everyone hates us. You got a young kid goaltender who is very,

very, very talented and is earning his stripes. Do you know what to prove? That doesn't approve for sure. And he had to do it in the minors. So it wasn't some kid freshly drafted. He's had to battle. so I think he he approaches it a little bit differently. Vladars got something to prove.

You want to play in the NHL of Ladar? Well, you better start playing. Yeah. And he is. I would say their forward group is just solid. There's no stars, but they're better than probably we expected. Huberdow isn't amazing,

but he's contributing more than probably again, I expected. And their bottom pair defense has done way more than I ever thought. And by way more, they're actually not

a complete detriment to success for the team. Right? Like I expected nothing from them and they've just been solid. Yeah. And we talk about Miramanov and well,

is he a top for it? Well, no, he's not. But right now with how it's about the only way you can slot it. You'd love to see Anderson and Weger together. You can't right now. It's working. It's it you can't. There's enough there that like you say that there's a drop off from Weger to Miramadov and from you know, ball. But it, but it is working. All solid. Miramanov and the rest. But they're doing. Yeah. They're playing the way the coach

needs them to play to have success. Yeah. J. J. Maremanov is not a top tier. defenseman. Well, that's fine. Don't F up. Yeah, I was going to say with Miramanoff, he is what he is, but we don't see him getting burned. No, he's getting, getting torched. He's staying within. Stay in your lane. I don't notice them 90% of the time.

And I'm not even, I'm not joking at all. 90. Pinders old Miraman. I, what? Did he play? Exactly. And not in a bad way. It's, I don't expect him to be rushing the buck. and scoring and putting up points and crushing gut. Just don't know.

Yeah. And I think when it's, well, this guy used to be a forward and he's big and he scored points. That's not, that's not what it is for you on this blue line if you're going to be here. And the same with Pahal. I've seen Pahal, whenever he, you know,

he's going to take a run of a guy or get overly physical. Okay, odd man rush. Maybe it goes in or there's a big say, no, you, you can be physical. Just, just be physical in the constraints of what we need.

to be. It's really been through however many games it's been now. 16, which is not a lot. That's not quite a full season yet. It's starting like 20 games is yeah, 25% of a season. Like we're getting close to. Well, remember game one when Vancouver, whatever, they were up three nothing in a hurry. It's like, Jesus. I don't know how many people text me, but it was a handful that really. What a tire fire.

Yeah. We were ready. Oh, there could be some. shortcomings for this blue line and maybe it's going to be tough for this oh boy are they going to be given up five six a night and they've you know they've to their credit it's interesting you bring that up i hadn't really thought about that but when you're not thinking about the d you're in a good spot we talked about it all the time i think we we had zadora of last year at this point and we were loving them yeah but for all the good the bad was too right so yeah you end up kind of maybe being even pay and it's the same scenario i don't notice bahall and miramanov and tb8 and whoever else is in the lineup you're going with that yeah yeah yeah doing anything spectacular but i also don't see them

costing the team points games goals against they're just they're doing their ass yeah and again part of that's coaching so credit to the to the coaches for putting them in a spot to to kind of succeed I should mention we're in opening statements. I always, you know, we're just so excited to get talk. I forget to tell you it's opening statements for McLeod Law. In there as well, it was not in the King's game, but the word came over the weekend regarding Anthony Mantha has an ACL injury, it requires surgery, it will be a season-ending procedure.

So certainly didn't work, you know, this unfortunate for on a number of levels. Unfortunately for him, obviously this was, I'm going to suck. a contract, I'm going to go to a team where clearly it's probably not about winning, but I'm going to get some ice time, be put in position to put up some points, and then maybe in a year from now, I can get a longer term deal. That's not seen to have happened. Do you want my rude take on this? Well, I'll just, I'll lay it.

So for math, I'm going to go to Calgary. I'm going to try and put up a bunch of points. And then next summer, I'm going to get a long term bigger money deal for the flames. Okay, we're going to bring in a guy. We have wingers, but a lot of them are young. We're going to bring in a veteran guy. And with any luck, maybe he will shoot the puck, get some points, worry less about defense, just score.

And then at the trade deadline, we can turn this into an asset. I'm guessing that's maybe what was in the headspace of the team. Neither of those things are going to take place. No, and for Mantha, no good, real bad, actually. For the team, perhaps you're not going to be able to get that asset in return for him because I agree with you. I think that was probably the plan. But my ignorant take is it's best for the team.

Yeah. He's not a, we love the first game, but then you saw all the reasons why he's been on a bunch of different teams. And it's great to have talent and size and shooting and ability. And when you don't decide to play, but one in every 10, it becomes hard. I actually think this is better for the team, because you're going to put guys in there that are going to be excited and competing.

And it sounds like a cheap shot against Manta, but get these, they got some kids, let them, let them earn your stripes. And second time I've used that. But let them get in there and play. And I actually think it'll be better off for the squad. If they're going to battle and compete and try and make something of this season, it's a better fit to have him kind of out of the line. And really almost regardless, right, whether they're going to try and make the playoffs or not make

for the for the development of matt coronado specifically right it's it's it's it's it's great news for at coronados with the ranglers 80% of the season because anthony mantis here he can have a great year well next year coming to camp and that whole song and dance thing it just it kind of goes back it feels like we're really shipping on the guy now but i i was kind of curious when the signing was because all we talked about for a year was the the the excess of of wingers that they have. You have too many wingers. Now, okay, so Maghapani is gone. Well, there's still a lot of guys.

It was just about an asset. It was about trying to give a guy a spot. They had lots of cap space. Conroy was 100% going. Let's give him a it didn't make sense other than we're going to trade him after we pump up his value. Very low risk. They have cap space. It was not a huge money deal. So, I mean, yeah, it sucks for him. No doubt about it.

No doubt. What did he have for, for points here? I was looking, 13 games, four goals, three assists. Not the kind of...

Not terrible. I mean, it's not terrible. Like seven and 13, 50, not what's going to get you a significant return at the deadline,

for sure, even if those, you know, if that kind of rate of play continues. But yeah, hey, we go to shit in the guy.

Adam Klapker recalled, they did the, the Dryden Hunt swap. over the weekend. But again, between this and Coronado's play, this really bodes well, I would think, for Coronado to be here for the balance of the season. Yeah, it looks that way.

And he's earning it. So they're, yeah, keep it up, kid is what you tell them. Keep it up, kid. Keep it up, kid. Not the game tonight, Vancouver. Oh, they're on the road again. Yeah. That's right.

Willie. And Vancouver's been terrible at home, right? Well, Vancouver, you know, it's a weird one with with them. What are the points for your butt? I don't need you to go and crush the guy again, necessarily. But Elias Pedersen just seems like there. The day, didn't it? What's that?

Didn't he score a big goal the other day? I thought he'd celebrate the goal. Elias in 13 games has three goals and seven points. That's not, that's very mantel like. Yeah. So that's good. No. Oh, not for them.

Oh. I just want to like I've just, I'm double checking again. Can that be right? Three goals and seven points in 13 games. Yeah. It's, they're not happy about it in Vancouver,

but it almost feels like they're so used to it that, uh, well, whatever. But what about J.T. Miller. Now J.T. Miller's kind of getting shit on. He's going to get the gears because. Yeah.

Yeah, because, well, J.T. Miller, do you realize that last year at this time? He had nine, he's nine points off his start from a year ago. He's got 11 points in 13 games. Okay. Well, it's, yeah. But last year, you know what he was doing? He's injured. That is without saying he's injured. He's basically said he's injured.

I'm being as physical as I can, given the situation. situation. The points aren't there given the situation. All of this. So it's just interesting that it feels like J.T. Miller showed what he's capable of doing, carried that team for good chunks of last year and was great in the playoffs. emotionally led them. Well, Petterson wasn't. And like, maybe it is. Maybe I'm wrong about this. But it just feels like, well, of course, Pedersen's stinking because he stinks for long stretches. And certainly at the start of the year, you can't expect them to be any good. But what about J.T. Miller? All right. So Pedersen struggling. J.T. Miller is injured. Brock Besser is out after he got cabonged by Tanner Genoa there last week. He's out indefinitely.

So we'll see what happens against the Canucks. They lost to Edmonton, 7.3. It was a bit of floodgate. So they have about a five minute span there where they scored four or five goals. Prior to that, though, Canucks were on the road. They'd won three straight. Come home. First game after home.

After a road trip, they lose. Game two of a six-game home stand for the Connucson. starting tonight. And I know you love young talent. Jonathan Lecira Mackey. I'm not sure if that's how you say his name. Lecura Mackey, 20 years old, had five goals and seven games

with Abbisford. We saw him in Penticton. They're very high on him. Looks like he will play tonight. Believe it to be his NHL debut. Nice. Practice with Pius, Souter, and J.T. Miller. He'll be spinning around all by himself. That's right.

That's right. So he's going to jump in. Kevin Lankanin's been very good for them in net. Arturz Seelovs had a bit of a rough start. Lankinen who came in late because they kind of keeping an eye on old Thatcher Dempco there. In for the loss against them until the other night. That was his first regulation loss of the season, 7-1 and 2 in the Connuck crease. They're a confusing team though, right?

and something has happened over the course of the weekend where i don't know if it's a zamboni issue or something, but the ice times have been pushed back and pushed back. And it's been an issue because games that are starting a half hour late. They're starting 45 minutes late. So this is just in the organizers and the people that are running to think this has been a steady kind of point of stress over the course of the weekend. So as it turns out again, Sunday, the game was supposed to start at noon, starting at 1245. And then there's more games in a different tournament. All right, 1245. That's fine. So we play the game. It is tied. at the end of regulation.

Well, we're going to a shootout. All right. They do three shooters, each, still tied. And I don't know, I'm not a coach. I'm just a parent standing on the side. And then all of a sudden, it's shooter, shooter, shooter, shooter, shooter, shooter, shooter, shooter. It was, and I find out afterwards in the, they're going, because I see the coach is doing this on the bench trying to figure out what the shootout rules are.

as kid, kid, kid, every player on the team had to go and shoot. Never seen this before. Never seen it. Well, it's fair play, Dean. They get to the end of the entire team by now, this, and this is taking a long time because they're stopping. Okay, what are the rules? Well, who needs to go?

What are we doing? The shootout has now taken as long as it would have taken just play another period. Anyway, so they get to the end of the everybody shoots, shootout. It's still tied. The organizer and I saw her standing at the at the Zamboni gate because now it's stressful. There's two of more teams waiting to go on the ice. Snapping.

She's that she's she looks at the referee and just does this. Game over. It's tied. Home team wins. Yay! One team goes skating out, celebrating everyone's what has happened? What has happened?

So if you were on your forehand, you pull backhand and lift it. No goal. So you have to come in and shoot in one motion only. Oh boy. So you can't deek or something. So that was the other thing that was confusing is how many kids are shooting? All right. Goal. No goal. All right. Goal. Nope. No goal. More kids shooting. Seven. It's round seven. It's round seven, round eight, round 10, round 12. I don't, I don't know. what's happening. I'm just going to wait for the refs to

wait for the Zamboni to start cleaning the ice and we'll find out who won. So, anyway, good times. Speaking of refs, I had a ref tell me that I, so we had a face off in our end and they kicked our centerman out.

Okay, whatever. I don't know what the infatuation and focal point these refs have with the right, the two inches inside. Anyway. kick our guy out. And so the linesman decides he gets to choose who takes the face off. So he throws a defenseman in.

So I asked him in between periods. I said, how come like what? Well, I can choose whoever I want. No. No, you can't. It's not a rule. Well, if you don't know how to coach, it's not my fault. Yeah.

And it's the city's sports fan base. And I think it's awesome. So happy for them for sure.
