How are we doing, man? How are we, how are we doing today? All of us back together again. Feels good. It's been a few days. It's been since Wednesday since we had a normal show, to be honest. We traveled Thursday. Boom and I were poolside Friday as Red traveled. Boom was basking in the sports book Sunday, Monday, traveling. We're back. Yeah. Yeah. Here we are. Busy week.

It is a, you know, it's a busy time. Times are busy. Yeah. It sucks to have missed all the really cold temperatures. here though. Yeah, that's a shame. Yeah. I'm curious about it actually, Dean, if you don't mind me jumping in. Would it change your existence at all if it was minus 40? Like, he did have to transfer from the airport to his house. So there is that 10 steps between the airport and taxi and then, you know, what I do. What tends to happen is when it's called. I really hunker down, you know, that's an stay inside. Yeah. Really kind of limit my activity. Boy, it's been a cold decade here.

Yeah, the outdoor, the outdoor runs and stuff. Man about town stuff, just, yeah, sorry, can't do it. Yeah. Now, here we, mood and spirits are high. We're happy to see each other. get into the show. No, we're not canceled yet. Oh, no. Thank God for the internet. No, well, you had the update just moments ago regarding the Calgary Flames. Dustin Wolf has been recalled. Jacob March from his day to day with a lower body injury. He left practice yesterday before the end.

They called it maintenance. It appears to be more than maintenance. Maintaining an injury. Hopefully a short-term one. I'm trying to remember which game it was when I believe, I'll have to go back. Ottawa? Tweaky, tweaky? Yeah, because remember when Millen was talking about it,

he kind of fell, he was going backwards and kind of turn it. It looked like he maybe tweaked a little. I mean, we're really kind of looking for something now. Yeah. Well, day of days, all that really matters. I mean, when it occurred or how much he played through it, I suppose is a talking point, but the fact that it's not week to week or longer is, okay, you got a six game homestand, you got the All-Star break.

You hope you see Jacob before all that. I would caution, though, that it just happened today. Am I correct? Or yesterday? Yes, skate yesterday, I believe. Has he been even properly examined? So he was at practice? He was at practice left.

Left. And then they're like, oh, no, he left early for maintenance. But clearly it was more than that. And I'm not saying there were a bunch of liars or anything. It may have looked like one thing. And they're like, oh, shoot, there's more here than we thought. I don't think there's any evil here. That's what I'm getting at.

Yeah. It's good that it's day to day. It's much better than month to month. That's what I've been told. Until it changes from day to day. But you know how those things come about is they start in days. Is that right? And days turn into weeks. See, I thought if you like broke a leg, it would start at months. And you would work the week and your days away and then you play.

But until you're on the old x-ray table, it's like, ooh, that bone's sticking out. That looks like you might be day to day. So if Jacob has a bone sticking out, it could get worse as well. what I'm hearing. This is some of the, your leg is not supposed to turn like that. Heavy on medical information.

Yeah, we're going to have to keep you out a couple days at least to see, uh, see what's happened. Let the swelling go down. No, that's crappy for him because he's been playing some of the finest hockey we've seen. I know you guys were talking about it.

It's, we're still in that. What are you, what are you rooting for? Are you? Yeah. Because you're still, you're still some teams ahead of you.

If you're looking at the wild card race and now you've played well enough that you've kind of dissent yourself from the, Anyway, we should have known better, I guess, in the end. It's very flamesy. They're kind of right there. Nothing comes easy. Okay. So who's playing?

Like, are you more excited? Again, we're back to that situation. Are you going to see Wolf or Vladar? I would suggest we might see more of Wolf for the amount of time that Markstrom's gone. But I think it's Vladar tonight just for the quick change of scenery. It's been a while since we saw Vladar started. if I'm correct. So I think it's Vladdy here, but I don't know it's going to be tough to play him at this point. He's on a tough go. It is a tough goal. Six, five and two record wise.

Which isn't bad. Goals against more than half the games. Yeah. It's a 3.42 and an 883 save percentage. That's a hoof right there, Dino. It's a hoof and a goosh, whichever, I mean, take your pick. Yeah. I was thinking about it just this morning when you go, you know, shit kind of going through your head. You're thinking about it. It's like, this should just be about the time. It was a couple weeks ago. Remember when we're going to trade Vlodar?

You've got to give Vlodar a run. They've got to get Vlodar in there and let him go for a little bit. And then Markstrom starts playing so well. It's like, this Markstrom's great. You don't even think about Vlodar for two weeks. And then it's like, well, Markstrom's been playing a lot of hockey. He's about just about time to give him a bit of a rest. So this is not the way you want to give him a rest.

It is funny. The Flames Nation's morning. Someone had written an article that was like, How should the flames utilize our goalies on the six-game homestand? And I'm sure part of that was they probably should ease out on Marky, as good as he's going and get Dan Bladar in there. Well, here we are. Yeah.

Because like you said, in there as well, you include the All-Star Break. Yeah. You can kind of, there's, you can manipulate things a little bit, but it's a metro. This is not how we wanted to start the show or the homestand here. It could be. It's just an opportunity for someone else to show how good they are. They're 10 days, between games when they get to the end of this homestand

starting up after the All-Star break, which is rammed with their CBA seven-day break or whatever. There's a big stretch there. We'll see. Yeah. He's really good. Markstrom has been really good. Like get some Vesna votes good.

Not like when it necessarily, but. And, Rhett, you hate, we know you hate Jacob Markstrom. And even for you, you've been impressed. Yeah, no, I've never hated Jacob Baxter. I hate that he's helping the team have success. That's right. And they're wasting a Vesna.

You can't have guys trying to win games. I mean, what kind of culture are you building here? What are we doing? What are we doing, fellas? Come on. Yeah. Listen, I love any goaltender that's good because it makes a D-Men money.

And it's a good thing. Yeah, rats, that's, uh, we talk about it all the time. If there's anyone, There are life preservers. There's nothing quite like a goalie in this sport. It will save you and bring you things you have no business getting. And if there's anyone who can speak from experience, you would be one of those guys, retro.

Yep, I lived it. You sure did. Three great ones. Front row seat to all of it, for sure. And I made sure they had to earn it. I wasn't going to let it just float through a game. Yeah, that's right. How much money did you cost Roman Ture when you threw Mike Greer into him?

Yeah, well, he already signed. I mean, you had to save the franchise. I get it. He already had his big deal. He got paid his dogs. He was being overpaid already. Now, because now Van Biesbrook, he won a Vesna, but I believe he was a ranger at the time. That was very early in his career.

You didn't win a Vesna with the Panthers? He just played really well. He came over an expansion, didn't he? Because they had Richter and Van Bysbroke. Is that right? They had both. Was it expansion? Yeah.

Yeah. Awful mask. Really? That mask was a car. It's an era. For an era, though. Like, if you go and look at the housing decor of the midnight, it's different too.

You might frown on that as well. Fashion is a circle, Rhett. At this point, that mask doesn't look good. In 10 years, we'll be fawning for more of it. Oh, yeah. Like the hotel we stayed at in Scottsdale. A nice little throwback to the 90s as far as decor was concerned. Anyway, did we all have fun?

Did we have a good time on the trip? Yeah. If you didn't have fun, I'm worried about you. I gave Ryan Pinder total prop. for picking the spot and setting it up. I wasn't convinced going in. You weren't totally convinced. Yeah.

That's a fun place. I don't know how long it's going to last, fellas. The PA, the owners, Gary, like they can't be loving the revenue there, but for fans, phenomenal. It's great for the fans. And it does make you wonder if this is the preferred alternative, how much money were they losing in Glendale?

Like, how bad? Yeah, I don't think it's preferred. What are their options that they have? They basically got evicted for not. No, I just mean. As can, whether you stay in, yeah, stay in Glendale or go there. But you're right. How it's millions a day.

It's got to be that they're losing with this, with this team in that rink. People, oh, it's like Max Bell. Yeah. Yeah. A new Max Bell. It's very Max Bellish. If you've been there, then you know what we're looking at here. But if you don't give a crap about how much money the owners of Gary's losing,

fill your boots. It's a hell of a good time. It is all that. That is absolutely. correct. And, you know, it's one of those things where the time is really ticking. If they can get an arena deal done for North Scottsdale, they'll stay in Mollett for a while. If that thing starts to stall and they can't get the land or something gets shot down, like they're really running out of time. They're just going to move this team to Salt Lake or Atlanta or Houston or something like that. And then they'll just come back in 15 years when there is a proper setup and a not shitty owner there that people want to do business with. You get to that point because the first thing that goes through my head is if they've come this, and the miles and the losses that they've logged on this thing. But I guess if you don't get an owner, then you just, at the end of the day, that's it. I still feel like if they had a rink in the right part of town, totally.

It could work. The latest proposed one is the best location that I've seen proposed yet. And I don't know a ton about Phoenix, but talking with Commodore and some people that we were down there. Like, it is north of Scottsdale. It is on a freeway that is not congested all the time. it would be easy access from Scottsdale and that's the only thing you want in Phoenix.

That's where all the money is and that's where you're going to have success is if you can get people in Scottsdale going to the games. They put it in spots that's been very difficult for people in Scottsdale with the Glendale rank. You can have success if you're near Scottsdale. That's my thought on the Phoenix area. Are you, now are you saying that my Commodore is your insider?

This is your... With many ours. I've spoke to Commodore. No, I said, what's this location? Talk to me. Phoenix. Like they brought there were some pictures of the site. It's empty desert. I was just like, where is this? Does this make sense? Like, you know what? This actually makes a ton of sense. I would go to games. It's probably only 10 to 20 minutes from Scottsdale. This isn't a 40 minute

hike across town to Glendale. He thought it was a great idea. And I'm like, okay, well, he knows more about Phoenix than anyone else in my Rolodex. He likes it. Location be real good. But now do they have the worthwhile to get it built? Because finding land is one thing. That's a very small step. A flame's had land earmarked for decades here, right? Not a shot against you, but maybe find some more Scottsdale sources for your Rolodex. Yeah, it was working on.

The Commodore is at the top of that, you know, I'm just. We were working on. Love you, Mike. So the, uh, the coyotes, uh, it's a coyote game day here, uh, with the flames tonight. They're back. Put your helmets on. It feels like they just played each other.

Like just a couple games ago. It feels like they were just. taking on. Oh, yes, 6-2 on Thursday. The flames are on a nice little heater. Now, did they send the dad's home, or did they convince some of them to hang around? I bet they convinced them all to stay, but I don't know if they listened. Fellas, what are you got to do? I was joking. They should have unveiled the dad's six-game homestand.

Like, let's go, first in league history. Let's go. Let's go. Two more weeks with the dads. Already they're being punished. Karma's got them. Marks from her. Yeah, I hear you. They, I looked at the, I just kind of got, I went through the game notes this morning. It just was looking at the schedule and all that. And at the start of the year and up until not that long ago, I know you guys had Weamer on and he was on in the summers. Where are the goals going to come from?

It was, yes, that's the number one, one of the main things anyway, if not the number one thing. Where is this offense going to come from? And offense has not been an issue. They've scored three or more in seven of their last eight. there's been some fours in there, some sixes, a seven. The last month or so, we haven't talked once about the offense. It's been, we've talked about the offense, but we're startled at how much of it there is. What are we seeing right now?

I hear. muted, uh, muted, buddy. I said the last month or so, we've seen damn good hockey. Yeah. Yeah. If you've watched the, if you turn the flames on at the start of December, And paid attention, you're thinking, this team, they're as good as there is out there. Like, they've beat a lot of really good teams.

They've had a tough schedule. And aside from that stupid Chicago game, they've played competitive, hard, aggressive hockey. Like, goaltending has been awesome. They're scoring goals. Maybe they're almost due because the goaltending, or pardon me, the goal scoring was so shitty for so long. But there's not a lot to whine and complain about with the squad right now. When you look at any team's winning streak, there's usually two ingredients. Good goaltending and a high shooting percentage.

They're on a PDO heater right now, and that's not like to take anything away from them. They're scoring at a rate they won't be able to sustain, and they're getting like 930 goaltending, which they won't be able to sustain. But they're playing really good hockey. They're playing with pace. They're in every single game. They're just Lady Luxman with them for a bit here. I was in Vegas for that game, as you guys talked about,

on Saturday. And yeah, they win it. And yes, Vegas is without Eichol, and they were without William Carlson. And there's some holes in that lineup right now. But watch the flames move the puck. They look so much more confident than they have at any point this season. And don't go too far with it, fellows.

But little no look backhand passes, back to the point, little things. They're just, they're feeling it at all. ends of the ice right now. To watch them in the offensive zone go to work in Vegas. I sent Pinder a text. Retro, we've been there a couple of times. This was my third time. And

everyone, how's great as the atmosphere in Vegas? It is great. Saturday, it was any other NHL rank because the flames scored early and then they scored again and they were so much the better team. It was a quiet rank for the final 40 minutes. And that's pretty rare there. Yeah. There was no life.

You've done some work to do that, especially with the flames. They've struggled there forever. It's more, I just kind of remarking that the flames haven't played well. I think that's their second win ever there. This was, this was convincing. They have won some convincing games. I don't give a shit where it is. They've played good hockey.

And I just, it still leaves you in that confusing, confounded spot of what the hell? Are we going to do here? They're too close to abandon. And now you're kind of talking. about doing both things, aren't you right? Well, maybe we resigned this guy, but trade this guy. Maybe we take the picks from this trade and give you some other eyes. It's like now you're, you're really trying to serve two masters here.

Yeah. And the other thing that I noticed, I think it, and we talked about again yesterday, but boom, you were there watching. Yes, they're making those plays and they look light. And by light, I mean, light, they're on the ice. They're having fun. Things are loose and enjoyable for that team. There's no weight on their back.

They're not being dragged down. They're not stressed out. They are going to the rink, pumped up to be there, high-fiving and things are good. And these are, these, typically January is a very difficult month. It can be a bit of a drag, you know. It is cold. It is miserable.

There's storms all over. It's that time of year where you still got a ton of games left. The end isn't really in sight. You've got to be a professional and show up. They're into it. they are loving things right now. They're loving the room. They're playing the games and they're having a ton of fun.

And it's hard to describe it because you're just seeing it. But it does look like a tangible thing almost. I agree. I said this to Ryan on Friday and it sounds like you're getting old. Flames fans of this. But it does feel like the kids get into the lineup. They can play well or if they make mistakes, it doesn't feel like they're getting hammered on.

The veterans are playing. it feels like in a way there's you're starting to build a foundation of culture of some sort the room everything's kind of here's here's what it can be to play in calgary and to be a flame and that had to change for sure now it helps yes that they've been winning because win a shit it lots of things are fun when you're winning hockey go through a three or four game skid and we'll see just how light they are but i agree with you right that that was just watching them make try to make plays and make making them and recovering and covering for one another. I've not seen that. And you talk about January. I hadn't thought about it, but I looked this morning. The Flames had five wins in December and have five already in January with six games left.

They like, they like them some 2024. They're also not going to play for a significant of good chunk as they get into the All-Star break. Yeah. But it's to your point, Ryan, I think we are kind of seeing everything's going right.

Yeah. Yeah, they're not going to win all the close games. But yeah, it's been a really nice run where they haven't faced a ton of adversity. Look, Markstrom's dinged up here. This might be exactly what derails a hot run. We'll see. Yeah.

Because he, as good as they've been, there have been nights where just okay, goaltending could have pulled the plug on them. Even Vladar, if he was in in Vegas, I wonder. you know what I mean like Vegas did have a push in that second period I thought and Markstrom just didn't let them get back in the game. Maybe it's third. I'm trying to remember what there's a mental part of that too. But you know Markstrom's going in and there's a it does trickle down throughout the rest of the squad not that they're got the hot goalie right?

The hot goalie you trust it. It's easy. Vladar goes in not that you're like oh shit he can't stop a puck but it's a different mental makeup. It can get a little tighter for guys when the back. up goes in instead of a guy that's best in the caliber. Like it does make a difference. So we'll,

I guess we're going to find out because day to day for Jacob Markstrom. Yeah. And the Yotes did not do a lot of things well on Thursday. They will be certainly looking to play better. And I think they bounce back with a big win two nights later. Yeah. Didn't they thump Minnesota or something like that? Like this, we'll see a better Arizona club tonight as well.

Um, just for what it's worth, I reached out as soon as we saw the news, uh, sounds like tweet something in practice. So that's what it was. It was nothing coming, uh, coming in a little something in practice. And as you can imagine, they're being very careful. Yeah. So get off the ice. Don't play. Uh, sounds like over careful might be the, uh, the story here.

So you hope that's the case. You hope it's nothing major and that they're just going to give him. And you get rested Markstrom coming in on another heater. That's right. And then you go on another heater. And then you fire up the dads. Hey, boys. Let's come on back.

Let's go. I'm sure we got some road trips here. We can go on. Anyway, that's kind of the flame story here on a flames game day, Arizona. Tonight we have got Afterburner with Pinder and myself. Yeah, that's right. You'll band back together. Let's say, seeing the mullet now just in,

So now we've got the Jasper Pond Hockey tournament this weekend. You're obviously keeping it for that. Yeah. Any plans beyond the weekend? You know, Dean, I'm kind of like you guys. I haven't got to that anything beyond the weekend in my calendar yet. Don't, don't play it. day just like marquee.

We're going to be really, really cautious with this. It might not be his choice, Dean. I'm guessing at some point somebody's going to step in and take control of the situation. There's been threats levied already. It's a nuclear winter over here. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I hear you. Ah, you know what?

This weekend, if you want to see it, you can come out to Jasper's. The Jasper pond hockey tournament. It is a classic. We are heading up at the tournament. be held at the Fairmont, Jasper Park Lodge, games on beautiful Lake Mildred. Mildred. Hello, Mildred. Of course, the flames and the Oilers are playing one another in the National Hockey League on Saturday.

We're going to do the, we'll do the pond hockey, and then come in and take a look at that on the old big screen and have some chuckles and guffaws with the, the Euler boys. It was still a big supporter, although I did flip out at the end of the half. I did see in the group chat that the Bill's coach had ruined it in the first half. The Bill's coach blew it. And then I was, they were a check on this score because this thing looked over. Yeah, but they had two and a half minutes, no reason to give Pittsburgh the ball back even to give them a chance to score. They throw the ball instead of running it. And they had tons of success running the ball.

It wasn't anyway. They don't chew up any clock. And then they F up a kick. And next thing, you know, it's they're within 14. and then they get it within seven. It's all the coaches. They give Pittsburgh momentum. Dumb.

Even with that momentum, Jack. 10. Too many. Nope. It's not enough. He's just a little somber tonight. Did you think there was a chance, Jack? Were you getting excited for a while?

When they cut up to seven, I thought maybe. But I talked to Ryan after the show yesterday. There we go. And I said, the only way they can win this game is they run the ball, time of possession, and they can't get into a shootout. And then I blinked and it was 21-0.

And then they were screwed. Yeah. Well, I'm sorry, Jack, you've had a, it's been a roller coaster for you. It has been. So do they have a franchise quarterback or a high pick? Let's not get into these questions. Which one is no, neither. Okay, shoot.

It takes some time just to. That's smart, Jack. Now is not the time. He needs a contract. He's only got a year left. I don't know. I have no idea. There's a lot of questions.

You don't want to be making decisions right now. It's raw. What do they call it, that 24-hour cool off window or something like that? 24-hour rule. 24-hour rule. That's a jack- At least. At least.

It showed up to shovel and make that game possible. That's right. Parts of the stadium were indeed clear. of snow. It was a disaster. Oh my God. As I said to Ryan, but for whatever you do, don't put a roof on your new stadium. Yeah, we did fun. We don't do it too. Don't do it. It's like, this happens every year and they're like, oh my goodness, we need you, the public to grab your shovels and help us. We'll pay you out of pocket.

20 bucks and our come down shovel for free. That's what brings a community together. It's not community spirit. You got the state of New York over a barrel giving you a bill. million dollars you don't want to put a roof on that thing? A roof partial roof. Retractable. So yeah, if you want to move back or whatever, right? I'm sure they could find a way to do that. So, uh, so we're set for now, are we excited for now next weekend?

I think that's fair to say. I think that much of it has been earned. I think he has looked disinterested or whatever.

Are you seeing a change? Are you seeing a little bit more to him as of late? Because the points aren't there to the extent, like Sharon Govich has been on a real tear. Sorry, we talked about Hubert O and Sharon Govich just had all the goals. He hasn't had that big offensive clip to the same extent. He's had some points, obviously. But are you seeing a bit of a change in him?

or is it kind of status quo? I think it's probably a better attitude, but everyone's having more fun. So he's, you're going to get dragged into it as well, even if, but I think for me personally, my opinion on,

on Lindholm is just, it's been confirmed more than anything. He's not a number one, take over a game, drive, shift after shift, dominate kind of player. He's a real good two-way centerman.

I agree entirely. I think, that's what we've learned this year. Yeah. Can he score? Well, if he's got great playmakers around, I'm sure. Yeah. He's going to defend.

He's going to play all special teams. He's a great player at everything. I shouldn't say. He's a very good player at everything, probably great at nothing in a sense. You know what I mean? I talk a lot about, for defensemen,

there's certain guys you just mesh with that it's easy. You didn't have to, like Jay McKee was always an example for me that I use. I think Lindholm would be that guy if you were forward. If you're playing with him, it's probably really easy to play with. Yeah.

He's smart. He does the right things. Works the right way. Right? Like he would just be really easy to play with. But he's not a clear cut number one offensive producing guy. No. I'm just thinking if you're lining up centers in the West,

like there's not a team in the playoffs. I don't think that you'd be like, uh, Lindholm's better. in that center and if it was their number one guys and that feels like a shot at him. But I do think you could line them up against a lot of the second line centers and be like, hmm, I agree.

Miscast here in a way, right? Yeah, I agree 100%. Is he miscast? It's just the way it is. He's, you're the best chairman, right? That's what it's going to be. And, you know, is it fair to compare him to some of the other guys? Probably not, but that's the thing.

He wants to be paid like some of those other guys. So it's him who, in a way asking he's going to draw that comparison when you're what if nine million okay well let's see what nine million gets you down the middle in the west and he just isn't the flames will miss him dearly i think when he is gone and depending on how they replace him because he does do he's a good he's a very good player he plays minutes he wins draws but penalty the whole thing um but he's not worth that kind of money and

that's just ultimately if you want to be in that pay, if you want to be in that pay group in that pay structure, then your game needs to kind of dictate that. It doesn't. It's word out, sorry I'm jumping in front of you there, but it's word out to his agent and to himself

that you should reevaluate what you're going after because other teams have to be watching this and agents aren't stupid. but they're going to be talking to other teams that would be interested in having him next year, sign as a free agent, whether they're allowed to or not, I don't care about, I'm not naive. Is word going to get back to him that, hey, yeah, we'd love to have you, but your request,

we can't meet it as well. As crazy as, yeah, as crazy as July 1 gets, it's not nine, north of nine, seven years versus 8, you know, like, that's getting hurt even more. You just can't give full term and free agency. Like you can't if you're staying with your team. But I don't think like they're disillusioned to what happens. Like they see the games too. He's not on a 40 goal pace.

He scored 40 the other year. He's floored with 100 points a few years ago. He's nowhere near that. Like no, they understand. And the ask the season before is like, well, okay, you want to lock us up. If we had a career year, what would that be worth? And I think they kind of got in the right neighborhood.

It's just not anything close to career year because the talent around him hasn't been anywhere near what Chuck and Goddrow provided him two years ago, which was, probably will be the career year for him. Yeah, and if you know, the agent can argue that, but if you're at GM, I don't give a shit who you're playing with. Your job's to, you want to make that much. You drive the bus. Yeah.

And look, we'd all want to make more money, but I don't think he's expecting to get that. He could have this summer. But if he's, like, it would be silly to not adjust your expectations when you've played half a season and the results are clear as day. He's a great secondary piece. He's not a number one center.

They know that. And is it actually two years? because he wasn't that good last year. Yeah, no, last year was just okay. But last year we kind of wrote off to like the whole thing was a cluster bleep. Yeah, this is functional team. You can, but he's part of the reason it was a cluster bleep because he didn't play. It's two years of, I'm just an okay.

And that's why I don't think the agent's still asking for the same number. It would be ridiculous. You're just going to get laughed at. Yeah, because I do. I feel like his play has turned around a little bit. And you're kind of seeing now what, Elias, because he's got some guys, they're not elite level, but they're playing

very good. They're playing very well, is what I should say. Sharon Govich is scoring. Hubert O's been better. They're a very good line right now. There seems to be some chemistry there where there hasn't been in the past. And what is this, you know, what is present

day Elias Lindholmworth? And I don't know that the flames and he come back to the table. We've talked about Hanofen. Is there any situation, if you're you're Craig Conroy retro if your phone rings and it's Lindholm's agent. He says, hey, you know what? The mood is different.

The winds have been more plentiful than the losses. Would you, what, if we were going to start over and look at Lindholm's thing in Calgary long term, would you have interest? Well, it goes back to everything. I were playing chess or checkers. If it's checkers, then I'm absolutely talking to them. But if it's chess, I need to know what the offers are in return. before I do that.

You don't play six a year. We'll have you forever. That's just not realistic though, right? Now, to simplify it, it's going to be crazy, but I'm saying yes, and I'm basing it off of a month or just over a month of play that this team,

when you start the season, the way you start, you earn that criticism and you earn what goes with it. You get shit on. When you play as well as they have, Since then, you earned that as well. But you've given me the, they don't give a shit about me,

but you've given the coach, the GM, the organization, the fans, the media, everyone that watches this team, you've given them a reason to believe in you. And you now have to reevaluate. It's not October when this is bullshit. These guys aren't even shown up and trying. These guys, like, shoot them to the moon, get rid of them for nothing. No, they've played good hockey and they've beat good teams and they're battling to get into a playoff spot. And then a goalie that's playing Vesna caliber hockey.

Do you piss it out the window? Is it a bad plan to sell guys? No. But you can also keep them and you're going to take a run at it. I don't know how you add to the squad. I still think that down the road you're going to end up. I don't see a clear path to success other than Markstrom playing his ass off. but you've played well enough,

we should at least consider it. Anyway, I think at the end of the day, you regret, if you don't do anything, it's fine, but you'll still regret it. Because what you're not going to do is give yourself an opportunity to pick up that difference-making superstar. You know what I mean? Overly, highly, highly talented pivot up the middle or winger,

or, you know, I think you're going to be monkeying around trying to get put the pieces together for from years to come if you don't go and get that piece that that high level elite elite talent yeah i i just think keeping him around makes it harder to find a number one center because he's proven he isn't um to your point and then secondly i just feel like he's earned the right to say you know what i want to try something somewhere else yeah oh absolutely i just wonder so if if the determination is he's a very he's a second line center it's almost like the Franklin thing. Second,

I'd be very good third line center. What is the going rate for a really good second line center in the NHL? Oh, I'd be happy to pay him seven a year. I don't,

he'll ask for more. I think he'll get more. But like you, you can go look at like Bo Horvett. He was, he'd rather pay J.T. Miller and certainly rather pay Elias Pedersen,

understandably so. But he went over and he got big bucks. You can look at Mark Schifley. There's another, okay, great if he's your second center, right? Like,

there's a, market for those guys. So I just want to, I just want to jump in. I just want to jump in. So if, if the ask was nine and if we kind of agree, well,

they'd have to back off of that. Yeah. And you're okay at seven. Yeah. Well, just on an eight year deal. Ask yourself this. Who's better? Him or Cadry?

Right now, well, well, just, Cadry's been on, you would rather have for the next seven years or six years is left on Caddry. You'd rather have Linhol. But. you're already committed to

Caudry. It's collecting the number of these guys that's the issue. It's not committing to Lindholm. It's the issue. It's that it's another guy that's going to be into his mid-30s and you're getting some back nine with, right? If you don't have Codry locked up and you, then I'm like, yes, you need a number two-send. I'm not, I'm not talking about, I'm not talking about lineups. I'm talking about

money, what Lindholm's going to look for. And it all comes together. I get it. But if Lindholm's looking for nine and I can look at Codry and go, he's making seven and a half and he's more impactful on a game to game basis. Why would I pay you? Like, isn't that the number you should be at? Codry's older when he hit free agency,

then Lindholm will be. And he never had the high ceiling offensively that Lindholm flashed with stars. So I think he'll get more than Codry and free agency this summer. But it's not a bad starting point. Like if Codry's seven times seven, well then we'll ask for eight and a half. half time seven yeah i because i i'm curious how this one will go and i don't i i really do think he's still a trade candidate more than a re-signed for sure he has to want to be here right

like that's the other thing that we haven't talked about a lot that's the main thing sorry boom and you're going to make a point but we talk we we've talked about before yesterday we touched on it i think the flames are now in a position where they can move them and fill that spot they have a cadre they have a backland you're not you might not get a watch as far as a player as good as Lindholm, but you're going to get something. And you can do two things at once. You can move Lindholm and still make the playoffs.

Because Lindholm is not the one driving the bus, getting you to the playoff line. It's a lot of minutes, but they do have guys that can step in. At center, it's going to be tough. But let's say you get a third line center back and a pick in that deal. Yeah. Your top two centers are Cadrey Backland.

The way they're playing this year, it's like, okay, you're not going to wow. anyone, but it's very, they're good players. You've got a Coronado and a Peltier waiting in the wings. You, you've mixed those guys in, slide someone else to the middle. I mean, there's, if they could do both those things, it would be quite impressive.

But again, we're, we're in Mucky Middelland here, guys. Look what we're talking about here. Yes, but that's why if you're going to be in Mucky Middelland, you better push your ass to get the playoffs. Yeah. There's no, like, if you're going to write it out, you're not going to dump guys. Like, if you're, if you don't want to be

Mucky Middle, then you should be selling right now because all you're doing by pro i get that you want to maximize your return but you're also effing yourself up for your picks if you if you keep these guys and remain money mucky middle and then so maybe you get better picks but your picks going to be shittier because you've got more points in the bank like it you're kind of fighting yourself as well yeah yeah totally all this stuff is mushy middle stuff man and the way they treat markstrom here might be a little bit telling like I get the sense that if he's ready to go, they might still give it a game or two.

And if you really want to see what internally they believe, like I still think they want to be like, bump the brakes a bit. Like let's not get too excited about maybe being eighth in the West and having to go on the road as a wild card against the team that's much better than us. If you're going to do it, this is your year though. I'll argue the other side just to argue it.

You've got a goaltender that can win you a series. Yep. You don't always have that option. Alibuck and who else has been better than Markstrom this year? Because I'm a short list. The first thing that went into my head was that Dallas series and how good he was. Then the next series, he was not very good. But you're right.

And then conversely, other teams have to be feeling the same way. If our window to win is small and if this guy might be available, don't wait for Conroy to start the auction. let's go in there and let's blow his socks off. Yeah. That's why I'm surprised. Yeah. I'm a little surprised that hasn't happened or maybe it has and Conroy is not

biting. Like if I may and it always goes to Toronto because they've got the most money and I feel like they're 100% win now mode. Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe they're right. But you're going after Tannav and Marks from right now. Yeah. Right now.

and if you like and if i'm true living i'm going for it we thought he went for it last i think he did i think he threw everything into it last year well the leaves were in a better spot to have long or are in a better spot to have short-term success this year than the flames were in last year if i'm sure living and i i went for it before last year with the flames i would be going all in on leaps Yeah, they've got one year left on that Marner deal. I'd be stunned if they don't have a gole and a defenseman at minimum. And we saw them last year. They added yarn croak.

They added McCabe. They added another body. I'm trying to remember. They're going to move young assets to get players to help. They're absolutely in win now. I wonder if he's true living if he's kicking himself a little bit, going back to the Zadorov thing, even to have him at this point. Didn't have

a space, man. If you're going to eat money on it, this is what you're looking at. So you do something else, right? You get creative you find a way to do it teams seem to a lot of times find those ways yeah wasn't he wasn't an eight million dollar he wasn't an eight million dollar guy uh i just wonder you look where they're at now goal tendings an issue defense is an issue and there's a guy wherever you want to rank them but that was a tradable asset that was a guy on the blue line i was moved yeah they'll they'll add d at the down i i really believe that yes they could

have gotten zedorov they're waiting for something that fits better financially for them. And the closer they get to the deadline, the more space there is around the league, the more people that can be a bank and eat some money for you, the more established prices become for doing that, for the players.

Like, they'll do things. Another question. I think I don't, I think I know where Rhett will go on this. But we know that Friedman on Saturday was talked about Markstrom. And everybody's kind of, we saw Kevin Weeks do his thing on Twitter.

So was it Markstrom, Markstrom is kind of in that rumor mill right now. Whether there's any reason for it to be other than his good play, who's to say? But Elliot on Saturday, and I know online, I think he was on his podcast or whatever it was, I just see it online, that the flames have not gone to Markstrom, they won't go to Markstrom, they want to be delicate, they don't want to talk to him and talk about this. Is it really that delicate a situation? Are the relationships so tenuous that you risk, you know, spoil, you know, spoil?

a good thing by just saying, hey, what, what do you want to do long term? What's, what are you thinking? I would think that if you're a GM of a team, you should have a better relationship with people. Right? Right. Well, I just think you do it at the deadline, guys.

Like, he's playing the best hockey of his career. You want to go plant that between his ears? I would have done it months ago, though. I wouldn't have been waiting until now. I would have, I should, as a GM, you should know that answer by now. I think you have a gut, but there's a technical process about a no movement thing, right? That doesn't mean in September I can't go talk to Jacob Marks and go, hey, dude, like, what's your thoughts? Well, and I wouldn't be surprised that conversation has happened, right?

It's just that. But what I'm saying is, oh, do you think, I don't know if they want to go talk to him? I'm not sure. I kind of with Brett, don't you have a relationship that's somewhat to the extent where, hey, I know you're hearing your name a lot, We're not looking to trade you, but yeah, teams are calling. We don't know how this is going to go. We're going to try and wait, obviously, but what do you? And again, what the agents do?

You don't call Markstrom if you don't have that relationship. You call the agent and go, hey, dumbass, what's his deal? And then the agent calls and massages in it because he's got the relationship with them. It shouldn't be that touchy a subject. Yeah. Kids these days. There should be more clarity when you. you get into March about what this team is.

And I know what we've been waiting for that for a while and by Christmas we'll know a while, but you know what? That's not what he's asking. That's not what I'm asking. No, but that, that's a huge variable in this, this decision is, I'm not talking about what I'm saying, what I'm asking is. It's just asking about the, it's just the relationship between Conroy and Markstrom. They make it sound like, ooh, geez, you better not, you know, are you really in a position

where you, you can't even, you're sitting having a beer on the bus on the way to the airport or just whatever. It's like, you're, fuck, man, you're playing great. It's unbelievable. We don't know how it's going here, but are you here? What do you want to do? How would that convoy have gone with Kipper with two years

left done of steel? Do you think it happened? I'm asking. I don't know. I think it would have been fine. Yeah? I think Kipper would have given you an honest answer. I don't think it would be. Yeah, like we're speculating on what conversations may or may not happen.

I have no idea on this one. Again, I'm not saying what conversations may have happened. I'm just talking about that. Every time you hear that, it's like GMs are shit scared to talk to star players about potentially, you don't do it until you've, is that the relationship? Like, it's going to take a bigger event than this for us to talk about trading him, even though you as a GM, it's your job to know, okay, what's he worth, what's left on the deal? What other teams need goal? He's like, I think this is all very normal behavior, no? you understand, I still don't think you're hearing, like, like that's all the formatics of it, of getting a trade. I'm just talking about Conroy and Jacob Markstrom.
