Rhett, you're ready to go. Rhett, the Calgary Flames host of the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday. And it was the day after our epic annual. How did Friday go? How did Saturday go? How are your bills? Walk us through your weekend. The bills embarrassed me.

Really? I felt like. They killed a parley of mine. Minus 10 in Cleveland. Yeah. Got the win. They got the win, but it's, they don't look promising, I guess.

This is not a defense that can stack up in a playoff run and do damage. They just get lit up. Alan tweaked his ankle. He did. on the sidelines a while there. I woke up Saturday. I was a little slow. Surprisingly,

okay, though, because I left fairly early. It's the thing about day drinking. It's beautiful stuff. Like, you get at it early, and, you know, you're so far removed from it by the next morning. You know, actually pretty good.

So Saturday was okay. It did start to wane a little bit, but had to go to the flames game. I'll tell you what. That was one hell of a hockey game. And the barn was buzzing. I tell you, you get those holiday games.

people are jacked up great crowd and the team did not disappoint no there was i said before that i don't know one player that i would question what are you doing there yeah well you were no good they were all good now if i could go over the vegas roster i'd have doesn't matter maybe it's because the flames were dynamite got to give them credit they put on a great show longberg scoring fighting clapka running into the goalie they were skating they were in control of it they they're only impressed. Bloody Lombard just always has to fight dudes way bigger, and he does not give a crap.

I think Klapka wimped out there. That's the only thing I would say. So there's two things that happened. Clapka ran over the goalie, and he and Lozahn were talking early. That was on the goal. It was after the puck won in. Nothing happened.

And Lozahn and Klopka are chirping. And then I think Lozahn drills Coronado, and Lomburg's like, that's enough. Yeah. Now it happened to be after. he scores, but I did say, I was at the game as well, I'm like, we're going to get a Klapka-Losan fight. And Lozan, I think it was like a top two or three guy in total fights a few years ago in the league. Like, he can handle his business. This is something he's good at.

I thought we were going to get Clapka Lozon. It sure looked like he went right over to Klafka after he bumped the goal. Yeah, and you're like, okay, here we go. Obviously, this has to happen. Yeah, you got all night. It's going to happen one of these shifts. Whatever. It was good on Lomburg, good little scrubs. crap. Backlin looked good. Backlin looked good. And hit a crossbar of the shift after his second goal. It's almost like five seconds after you scored. I had to go Google it. He has one hatchick in his career. Yeah, I know. It's too bad, actually. Almost two. Almost two. This first one was like way back. I want to say like 2016 or something. And it was one even strength, one power play, one shorthanded. But that line's going, man. And Zeri's come back to life. There's no lines that aren't going. That's fair. Yeah. Like the fourth line immediately put.

put their fingerprints on the game early because Klopka gets the goal. You get in the scraps, Lomburg scores. Yeah, like that didn't play. Three points. Anderson's playing a ton of minutes. The defense looks like it's completely solidified since getting Kuznetsov in there. And Bresdivich.

Anyone missed Jake Bean and Mirmanov? I don't know that we're shooting for the moon, but they're a competitive squad. Yeah, Which is kind of... Which is kind of... I'm not going to give them shit for playing their ass off and putting on the show. And look, like, if you're a player or coach, your job's going games.

Like, this tank stuff is not for players or coaches. It just isn't. Like, that's not how pro sports works. Even in the NFL, it's like Tennessee Titans are out there playing their asses off trying to win. Big win on the weekend. They're not thinking about picking first overall. Big win. Huge.

It's the GM and management that have to force the hand of the coach by taking away good pieces and clearly they're not there yet. And they aren't there. Probably will be. I don't think they're blinded by anything. No. But watching that game makes it, you can see that you can argue the other side.

You were a sniveling prick. And here's the thing, Jack, there is a full pizza in there that doesn't say rats do not touch. You touch the do not touch. I didn't even look. I just grabbed the boxes. You know, and yesterday, guess what I had? What is you have? I had a lasagna.

But guess who didn't make it for me? Jack. That's right. Jack's outstanding debts. The ledger is really. Holy. And then he was talking about three in the country on Friday night. Oh, yeah.

What are they? 10, 4 and 1 in the last 15? Pretty tidy, right? You're going to have to do that again. Yeah, you need another 10, 4 and 1. And like the Sabres won 6 in a row. There's still like 6 points out in the east. It's, it is so compressed. There's so many teams to pass. I don't buy them as legitimate

playoff team. I do think they're going to move Rasmus because they don't agree on money. Rasmus was on after hours on Saturday, and I'd recommend it. I think Sportsnet put the whole entirety of it up on on YouTube. And it's, God, of like that guy. And it's so, you feel weird saying it. Like, you got to trade rasmus.

Love the player. Always have. Like, I remember as a swagger, it's got some physicality about him, all situations. There's zero issues with them other than you're getting older and you want a lot of money.

And I don't even know the money. You've got me all confused about the money because he earns, he's earned it. He's going to get the money. I know, but you're saying the cap's going up. So maybe the amount. I don't think he's a bad investment.

I think he's the wrong investment for a team that is looking to enter their prime in, let's say, three to six years. I think it's not opposite. I think it's something different. It's less about who he is and what he is. It's more about what you need to get to be better down the road. Yes, I think he's a good player and a great asset for the flames. The problem is if you don't move them, you don't get that return. You don't get a couple first rounders.

That's the problem. No one is suggesting Rasm's. Anderson is not a good player worth the contract he's going to get and that he's going to torpedo your team. What we're saying is, man, if you moved Rasmus, that would help you follow the standings, get a better player and the assets you get in trade. Better slotting. And like if you really want to turn this thing around quicker, you don't sit on veterans

and let them turn 40 and walk out the door. You move them while they're worth stuff. I know what's been said. But it's a good player. That's why you'd want to move. That's it. You're moving him because the rest of the league wants him and you can get a good return. Because he's so valuable, you're going to get assets back.

You're going to get a first and hopefully a really good prospect. And if you get a bidding war, maybe even a third or fourth piece. Like you look at the Lindholm deal. Like, Elias Lindholm is not a bad player. You know. Way winier than Rasmus. Seems for sure. But it wasn't like, oh, you can't pay Rasmus that's going to kill you.

Like, no, the Burns are having a nice year. And Elias is a part of that. But it was like, look what you got back. You got Bristevich. You got Gridden. Like, those are two huge pieces moving forward. You don't have those if you've got Lenton. And you're like, yeah, you know, Lindholm maybe is earning his money this year.

But like, imagine this team without one of the top young players in the American League, this organization, who's going to graduate this spring or next year and be a big piece moving forward. And we've loved Bristevich. Never mind the other picks that you got. It was five pieces. And Farby and Frost you don't get unless you had Kuzmenko or Kuzmankov. in that deal as well because you send him to Philly with Peltier who's in the American League and you turned it into two

NHLers. Verby looks really good. Might be tradable at this point with that contract. Hell yeah. Now you're running everyone on it. Not run out of town. Trying to get this team to win a cup. Not easy.

You definitely don't just... You're going to get some serious pushback if they keep. If they win the next two games... Oh, I know. I can feel it coming. It's like, I'm worried about Seattle, Columbus, Chicago.

Seattle has got a real... Seattle's got a contender look about them, don't they? They have a committed look to... Yeah, they've only played 33 games. And they traded Mason Marchman on the weekend as well. Yeah, they're already starting. They know. They know.

Yes. This is getting very complicated red. I did not have the predators all the way up at seventh from the bottom on my bingo card. So is Utah in the final wild card? I'm sorting by points percentage and the game's played by Utah. You can see a really high. So it's a little misleading. 38.

Well, 471 is tied for the second worst team in the league. So they're like a rounding error away from being second last still, despite this run. They're trending up to... They're trending up, but they're also trending to play the Oilers to the next two. I don't know what to make of their... Where the hell is Buffalo? Buffalo has won six in a row. You're going to lose that bet, too, Jack.

They're undefeated. They're three and oh since they changed the GM, not that that's something that you feel in the room necessarily, maybe there's a bit of fresh air. These sneaky Chicago black guys might be doing a damn fine job themselves. Because if they get another high end. And they've blown a couple sure wins too, butards out on New Year. They've got an excuse. They've had a lot of excitement.

I know. So it hasn't been just a complete debacle like last year. They might be the bells of the ball as far as the draft is concerned. This is a Seattle Chicago showdown in my mind, right? That's where I'm at. The thing for Chicago's, they don't have to get the number one. No, no, gosh. If they get a top three?

Well, and again, I was saying it the other day and boom, didn't seem to understand my point, but I don't think there's a huge gap between McKenna Stenberg-Verhoff. You're just, what kind of player do I want? I have them all in the same box in terms of like they are all doing things you don't see happen often. Stenberg's the highest scoring guy in the Swedish top league in his draft year ever at this point. He's tracking to beat the Siddines, Nazland, like prolific Swedish. players. Verhoff is 17 years old playing top minutes in Nodak.

That's a big NCAA program. He's at the World Juniors. And McKenna, I mean, not a great year this year, but not a bad one. And I think we're going to get a little bleep you over the world juniors here because he's not playing with good line mates of Penn State. They kind of screwed him a bit. So I

sort of see it as there's three can't miss studs at the top. You can add some other names. It's not like it falls off a cliff there. But Chicago doesn't, like, they don't need to forward. They don't need a winger. They don't need whatever you want. If they got any of those guys, they're way better. They're going from average to elite.

Right now is when you don't want to test drive a vehicle to see how it actually works. In the winter that you live in, the climate that Calgary carries seemingly forever. Let's get up there. Let's start with the Calgary Flames. Rasmus Anderson was front and center on Saturday.

Another great game. He's having an awesome year. There's always that fear. guys in his walk year. What if he has a bad year? He's going to hurt his trade value. The flip side of the coin is, oh, of course he played well.

This guy's working for a contract. We hear all these narratives when guys get in the last year. He's been awesome. He played on a broken leg for multiple weeks last year. He was not at his best. Plus minus is pretty ugly. It's been excellent. I looked.

He's just on the outside of the top 10 in defensive scoring this year. Rasmus! He's right there with Rasmus Dahlene. That's a few games. Fair enough. He's right there with their Carlson's of the world. I don't necessarily think that's how you would describe him as an offensive defense. But he's doing it all.

He's playing big minutes. And he's been a big part of a flames resurgence over the last five weeks. So the conversation is very much front and center. On every trade board, Rasmus right near the top, if not the top. Pike does a little diving. And as far as the rumor mill, last year, they were asking for a first and a good prospect. This year, I'm sure they'll be asking for the first and a good prospect. And if he's playing this, maybe your best prospect or two of your best prospects or two firsts.

Rasmus then went on after hours of Scott Oak, did a great job chatting with the Hockeyton, Canada crew, always candid. It never feels like Rasmus is spinning some sort of PR nonsense. That's just who he is. What you hear is what he feels. There's not a filter. There isn't a PR training firm that's telling him what to say. Rasmus is Rasmus. We love Rasmus.

He wants to be aflame. He basically said, I'm hearing insiders saying I'm changing my mind. I'm in him out. He says nothing's changed. The problem is it takes two to tango. I want to be here. And clearly he and the flames are not on the same page financially, which I understand from both sides.

Rasmus has been an undermarket deal right out of entry level. He's making $4.55 million is a guy that might have been Trillivings best move. Hard to argue. You locked him in six years, I believe it was. It immediately became a deal. He's been a top three, top two to five. defenseman, pretty much the entirety of the deal. And at the end of the deal, you're still going to have the ability, in theory, to move

them out for a huge pile assets. That's about as good as a signing gets. Now, the rumored ass from Rasmus was max term $9 million. That's the Jacob Chikrin deal, eight times nine. The flames are more comfortable with the rumored amount of what Neil Pionk made, which was a six times seven. And while eight times nine and six times seven sound close, they're not. One's 42 million.

and the other 72 million. You're 30 million apart. And I'm sure that gap's probably narrowed a bit. But does Rasmus's trajectory match the flames? And to your point, does Rasmus on the flames for, let's say, the next eight years help you more or less than the package you're going to get in return

and all the cap space you'll have down the road when, as most people will, he'll start to decline in his mid-30s until he's out of the league before he's 40, like 99% of players in the NHL. It's a real pickle. It's a pickle. But love the Rasmus, check out the video, and, yeah, I feel for him a bit because if this team was run differently, it's an easy extension. He's a core piece.

We're contending. We need him. The problem is, they're a point out of second from the bottom and only a few points out of last in the league. Do you believe that what they have? I don't know if we've ever discussed this. I don't. But do you believe that what they have outside of their NHL squad, that there's enough talent that keeping in,

when those guys graduate, Grin specifically, Rashney, I guess, in a perfect scenario. Cogs that comes back, do you believe that those guys are good enough to keep Anderson and be competitive? Do you know what I mean? I don't.

I think you're right in Mucky Middleland. Yeah. And so what I think is that if you move Rasmus, now you go get your game breaker in the draft. Because if you move Rasmus, this team's going to feel it. Big time. I also think you've got a log jam on the right. Weger can play both sides, but he's a righty.

Restavich is a righty, Perix are righty, Henry Mews is a ready, that he's coming. He's going to be a good player, although he's done for the year. That's a few years down the road. It's just when you sign an eight-year deal, you got to zoom out a bit. And if you've got five guys that play the right side that you think are NHL D men,

take away the name bars and the feelings you have about a player and just say, oh, you got a lot of righties. You could trade a righte and add somewhere else on your roster. And in this case, it would be in the form of a very high pick that hopefully could be your number one center or a star player for the next decade. We'll see. What if you're not trading Cadre Coleman?

I could see the moving, I think the most likely scenario, if I was guessing, and this is a guess. They move one of the two. One of the two? Not both. Because they just do have this inclination of like, we really don't want to bottom out that much. Exactly.

If you're not trading those other guys, then I think you keep Anderson. I think if you move just Anderson and not the others, you're still going to get yourself a top three pick. It's just the minutes he plays are not, like you can't just fire Brestevich into top pair minutes right now. Even top four. Yeah, there's going to be a major drop off.

And even when Perrette comes back, it's like, look, very skilled, very talented, has not figured it out at the NHL level. I mean, he's played what? 15 games in the NHL, I don't know, something like that. Like when he gets a couple hundred games in, he's going to be hopefully an electric player. He's not there yet.

Same with Bristavich. So you think they trade Anderson and then one of those two years? Yeah, it sounds like they've had a billion calls on Coleman because he's the type of player that is so easy for a contender to add. You're not scared about the term on the deal. There's only one you're left. He's worth his money. He makes 4.9.

He's won two cups before. And it's that magical third-line checking winger. He won two cups in Tampa playing with Barclay-Gadryo Yannigord. And obviously, it wasn't the third line that won in the cups is Kuturovs and Vasilevsky. The Halsk, the NHL website is just dog shit. You've got to go to the other ones. Hey? Yeah.

Like, if you're running. Might be something you want to look at. A league. Yeah. Make it good. Like. make it easier for us to fall in love It's terrible.

Anyway, sorry. Yeah. So I think Coleman is going to have huge demand to the point where it's like we have to accept this offer. There's only one year left on them. I am going the other way and boom, sit it. I'm not, it's not a fight.

The problem is I don't disagree with what they should do. Right. But what they will do is what they will do is different. I watched that team and I got the sense that they do have a good. They believe. And they do have a belief. And they like playing together. It looked like a team that was enjoying the challenge.

Yes, for sure. Now, it was Vegas without Eichl and Theodore, and that's not nothing. And I didn't love their... Yeah, but there's other teams out there that don't have an Eichl. You know what I mean? Right. I understand what you're saying, but I don't think that that matters. So do you think they can make the playoffs or no?

I'm not predicting they make the playoffs. Yeah. What I'm predicting is that they like... They told us. They like their core. Yeah. They like their guys. Yeah.

I can see, or at least I can sense, those guys like playing together. They think they can make the more. They do. They believe, yes. And they should. And good on them for believing, because there's nothing worse to watch than a team that doesn't believe.

What I'm getting at is that you keep going back to, are they going to make the play? I don't know. They haven't made them for three years. Yeah. I don't think they make it this year. I don't know that they care. No, they're still trying to do it.

That's not the right things. They clearly they care. It'll care about our expectations. Yes. They don't care that we think this is a better path. They agree. They like Codry. They like Coleman.

They're obviously arguing with Anderson. And I think, I don't think they're blind to the, we could really get some nice pieces. But I also think there's, I would say there's a ton of turmoil down at that, at the Saddle Dome. In front office. With all those guys,

trying to stir those drinks, not sure what the recipe is supposed to be. There's a lot of opinions. Yeah. There's a lot of different paths. And we've seen a lot of different hockey from the, you guys are horse to now. Yeah. That's a good team. They played well.

I agree with the entirely. I think there's probably been some very, very heated, like, pleading of like this group can compete. And I think there's also probably been some really strong, like, guys, here's our chance to go get the piece that. it's the hardest to get, which is the superstar. And they're probably both right to a degree. So, sir.

Like, you definitely have an opportunity to get a superstar in the draft, and you could do it if you move the right pieces. And you could also, as you're saying, make a compelling case that, you know, what you saw in that environment Saturday night, if you can replicate that another, you know, maybe you can be eight in the West. But I just keep saying at the end of the day, like, let's say somehow, some way.

this team goes on an absolute tear and they sneak into the playoffs as Wildcard 2 like how you can do against Colorado? It's eight days in jet fuel is the Sutter line. Yeah. Yeah. No, again, I'm not arguing that they I just, when you watch them live,

it's like, they don't agree with our take. No, and that's fine. I don't want the players trying to lose, right? Nope. I don't want the coach saying let's not prepare a game plan and let's not work on the penalty kill, which was horseshit for the first month. been really good since.

Now, most 19-year-olds are not allowed to play in the American hockey leagues. If they're drafted out of the CHL, Gridden was drafted out of the USHL, then went to the queue. He's on pace per the win column, I'm an excellent flames blog. One of the greatest U20 HL seasons ever. It's a great company. Talking about Rantanins and all kinds of really impact players

that if you drafted out of Europe or the U.S. All of European guys that get to play in the H.L. Look what he's doing at 19. Like, he is one of the youngest players in this league. He's almost a point per game. This is rare air. Like, we saw this type of production from, let's say, Conor Zeri, like two years older than Gridden is right now.

This is impressive shit. And this is a great sign for the Calgary Flames, who I think have a glut of wingers. And if they got to a spot where they said, we got to make room for the Hansicks and Griddens of the world, Hansik's probably done for the year. But moving forward, like, if they liquidated a winger or two, I want to see this guy in the spring for 15, 20 games.

And there's still like six points out. So they clearly have made up some ground. But the East is insane. And where are we at in this arc of this Canadian team being ready for games that matter? It's going to be a pretty unbelievable tournament. I think there's so many players getting ready to make their debut. T. Jiginla is going to be playing likely his first and only world juniors.

He was probably going to make the team last year, but of course he had that hip surgery. There's just so much coming up. Obviously, a lot of pressure on the Canadians. maybe that pressure is mounting a little more after dropping that 4-2 exhibition loss to Sweden. Some not-great moments. A couple of shorties, power play didn't look fantastic. Of course, we had the own goal. But, you know, that's what the tune-up games are for.

They have their last practice in Canada today before flying out to Minnesota. They've got one more pre-tournament game against Denmark in Mancato on Tuesday. And then time to go, facing Czechia, probably the best rivalry we've had come out of this tournament. in the last couple of years, like checks have knocked a mountain quarters two years in a row. Last time it was a guy playing up in Edmonton, Adam Yeko, a St. Louis Blues prospect,

who scored with less than a minute left and knock the Canadians out. So they know that they're coming in with a lot to prove. And there's even one player on the team, Braden Coots, the Canucks prospect, and Captain of the Thunderbird said, it has been frustrating to watch as a fan. So now he's got a chance to do something about it,

as they all do. Do you like it being in Minnesota, right? Because I know they move around. It'll be highly, yeah. I think it's a perfect place of the term. Yep. It'll be very, what's the word? Not anticipated.

It's kind of the last level where truly anything can and will happen. Latvia took down Canada in an eight-round shootout last year. How do you pick? There will always be the heavy favorite. Sweden looks pretty dangerous.

The U.S. will be trying to take a tough team. You've got actually Vern Fiddler's son is trying to make the squad this year. He was one of the last cuts last season as one of the youngest guys there and now Seattle Crack and defensive prospect for the oil kings as well, hopefully trying to play on home soil and bring back a third straight gold medal for the states. Do you have any, sir, go ahead, Red? Well, I was going to ask, it's kind of, it's not off topic, but there's, there was conversations I had over the weekend. At the Flames game and Sunday at the rinks from fans saying,

how do you not invite this guy? How is this going on the team? How does the highest score not make it? And I've said the Pickford kid, blah, but you could make two teams. Totally. Completely. I'm glad you mentioned Bryce Pickford. I was just looking it up a couple minutes ago.

He has scored in every single game for Medicine Hat, if not a multi-goal game. In December, he had five straight game-winning goals. That's a huge pick for the HAB. Can't make it. He's not there. Leading the W.HL scoring as a defenseman at Christmas. Jeez. Thanks a time.

The guy's an animal. You know what? We talked to all these kids on the Tigers about him last year because he had goals in nine straight games through the playoffs going into Memorial Cup. It's like, what is it about this guy? He's a freak. He's the last person on the ice. He'll just shoot.

and shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot and you can't be stopped. But it is hard. And like you think about it, look at the NHL talent that's not going to be there. No Ben Kindle, no Matthew Schaefer, according to Frank Sarvelli, looks like we're not going to have a Sam Dickinson

or a Berkeley Caton. So really they only have one more cut they have to make and that's probably going to be a goalie. The talent is unbelievable. It's just a spoil of riches for fans, but unfortunately doesn't necessarily translate to wins at this tournament. People forget. Macklin Celebrity is still eligible for this tournament.

Like he's that young. Should we put in a call? Yeah, maybe Mike Greer, you got his number. Just get a couple weeks, want to borrow him. Bring him back in great shape. And two 17-year-old defensemen and Carson Carls and Keaton Verhoff. How unbelievable is that? Super young.

That's my buddy Jimmy play fair coaching that Carl's kid up. You know, I talked to him about it. And I think one of the things that really attracted Team Canada breast to Carson is that, yeah, there is an offensive side to him. But for his age, how defensively sound he is, it's massive. And talking to Carson, he says, like, specifically, he does so much work with Jim Playfair. And they've ironed out so many details. And he's won a lot of trust up in Prince George.

And it's been paying off there. They've been a powerhouse team for the last couple of years. Yeah, Jimmy coached me right under the league. So he can do some amazing stuff. I thought you got Cowboyed out of the league. I didn't know it was Jimmy. Geez, taking stress. It was my ability.

It was the damn lockout. It was my ability. What's the WHL representation looking like? And this is sort of the first year where you're going to see NCAA players that had significant development in the dub. It can be a bit of an awkward party, I suppose, for some. Before you answer that, because you can answer both. So there's that. How has the, in your opinion, NCAA experiment gone?

So it's been interesting for sure. And I think it'll take more time to see how it all plays out. But I think at the end of the day,

players having more options for them and their families is the best thing for everyone. Yeah, I think, you know, you look at the history of the game and there's been, you know, quarters of centuries where players didn't have a lot of rights. So you like that kids have options. You also don't want to leave team sander. I will see as time passes, how they settle out.
