This is what baffled us because like adding Adam Henrique isn't a bad thing. But when you had limited assets, limited cap space and essentially one first to go get what you wanted at the deadline, they chose a Swiss Army knife third liner rather than a second pair

defenseman. And here you are now playing Darnel Nurse on the third pair and scratching Cody Cici. We saw a dramatic need for them to upgrade their top four defense. They chose not to Walker? Sean Walker. Walker moved. Went to Colorado. Walker, Texas Ranger. That's the thing we don't.

Could you have had him? Chris Tanna. Could you have had him? Could you have him? The Tanna was probably harder. Flames probably did not want TANN of going north. Yeah, I mean, if you want to overpay, sure, but you're right. They wouldn't have got them at the same price as someone else would have.

Well, and, you know, what a quit. Flames probably could have gotten Cody Cici in that deal if the rumors were accurate. Are they looking for six, seven, eight defensemen? I feel like they got a thousand. Like there was a CC TANF deal to be made. You just had to eat the CC money. That's right. Which is one more year left.

Too much for a guy that's being healthy scratched in the Stanley Cup final. It's ups and downs. Is it all CC or is the guy that he was out there with? They just haven't been good together. And I don't think either of them are second prayer defensemen at this point. Were you shocked to see they were back together? Because I was. I feel like it's kind of a common knowledge.

McDavid where is 97? Yeah. Skinner lets in the first shot of the game. Sure. C.C. and Nurse, tire fire. Right. I thought that was kind of, so it's weird that the coach,

the hockey whisperer there, Chuck Knoblock for all the praise he's been getting. Yeah. Slap those two back together. Is it a Broberg thing? When he was throwing a first or is that someone else I was thinking of. No, it was yips. Yeah, the imps. Couldn't throw to first.

He keeps putting back C.C. and nurse. It's tough when you're a shortstop. Getting the first baseman, it's kind of key part of the position defensively. Can you be a D. This is going to suck then. Oh, you don't. hit them for shit. Um, so I mean, we're having, we're taking some, uh, taking a piss, but no,

but you're right. He's been complimented on a lot of really big decisions in the series that have gone well. Putting that pair back together, he's tried it a couple times. It hasn't gone long. It's kind of like for, for him, though, it's when you've got a small room and really just kind of a couple pieces of decent furniture. Yeah. You can shuffle them around as, uh, that doesn't really work. Uh, okay, well, we got a comfy chair and then we got an end table that kind of friggin wobbles and that we got a you know we got that one's got bedbugs in it there's only so much he can do I just thought

and I wonder what have you thought of Brobert Brett since he's come in because he's the kid he couldn't play is to those two go back together as protection for him is I don't I don't know why you'd put that pairing back together but I don't I didn't understand it either to be honest with you Broberg's been fine

it speaks to what Pinder said though they don't have they needed that defenseman. They have two tough four defensemen and they might win a cup despite that. That's how overwhelming having two of the best five players on earth is. It's just, it's felt like a huge miss at the time. How do you not upgrade that decor? And if it goes poorly, it will be a glaring swing and a miss because they do think that

they're overcoming it, not. Yeah, they're surviving it. They're not thriving with it. And we're giving them, we gave them a lot of praise last round to say, well, played a certain way and they did this hence this hence the confusion as to why did you go back to that right i don't like i don't get it you're playing good hockey and now what you've done with cc coming out you've created confusion again for guys in a stanley cup final when you didn't need to at what point did cc and nurse play well together they never really

have in the playoffs honestly yeah so i think someone attracted the last three posts seasons and it's just like huge huge differential not in their favor and you'd made the switch already you'd already yeah so what cool act to play with one and day and i played with the other then they bring in broberg could when day honey struggled with dallas's speed that worked pretty darn well they're giving him big minutes but i mean is it crazy to think they have two top four defensemen that feels insane and maybe it's because you're up against the best team in the league or you're the best and they're the second best. So we're,

they're under the microscope. But you're spending $11 million on two guys and one scratch. You know, there's a third pair. Yeah, it's, I feel like, because I'm,

obviously at home and Bouchard. Excellent pair. Excellent pair. So you've got two. Yeah. And I like your third. But I think if you get, if you get a third,

you probably have four top four because it elevates. Sure. Yeah. And if you get, if you bring a Tenev type in, he's going to make the guy next to play better, for sure. I was just looking that Joel Edmondson,

a third and a fifth. Now, I don't know what the, what the Oilers have for picks there. You weren't going to give up a first for Joel Edinson. I also don't know how much is left there. But, I mean, he was okay for the Leafs. He came in there and played okay.

It's better than what they've got there right now. But why weren't you after a walker? Yeah. What did he go for? A hard top four. Like, go look at the minutes played per game and go get a guy that plays 20 a night. Yeah. Now, that said, he wasn't very good for them in Colorado.

In Colorado. He was a huge disappointment. Yeah. they had him paired with, I think, Johnson on a third pair. It wasn't really the role that he had in Philly. He also looked good in the regular season before he didn't in the playoffs. I don't know what to make it. It is what it is. To lament the past, let's not.

Let's not. Is that my policy with the Oilers? I've been digging up Shirelli extensions here trying to stay calm this week. No, it's not what we do. We don't stuff things in our backpack and carry them around for decades. We didn't even mention it didn't go well for the Oilers in game one. Did we tell the people that? I think the people know, Rhett.

In a lot of ways, I think it did go well. Yeah. They looked really good. Things, they got the start they wanted, roared out of the game. I mean, they allowed one pretty quick, but yeah. You don't think they had a good start? I think they did. It's just the way it was a five minutes in.

They're down one-nothing. It wasn't, they've had a lot of starts with it up two-nothing five minutes in. But yeah, no, they wouldn't play bad at all. They played pretty well. If you were, because it's, you want to survive the first few minutes when you're in the visiting ring. It was the home team that had to survive as the Oilers came on. The story of the game is, by no mistake, Sergey Brabrovsky. He was unbbedbed.

believable. Robert. As he improves the 13 and 5 with a 2.08 and a 915 save percentage through the playoffs. A pair of shutouts in there as well, one of them coming on Saturday. A couple breakways, some incredible and tight chances. He does not get beat down low. They have the graphic on the broadcast. You know, like, was it 14 here, seven there? And then like two or three at the bottom of the net.

It's like you watch him. He reminds me to Jonathan Quick when you just, you're not going to get anything in the bottom half of the net. He moves so well. I was thinking about you again. It's of your many takes over the years. Yeah. One of them, there might be some crow. Is it going to be the oilers are poorly, you know, poorly developed and put together?

Yeah. If they win or is it Bobrovsky's a horrible contract? Well, I mean, it's, look, how many years are we into the seven-year deal? Five? Four. Four or five or four? There's been some really, really, really, really, really poor play. And I think they've figured out how to use them.

I mean, they started last year in the playoffs of Alex Lyon. He played down the stretch for them to get in. They almost missed last year. He gets hot and they go to the final. I don't know that you're going to look over the course of the deal and say, hey, we spent 70 million on this guy. It was a slam dunk. But if you fly a flag and he's your cons myth,

that was a hell of a good year for it. It's been a very mixed bag for being honest about it. But the last two springs, you've loved it. It's what it is. Is there any, is there any goalie that you look at and say he has been consistently worth the value of his contract. Is there any, there's how many players you can do that? No. I mean, I think for skaters, there's a lot more.

Right. But the goal is particularly hard. Even just look at Markstrom here. It's every other years. But isn't it odd to think that I'm trying to take noodle side of this because a goaltender making five has to be the backbone of the team. But if he makes,

he's not allowed any, but some other players that's making five. If he doesn't show up, it's not a big deal. Yeah, and I think, like, even we talk about teams wanting Calgary to retain on Markstrom, and you're like, six million bucks for a guy that's probably going to finish top five or six in Besneville.

Like, that's not crazy money. Why would you be eating some? But it's because of what we just said, that there isn't more than a handful of guys that you know we're going to be good every year. There just isn't. Hella bucks good almost every year. Last year he wasn't.

Shasturkin's been good almost every single year he's been in the NHL. Bob was the best goalie in the game and then looked pedestrian, for three years and now it looks like one of the best in the game again. They're too volatile to give that much money to. Unless you're one of those guys. Hellebuck's going to get paid. She's Dirkin's going to get paid.

Bob got paid. Didn't go well. Now it is going well. This is a goofy conversation. You have to have great goal to get good gold tend. You can't win without goaltending, but they're very hard to find. Don't pay too much for it. Yeah.

And then it's like at the same time, it's like, who are the goalies that you need? And then you look at the last six cups. And it's like Bennington was started that year. the AHL. Aiden Hill started as a third stringer. He's traded for a fourth rounder. And this year could be Stuart Skinner, who, you know, his career playoff numbers were 880s when he started this year. Hey, you hang your hat on, if you had a team, you can run it however you want. I know what my approach would be. Yeah, if you can go get a Hall of Famer, you have to. There are just so many guys aren't that. You look at the Rangers going Lundquist to Schisturken, like, crazy. That's hard to.

I put Demko in that category. I put Sorokin in there. There's a few other guys around the league. You know what else have been fortunate are the Canucks? They've had good goal tending. Yeah. Bobby Lou. Schneider.

Schneider. Armstrong Demck. Marks. No. Dan Cluchay. No. No? No.

Is that? Okay. Sorry. No. A little rough of my Canucks stuff. Just looking at Bobowski. This is, you know, this is year five. the first year had a 3.2, three goals against, and a 900.

And then from that point on, 906, 913, 901, 915, 2.37, 2.67. I put no one to be below league average, but I get the point you're making. And the thing is, what has that team been? Have they been elite the whole five years? I think the point of getting Bob was to send the message that we're going to be, we're in this now. Yeah, and again, we have to remember the context of it. They signed Bob like seven days after they drafted Spencer Knight in the top 15 in the draft.

That was some crazy what the hell is Dale Talent doing. And now, Spencer Knight, I believe, is either in player assistance or in the minors or his pause, press pause, whatever it is. He's just not around. But it was just like, what's the plan here? Are you expecting one of these two things to fail? Because it was just the whole pitcher didn't make a lot of sense when you committed $70 million to a goalie days after you drafted the goalie of the future and the first round. I mean, that's not Bob's fault. No, of course not. You take that money. Yeah, I'm not about a Bob. It's curious. It's curious for sure. It's Dale Tallon, what are you doing? And he was

gone before they got good. The, uh, at the other end, two on 17 for Stuart Skinner, who was mostly fine. You look at the goals that went in. I don't know. That first goal, you had to go back and watch it. It's, well, what are you defense? What are you doing? Nurse, it's a very, it's an elite level play by the Florida Panthers. It just is. It's a great pass along the wall. They're coming with speed and yeah, nurse bites a little bit and then C.C. kind of obviously leaves the guy, but it's not egregious. There's, there's some play by the forwards that kind of leads to it. And for Heggie finds a hole. to get it's over there, right? I think he should stop it. I mean, it looks like he's all there, right?

There's nowhere else for that puck to go. I mean, if Barkoff backhands it or whatever, top shelf for a short side there. Okay. But you know damn well, the puck's got to go across your crease. And he kind of slides with it. It beats him. I'd want that save.

That's fair. And then that second one, it's just kind of a it's a low percentage play that works some of the time. And it worked at that moment as Bennett fires it to the front of the net. You love though,

I would guess if you're a forward and you just, your eyes get big a sauce. Like, holy shit. It's good. It's coming to me. It's a soft play by the, or D. Yeah.

That pair is minus two. They switched the pairs. They're bringing a guy in. They're sending a guy out. And it reminded me a little bit of game six against Dallas. Like Florida was good. And, but they certainly weren't the best team.

And they just got a lead and got goaltending. They just, and that was Edmonton when they eliminated Dallas. I mean, it wasn't that bad because they got more than 10 shots. Yeah. I didn't think Florida was good, but they still looked like they felt comfortable.

Yes. Yeah. They weren't worried. And when you've got ball playing the way he has, I guess you can feel that way. Yeah. It wasn't like they were running around just, oh,

Oh my God. No, but there's how many breakaways in that game? Two or three at least, right? Like, it weren't airtight. It could have been out of hand early. Yeah. If the Oilers cash in, it could be three, nothing in the first without being, you know,

squinting too hard to see it. So what is it? So you've got in one hand, you got, Oilers played pretty well, didn't win. Panthers, you better pick your game up because you're going to be in trouble. Or, uh, so which is, right? Let me go. I'm in there.

We take it one game at a time. Okay. That one's behind us. We're just focused on, you know, first shift, setting the tone for the next game. Just we're going to come out. We're going to work. We've got to be ready to work. We know it's going to be a battle.

One shift at a time. Okay. What if that was like a bad Florida game? What if. That may have been. What if Florida improves from here on in? I mean, it was pretty quick. You didn't see much.

I don't think it matters though. Yeah. Because I think there's enough discrepancies. If you're playing the what. If, well, what if Bob gives up one on a breakway, right? It changes. If he's perfect every game, there's no chance. But what ifs are two?

Yeah. And look, like ifs and buts, right? We remember the Rod Rendemore, this isn't a sweep. Like, you can outplay a team and still lose in a short series. We don't like to see it happen because it feels weird. But the Oilers, I don't think they were thinking they got outplay in game one. And I think the Florida Panthers probably think they have more to offer too. I think we still have a good competitive series to watch.

Yeah, we didn't. I mean, Cachuk was pretty quiet. Reinhardt was, like, there's, there's some room to improve there. Barker was excellent. I would think if you're in Florida, this is not the template you want to use. Have your goalie stand on his,

yeah, head for 50. They let the other's power play operate more than you'd want to. I don't think it was a ton, but it was anytime you let them work, it's not ideal. Yeah. Was it three?

How many do they get by the end of the night? But I'll say this. as a casual observer who really doesn't have any skin in the game, it was a pretty good hockey game. Yes. This was not a suffocating, boring one. It was a low scoring game, but they traded chances. Yep.

It was back and forth. It was a hell of a hockey game. Physical. Sure. Yeah, they gave three power plays one way to the other. Penal kills are perfect. Non-factor on special teams, goal-tending edge to Florida.

That's game one. To kill, Rhett. your mouth busts have just been water and so good oh look at that cleared the zone again oh shot they're breaking the reeds good sticks

don't over commit good job they didn't over commit they let him move it give them the shittiest shot not the best don't don't panic it's easy so easy

Oh, you like game one. That's so weird. Well, I was going to say you must have thought it sucked because we kind of thought it was an entertaining game. So sorry you had to sit through game first. Frank. Wow. That wait. So you guys like hockey games like that. That is wild. Sometimes. Yeah. Not often. That's good. You're finally figuring it out, Frank. The Oilers said all the right things afterwards. We're not worried. We played well. There's nothing. We just keep doing what we're doing. And they're right. But you hate losing a game like that in a game one.

You're the road team. And to go in and you out shoot them, you outplay them and you get goalied for the most part. That stinks for sure. it's a tough one man like i look at that and i listen to them after the game and i don't know that i've ever seen a team so happy with a loss like ret i'm sure part of you listening to that you go what there are no moral victories in june you don't the deserved a winometer that doesn't count when it comes to hoisting lord stanley that's like the the road to to hell in the stanley cup playoffs has been paved with comments like that for decades. That part was a little bit surprising to me.

I think if you're, if you're the Oilers, there's two things that you're looking at. You're going, one, the moment wasn't too big for us. Like when they wheeled out the Stanley Cup to put it in center, before the anthems,

this is a team that didn't play in the Stanley Cup final last year. Everyone wondered how would they react. That would be a positive to me. And then the other thing is, too, for all this talk about the Panthers being, you know, so much of a better team and the clear sort of heavy favorite in terms of prediction, the Oilers didn't look like, you know, even though they lost the game, they didn't look like a team that's on a different level or playing in a different arena.

So to me, I think the fact that you can play with these guys and the moment wasn't too big, those are the positives. But to sit here and think that the Panthers aren't also going to be better in game two, that's the part that's a little tough for me to figure. So when did the cup being out, I don't think that's traditionally happened often, if ever, What's the story there, Frank? Well, it was around and it was in the arena on display during the bubble, but that's because no one was there watching it.

This time around, they wanted to just try and do something a little different. Maybe a new tradition that they start to just show you right, you know, sort of before you drop the puck, hey, boys, this is what you're playing for. As if they didn't know already. But I kind of like the theater to have that wheeled out and you see it. I like it too. Well, it's a great at Trovean sport. You can't overuse it, in my opinion.

Mike Russo had a report. It's like since the 60s. This is the first time that they've done it. And some people were saying that, well, this takes a little bit away from the cup is in the building moment. I disagree. I thought it was pretty cool because we haven't seen it's like, oh, shit there. And then you bring it out whenever it's time that someone has a chance to win it. It's not like it's flaunted all over town or in the building every time.

And then obviously it leads to Cici being a spectator tonight.

Likely to be a spectator, yes. Evander Kane walking around downstairs telling everyone that he's in tonight, despite not participating in the morning skate. I always find that to be interesting. But there was some talk with CC potentially could they go 11-7 and CC is the seventh guy. Look, you could go around and around in a circle here. I was surprised to see them go back to Nurse and CC because it clearly hasn't worked. The numbers don't lie.

You can make fun of plus minus all you want. But when you're on the ice for that number of goals, against in one single playoff run. And then you see the soft play that CC made down the other end of the ice in game one that directly leads to a goal. And it's two parts. It's CC being soft on defending, but then also Darnel Nurse, like, you read, how many times did you say to yourself, put your stick on the ice?

Like, you're defending in front of the net. It's not that complicated. Part of these are fundamentals that it's just, it's not working. They need more from Darnel Nurse. They needed more from Cody C. to go back and and switch things around now. The only question that I have is we've also kind of seen that the Oilers don't really like Darnell with De Harne. So what does that look like in game two?

I think it made sense we would see De Arna at some point. Bigger guys can handle the pressure and forecheck and physicality of Florida. But a little bit surprised to see those two go back together again. It was an odd move to go back to those guys. I mean, that's, that is, it's got to be one of the biggest. questions and at the end of the series, if they win, it won't matter. But if they lose, it will be hugely criticized. And they get scored on early, right? First goal. Yeah, dash two in the first, how many? Yeah. Yeah. Now, I mean,

this is another, we were already kind of talking about it. I don't know. It doesn't really help anybody today and it's revisionist history. But what, what deals potentially, as far as you know, could have been there for a defenseman for the Oilers? We know that they make the move for Henrique and Carrick and it seemed like, they don't know, they don't really seem to need more depth. It's a veteran guy. You love having that presence in the room.

But at the expense of a top four defenseman is kind of knowing where the cap was and that they only had that first as a real asset to move. Always felt like that was the greatest need. Yeah. Was there not a deal for them to be made? Oh, there was a deal. Well, first off, I think they really wanted Chris Tenev.

For one, I don't think the flames, wanted to make a deal with the oilers if they could avoid it, not that, you know, the Canucks are that much, you know, more palatable as a trade partner. But that was part of it.

And I'd say the other thing is, the oilers, I believe, made the incorrect assessment that they thought that TANV wouldn't be a big upgrade over Cici. And that is really probably where they've gotten themselves into some trouble here. Is how much better is he than Cici? Is it really worth,

you know, diving in and giving up the first round pick? Because had it ultimately come down to that, the flames are taking the first from the Oilers instead of from the stars. Yeah. Yeah. And honestly, flakes fly forever. If they somehow lose this series by one or two games and have done it with two to two and a half top four defensemen,

that's like, Tanna would, is a huge upgrade in my mind. Yeah, look, there, I think it's fair to say that the Oilers had a complacency issue when it came to looking at this trade deadline. I use this phrase all year long with them.

I said, this is a burn the boats type year. You're not coming back after this. Not to say that they can't be back here next season. It's just don't leave any stones unturned. You're not going to care about a first round pick that's 26th or whatever overall that, you know, they ended up trading anyway. That me, Henrique and Carrick, like, Henrique's been fine when he's been healthy, but not enough of a game changer for me to say that, you know,

you shouldn't have at least. tried to kill more birds with that one big stone that you had. And also sometimes some other moves that they didn't make, like they had to potentially part with Warren Fogle or Brett Kulak or someone else as part of this, you know, cat machination in order to bring in someone a bit heftier that Kulak has been unbelievable in these playoffs. He's found a way to elevate in a big way.

You know, what I'd say is their deadline was certainly a mixed bag. we'll pivot because I know that we've only got you for a few minutes with your responsibilities there the Markstrom stuff seems to just be getting hotter by the day leave for the weekend we come back and now it's Ottawa it's Toronto it's New Jersey it's Carolina you may have nothing on it but I have to throw it out there are you hearing anything or what's your sense on the Markstrom stuff because we're another day closer to the draft and it sure seems like it's building look I think the Calgary Flames my understanding

they're looking at this and are they willing to be a partner in in making a jacob marks from trade happen a hundred percent uh the new jersey devils are still there of course um when it comes to the sends when it comes to the leaf some of these other teams that might be interested um i i really truly believe that the flames felt like their best opportunity the best return that they were going to make the best package that they were going to get was going to be in trading him at the deadline and it's not to say that they're not interested now, they still need to answer the questions that we've been talking about for months, about how do you create a spot for Dustin Wolf?

What does that look like? Is Jacob Markstrom potentially going to be happy if he comes back? How much of the competitor in Markstrom wants the chance to win? Markstrom holds all the keys here. I think he's open to lots of different things, but the flames feel like the price needs to be met, the bar needs to be met in terms of what they're looking to get. and they feel like this time around because of the other goalies that are now available,

Allmark, potentially Soros, who's looking at a huge monster contract extension, whether it's a next tier down guy in Philip Gustafson, whoever it might be, there's way more goalies available now that New Jersey, my read on the situation is that they're looking at it going, we'll take any one of these guys, whatever one we can get our hands on at the price that fits, it's almost like their coaching search, whether it ended up being Craig Barrowby or Sheldon Keefe or Jay Woodcroft or whoever it was like, we just want to get one of them. And as long as we get one of the guys on our list, that's great.

And that's a lot how I view this market of there's more available than just Markstrom this time around. And they're going to have to, you know, decide whether the price commensurate with that is worth it to them to move him. Ottawa is new to that search, it seems as well. And again, it never happens. but it feels like all of a sudden maybe it's because of the, if not the depth,

just the uncertainty of that first round maybe, but you've got the flames at nine and well, New Jersey will move 10 and Buffalo, they've been drafting high forever and they got 11. And Ottawa, well, they've got seven and they've been drafting high. Is there a chance that we could see? Detroit at 15, another team that could use better goaltending that not necessarily needs the prospect?

They're not trading their first. Okay. Yeah, I just, I don't think Carolina's authentically in the mix either. I don't either. They never value goals. They never value goalies and they're definitely not, going to be trading legitimate capital to get one and they don't really want to pay one on their cap so i you can cross carolina off the list as far as i'm concerned all right fella we'll let

the only leverage they have here is bringing them back. Right? Yeah. If he doesn't want to be here, that's the only leverage they have. Yeah. Which might be enough. That might be all you need.

It's part of my language, but it ain't going to go well. Push up. And so they're not far away, and they have two first round picks this year. They got one for the Debrinkat swap, and the others is their own. They do have to surrender one of their firsts for the alleged, no trade list of Dadanov, which is insane. and maybe the league doubles back on that like they did the Kovilchuk first rounder with New Jersey. The new owner hated it.

That's kind of a sidebar, but you've got two firsts. You've got a very good young core. And if you wanted to use those two first rounders to add players to this team, it's a really good team. So maybe it's one defensive defenseman or maybe you chase a Tannaven free agency

and go get Markstrom. They're ready to start competing. They might be ready to dump one of their young defensemen too. Yeah, well, the chickering thing has been an absolute swing and the miss because now he's got a year left and they're trying to move them. It's like what was the whole point of that? We've been saying it for days. It just feels like New Jersey. We saw them a year ago be a very good team.

And then things fell apart on them this year. They have injuries that contribute to it. They've made a coaching change. Shitty goal-tending is the biggest thing that undid their season. And the complaint from the flames side on that deal was that they weren't getting enough in return. What Frank brings up with, I know, I know he's shaking. your head. But we don't know, right? That's what we were told.

We don't know. Connie thought it was enough. Someone else thought it wasn't it was and it's kind of the rumor, right? So regardless, it wasn't enough and it didn't get done. My question to all of it is, what is enough? Like, if they're taking that approach, Conroy and the Flames and Management and Ownership,

again, into this off-season, I worry because of what Frank just said. Fuck you. There's other guys. If they could get their pause in number 11, I think this is a slam-down. or 10, excuse me. Like, you have to find a way to make it work if you can get 10.

Because this is not a team that's good. This is not a team that has great young players. This is a team that's got a lot of secondary, tertiary pieces in their system. They have no stars. You need to go to the draft this year. If you had three first rounders, you could turn those into two core players. You can now start the clock on the rebuild. Not that it's soon, but it's like, those are the guys who are they building around?

Who are they building around right now? There's no one. There was not a single guy. you are building around. Hansick might be a middle six winger, posthal might have injury issues and never gets beyond a third line type guy. Zeri may just be a creative middle six player.

They don't have a prospect to build around. Maybe Dustin Wolf is one, but until we see it, no one's going to believe it. They need to go get some core players to build around. You can do that with picks at 9 and 10. If not that, the other name that we heard was involved in that trade

was Alexander Holtz, who is a recent first round. 23, right shot. Not a lot of power play time. Dripping with skill, but it hasn't worked in Jersey. 22, seventh overall in 2020, had 16 goals this past season. Hardly used in special teams. Like, there's better spots for him.

And you'd understand why with that New Jersey forward group, why he's sort of been blocked a bit there. It's not a center. It's the time to sell. Markstrom had a great season. And, but are you, if you're the GM and Fitzgerald, says, okay, let's do 10th overall for Markstrom.

No salary retention. Do you do it, Rhett? I do. I would as well. And you could argue both sides of like, oh, we want to, we need more. Well, we need more. Like, I usually that. If you're the Calgary Flames, that you've got to swing at 10. Like we've seen some mock drafts for Salio of slides till 10 or Ginnla is available at 10 or, you know, Kaden Lindstrom. Regardless, just view it as a top 10. But, well, my point is is that these, these are potential stars in the NHL. They might not be, but like what else are we looking at here? Like if the only thing that matters right now is finding potential stars. You can't turn it around until you do that. No one comes out of a rebuild without star players. So yes, I would do it. Now,

the only argument would be that we don't have to trade them this year or we can go next year and we can still get a first down the road. I don't know though. I just think that a bird in hand at this point is more than worth it. It's a really good season to trade marks from coming off of. I don't know what you're gambling. I don't know what you're saving by hanging on to the asset, gambling at lower numbers. Team's not going to be as good. The defense. No hat of them.

No, 10. You're going to get lit up. Right? Like, what are you hoping to garner if you hang on to this asset? Now, again,

we don't know what's coming back the other way. So we might be out to lunch as far as what's available. Yeah. But if it is what you, a tent or that holds or something. And even if it, what are you hoping to get? Like what's the catch?

Like what? We're just going to keep them and play them and help them mentor Wolf. That's that's your sign a tell that to mentor wolf if you need a mentor. That doesn't sound like asset management, which is what the team, Conroy and everyone has said since they stepped into these roles. They have to, and they do.

They need to do better job with asset management. If you had to handicap. It will go around the room of what the odds are that Jacob Markstrom's a flame after the draft. Where would you put it? It feels awfully low. 2%. I mean, it feels two. So this is getting done.

Yeah. I think it's got it's it has to be better than 50.50 is gone. Yeah. And maybe significantly so. And part of it I have to believe to your point is Markstrom's already said yes to a move. And it's not just New Jersey. He's already said yes to leaving Calgary. Yeah.

And he ain't going to want this hanging over. his head all summer. If he's making the move, he's probably saying, okay, it's got to be done now or, you know what I mean? Like, it gets all buddy and guys, there's different angles to it all and it's like, well, if he's going to accept it now, he'll accept it. And don't trade, yeah, if it's me, don't

trade me in the season. I might get over with, just I got, I got family and my wife, if it's happening, get it done so we can find a place and put some roots down and start to have it's only two years left. Hopefully we stay there for two years, but I don't want to leave in January. Rip the bandit.

LA is the other team we haven't mentioned. They have no goalies under contract. Cop plays up, Riddick's up, and Talbets up. Not that it's necessarily an easy fit with the cat. Sorry, he has a one year at one million, so he's a three. Riddick. He started in the A last year. You could do that again this year. Maybe he's a backup. They don't have a number one is what I should have said. Same.

But yeah, like, this is your chance, Craig. If Jacob Markstrom has an amazing year next year, which would have to be playing as well as he did this year, his numbers are going to be brutal. Look at the team playing in front of him. this is your best chance left to trade jacobarkstrom i thought and that's just it i don't know what hanging on to this asset does i don't get it i don't know how i don't know how you improve your team by hanging on to this asset yeah agreed and i think they may have arrived at this conclusion on their own already anyway and they're just saying okay what's it's the 28th of draft
