Yeah, that's right. I was doing out. You had to know, you had to know. Jeez. We were going to have a little extra time. 4.3 in a shootout. The Canucks beat the flames last night as we get into it here. The over.

The over, yeah. I was, I was, I couldn't remember if we had talked, because we had talked about it. We're going to, if it's C-Lovs, maybe take the over, but then it ended up being Lankanen. But, Rhett, your thoughts, just general thoughts on this matchup from last night, start to finish, because there's a little bit of everything in there. I think if you're up with under 10 to playing the third, you got to win that game. Yep. That's what I think.

They had it right where they want. that fellas, their goalie was playing great. They had a lead in the third. I didn't like the parading to the penalty box. The Canucks got most of their work done on the man advantage and they weren't necessary penalties. Like the Zeri one's unnecessary, which we'll talk about more later.

The Longberg one's unnecessary. The Pahal one where they ended up scoring a short-handed goal, but still it was just kind of a dumb. Unnecessary. Yeah. And that gave the Canucks life. And Elias Pederson, who's done not very much for the last couple months.

You give him extra time and space. Quinn Hughes out there. Hughes is good. That was, that kept him in the game. What's that, retro? Hughes is quite good. He's so good. Yeah.

He does have impact on a game. Yeah. If that fella could stay a little healthier this year, he's probably a finalist for the Norris. Like, he's that good. And heart, potentially. Yeah. He's just, he, in his first game back,

I don't know if you guys noticed, the first game, because he's been in. injured, right? Off to injure. So you kind of want to ease them in. Since before the four nations. Yeah. 29 minutes, 48 seconds. Oh. We. He's been coming back and getting hurt again, coming back and get hurt again. Like, the guy's not a hundred here. No. And still by all that, all that extra game time. Still electrifying and not 100%. I'll say this. He'll be a good devil. I like it's going to be, he's going to fit right in there.

They've done a good job with the cap. He's going to play with his brothers. And they'll be rocking at the Prudential Center. Dean, I'd ask you, but you don't have any. I don't know that Debrus even really saw the shot. It looked like it maybe hit a stick and then went in. And then, you know, Blocker, because I watched it all. Did this hit ball in the in the butt or well, but it was a rebound. It went right to Elias Patterson. Yawning. There's ball going. Where? What's that?

you're no curling up still hot he's got him covered that's fine still not your guy you've finished cuttersson got the way the defenseman it probably should be the winger at the point but they've swapped that's fine now codder comes back and now he were those guys wide open well i just and ball has to recognize i see it from a defenseman right ball is not eliminated anyone there's coverage on the other side of the ice and there's two guys coming out of the corner you don't need to get to the front of the net you need to hold your side and eliminate like it's a bad rebound goes right on his tape but ball didn't need to vacate where was he going if anything he's right like what are you trying to wolf are yeah are you trying to tip that in are you trying to

tip it like you mentioned the shot dino is that clean in on wolf or does that think it is clean because that's a weird rebound for Wolf. It bounces sideways here. Right. And I was going to say, that's where we are with Wolf that, oh, boy, that's, that's, that's a rebound. He's so good at controlling them. Again, I don't, there's not, there's not a clean angle. I still wonder if it does go off of something because there's plenty in front there.

It's like it's got it. But to your point, that's, that's irrelevant. It's the rest of the coverage. It's the problem. Because if you've got the coverage, you don't have the panic in front of the net. Like, here's the thing too, though,

sorry to jump on you. So that's at 645 left or whatever it is. At one point, shots were 16 to 1 for the Canucks in the third. I get protecting a lead. But the Canucks, it's their second in two nights. They're on the road.

There was just, I'd prefer, give me some killer instinct for the flames. Yeah. Go get this done. Why are they getting out shot 16 to 1 and sitting back? when it just felt like the whole game,

if they really want to get on the forecheck and get after these guys, because Hughes isn't right, Myers is out, lecker amack for whatever he's worth, like they're beat up on the back end or young and inexperienced. Get on these guys for some turnovers, but they just didn't. It was a lot of that curling off and just kind of safe, safe as we do. And maybe I guess if you don't think you're going to score many goals

and you have a lead, you do everything you can to protect it. But it just didn't feel like there was enough, killer instinct. Go and beat them as opposed to hang on and try and win it. How many times when we come in and said, like, you couldn't get the fourth goal because we're saying that again. Yeah, you go get the fourth goal. You win.

Yeah. And here it almost felt like they weren't even, they knew they weren't going to get it. So how are we going to win by defending? Right. One other observation is on that last goal. those are your veteran guys up front that are supposed to, right? Like, yeah.

You don't have kids and guys that aren't used to play it. And they should be more capable. I would think that that's, you probably don't have to show the clip in the room. Because those guys should know that was soft and not very good. I think it was Hubert O post game that said, hey, like one point's fine, but we got to be getting two against those guys.

Like, they know that's a missed opportunity. You had a lead in the later stages of the game. in your biggest game of the year with a chance to go three up on the Canucks with a game in hand. Now you're tied. That's a big swing. And it doesn't torpedo the season, right?

It's just, it was really, you've been playing well. You had the chance to definitely win that game. So there you see it. 71 points. Still a game in hand. Kent was on with me last night on Afterburner and he kind of made the observation that we're really

kind of still back to where it's, and you saw it was, Cadry gets a goal and an assist. Hubert or who you were twice. Weager 2 assists. And then it's just a cliff. There's just nothing. I didn't think Frost was very good.

You lose backland. So that loses things, you know, shuffles things up a little bit. But I don't think anyone was particularly dangerous. There's no elevators. And I don't mean in the hotel. Yeah.

No one can elevate their game again. Like I'm just looking here at the shots, 23 shots. Okay, well, seven went to Cadry. Geez. Four to Hubert O. How many for Coronado? Because that's all one line.

One. Okay. So that's 11 of your 23 shots from one line. You got to do better than that. Zary, Weiger, Lombard, pospousal, Farabit, zero shots, Coleman, zero shots. Frost didn't get a shot. So how many shots in a third in total?

Do you have that? 17 to 4. Let's go, boys. 20 miles. It's ice this thing. Four shots. And then zero shots in overtime. Overtime was just hanging on for dear life.

The Canucks just kept possession. They've got to make a rule. And this isn't a last night's game thing. Like you've got to just, it's really simple. You make an over and back. If you take the puck out of the zone, blow it dead offside.

Like easy tweak. Because it's just, the strategy is key. It's clear. You keep possession. You reload. You exhaust it. defenders and then when they break down, you go and finally take a chance rather than just

work the possession around. They've got to do something about that. Yeah. But good on the Canucks. Everyone can do that. They got the puck and they did it. The flames didn't. They, surrendered it pretty quick when they had chances in overtime. Now, we've had Ryan Pike, of course, he's a writer, right? Elias A. Pedersen, not forward Elias Pedersen. Elias. This is Elias Pedersen. Sure. Anyway, Zeri's got a hearing for his hit. And we know that Backland, which we've not talked about, he left in the first period, didn't come back the rest of the night on the evening. Two minutes, 58 seconds worth of ice time.

Zeri jumped right into that Backland line spot with Fairby and Coleman for the rest of the night. And it was kind of a, it spot the, I guess the Roonies and Lomburg's in here and there. but you're now looking at a spot where you have three NHL centers and one of them's Kevin Rooney. Who had an assist? And again, like he had a rough goal for a month or two around Christmas there, but it's been better. That line, I haven't minded in recent days.

But again, it's Kevin Rooney. Like you're really hoping he's your fifth best center. Yeah, he's become a bit of a whipping boy, right? There's a lot of things this team can improve on. He's not, it's not like it's a star that isn't living up to potential. he's a fourth or fifth center. But now it's Cadre first line. What do you do on your second line?

Because Zeri was the plug there. And I don't mind Zari at center. But he's now potentially gone. If he's getting a hearing, it feels like he's going to get something. They're going to get something. And so now you're looking at the farm and you're like, shit, is it Dryden Hunt time? Is it Rory Karen's time?

Because you're thin down the middle. You were before the frost trade. And this is why the season has been. been so precariously close to being really, really bad because all it would take was an injury to one of your top two centers. And it's like, shit, we got no depth there. Kind of amazing. We're 64 in. And not to say the quadry isn't durable or whatever, but that you've come this far and you really haven't dealt with that. We saw the ball injury and what kind of peril that threw the D into. Yeah, this has. Yeah, totally. This is even, do you move,

like I said to Kent last night, you can move Sharon Govich, because he's not doing anything on the wing. You're not sacrificing any scoring if you want to just. bump him over. Right. If you want to, you've got Klapka around, right? He can step into that 40. So you can put him in that bottom side right way.

Anyway, so why are we talking about Zeri potentially facing discipline? Here's the hit. Now, Elias Pedersen, the defenseman lays a body check on Nazim Kodry. You can see it at the top of the top of the screen there. So the hit has just been made and Zeri takes exception.

Clean but heavy. The hit, and then this is not clean. And again, is it, you're not going to see that five years from now. This is not Bertuzi on Steve Moore, but it's deliberate, and it's a forearm or elbow to the neck ear head area. It's totally unnecessary.

And further to it is Pedersen leaves the hockey game and doesn't come back. So that'll be the bigger part of it, probably because right I agree yeah it's just look he's vulnerable you're coming from the blind side wow and if you don't like the hit you don't have to drill him in the totally and so if you want to go get him go bump into him and throw hands a bit or put cross check you can't what if you give one of these on the on the wrists right well right out right here hey you right there yeah yep because what's that right there is that is that a sweet spot right

there that's a sweet it can what happens right in there it hurts It bruise as well. You get a nice bruise in there. Yeah. So we'll see. They play tomorrow. They'll have to know before then. Maybe it's today.

Maybe it's a fine. But it feels like it might be a game at least. They don't like headshots in the league anymore. It's true. They've learned a lot about brains and headshots aren't good for them. Brains. Yeah. Brains.

I think we could make a segment. brain. Brain. That's right. If only we had some explosion sound effects or something like that. Well, and then to make matters worse, it's not Anaheim rolling in tomorrow.

It's the high octane Colorado avalanche, and you're going to have to play against McKinnon, Nelson, Zaka, no, coil, excuse me, not Zaka.

Backland being out, which is the one that's going to hurt him more than Zari in that situation. Like, you're relying on Backlands to play a lot of minutes against. McKinnon try to hold them to one point boys right yeah yeah there's what's happening so one more on the homestand it's the avalanche tomorrow and then road Toronto the New York Rangers the Devils and the Islanders they'll probably just base camp in Manhattan I think right for that

what do we call in this the brother range is the devils for sure big smoke big apple the big road trip you just Toronto and New York state of mind I would call it back east because we were just out east. Yeah, we were just here. We're just in Philadelphia like nine days ago. And it's the last four games against Eastern foes the whole year. And there's some good ones in there. The Rangers are fighting for a playoff spot.

They have not lived up to expectation, but have come back from that miserable fall. Leafs are very good fighting for first in their division. Devils are trying to hang on without Hughes and Hamilton. Yeah. Yeah, what's the Hamilton? Is that come out this morning? He done for the year, right?

And yeah, it wasn't dominance, but especially on the power play, time and space, him and Quinn Hughes, you're like, that's dangerous. And I guess I'm just going to play. For a team that can't score having Quinn Hughes and if Patterson is playing better on the power play, that might be enough.

Well, and more to just the whole, like, how do you find a young center? Like, I don't know that you could give this guy away, but if he strings together 15, 20 games like that, you can, you can make a move. A point and it just kind of went, boom. Sorry. It's all right. It happens. It happens.

Do we have backflip clip? Like do we, well, let's see. No, they did show it on the broadcast. It's really nothing. I feel like he's been kind of nursing stuff,

something for the good part, good chunk of the season. Went into the corner. He just kind of got twisted off of a, off of a check in the corner. Could be a shoulder. Could be. hot ribs.

Anyway, yeah, and Kent talked about it last, last night that maybe you miss, already you saw what it looks like without Backland when you're in the late state, when you're in that third period trying to protect the lead. And now granted, you did have the guys that you'd want in that spot when the Pedersen goal goes in. Anyway, it doesn't torpedo, you know, like said, didn't torpedo the season.

You take a point. you move on. It's points in five straight for whatever that's worth, 2.0 and 3. I'd not, but it's backlin's back. But if he's out for a while, it ain't going to help. It might not torpedo, but it's sure going to make things more difficult. Pinder just talked about and he's railed about it before. They don't have center. Yeah. And if Zeri's gone, like I don't know how long. It doesn't look like it's a huge thing, but maybe it's a game or two. Yeah. I'm not worried. And Siri hasn't played center since prior to that injury against Anaheim

when our on-site doctor diagnosed the knee injury. Like, so you're asking Zary to jump in like Jan 7 was the last time he played center. And he's only played center for probably, what, 30 to 40 games in his life at the NHL level.

Even if he's back, like, I liked him at center. But it's a completely different game. The Backelan plays too. So it's fine. Totally. He can come in and he might be all right. but it's a different game.

It's a different role. You know where the spotlight now goes is it's okay, Morgan Frost. We can see you can stick handle in a phone booth. We know you got the handles and, you know, like, boy, throw them in the skills competition. You can do everything. But you have to start getting some five on five production results impact. And I'm not here to say don't make that trade because I still think absolutely make that trade. But it's time to do stuff.

Well, imagine if he wasn't he wasn't. I was just going to say. With all the war, potentially warts to his game, whatever you may or may not like about him. If he's not here, no, it's. Rooney, second line center? Death. Yeah.

And so it's not a boo, Morgan Frost. It's here's your time. You know, it didn't work with torts, fresh start. You are a center. We need to lean on your first. It's clear you're not a fan.

What's that? It's clear you're not a fan. No, no. I'm, I mean, listen. But if you listen to yourself, you can roll the tape. back. It's clear you're not, there's not a lot of faith. I just said there's a spotlight on now. Like, this is your chance. Like, if you want to stick in a phone booth, put him in the skills

competition. Like you're hearing the words you're saying, right? Like you are, you're taking shots at it, which is fine. What's the shot I'm taking? Like, what is he not doing? Ryan, no, no, because you're right. I'm not like, like, I want to see more from him. I think that's a fair request. I don't think anyone's watched and said he's been as good as you could hope. He hasn't been. So now is the, your chance to say, I'm not a number three center. I'm a top two center. If you want to make that statement, it's a great time to do it. Yeah, it is a great time to do it. I just don't know

that Backland being out is the spotlight that he needs. He should be contributing anyway, Backland in or not. The idea of bringing him in was to add the depth of inability so that we weren't weak. Now we lose back. Backland, we're kind of back to it.

And he, Frost has been just barely average. He's not noticeable enough. Really like a more powerful. place he's helped his own entries but it's not even it would be nice for him to do it because of course it would be the team needs him now that's what it is yes you need it and

the trouble is Morgan Fraud there's probably a lot of very capable centers you could put in here right now they're still going to have their friggin hands full trying to get some offense with the guys around to play that against McKinnon's line I don't know you want to go cadre right yeah hey Zeri who are who

whatever you're going to move you to center tonight it's Nate McKinnon. Yeah. So you may have heard of them. Yeah. Fast. You're going to have to really move your feet to keep up. Just an insider tip there. Jeez.

But it is it's just it's a broken record and it does get it. It's got to be discouraging, I would think, for the guys in the room because they're part of it for the coach to look down the bench when you're, okay, we need a goal. Where is it coming? How are where, how? Yeah. Rasmus Anderson. still the second shooter in the shootout? We can throw that out the window, right?

Like, are we done? Because he scored one. He had a good thing three years ago with the one move where he waited, and he hasn't scored in the shootout since, I swear. Igor, I've loved in the shootout, but he's not right. That almost worked. I don't mind Frost there. He's going to get a target on his back called Yeager.
