It is nice. Odd, but nice to have games that mean something at the. this point because two, three, six months ago, a year ago, we had all thrown in the towel. This was not a possibility. Watching cadre dance after scoring an OT winner at the end of March wasn't going to be important. Yeah, crowd is into it. Yes.

I mean, there's people you could see in the crowd as he was, as you mentioned, dancing down the wall. There's people hug and they're on their face. Well, this is fun. Wow, this is exciting. This is better than... It's sure great watching a group of guys care about winning, kind of like us as fans.

It was a good shot by him, but I think it was a stoppable puck. And then, you know, you could just see, you know, as the game went on, Buffalo's like, the hell with it. We're going to play hockey. And they've got some good players. Like this is the one thing that frustrates me about the Buffalo Sabres and people. They've got some really good players. They just, I don't know what's gone wrong there, if it's the secret sauce or whatever.

But this, the Tage Thompson's a player, tucks a player. You know, they've got some young guys that are coming. Bowen Byron is a really, you know, mobile defenseman. Dahlene, I think, is a star. It's just, he flies under the radar and he's got a little chip to him. But they've got a pretty good team. They just don't play as a team very well. And they score early in the third.

And then Ottawa tried to, you know, dig back into the game. And, you know, you could see them squeeze their sticks a little bit more because they need the points. And Buffalo said, not going to happen. So they get a big three to win. And, you know, Buffalo's on a heater right now. Went and beat West, or Winnipeg, was it? And then now it's the Ottawa senators. And they continue to roll.

But it was not that exciting of a game, I'll be honest. Are you worried about the Sends? Because that's what, three of four that they've lost now after the six of seven. They're four up on Montreal. It still feels like they're good. But this is their first time through, right? As we talk about for teams like Washington or whatever, this is your first time through for the Sends.

None of these guys have really done the playoff thing before. It could be some nerves potentially. Well, I think there's nerves. I think there is playing meaningful games this late into March. but, you know, it's, as I've seen in the west, it's like the east, everyone, there's a jockeying, and it's like, I don't want it, you take it, you take it type of thing. And what Ottawa could have done last night was created that separator. What they did is they suck back down to, like the group down here is now sucking them back down.

I still think they're a playoff team, but, you know, I fly, you mentioned, Detroit. I fly to Detroit tomorrow. That's Ottawa, Detroit, head to head. They play in Columbus on Saturday. They play Columbus or they played Pittsburgh on Sunday. We looked at their schedule. Okay. From a strength of schedule, they've got a pretty good schedule because the teams that they're battling against, they're playing. They've got Columbus. They haven't played Columbus yet this year. They play them three times here in the next 11 games. So, you know, they control their own destiny. I thought they pissed away at least a point last night. And, you know, NHL teams are allowed to win games and good on Buffalo for playing spoiler. But I even said on

our broadcast, that's got to be a game they have. Like, it's a must win because you just pointed out, Boomer. The separator is now they're five points ahead. And it's like, okay, that's a tall hill to climb if you're Montreal or whoever else, the islanders trying to de grease their way in there. So to me, it was a missed operation. It makes tomorrow's game even more important. And then heading into, like they are going to play 11, 12, 11, I think it is, playoff games heading into the playoffs here. And they've got to have that urgency.

Last night, I thought that they were the better team throughout the full 60 minutes. If you look at the metrics and the possession and chances and all that, but they lost the game. So that's really, you know, that's what matters is two points. And, you know, that's, there's got to be some. urgency to their game. And the Sabers. We don't.

Do we need to discuss the Sabers? Just quickly, are they downtrodden? Are they just like, they do have talent? It shouldn't be what it is. That Norris, is he hurt?

He's hurt. He's missed next games. And to me, I think what they need to do with Josh Norris is get him to the end of the season. Let him have a good summer. Let him understand that he's not

in Ottawa anymore. Let him embrace the city of Buffalo and be a hell of a player. because he's a really good player and that organization needs him if they're going to try and turn the corner. Jack Quinn's a good young player that's still learning. And Lindy's old school and he sat him out and he's doing, like they've got some players there. And I think that Zach Benson is nice. I think they've got some guys that are decent players.

I like their D. What about power? Like you need more from them, don't you? You do. But like keep in mind, Rhett, and this is a Randy Carlisle, having living in Toronto. I'll never forget what he said, and I agree with him. He said, you judge a defenseman because their development is a little bit slower than a forward, and they're a little faster than a goaltender.

But he said, a defenseman, you can tell what they are after 300 games in the league. So that's, you know, three full seasons, maybe into their fourth season. I look at this power. He's, what, six, five. He looks like he's 163 pounds, like he's very light. but I think he's going to be a player. But it might be, it might be when he's 23, 24,

that he grows into his body. Edmund's like that. What's that? Headman was like that. Yes. So you've got to, like, I think the play, I mean,

Dahlina took him a while to settle in the league, and I think he's a hell of a defenseman. And I think he's a bit of a, like a dirty bastard too. Oh, yeah. I'd say that respectfully. I love it. because he's always, it's punching the face,

cross-checking the ribs and that. He's not a fighter. Like he knows when to do that when there's numbers in front of them and stuff. I actually respect it a lot. You want him on your team, right? But they're D that Samuelson, they signed to a long-term deal.

I think he's a stay-at-home guy who's a stabilizer to Dahlene. I think power, you know, you look at it. I, you know, Bowen Byram is a, is a guy who I think has more upside. He's a good skater. He can handle the puck, but he's had concussion issues. So they do have some pieces there. But it's the same.

They've got to have, next year they've got to have a stretch where they're not eight points out of the playoffs by November, you know, December type of thing where you're talking about learning lessons again. Calgary Flames. Well, I was going to say, you want to be playing, you know, play your best hockey. at the right time of year and peak at the right time and all that and the flames are it feels like they're kind of doing that it's they've won four in a row it's all been in kind of come from behind fashion last night they're down two to one they tie it and give up or they go ahead and they give up a tie and goal but they get it done but cadries is where he's at playing his best that we think we've seen him in calgary or at least is matching that hubertoe is at his best mackenzie weger's been great i think rasmus Sanderson's had a little bit of a resurgence here after a bit of a dip in play.

Wolf has been outstanding. The St. Louis Blues are saying, you know, we can do that too. It's going to be a dog fight. But we talked about it. Last thing, if you were at the game, I'm suggesting that you had a hell of a good time if you were cheering for the flames. The right team won and you weren't sure if they were going to win. This is what the playoff push is like. and it feels like it's been a long time since Flames fans have been able to

to kind of get into it. The wolf factor, I think, makes things a little bit different. Not to say, we didn't think Jacob Markstrom was a good goalie, but it just feels a little bit different. But man, they still need some help here, it feels like, even though with games in hand that they kind of have the driver's season. They control their own destiny, but it's not a lot of all. And if you look at it, guys, the, there's that website strength of schedule.

And I think Calgary is like 18th. So meaning they've got some favorable matchups. They control their own destiny with games in hand. And I mean, this St. Louis team won't go away. Like I think they're like 14, 2 and 1 in their last, you know, 17, something ridiculous like that. 14 and 2, yeah. Yeah, sorry, 142 and 2. So, you know, yes, they're on a nice role.

At some point, will they hit the ditch? But, you know, what you need to do if you're the Calgary Flames is control your own destiny. And what I like about it, And now you're playing with fire and you're dinking around getting behind in games and then having to storm back and have this, you know, I'm watching that New Jersey game. I'm like, oh, they're dead in the waters three one off day, you know, whatever it is. And all of a sudden it's five three. You're like, holy smokes. How did this happen?

You know, for me, they're finding ways to win different ways. And it's different heroes every night. It's not just, hey, it's Dustin Wolf or, hey, it's this player. you're seeing like as you mentioned resurgence nasm cadre looks that's the best i've seen him play in a long time there was a and i would only say this respectfully but there was a time where i was watching him this year and i'm like i don't know if the legs have fallen off he didn't look like he had jump the game and you know and everybody was out to lunch but the game in Toronto he looked awful he looked like father time had caught him and of course they they win the next night but i just

Nazim Kadri looks like he's got some zip to his game. And that's what he needs some snarl. He needs some bite. He needs some speed. He needs to use his hands. Like that's what makes him a unique player. A unique player is somebody who can bring something different to the table in what is ever needed within that game.

Nazim Kadri can do that because he can fight. He can hit. He can score. He can be an emotional leader. And you're seeing that. Like last night was a prime example of him. you know, taking the ball and running with it. And, you know, I'm not behind the scenes.

You guys are closer to it, but it seems like that team is having fun. It seems like they've got some chemistry within the room. It seems like they've got something special there. You know, I'm not going to say it was 04, you know, because they don't have Iggy, they don't have Kipper, but they have a young Kipper technically, right? And, you know, it is, but it is,

there is a formula there that they're getting it, down and they're playing for each other and that's what's impressive for me why they're not telling you how much they like each other they're going out and playing and showing you they don't have to say oh no we like each other we're really tight group it's like you mean not like that not like zedoroff yeah we talked about that earlier at brought it up that the value that there has to be for the young guys to be part of games that matter here to see the veterans in the room not i don't give a like Exedorov a year ago where they don't care and all they want is where am I signing next summer and all this sort of thing to see Codry, right, a veteran, one of the leaders of your team,

how much it matters to him. That can't help but rub off on even guys like Frost who's 25, but they, not a lot of experience there in the playoffs for these guys either, but the young guys are really feeding off of this, I would think. I think so, but you look at a guy like Frost. I think Frost gets it. His dad grew up around, you know, around the Maple Leafs. He's a Toronto area kid.

He's Canadian. Understands Canadian market. Understands he's coming from a scenario where, you know, Philly, I mean, they gave up a touchdown again last night. Like, they're, you know, they're in one and they're obviously in a rebuild. He, Morgan Frost understands what's in front of him. Like, I've got a real opportunity here to grow my game, you know, Canada, Calgary. Great organization. The organization is amazing first class.

You know, these subtle stories that we forget, you know, that Connie and Peter Hanlon fly to pick them up in the private. Like, not every team does that. You know, Toronto Maple Leafs have nothing but money, but it sounds like, you know, Brandon Carlo flew from Tampa, you know, first class or whatever. But it wasn't PJ. I don't think it was.

Like, to me, there's small things that the details that the organization's doing. And Connie deserves a lot of credit here too Because he could have easily said Rasmus Anderson And I know Pinder probably was like Salamo, you know, I don't know where he was at with his mindset. But, you know, Connie saw something there and gave the guys the opportunity. It's not like in the offseason, he's not going to continue to tinker to make this team better.

But he said, you know what? For what we have right now, we're sticking with it. And let's see what the guys can do. He's given them the confidence. They're paying him back by playing that way. Well, and you would have never guessed that St. Louis would be that good, where that's the team you're trying to catch, right?

Like, anyway, that's, it is what it is. But for a long time, it just felt like someone was going to make the playoffs here in the West, and I'm sure maybe to the same extent, but it's because Vancouver wasn't very good and the flames weren't good. Somebody was going to get in. It was just going to be the best of a group of men. But now the flames of him,

they've up their game, and obviously St. Louis, Are the wild capable of falling out? Like they're only two up on St. Louis, game in hand. I mean, the wild is kind of in one because, you know, they've certainly fallen off. Now, didn't they get dummied last night? Wasn't it 5-1? I think it was to Vegas, I believe it was.

I put a clinic on. But, yeah, like, Minnesota isn't, you know, 100% solidified. You know, two can make that spot. I mean, is it conceivable all of a sudden it's Vancouver and Calgary? I don't think 78 to 85. I mean, what do you make the magic number is low 90s, 90-ish? Chat GPT says 93. I said 95.

I said if you get 95 you're in for sure. The AI's on you, 93. I think chat GPT is correct. I do believe it's like low 90s. That'll make it. because again, these guys are playing each other. There's three-point games. There's playing each other, all of that.

I mean, Calgary, you're dealing from a position of strength if you take those games in hand and you turn them into points. It's just harder, right? Because the schedule, you've got three more games to play in this kind of same amount of time, right? Like, I don't give a shit what you say. It's going to pile up on you. Every other day for the next month is a lot of hockey. Well, and if you're predicting it,

you go on their winning percentage. You've got 12 games left. They're winning percentage. You can't just trudge along your winning percentages. What is it, 563 or whatever it is? If you're going to do that, you're probably not going to make the playoffs. You might need a 680 or 700. You might have to win seven or eight out of the last 12 that you are,

and that puts you in the playoffs. But it is, it's going to be an uphill battle, but it's worth it right now. this is meaningful hockey. I don't know if the market's excited. I do have a trip to Calgary plan soon, so I want to feel it. But I think they're in great. I think there is going to be some form of a market correction for St. Louis.

I just don't think they run the table the rest of the season. So you circle that. You're right. Minnesota is not dead in the water, but they're certainly leaking oil. So, you know, there is a scenario where maybe St. Louis climbs over Minnesota and minis the team, but I would still think there is, St. Louis is going to hit the ditch at some point and maybe, you know, lose three or four type of thing. Calgary, you've got to find a way to get points every night and even against formidable opponents. That's really the key.

Yeah, we got Dallas tomorrow. Well, you've got to hope that, you know, Dallas. either has a hard fought battle against Edmonton tonight and they don't have much on a back to back. Really. That's what you're hoping. You hope that Dallas doesn't have an off night and Evanton

lays the beats to them and then they're pissed off coming into Calgary. You want them to have a victory up north and then play the backup. We want him fat and happy. That's what you want. Fat and happy. Hey, we just, we beat a team that knocked us out of the playoffs. And hey, we're going down to Calgary. Yeah, they're battling

but, you know, we'll play our backup, we'll do this and that, we'll still make it through. You've got to find a way if you're Calgary to go, we're going to expose a team that played the night before. And you can hope that maybe the Oilers take it to the ground and have a physical battle with them and that they wake up going, I don't know if I want to do this again the next night. We talked about it with Dreg's last week, I guess it was, just the offer sheets and do we see more of them, just because of how well it's gone for St. Louis. Again, last night, St. Louis wins, 6-1. Broberg, a goal and three helpers,

Dylan Holloway, a goal and an assist. The blues are, truly, they're not doing what they're doing without those two guys. And Edmonton misses both of them, and the blues are loving life with both of them. Maybe you don't get two guys from one team, but I do wonder if there's more of a focus to try and get guys this way, because we talk about the flames.

You talk about the retool on the fly. That's a way to approach it. Well, I've always been of the believer, and I don't want to take credit, but my boss told me the other day, he goes, you called the hallway. So I called the offer sheet on the hallway. I didn't call it on Broberg, but I did call it on Holloway because I liked what I saw in the kid. And I thought to myself, I think he can be a top six. And I don't know if he was going to squeak in there in Edmonton as quickly. You climbed the ladder, right?

with what the depth that they had at that time. But I believe in the CBA as a tool. And there's always been the old boys unwritten law and all of this. I still maintain if Ken Holland was still the manager, that offer sheet doesn't happen because he not only just the respect that he has his relationship with Doug Armstrong, but I believe he would have gotten the contracts done. I don't know if there was a disconnect.

I don't know if there was arrogance from the Oilers organization. I don't know if they're worried about getting dry-sadled on and said, we'll deal with these guys. Keep in mind, these players have to sign the offer sheet. So they see, you know, their agent or somebody has said, the opportunity for you is not going to be there in the next year or two. You might want to move on because it takes balls to sign an offer sheet because it's saying, like, I want to leave your organization.

or you're not valuing me with a contract offer the way I want to. So to me, I think it was a brilliant move by Doug Armstrong. I think it was a miss by the Oilers because they had to replace those players, either internally or trade for them. But it happens. You have to adjust. And St. Louis is better for it. And I do think that there will be offer sheets this summer if teams aren't careful with

some of their players. Can we keep you for one more? Yeah, absolutely. This one, I'm confused by it. I don't understand how a city like Chicago isn't a place where guys want to play. I don't understand what the organization is doing to piss people off. I don't know what the organization is doing with a guy like Badaar, there's no support there.

It looks, I'll say it, piss poor. Yep. And why and how and what in the F is going on in one of the most storied franchise in the NHL? Okay, so elephant in the room, the Kyle Beach thing, you know, let's be honest. Like that, that's a smell that the organization has to wear. And it's going to wear for a long time. And, you know, the way that they do business has changed. And, you know, good for them.

We hope that it's shined a light on a lot of things. That being said, you're right. That organization is storied. There's, there's history there. It's an amazing city. It's an original six. And, okay, fine. I understand you bought him out to get the golden goose.

You bought him out. But surround him with NHL players to help him grow. For year one, I didn't think they did that. I think year two, they tried. And, you know, it's Bertuzi and guys like that. They go and get left-handed shot played in Toronto and Vancouver, which is name. Skate a million, million dollar wheels, 10-send hands.

What's his name? I don't know. Russian. I could see his face. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So anyways, it'll come with it. It'll come.

But they go and get some players this year. It hasn't worked out still. This summer, I do believe, is the most critical. Not only for Connor Bardard, but for the Chicago Blackhawks. Because I look at San Jose, and I think San Jose is ahead of Chicago. Oh, for sure. And not just like by a player here or there. Like they are, I think San Jose is going to be a really good team, 18 to 24 months from now.

Casabrini have grown. They're a franchise. Yes, I agree with you. But they went and got the Goldie Asker off. Ask her. They're trying. Like they're trying to go, okay, we got a young core and we're going to build around it. But I think Chicago needs to sign and go big game hunting in the offseason and go.

We're going to get a number one winger to play with Badaard. Or Baderd, you are a winger. We're going to get a number one sentiment to play with you. Is Knight a guy that can fill the, do the job in that? Okay. So from a talent standpoint, yes. Now, it's well documented. He was in the program.

I do believe I'm not sure what it was. I think it was for personal time. So in the end, you know, that's something that has to, will probably always around him. but if he can get through that and manage that, then I think Knight has the ability to be a one and be a very good goaltender. So I think they're trying,

but you can't just try on one or whatever. Like I'm saying you've got to go big game hunting in the offseason and go, we're going to spend $12 million on an $8 or $9 million player, but we need to surround Bardard with legit players that are like him, better than him to make him better because I look at Celebrini and Bedard I think Celebrini's ahead of him right now and Bedard's got a year head start on

and Celebrity's a more complete player the way he battles for pucks and yeah and you don't have they're going to be compared all the time because they go back to back first overalls and maybe that's even maybe it's not it is what it is and that's all fine and good is there any and you

I've not heard I'm not saying there is Is there any fault to be found in Connor? Baderd. Do you know what I mean? Like, I'm of the opinion that the organization has done a terrible job for the last however long. But my concern with Baderd would be, and because I got kids in sports now and you see all that goes on, this is a kid notorious coming up, ultra-focused, ultra-committed, ultra-alture, ultra-hockey, hockey, hockey.

is there a possibility it's too much and there's a burnout factor because he does not look like a kid playing in the NHL No, I think there's a possibility for a lot of different factors and I'll give me an example of one

is Bedard I think he's a winger I don't think he's a centerman I don't think he's a fast enough skater I don't think he's strong enough you know you look at number one centerman through the league and you put him up against it

like they, you know, Barkoff, Matthews, you, I go, like, these guys are big and can move and they'll, you know, they'll lean on it, dry sidle, like guys, they lean on you physically. So there's no shame in that. If he goes, if he ends up over as a winger, they got to get somebody that can pass him the puck because he is still a player for me that can score from distance. I do believe he's got a great shot. So you've got to find somebody that can get him. the puck. Now, he, individually, you said, does he have to wear some of it? Yes, because he has

to have good off-season to continue to work to get faster, stronger. That all comes with, you know, it's a term man-strength. You know, you got to get, just become stronger and have that old man-strength type of thing. That's going to come. So Bidar can control. And the other thing is the details of his game. He's not very good defensively. Learning to play away from the puck. Brett, you just said it, and I think it's very interesting. Every person I've talked to about Boudard, he knows what to do with the puck when he has it. If you look at possession numbers,

the best players in the game have it on their stick for about a minute, minute and 10 per game, okay, out of 18 to 22, 24 minutes a night, McDavid. Like, so how are you going to get the puck back? Where are you going to go when you don't have the puck? Defense, like his game needs to be rounded out. He's not very good away from the puck. That he can control.

That's coaching. That's understanding the cadence of the game and going, okay, I'm going to fade away. The puck's going to follow me because I'm going to go in an area where the puck's going to go. Like that's understanding it. So these are things that he can control, but it comes back to he needs to play with better players that are going to place him in situations.

Maybe you play with a good centerman that is good defensively and not expose you as much. That way if you're on the winger, you know, you're on the way. you just have to cover, you know, the least responsible position is the wing on the ice, right? So I think there is things that the organization can help with him, but I also look at him, and it's just a progression. It's like get bigger, get stronger, get faster, and understand the game away from the puck.

Because the best players, to your point, Rhett, growing up, they always had the puck. So they've never really had to learn away from the puck because it was always get that guy the puck because he's going to do the damage. So everybody always deferred to them. In the NHL, everyone's a good player. So they're going to pass it to his teammate, pass it. And now he's got to learn to play away for the puck.

And I don't think he's there yet. And it just takes time. It's an interesting shot across the bow, though, right? And again, it's the Freedom Report that maybe we're not so gung-ho to sign coming out of entry level. We're maybe thinking that there could be other, and he's of the caliber where you can, you can say that kind of stuff.

If you want out of there, they'll get you out of there. But yeah, it's because there was a stretch of time where Chicago was so bad. You didn't even think of Chicago is anything great. And then Kane and Taves and all that. This is the greatest team. I can't believe this team was ever bad. The city was alive. It was.

It's a great city. And listen, you know, outside of politics and that, yes, there's a lot of grit there. And, and, you know, the city has changed a little bit, all of that. but it's still an amazing city. The organization should be top-notch, original six, and I think that's what they need to get back to from, you know, the respectability factor. It is a work in progress,

but you do have an amazing young player that you can build around. They just got to build up. You should get another one this spring. Yes. You can get another top-tier player this spring. Maybe they get the Schaefer kid. Maybe, you know, maybe they, you know, to me, I think there's a lot of potential,

but you've got to start turning like, hey, the future and all that. Turn some of these draft picks and some of the things that you have for currency into live players to make your team better to get to that next level to help the development of your young players. That's my concern.

They haven't done a good job of it, but what, Dregor's, and we'll let you go, but Dregor was of the opinion that guys don't want to go play there. So even if the money, right, and that's where I'm stunned by that. And I'm saddened by that.

And that's a concern because they've got cap space to go spend money. They got to go after it. But I guess if a guy doesn't want to sign there, you can't make them. That's why I said, and I kind of alluded to it at the starting, it's like, you don't have to spend $11 million on an $8 million player. Yeah. Go, hey, you're going to come and earn some pain here, but, you know, we're going to compensate you for that.

Like, this is not a small market. This isn't a team that shouldn't be sexy. but there is, as I mentioned before, there's a stench around this organization that unfortunately based on what's happened in the past and they're still working through it and all of that. But you've got an opportunity for change there. And I think they're headed in the right direction,

but you need to continue to push it to that next level. And Kyle Davidson or whoever, if he's not the guy, they've got to find a guy that is going to get it to the next level. I do believe that they have a plan in place. It's just a little bit slower than you're looking at San Jose. And I think San Jose is going to be really good.
