So, but boy, they could have been out a long time ago. They could have been out today. I think they were the second best team in two game sevens. And they've won them both. I'd agree with that. I would agree with that. Which, you know, it's not the end of the world. We see it all the time where it's like,

yeah, you'll play a team, you lose, and that happens. And their goal has been bloody unbelievable in game sevens. What was he, 35 or 36 last game seven? And now he allows two on whatever. Like, you're getting 950 probably from your goalie in game sevens. That helps. I want that save last night, too. Too much to ask, Dean?

it's already bounced off. This is the challenge when you have rules that have all this must be gray. Your interpretation is to say, I think we're all in agreement. They would have counted it. But we've seen crazier shit. Like the Anheim goal on Edmonton, no one was in position to call it a goal.

They called it a goal. Like you never know with this league. They can screw up calls that you're pretty sure. you're going to go the other way. There's times where we've all been very adamant. We have it right. And well, like the Blake Coleman one was absolutely insane. You think about that series against Edmonton and 22. He's hitting the brakes and they call that a kicking motion. Yeah. Well, that's fucking insane. I've never seen anything. So clear cut, not a kicking motion. It's a kicking motion. But I don't know. Like, what do you do?

You needed to have the better goalie? The two nothing goal was not off of a skate. I don't think Can the Sabres call him a cloud law for maybe UPL lack of support? I'm not sure what the case would be. It's quite a, it's quite a pass.

Like, if you told the Sabers they were going to, your goaltending was going to allow two through 60 minutes, you're like, okay, we can do this. The challenge is, at the other end where they had numerous opportunities and could not score. Even when goalie was down and out or there was a huge pile of bodies,

like we can go look at the two. It's still only two. Like three won you the game if you got to three. That's a good point. That's what you needed to do. And you're calling card as a team, which we talked about was you're a top five offense in the NHL. You've got great speed, depth.

You've got a lot of guys that can score. You couldn't get to three. So it's on Dobish and it's on you for not finishing. Yeah, if there's no question about it, They outshot the HABs 30 to 14 from the start of the second period through overtime. They were all over them. How they didn't manage. It was another one of those things where Dobish is down and the puck is there.

And you're just looking at the net. You're looking at the back of the net. I'm going to see the puck in there any second now. And it doesn't get there. Just somehow miraculously stays out. Tage Thompson had the great chance in overtime. Good. kind of a, you know,

whatever you want to call it. It's odd man rush. It's a chance. He manages to hang on to the puck the entire time, but not get a shoot. Like it's incredible. It's incredible. I think he should have.

I thought he should have passed. He had the five hole two there. It's just, there's just, there's a guy on him. But he's all just. But the defenders on the wrong side of him. Like he's got the inside. Oh, all of it.

But he's leaning. He's like, like he's holding. he's holding him off. There's a good. Not ideal. So that was a big moment. And then he kind of,

Peace Sabers. Then he kind of turned the puck over. I guess kind of just kind of bit of a turn over. Well, the overtime winner, that's the Dolew. That was Dahlene.

Dahlene's getting cute at the line and you're like, get this deep or get it on. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I agree with, I think that's more of the Dallene trying to make a play.

He gets the overtime winner here. They've played a lot of hockey. These Montreal Canadians, and they're about to face the team that's not played hardly in. They've been off for a few weeks, Dina. I think they're just packing up with the all-inclusive flying back now. Yeah, maybe. Navy.

And they don't start the other series. The Habs would have played double the amount of games at Carolina's probably with their overtimes, yeah. Because I think Carolina had a couple overtimes against Ottawa, maybe one. They went to double. They went to double, I think, didn't they, in game two or whatever it was against the Sends? Either way, it feels like it's about double. Yeah, no, it's got to be close.

Three games, was it three against Tampa Bay in round one? Yeah, I'll tell you, just watching. That was the first time in the series. Watch it, and I get that retro year with it with, the rooting interest in that, it, it frigging sucks. But watching this game yesterday is like, I still don't need it to end. We could go best than nine.

Yeah. It was, it was fantastic because you didn't know who was going to win. One goal tender at one end is, you know, it's like rope ad dope. He's just taking body shots. He's on the ropes.

He's, knockout punches coming, but he manages to stay in his feet and avoid the big blow. And they come back down, they scored it. They were down to two nothing. Come back and tie it.

It's going to overtime game seven. It was, It was tremendous hockey. Even the last game where both goalies got pulled and it was, you know, it was lopside, whatever it was six on 33 for Dolbush. Even that game was, I don't know, that's three. No lead feels safe here. This is, this is three one habs.

They had the league. Hell of a series. Fun tournament. That was the series of round two. And it feels like we're way down the road, but teams are halfway there. Everyone's got eight wins. You need 16. Well, I feel like Montreal's been in the two best series of the playoffs.

Yep. Tampa Bay in round one was the best series. I think we all agreed on that. And this one... I got a soft spot for the ducks. I really like that series team, but I... Yeah, we did talk about that. Yeah, we did bring that off.

It's true. Yeah. What else would be... They'll be my... I was cheering for the Sabres, but I'll love how the HABs play. Yeah, and it's the most exciting brand out there. We're going to see that again. Like, those are the two youngest teams in that division,

and they are the two best teams in that division. And I understand we're expecting Florida to bounce back, which is fair. But everyone on Florida, a year older doesn't mean you're better. Everyone on Florida, year older means you're expecting a tiny bit of diminishing returns, whereas you've got this playoff experience for all your young halves, your young savers. I think we're going to see these teams on collision course for a while. That Dahlene looked awesome, right? Yeah.

Till the OT. Yeah, he made that mistake. Great player? Jack Quinn, I saw the last two games. He looked really good. Obviously, Benson was all over. at the coming out party of this playoffs, being the rat. Like there's a lot of really good players on these two teams.

The tough one is for talk. No goals, no points in seven games, minus eight on the series. I looked. His scoring chance generation was good, but I didn't watch a ton of like the whole series end to end. And I wanted to ask, Brett, like, what do you do here? Because he's asking for 10 plus.

Well, that's, because I like the player. And at eight, I think it's done. But there's no one going to free agency. And somebody's going to give them way too much money. and like, okay, so the underlying data said he created some chances, but he's goose eggs. Like, how do you sift through all that?

Well, you sift through it. It's a complicated business because you're Buffalo, which is, right, which is Winnipeg, which is, sure, letting guys go once you got him there and the guys that like being there is something you shouldn't be doing. Harder to pay him all that money when he didn't produce for you, underlying whatever BS. The playoffs are about results, right?

Yeah, Montreal's moving on. They have nine or seven shots against Tampa game seven. Point being, who gives a shit? Accomplish it. There's no style points. Yeah. So I didn't notice him be impactful enough

where you have to be desperate to pay him, but I can see why they would still pay him. And I don't know enough about, the cap situation for for the sabers either you know what I mean they got to pay Benson and a few other guys some of their use come off like I think Stanley and Shan but most of their top guys they've got it they're all their good players are locked in

at good minus the you guys yeah really good like tage not a lot of money like Rasmus signed in power is locked long term like bow and byrm they got another year yeah they're in a good spot and Josh Norris Josh Norris is just a hair under eight Tage Thompson 7.1, Ryan McLeod, three more years at five million. Zucker, one more year. They got Greenway at $4 million for another year.

I think they've got the room. They just signed. It's just a question of like, if you are going to commit the term and the dollars at commands, okay, is that smart money or is that just keeping the band together? He had 33 goals. He had 36 last year. I think you have to pay them. I think you do too.

And you hope that the ask. doesn't get too crazy. Well, that's just, that's just it. I'm not paying him 12 and a half. Sorry. Yeah. Like, can we get to nine and a half? Let's get it done. It just would, like, the narrative is so easy. Like, if he'd scored the O.T. winner or one of the goals last night that helped them win, like, it's done. Like, signed the paper. And it's like, well, what is he looking for? Because you do make a good point about the fact that there aren't.

Are we, we're good. Yeah. Um, what was I going to say? I lost my train of thought. Tuck. Oh, there aren't many free. agents. No. Like he, it might not be up to the sabers. It's like Mason, Marchman, him, Bobby McMahon. Those are going to be like your best three fours because I think Melkens not. It's getting to Pittsburgh retired, it seems like, right? Yeah. Yeah. Names like that don't matter. He's, honestly, he's got to be talking with his agents and his agents going, are you stupid? We can't take a deal to stay in Buffalo. But he's got to do what's

right for him too, because I do think he likes it. It's going. close to home. The team's good. Blah, blah, blah. Bob's your uncle. Like, imagine if you're the cave of the crop, what's you getting out there? 10. Well, it's a lot of money. I mean, that's the number we've heard Florida. You think it's just 10 with all?

And it's just the tough part is that you look at like Tage and him and one guy's way younger and way better and he's making 7.1. But this is inflation. The cap's going up. That's tough. Things get more expensive. Because he's not the best player, but he's a really good player. And he didn't impact the series as much as you wanted.

But you're better with them. To your point, so you can go find other free agents that really want to go to Buffalo necessarily. And what else do you have in the system? I don't know if you've got guys. Most of the guys have arrived, yeah. I mean, Heleneas looked really fucking good. I don't know that we know that mostly arrived. I just mean, like, you've been picked, you're not going to be in the business of picking the top 10 anymore.

And a lot of the guys you have taken high have arrived. Like Calanias, I think was the national draft here at Dino. Does that sound right? Yeah, he's 20. Yeah, so two drafts ago. Um, I'm sure there's another kid or two that could be there, but they're kind of coming out of this thing. And yeah, he's kind of the youngest, at least as far as forwards. They've got some, some younger D, but as far as forwards. Well, and one of the issues is back to, well, you're not attracting free agents. So you don't sign him and next year you need someone who's going there. You're going to overpay to get get get them.

Yeah. And again, we just need to know more about their system because maybe they do have guys knocking at the door. or maybe you think you can get Mason Marchman at half price on half the term and be like, the kids are taking this guy's slot in two years anyway. Like, that's it and Quinn aren't going away. They're getting better. I don't think they have to, they're not in a spot where they need to pay them or they're screwed.

I also don't know that Buffalo is a, I know Mr. Pagula can afford it, but I don't know that they're a cap team. Well, if they can make the playoffs like this, they might be, but yeah. You know what I mean? Like, the corporate money in Buffalo for that organization is not huge.

No. Like there's, as far as tuck, though, he had seven points in six games last round. And if you go back to last round for Tampa, Montreal did a pretty good job of keying on Nikita Kutrov. Akutrov had some, he had more than zero, but he was neutralized in a good chunk of that series.

And they just, this round they did it to Alex, Tuck. How old's tuck, 29, 30? He 30. Yeah. I feel like you have to just kind of look past what happened here the last 10 days and see what this guy has meant to the team, what he means to the team.

He wants to be there. He's scored 30 or more in three of the last four years. I just, I think you have to kind of just. We're assuming he wants to be there, though, right? Yeah, assuming he wants to be there. And again, like there's at a certain number, you just say, no, that's too much. Yeah. And we don't know what that is where there are internal measures on him?

What's his number where he's like, I won't go below that? There's probably lots of room. to make a fit. But if he wants an absolute smash hit Max money last time I'm a free agent, huge term deal, you might have to go to market to get it. It's very simple for us to say he should stay and they should sign him. And I think there's a good likelihood they will. But he is a free agent.

It's not up to the Buffalo Sabres. Right. It's irrelevant what the Sabres sink. It's what Tuck wants. Maybe they go to July 1. All over anything. Carolina wants them for 15. See ya.

right I know I know like a team like Evanston would love that guy to come loose because that's a guy you can slide into your top six that helps you and there just aren't many of those like maybe Bobby McMahon is the top six guy in free agency but after that I just don't see anyone in this free agent class

that can actually if you're a team trying to improve your top six there's not much for options like he's probably going to get overpaid just by lack of you know the shelves are empty he's one of the only things in the whole store exactly that's why it's why it's would be interesting to see what other teams are thinking about.

I don't even know who's got room for. Everyone's got the cap space, maybe not 10, but like the caps up nine and a half million from last year. Like every team, even if you're a capped out, it's got nine and a half. Now maybe you've got extensions kicking in that,

but we aren't in the age where it's like, well, we gotta dump some bad money and I'll give you a pick to take a bad contract like that. 10 million a year is making everything go away, all your problem contracts. Like, it's just every year, it's a smaller percentage of what and one year less to pay them. It's crazy to see what the numbers are going to be on some of these guys. I know.

I know. I'm 17 and 17.5. Like, what's, if Quinn Hughes signs an extension this summer, does he come in at the same number? Connor and Austin are both have new deals coming in 28, 29, or those 20 plus? Like, it's, we're skyrocketing cap here. Don't, his new deal kicks in. he's just, he's 6.95. I think they have 12 million in cap space.

Benson is, Benson's coming out and conversely, he's in a great spot to negotiate for a new contract, 21 years of age. He was tremendous. Well, they've got guys signed that are big time contributors for good money. And I'm guessing they'll give Benson.

Yeah. Yeah. And look, if Alex Tuck wants $80 million, you might just say, you know what? Internally, we can replace them. But if it,

It's, okay, I'll do 35 over four years. Okay, let's do it. Like, I could, it is that sort of, you know, I don't think you'll want to pay Alex tuck till he's 37. I don't, but that's the situation you're in. Yeah, there's a lot of things that you never want to do and you're signing things. You know, the question you can ask yourself as well is, well, is he the guy that's going to get us over the hump?

Like, is he a piece that we can't get to where we are? Yeah. Can you add a tuck at the deadline? Like, what's the difference between, here's an example for you. like Alex Tuck and Blake Coleman. Is it a huge gap? I would not comparable player. You'd rather have Tuck,

but Tuck's going to make, uh, like more than double. And obviously Coleman's only got one year left. Coleman's a better defender. Tuck's going to score more like, not sure that's a great comp. I know what you're saying.

I just mean like if you, if you didn't resign him, who could you go get at the deadline? You're not going to go with nothing if he leaves. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And you can replace him at the deadline or you go in free agency and you'd

talk to a Marchman or a Bobby McMatters. It's a tough time to talk because I just remember those games against Tampa Bay down the stretch in the regular season. Like he was an inspirational player. Like he was in the mix. Yeah. Scores like scoring big goals. But he just went ice cold. Also

are you hurt? Like is there something else that's attributing to that? Yeah, but I'm not taking away. It's just again, I go back to it. It's not up to the sabers. Yeah. It's the balls on his court at this point. But he's not up to the sabers. Yeah. He's been there five. years. Is it five now?

well I want to stay close to home well I think he's got almost everything you can want minus the good weather and the taxes right like the other thing clearly ascending it's close to home I don't know that there's a better team to tie your wagon to for the next four to six years like maybe Montreal but like it's there's a lot of boxes check that I think that I'm a Buffalo and my heart goes out to the city. I don't disagree with you,

but I don't think any of these teams are like Ucapeka and Lion and who is the other guy? Comrie? No, they had one other guy playing net. I'm going, do we have a? Yeah, is there a tandem? Okay, can we make it?

But I'm babbling. because it's hard to December 5th, sell everyone. Yeah. Now you have a hot run, and I think they do have a good culture going on. Prior to December 5th, Lindy Ruff, what the F are you doing? Fire him.

Fire his F, right? Like, it was always going to turn, and they were so young, but it happened like on the drop of the... And I guess what I, if Toronto commits the playoffs this year, Buffalo can miss next year. You get any team I think can miss.

You get injuries to the wrong guys, any team missed. I don't know that I think Dahlene's awesome. Powers looked like he was finding something. The playoffs got his Amosian Byron. They have a D. I love their D. I don't dislike.

But are they, I think they are moving in the right direction. But I think that that conference and the division stuff. That's tough, man. I don't know that, like, there's, I don't think anyone's a lock. Like, you see Florida wins two cups and then it's like, oh, yeah, well, we're just going to take 82 Barkov games away from you, 50 Kachachs, 30 Lundells, 30 Marshan, and you know, yeah, well, you sucked. Any team's bottom end is missing in this league.

I think that's how tight the parity is. And I think most teams, if everything goes right and you get a hot goal, you could probably sneak into a wildcard. But I don't know that there's better spots than what we just saw. between Buffalo and Montreal with their age because guys are getting better. Like Zach Benz is not getting worse. What's wrong with Philly?

Uh, yeah. Like I still think they, their positional needs are greater. I, I don't think Philly was great. I think Philly was in the right division and snuck in. I don't know that they're a lot to get in. I like Buffalo's and Montreal's roster. I honestly,

I think it's somewhere in the middle. I don't know that like I agree with you. Obviously it looks like Buffalo, because it was to your point, Red, we were not having this conversation in November, how great a spot it was going to be in Buffalo. It was another year of disaster there. He's been there five years.

You have another 30 goal season. You're 6, 4, 2, 20. What are what's out there? Los Angeles would like somebody to play with Panorama. I just, it's the ball's in his court. And I don't know, I don't know that I see Buffalo at this point, as good as, as good as they've been. are they going to be a win away from the final four again next year?

Like, are they a lock to win around? I don't know who you'd pick ahead of them. Like, I think much, when you look at their best players and their ages, who's getting worse? Their entire core, I think is getting better. Like, it'd be tough to find a guy in the back nine there.
