Starting point is 00:00:00 We had Steinberg on yesterday. We were kind of looking. Well, it's 0.4, 15 to go to Anahe, 6, Vegas 7, Carolina, 8, who's this like 0.9? Is this good double digits? Pat kind of thought yesterday, Vegas. Vegas feels like a good spot. Now, Pinder, you kind of thought Yeah, I said last night. I mean, it wasn't ironclad, but you knew they had a, oh, you weren't going to stake your life on it? No, I definitely wasn't. I did not go. put a mortgage payment on the flames. It's what I always complain about. You're walking the fence again, both sides of your mouth.
Starting point is 00:00:39 They played them well on Saturday. You knew they'd be without cutter goche. That's a good time to play the ducks again, paling to a lesser extent. The caveat was going to be the stall, who I thought was really good last night. But they skated with them for 40 minutes and special teams let them down. And they still could have got better goaltending and checked the box last night and not front. Good for them. I felt like it was entertaining, actually. The goaltending let them down, did you say?
Starting point is 00:01:07 On Saturday, I thought that Wolf would have wanted the two third period goals back. And he finally had a good third. You got to remember the two Seattle games, he gets blown doors off early in the first, then again in the third, then again in the third against Anheim. That's his best third period of the year by and mile. I just wanted to clarify. Yeah. We've been critical of the goal tend to general. Yeah. And then last night, you know, the old start on top. time. I thought they had a good start. Yeah. They.
Starting point is 00:01:34 This was this, this is the kind of effort, 60 minute thing that we were kind of used to seeing over the last couple of years. Regardless of what the roster looked like, you were getting these types of, of performances for sure. And credit to credit to the guys, credit to husk, credit to some of it. Because I felt like it was, the ducks were not great even in winning a few nights ago. I thought they'd be back on, you know, back on their horse a little bit. Again, I was not.
Starting point is 00:02:00 not super impressed with the docks. They need D. I mean, shots at that, at one point there were 22 to 8 for the flames. And sometimes that's misleading, but the flames were carrying the play. They, they were full marks on everything last night. I, I don't, I thought the flames played harder and better.
Starting point is 00:02:16 I thought it was an entertaining game. And yet I still found myself when the ducks got the puck moving offensively, going, holy shit, there's some talent there. Yeah. These guys can zip it. Even when it was three, two flames late, you're like, they're going to need a couple big wolf saves. And it turns out they hit the empty.
Starting point is 00:02:30 and whatever, but like it just, you cannot feel safe at any moment because there's such a talent gap. Like this team can't take shifts off. This is your Huska Blueprint. This is what we expected. And we didn't get for the first four games. And people were freaking out. And it's like if they'd have lost three to two or four to two last night and
Starting point is 00:02:49 you watched that effort, you'd be like, yeah, I'll give me another ethical loss. This is great. Yeah. A couple things like Kevin Ball has been awesome. He's been great. He's been really good. Who's this? trainer. I need that trainer. That's a good trainer.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Yeah, I think they mentioned on the broadcast that he stuck in town and worked out a ton in the summer, which is great. Really? Well, no, I made that to someone else who's talking about it. Because he did go back to Mistokas. Yeah, they were talking about it on the broadcast, I think. Yeah. But either way, like, that's a really nice, you needed that. Because we've sort of, it's looked like in the first four or five games, kids that aren't ready and vets that aren't that good. And now it's like, okay, White Cloud's settling in, balls a better version than we've ever seen, albeit a tiny sample. Like that's something you can get excited about.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Possesal at center. Like it has been a long time since we've seen him play with this kind of path and with all the injuries, it makes sense. But we were worried about that extension that kicked in this year. And if he can play the middle of the ice with that kind of pace and tenacity, obviously the big caveat's the same one with, you know, Anzik and others.
Starting point is 00:03:49 It's injuries, injuries, injuries. But that's a nice find. Like Huska identified that early. We're going to put him in the middle. And all of a sudden him with gridding on one wing and strome on the other, they're creating chances oh you're really all over huska right now hey way to go huska no i mean we've been on them for the defense blender there's but that i don't think anyone had him penciled in his third line center after their first three games and he's been good yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:04:13 no complaints small sample and he hasn't been good what i enjoyed yesterday was just that they were they seemed engaged big time instead of flat coronado again just incredibly tenacious on the four check creating chances shooting the puck a tonne credibly The thing I liked about Coronado, and I kind of brought it up yesterday, they was making plays. It's late in the game, and I could go back and look, I guess. I probably should have jotted down, whether it was three, two, or four two at the time. But it's late in the game. And he gets into it with Minchikov in front of the net.
Starting point is 00:04:47 And kind of he takes, he goes to the net, he takes a shot and turns around and gives one right back to a guy who's much bigger and stronger. And I feel like ordinarily he's not going to do that. He's going to shy away from that. It's like, well, how much time's left on the clock we can just get out of here. But it was, it was instinctual. He went kind of right back. Now we're talking about it. It's not a lot.
Starting point is 00:05:06 They're not dropping the gloves and stuff. But for that guy who's been a little bit perimeter has a, we've seen him, we've seen him drop the gloves. We've seen him chip away at some guys. I've been, I've been impressed with with what I've seen because I've kind of put him in that spot. If other guys can do the dirty work and the lifting, he's got a great shot and he can get it away. But I've, I've liked a little bit. of his game. He's probably been their best forward.
Starting point is 00:05:31 I'm just looking. I don't know that you could say like, look, tiny sample, obviously the huge asterisk. And it's a one in five team. And they were dog shit for the first, you know, three of the first four games.
Starting point is 00:05:41 But like Coronado, you wanted to see last year he fought it a bit. He's looked a lot. Like I've really, I've liked this game, ball the same thing. You needed some of those developments. Klapka again.
Starting point is 00:05:55 He's intriguing. Does you say it all the time, right? When you're somewhat limited, you've got to find a way to get your fingerprints on the game. Be impactful, do something to get in there. He's been a part of all these games. He's on that,
Starting point is 00:06:09 I like the block shots. Again, I don't know how disheartening it was in game one or down. And in Seattle, I think it is disheartening when you give up so many early. but was this not the exact? This is what we thought we'd say. Yeah. And I feel like we're going to see it again. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:35 And will it be a perfect season? Absolutely not. They're still dead last. Yeah. Well, and there's still, you can tell the offensive maybe isn't as bad as the first four games, but it's not going to be a strength putting up goals. No, they were dead last last year.
Starting point is 00:06:52 It's just going to be work ethic and goaltending. And if the goal is supposed, does what he's supposed to do, they'll have ethical losses. I like Castania and the tiny sample and SUNY for as long as you're going to put up points, they're not going to send them anywhere. I don't give a, that's all part of it too.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Have kids that are supposed to be excited and be playing and give them a chance. And I still go back to when they traded Iggy. Nobody wanted Iggy to leave Calgary, but it's not a, you have to turn it over and let the kids play. Like there's too many other teams in the league where you go, these kids are pretty good. We don't expect, I don't know what the highest, the high watermark is for some of these guys,
Starting point is 00:07:32 but you have to find out and that's what they're going to do. Did what are your thoughts on SUNY have? You know, there's three games. He's got three points. You can shoot at the ton, but you wondered, okay, is he going to top out as a HL score or is this going to be an NHL piece? I was, last night I was watching, I was thinking about you and I sitting in Penticton, watching him for the first time as he was shooting the puck. She's, that's a pretty, guys got a pretty good shot.
Starting point is 00:07:54 Is that an HL guy? can you do it at the next level? And we've seen it on the number like two nights ago, the one in Titan and last night. He can shoot it. I'm with you. I don't know what the scenario would be where you have to send them back down. The only, I guess, scenario is because he doesn't need waivers. He might be victim to that.
Starting point is 00:08:13 But he's one of your best goal scores right now. And he's young. This is exactly what you want. You want a guy who's young that you need to develop to get key minutes. He's getting that and is producing with them. So it's perfect. Yeah, I don't see any scenario where he would be going down. Yeah, like if you had Hansick and Hubert O'Healthy, he's probably not up.
Starting point is 00:08:33 But now that you've seen it, it's the thing that you suck at the most, which is, you know, getting creating offense. So I think he's bought himself a nice amount of time here in the NHL. And you know what? Like he's a rookie. You see these guys hit the midseason lull. I remember Sean Monaghan midyear through his rookie year. You know, Zane Perak, they wanted to give a breather to. And like, he might need.
Starting point is 00:08:55 he might go cold and you need a little reset. But what he's doing right now, like he's literally playing with Coronado and Frost. That's your de facto top line offensively. I don't think you're wrong, but I gave you the stink guy because I think it's BS if he has to sit because Hubertos back. It's exactly what we don't need is to see Huberto play
Starting point is 00:09:14 and then take Sunni up out. Like it goes against all. Yeah. I agree with you. It'll probably happen, but I don't agree with the process. Like just because things are done this way, doesn't make it right.
Starting point is 00:09:27 And you would probably park Simplica on before that happened. We'll see. But it's just there just aren't. It's not like you're looking at a team. You're like, well, they're really good at scoring, but we need some blue color guys. So we'll take Sunavo. Like he's doing the thing that they suck at.
Starting point is 00:09:40 That's a nice fine. Yeah. And to be fair, in fairness to him, it's not just the shot. There's some of the little plays that he's making. He's getting, you're seeing more with that confidence as it grows. And you saw a little bit of that again last night. I love seeing Sharon Govich get the empty netters. We always get to the end of the year.
Starting point is 00:09:58 So he had 15, he had 17 goals. How the hell did it? Okay. Well, it was these count. Well, you've always said it. You've been a big advocate for the empty net goal. If only the, the Kings to Springs ago took that to heart. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:12 They all count. And not, is he a plus one on this team? Like that, I know it's not a perfect step. I don't think. And plus minus is the empty. Yes. But I think the. the end of the hood stuff looks okay from him i don't he's not a perfect player but he hasn't been
Starting point is 00:10:28 buried who's been a perfect player this no one on this very many and they aren't going to be again we're plus one it's great to it's you give them credit for their effort last night and there's some good stuff that's happened and you don't pile on them because they were terrible before this because this is the situation we're in but to just proclaim guys is great players because of three points for Sunni. Yeah, that's, that's great. What's that mean over the long haul? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Kevin Barr is very long. The last couple of games. All star? Who's voting? No, it's all right. We're grading on the curve here. No question. It's just one of those weird things where it's like,
Starting point is 00:11:10 oh, we lost nine nothing and this guy was even. You're like, how? What if we, but it doesn't mean it's on. Yeah. Thoughts and you may not have any, because I don't know that I necessarily do either, but I kind of at some point during the game,
Starting point is 00:11:22 you kind of forget about Gridden. It's like there's Castania and oh yeah, soon you have you. You think about the young players. And it's well, yeah, Gridden is still one of those guys. And last night, 14 minutes,
Starting point is 00:11:35 16 seconds of ice. He had a minute and a half on the power play, two shots. He was a plus one. You see flashes. Yeah, like I'm not trying to throw a guy. But Young and still has to go.
Starting point is 00:11:48 his way very much. Yeah, I agree with that. And look, like the flashes are there because and you're like, wow, like, geez, that's a, that's a nice play. And then there's one a period maybe. So the difference between a 20 year old grid and a guy that's in his prime is someone that can bring that more than, you know, two, three shifts a game. Yeah. So why they got to play. And sometimes it's, you know, gets rid of the puck a little too early. Hang on to it there. Well, you got to move it quicker, but he's still, uh, He's still a work in progress. He feels like correct to me because you can see the high IQ plays, but you can also see they're trying stuff that doesn't work or it's like, well, that wasn't the right time for that. This is the figure out what works in the NHL year for these guys. They don't have the polish yet, Dean.
Starting point is 00:12:34 Right. The Pollish out. Like the correct pass late where he banks it out of the corner and it sets up like a perfect look. You're like, I don't know how many guys see that. And maybe he's just dumping it, but I'm going to give him credit because you'll, looked at his first two passing options are covered.
Starting point is 00:12:50 You're like, oh boy, there's someone right on him here. Back to the corner, wide open look from the slot. And I don't know if those all got a piece or they missed or hit the crossbar, but great looking tight. It's the flashes. They give you hope. Did you ever have somebody as you're working the point retro? Now, you're a right shot.
Starting point is 00:13:07 So you'd be kind of at the same spot where, uh, where Nemich was, where a guy's right on you. You maybe make a pass to your winger, which puts him at a bad spot. And he's like, screw you. He gives it right. back to you and then you're in a tough spot and then somebody takes it from you and goes all the way down and puts it in the net is that ever ring any bells or i've tried to catch paul korea in a situation like that how they're going not well no i had the jump on him yeah i try to remember who who was the winger because nemitz passes it's like oh that's tough pass oh he gave it right back to even tougher and uh there goes seneca Yeah, it was Seneca that ended up with the break, I thought.
Starting point is 00:13:49 Yeah, but look. That's why you're playing them. I have no, I don't really have a problem with it because I think he was got to try. That puck came back to him, but these guys, I'm not in that situation. Sometimes these guys make plays out of that stuff. Like that's how talented some of these guys are. Like there were little passes that Anaheim made and you watch other games and I'm not taking a shot at the flames. I didn't notice it so much with them.
Starting point is 00:14:16 But there are teams that make plays inside of three feet with three guys. Like it's touch, touch, touch. Like sometimes. So even the things that we look at and go, well, that's a dumb play, they believe they can make them. Yeah. If you're, if you're, let's say, like, it would be a good example. It's like you're Dallas or Colorado. You're like, no, no.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Like, Shimon, you can't do that. Like, what do you? This is the exact situation. You can try it and learn. Did it work? Yeah, you could learn. handle the puck. Do I need to be firmer? Do I take the body? Like, this is why he's not on a contender. This is why you go and move late, late picks in the first round to go get him because there's
Starting point is 00:14:57 tons of talent and he's got to figure it out. He's not there yet. I'm happy for the individual. Sorry, Rick, go ahead. Those seems to be a common theme. Yeah. I was just going to say, I'm happy for the individuals because if you, you look at those two Seattle games, it was like, Jesus, and then they play Colorado and you're going to get rolled up there. A lot of teams are going to get rolled up by now. But they were starting to play better. And you hear it's the whole thing. When you're winning a bunch and you start playing more loose and not as good, you're going to start losing. When you're losing and you start playing better, they deserve to win that one last night. And I don't know how many there's going to be where they have, they've outshot a team.
Starting point is 00:15:35 They've outworked a team. Maybe you've had the better number of chances, quality in that, deserve to win and actually win. Because there's going to be a lot of nights where the skill on the other side may just bail them out with a bad balance or a power play goal or something. To get a win after five straight and you wonder, when is this ever, because they were probably doing the same thing. Jesus, so what? Is it eight? Is it nine? When are we getting our first win? They deserved it and they got it. So they get to feel good about things for at least a couple of days because the number one thing we've talked about in terms of them, just the mentality is you got to find a way to keep it light. And that's hard when you're losing. And I think,
Starting point is 00:16:14 it would be worse when you are playing well enough to win and still losing. Enjoy it. You earned it. You've been working hard to get it. It's great. Don't need too many. You know, don't need to go on streaks here.
Starting point is 00:16:29 Settled off. Six in a row. Don't need to be doing that. But, uh, that no one's going to be asking, geez, your longest in franchise history. Oh, it's double digit loss. Oh, you can get away from that bullshit for a little bit.
Starting point is 00:16:42 The hardest working team won last night. like the team that wanted it more. And Anaheim's effort was fine, but the flames were determined to not lose and overcame their skill deficit to do so. They looked like they cared and wanted it. They were excited to have it. When there was puck battles at 2-2 or 3-2,
Starting point is 00:17:00 who wanted it more? Like mostly the flames. That's the tip of the cap to them.
