Friday is Hawaiian shirt day. So, you know, if you want to, go ahead and wear a Hawaiian shirt and jeans. It's also game day, dude. Oh, well, yesterday was game day. Yeah, the dump is hosting the Ticats. Bo Levi Mitchell, who you told was selfish. and really trying to go for himself. I didn't say selfish. I said, I'm a loser. No, no, I didn't. It wasn't.

It was fantasy football. We had the chat going. So we've got Bo Levi Mitchell in our fantasy football draft, the media hacks league, because he was doing a show on the station at the time. We had some other folks in there.

and within minutes of the Grey Cup ending on a O'Levi Mitchell interception, Rhett jumps in the chat and says, Hey, Bo, you really blew it going for the glory there at the end. Or it was something. I don't know if he said, hey, Bo. I just think he said, look at. Oh, look at all the glory.

And I don't know if you remember that he was in the chat, or if it was just one of those things. You know what, Rhett's going to tell you how it is, how he sees it. He's not going to sugarcoat shit. It's weird because people could pick on me for losing three cups. It's fair game, but as soon as I take a jab. It was fresh, though. Too far.

It was fresh. He would have still been on the field. Oh, yeah. Got him back to his phone. I did. I thought it was hilarious at the time. I thought I was really on to something. Yeah.

It was one weekend and then the next weekend was, was in Sask. Oh, do you have the line up there, Jackie Boy? Before I start to blathering away. How about something altogether different?

The whoop-dy-do, East or all the music fast. Yeah, Dave Matthews cover band. That's, they're leading off. Oh, never been. The classic ring. Steinberg's flying in for that. Yeah. For sure.

Is it a funk nights? Is it a one day? I don't know. Like did it start today? Boy, there's a lot of venues here. Well, it's a street fest, really. Davian Goliath? The brass machine.

Now, before you show it there, Jack, now when I was young, teenager, high school years, the summer, a lot of it revolved around Country Fest weekend back home. Who's going, where are we going, the whole thing?

Then I got my first radio gig, country music station. All of a sudden, I'm backstage. I'm doing the interviews. I'm bringing them out. I'm like, hey, let's get off your feet for a whole whoopty do here, you know, whoever it is. And so it was big, but then, you know, things move on. You move away. You don't get back as much.

And I don't know, because COVID and everything, it kind of, I don't know if it looks like it was going to be shut down. You just not going to be able to do this anymore. Dang. Well, take a look. I think sometimes money has an influence in people's decisions. Probably does, rightfully so. And if you're going to spend money, spend it on quality,

people like that. Yeah. I would love to see George one more time. I've only seen them once. Out of all the country concerts I saw during my stupid radio days, saw George once, and it was here in Calgary at the Dome. Oh, boo. Not ideal, yeah.

I think she was at the AT&T stadium show and also got to a Stapleton straight show, which I think got rained out. And people were very disappointed. I think George played like two or three songs. Yeah. It's not your fault. It's not your fault.

Today is the final day of media rounds. They're doing all the media stuff. They're getting into it with the media today. And I had kind of forgotten about something and I guess it's on me because I, you know, my give a shit meter goes up and down. today Bill Daly and John, John, no, Gary Bettman are going to be speaking with the assembled media. As will Marty Walsh, the NHLPA executive director. So they're all getting together.

They're playing nice these days. They do joint press conferences and things. That's kind of a change of pace from what we're in. Because we were in Toronto for some event, right? What was that? And they did. We were out for the draft and there was a sports marketing conference and Gary and Marty Walsh. They did a co-hosted hot stove with David Amber,

who looks like he could bench, Press a Buick. Yeah, he's in phenomenal shape. Yeah, phenomenal. I think he's actually playing lineback for the time. Does he have legs, though? Yeah. Upper body guy, one of those upper body guys.

Or is he's, his calling card is upper body, but he hasn't gone full Steinberg. Well, you don't go full Steinberg. It's been a little legs, dude. Congrats, by the way, Patty. Oh, sure. Of the topics that they will be

The NHL Four Nations face-off will feature international tournament play between NHL players from Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States. It will take place in February of 2025 in two North American cities, one in Canada and one in the United States.

The NHL All-Star weekend will not be held in the 24-25 season. Dang. The four nations face-off will consist of a total of seven games played over a nine-day period from Feb 12 to Feb 20, along with a pair of designated training practice days. How many games did that again?

Seven total, over a nine day period. So they might have to do a round robin. And then you would cede and play your finals. Yeah. Can't wait for the mid-season tournament. That's going to be awesome. Well, it's going to be a year ahead of the Olympics. And honestly, we've never seen McDavid and Crosby on the same team.

And we've never had like Austin Matthews and Patty Kee on the same team. I think the best. rivalry in sport could it have been for the last 10 years Canada, USA and hockey. We just haven't had it. It's too bad. Yeah, unless the U.S. would have just been kicking the shit out of us for the last decade. But would they have our attention? Hell yeah.

Okay. Yeah. Right? Like, that's a rivalry. You don't go 10 and O and it's a rivalry. You got to lose some. What if you go 0 and 10? Then you want to beat those MFers really bad.

Okay. But that would suggest that maybe. No, no. Then you have a summit. That's true. You'd have a summit and everyone would be hand-wringing. The problem is the people that summit, they kind of all got shit-canned.

But that leads to a staggering amount of negativity when somebody, disagrees with your positivity. So then when you spin it back, you're, you're overly negative about their opinion on things. But you just see it as you being positive in favor of your opinion. I'm struggling with that. There's a lot of words there. That's a lot.

And I'm like, oh, okay, well, I'm sorry. And they didn't really appreciate the tone of my sorry. Or I said, okay, no. and they didn't like me using the word noted. And, you know, it was someone that had been yelled at and then got on the plane and started yelling at people there. That's how things worked back then. It was a lot of yelling. It just, it all kind of.

I'm just like, this is hilarious. Like, this was a team I grew up cheering for. And now I'm like, this is the most toxic workplace I've ever been in. And I've worked with Dean for 10 years. Like, I got yelled at. So now you're getting yelled at. That's no work. Well, no, I got a downhill.

She goes downhill. You're going to get yelled at. Yeah. Okay. Well, I'm making a lot of money here. So you probably should be yelling at me. Yeah. You should be held to account.

I've definitely been going nine to five. I'm not working any extra hours with my 115 days on the road this year. Yeah. Matt has tried. Darcy Tucker's brother wanted to hit ping. I don't think it was Tucker's brother. It was not. Yeah.

You know, like a little guy that's really wiry, but all of a sudden's like, this guy was a bobcat. crap um no like a big dude who you just don't don't look at the wrong way certainly don't don't say a crossword uh comes over and a cute it's a geez i could probably use a shower hey something to this effect when's the last time you've seen a shower no laugh dead pan at all i was all right uh that was a joke i'm sorry why don't i get you a beer and then you did

I got to go. And you came back and you drank before a cheers or you didn't cheers when he held the glass up. And he wanted to know just what the situation was where you were not in a spot to cheers the table. I think we're standing. So I don't know that's it. Maybe it was. No, you're standing. It was one of those barrel, barrel things.

But at that point, to your credit, you did take your leave and did not return. Yeah, it was a, I'm going to get punched in the face. We can't build this bridge. He's wise. No, he's wise. Two different worlds. Yeah.

And they walked in and kind of, hmm, that's all I got beer, where they had to make a run to the liquor store to go get some whiskey. Yeah, and they just lost in heartbreaking fashion.

It was quite chippy between the city and the country and, uh, they needed some fighting juice. So it was like, there's just, just beer in here? Well, it's a brewery. Yeah. Hmm. All right. Get an Uber. Then so they had the, uh, the bottle sitting outside so they could have a little nip. But hey, to each their own.

Uh, yeah, so we're, uh, we're getting ready for the Four Nations face. So I'm very excited for it. I tell we're very excited. Marty Walsh, he'll be, uh, tell us stories. What else is on their agenda besides? I think we're going to get a Utah question or two for sure, but I don't know that there's any mammoth or Eddie? Is that what they're going to ask?

It's going to be Utah and we're all going to be disappointed. Now our next, our, our guest here, he would have attended plenty of these. They happen draft weekend. They happen at the All-Star weekend. They have right before the event, Gary Bettman and Bill Daly, who I guess is, you know, carries his bags. get some bottles of water and sets them up there, whatever Bill Bailey does.

Dregs has been at plenty of these. And I got to ask you, drags. Now, because there is there still an element where there's some kind of morbid humor, just kind of, because it's so painful. And watching Betman, it's like he's spinning plates on sticks. Like he's a lawyer. He's done this forever.

We're very excited about the Arizona market. To talk forever and say nothing is his greatest skill. Is there any part of it that you draw and like some joy or some pleasure from or is it just all painful? Yeah, I wouldn't say there's pleasure or entertainment attached to it. I wouldn't also say that it's painful. And I do feel like I do have to defend the deputy commissioner of the NIH. Oh, okay. Wow.

Because the truth is, as most deputy commissioners, prime ministers, whatever, they do most of the work. does most of the work. Yeah, it was always a thing because we would have our table set up at the draft and Gary would come out to talk to Kerr and I. And I would just step aside. It was Kerr's thing. I was very happy to let Kerr do it. Gary's hair. It was always the thing about because there's TV cameras everywhere and he's going up on the podium. He's going to be up there all night. You can't, you have a little flyer, you know, a little kind of an alfalfa thing going. on, it's no good. And all we had was like headset microphones.

So it was either hold the headset like this because he was not going to put it on. There was just, that was not going to happen. Do we have a stick mic? Then how are you going to hear that sort of thing? So we learned over the course of time. Gary can't use the headset, needs a stick. I can tell you that one of the more surprising experiences

that I've had, more I witnessed with the commissioner, was again several years ago. and they used to have the Board of Governors meetings at Spanish Bay, right? So, you know, guys like me was one of the few times where it played Pebble Beach, spyglass, Spanish Bay, like top golf courses in North America. And I'm up early. I'm out for a walk. We'd stay at the Inn at Spanish Bay.

It was beautiful. It's part of the media entourage. And I'm up early walking along the ocean. And then I look up and I'm like, it's a guy kind of lumbering, but he's jogging. Like, he's doing his best coming down the beach and, It's more of a boardwalk than we. I don't know. I'm like, geez, that looks like Batman.

It cannot be Gary Bettman. It can't be. And then he gets closer. In fact, it was Commissioner Bettman with two braces on his knees. Really? Like legit Don Joy, like hardcore braces. Yeah. And he's out there just pounding it.

I was like, I don't know. Looks like an offensive tackle. I had any level of respect for the commission. Yeah. He is an imposing figure. Well, he's going to go. that far, but I mean, he puts in the work. He does.

Hey, no shit. Good honor for doing it. Now, out of, because just I'm thinking about that, you, I mean, you've had some, some great spots when you go to cover. What was the best one? And then the next day, we'd play Spyglass. And then the next day, Spanish Bay. And I'm, oh, by the way, I'm working. Right. Yeah, yeah. For sure. That's right up there from an NHL perspective. The men's world hockey championship is the boondoggle of all boondoggles because of the time change.

You know, you've got seven, eight, nine hour time change. You know, the first year I went, I got to think. back to where this was it. Well, I know it was in Prague. I mean, or Paris we've stayed, you know, like we were maybe 150 yards in the Eiffel Tower, stuff like that. So, yeah, I've had some fortunate trips, but those boondoggles are over. You may have noticed.

We don't, we don't do that much anymore. Weird. Yeah. Yeah, the industry is kind of grinding to a halt. Yeah, as we all sit in our friggin den. Exactly. We're all in our shitty little rooms that we can have in our house

where nothing else needs to happen. Damn, what else was I going to? Now, did you, I guess just talk, did you, how often did you do World Juniors? Because that's Christmas and that's away from family. Did you do that? Yeah, no, I've never had to do it. That's, you know, one of Bobby Max.

Yeah, I remember the Dregor Cafe, so that would have been, what, Worlds? Yeah, that was Men's Worlds. Yeah. But, no, Bob still does the World Juniors. In studio, though, right? I mean, I'm sure TSM would love to have him and James travel, but they don't bother doing that anymore.

It's more convenient, Bob, his grandchildren. So that in the draft, but that's the reason I've never gotten involved. And obviously, it would be wheelhouse for me. You know, I go to the Memorial Cup every year, at least for a few days, and cut my teeth in junior hockey back in the day. But, yeah, I've always enjoyed taking Christmas off and just kind of lounging around. It's awesome. Lazy.

Now, you mentioned junior hockey because you kind of lead me. me right into it because I wanted to ask you your uh your chronological journey it starts your tiny can you guys hear that you know what I think there's a bear in your house you know pretty close she's literally I didn't see if I can turn this maybe you can have a workout here boy there he is tiny Oh, I just want to see dad. When are you done talking to these dummies? No, well, somebody's clearly at the door.

So is it ball? Is it Frisbee? What gets Tiny going? Not much of anything, really, to be fair. She's not much of a, you know, you throw the ball or a stick or something like that. She'll chase it, but she's not bringing it back. So, nah, it's more of just a walk and just sniffing around the forest. That's about it.

So I was going to say, so junior hockey. Now, were you in Dauphin first or did you start in Brant? How did that go? We King's? No, no, I started in Yorkton, Saskatchew. Right. Yeah. GX-94.

GX-94 with the Yorkton Terriers and did a lot of senior hockey and stuff like that. A little bit of news covering. First ever, bro. Yorkshire Terriers. Let's go. Really? Who are you playing with? Blazers in Saskatoon.

How old? I was 15. Nice. Yeah, good times. That happened. back then you you could go to a jay game or a or a junior a game and you don't know what was going to happen

that night yeah yeah so then it's so it's yorkton you're doing weekings play by play you ship the tv that's where i kind of got to see it new of you obviously before that you're doing uh ckx then it's winnipeg covering the jets and then city tv launches

and where do you go edmonton or calgary edmonton yeah a channel remember that right with the craigs It's going to be great. So one of the most fabulous experiences, so, I mean, they were literally duct taping the wire in to try and get the Edmonton station going. And so I negotiate my contract. And, you know, basically it's a flat wash leaving Winnipeg, CKY to go to Edmonton.

But at the time, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment managed the broadcast rights, right? So A Channel had the Oilers, which was why I was going in the first place. And they were supposed to kick in another 25, 30 grand to my deal. So that was enough. Okay. You know, there's a platform. The Jets aren't in Winnipeg anymore. I might as well do what I can do to get back in the NHL.

Get there and thereby, and I'm like, okay, well, so do I invoice, you know, Moulson, whatever it was called? Or do I invoice A channel? What do I do? And they both look at me and they're like, well, no, they're paying. no, they're paying. So I ended up getting shafted by that. So you know what? It actually worked out. Okay. I shouldn't complain. I spent nine months. You have 30 grand of beer? How'd that end up? Yeah. Yeah. Well, it was so bad that so, I mean, because you're on TV, you have a clothing allowance or a clothing deal. So I spent nine months there and they owed me X number of thousands of dollars. It wasn't a lot.

save five grand for clothing. And I never got it. So I'm like, all right, well, again, you can just write me the check. It's no big deal. You know, in my last day is like July 15th or whatever. No, no, yeah, we're not going to do that. So I said, okay, no problem. Then my last day is tomorrow.

And it wasn't, but it was like they would, rather than pay me, they just caught me loose two weeks earlier, whatever it was. It was just insanity. But so the story I was quickly going to tell when they had the long, launch party, they had this big golf tent outside of A Channel Edmonton. And Jan Arden was there to put a concert on and the whole bit. And the power kept going out. She'd start a song and the lights would go out.

And the lights would stop. Like the power would go out. And she was there to present the concert so that they could launch it. Like A Channel would go on the air with a flip of the switch at like 11 p.m. Right. And power kept going out. Oh, my God. It's just, it's classic.

It really is. But yeah, because they launched Calgary at the same time, right? Wasn't that kind of how that worked, A channel involved? Yeah, there was a few of them, yeah. So, I mean, you were there, but you know that market. You've always kind of had ties to Edmonton. You know the, you're going back to the Kevin Low days and you've, so you can appreciate what this means. And now to watch what's happening there.

I mean, we said, Here we have some fun. Oh, that's terrible, whatever. But if they're not Canada's team, and we can debate that and there's no answer to that, this means an incredible amount to that city. It's like the riders in Regina, the Oilers to the city of Edmonton. Yeah. It's tough to match.

It sounds like a shot, but there was the Red Mile here and Canucks do their thing in 2011, but there's some, that oilers, that city is wound right tight for this. It is. And you guys can probably confirm this as well. It feels to me like Flames fans kind of obviously are around Calgary, and then they drift west. So you probably have a good number of Flames fans in a certain chunk of BC. Of course, there's Vancouver Canucks have it. I don't think there's as many Flames fans going east of Calgary than there are Oilers fans. I mean, that could be just dead nuts wrong.

I don't know. I just know because where I grew up, Landerberg, Saskatchewan is the home of Kelly Buckburger, right? Well, obviously, you know, it's a small town. So, you know, everybody cheered for Bucky when he was with the Oilers back in the day. So maybe that's why, you know, that the, the Oilers following still remains so strong in that part of the world. But, you know, I have buddies and buddies kids reaching out to me in the last week. you know, any chance you got an in on tickets.

It's just insane. So, yeah, I mean, it's important to the market. It's important to the organization. Every organization, that's why you're in it. Every general manager, every coach, every player, that's why you're in it. But I don't know that if Edmonton Windsor loses the Stanley Cup final to the Florida Panthers, we're going to feel differently of how they got there or, you know, what they have to do in their decision making moving forward to trying to.

successfully defend, et cetera. You know, that's just, it's one of those things. They put the building blocks in place and everything kind of fell into the puzzle that's been built. And here they are in the final. It's interesting you mentioned that because I know when we were, obviously, we do this every day. And as it was shaping up, it was like, guys, I don't like this.

They got L.A. and round one. I'd rather they had Vegas. And then maybe it's going to be Vancouver. This could be a soft march to the cup. I don't feel that way right now. They're full marks. And part of it is what they. They, what they did.

And part of it is what Dallas and Colorado and Vegas did not do. They do not deserve to be there. They just don't. Edmondson. Southpath or not, they deserve to be represented in the last. They're the team to do it. I got to tell you, man, I'm disappointed. It doesn't matter.

I'm not disappointed in the Dallas Stires. I pick Dallas to beat the Oilers in the Western Conference final. And for a myriad of reasons, they just couldn't do it. They couldn't establish their game plan. They couldn't find a way to protect Jake Ottinger better. Now, why is that? is that it has to be a combination, doesn't it, of Dallas not doing what they were supposed to, but Edmonton not allowing Dallas to do. I guess the one thing that I would say is, you know,

Edmonton had, what, 10 shots in game six, the deciding game. I mean, okay, you had the McDavid highlight goal to make it 1-0. The power clicks to make it 1-0-0-2-0. But 10 shots, they're not coming close to beating Florida if Florida maintains a similar respect defensively and structurally because Florida will do what is necessary to find a way to get to Stu Skinner in a fashion that the Dallas Stars just didn't seem capable.

We almost sort of said that was a feather in the cap of the Oilers to play that poorly and still win and close out a series. To go 15 plus minutes with a shot in a deciding like elimination game, to still win it like fuck that's that tells you that this isn't just two guys um albeit the two guys are and it's the other things right like the the penalty kill perfect if we were going to harang about special teams we'd be talking about the power play and stop taking penalties and the

refs need to be their penalty kill their defensive play their shots against it's all been and it's not been their calling card i'm trying to think when did this start did it start in the playoffs we were never trumpeting edmunds before all coffee paul coffee Well, and Mark Stewart, right, Rhett? I mean, that's, we don't give enough credit. I mean, the head coach is there for a reason to make that final decision. But as, hey, look, I get time for Chris Knoblock because he's got a set of gonads, man. Like, he's made some tough calls in the playoffs.

But Mark Stewart's in charge of the penalty of kill. And the influence of Paul Coffey is obviously their power, play, defense. Like, when they made the decision to put Roberg in the lineup in the Western Conference final, and pull out day or night, that's Paul Coffee making that call. You know, it's not like Chris Knoblock didn't have any input. You know, if he put up a fuss and said, no, we're not doing that. And here's why. And I'm the head coach.

No, but that's how much respect that everybody has for Paul coffee. But I kind of grow weary from time to time about the accolades, the flowers that we give to the head coaches. Of course, that by definition, that they deserve the attention. but it's like Bill Daly. The rest of these guys do the work. 100%. Well, Rhett, like who are some of the guys that you played for? We've talked about Jim Playfair and how much respect you have for him.

Well, all of it. Anyone you watch any coach, the guys, what Dregs is saying is bang on. The guys that are at the rink watching the game, not that the coach doesn't oversee it or point them in these directions or have a game plan. Those guys put in hard hours. time and and they put together a lot of the stuff. They give the coach the option. Okay.

We're seeing this. We want to try this or we can do this. What do you think? And the coach ultimately makes a decision, but those guys just put in all. They put in all the work. I'm sorry. They just do.

And I would not have coffee would be that guy. And the thing is at the time, because just because it's probably not fair, certainly not fair to coffee, but because they've done the old, boys club for so long. It's Craig McTavish, Charlie Huddy, you know, cycling the alumni

through. I'll be honest, it felt like Paul Coffey doesn't feel like to me a guy who's in that coaching fraternity. He just seems like he's he's got lots of money. I'd rather golf. It was a surprising hire to me. I'm dead wrong. Yeah. I mean, he did. He has

a bit of a coaching resume. I mean, you know, OJL, So junior hockey, tier two hockey. I mean, keep in mind, Marty San Luis, you know, went from minor hockey to head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. I mean, it's ingrained. It's in their DNA, especially when you've got smart hockey people like Paul Coffey and Marty St. Louis. But, you know, coffee is old school. I haven't had a conversation with him directly about this, but he's not a coach, and it's weird for this era of player.

he's not grinding the players through video. Like I'm sure, Knoblock, and they'll have special team video sessions, but Koff isn't sitting down with his defensive core and picking apart. He has excellent communication individually and with the group, but it's more with him about eye test and feel. How does the game feel?

How did that game feel? I mean, everybody talks about Miteo Sacco and being a lifeline for Evan Boucher. and that's that's somewhat obvious because of the way that echo him plays and how that's more or less freed bushard up to be what evan bouchard is paul coffee's had a tremendous amount of influence on on evan bouchard sure look at the way he plays i mean there could be a better mentor like if bobby orr's not there it's got to be coffee yeah yeah and paul coffee in his heyday ah this entire career he wasn't worried about the mistakes that he made he wasn't choking his stick because oh i just turned the puck over. Like that didn't even enter his mindset. He's always been that. It feels like he's always been that guy. Always that guy. And that's how he coaches. Yeah. Um, I guess. And then on the other side,

this one's hard to, hard to handicap in a way. I know that the, I was looking this morning, Betway has, uh, the Florida Panthers as a favorite. Minus 1.30 somewhere like that. Somewhere in that. Yeah. Oilers are plus 1.15. I don't see a dud. here. I think this and we've had some. We thought because we were getting excited. Florida, Tampa Bay, round one. There's going to be a banger. We're all and it was not.

Went to pick Colorado. Going to be a banger. Oh man. Load me up. Nope. Colorado, Dallas. It went six, but it was kind of a sleeper. Rhett and I talked about it yesterday. We were having a chas. There's been some moments, but I feel like for all the parody and how much good hockey

we thought we were going to see, it's been spotty. Toronto gave us moments in round one and there was game seven but but i feel like both of these teams they've had enough rest they're healthy there's no glaring injury coming in this this feels like six seven to me right across the board i'm with you and if that's the case then it it leans towards a florida panthers right because that's the m o of florida and they publicly they'll openly talk about that's in wheelhouse right when they can wear teams down later into the series how are they going to do that? You know, physicality can be defined many different ways.

You know, are they going to run the Edmonton-Lauders defense on the fortune? Yeah, they're going to try, but most teams do. That's, you know, that's not unique to the approach of Florida. I think it's more in how they manage Connor McDavid, you know, trying to slow him down, stand him up on the blue line if there's an opportunity or Drysidal or Nuge or Zioch or Zioch-Kim and anybody. You know, front of the net, Stu Skinner has been he's been allowed to elevate his game and regain his confidence. So again, credit to the structure of the orders,

their defense, that's not going to be the case, I don't think, because Matthew Gitchuk, Sam Bennett, I mean, go down the list of those guys that they're going to take their swings at him every chance they can, every single chance. That NEP front should be a war zone in the Stanley Cup final. I think it will.

And maybe most importantly, everyone is committed in this series. You don't get to the Stanley Cup final unless you're willing to block shots and do all the cliche stuff. But when I think of Barkov, when I think of Bennett, when I think of Eckblad,

when I think of Foresling, I mean, I guess you could throw Kachuk and Reinhart and their top players into this mix. They seem to relish shutting down the opposition's best players as much as they do, generating offense and scoring goals. Certainly Barkov and Bennett and Forsling and Ekbud.

That's going to be problematic. That's going to be problematic for the Oilers. But it's McDavid too, right? Well, I think of the two best players in the series. I have a tough time with anyone trying to paint the Oilers as huge underdogs here. Those guys could take over games. Look at game six against Dallas. McDavid on the power play, one guy in the world can make that play, one nothing.

You only got nine shots after that. Yeah. Yeah. And what happens here? So the Florida Panthers have been, for the most part, fairly disciplined at this point of the playoffs, right? Again, playing that style that, and I think we overstated. I think the media in general, you know, has this vision of, you know, the big bad flyers or the Boston Bruins back in the eight. They're not that.

They're not that. And they're going to try and impose their will, but all it's going to take is a couple of ticky times. Hackey calls early on, like just a touch on the hands on McDavid and whoop the arm goes up and here goes the Euters power play or just a push in front of the net, you know, that little cross check that they've cracked down on, you know, in the corners and the front of the net. I mean, if that stuff gets called the way they say it's going to be called, then, you know, Florida's going to have to tip-y-toe, at least early in the series and that might open things up for McDavid and company.

Quick pivot. I know your colleague, Pierre Lebrun, he's putting stuff out all the time, but the most recent, rumblings, yeah, rumblings. Rumblings, I saw the rumblings, Marty Natchez. But I want to start with Jacob Markstrom, that the New Jersey, Calgary thing has rekindled, if it ever went away for a little bit, whatever you want to call it. Pierre is saying that Markstrom is still inclined to go to New Jersey if something were to happen. Does this, I guess, it just feels like this was the fit all along.

He did mention there's other teams that have gotten into the fray. Any idea of who these other teams or thoughts on who they might be? Well, I can't imagine the Toronto Maple Leafs have at least connected with Calgary on Markstrom. They know that they need a more consistent level of goaltending. And that probably is more to do with Joseph Wolfe's bad luck and his inability to stay healthy. So they need a guy who can put in 50 games, you know, an upgrade on that area of the game. And the history that Tree Living would have with Marchtime,

it just is Toronto willing to part with the assets? We know that New Jersey is, but according to LeBron's piece, you know, Fitzgerald also talked about what? Wanting to change his forwards. You get something different there, wanting to add something to his defense. Well, the 10th pick overall is in play, but I'm sure Calgary wants that as part of a package for Marks.

Yeah, it would make, it would, it just, it would make a lot of sense because so often you get into these scenarios and Marner would be one of them where the player has the no move and he's going to control everything. Well, here, there's a team that would like Markstrom and a team that is prepared to move him and the player is prepared to go. It feels like those are three real and there's tap space. Like, yeah, whenever we do these hypothetical trade talks, there's usually one stumbling block. Yeah, but how do they fit him in the cap? Yeah, but he's got a no move. All that kind of, I guess if the flames are going to eat money would be the only other thing, if they're going to two years left on that salary,

there's 10. It wouldn't have to, but that's a good way to give some value to New Jersey. We don't want to move 10. Okay, well, we'll eat too money in a year. Well, if I'm Fancy, I get that deal done. Because the one thing that New Jersey cannot do is start the season with a question mark and goal attending. You know, he's made some bold decisions.

He just got a contract. extension mid-season. So he's in good shape as general manager, just played the fire of the coach card and, you know, hired somewhat of a rival in Sheldon Keefe, who I think is a good coach. But there's a lot of, not risks, but significant moves that Fitzgerald has already made. But now he's got really snug up that belt as general manager and improve his roster. And for me, it starts in goal and it starts with Jacob Markstrom. I'd be surprised if they don't find a way to get them. So we talked about this other day.

If the framework can play is number 10 to the flames and Markstrom to the devils, and we've got to figure out some other stuff. Who's saying I need more? Or are we assuming retention? I mean, walk us through where is number 10 more valuable than Jacob Markstrom or would that vary team by team based on how they value the position?

Yeah, well, look, I think going into the trade deadline that Fancy wasn't interested in trading the 10th overall pick at that point. I wouldn't have been 10, right? They'd be marks him. No, that's right. Yeah, yeah, that's right. But he didn't want to give up that pick. And now he's publicly disclosing that he's willing to give up that pick.

When I, I'm not a draft guru, but I know this class, I would say fairly well, you're getting a hell of a player, 10th overall. I mean, you never know what the long run is. I mean, you're talking three, four, five years. you know, before you get that NHL established player. But I mean, if I'm Fitsy and the 10th pick overall is required to get Markstrom, then yeah, I'm probably asking for a little retention. By the way, just for context, fellas, the devils were the fifth highest odds to win the cup this year.

Only Colorado, Carolina, Toronto, Ebington had tighter numbers. Like the Devils beat the Rangers last year, came back 2.0. it's the devil's year it's the devil's time like that just the background drop of all the changes they've made drag it like they have to address this yeah so just a bit off topic we were talking about gold heading you just tweaked pender you just tweaked my memory on this i had a back and forth with somebody who's part of a club executive so he knows what he's talking about in the east telling me that they're pretty sure eager shisterkin is looking for at least 12 and a half and might get 13 i was asked And the reason this person must have been listening to Toronto Radio.

I was on with Koli Ackable this morning. And he asked, and I'm like, well, I mean, he's got to be 10 and a half. Like, he's got to be in that realm. And this guy's going to the world. He's got to send me a text. He was, dude, you're way like this guy's getting 12 and a half to 13. I'm like, okay, this is going to be fun. So I would say if you looked at what Kerry Price made when he signed it and you look at his

percentage of the cap, just Thurkin should be the same percentage of the cap. and with its growth, that puts them in that range. That's how they, that's how they do the math. Normally, that's how you do the mouth. Yeah. Good times. Big numbers, man. Big numbers.

Marking six numbers of a deal. Oh, but that's terrible taxes. It's a new congestion tax in New York City. Yeah, it's so hard. It's going to chew up a lot. Yeah. So hard to get around. It's a hell out of them.

Three and four are tough to sell and everyone wants to be at six for this. And in the prior rounds, I guess what, they were favored against L.A. all the others, they were lower seated. But like the first couple ones, it's like, cool, we're there.

But it's like, if I could be there when they clinch, like, I'll pay double what I'd pay to be at game three. That drags. Also, my kid told me that he didn't want to go to any, he's a big Panthers fan. Right. It's gone on too long. Yeah. They should have went all in last year with the momentum they had. They should have tried to do something big last year.

They didn't because they had a nice push the year before. The problem with the push the year before that was completely unexpected and half of it was to do with the rest of the league when they went up against the Buffalo Sabres were a big deal. They're sleeping in those games and that happens. We talked about this two days ago because Teage went to Buffalo in that mock we talked about. And it was said, the exact that we read word for word, Buffalo absolutely has this

pick and play. There's talk around the league that they don't necessarily need this. They've got lots of young kids coming. You didn't like the idea of platooning UPL and Markey. I think it's a similar, like you need two guys in today's NHEL, don't you? I do, but I think UPL and around here, we're closer to it. Yeah. But they like them.

They like him. They think he can do the job. So I just, I'm not saying that he wouldn't. Marks, I just think it's a longer shot. But that being said, I just had a conversation with the guy this morning. He needs to do something. Because, you know, who's next on the chopping block?

Him. Him. The other team that's in their team. He's been there a while now, right? They got the Taylor Hall thing going back. And they do have a lot of youth and kids and stuff. They're soft as puppy poo. They have terrible, like, they've got quality

to fair. but they're terrible in their own end. And like, well, I already said it. They're soft as puppy poo. So, you know, who would they want? That's the, I was just going to say, usually we can, okay, let's make this work. On the back end, you've got Dahlene Power and you just traded for Bowen Byram. They got that Samuelson guy too.

You know, so I don't know that there's a huge need there. You'd maybe like somebody that's a little bit older. You'd have an established guy. Griseled, yeah. And then up front, like you say, you've got so, you just got, you got a ton of guys. They're just off the front. They need guys to dig in and have a little bit of push. Would you move Rasmus Anderson for 11?

And the context being Rasmus has two years left and then he's a UFA and he'll be approaching 30. I wouldn't. No. Wow. Wait. Are we getting 9, 10 and 11? Well, you're getting 11 for sure. And then if you get marks from for 10, then you have 9, 10, 11.

The only issue I see with that is that Rasmus Anderson is a good player and he's still young enough and you have no defense. I mean, I can't answer it because I think it's a deeper question if you are going to look at moving Anderson for that 11th spot. And I don't know that Anderson's what they want anyway. I know. But even if you were, I just don't. Yeah, I know. But even if you were, I don't, I would have to look at who's available in free agency as far as defensemen. because I don't care what they say.

Craig Conroy and Gindler and all the, they're re-tueling and rebuilding. But what they don't want is San Jose style. They don't want 3,000 people at the rink. And I think the flames fans will come out to watch. But if yours, that, you know what I mean? But the thing of it is, you look at what's happened over the last six, eight months, they're kind of there anyway, right?

If you're trading Markstrom, you've been. basically stripped it bare. You traded Hanuffin and Lindhall. You've traded. You've traded the nucleus of your team. You've still got some guys, but let's be honest. If you then trade Anderson away, does that, does that one move turn it into a full-fledged tear down?

I might be pick number one or two. You have to be able to play in the NHL and you don't want to ruin your goaltender, the up and comer. Justin Wolf can't be, even though you can go to him and say, dude, just play. Don't worry about it. He's, fuck that. You're giving up seven a game and you're playing your ass off.

That doesn't feel very good. Yeah. And again, I think they're going to add a D-Men whether or not. My position on Rasmus would be you don't have to make this decision now. And unless your socks are absolutely blown off, you don't make this decision now. In a year from now,

he'll have one year left at four and a half. No matter what Rasmus Sarrison looks like, the best version of himself were last years, which is not very good. He's still a steal at four and a half million dollars. And there's no like, oh, you know, quick, he's going to evaporate and turn to nothing. You have two years. Listen, I just.

You just do this up. You just do. I'm just looking at it. It's Buffalo and it's the 11th overall pick. I would look for something else to be quick. Or more. 11 plus. I mean, you're getting a top three defensemen, top two defensemen in the NHL at four and a half million dollars.

That's a huge deal on the cap. And it's a really good player. I want more than just 11. It's not like this is a third. 30-year-old goalie or anything could happen. Yeah. 33-year-old goalie. If you get an odd-numbered season from Markstrom, he's no good.

That's what he's been in Calgary. But I think we're also the more reasonable expectation of what he's going to be. We're also just playing funnies because I don't know if that's the what, like when you do the Buffalo Sabres build, if they like their goaltender, they've got four defensemen they like. Exactly. I agree. I don't think Rasmus Anderson is what they'd have circled as far as given up that 11. pick.

Yeah, I don't know what, and I don't know that there's anything, I don't know that there's a deal there. If, if not the goalie, and because they do have three younger guys already and they don't, you're not sure,

I don't think a weaker deal makes, I don't know how that happens either. I don't think it's defense. I think they would take a defense, but I just don't know that that's what they'd be targeting. I know, their bottom, their fourth line is shit.

And now that seems like an easy thing to fix. And I got to believe that Lindy Ruff's going to come back to Buffalo and know exactly. Lindy Ruff played for the Buffalo Sabres. He coached here forever. He knows what the people of Buffalo want. They're going to want a little grit. And I don't think the flames are a dance partner as far as a trade. God damn it.

See, I was, I just got to try. You got to just do a three. Nine, 10, 11. Bing, bang, bang. That's the whole Boston Burns thing. That's right. And hopefully that it works better. 15, 16, 17.

So, yeah. There's other teams in that range, though, that'll trade. Like Detroit at 15, they're at the same spot as Buffalo. And they need goaltending. Let's say New Jersey doesn't bite. I think the New Jersey thing has to happen. I don't think, here's the problem with Detroit, Ryan, is that you're going to have to,

there's only a couple spots where Markstrom's going to go. Oh, that he did waive for. Yeah. He's not going to open up to. I would think L.A. He'd say yes to, and New Jersey's already said yes to. and then after that we're kind of... Where is he from?

And secondly, we typically see these big blockbusters after the Stanley Cup. And maybe you got it close, but you don't finalize out of respect for taking the spotlight away from the league showcase series.

No, I don't know that. I don't think there's a long week to do it. But okay, I get it. Do you think that I don't know that that's been on Conroy's MO, though, the, the first, the squeeze.
