Some news goes, some breaking news. The Anaheim Ducks, Leo Carlson, the Philadelphia Flyers came through with a massive offer sheet last week on Friday for Leo. Carlson, the Ducks had a week to match. Otherwise, they would get four first round picks. Count it, Gould. Four first rounders. Or you have to pay $18 million a year.

the Anaheim docks have matched today. So they have to pay Leo $18 million in each of the next five seasons. I'm not shocked. I'm wondering about this for beak character though. There's some questions for sure. He has some splaining to do because he has been a grinder.

And at a certain point, you feel like, maybe I'm not going to grind this. guy or these guys so what extreme do you know like if you're grinding just to grind what it yeah if it's a cost hearing three million a year yeah and the other like I was thinking about that because I didn't this just happen yeah yeah and now that he they have matched which I fully expected why didn't they do it instantly why I'm yeah no I think really it's such but it's such a big number you have to kind of look at it and All right.

Well, what about Cutter Goce? What about what does that mean down the road? It means you're paying them because you overplayed your hand. That's what it means. Yeah. And I know there's been a lot said about it in the last week, the Samueli family. I mean, they've got the money, but they're more of a budget. They've got a budget and how they operate things with that team.

They're not just going to spend in the cap and, you know, budget be damned. So I think there was a bit of, is there, are there some trades we can make? what else can we do? Is there an opportunity? What if we take four first rounders? How could we possibly? And in the end, yeah, you come back to it. This guy is a kid. And this is from the owners, Henry and Susan Samueli, quote,

matching the offer sheet was an easy decision, as Pat has intelligently left enough cap space to give us the ability to retain Leo. We have extremely high expectations for Leo. We firmly believe he will continue his strong, growth trajectory and become one of the truly elite centers in the league while continuing to make a strong impact in our community. That is true.

The first sentence is tremendous. Pat has intelligently left enough cap space to give us, well, to me that reads, we're not happy with Pat. Yeah. That is tongue firmly in cheek. The fact that they're releasing a statement even. Yeah. No, I mean, he played hard.

He was going to play hardball. It's just the way he's done. business. He's going to grind. It's great when you get deals. It's a boy, that's a good contract. Boy, that's Pratt for Beak. He's really, he's a shrewd and hard negotiator. And now this. I don't know what Leo would have signed for. Because he needed a contract. That's why how this is all using RFA. He needs to get a deal done. What do you have signed for 12? Would he have signed for 13? What was the offer to him? What would it? God, I think. But no question.

This has cost the Anaheim ducks multiple millions in each of the next five seasons moving forward. And now it's the trickle-down effect for everybody else who's in that locker room. That's in the locker room. In that an impending RFA who's going to be. Now, they're not all Leo Carlson, but there will be some guys. I was a top five pick. I've had these, these numbers. He's had those numbers.

Why would I sign with the team if I could. and maybe get to be a restricted free agent and open to offer sheets. You have to be elite too. Well, that's not even true. You have to, every player in the NHL is really good. I'm just thinking like, if you're not elite, you still might be very desirable. Yeah.

Because I don't know what the cutoffs are for the picks, but if it's only two first rounders. Yeah. Once you get into the territory where a team is really going to have to take a deep breath to match. you're in that four first round pick territory. Yeah, but I did. I don't know.

So a team's got to, you don't have to, you don't have to, it doesn't have to be an 18 million dollar player to put a team in a pinch, I don't think. I get that that takes you immediately into a pinch. Yeah. But there would be some teams that are like, oh, shit. Now what? He's a six foot three, 210 pound centerman who is 21 years of age. He missed 12 games last year, still.

had 29 goals. He's approaching a point per game. He had 67 and 70. Yeah, he's elite. And was the second overall pick in 2023. I remember that there was a bit of shock there. So maybe that's a little go higher than people thought. But it did not take long for the ducks to look smart on that one.

So what is now what he do? Cutter Goce and Beckett Seneca and Easton. You figure it out. That's what you do. Teams need to, they need to be willing to give. give up four first. They need to have the wherewithal to spend that much every year on a player and all of it, the money, the cap space. So I don't know how often we will see it. It won't be. But it was a long time. We're never going to see offer sheets because you're going to piss off

the other team. You're going to piss off other GMs. Who's if other teams and GMs in the league you're looking at this now, thinking about how they're going to have to conduct business and how they, their spending might go up. Are they pissed off at Verbeek or are they pissed off at Danny Breyer and the Flyers? Is they the one to get out? Yeah, I don't know. I think you've got to get over yourself because I think that amassing high-hand elite talent, Vegas, they don't care.

Now, they've not done this, but they don't care. They run, right? And I think that's the approach. I think there used to be an old boys club to, to, The detriment of a lot of things, now it kind of ran smoothly and they're handshake deals and kept everything quiet. I like this better. Go for it. You love it for the kid.

Why aren't you using, Binders said it before, why aren't you using the CBA to your team's advantage? Yeah, it's a tool. It's a tool. It's there. Use it. I mean, you know you can extend guys a year before they're up, right? Like, Patverbeek knows that too. Yeah.

And that's what's going to change, right? Which could be good for players. They maybe have a little bit more, I don't even know if leverage is the right word, but they'd have a little bit more power going in. It's, well, FOMO, we don't need to do it right now if we want to roll the dice and wait for a. But you just picture Carlson last year, you knew he's going to be a good player. Yeah. Another good year.

You're telling me that, well, I think everyone's learned. You don't run an elite player into RFF? Yeah. You can't risk it. Even if you thought 14 was crazy expensive. It's like you'd love to have that now, wouldn't you? Yeah. So he's going to offer more.

And then Minchikov, who is like in and out of their lineup and like has flashes of, oh, maybe he's the top four and other times doesn't play. It's like now of a sudden he's getting 70 years because you're freaking out. Like this is all a result of Pat being an incredibly hard bargainer and agents finally waiting patiently to get a cut at him. Yeah, it was interesting. I saw a little bit of a back and forth on. on the old ex last night between Seraveli and was it

Mitchikov's agent saying basically well, you know, the agent was actually going around to teams canvassing and shopping for offer sheets. And the agent's like, uh, this is not accurate. And Frank fired back. So it's hey, it's touchy times. Kind of their job too, right? Like your job is

to get the most for your client. Like, yeah. Yeah. Like ducks are feeling it. Here's a chance to get Mitchikov if you want them. There was reports of like multiple offshoots out there, then they get that done. And the Barrett Hayden one was what Red's talking about, where it doesn't have to be a big name guy. It just has to put a team in an awkward spot.

That was a second rounder and you have to hold them for the whole year. You can't trade them. It's a one year deal. Utah likes to match, but that's another way to just make another team uncomfortable. What do they do with Hayden? Now you have to extend him it more than you want or lose them for nothing, probably. I like it.

I think it's sneaky. Well, I don't even know if it's sneaky. It's using the CBA. The way it's written. Yeah, it's the way it's written up. You can. A million people have said it, and I heard it the other day,

I mean, you can develop, I guess, but you're typically not even handed the ingredients to turn a guy into a great. So you can develop them all you want, and a guy can all of a sudden become a number one. But that's not the recipe. I do. No, and they didn't even get them.

Philly didn't even get them, right? Still duck. Like they went, he still needed a draft one. They went over the top. Yeah. 18 million, like they went over the top and still couldn't get them.

to extend. What's that start with? That probably starts with, you know, 18 or more. Caprizov's at 17. Like, McDavid will be up in it, to able to extend in a year. What's that 25? What was it like, what was the cap coming with that? It was 40 something. So yeah, it was 37 and a half. It's all relative, but it all kind of, it all kind of shakes down. Like if you're celebrini, are the sharks going to say no to that? I don't know how you can. And then you work your way off of that. You're going to say, okay, shoot, but yes. Yeah. And then, and then you work your way off of that. And then you say, well, if celebrini's, you're 20, all right, well, who's next in line? Okay, well, you get 15%?

I don't know. Like, I don't know how it plays out. Yeah. And again, it's 20% for year one of the cap. As long as it keeps growing, that'll be fine by the midway point of the deal. When the cap's 140 million, it's a $140 million. and Celebrini is making max salary for four years ago.

If I'm Celebrini, why am I? I want a one year deal, 20%. And next year I want the same thing. And until I leave, then there's a thought about do you want to win? If you're taking 20, how much does that leave for the team? But who drives, I'm a team guy

And on the flip side for the Flyers, you, and we've watched it here. I don't know how long, when's the last number one center? Anyway, never. It's going to be,

we got to give up four first round picks and we got to pay the guy 18. And if 18 is a lot of money, but that's the going rate, then okay, well, you got to be fine with that. It doesn't preclude you from finding first rounders down the road. Well, maybe there's a trade meter. There's another way we can add a first rounder.

It's not the craziest thing, which is why I think a lot of people felt like Anaheim was going to match this thing. Yeah. Because they kind of had to after the McTavis trade too, right? Yeah, they've depleted. Yeah. Like they were perfectly vulnerable, not with the cap, but with, you've just cashed out on Mason. If you'd waited another three weeks, maybe you can pivot better. you can use him in a package to get another guy, whatever.

But they played that card already. It would have been tremendous if they didn't match. And then Carlson goes to Philly. So you've got Zegris and Carlson, Cutter Goce, who didn't want to play in Philly. He's on the other side. I mean, it would be weird for an East West to have that kind of a, that kind of a rivalry. But there'd be some serious hatred. I think there probably is already.

I'm not sure how. Well, there certainly would be annoyance. But that's from owners. ship from GM. The guys on the team don't get shit. No, right? Like maybe Goce who asked to get out of there, but it's,

I don't think anyone else is going. Well, we even saw that last year when they played. Yeah, he. Flyers guys are going up to, to Cutter Goce. It's like, I think I'm supposed to be mad at you for some reason. I wasn't even here when, when you were drafted.

Damn. So, yeah, that's, that's what's going on. Now we talked a little bit about the other, the other news are, can I, before we switch. gears. Is that a better approach to waiting for these guys in free agency?

Because there are teams, and I don't think Calgary and Winnipeg and certain franchises aren't in the best position to attract free agents, but that's always been, well, I'll wait until he gets to free agency and get him. No one gets there anymore. That's a problem, right? Yeah. Like, look at the class this year. Everyone's willing to pay more with an increasing cap to keep their guys.

I just don't think it's always kind of been like round out your group with free agents. Never like find core players in free agency. There's examples like Tavares or whatever, but it's like it's just around the edges in free agency now. No stars are getting there. Yeah. And I think Tavares wanted to get out of the island, right? Yeah, you want to play Toronto.

It's great. Whatever. Pretty much if anybody has any kind of appetite to stick around, they generally do. Yeah. Yeah. And players today, you'll ask out with two years left. Werenzky. No, no, we're good.

Larkin. Helibuck. Quinn Hughes. Brady Kachuk. Maybe that's, maybe that's, maybe that is classy on their part. Instead of just. I'm going there anyway. I'll let you recoup something.
