Starting point is 00:06:27 NHL. He's a great year in the American League when healthy. and a nice reward for his outstanding work with the affiliate over the last couple years. Brace yourself, I know. It's a lot. No, you know, I was just thinking about... I feel good for him.

Starting point is 00:06:42 Yeah, I'm happy for him. And he's had limited time here. Put up point so he's been around. Even in the time he's been here, it's been okay. Yes. I don't know that he has the profile of a 4C, but like he's productive. he's not a big face-off Lugan that doesn't get scored on.

Starting point is 00:07:03 He's buzzing around at the other end. I think he's Marty Murray. Okay. And I mean that in the very... In today's NHL, Marty Murray's... Very, very good hockey player, put up massive numbers, just couldn't quite... Yeah, he's the kind of guy that could go make a killing

Starting point is 00:07:22 for the next 12 years in Europe, or maybe just bounce between the H.L and the NHL. You can make lots of money playing in the minors now, too. but it's not life's real you almost feel bad and you're happy to give him an opportunity and he's definitely earned the opportunity you start looking

Starting point is 00:07:40 24 lads oh I know yeah like I think there's a very real chance that he can carve out a bit of an NHL career I just don't know that it's going to be with this organization when you see Gross and Beecher and Kestania who will be a writer Well I mean he's an RFA and he's

Starting point is 00:07:56 He's a first round there was big he can check he doesn't get scored on I would prefer Karens, but I also understand why the coach might prefer Beecher. Like, Beacher's been up the whole time and he's been down since the claim. And he was a first rounder, and he skates really well. He's not physical. How old? Beacher would be similar age.

Starting point is 00:08:16 Maybe, yeah, I think so. The problem for the 24-year-olds is that, well, you better make a stab at it now because the 18-year-old can now really quickly take your opportunity. And that's what it is with Cairns, because if you add Gross and Castania and maybe even another center that's ready, like, If we stop making kids and Dean's not into that. Look at the total series. A point per game in the American hockey. A point per game guy. Into this year.

Starting point is 00:08:41 And he came up at four points and five games last year. And Red, I will get you just to back off the Marty Murray a little bit. I mean, Marty Murray was Canadian junior hockey player of the year, captain of team Canada with the world juniors. Look at that year with his last year of junior. I see it,

Starting point is 00:08:56 Ryan. I watched it. I just, I'm not saying he's Marty Murray. I'm just saying like this, his skill set is to create offense, but to get into the top nine in the NHL is going to be the challenge.

Starting point is 00:09:08 Do you agree with that? Yeah. Is this, uh, how similar is this to a Matt Phillips scenario? Very different. Very good. It's just similar. And I would, I would,

Starting point is 00:09:23 like 510, 175 is not, is not big, bigger than Phillips, but you're right. It's not the size profile of a sentence in the end of the channel. And if you're not, if you're not, size still matters. And if you're a little bit, not as much as it used to, but you're going to be able to move then.

Starting point is 00:09:40 Yeah. And if you don't have either, and, you know, he's not a horrible skater, but it's not an elite tool. Anyway, I feel like you could go to Buffalo. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:09:51 And look in Rochester. They'd have a guy like this. And find a guy like this. Yeah. You can go to San Jose and look at their farm team, San Jose. And they'd have a guy like this. And you could go, you don't know what I mean?

Starting point is 00:10:04 Like it's, I would say the chances of him land. You'd hate to see him go, right? It's one of those things. Oh, you'd hate, uh, no, I wouldn't. I don't really, I don't really lose sleep thinking, well, this guy's going to explode. This is a, no, you say Louis 2.0 waiting to happen here. And especially at this time in their life cycle, like, if you're a team that's been moving your picks out for five years and your prospect cupboards bear and you're in a contention window, maybe we get a. cup, this is an important piece.

Starting point is 00:10:34 When you're looking at six first rounders in the next two years and you've got a top five prospect system in the NHL and eight second rounders in the next year, this is a disposable part. I guess. I see it sounds harsh. I see the flip side of it though. It's also what you're a team that does like you've got a bunch of picks in that. That's all great.

Starting point is 00:10:53 But what, what do we know for sure about the draft picks and any of these, the Castanias and grosses of the world? You're not in a position to be thumbing your nose. that potential skill or center depth is, I guess, my only. You couldn't score a frickin' goal to start of the year. Yeah. And you didn't bring Rory Karens up. That told you all you needed to know.

Starting point is 00:11:13 They don't believe that he's going to be the difference maker. I think they like him. Everything we're saying about Rory Karens is in a positive light, but he's not going to come in and take the world by storm at the NHL level. Yeah. Good for him. Let's get some games. Also.

Starting point is 00:12:48 Leafs lose their sixth in a row to the stars last night. Rangers were tied late with Florida. I know everything's not about me, but I wish it was. Something's going on in the universe. And I don't like it right now. I've been sick for four weeks. Four weeks ago today, I made a nest down in my basement cave and that I haven't left. I sneezed the ear, the coffee.

Starting point is 00:13:19 We are going to finish seventh or eighth now. I don't know that. How high can we go? The worst they can fall to is 27, I believe. Well, we're on our pathway. I'm telling you. So Florida has 82 points. They cannot have caught.

Starting point is 00:13:36 Seattle ain't win in a game. Six from the bottom is the worst you can go. Who? Vancouver, we're not catching anyway. Chicago's not catching us. Those two have clinched 32nd and 31st. That's correct. Yeah. Yeah. We noted that. The Rangers,

Starting point is 00:13:52 the flames, the Leafs, Seattle, Florida. Florida's too high up. Let's do those four teams. Rangers, Calgary, Leafs, Cracket. Who's going to win a game the rest of the way? Not Seattle, the way they're going. I think they also have a tough schedule.

Starting point is 00:14:09 It's weird this time of year because they might get a team that looks good and they rest to everyone. Who do you believe has the best opportunity to win at least one, if not two games? I can, I see a path to the flames getting three of a possible four points. I see a path to the flames winning out. It does, yeah, it depends a lot on what Colorado is going to do. It's Colorado tonight that is the deciding factor. Are you resting? Because they played last night in Edmonton, obviously, we know that.

Starting point is 00:14:40 And I would have said rest guys tonight. I mean, play guys tonight, except they played last night. They might go with the philosophy of, well, they might not rest anyone. Colorado, one of the best teams, like, they're 28, 7 and 5 on the road. This is one of the best avalanche teams we've ever seen. This year in back to backs, there are 9, 2, and 1. in game one, five, four, and two in the back half. So they're mortal on the second half.

Starting point is 00:15:13 That's that, that, that, that, that, not good. They're 500. Yeah, mortal is like, yeah, most teams suck on the second game of back to backs and but even, even this team, which is tremendous. Well, Sabatour Cooley, it's going to be his, is he starting? Because it'll be his last game if he is. Wolf's been in both so far, again, in the last 10 days, uh, but this season against the avalanche, the nine two.

Starting point is 00:15:36 and 3-1 losses. I remember the 3-1 was kind of a 2-2 game until the goal was disallowed from gross and then the empty-thetter makes it 3-1. Right. And the one before that, both goalies got in because Wolf got yarded quick and then clearly allowed five, yeah.

Starting point is 00:15:53 So Wolf taking the loss, I guess, to be fair. Yeah, and then, you know, Nate's one goal up on Caulfield for the Rocket Richard Trophy. Does he care? Do they care? I don't know. We'll see when we get to warm up. tonight. But, you know, to call that game in Colorado a close one because it was almost two to two without a challenge. I'm not calling it close. I'm saying I'm not saying you're getting

Starting point is 00:16:16 just like that was a lopsided affair and Wolf was excellent. We don't know what these teams are going to do and they've clinched all they can they got the president's trophy division conference. There's nothing for them to play for. Their coach is sitting at home with a broken Same with last night. No McCar, no Cadry, no Manson. Now, listen, the flames would have, a lot of things would have to go very well for the flames to get a point or win tonight. Yep. But to Rhett's point, the universe is it work.

Starting point is 00:16:59 Popular guy today. What's happening? The universe is, I'm telling you, we've got to do, maybe we have to sacrifice this chicken. Oh, dear. It's something to swing the, uh, whatever's going on. Retsick. Like the flames, the flames,

Starting point is 00:17:24 there should be a walk in the park for the Colorado Avalanche. Yeah, I mean, Flames are a top 10th team in the NHL. You're right, a walk in the park because it's Colorado and they've kind of kicked a shit out of everyone in the league, even though they've come back to Earth the second half, blah, blah, blah.

Starting point is 00:17:45 They are clearly the number one favorite, right? Yeah. So yes, but no, because it's a back-to-back. And like you said, they're mortal when they're back-to-back. And it's the end of the year. So are they going the extra mile? They've already wrapped up the presidents, right? They wrapped up everything they can wrap up.

Starting point is 00:18:07 They've got guys out. McCard. And the flames at home are a pain in the ass. Yeah. And if they win this game, I think they win, they get four. I think they win out. The interesting wrinkle, L.A. did punch their ticket to the playoffs last night. We have our field of 16th set, but LA can still finish as high as second.

Starting point is 00:18:26 So they might be playing for home ice on Thursday night, depending on other results and we don't know until we get there. But that's why this season, this time of the year is such a fool's error and trying to guess what's going to happen because you can be like, oh, this is what we expect to win here. We said a lot, well, we don't know who's actually trying to win. Yeah. And the playing shouldn't be.

Starting point is 00:18:46 And even if you are trying to win, I'll tell you, who's trying to win last night and stay in the playoff hunt? that's the only thing is every time we look and say oh this thing's going to be desperate to win scenario yeah San Jose B yeah and they just got eliminated they should flyers though right flyers took care of their business sabers kind of did their thing it's just the craziest time of year to try to figure out what the hell's going to happen so you know we could try to guess where they're going to finish they're scary at home for sure the goalies have the ability to steal games even if they sit their three best players Colorado's lineup is still way better than the flames.

Starting point is 00:19:21 You just hope that, you know, they're working tonight because the flames will beat teams that don't work. That is the track record. I'm sick of being negative. Starting point is 00:21:38 But we sit here and you look at, yeah, the avalanche come into town, they have seven regulation losses this year. They have 53 wins again. They're just leading the league. He might get nominated for coach of the year. It's such a award that. is based on the environment you're placed in. Like what massive drama has he had to deal with?

Starting point is 00:21:59 Like you look at what Travis Green said to deal with in Ottawa. And you're like, oh my God. Like what a shit show. He's done a good job studying that ship. And when everyone threw their hands up and said this team screwed, they come down the stretch and they're playing like 750 hockey and they're into the, like what a great job. You don't want to play that team.

Starting point is 00:22:15 No, no one does. They're actually getting saves now. And Bednar didn't have that opportunity. And if you're voting, how do you not look at what Dan the man's done? what Travis Green's done, what Lindy Ruff's done, and say like... And the man's a floater.

Starting point is 00:22:29 He's got Sidney Crosby running things. What a pushy effing job this guy has. And Ben-Hour's got the best advancement in the world and 200-point forwards and the best center depth in the NHL. And you're like, he did a great job. But like, what was the tough decision he had to make who he was scratching because you're so deep? I think he's a great coach.

Starting point is 00:22:47 It's just a tough award. I think that's understating it a little bit. So what drama have they faced? Why do you need to face drama to be? I'm not saying you need to run out. I'm just saying the history of this award is the people that vote on it are looking for a good story. It's literally the media. Okay.

Starting point is 00:23:04 But so the broadcasters that go around, when you have a roster as good as Tampa's or Colorado's, you're expected to win your division and be a one or a two seed in your conference and expectations were met. So then when you, and you dominate en route to that. I mean, they dominate for half of you. Ryan's saying it's right. I'm not saying, this is what's going to happen, is that it's a stupid award.

Starting point is 00:23:29 Awards are given up forever and it's not new that it goes to underdog stories. Like Bob Hartley's team barely squeaked in and he won the Jack Adams. Yeah, but you're mansplaining to me, you're talking down to me like I don't know how. I'm not talking to you. What I am saying is how the people are voting on this.

Starting point is 00:23:45 It's like the... So give us your top three then. It's like the Norris. Oh, I mean, John Cooper has never won it. Bednar may get nominated. It just seems a little silly. Who would be on your ballot? If you got to make a list of three or five, who would be there?

Starting point is 00:24:04 Well, I'm going to put Jared Bednar there. Okay. And you're going to put Cooper in there as well? Probably. Lindy rough. And then if you want to pick a, oh, that's a nice story. So Lindy Rough's team has more points than Tampa has won that division. It'd be on the middle.

Starting point is 00:24:21 And then what about Dan the man? What about Martin St. Louis? Like, this is the problem is there's like eight to ten really good candidates. I really like St. Louis's job. Yeah. No, it's what it comes down is the media people who vote on it. What would be media people like? They like a story.

Starting point is 00:24:35 So they pick the best stories as opposed to maybe the best candidates. It's the same thing with the Norris. Is it best defensemen or most points? Great one. I don't know if you saw it. BXA and Friedman got into it on Saturday. Yep. over over over the norris and b x it was basically saying like kale macar he's on with a minute

Starting point is 00:24:57 left regardless he's on the penalty kill he's on the power play does it gets points but it comes well who's got the most points as well rasmus stallee this or whatever he's like well this this is this is kale mccar would be my guy and elli it literally has his head in his hands it's like i can't believe we had to listen to this for a minute of you defended keel mccar yeah because we all know kale McCar is, you know, the top defenseman on earth. It's just, is this the best defenseman this season? When you look at what Wrenski's done, when you look at what Bouchard's done,

Starting point is 00:25:27 when you look at what Bouchard's done, when you look at a lot of the other great candidates, it's a really tough award. Like, not unlike coach in years. So would you have Bouchard ahead of McCar on a? No, I wouldn't. But I mean, if you're just saying it's going to go to the guys with points, Bouchard's lap in the field. Like, he's way ahead of everyone else.

Starting point is 00:25:42 Right. He's going to get to probably 95 points somewhere like that. So to me, if he plays more He placed more penalty killed on the same conversation as defensemen of the year being being placed for an award. Then there's a problem with how the awards being handed out. There always has been, I think, with the Norse because it's been, it's exactly that. We need another award. You need another award.

Starting point is 00:26:05 Oh, best defensive forward. Salky. Well, how about the best? What's the best? Why is it all wrapped up into one? Because you don't treat it that way, right? When it's being voted on. Oddly enough, the universe again is all effed up.

Starting point is 00:26:19 because I saw Bouchard's numbers yesterday and I'm like, holy Christ, I'm going to have to give this guy credit. It's a phenomenal year. It's unbelievable. The amount of points this guy has. No, I'm not going to give him all the credit because he plays with some great players. But that's still, staggering, 91. He's got a shit ton of points.

Starting point is 00:26:39 Holy. And he plays more penalty kill time than McCar, albeit by a couple seconds a game. That's one of the misnomer's is that, oh, he doesn't do penalty kill. No, he does a lot of penalty kill. It's not Mero Hayskin and levels. And, you know, interesting, like Dahlene's not anywhere on the Bet365 board near the top. And Pronger and Elliott both said he was their number one. And the awards worded for the most well-rounded defenseman.

Starting point is 00:27:04 It's long overdue that we either had two more or one more defenseman awards because you can have a Paul coffee or a Bobby Orr award for guys that are incredible offensively. And you also can recognize all around play. And I think you could even recognize like the Jacob's, Slavans of the world where it's like when this guy's on, it is impossible to generate scoring chances. Bergeron, is he one of the best of the setterments of our era? He's, he was a perennial Selky guy. If he was healthy, he won it.

Starting point is 00:27:33 There should be that award. Yeah. And you could have three. It could be a Bobby Orr, most well-rounded and a, what's the name they always use? Like a stay-at-home guy, uh, the Rod Langway. Rod Langway was always the guy back in the day. Yeah. So like, it's just sad that there's only one for D.

Starting point is 00:27:48 especially when you look at this year's class because even a guy like Quinn Hughes, you're like, he's played 28 minutes a night. And he's not going to have the most points, but he's in all situations. Jake Sanderson. Yes, like there's so many good candidates. And what's crazy is you can have 60 points

Starting point is 01:33:41 I haven't been to playoffs in 15 years. Like, they're first. It's also going to be a madhouse. I know. But yeah, no, you make a good point. Buffalo's got expectation that's new for them. Carolina does this every year. They always went in the first round, apparently.

Starting point is 01:33:56 Ducks at Wild is big for the ducks. They've, what, seven of eight they've lost, I think is what it is now? They are third in the Pacific with 90 points. Can they pass Vegas? Yeah, they have two games left. So if they win out and Vegas stumbles, they could still win the division. Yeah, they can get to 94. Vegas has 93 with one game left.

Starting point is 01:34:21 Hmm. And Vegas has, I think, Seattle for their last one. everyone's getting points against Seattle. That's, uh, it feels like Vegas is division to lose right now. Yeah. Starting point is 01:35:09 Yeah. If Edmonton stubs the toe and Anaheem continues to lose, there's a path for the Kings here. Crazy. Crazy. Crazy. 16 teams. How do we feel? Pretty good.

Starting point is 01:35:21 They've all kind of earned it. I mean, they were talking about it on one of the shows yesterday on TV. you and I could not move, which sucked, but January 27th, Detroit was 10 points clear of the cutoff and leading the Atlantic. Yeah. There's going to be some aftershock there. And to your point, I don't know that I feel like the Red Wings are any more deserving than Ottawa or Boston or anything.

Starting point is 01:35:45 No, certainly not the last two months. It's just how the direction they've gone has been awful. Like basically before we got to the Olympics till now, they're one of the worst teams in the league. The teams we wanted in the east, we wanted Ottawa there. We wanted the flyers in there for the penguins. We're kind of whatever about Boston, but they've got 98 points. It's hard to.

Starting point is 01:36:07 So Islanders, jackets, wings, capitals are those other teams that were kind of in that mix. I also would have been fun. They did the nose dive post Olympics, too. We showed you that stat yesterday. Not good enough. They'll be there for a while. Capitals, I'm fine not being there. and then in the

Starting point is 01:36:23 in the west Nashville, San Jose sharks should have been fun but it's not their time yet. So yeah, we feel good about it. We're good about the 16. Yeah, yeah. And you mentioned the three series

Starting point is 01:36:37 that are already set up should be great series. I love them all. Almost doesn't matter who Buffalo plays because we're excited for the savers to be back in. Yep. Colorado's probably going to

Starting point is 01:36:47 cruise by whoever. If it's Buffalo Ottawa. That might be the funnest series to watch. Both teams bad for a long time on the upswing. Ottawa broke their playoff throughout last spring, got down three out of Toronto, way back this year, all the drama they've been through. And frankly, both teams have a lot of fun players. Like, that would be a great series. It'd be nice to see them both get to round two. True. So the Bruins play the Devils and the Sest.

Starting point is 01:37:21 ends play the Leafs. Boston's up one point. Okay, and they each have one left. Yeah. Devil's suck, but they did shock someone the other day. And the Leafs are awful. Hmm. And one's going to come down to it.

Starting point is 01:37:38 Yeah, and do want to lose. They're playing goalies I've never heard of, Dean. Yeah. Yeah, they definitely want to lose. They're like, we got three guys. I'm like, well, who's this? They're like, oh, that's number four, five, or six. Yeah, we're just playing him now.

Starting point is 01:38:05 Rangers have one game left. Flames have a couple. Toronto's got one left. And this, of course, is the probability of who's going to win the draft lottery. It's coming up. Hey, who's going to pick first overall who get Bill Daly with some cards out there and flipping team logos. It's scintillating and exciting. 9.5% for Calgary.

Starting point is 01:38:26 That's the number to keep in mind here. If you somehow could have the Rangers pass, you get an extra couple percent. So this website factors all of it in. There's two separate drawings and two separate winners and who can do it. And it's nine and a half. What does nine and a half percent look like?

Starting point is 01:38:40 Well, let's take a look. Flames with a shot to win. Eh, don't mind that. Feels like the best case. Best case is a nine and a half. At four. And at four, you're going to get your favorite defenseman or your favorite center.

Starting point is 01:40:07 Sam Renzel, they got Spencer Knight. I feel like they're a year behind the sharks, if you know what I mean. One more stud. And they'll have a ton of money to spend if there's any free agents. They're really good. Well, they deserve nice things because it's been so long since they've had. anything to cheer for there. I don't even know if it's tongue and cheek or not.

Starting point is 01:40:26 I mean, they had a hell of a run in the tens. The darks and sun. Well, but what's it been here? I don't think Chicago's won a playoff round since they won the cup in 15. Right. Off top of my head because they got pumped by Nashville once and then they missed a bunch.

Starting point is 01:40:48 There's certainly longer droughts, but they did have three cups in five years. Tough to have any sympathy for them. Flames have won first round, what, twice? They won the first round in, what, 1415 and against Dallas in 22. Yeah. I would, I would, again, this was kind of in moving backwards. I would, I would give up the flames successes.

Starting point is 01:41:15 Oh, yeah. To the Hawks in the last 10 years for the 10 years they had before that. If you can hang three banners in five years, I'd be willing to burn two decades of anything after that. That's an incredible run. I'll get to go to the game tonight. Oh, is our cane, Taves, Keith, Seabrook, Hosa, are they all playing tonight? Yeah, I think they're all playing tonight.
