So the senators come up with a massive one again last night.
They lose, I mean, they lose 30 minute a night defenseman and another, I mean,
they were down to four the night before, two nights earlier.
And then last night, they find a way Detroit gets a goal, because I was watching as he saw,
I had you on there.
Detroit gets a goal called back.
And then it's Carter Yakumchuk.
We've talked about him, obviously, Hitman.
He was in the flames kind of orange.
but we were watching very closely as the D were going in that draft.
And then he, you know, he gets picked and finally gets a taste last night and gets a goal and
an assist in a huge game for the senators.
That's how you endear yourself to the coach and the fans.
It is.
And they've been kind of waiting for this kid.
You know, it's, again, I didn't get to watch him in Calgary with the hitman.
But, you know, you'd heard all about he's got, he's got some Evan Bouchard in him.
Like it, you know, very, very poisonous.
with the puck. Good first pass.
Bomb of a shot. Like, bomb.
It's almost like he's Evan Bouchard, but he's 20 pounds heavier.
Like, he's there.
It's a 6-3, 6-4, 2-30 type of thing.
But he's got the poise.
And I think the biggest thing is Steve Steyos, I talked briefly with him yesterday before
the game, and Steyos said, you know, we had him, we were going to bring him up earlier.
But they went to bring him up and he got a slight injury.
So then things stabilized.
You're right.
The other night, Shabbat, that's 30 minutes.
He had been playing 28 to 32 minutes in the absence of Jake Sanderson.
That was Yakim Chuck's first assist.
He put it between his legs.
Last guy back.
Like, who's doing that in their first game?
You got to carry on.
Just pause this stuff, Jack.
But I want to talk about it.
about it because we got
correct here you've got kids doing
stuff some of the plays are unbelievable
and then on one hand I see that
and I go what the fuck are you doing
I know it's a playoff game
I was literally in
now they started him it's funny
I talked to Travis Green before the game and I said
you know different we had
Chum's son too right
the Dono's son Jorian got
his first game so I was texting with Chum
and he was excited
and you know it was just it was
great. Like, I felt a sense of pride. Like, keep in mind, the Ottawa senators are littered with
people that I played with their dads. Like, Jake Sanderson, I grew up with his dad and his mom.
Ellen's from St. Albert. And then Mark Gregg, I played, you know, Ridley's dad. I played in
Lethbridge with it. Like, it's, you know, when, what's the Gregor kid? Noah Greger, that's Colin's son.
I played junior with Colin in Lethbridge.
Like you go, you look at Lethb,
I'm sorry, the Ottawa senators, their team.
You know, Brady Kachukh.
I've known.
And for people who don't know who chum is,
chum is Sean Donovan.
That's Donovan.
Jorri and Donovan gets called up.
So it's just, you're looking at it.
I just,
I felt this sense of pride.
I was like, I was so happy for these parents.
Like, you know, I knew what they were like as players,
but.
You know, just seeing Sean in the stands, it was exciting.
Two different players.
I think Jorian's a guy who's going to be, it's going to take him a little longer to be an
everyday guy there, but I think he's going to be an everyday guy.
It reminds me a little bit of Ben Chirot.
It can be physical, good skater, can move the puck.
Yakim Chuck, it'll be interesting to see, because we can see the good stuff.
I want to see when the bad stuff shows up and is it going to outweigh the good stuff
because that's the one knock I've heard on him is his defensive play, right?
But that's the general consensus for kids nowadays, wouldn't it be?
It would be a rare occasion where you're looking at kids that are making safe plays.
Like we got kids playing playoff hockey right now.
They're killing a penalty in their own end.
And they're through the legs through the middle of the ice.
It's like, what are you doing?
But you see that.
And then it works out for Yakubchuk.
And you're like, well, do you tell them just, yeah, go give her?
or what's Green's message there?
I think the message is,
it's not the old major league,
great play,
don't ever do it again,
you know,
like it's like,
I think what you have to do
is give them a long leash.
The funny thing and the one thing that I know,
you can speak to this too.
I know exactly how I felt in my first game.
I was terrified.
I didn't sleep a wink the night before.
This kid walked in like he was in a lawn chair.
Like it was like,
We interviewed him after the second period.
The guy had a goal and an assist.
And Kenzie Lalonde is like, hey, how's your?
It's like, yeah, it feels good.
I was like, is he asleep?
I'm trying to look through the.
Like, I'm like, he's so casual.
And like, I never, I wished for that.
Oh, you're right.
Yeah.
I wish you could have injected that in your veins.
It would have saved me a lot of sleepless nights over my 17 years.
Is Jack drunk?
What is, what's going on with your?
camera. That's
Rhett's home camera.
I've spent
a Dean gets mad. I've spent hours
trying to look at this. I can't figure it.
Every time you move your head, it's moving
around and it's like
I just like, is it on a string?
Like
it's a new.
You're talking and it's like moving
around. It's the
Warner Bobblehead Day.
Bobblehead. But to see
these young kids and that you could still hear
right? Yeah, I'm here. Kids
there's no and I'm sure there was internal excitement.
I'm sure there was nerves.
They didn't, they don't show it.
It's just like, I thought, I watched that Matthew Schaefer the other day.
The kid's just incredible.
Incredible.
It's, you wish you had that type of, I don't know if it's swagger, confidence.
There's, that gene has been taken out of this generation where there's that nervousness.
I had nothing but nervousness.
and I look at these kids
that Yakubchuk
the one thing I've always known is
offensively I think he's a player
and what they were trying to do I think
is allow him to play
in every situation from the pro level
and you know
C penalty kill C5 on 5
work on his game away from the puck
because that's the biggest thing in pro
game is how you play away from the puck
but he looks to be
like he's going to be a play
player. And do you imagine where you've got a defensive core with Jake Sanderson, who's 23,
and an absolute, he's a superstar. You got Thomas Shabbat, who used to be a 28-minute
defenseman. Now he can play 22 and play really solid. They, you know, you put Yakum Chuck in there.
They've got Artem Zub, who's really solid. And now this, Jordan Spence is a player, too.
They got him from L.A. He's 24 years old. Good skater can move the puck.
and in the five hole they got this kid who's six four tyler clevin and got some meanness to him
and a really he's kind of a modern day ret warner that's what he is like he can hit fight do it all great
guy correct me ottawa's they're on to something there they got a pretty damn good team i'll tell you
that so that's the big picture short term because shabot is out yeah in that kind of indefinite
definitely same thing with lassie thompson the other kid that came
up. So those two are not an option right now. Yeah. So short term, they obviously a huge night,
they leapfrog themselves in. Is Yakimchuk and company, are they going to be able to, like, what's,
I think Yakim Chuck can hang around and be a difference maker. Like, I think he can, I think if he's
deployed properly, now I'll give an example, Detroit on the road, Travis Green did a good job. He
started he found Yakumtruck ice time with Cleven and then it was into Matt and Palo and like to me he
was it was smart the way he was deploying him same thing with Jory and Dorian yeah on event sorry and and
to me like Donovan I don't think he saw a shift in the third period they shrunk the bench now on home
ice against Pittsburgh tomorrow you can you can manipulate that right you can have zone starts you can
get the matchups you want Saturday.
1 o'clock in Tampa, not the case.
That's on the road.
John Cooper's a master at, you know, manipulating rosters and, you know,
coming, finding extra ice time for Kutrov and that.
Those guys are going to get trial by fire Saturday at 1 o'clock in Tampa on the road.
But that being said, you know, Tampa, you look at strength of schedule.
I'm sorry, Ottawa, strength of schedule.
They have, I don't know what's going on here.
People are calling me.
Asher he's pissed off
I sure heard about it
A chewed caramel
Listen
Why is right now
You're upset that I gave you a heck about
Oh no no I'm trying to fix this
I'm in no I'm in my in the comments
Someone has offered help
And I'm trying to follow along but oh okay
Heck illiterate I'm totally paying attention
I'm you two idiots
I might they've got if you look at strength of schedule
They've got the fourth hardest schedule
And the rest of the way
So it's not going to be a cake
walk for Ottawa, but I still, I've said this all along, and I've got to be consistent. Now,
I've got to change it a little bit. I always thought they were a best team outside the
playoff picture. Now they're in the playoff picture. They're a really darn good team, but they are
going to have at some point, you're going to have a night where the goalies aren't that good
or they're not that sharp, but they've got to limit those because they don't have much runway
here the rest of the season.
