It's put a huge wrinkle in our ice flooding attempts this week because flooding on a foot of snow, ret. Tough. Tough. Yeah. It's like, do you want some like eight foot massive bumps of ice?

Because that's not going to work. So now what's, what do you guys do? I think we got to shovel it off first and then flood. Yeah. So we'll wait for the snow to stop falling. Gotcha. Not everybody is upset to see the snow. It's nice. I have a Bernice Mountain Dog.

Oh, yeah. They run hot. Summertime, you have to watch them. Make sure you don't leave them outside because they can overheat. They do love colder weather. And this is the dummy that lives in my house. Oh, just it's nonstop. We are still back.

He was greasing over. All kinds of people. Talking flames owners, all kinds of crazy stuff. A lot of dusters in town for the CHL game. Oh, yeah, that's right. Top prospects, Canada, USA. Top. Dean, top prospect. Top prospect.

Top, yeah, not just cross. You were playing one of these, they didn't have this one. Yeah, they didn't have been to the, or I would have for sure. Tots. Yeah. Because they used to have the CHL and maybe they still do, but this is a different, this is a different animal, right?

This one? Yeah. No, they still have a CHL, yeah. Yeah. The one this week is the U.S. This is Canadian pride is on the line here. Oh, apparently. Americans, they compile all their kids into one big team of elite all-stars.

but it doesn't mean that you're going to be rolling at a 700 clip the rest of the way to get to 97 points or whatever you were set on. It's been an interesting few days for sure. That's a lot. Five to win over the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks are one, four, and two in their last seven. They love to disinterested, Dean. Yeah, they're injured, disinterested, and I don't know that they were very good to begin with. That's a triple header of that goal tender can really let them in. Yeah. Kevin letting them in?

sort of 5-1 at that point, and then Quinn Hughes would score shortly thereafter. We've been hacking on the wrong team, Dino. Canucks are not good. We should be all over the Canucks. Clearly, New Jersey is in a position much better than the Vancouver Canucks are.

His two brothers are locked in long term there. And it's like, when do you get the most for Quinn Hughes? Because you can definitely ride him to UFA. this is not pretty at all. And they're missing Philippa. He's supposed to be their two-see, but he's always hurt. Can't be surprised he's hurt. There's some other body's missing. That's as bad as Vancouver's going to look. And they just got back from a huge road trip.

First game back. Rett's great excuse. they got more time off here. We'll see if they turn it around. But I mean, they're just not that good to begin with. If Demko is not going to be active in the first start, I wonder what, I'm always curious when management move on and they kind of, they, you know, a GM or whatever is in a spot and then they leave.

And because the thought is, well, we're going to do better when this person leaves, you know, for a guy former management that maybe worked in Vancouver, but now is sitting somewhere and watching the team have a similar or even worse fate than. Well, they've had a lot of people. running the team. Is there anyone specific you'd like to hear from? I'm just trying to think. I don't remember. I wasn't. You know, like the thing with Alcavalvas, Trev wanted to rebuild, but like he was really key

on like season ticket base and stuff. So like we had to keep pushing to make the playoffs and competing and Treve opened some of those workout places of fitness center and stuff. Yeah. Didn't, uh, didn't old Jim, did he draft Quinn Hughes? Was that a, I think he may have. I think he may have. Patterson and he was pretty tight. They weren't trying to rebuild. They just were bad and they got those two guys.

That helps. And there is, again, because we've talked a lot about the trajectory of the flames and what are they? Is it what kind of a culture, winning, losing? They had a special kind of a run a couple years ago in the playoffs. In the Nashville did. They played each other. Yeah. Right.

And now here they are. That's a pretty quick fall from grace. Or was that, was that, was that, uh, What do they call it? Lightning in a bucket, right? Did they have lightning in a bucket? Yes, usually it's lightning in a bucket. Yeah.

They were up three, two, against the Oilers. They did not have Demcoe. Besser missed game seven with blood clots. They had a chance to bury the stinking oilers, didn't do it. And I'm sure Oilers fans are now taking credit for ruining the Canucks. So you think if it was a great situation out in Vancouver, old Rick Tockett might have. He saw what was going on. Right?

Like, no, I'm out of here. So is this more of the same or is this now the owner? They're dogs breakfast. They're top guys soft and doesn't give a shit other than not Hughes, the guy they pay the most money. Top forward, yeah. Yeah. And their other difference makers hurt all the time.

So. And then I think it's a bunch of muck. Yeah. If you had prime peterson like invested cares peterson, Quinn Hughes and Healthy Thatcher Demco, you can build from that. They have one of those three things right now. So only because we've talked. the better part of last week and, you know, for this season about what the flames should do if they're going to, if this is how it's going to be.

Now, yeah, they've won some games. But Don Maloney said he's not interested in taking it down to the studs and the culture, the winning culture is important to have. How do, how would you compare the Canucks? And again, we're basing it off of one appearance from last one. They're one and one. They've played twice. Vancouver shall act them in the first one. So I don't want to overreact to one game or one team was uninspired and hurt.

And I think Demko makes a difference, but I think that they're, I think their offensive driver up front is not even close to what he pretended to be for a while. I have no idea why this guy can't play hockey anymore. He does not look engaged at all. And again, I've watched the two games, the flames have played against them. So maybe there's been bad outings. but when your top guys aren't helping you, you're done, you're cooked. Like,

you can't have it. How much does that Pedersen make? 10 and a half, 11 million bucks? And he's a no show. He's having a better year without J.T. Miller. Yeah, but what's that? This is turning into a hubrital thing where it's like, well,

I'm going to work on my defensive side of the. No, I just think, like where is he, is he around a point per game, do you know? Like, I don't have it in front of me.

Sorry, Elias Peterson. Yeah. He has, uh, 20, I think it's 20 and 23 now. Yeah. So if you get him to 80, that's okay.

But I understand rest restoration. Like he's a player that the more you talk to people around Vancouver, they're like, he's very good at hockey. It's definitely not his passion. He doesn't burn to win. And so when you get him right and vibes are good, he can be an absolute difference maker. And at times he's been that this year.

But last night would have been, you know, like watching the flames when they went one, seven and one. And they just, it looked awful. There might be a league trend where these guys are highly, highly, highly skilled. And some days they just don't feel like it. So I'm not going to do it. I don't know. Like when I look at the-

You can do that, Ryan. It's okay to question whether they work their ass off. I think he, he, yes. There's just lots of guys that don't do that. Like he is notoriously flaky. I don't look at Celebrity and Bada are the same way. And frankly, he didn't go one. So maybe I should-

Yeah, but I'm not saying everyone. but there's you can watch the Buffalo Sabres who have had an interesting week. Did they look engaged? And I mean, it's 80s. You watch their one loss in their last five. They didn't. And they were tied after 40,

but they like I think there has always been flaky players in this league. And it's just bright lights in Vancouver when you're making this much money. And it's like, yeah. Well, yeah. Anyway, like Alex Semin was notoriously flaky. That was 15 years ago. I don't know that that's changed. But yeah, like it's a different athlete.

They're, you know, these guys are independent contractors. or the agents from the age of what, 13? Like, that's crazy. Anyway, I can see the chat. They look, could you please not just, that's enough about Vancouver. I just thought it was curious because we've talked a lot about just the flames in their life cycle. What are they? Are you, is it a re-biggle?

Are you sticking with the program? What are you doing? Vancouver's probably got their own. So have you seen anything? Because obviously we came out. What are they talking about? They got a, this is the. I'm not phased.

I feel the same way. We were sitting watching the game last night. And it's like, they're playing hard. And they have been for them out. There were a few games during that, whatever was, the seven or eight games skid where it looked like they may not win all season. But you knew at some point you win games, you play better. And that's what we're seeing is they're winning games and they are playing better.

It's the rodeo analogy. I didn't like the bull last night. But yeah, the flames as the bull rider. looked strong last night. I don't know what to expect on this road trip. I think I know what to expect. But is there any part of, is there any part of you that thinks that we overreacted that?

I've believed it for a decade. It's recently, you've watched a bunch of losses and it's just easy to slide into that way of thinking. No, since Goddrow and them left, I don't, you can't compare yourself to Dallas. because you're not a winning team. You can't say we like the Dallas model when you don't win. So what Don said there is completely out to lunch, in my opinion.

I don't, again, I don't care so much what he said, but you can't say you're Dallas. You're just not. You'd like to be Dallas. I think everyone would be Dallas. Hey, let's just draft some stars in the late first round. Cool, like easy to say, very hard to do. Yeah.

And have you been doing? Have you been a lock for the playoffs for the last decade? like what are we talking about. Now, I don't think, I asked you guys that a few days ago, maybe last week, are the flames as bad as they've been playing or a 32nd place team? Maybe they're not a 30 second place team, but they're still a position to have a decade of deep playoff runs. So my opinion on the team is still the same.

You need stars and you can go and look at who wins in the playoffs. And they build those teams out. and they're really, Tampa Bay did it, Colorado did it, Vegas, a bit of a different animal because they had to come into the league. Every cup winner's got multiple top five picks that are huge contributors. And whether they added them in trade, but via smart management or whether they draft themselves, that's just a fact. Evan Lus St. Louis had, you know, like Beaumester and some really good pie in talent there.

And the positioning of the age of the players that the flames have, doesn't go inside with anything you're expecting diminishing returns for Huberto Cadre, Colman, Weiger Anderson because they're on the wrong side of 30 guys don't have career years after

30 9 times out of 10 yes G.O won in Norris of 35 that's pretty much the O'Don didn't win a Stanley Cup at 35 so I don't I understand what you're saying there I always make a stipulation that's not team success that's one guy

Yeah, and they got what, Flamed out in the second or first round? They didn't win a, they've not had a deep run. Like it's, No. It's a little bit talking down to your fan base when you suggest that what you've built is a winning culture. What it really is, it's mediocrity

that you've been bad enough that you feel like is winning culture. Winning culture is making the playoffs consistently, winning rounds, getting deep into the postseason. They haven't done that since 2004. So if Don Maloney thinks 550, hockey and a wild card or third in your division is winning culture, that might be a big problem about why they don't want to rebuild. They seem to think that's good enough. That's what those

comments really rubbed me the wrong way on. That's not winning culture. Oh, they like each other. Great. Now can you win? Because also that'll help the bottom line, which I know we care about too. It's exactly how I felt when I read that. And again, we're really kind of dissecting comments and it's maybe unfair to Maloney because he did a couple interviews and we were still talking about it. But I can appreciate what he's saying. If you're going to have younger players, you want them in an environment where the culture and the mood is a positive one. And we've seen maybe Vancouver,

things are toxic and it can be tough on younger players and all that. You don't want that. But to talk about we need, we don't need fewer cadres. We need more cadres. We want a winning culture. You've missed the play. This looks, you're on track to miss for the fifth straight year or fourth. I mean, this is not a winning.

You may have, so I was going to ask you, Retro, I asked Ryan yesterday, I mean, you played, you've been in rooms, you've talked to guys. Can you have strong and good culture, strong culture with a team that doesn't win a lot? Because this is not, this is not winning culture. That's the difference. Can you have a good culture where everyone gets along, I guess? Yeah, we missed the playoffs once in Buffalo. We were all best friends. And if you ask any of the guys that were on that team, they loved each other.

So you're in a loud market. It's Canada. It's the biggest team in town. Like no one in California is talking about Pat Verbeek not having a contract. So that's part of it.

And so that's why I keep coming back to this like self-inflicted wounds. Like when you go put POO in front of a camera and then asking these questions, like maybe this is a normal course of business and they're just dot and eyes and crossing T's. But why would you do the interview at that juncture? Like if it's almost done, wait. Quarter pole. It was the quarter pole. Right. Yeah, sure. So I'm of the mind that this is going to get done and they like Craig and they think Craig. has done a good job. I don't know how the front office operates, but it does in this market, just add fuel to the fire when you trot your president out twice and he doesn't really give a vote of confidence. Well, and it also says that he was listening to the response from people and fans and pundits, that he had to go out twice and have. Yeah, we're not totally clear on the timeline there, but it appeared like he went back to what might have been polished things off,

but felt like a double down. Or did you do another interview after the intermission? And and the backlash all came later. I don't know. You know, we've got a house of team next year, too. Yeah, and one with McKenna would be fun to watch. But that's fantasy hockey, apparently. Unlike winning culture at missing the playoffs, three and heroes, that's real hockey, not fantasy hockey.

I think Craig has been excellent at creating an environment, a culture here of being proud to play in Calgary. I think his biggest strength is his relationship with the players, which is excellent.

He cares and they know he cares. I think the first year was very difficult with the number of good players we had at the end of their contracts. A couple of those guys would probably help us right now, but we got through that. I think year two was very strong, but again, you want to keep the pressure on each other and why we say we want to be a playoff team. We don't want to go into the season saying we want to draft in the top five. I don't want to in any way, shape, or form be associated with that because then why are we doing this? Just to fantasize we're going to get a star player. So where I, you know, my, I get the tingles and starts.

Yeah. I also think like it's important to, you know, point out that he's talking about going into the season with that mentality. No one's asked you to go into the season like that. You came into this season talking about 97 points. What we're talking about now is that, given that, you know, a quarter of the season done is done and you're in second to last, at least open a window to show us you have a plan B.

Like, I agree, Don, you should go into every season trying to make the playoffs. Great. But now that you're where you are, is it maybe time to look at some other options? And I think, I really believe, as much as these quotes don't back it up, I believe if they're in this spot in January, they're going to do all the things the fans want them to do. I really do. And I hope you're right. just that he's failed to even hint at it,

And Francis did his article from the weekend. Conroy's in the final year of his contract. Why hasn't he been extended? We keep that internal. We're not discussing that.

We have a certain process. We go through here. Sounds like this guy's been here for 18,000 years and he was running. Like, did he trees, buddy? He hired Brad for living in Arizona. And then brought him in here when he got relieved to be a. Well, he was here before he left, right? That's what I mean.

Yeah. Brad hired him to come in early in his stint to help him in the front office. And then when Brad left, he was elevated. Do we need to go through the careers of the, like? We got younger three years ago when Goddrell and them left and they had no interest in that because they're pissing themselves because oh nobody likes playing here well yeah the guys are like playing here kicking their fucking feet up it's an important it's an important season and upcoming off season it feels like for the flames so it's hard not to micro analyze everything i hope conroy's able to go to work and do what he feels he wants to do okay now i'm wound up here we go why the

fuck is anderson not signing then if it's so great well he wants more money than they're going well we've got lots of money paid a fucking guy where he's swearing left and i know because that's proper management right yeah you're cringing because you're like but it contradicts exactly what this guy's saying yeah he was in talking in hindsight about giving alias well yeah in two seasons is he going to be saying too much money and well maybe we should have done it and then meanwhile it's like rasmus is asking for too much money and they're not doing it like when they're trying to sell this this is such a great culture and we all love it and it well then why why Why is he not signing?

It's wonderful. Look at this culture. Yeah. The difference being is that this is Rasmus' one payday opportunity. That's not the backland contract. But he loves it. I think he does. Yeah.

They get gift cards for grocery stores, shopping malls, different stores, whatever.

And then the people who receive that, instead of just getting pre-wrapped gifts, which is great, there's nothing wrong with. They get the gift cards with enough time to then go out and buy gifts for their loved ones, which I just think that's the best, that anticipation on Christmas morning,

where you're invested in picking the gift, that you know your loved one is going to go crazy about that the giving is is more than the getting I think when it comes down to it. So I love that. And we're going to start the auction, I believe on Wednesday or Thursday, something like that. But it's going to run for for a little over a week, a long enough time that we can get some interest going and get the things up. And we got some great stuff once again to auction off.
