Once again, how was everyone's weekend? You were, you were golfing. I found winter on one of the longest days of sunlight of the year. That's what you're supposed to see, right? Like huge pools of water on fairways, torrential rain, snow, wet feet early. Was there any consideration of not golfing? Yes, but once you pay for the shuttle and have 26 idiots start drinking, it's 26. Yeah, I think we're down to 24 for the afternoon.

afternoon a couple six doesn't make sense that's not for some well there was a couple late people that did have weather forecasts are those tend to be losers that just like are you guys go golf it could we come well you weren't invited no now that you've invited yourselves i think it was gonna be 28 and then we had some people bail it's uh we were catanascus which is amazing they got like two feet of snow about a hundred meters above us like we were that close to the snow line and it absolutely absolutely pissed on a Saturday morning. I think Jack has a video if a little short one here. So this is your weekend.

This was a long day. 5 a.m. bus. I don't feel. And then back at midnight. So would it have been less long? Shorter. Okay. Shorter.

If it was dry out. Oh yeah. Yeah. Because we're cart path only and everyone's miserable and it's, it's tough to hit. shots on grass that's sopping. Here we go.

It's fucked right now. Snowing. This is the scramble. This is the scramble where it's like, all right, fellas, get up and rip one. All the morons went out after playing 18 for another three hours and a seven whole scramble.

Once you get all your stuff out, dry again from the hand dryer and the washer, but it's time to get back out there. So this is how I envision this happened. It's been part of these. There would be a couple jackasses that want to power through and that are super loaded. And they're the catalysts. Yes. And the rest of us are weak-minded.

Or just cold. Wussies that would prefer to leave. Yeah. And they call chocolate and F right off. Yeah. But it's called peer pressure and it works. So here is the conundrum we had. There were some people that bailed after nine that all of a sudden, after being inside for four hours,

like, hey, it's looking pretty good. Let's go for another 18. like oh is that right yeah yeah is that right are you feeling good like jack one in a hot dog the next day yeah dogs look good looks good out there yeah jeez lightening up i think you see the sun's gonna poke out any minute maybe we had the shuttle we could have gone we could have done crawl in can more we could have done whatever um so the the the second 18 narrowly got voted down and the horse race was the happy medium yeah narrowly voted down 12 to 10 yeah two guys are in the washroom dry and they're like getting this road in now do it now yeah anyway good time i'm glad you went out did

well the thing with cananaxas is you got a book years decades in advance well we know good yeah yeah we do kind of know a guy but i'm not sure it matters it uh i think it was better to yesterday than what we had satirate but we had a lot of fun and it is magic out there man to see those mountains i'm going that inspired me jack me you let's grab a cooler got a yeti cooler let's get the out of here yeah well i mean that's how was your weekend I mean, so guys fall from Calgary? We usually, when my buddies go, they get too drunk and then they end up scrapping. I do have a fight on a golf course in the Pinder report, but it was not our group. Everyone got on nice. There's enough fungus. Everyone got along. I was going to post something to social media and then I thought better of it. I don't know. You tell me.

I was going to. Hey, buddies. I hope you're having a great weekend. I just wanted to kind of address something here quick. I know it's the weekend, but I've been seeing some stuff online lately. I just want to kind of nip it in the bud, people talking about specifically Ryan and I that we could tell you and Pinder really don't like each other. You don't get along.

You hate each other. It's just the show is a show and real life is real life. Like this weekend, Ryan's been planning and looking forward to a big golf weekend out in Canaanaskis. and if I didn't like Ryan, I'd be bitter about it or I'd want something with it to go sideways. I'm super happy for it. I can only assume they're having a great time out in Canamascus. And that's what I hope for. That's what I want.

I want good things for Ryan. And I'm sure he wants good things for me. So to everybody who's watching and even you, Ryan, if you're watching, I hope you're having a great weekend. I know how much this weekend is meant to you and how excited you've been for it. And I can only assume that it's going great. Your wishes were granted. Yeah, yeah. It was kind of like climbing a mountain.

You're like, none of it's actually fun. But once you've done it, you're like, man, that was cool. Yeah. Or like you're proud of achieving something. I went back and forth. It was like, Pinders soaking. He's like a wet right now. Oh, that's not.

And then, uh, scored six in the bottom of the last inning to win the second one.

The Anaheim Docks will receive Ryan Paling, the 45th. overall selection, which is a second rounder this year. And the fourth rounder in 2026, which is next summer's draft. Flyers, incredibly thinned down the middle. I don't know what Trevor Zegris is. I know he has been good in this league. It was a while ago. I don't want to be ignorant, but it doesn't feel like a flyer to be.

That, uh, if Pat Verbeek doesn't want him, he's probably not a flyer. Now, who is the other people? I don't know them. Ryan Paling. he was a Montreal prospect for a while. He's kind of a depth forward at this point. So it's a salary dump?

I mean, they're getting a second rounder, a fourth rounder and a pit player. Yeah, he just ain't that anymore, right? That's the trade that Conroy should have made then. What would the equivalent be?

Second rounder, Marty Pospasal and a fourth? I don't know what paling is exactly. That's the thing. What is, I don't know. Have we quit on pailing? Do people still think he's going

to be very good. I don't know. It's not a tremendous It feels like it's a dump. I think they've been trying to trade him for years and they weren't getting what they were asking for and so here we are. Okay. So that's fine. Why didn't we get him? 12 goals and 31 points are paying. What's his contract? Maybe we don't want to go down. He's got some money and he's due to be paid again really quickly. Yeah, but at least you know. You want to get him before. I do agree with you that that price. it's like, yeah, that's something you should be looking at.

Like this. I also think there's probably a lot of teams that are like, eh, don't know about this young man. I think it's not for everyone is what I would suggest. He wasn't for Pat Verbeek. Payling's 26. He's also a sender, final year of a 1.9 million. It's a dump.

It's a salary dump. You dumped them. Yeah, and honestly, to be fair, Anaheim has been a team that everyone's talked about, really trying to make a huge splash and free agency. And if you're going to free up the Zegris money, yeah. Connor. I don't think it's Connor.

Connor's got to your left, but yeah. You've got to plan these things out. Yeah, you do. Yeah. I wish them luck. I hope they can succeed in that. Ducks now sitting on $32 million in cap space. But that was probably before the Zegras dump some more.

Yeah, the websites are catching up here right now. All Zegra's on both. Yeah. I mean, it's for a team that's very thin down the middle, you can, if you're a flame, you'd be asking, well, certainly. And you have cap space. Certainly between cap space, a, I'm not sure, a plethora of picks is the terminology, but they have extra picks. I would feel like, sorry, and I'm talking out my hoop because I don't know what we have for picks and this and that, but it feels like a guy at that price, you should have went and got him, given him a chance to come here. And if you didn't like, move them.

Let his stock go up. Yep. They don't have a second round of this year because they gave it to Philly in the Frost Farabee deal. You don't want to move one of your firsts. I think it's clear you weren't going to get a first for Zegris. And I don't think you want to give up any, well, I don't know. Zegris, you could have got him. 24 last year at 5.75 will be an RFA with arbitration at the end of the year. And after having incredible early seasons in his career, 61 and 65. points his first two full seasons, 12 goals, 31 points last year.

That's the same as paling. He, I mean, we talked about, I mean, Sam Bennett's a different character, but we talked last week, why don't you go out and maybe find that first rounder who was highly touted and then his, this, this is a candidate. Yeah, for sure. I don't think he was particularly happy. We talked about it last year. There was that one goal we showed where he scores a goal and he's just kind of, there's

no enthusiasm. He's a highly skilled guy. It would seem like maybe the motor and give us. shit meter is called into question once in a while. So not to, but to play the other side, what in Anaheim they've been horse shit. Like it. Yeah, he's been passed by the younger guys. Which doesn't give you the okay to not show up and try, but.

Like I would say the Leo Carlson Mason McTavish has passed him and they found a way to work hard. He feels like, man, it feels like he's mailed it in for a bit. How's he going to mesh with his head coach in Philadelphia? given that be Rick Tocott as I recall. Toshae does not feel like a Rick Tocott guy. And I'm guessing Tocott would have been brought in on the He's got a project decision. Yeah.

Right? It doesn't really. I don't know. And to Red's point, if it doesn't work, you just move in the deadline. Yeah. Who cares? But you're right. It doesn't feel like a flyer nor a talk it play. Right.

If he was having a tough time with Elias Pedersen, I think he's closer to that than he is. a J.T. Miller. So there you go. Zegers. My gut tells me we should have taken, I don't know. My gut kind of feels the same way, oddly.

At that price, yeah, yeah, sure. You're talking about needing difference makers and scoring. And centers. And centers. Yeah, no.

And he's not expensive. I don't get, like maybe for his production, but for his potential, he's not expensive. And it's only one year. and you didn't, the Philly didn't give up that much. Yeah, and I will say this.

I don't know that he's a center, but I know he has played some center. Right. But playing at center. Well, okay, so you've got, I'm sure, but you got Frost, Codry, and Backland. So who you move in? If Trevor Zegris can play, those, I'm finding a way to. You can, you know, and I agree with you.

This is the type of cut you should try to make, because it's not expensive, but. This is, and this is a non-playoff team. or how how can we fit him in you need to be looking at things a little different lens in calgary i think they should be but i don't know that they are in the backland maybe more of a fourth line there's ways do you do you say nassum let's turn you into some assets like for sure this is the problem i think that we're to me that's why they didn't get them is because they think they're in different spot than we they've got three centers better than i'm just

and they think that they're going to build and get better and make the playoffs and we're going, well, let's try some stuff. I don't see my faceoffs he had last year. There again, because he maybe wasn't playing the position on one team, doesn't mean Sam Bennett, doesn't mean he can't play that position in his new location. Sam Bennett. Really, it's probably apples and oranges,

but it's a first rounder who is a higher pick. And I don't care of even. Tons of skill. Yeah, I think he's a winger now. He took less than 15% of team faceoffs this year. even qualify to be show up on their face off leaders. So don't be so. No, that's fine. And look, he still, look, he can be a crafty winger and that's great.

But I think the days of looking at like Zegaris being a star that what this trade tells you is the league doesn't think that's a likely outcome. Neither was Sam Bennett. Correct. It's, I get it. Agreed. Like, is it Nolan Patrick? Like, we see all these highly touted guys in the top 10 that don't make it.

Almost every year, there's a couple. Patrick had concussion issues. I think. They all have to say. Zegris has been hurt the last two years. He hasn't played a lot. I think what, 30 some games and 50 some games the last two years? But I don't know.

Talking to some people around the organization, there was a question, I think, of whether Trevor Zegris burned to be a great hockey player or loved being a celebrity in greater Los Angeles. And you can do both. And that's not to say he can't be a good hockey player. But he's still only 24. He's a New York.

guy too you think Conroy loves his New York guy. Well, another, I don't know. I don't, maybe Philly's offer was the best. Yeah, it has to be, I'd think. Yeah. But you feel I would, I'm just thinking New York. I'm like, what about Buffalo? Like, why is it?

Like, if that's all you're having to give up to get a, maybe he's no good. Yeah. But he's 24. You know what it reminds me of is the deal they made here with Kuzmenko in the sense that even if you know, the guy might not be a fit for you. You can get more assets by flipping them later. Yes. Like the flyers did really well with bringing in Kusmenko.

And that might be exactly what there is. A second and a fourth for paling? And then you might get another. And the thing with paling is you're putting Zegras in that spot. So you would think at worst, that's a saw off. If it goes, if the deal doesn't work. Free assets. You gave up a second and a fourth.

So you eat a little cap for a play the piss out of them. And then could you get a second or a third. Look, if he looks great again, you could get more. Yeah. Well, there you go. That's a trade that's done. Done. Job, Jack.

Cross them off your list out there. If you got your list, give them one of those. Do you have a trade list? You know who is on that list, though, is Flames, Defenseman Raspis Anderson. There has been plenty of talk over the last few months and weeks and days and certainly on the weekend. Frank, Sarah Valley, who we will talk to. coming up. Frank.

He put the report out on the weekend, among others. Now this is Pierre LeBron from the athletic. As colleague Frank Serra Valley first reported talks between the Calgary Flames and Raspus Anderson's camp didn't go great recently regarding a possible extension. Flames still have Anderson under contract or the year,

comfortable having him play for them next season. But at the same time, my understanding is that Craig Conroy is now ready to listen on a trade offer for the veteran right-shot defense. whether that's a trade that happens this summer or waits that the deadline, both are on the table. No shortage of interest for Anderson, right shot D of this caliber hard to acquire. He'd be a great fit in Dallas, but how the stars navigate that around their cap is another matter. You'd be a great fit in a lot of places.

He's a right shot guy making four and a half. They can play in the top four. That's a steel in today's cap. This morning, Friedman on his 32 pots podcast saying the same thing. And you don't need to, I mean, it's out there. This is. This is, they are far apart, Red, in terms of Anderson's want slash ask and the flames offer. To which I had zero shock.

I am not shocked at all. I've got the vibe out of Anderson sitting in my martyloop chair. The vibe for me is being Anderson is wanting to try something new and different. Or he's going to want huge money to stay and I don't think the flames should be doing it. Yeah, the thought was that the Pionk deal is something the flames would be happy to go to. Six years times seven million. And the thought was Anderson's camp and say, look, with Jacob Chickren made eight times nine, the difference is $30 million.

Yeah. It's 42 versus 72. Like, that's a huge gap. So that's why we're here. That's how you get here. And I think the flames have loved what Rasmus has been. And I think Rasmus has thoroughly enjoyed his time in Calgary. But here we are.

Yeah. Like, he raised about playing here, but he also. probably sees that there's windows here that don't really match his windows. I got the feeling you guys are going to have to do an emergency. Emergency podcast. Well, I will say this. Schedule open, Dean. I'll say this.

This is the best case scenario for Craig Conroy in the flames. There's no murky, well, you know, hey, well, perhaps. There's none of that. None of the Hanifan Lindholm stuff two seasons ago. And, and in a way, it was the same with Kachuk. it was clear you may not have liked it you'd like some loyalty and this is a little different kutukukuk is obviously he's been very loyal a high first rounder early in his career this is rasmus anderson at free agency a year away from it he's been a good player for you seven really good seasons

got a lot of really good years out of them and now it's clear that that time is over i to me this is a deal that needs to get done sooner than later don't take it into the season i Don't wait for the deadline. Don't wait for the end. You have more candidates potentially now than you will at any other point. No teams will be like, oh, we spent all our money July 1st. We're up against the, no, you've got all your draft picks this year and next. You've got all your cap money for July 1. This needs to get done in the next four days to me.

I also could build you the case that if let's say someone like Aaron Eckblad is coveted in free agency, the teams that don't get him will be like, ooh, this is. way more cost. Florida is a great example. Yeah, like if I go, this would be perfect for Florida because four and a half is way less than what Eklad's going to get on the market. And I'm not going to say they're the same players, but they're reasonable facsimiles of like guys that play the right side on top two pairs.

Maybe not power play gurus, but can go on your second unit if you need, some physicality. They're not perfect matches, but they're not dissimilar. I would still think that if you're going to potentially pass on this, a Rasmus Anderson deal thinking that maybe we'll get Eklad, July 1? Be careful. Who?

Anybody that would be coveting a Anderson, Eklad, Troveirov, whoever else would be in this Orlov mix. No, I think if you want Anderson, you want Anderson and you are willing to go get it. Yeah. I don't think teams that are going to free agency are going, well, let's wait and see what happen that we might be able to get a free agent. I think if you. the assets too good at the price to let somebody else go because what you don't want is to be

And that was like, it was like when you get to 2xL and you know that the shirts don't go any further without going to special sections of the store, you're like, God damn it. Your report came out Friday, Saturday. You were kind of the head of the group and good on that. And then it's just it's, we're not surprised that the ask is probably one where it tells you all you need to know. well, that's a lot of dough. So we need to just say goodbye. Time for a fresh start for both sides. This gives the flames an opportunity, you would think,

to get a very good return, being that July 1 money hasn't been spent yet, that draft picks have not been spent. The likelihood seems very high for a Rasmus-Anderson trade in the short term. Would you agree? I'd say it's moderately high. I think this isn't,

like bluster or cover or spin when I tell you that the flames are absolutely totally fine heading into next season with Rasmus Anderson on their blue line because teams are going to go nuts on the trade market and free agency this summer. And all the same teams that are in contender mode at the deadline are all going to be hungry for a right shot defenseman who isn't afraid to play physically. And all that will add up to is the flames potentially having the premier right shot guy available. So his value in March is going to be no different. It may even be better than it is at this exact moment in time.

So is there a chance that he gets moved this week? Yeah, there's a real possibility. But if the flames don't get everything that they're looking for, they're going to sit back and go, that's fine. We can wait until we're the only team standing that has a player of this caliber and will be just fine. last time they went into the season with significant free agents that i would think it would be silly to suggest it wasn't a big distraction you had lindholm you had hana finn you had zadero it wasn't

just one how much stock do you put in keeping that out of the room that that sort of storm cloud potentially of a guy that oh he's going to get traded at some point when's it happening yeah i think Craig conroy is very sensitive to that because he's lived it already and two i think the other thing that you really want to guard against is this team that has dust and wolf take maybe even yet another step this upcoming season and drags you into playoff contention again and you go, man, really don't want to cut the legs out from under my team in trading Rasmus Anderson

at the deadline. But if you're going to go through this process, you have to, and if you're not going to pull the trigger this summer, you have to make an omerta with yourself, a blood oath that under any circumstance, no matter what happens, the best situation for the Calgary Flames moving forward is to trade Rasmus Anderson. You can't talk yourself into, oh, well, maybe he could be the own rental. No, no, no, that can't be how it works.

So you have to know going in that you're going to be able to rip that Band-Aid off. It feels like the flames have been there so many times, right? Well, we're three points back. How do we trade this guy? We're going to make a push. The ultimate flirt. Don't confuse yourself. What is a good return for Erasmus Anderson?

Do we have an opinion on that? I think it's got to be pretty significant. Like, I don't know exactly what that looks like, but I was talking about this today on the DFO rundown with Jason Greger. And I threw out my hot take, which I might need an oven mitt because it's scalding. And someone somewhere is going to say, Frank, you are the dumbest person I've ever seen, which they say. I hear that all the time. Well, you are Frank. Me. Okay. But I said if I had a choice between the two, I think I'd actually prefer Rasmus Anderson to Noah Dobson.

Why? Am I insane? Well, we don't see a lot of the Islanders here. We know that that was a pick the Flames had that got used to the Islanders and the Hamannock deal. But what, explain why you'd prefer Rasmus to a guy that had what, like 70, almost 70 points two years ago? He had 70 points two years ago. But his career average is actually, I know he's three years younger, but his career. average is somewhat close to Anderson. Like it seems like that 70 point year is an outlier. Anderson's a pretty consistent double-digit goal score from the back end. And I just think he brings a more well-rounded game than Dobson does that I don't want to say that Dobson is a specialist by any means because I think that's a bridge too far. But I just think he does other parts of the game better than Dobson does as a defenseman. And then you throw in the one additional year at a very reasonable cap hit. I think there's a case to be made that especially when you get

into talking about Dobson at nine plus million dollars a year in the long run, yeah, you'd have to pay a trade acquisition to get him and then re-up him on the next contract. But in the long run, is Dobson a better fit for your team and what you're looking to build than Anderson? I really don't know the answer to that. So that's a valuable asset then. I think so. I think it's an incredibly valuable asset. Like I'm with,

I agree with you. I don't, I don't want to drag it into the season. He's going to be a pro. I think knowing he is going to come in. He's not going to be a, he's not going to draw attention to himself, but it's just going to be there.

And then you run the risk for, you know, potential like you, well, like you say, oh, hey, we're good. now we can't trade them. Plus, just injury, all of that sort of thing. I just think Craig needs to, not often he's been in the driver's seat. Well, who's in a position to take Noah Hanifan or, here you go.

The cap hit is manageable for everybody. And the thing is right now with the Florida Panthers, you need dogs in the playoff. You got, Rasmus Anderson's a dog. He would slide right into that Florida team and fit in like a dirty shirt. He can go anywhere. That's the type of player you're getting. I just, if I'm Conroy, maybe it doesn't have to be done because it's not about this year's draft picks,

but I need, I want a deal done before the start of the season. We turn the page. We come to camp with whatever it is we got. And it gives you time to address, depending on what you get in a trade from somebody, you can go to July 1 and add a defenseman of some sort to fill that hole if you don't think you can internally. What, like they have pick 32. Pick 18 and Rasmus. Do you think there would be teams willing to move out of top 10 picks for Rasmus?

Because there are some teams we didn't expect to be picking high there, be it Nashville, Boston, theoretically Utah. I don't really see any of those three teams being a fit, though. That's the problem. Okay. Like I think Utah's top four is pretty well solidified. Yeah. I think Boston, same thing.

Dallas seems like a fit, doesn't it, Frank? Yeah. Yeah, when I think about Nashville, I'm like, they need a center, not a right shot defenseman. So they need both. I think Justin Barron's their best. Anyway, so Dallas, they, we've heard a lot about Jason Robertson, which we can talk about. They trade Mason Marchment. They re-sign Matt Dushain.

They're moving, they're making, they fired their coach. They're trying to get things going. It's busy time for Jim Nill. Why wouldn't the flames have been one of those teams in on Marchment? That's another guy. we talked about Zegris but Marchman well he's 31 year left at four and a half i don't know what does he 25 goal potential in calgary though does he or that's well that's the thing you have to like you have to take everyone and like all right adjust it down a little bit because the team struggles

to score so much but at some point when you add a couple of those guys maybe that conversation changes what are the flames like i i think that that's part of the problem that honestly why Why are we not getting marchments? I think probably because you don't know exactly what you are. Are you going for a playoff spot? Then why are you moving Anderson? Well, because Anderson is going to want not just the dollars. I'm just saying that down the way at Saddle Dome Rise,

I think there's still some confusion as to are we? I do too. How far are we stripping this back? That's the cost. I don't think there is any, like I'm not being funny. I don't think there's any confusion at all. I think the flames know that they are a fringe playoff team. And if they're going to go and become a team that is not just eventually a solid

playoff team, but then trying to vault into the next highest category, that it's going to take time. So by the time they get to where they want to get to, Anderson's going to be 31 or 32. But that's not part of it either. But for that price, that was free 99. The flames have an abundance of cap space. You gave up not even spare parts. what the Flyers gave up for Zegris was spare parts. Honestly, the Flyers had seven picks in the first 64.

They traded pick number 45 and Ryan Paling, who anyone could get in free agency for middle tier dollars. And a fourth? Like, are you kidding? Like, that's the type of player that you look at and you go, why we're, I'm telling you just from the messages I've gotten since I've been on the show, I'm seeing them pop into the right corner of my screen.

Other teams are like, wait, that was it. We could have done better than that. We didn't know that this is what was happening. I'm with you. I just, my only disagreement with you is that you think they have got clarity. I don't.

I think there's, I still think there's pull in both direction to strip it down and go younger and to go for the playoffs. I don't think they're stripping it down. I think they're just finding or. Then why weren't they in on Zegris and like that's, Zegris is a perfect. And they didn't use their capital.

space last year at all. And they're going to be a budget team. They are. They're going to be an internal cap team because at least until the new building is open, they're not going to be able to generate the revenue necessary with salaries being paid out in U.S. dollars to be that team that is competing for top end players and spending to the cap. Well, it's Calgary.

They're not going to compete for top end players and free agents. So it's not so they're competitive again, right? Like you got your Tannivs and Markstroms and Coleman's. Yeah. you have to be good to attract people in free agency. By the way, speaking of Markstrom, I'm glad you brought him up. Could we see a Jacob Markstrom, Dan Vladar reunion in New Jersey? So Jake Allen's up there.

They're looking for a backup. And it's my understanding is those two guys ended up getting along pretty well. What's the market for Allen like? It's the bell of the ball, crazy enough. Like he's the top free agent goalie available by a significant margin. He's been a great sort of platoon mate 1B type guy. Anytime he's asked to be the number one, it hasn't been as good. Is that fair?

Yeah, I think that's fair. But I don't think you need him to be the 1A. You just need him to be the 1B. That's the description of a backup, right? I can give you some solid starts, but I can't on a regular. Yeah. So it's like, would the oilers be like, hey, let's put this guy with Stuart Skinner? Or is it like, no, no, we got to go bigger than that, those two.

I think they have to go bigger than that. But I was talking about where Vladar goes and then what are the flames do with their backup spot everyone just assumes that coolly would be the guy and i think the flames would be comfortable with that if and only if coolly plays the way that he did to start the season as opposed to the way that he ended the season which has left them with a little bit of a question mark as to do we also need a backup backup backup backup i just want to go back yeah i mean the goalie thing will be there down the road just in terms of anderson backup goalie thing doesn't get you horny not not so much i'm kind of on death um tough to please dallas and jason robinson i don't know is it tricky how would

you describe that he's a he scores 20 to 25 he feels like he's got 40 potential he's highly skilled was was injured near the end of the season and then wasn't just wasn't right in the playoffs uh are they loathe to move this player are they ready to move this player what's your take on robertson and dallas i think there's somewhere in the middle they recognize that they're in Capel, that this is a guy who for the second half of the season was one of the very best players in the league.

The first half, he played his way off of Team USA, which is an amazing thing for an American roster to turn down a 40-goal 100-point player in the NHL would have never been possible 10-15 years ago. And moving forward, they know that if they trade Jason Roberts and their team is worse. But the flip side of that is that they also need to pay Jason Robertson that next contract,

which is going to be a raise from 775 to what? Something over 10 probably. Probably. And so then that just compounds the cap situation you already have. My guess is that they hang on to them, that they've taken the temperature of teams to figure out what they'd be willing to offer, that everyone recognizes the position that they're in. They're not going to be getting a great deal.

And you figure it out next summer or at this deadline if your team doesn't play well, as opposed to trying to do that now. If I were the stars, I'd be doing anything possible to unload Dumba and Lubushkin and then figure out the right side of that defense. And you're right, Rasmus Anderson would be a great fit there. I just also don't know that they have the assets to get it done. Yeah. I know Redd asked the question.

In your mind, what? And I don't know if I, maybe a space down. A return for Rasmus Anderson. What is the ask from Craig Conroy, one year of this guy, given the cap hit and all of that? I don't know. I don't know if he's more focused on roster players or futures or blend of both. I don't think that part's been made clear because I think the truth is he doesn't really know. Yeah.

I think in a perfect world, when you talk about the clarity of where this team is at and where they're heading, they'd prefer roster players. They'd prefer guys that they can plug in to this team right in the here and now that are somewhere between 23 and 26 that they can control for a while. And that part, there's not a lot of teams that are willing to cast those guys off of their roster. When I look at the Lindholm deal, I sort of see that is probably the best deal that Connie's made in terms of a return. He got a first, he got a prospect, you got a couple, another late pick and another prospect. and another prospect and the roster player that was Kuzmenko, who, you know, they theoretically could have flipped and they didn't really flip him when he was high, but they did flip him.

Like that to me is kind of the template. Player prospect first. And then if you can get more than that in a bidding war, pull the trigger. Those in-season trades seem to always be a little bit different. I think when you're doing it in the off season, you have the opportunity to maybe shoot for a little bit higher end. Okay. So in terms of the players. roster player yeah yeah yeah and and by the way uh we're all old enough to remember that

Craig Conroy was ripped for that trade the Lindholm one yeah oh look all the trades not not enough not enough I like the Linholm one yeah the Hanif and one yeah the Hanif and one I think he'd have been ripped more if he'd assign that extension than if he would have moved the same thing with Linholm could you imagine if this team had those guys under contract now I think there I I I said this also this morning on the rundown. I think if you're the Golden Knights, yeah, Petrangelo has some LTIR conversations to have for sure,

but they might be in a spot where they need to consider moving Hanofin. You didn't have a great playoffs from some accounts. Well, neither did Chey Theodore, but I think he's the guy you hang on to. Hanifin is a really, this is how I view him, a really nice accessory piece to have on your team,

but not a driver. 100%. And the other flip side to that is, as everyone is going to be blowing their brains out on Gavikov and whoever else is on the market, would you sign Hannafin to seven times seven three? Someone probably would somewhere. Yeah, for sure. So they'd have a window to move him, but it's going to be really- I would not be a tap space for marner tape activities or what? Yeah, that's, I mean, that would be the thought process is that that's who they'd be.

looking at. Is there any amount of panic level with Brad for living, do you think in Toronto? Because Marner will not be back, which is foregone conclusion, it feels like. So there's a hundred point player. And then if Tavares doesn't take this hometown discount that everyone thinks the expectations are that they're, they're the one team that gave Florida a run. I just, what happens if Marner leaves and then are they going to swing for free agents? What are they doing in Toronto if both of those guys or even if Martin is going to go what do they do there i think everyone in this league gets so twisted about oh my god what are we going to do when this guy leaves how are we going to exist it's like the ultimate opportunity you get a chance to

remake your team to do things in a different way with cap space and flexibility and options you've got other assets that you can trade if you want to um you can't when you can't when you're you're signing another guy to an 11, 12, $13 million deal. You're right back in that hell. And I think feeling the pressure, no, I'd be feeling the excitement because that's how you make things different. Yeah. I don't, uh, I don't think Brad for Living is crushed.

I think maybe could you've traded them, that sort of thing, but he is not, he is not that the type of player that he covets or that would seem to be. That still is going to come down. Who's willing to spend the money for that player who has serious questions about his ability to elevate in the playoffs? But someone somewhere is drunk with the idea that they can be the team that actually proves that he can be a playoff player. I'm starting to hear some thought about players maybe going really, really short term with the huge cap growth we've seen and then jumping back in when maybe the cap's $130 million in a few years. I mean, is that something we're going to see more of this off season? I know even with speculation around McDavid's next deal,

if it's in Edmondson, maybe it's a very short one is one of the things suggested. I think it's a case-by-case situation. I don't see Connor McDavid taking a shorter-term deal less than max because I don't know what's his incentive to do so. First off, this is a player that will hate the discussion around taking a shorter-term deal as if it signals that he's not a believer or that he wants to put his team's feet to the fire. Two, I don't think he wants to go through this again, period, because there's not what he's interested in.

He wants to play hockey. Three, he's going to make a pile of money either way and an extra couple bucks here or there. Let's just call it eight times 16. That's $128 million. He's already made $110. Again, not a concern. I don't even see the incentive for him to go shorter term. How much more could you possibly make?

And then the truth is, oh, well, he can have some leverage over his team if they're not making the improvements that he needs to see to win. He's the best player in the world. If he raises his hand at any point and says, I want out, the Edmonton Oilers are going to do whatever it is that he says, because that's how life works. So with that, will Mitch Marner take? less maybe but I would indicate that that is a player who's unsure about a lot of things yeah he wants

to go to the trough again to get paid for an higher aavs sure but he's also probably not sure about where he really wants to play where the most competitive teams are going to be and frankly what the market for him looks like at this moment in time given a lot of the uncertainties that we just talked about I don't think his market is as big as everyone makes it out to be how many teams are really in line to pay that type of money. Carolina and Vegas are the two we've heard the most. Is that fair? Probably, but if we're really being honest, given the lack of playoff success and given what he's already been earning, wouldn't you just make a case that if you're really only

taking a two-year deal, that you shouldn't be getting that much of a raise? I just look I think the way that agents should view this and probably do is a percentage of the cap And so even if you make the same percentage of the cap in three years, that's just a bigger number I I understand how math works I'm saying that agents are drunk on this thought process that uh percentage of cap percentage of cap percentage of cap like that's just it's not always how it's going to be and with the cap rising there's going to be some teams or some players is that caught being sold a bill of goods about what they think it should be. When I just talked about some of the new economic realities that are going to be existing in this sport,

Calgary is going to be just one example of a third of the league that's, we're not going to be at the cap anymore. This is not how it's going to operate? So is it baseball? We're going to start watching. Like I brought that up last week. And I'm not like, if I've got friends that work in Winnipeg. You see Edmonton go to the finals, and you're in Calgary or lived in Buffalo.

Those are not top of the table teams, right? If the ownership's not going to spend, is it because the ownership won't spend to it? Or is it just that the revenues won't get you to what you can spend? And does it turn into a baseball type scenario? It's not going to be that extreme because at the end of the day, there's still a floor and there's still a ceiling. But an owners can always spend whatever they want. They just need to be willing to write the check.

And I don't think the Flames ownership has ever really signaled that they're willing to write the check for a long period of time. Short windows, maybe yes. But when it comes to, I mean, look at how much fans are being charged. When you open the new building, you're going to have new revenue streams that you never had before. And that's going to be hugely important and critical to the Flames long term success. but you can only still charge so much for a lower level seat or for a suite or for whatever it is before there's this market imbalance and fans start to turn away no matter how good the team is. And so when you three years from now or two additional seasons from now,

when the cap is going to be $162 million a year Canadian, you're going to have this imbalance where you just can't charge. enough to possibly make back the money that you're spending in salaries, an addition to operations and running everything else, that you're going to have to make adjustments somewhere. You just are. It's a fact of life. Well, and counterpoint, Oilers top revenue generator ever in a season this year?

Well, I don't, I think for a playoff run, I don't think that the, like, that they've been the Rangers or Maple Leafs or Canadians in the long haul. No. Okay. Well, Frankie boy, and I think it's out there that you are moving on from daily face off in the nation network. This is our, you know, this is a little say hello, say goodbye. And you know what? You're kind of responsible for this Barnburner thing being a thing.

So I don't know who to thank you or punch you in the mouth or what to exactly do. Well, I appreciate that. I mean, I guess I'm probably do a punch in the mouth. We all are, Frankie. no. Here's the deal. Here's the player. He is healthy. He is going be at your training cap to start the season there's no bumps no bruises you know what you're getting he's got one year left you can sign him whatever i think conroy's established that he will do yeah i think with the tan v one i think there was probably other teams yeah we're sniffing and he was like this is we watched tannib go down the tunnel like six times that season and you were just like squinting like which one is the season ending injury and i get that they didn't have the patience to get right to the deadline because we were watching those games too and that was tough.

Yeah. You didn't feel similarly at all about Hanfman because you're like, this guy's durable. He's never heard. Like, you're fine. And Lindholm, I think they got a haul for. Haniffin will see where that unprotected pick is next summer. That's going to be the biggest piece of that pie, obviously. And all that being said, I agree with you. Trade him. I don't want him around. And I like Rasmus Sanders. If he wants to stay, he should stay. But if he's not wanting to stay and you can't sign him to a number that makes any sense. And he's only going to get older and blah, blah, blah, blah. And all the other things that go along with it. I don't, we've been through it. I don't want guys that don't want to,

that are leaving. There's always changes every year on every team, Stanley Cup finals, you change your team. I don't need Rasmus in there without a contract going. Yeah. Yeah. Not at all, no. Oh, he's not on the power play. Well, come on now. Like, you don't need that circus again. Yeah. Uh, because that's what it was. And it's easy to think, sorry, it's easy to think that at the trade deadline, you're going to get more. You don't know. You don't know what you're going to get. And you'll never know what that trade might have been, so just trade it. You won't be able to do a comparison

and no one could rip you. So two things I would suggest on that turn of thought. If you're Craig Conroy, the fax goes out, whatever all those GMs talk. This deal is getting done by either A, night before the draft. Thursday at noon. Or B, July 3. So the losers in free agency

looking for right shot defensemen, it's like, okay, time to pay the piper. You're going to pay assets. And I think it's like Frank said, he's done the other route. I'm going to take my free agents. No, that trade, who knows what he got for offers for any of those other guys. We're comfortable going into the season. We'll take those guys.

And then there's the malcontent part of it. But there's also, you saw what making deals with a three teams, two teams, five teams, you know what that experience is like. And it doesn't make you a home run hitter necessarily. Correct. You did well,

I think on the Lindholm, the other two. He did as well. If we're trading them, get your offers and then be done with it. Don't just don't even worry about it. Anderson leaves. You get what you got.

You move on. Next. Not every team has cap space, but they will have less after free agency, right? It's one of those, because I'm with you. I think I'm a proponent.

Drag it out. The offers will only get better with a little friction. When the pinch point gets tighter, that's when you can, not this time. Create the pinch point. I'm trading them. I best offer at such,

such a time on this day, I'm done. What's interesting, I think if you really want to think about this team that's trying to do two things, at the same time, which is remain competitive, but also actively get younger and long-term way better. It's hard to do both. It's like walking a tight wire.

But what if you traded Rasmus and got a pile of future assets and then found a veteran on a shorter term, two or three-year deal that can play the left side that maybe isn't quite Rasmus, but 80% of Rasmus? Like I keep saying, Dmitri Orlo, like, he's in his 30s. He's not perfect. He's a good defenseman. Give him a two, three-year deal that plugs the hole. and then you have young kids filling his job when he's gone rather than having to pay Rasmus for the next nine years watching him decline as your team gets better. And like you say, you can overpay. That's a lot of money.

Yeah, but it's two years. Yeah, sure. Exactly. We need a guy in the blue line that can log minutes and be a good player for us. You need cap space when you're going to be good down the road. Not this year next. Like overpay a guy in a short term deal. Hell yeah.

Hell yeah. Now the flip side of that is if you get nothing but horses shit off it up. I will give you a second and a fourth. Okay, screw you. I guess we can't trade him by Thursday at noon if that's the offers. It sounds like the insiders. Is that something you can take back to the agent and go, listen, you want a lot of money and this is the offer I'm getting. No one thinks you're worth.

What do you think you are? Yeah, what are you going to get out there free agency if they're only giving me a fourth round pick? That's what will happen.
