Starting point is 00:00:00 How are we doing? I just stepped into the fire. I know. We're very passionate about her last place flames. You got the vibe real quick, didn't you? Well, when I don't even know who that guy is, yeah, that could be a problem. Whoever that son of a bitch is, he's, yeah. He's fucked.
Starting point is 00:00:21 That's right. Let's go, Adrian. Adrian. Do you get the sly, uh, stuff? alone the well i like to think more more tom cruiseish but uh
Starting point is 00:00:36 maybe just the nose maybe just the nose i think that same guy asked me that scientology stuff i think that same guy that uh they called me sly asked me if i'd rather have a nose full of nickels or a million dollars so
Starting point is 00:00:53 um so yeah here we are here we are boys we always enjoyed it because there'd be the odd time it would be very random but we'd have noodles on it'd be like did you see tyson nash took a run on you on the on the broadcast there at the other night he was talking about goaltenders and he brought your name up and it was not in the most bloody little derogatory oh my god like you say the nose full of nickels it's a playful uh relationship you guys yeah we used to call uh noodles jamy mcclennan by the way i think the cat's out of the bag oh yeah
Starting point is 00:01:26 at this point but his five hole was like the gateway to the the West we used to say. If you needed confidence, you just went and shot on on noodles. I know you guys. I know I'm real well there in Calgary, but what a human being. What a dude. Well, it's good to have you on. Everybody's obviously very familiar with you.
Starting point is 00:01:47 You've been doing the media thing for a long time now. Like we say, I guess, I guess this is media in this day and age. Digital stuff and streaming and content creation is. It all feels kind of like a media, but obviously with, look at that signage behind them. She looks good. I know. High end, boys. High end in Utah, baby.
Starting point is 00:02:09 How is life in Utah? Oh, man. Like the sign says it all, doesn't it? I mean, I'm an absolute pigeon. And these guys, even for my show, they're like, hey, let's help the guy out a little bit, all right? Let's throw some money at them. Let's make this thing classy. That's what we are in Utah.
Starting point is 00:02:26 And I think, you know, it's the message and the, you know, it's the message and the, word is out, the building, the facilities, the excuses, let me just say that. There has been so many excuses in Arizona, and I know Utah doesn't want to, you know, be a part of the history with Arizona. They want to be their own thing and they very much are now. But the players, the Clinton Kellers, the Gunther's, their Lawson Krauses, the McBains, they had every excuse in the book not to compete, not to be a good team. And now those excuses are out the window. because this, they have a barbershop in their locker room. You've never seen a locker room like this.
Starting point is 00:03:02 And not like, I'm talking NFL. I'm talking NHL. It doesn't exist. This is as good as it gets. The chef, I mean, I've never seen a house this nice. And that's where these guys basically spent all their time. So Ryan Smith, Ashley Smith, they have knocked it out of the park. I was going to say, I saw it was, I guess it was this summer.
Starting point is 00:03:23 The facility that they were building for like medical therapy, basically a hospital, a sports medicine hospital with the jazz on one side and the mammoth on the other side. It's amazing. Tell you what, as we sit here and finally the sal domes being replaced, and that's like, God, there are some people that. So there's some upgrades you can make. There's some guys that actually seems to money.
Starting point is 00:03:46 My goodness gracious. So a little jealous sitting up here looking at it all happening down. Yeah, it's spectacular, you guys. I hope you guys all get a chance to see it. I think like when you look at teams around the league, they come to Utah. The Vancouver Canucks were there last year. A number of teams have been there last year. Checking out just how good it is and what they can do to better their organization
Starting point is 00:04:09 because it's now a thing. Players are the owners out there going, will you stop it? Yeah. Enough. Oh, yeah. And then you step outside, fellows, and you got the mountains. You got Park City 30 minutes away. If I'm Clayton Keller or Nick Schmaltz, I'm living in Park.
Starting point is 00:04:26 city. I'm taking a helicopter landing right on the Delta center and elevating down to that locker room like Batman. That's how good this place is. Well, we just, you know, we just wanted to shoot the ship for a little bit and I'm not sure that we've ever had you on the radio show, I know, but I'm not sure if we've ever had you here. Just, we're getting into it. We're about about a week. How far into this season are we?
Starting point is 00:04:47 It feels like forever for the flames and what we've got. Longest month of the year for the flames that week. Yeah. Oddly enough, you came in and we were talking about will he play again. I remain shocked. Dylan Larkin played for the Detroit Red Wings last night. Now, didn't have the captaincy letter on him,
Starting point is 00:05:05 but he scored a goal, played for the wings. The crowd kind of got over there. You know, they're all pissed off at him. They were loving him there by the end of the night. Are you surprised that he went, did he have to?
Starting point is 00:05:17 Are you surprised that he played again? And then what about Connor Hellebuck? Does he ever get to the point when he's pulling that Jet's jersey on again? I mean, it's a mess. What's going on around the league, too? And let me just say this, too, that these no trade clauses are an absolute joke. Like, I guess maybe if you're those two players, you get one.
Starting point is 00:05:37 But some of the pigeons out there that have no trades, I'm like, are you kidding me? I don't even know who you are. And you have a no trade and you're hamstringing your general manager and your owner. And you're stuck with these contracts. And now these guys want out. And you got five teams on your list that you can be traded to. it is a joke that is one thing that I think has to change I love the players are getting money are they getting bank or what that's great for the game and I'm happy for the guys but the no trades
Starting point is 00:06:05 they got to go um hell a buck I mean how like in a perfect world can you imagine how hard edmonton is beating the drum like emminton doesn't have a goalie still like how's the hell do they not have a goalie like it's beyond me like I I'm an emminton guy grew up in sure park I want to see Connor McDavid. I want to see Dreis out of win a cup, but they ain't winning a cup with the goaltending they had. They had Pickard and Skinner. They didn't know who the number one goaltender was going into the final game in the Stanley Cup final.
Starting point is 00:06:35 That's a problem. Did you know who Bobroski's backup was? No, you didn't. You didn't. No one does, right? But you got him in Emmettin. Last year, it's Connor Ingram. Like, I love Connor Ingram, but he's your number one guy.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Like, oh my God. Like, please stop it. So, Dylan Larkin, I loved cousins last night, giving it to him about the seat. This guy is like the old school cloth. Guys want to murder this guy. Just that little smile he's got and he's just giving it to Larkin about the seat. You can't wind to the reps anymore. You're not the captain, buddy.
Starting point is 00:07:10 That's beautiful. The no trade thing one is funny. Like, I remember last year, Weiger went to Utah. And it was like, I think only Mata had trade protection. Yeah. You're like, old Mata played like half the seat. Holy mana. And I get it.
Starting point is 00:07:24 Like, if you want to stay somewhere, we're happy to not trade you. But then asking for a trade and using the list, that's not what these were made for. No. Again, it's mind-boggling and it kills your team when you're stuck. Like the Emmington, like I said, that's the best example. They are frothing at the mouth right now to get Halibok to bite on going to another Canadian city just down the road in Emmetton. Same weather. I mean, all the stuff, but clearly he doesn't want to go.
Starting point is 00:07:53 But if you want to win, I'm going to the Emington Oilers. It's as, I mean, clear is that. That's all they're missing in Emmetton. You can fill all the other holes you want. I believe that. They have not had a goaltender. And this is an organization that always had goaltenders. Ken Holland was the general manager there forever.
Starting point is 00:08:11 He was the king of goaltending in Detroit, but not in Eminton. I mean, I don't understand it, and it's still an issue. They're still spending 2.5 on Jack Campbell this year, by the way. They tried. They just haven't found the goals. Who? Exactly. I just wanted to check.
Starting point is 00:08:29 Not one, not two, three Memorial Cup championships. Really? With the Camloops Blazers. And all three with Ryan Huska, the head coach of the Calgary Flames. What we're, I mean, when the debate was on, Connor's Derry, first round pick from, what,
Starting point is 00:08:48 2020 put on waivers yesterday. He clears. He's going to the American League. The argument is, oh, this team, they need goal scoring and they're taking one of these guys that could baby give it to him. He's going to the American League. What the hell they do? And this Ryan Huska, he's he's, he's, he's, he's, the guy for young players,
Starting point is 00:09:03 we talked about it. Being a coach of a team, when you go into the season and everybody knows, you're not making the playoffs. This is a rebuilding year. This is about developing talent, but the coach is always about wins and losses. What's going through, because you would know him well, Ryan
Starting point is 00:09:18 Huska's head as he's watching a team that doesn't have much talent losing 6-1 twice to the Seattle Cracken. And there's some shortcuts, shortcuts being taken. It's just we're a little surprised that this guy is already in the American League by game four of the season. And a lot of it's got to do with his relationship with Ryan Huska. Yeah, I know Huska super well. We were 16-year-olds coming into the Western Hockey League. You know, this was a guy you knew was going to be a great head coach in the National Hockey League because he used to just sit back and watch and shake his head at his two idiot
Starting point is 00:09:58 wingers, Shane Donne and myself. We were called the wrecking crew. And that's not really how he played, but he kind of backed us up. He was always in the perfect position. He was great in the face-off circle. And he would just let me and Donor just wind it up and go. So love Husk, love him. He has been dealt a real difficult situation.
Starting point is 00:10:20 Obviously, you know, you want to be in the league, all those things. And the records matter to the coaching staff. They just do. And I am all too familiar with it in Arizona because we went through rebuild after rebuild, after rebuild. No player wants to be a part of it. No ultimately general manager wants to be a part of it at the beginning. And no head coach certainly doesn't want to because the wins and losses, they add And they matter in the end.
Starting point is 00:10:46 Now, when you look at Arizona, God, we went through six, seven years of rebuilding. And it took last year the captain, Clayton Keller, going, this is a joke. This is over. We're not rebuilding anymore. We're not talking about rebuilding anymore. We're making the playoffs. Like, it's time. My God.
Starting point is 00:11:00 Right? And that was now the bar set by the captain. But as far as, you know, and the rest is history. This team in Utah is going to be good for the next 10 years. Them in Montreal, look at the contracts. I think there's one player. on Utah it makes over 10 million. The rest are set like Dylan Gunther
Starting point is 00:11:17 makes 7 million. This guy's going to score 50, 60 goals this year. Nick Schmaltz, he's what, 7, 8 million? Like it's unbelievable, but you had to go through that shit to get to where they are today. And it's not easy in a Canadian city because I know the pressure, I know everything
Starting point is 00:11:33 that goes into that. The fans, there's a new building coming. I mean, nobody wants to hear the word rebuild. But sadly, that's the only thing the Calgary Flames can do is blow this thing up and rebuild, but you're not going to get the buy-in from Ryan Huska, and you're not going to get the buy-in from the players. They're just not going to accept it. I mean, you guys know, I mean, you guys played. Nobody wants to be a part of that.
Starting point is 00:11:58 What was, sir, you want to keep going flames? Up to you. Go ahead. What was Rock Bottom for that? You talk about the huge change from great owner from the pile of rejects that seemed to run the coyotes. What was rock bottom? Was Morello in an unfinished 5,000-seat college rink after being convicted? Was it, you know, Elman and Moy's going bankrupt on what was always a property play, putting the rink in the wrong spot? I still think it would work great. They just never had the rink in the right spot or the right owner.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Yeah, you could wind me up all day long. I mean, this is the thing. You move the Ebiton weather. Is that the Wienwright? No one's coming to watch. I'm sorry. Not for 42 games or whatever. I don't care if you get the best teams in the world.
Starting point is 00:12:38 You're just not doing it. That's what happened in Arizona. You put the rink in the right spot. and I'm telling you still to this day, the Toronto Maple Leafs came to Arizona, to hang out for team building, for golf, for sunshine. Players want to be here.
Starting point is 00:12:53 You just have to have the rink in the right spot. If you do, the players will come. You know, you look at Vegas, you look at all the teams that are having success. And then on top of it all, you have to have ownership. That is the number one thing I've learned from where we came from to where we are now with Utah.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Ownership matters. Money matters, doing the right thing. building a community, all those things matter. And, you know, it could work here in Arizona, but the mullet, oh, my God. Like, they need to, they need to, like, demon possess that thing or cleanse that place. It was our ownership group, 5,000 seats for the NHL. That was, that was tough.
Starting point is 00:13:31 That was really tough. I can't imagine getting up for games. It was fun when Connor McDavid would come to town and your 10, you know, seats off the ice, watching the best player in the world. But as a home team, it was tough to, to, come to the rink every day and to think and believe that you're in the national hockey league. Is there any issues that are going to come up? You say like Arizona, if they had a rank and obviously Utah is a great spot and Vegas.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Edmonton might be appealing because they're competitive. But are these Canadian markets in trouble? Are we worried about that at all? I think it's a real thing. I do. When you look around the league and it's funny, it wasn't really like that for, at least for me, when I played, I was just happy to play anywhere. right, especially a team that wanted you, but, you know, with no state tax, I mean, you look at the vaguses that, you know, any team in Texas, Nashville, Florida, I mean, it matters.
Starting point is 00:14:24 It matters at the end of the day. Your paycheck is significantly different. I mean, what's, you know, Brady Kachuk is making another $3 million. I think just on the tax alone, you know, on top of what they tax you in Canada, you know, in general, right? So the only thing the players have gone for them is, I guess, the exchange rate, would offset that a little bit, but I would be worried a little bit for sure. You know, there's so many great cities and places to play now with Sunshine.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Were you ever close to coming back to Alberta to play it up here? I would have gave my right leg. To play in Evanton, are you kidding me? Like, I'll never forget. I was at the end of my career, and I was literally calling everybody I knew just to get me a tryout at that point. I mean, it always ends bad,
Starting point is 00:15:15 unless you're a real good hockey player. I certainly wasn't. But even the fact that I was going to play in the Joey Moss Cup, I was so excited when, you know, I was talking to Kevin Lowe and some of the management group there. It never ended working out, but I can't imagine playing growing up in Shrew Park,
Starting point is 00:15:32 Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messia, Sateek, and all the boys, right? I mean, my heart still belongs in Ementon to a certain degree. But to put on that oil jersey
Starting point is 00:15:42 would have been special. What about the knee paw on paper cranes? Was that good? Oh, yeah. You know what it's good about it is because I was with her boy, noodles.
Starting point is 00:15:53 You know, it was literally like a paid vacation going over there. The shenanigans we got involved with, I mean, you can't even make it up. You literally can't. Like, noodles is in that.
Starting point is 00:16:06 He looks behind him and there's this old lady. She had to be about 80 years old. She's smoking a dart and she's the red light. She's turning on the red light for the goal. And she's smoking a dart like in the rig. I'm like, well, where are we?
Starting point is 00:16:19 Like this is absolutely insane. It was like a paid vacation over there. It had so much fun, so many laughs. And clearly it was a good way to wind your career down. How's the Amazon stuff going? What are you doing? And are you on tonight's action or no? No, no.
Starting point is 00:16:35 Not tonight. Next week I will be in Washington, Washington versus the Montreal Canadiens. Amazon is like next level, something I've never experienced in my entire life. Again, a lot like Utah, how they treat their people, their broadcasters, their entire crew is first class, where we stay, how we fly, just all of it, right? And they're trying to take it to another level, which it sounds like they have signing that 12-year deal. So things are certainly changing in the broadcast world, and it doesn't surprise me that
Starting point is 00:17:06 Amazon Prime is a part of it. So like we sat out for a whole year and missed a paycheck for a whole year. Like it was really worth it, right? We really set to toll. Like we were that. Big win, boys. Oh, yeah. You know what?
Starting point is 00:17:21 And that's funny. When I go in the locker room and guys like blow me off a little bit because it happens, right? Like you're in there. You're trying to get notes. You feel like a creepy, you know, media guy, right? Like I'm like, what have my world come to? But I'm like, are you kidding me, you little shit?
Starting point is 00:17:36 like what we did for you guys. Like we sat out an entire year. And I was part of the one before that also. So I missed like a year and a half. And I didn't make a lot of money. I didn't score a lot of goals. So that money was big to me. And you look at what this did.
Starting point is 00:17:51 I just hope the guys today. And I know a lot of them do. I don't want to pigeonhole everyone into that because they do get it if you follow it. But man, did we pave the way for these guys? The pensions now that they get, right? Like the money that they're getting. we didn't want a salary cap. God forbid.
Starting point is 00:18:08 It was the best thing that ever happened for the National Hockey League. We didn't have a plan B. I remember getting up one time going on, hey, guys, it's January. Like, do we have a plan B at all? Like, this plan A isn't really working. Well, oh, God, like imagine getting that money back right now
Starting point is 00:18:25 because I could use it. Instead, I got the NASCAR rolling, boys. Let's go. It's a great neon sign. I can bear this. water my tree next to me here. Where do we catch you? Where do we get the Nashcast?
Starting point is 00:18:40 Where do we catch that? It's on Mammoth Plus. I'm telling you, every team now is starting to talk about it, right? I can't imagine doing this show in Calgary or Edmonton with all the past players. And all we do, it's like the Peyton Manningcast. We have guys on. We hot stove. We watch the game that's going on with Utah and who they're playing.
Starting point is 00:19:00 Our first game is October 17th, first the Evanton Oilers. Terry Ryan's going to be my co-host. Oh, yeah. And we are going to be chopping it up, slapping it around, and we're going to, like, we just have guests on. We tell stories. That's what every hockey fan wants to experience, right? Is some of the stories that we tell.
Starting point is 00:19:19 They're unbelievable. And we let them fly. Nice. We appreciate it. We will be tuning in, Nashir. That sounds like. Good luck in the next movie. You have six others.
Starting point is 00:19:31 You and six others. Let's go, Adrian. See you, pal. Appreciate your time. See you, boys. Good stuff. There he is. Tyson Nash on the Nashcast.
Starting point is 00:19:43 Yes, indeed.
