A salute, no doubt, to the Flames new captain. My man. My man, Michael. I'm just happy because you've been pumping his tires for so long. Since the old. Old studio. Yeah. It's the old old studio I've been saying,

this guy one day is going to, the cream will rise. To the crop. It's the crop. Crop will cream. Top the crop for Michael Backland today. Yeah. Did we, did we get hoodwinked, Dino? No.

Because I made, I had a phone conversation yesterday. Yeah. And somebody gave some bad info. to why we think we have bad info. No, I talked to Friedman unrelated yesterday. I just happened to be talking to Elliot yesterday. Yeah. And he's like, yeah, I can't be talking to anybody in Calgary.

It's, I'm sure they're not very happy with me where I was off on term and dollars. Both, yeah. Within a 24 hours, like 24 hours prior to the actual number coming up. Off by a million and a year, like off by three million on the total. Elliot's not usually off. So my question is, did the, did people maybe float that so that the real deal came out?

I was kind of saying. Oh, look at this. Do you feed some, some info to the media to get it out there and just see what the reaction is? Connie? Conspiracy theory? Now, that said, if you came back and said,

hey, Mike, that whole 5.5 times three, we put it on the Twitterverse and people think we're crazy so we can't do it. How about two at 4.5? biper. I don't know that that's a great. I don't think that's how that negotiation goes. No, I think it's done at that point to be honest. But it's funny, man, I went and I, because I, when I saw it come down, I was like, didn't we, because near the end of our conversation, which we went on for

quite some time yesterday. Yeah. You had said, for you, what's like, what's the deal? What's the number? And it was like, like, two, four point four, four, like, that's, it ended up being kind of exactly where we felt it should be. Well, and you'd said, like, earlier in the week, like, just off top of your head, what do you think? And I'm like, oh boy. And what I said was four in a quarterish. And it was like, geez, that's, you're like, too light, not going to happen. And like, I think we have to view this as a win for the flames given that we didn't really think that this was a realistic outcome at points this week. Rhett, give me your thoughts.

Sounds fair. Right? And it doesn't feel like Backland extorted the team over the sea. It's a hometown discount. It is, which is beautiful. I don't know. I don't know that it's a hometown discount, but it's certainly not a hometown screw job. I'll stay and I'll be the captain, but I need years. I think, I see, I think it is a hometown discount. I do too. I think he could have been closer to five. I think he probably could have gotten three somewhere come summer. This is, and this is another thing that we said yesterday. If you want to be here and you want to be the captain, then you take a little less and you show that you want to be here. I think he did. I think in term, maybe not so much in dollars, four and a half.

Just to argue it. Just to argue it with you. I get what you're saying. And I'm kind of jumping on you, but I know where you're going with it. Yeah. Who's giving them three times five? Somebody stupid like Columbus,

a bad team for sure. That doesn't make it. No, and I agree. But when we're talking about market rate, it's the highest offer, not the most rational, not the most reasonable, not what smart gyms do. July 1 is crazy, right? Right?

This is better than a July 1. The cap is going up. teams are going to have some money. He's a center, which is part of the team. Every team needs centers. He's a 36 year old center. Yeah.

I think he'd get a three year deal somewhere. And that doesn't mean that this is a screaming deal, right? But it means that he probably is foregoing a year and a bit of money by doing. Yeah, with a wink and a nod from Conroy. We're going to sign you again. Oh, is that?

Oh, I didn't see. I didn't see this. It's that in the press release. I didn't see that. that wink and nod part. If he wants to play well and come back on one year. I mean, we're three years away.

Like, wouldn't that be a great problem to have that you need to be a part of the organization for the rest of your life is what every want to do after you're here. You're good to take the contract. So, I mean, whether you like the deal, it's fair, unfair, whatever, he's still Michael Backland.

He's the captain. I still, I don't know that he's, maybe he is the guy that is like, get on my back, boys. Let's go into battle. maybe he is that guy maybe he needed this to draw that out of him maybe this is that kind of confidence he needed maybe it's been there the whole time no for everyone involved you just you hope you hope it works out you're happy for him because obviously it meant something to him we heard that all the way along and clearly that's the case he stays he gets the sea i i wonder if we spend too much time talking about the captain sea

Finally. Please get me to 31 or enough years of service, 30 years old, where I can finally go to free agency as a UFA and sign a big deal. Rangers or lease can pay me way too much money. I can't wait until I'm 31. I just have to get to 31. All those guys were signing at 31. Yeah.

And now it's eggshells to sign equity north of 30. Guys are jumping out of junior and putting up numbers now. Like would anyone be surprised if Baderd has a point per game season this year. So, but so, but that goes back to the whole issue with it. Like, we are, we've got older guys. Like, backland can be the best backland he can be. And it may now be the best move for the team. I think we're all philosophically on the same page about what could happen this off season, about a reset and getting younger. And they are going to get younger, but not at the top of the roster. We're around the edges, right? It's going to be the fourth line and the third

pair and but again that's we get back into the what is connie want to do and what are connie's marching orders and what is the owner want and what is the owner traditionally wanted and that's go win now boys go win there's one way out of this win yeah because because nasm cadry's 33 in a couple days here like huberto codry you got to win for lindom's got to win because he wants contract backland's got to win because he's getting old codry you're not going to be moving any of these guys. If there's success with the flames, maybe it opens doors.

I don't know. But you are in it. Start winning. They started the offseason with six free agents, Dino. DeFoli, traded. Sharon Govich comes in. Younger and a third.

Okay. Wasn't it seven? I guess if you include Shillington, yes, he's kind of a weird, I don't really know where to put him on. But yes, it was seven. So, DeFoli's been traded, back has been re-signed.

Yeah. And they enter the season looking like Lindholm, Tanev, Hanofan, Zedorov, and Shillington will be UFAs. And Connie said, I can't go into the season with six, seven UFAs. He hasn't, but he's still got four to five depending on any of you, Schillington. I have two questions. We'll start off with this one.

So now with this, I don't think this really has much bearing on it. It's money committed moving forward. Elias Lindholm, do we have any feel? any has our opinion changed because the last time we talked about it it was it was horovat money but the horvat money was now getting that's maybe rearview mirror for lint holmes up from one horvettes sign it's north of that now to your point i just how many 30 year old guys can you have and if you have cadry backland down the middle is that enough that you could move on from lindholm and still be competitive or if you're moving Lindholm, are you now out of a window of winning?

I guess it depends what you get in return. You need kids to come along. I think he got to let him go. And again, to your point, Rhett, it's like he might be the one guy you'd want to sign. You've already committed elsewhere. Now it becomes a dangerous signing. Yes. He's the only guy that's old that you've got commitments to beyond 30.

And it's like, okay, maybe we had to overpay a little, but like, this is a guy. 100%. You already got Huberto. You already got cadre. You committed money to Uighur on the back end. You've got now Michael Backlain, not a big money, but locked into it like how many 30-year-old core pieces do you want? I was flipping out last year at this time with those signings.

I'm like, what the f-are-are-are-weider one? Yeah. I think the Uyghur one will be just fine, but the Huber one's a nightmare. Yeah. The what is fine? I think the Uyger one is going to be fine. Weir-er's fine. You're right.

But the Hubert-o, and look, it took until January, before we really saw the real Uighur, because before that it was like, what the hell was this? Here's the Florida guy. Here's the thing. How about like the Uyger one? Fine, whatever.

Because he's not that old, right? Yeah. Fine. It's that you did, you locked up two guys that had never played together in your city long term 30 plus. Yeah. Before you saw him.

Before you saw him part of your squad. Even if you only do one. And because you did that, you had to trade Monaghan and a first. to make room for those bastards. But if you don't sign Hubertow to the long term, to the extension, you're not right? Do you know what I mean?

Like there were so many other ways of handling this. It was a chips and move, right? And you didn't know how the group was going to work. Totally. Don't like it. And now you're, we say it over and over. We might lose Lindholm,

the one you want the most out of all four of those. forwards that we're talking about. Lindholm, Backland, Cadry, and Hubertoe. Who would you have the most faith in, for, pick one to build around. You pick Lindholm.

You pick the youngest. Right? Yeah. Like, not the other three is Captain Mike, sorry, but if I'm picking, it's Lindholm. Yeah, and that's a third center.

That's not the same. No, it's not. Right? It's not. And that's not. And that's not. And that's just it. If you don't bring

Cadre you can have Lindholm and Backland and I like that combo better than what we're going to be stuck with. I agree. And if they bring Lindholm back, I think we've really, they better be good if they do that, right? Well, exactly. They had better be real good. Real, real, real like third round, go to the finals, good. Beat Edmonton in the playoffs. Yes. That rivalry going. It's funny, there's a lot of people, maybe not third round, but there is, even with what happened last year, you'd think there

would be some people just, there's more people who think they're ready for a bounce back, that they will be better to much better this year. And usually hockey hockey punness, it's not a big clock of positivity most of the time.

So not that that means anything, but I think there are a lot of people who think that the coaching change and that's going to make a difference. He would have can't be that bad. The goal tent can't be that bad. The power play's got to be better. Now. Anyone else getting better though?

That's the, well, here. You know, I was going to say, Nazim Kodry, we never talked about you for the captaincy. Really? That game against a bad taste in our mouth from that Chicago. That Chicago game.

Despite everything that went wrong last year and your year was, his numbers were not terrible. Right? He was a freaking all-stars. Yeah. If that's a bad year, what's a good year? I was going to.

And so, and that's a guy who has room to be better. We taught, when you talk about who can be better? The goalie, Huberto. I think those are the first two that you really jump to. Hey, Naz, you, you can also be better. The problem is he ain't getting younger. No. Right?

Like, again, you're right. Needs to be better. Has to be better. Getting older and will he be better are the questions I have. I just think like how to. Because because as mad as you might be about Darrell and this and that, when you go out and perform the way you did against Chicago in a must-win game that's shameful. And I think it speaks to your character because you weren't concerned with your team or anything else.

You didn't care about anything at that moment. And it raises red flags in my eyes. that's a concern for me. You may as well. You're worried about you or are you worried about the team? Yeah. It looked like the guy was shopping for vacations. Yes.

He had a flight. Like, yeah, it's where we're cruising, honey. Oh, yeah, okay, I'll be a minute, boys. It was one of the worst, like that. I don't know that I can remember watching a flame player quit and like decisively saying that word. That's a harsh word in professional sports. And it's like, boy, you better be right if you're saying that word.

But that performance in a huge game against one of the worst teams in the league, was atrocious. Be better. He will be better, but he's got to be better. He went from, well, he be better though. Yeah, he'll be in an all-star game. Like maybe there was no better choice, but there wasn't. We're going to say that he's going to be better and he went to an all-star game.

It was funny because Frank sat down with him at the all-star game. And Frank said the Calgary Flames make the playoffs, if what? And Nazim filled the blank in. It was like, when we start playing as a team and you're like, oh, wow, okay. Okay. From that point on, he was dog shit. He didn't do anything to help me. He's like, okay, he knows the problem, but he ain't fixing it, apparently.

He's not a fixer. Idea guy. I can relate to that. There you are. Don't judge me by my actions. Yeah, no. Judge me only by my words, by what I say. Because my actions, I mean, that's not.
