How's Franz, Nashville, Tennessee? You frequent? I've never frequented, but I'd love to try France. Fran. Fran was a neighbor at the lake, at Emma Lake. Bill and Fran, great people, wonderful people. So yeah, of course. I got to think of France.

Beside Tavern, be deadly. I was wondering about Nashville because watching obviously the series in Nashville, so everybody, we love Nashville. We love Nashville. I was just wondering if, if 2024 us went to Nashville. And Ryan, you and I were there about a year ago. Yes, less. now you and you know what this is a conversation red and i can have you just leave me out of this one

sure um you know because the engine never stops over there high kicker is absolutely still thumbs up for nashville but i don't i just wonder if we would be able to would we would still enjoy it we would still have fun uh i wonder if ours would be more like a day all drink early bedtime kind of a thing how our might be different than maybe say 10 years ago and i'll be honest with you i was there last march and i don't want to be in those bars after seven eight o'clock yeah it's very busy last year when we were there for the draft we were at tutzies and you couldn't move and the thing is to tutsies is what two three stories and it was still shoulder to shoulder i love the afternoon because i'm there for the music i'm not there for the people and just sloppy bombed ryan

I think when you're Morgan Wallen and you're in a bar in Nashville, you draw a bit of attention to yourself. I'm guessing it's probably one of those things. But you know what? My understanding is a little subdued yesterday about 10 minutes after game time was after the final buzzer. I guess Broadway was a little bit kind of. A little somber.

And this was, are we, uh, we all, we boast. And we love how great round number one is. We need some work done here, fellas. We need, yeah, some guys to get it together. or we're going to have some very short series. We could have seven or eight series ending five or less. And already that Florida one could have been done.

Yeah, although I did like the way Tampa looked. That's the first time they've had the better goalie in the series. If they want to keep that, that would help. Yeah. There was still one kind of softy on. And even there, because they were up three to nothing. And then whenever that goal from Ekman Larson, now it's four to three.

I think it was a little tense there, a little pucker. Jesus, these, I still think obviously, we all think Panthers are probably going to find a way here. But even those bloody Panthers, we need this. We need this. This series has maybe been the most disappointing based on how good we thought it would be versus how it's gone. But if Tampa wins in Florida today,

now you're going back to the bolts home ranked, a win away from saw and things off. Like this still could be a series, but stating the obvious, we need to see a good Tampa performance tonight. Yeah. And for there to be serious drama, one team is going to have to be

with their backs against the wall. In that respect, we have a lot of options. We have many candidates then. Yeah. For teams to come back from a 3-1 series lead. I would bet though, and I don't have the numbers,

but I would bet the math is not in their favor. No one has a 2-2 series. No, Dallas could make it a 2-2 series tonight, but wouldn't it be wild if we had five or less for every series in the first? Would it be wild if we didn't have a game? It's gross. I don't like it.

Yeah, that would be sad. Yeah, and look, it's, you know, a week ago, we were talking about how Winnipeg was the worst possible matchup for Colorado and Colorado's goaltending was shit. And like, these storylines change very quickly. But at this point, we need at least a couple of these series to go along. Okay, so let's go through it. Yes.

Of these series that are 3-1, and we'll exclude Dallas, obviously, because that serves two to one. And we'll also exclude the capital. Rangers series. Again, thanks for getting in there, Washington. Yeah, that's great. I really appreciate you for. I'm going to noted, like, maybe that's why a team with like a minus 40 goal differential or something close to that, probably didn't belong in here. But hey, congrats on your, uh, you know, take it to the dance. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I went how we thought it went. It would go.

Quickly. That was another one of my kids. She's like, well, the Red Wings would have been better than that. She's right. And I think she, I think she's, I think you're, right yeah i think you're probably right but i had pat kane on broadway against that crew i mean yeah the detroit building would have been rocking oh you know all right sometimes you see that hey when teams have a big push it gets just getting to the playoffs that was their big win you know they they expended all their energy all of their emotion was in just getting in and then they had no chuckling grin either that or they were uh playing the best they could and they're not good or badly or the other teams soiled themselves. Yeah, that could be too. So yeah, we lacking some drama. We have the

potential for a lack of drama here in round number one. Who's coming back? You're going to go through them. Okay, we'll go through it. I see Jack's calling it up there. You see it. Let's start in the West. Now, we've already excluded Dallas Vegas at the top of your screen because that's not a 3-1 series lead. It might be, but it's not yet. Now, Colorado up on Winnipeg, three to one. This has been a drubbing in a lot. Colorado has scored with great ease against the presumptive Vesna favorite, Carter Hellebuck. Colorado was up 4-1 in the game there, and they were still buzzing around Winnipeg, Winnipeg.

Bantam team. So we can, I mean, we can go through it and then hit the individual. So do we have hopes here on this one having some drama? Not really, no. I definitely think Colorado continues to Colorado. Colorado is heads and tails better than Winnipegote. our heads and shoulders, but yes. If they had tails, they'd be up there too.

So again, now Vancouver. We were flipping coins yesterday. That's how close it is. You got it as a coin toss to Winnipeg and Colorado? Yeah. So how did I work with the Vancouver series? Because it's three to one. And in game one, they had to come back.

Didn't they score two? Yep. They're down one-nothing and they went bang, bang, goals 12 seconds apart, place them up bananas. Weren't super impressive in game two, I think, either, but got the win. Lost game two. Sorry, lost game two, game three.

The Smith comes in. They eke one out. And then it was... I think this is a series, too. You think there's some... I do two because of the goaltending. And Nashville, to be fair, has done a very good job of just minimizing

any sort of chances against Soros, who is the best goal he left in this series, because Demko won't be back this series and maybe even beyond. So I think I give tons of credit to Vancouver for not quitting and for being in a spot to close it out. But I also wouldn't be surprised if Nashville just sort of continued to wet blanket the shit out of them and got more saves. Edmonton is up three,

one one one on the Kings. You held them on one goal and you didn't win. That was, yeah, and it was a non-event fest in a lot of ways last night. Skinner gets the shutout one, but I don't know how much. I'm not seeing what I thought or was hoping to see out of L.A. Yesterday might have been the closest to it, right, like in the sense that. out shooting them out. They deserve to win maybe.

I don't know, but you score zero goals. One power play really, right? That was it for, if you can hold the Oilers to zero even strength goals, you probably should win. They did not. No. That feels like a missed opportunity.

And for the Oilers, now it's okay. If we win at home, we don't have to get on a plane. We can just hang out here and host round two. Well, I guess, I don't know what happens. I might have to go to Vancouver. But point being, you don't want to have to get back and go to L.A. Two more flights, long travel, get rested. this tournament is about staying healthy

and taking care of business as early as you can. That's what crushed you guys in 04. Ret. He played so many more games in Tampa when you showed up in the final. 7-67. I just think Edmonton's been better. That too. Yeah, they have been better.

Because even the Kings, the one win comes in overtime. And they blew a big league in that game too. Florida, Tampa, as mentioned, the Panthers yesterday scoring that game was, 6-3. So yeah, lightning convincing victory. But so what kind of hope here? Out of the east, it's, I would say it has more hope than the others. I agree with you, pal. Yeah.

Which leads us to, we'll end with the, we'll Carolina, New York Islanders zero drama. Yeah, that feels like an inevitability. Congrats on getting your one win Islanders. You've been heavily outplayed, no chance. And the one area we thought you were good, you've been leaning on Varlamov, not Sorokin. Yeah. He's not good in game three.

Moving to the Boston, Toronto series. Oh my God. This is when people, a guy, you hate the Leafs, I'll always want the Leafs in the playoffs. Just because. Yeah,

for this. It brings a circus and carnival-like atmosphere. They're going to be great. You know, this team's going to be different. It's all going to change. It's all. And it never does.

Or it's the, they're losers. They'll never win again. Like it's just the most polar, rising team in it's burning hey in Toronto right now shit's on fire living yeah you heard it was a big

market now you're starting to really get the flavor like Mitch Marner has been traded to every team in the league by now in Toronto like yeah there's all kinds of trade offers out there I guess I didn't even know if he was going to play man

man man missing skate today he's ill interestingly, Marchandes as well. This is a disaster. They've looked their worst in the biggest moments, this franchise with these big four forwards. It's not that they aren't good enough. It's just that when you get laid in series

and things get a little bit harder and you have to be good, they look listless many times. It's baffling. And look, that's a flawed roster. Their D-Core sucks. I think they have one top four defensemen. That's insane.

They're doing patchwork goaltending. Yeah, the D. I mean, like literally, I didn't think they have one top four defensemen. Morgan Riley, who's playing more than he should. He should be a two, three. And then it's like Benoit and Edmondson and these guys like, no, no, no, those are third pair guys. TJ's not looking. TJ's all these scratch for the first two games, three games of this series.

Giordano is over 40. He's hardly played. You know, I think Timothy Lilligrant is probably a five. They don't have more than one top four defensemen. And it's just, it feeds that narrative of like, like you got to break up the big four. And I think in years past, that was overblown.

But they just, if you are one year away from free agency with Mitch Marner, look at your glaring needs on the blue line and in net. And they've just been dry up in the cap for a half decade. If you could turn them into a young defenseman that's cheap and it takes them cap space, I could understand them doing it. And you can survive with the lineup they have if they get it done and they don't.

Do you know what I mean? Like if you're going to have a top four, and they're going to go out and score five a game in the playoffs. Okay. Maybe you can survive not having the D and the goal. Totally. They don't do that either. You're right.

It's one or the other. You can't have, you can't put your all of your eggs and those four guys to say, in that basket and say, oh, well, we're going to outscore teams. They're not going to be able to handle us offensively. Okay.

That's fine. Yeah. Except you're not. Yeah. And unfortunate with Nealander being, you know, I guess the foggy sort of, confusion around it. Is it migrants? Is it not? He called it a personal issue. Lots of people have reported it's migraines. But I mean, you could have used them in the first three games where

you probably should have been up to one coming out of them. Never mind you didn't have your second best player. And he's clearly that right now. Yeah, because it was last week. And I had mentioned, I think we all could leaves have played pretty good. This series has been actually a very good series. Self-inflicted wounds. It's not like Boston's own. And then there was that game, game four. And they were not good in that game. I was going to grab the goals retro just to, as a veteran NHL defenseman like you are, to get your, your comments and thoughts, because it's horrendous at any level. The first goal, well, we've got Ryan Reeves on the wall with the puck, and he's going to lug this thing. He's going end to end. And Joel Edmondson is standing in front of the net.

He's like, oh, shit, this could be some odd map. Let's go. Let's get our points here, Reeves, except Reeves turns it over. And then James Van Reamsdike is alone in front, has enough time to not just shoot it fast. I'm going to stand, take a look, pull backhand and put it between your legs. I forget which, I think it was the past or not goal,

where Jake McCabe decides, I'm going to lay this guy out. I'm going to, you watch this. This is going to be a heavy, heavy hit. And Broads is left. Gap control.

Locko. Yeah. Not great gap, as they say, and it's in the back of the net. Oh, just watching along on social media that night because they're not playing well. And already critics are on the home fans for not being a good enough crowd and not cheered and all that sort of thing. And then they're down, were they down three nothing in this thing? They got two shots in the first 10 minutes and 28 seconds.

The goal he gets pulled. Matthews doesn't play the third. They're playing like shit. Yeah, it was good stuff. It was good stuff for to watch the Leaf. Not for your Leafs fan, I guess. But if you're, you know, sitting in Calgary and don't really care one way or the other, it was good entertainment.

Do you remember the star of the Christmas show? Uh, yeah. Yeah. I have in the Pender Report, but this might be the spot in the time. Sure. Mitch Marner has been taking it in the teeth. And our boy Jay Rose Hill. didn't buck the trend i look at mitch marner and and the breakdown on some of his shifts

and all i can think is who do you think you are are you too good to stop and start are you too good to get back into your fucking position who do you think you are who do you think you are are you too good to try? Do you expect everything in your life just to be given to you because your daddy has told you you're the greatest thing since sliced bread since you were five? Who do you think you are? I watch these shifts. You want $14 million a year to play and this is how you show it. You just expect everything. You just expect everything. Expect everything to happen. Expect everything to happen. You expect everything to be given to you, you chicken shit? Who do you think you are?

You entitled little prick. You don't even have the guts to fucking try because you might try and come up short and fail. That's what that shows me. You insecure, baby. All you do is bitch and float and look around for the easy way to go. I want the easy way. I want it given to me.

I want it just to be given to me on a silver platter. I don't want to have to work. And I don't want it to be hard because that's what I deserve because I am special. That's pathetic. I don't want this guy on my team. I don't want him near my franchise. So I don't know how glazed erosie is or where he is. But he wasn't taking the circuitous route to get to the Mitch Martyr beating.

It was a direct rate on. That was not. stray fire at all. That was, that was, and that's everything. That's what it was. That's the fan base. That was, you went a little temperature check in Toronto? There you are.

No, I can't speak for him. I wonder if today he'd be as venomous, if he'd be as haunt about that. But when that game was a disaster because it wasn't just Marner. It was the D, it was the goaltending. Matthews didn't play. They're getting into it on the bench.

And this was, this, This is great. This is the lip reading on the bench. So you've got, as you can see, there's Austin who is not right. He's playing through illness. He'll still,

he's like, what? You know, complaining what's something that's happened on the east. And then there's Nealander. Stop fucking crying, bro. This ain't junior.

It's not leaping junior. And then he slams his gloves. And the Tuesday's like, whoa. Having a fit and. well stop like crying bro

it's not back for one game yeah it's broken really styles it's broken rent you don't mind teammates getting into it

and that sort of thing but this has gone on for so long and it's it's not been easy when you have that many guys making that much money and all that

you can't just oh we'll just shake it up they have to wait until contracts get to a certain point and with Marner I think they're there next year So Trilliving has some work to do, but it's a broken team. It is.

It doesn't look like a cohesive unit. I always worried because you'd always heard rumors and rumblins about Marner's old man and this and that. And it's like, is it all this kid's fault? It feels like it has been handed to him on a silver platter in a way. But on the other hand, I think he's had someone in his back or is in his earhole, bitching out of his whole life. So is there a true passion for the game?

I don't know. And that's for parents listening, it's a fine line between these kids watching an Instagram or a TikTok video of what's the move behind the net? Michigan. The Michigan and a dangle and this and that. And them wanting to play hockey. Right? Like I think Marner, who's the guy in Anaheim?

Zegras. I think there's a lot of kids out there. Ultra talented, beyond talented, stunningly talented, don't have a effing clue about how to play hockey or win a hockey. Or be a good teammate. I just got a text from an agent. 16 players from, I want to get it right, 16 players. It's weird I'm talking about this, but 16 players.

But 16 players from the 16-year-old AAA St. Louis Junior Blues program have left the blues program to go play the same level hockey somewhere else. Point is kids, parents, all of us, we're always looking for something better, right? And something easier. We're trying to assist them. Maybe we just need to teach them to bear down

and help the team they're with. I don't know. And I think Marner's been that forever. I think he's a talented individual, but he doesn't have a clue about being a teammate. Well, and look, I feel for Mitch Marner because he didn't ask for his dad

to do the things his dad done. He can't control that. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was a very helpful piece on a championship caliber team. It's just not with this one, and it might not be in his home market where he can't go out and have a normal day.

He might be better off. guy in Utah. Like he could be an absolute star. He's at 100 point seasons. Like there's a lot of teams that would love Mitch Marner. This is a tough. This is though the hardest market for him to play in in the world is Toronto. Some of these guys got to be number one too.

And he ain't number one. No. And he's not there, but it's just, we've talked about it with other guys in smaller circumstances. But sometimes there's just a situation that screams change of, like change of scenery. And this is one for me.

Fresh time. The other thing is, too, when you're, when you're at that, high level of skill, it usually brings with it a paycheck. And yeah, expectations. You've got to, right? You know, the, the offensive numbers in the regular season would indicate and

suggest that he's got to be paid a certain, a certain dollar figure. But with the cap, you need that person to be a difference maker. If you're paying them north of 10, you can't have them being a support guy, a la Phil Kessel in Pittsburgh or whatever. Yeah. that's harder to happen when it's a $10, $11 million player. And to be fair, like, he's been a very good $10 to $11 million player in the regular season, but this year was not his best year and the playoffs haven't matched up to the regular seasons.

He's a very good hockey player. It's not. He's a very skilled hockey player. Well, look, I'm just saying, like, we will paint this guy as you're not, you can't win with this guy, but we've painted a lot of guys like that have gone on to win. He needs to go to a new place and a different setup. It's not working there for him. And honestly, the coach has taken a lot of heat here too.

And rightfully so, Sheldon Keefe got an extension before this year. That doesn't even kick in until next year. A little bit odd. Teams often aren't afraid to have the last year lame duck thing on the head coach. But, you know, would I be surprised that Mitch Marner was a contributing part of a championship team? No, but it's not happening there. It's like there's just too many reasons it's not.

It's the family. It's the hometown. It's the cap issues. It's their glaring needs also on the roster. it's the last year of a deal where he's going to ask for huge amounts of money. It's not happening there. And it's him. Yeah, of course.

You're not absolving him from all those. Yeah, it can be all the above. And. Yeah. But I mean, it's exactly what people said about Phil Kessel when he was in Toronto, right? Like, that's what I'm saying is you said you can't win with him. He's not a leader.

Blah, blah, three cups later. But he just, but he wasn't a better spot. Those teams either. Correct. And I'm not saying Mitch is going to be on his next either. But we're saying the same thing.

Like, yeah, we learn to win some. Or else. Yeah. And I guess the point is, where is that team? Where is that fit that can pay him the money that he wants, but be able to put him in a role where he isn't the, you know, right? Do you know what I mean?

What? Sorry, I didn't hear what you said. Utah. Like, there's a bunch. I mean, Vegas, Utah, Carolina, Islanders. Like, there's lots of places where what he does would be massively coveted. And they don't have to build a culture around him. being the leader.

And you need to have cap space. You need to have the want for an offensive star. And you need to have the pieces that theoretically would be traded back to Toronto. It's complicated. He also has a full no move, which makes it really hard for Triliving. If he wants to, he can just say, no, I'm not going anywhere and walk to free agency. He can literally tie the GM's hands, which I don't think would be in his best interest. But it's just underlying how complicated this one's going to be.

Nice story. But you didn't need that player. You didn't need that guy. Well, and the, the, the, we keep forgetting, like, the environment that they signed Tavares in was a cap that was growing pretty regularly every year. Like, no one saw five, six years of flat cap. And that's really screwed the least more than anyone because they sort of factored in cap growth with all these deals on. you know, Matthews and Marner, the Nielander holds out

until the end of November that one contract. Even then, it was 11 million a year. Yeah, it's too much. It's not a hometown discount. No, not at all. The guy that the parent loved, right? Like, you didn't. He's up at the end of next year as well.

It's a really, really interesting spot for your living because you could easily say, you know what? If this isn't Toronto and this isn't the craziest hockey market ever, I'm going to take a year and just move around parts and then operate with math. massive cap space in two years when dry saddle and a bunch of other studs are up. But I don't know that you have the patience for that in Toronto. They're like, yeah, we're just going to reset for a year.

We need to, we'll move Martin for some young cost-controlled defensemen. We'll address our net mining issues and we'll bank some cap space for the next summer. Like, I just don't know that you can do that in Toronto. How much, I mean, are the flames interested in a guy like Barner? Like if Marks has the way to come here, but you would, you'd be the most talented player. They have no question. if you're interested in Zegris you'd have to like learn more than him

yeah it's all those layers money right if you take all of it away would you would you want him yeah yeah sure you would but he's but there's salary cap and he's got a wave and I heard you say Marks or he's got a wave to go to Toronto but it's all world skill he's one of the most skilled players in the world

And again, it goes back to the original point. it looks like he grew up in a very tough environment where it was playing hockey. Hockey was the most important thing in the world.

And there's some videos, and of course they're cropping up on the weekend of dad wearing a mic, standing along the glass, yelling at the kid, talking to him in the car ride home and all that sort of stuff. You didn't pick that. Yeah, it's you almost,

you kind of feel for the guy. Because to your point, Rhett, he looks like a hockey player who doesn't love playing hockey. Not right now. Yeah. when he's talented, like I said, extremely talented. And when it's just when you can wheel around and the, the heats off,

he can do everything. That's the hardest market to play in for most players, not all, but especially given the family, the hometown and the last eight years, that would be the most difficult place in the NHL for Mitch Marner to play. And that doesn't, that's not taking him off the hook, ret. But you would understand if he looked better elsewhere at this point. I think lots of guys can get traded and look better. Absolutely.

but the Bruins have just looked so good in this series. Much like Colorado, not to the Colorado extent against Winnipeg, but the Bruins have looked like a cohesive. That's a team. That's a team that's kind of built right. One team looks like they've been there before, right? We know how to do this. Yeah, they're very comfortable.

And they're very tough. They're focused. And mistakes and, ah, this is too big for us. We can't handle this. Brad Marchand, goal and an assist. Passed Cam Neely for most. playoff goals by a Bruin with 56.

he scored the overtime winner 20 years old 349 days so he's not even 21 had two goals eight shots was everywhere in that game and this guy is a star and not let's see before he even said i get he's a Dallas star. But he is a super star. Oh, he's a super Dallas star. He's a super duper Dallas star. And Dallas has had a very good, very good run at the draft table the last few years, which is why I'm sure why Conroy kind of pointed the finger at them. But his only action is, yeah, he was drafted in 21. So he missed all the O, but did get to play some of you 18s. That's it. That's weird for a draft year. Yeah.

Because I forget who wrote the story. And I kicked myself because just talking about how little hockey he really played. Yeah. And well, he was a good player a year and a half ago. Yes, you've got your Hayskin in, but Robertson, hints, this guy, you know, Harley's having a monster year. It is a very, very well-run team.

In that 2021 draft, Wyatt Johnston, Logan Stankovin taken in the first and then second round, both of them are playing. Big roles right now in the playoffs. No kidding. Maverick Bork has come up. He is playing for them. He was their first rounder. in 2020. That was the year, right, that

Flames moved down. I think he was one of the guys that was in that zone and they ended up getting Zeri. Yeah, Thomas Harley has played 119 games. It's a really smart team that doesn't make a lot of mistakes at the draft. They

tried it down that year, I believe, Dino. Yeah, twice, right? Because that's where the original draft slot that Dallas had, where they took White, Johnson, is where COSA, the Hulking goaltender, went to Detroit. They slid back and they've done well with Detroit. I think that's how they got the Rupe Hintz pick as well. It was like a deadline rental and they turn it into hints. Haskin and Ottinger and Robertson, their first three picks in 2017. Rupé Hintz, a second rounder in 2015.
