Barn Burner: Boomer & Pinder with Rhett Warrener - What Are The Detroit Red Wings DOING?? | BB Clips

Episode Date: September 16, 2026

Boomer, Pinder and Rhett react to another bizarre chapter in what has become a messy offseason for the Detroit Red Wings, with Shawn Horcoff officially being named interim general manager just days be...fore training camp. Detroit moved on from Steve Yzerman in July, brought in an outside search firm and spent the summer conducting what was supposed to be a thorough search for its next hockey operations leader — and yet the season is about to begin without that permanent person in place. Horcoff will have full authority while the search continues and remains a candidate for the permanent job, but with Dylan Larkin’s future unresolved, no captain named and major decisions still hanging over the organization, what exactly is going on in Detroit? The guys debate whether taking their time is the responsible approach or whether the Red Wings simply haven’t been able to land the person they actually want.Video Link: https://youtu.be/v8rynhn1YlM#nhl #nhlshorts #nhlplayoffs #nhlpredictions #nhlhockey #nhlpicks #stanleycup #stanleycupfinal #redwingsCHECK OUT OUR STUFF ⬇️BARN BURNER MERCHhttps://nationgear.ca/collections/shirts/FlamesnationBARN BURNER SHORTS https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj_bcGtvvo-cW2DHEDZ6dEO5ePDmlhZc9&si=jo8iNGxT4ImhS2Y8📲 Follow us:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fnbarnburner/X (Twitter): https://x.com/barnburnerfn?lang=en🎧 Listen on:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/be/podcast/barn-burner-boomer-pinder-with-rhett-warrener/id1648562889Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3Mc6Qd5U22R2zbMlQ7RxIiProducer: Jack Haverstock Hosted on Acast. Starting point is 00:00:00 Penderport more NHL news guys there are no problems to talk about in Detroit remember like who's at the wheel who's the wheel who's the wheel well the search firm what that's going on they got an interim GM while they're searching for the candidate so they hired their GM well no no interim oh and he's also in the running to be the GM but he's going to do the GM stuff until they find the real GM because the firm that's finding the GM isn't done finding the GM but they need GM is the season starts I hope he doesn't screw up the GM stuff if he's trying to be the GM what they've been doing since July. They could have used the
Starting point is 00:00:30 interim GM since then, right? But all the problems are so now they've got an interim GM. So now we can expect some Larkin stuff to. Oh boy. This almost makes it worse. I feel like the working men's having a tough day on this one. If maybe he's the guy. So
Starting point is 00:00:46 remember when Conroy's name was in the hat of and we were kind of like give him the damn job. Yes. I would be in the same. But if I follow Detroit, I know, I was like pork off. It's like, yeah, to of expand on what you say when the GM job was open and they were oh we're going to do some
Starting point is 00:01:02 interviews and stuff if Conroy doesn't get it he's been AGM for nine years he has to leave he has to go somewhere else because if this is not the time for him when's it the time for him and I look Horcoff has been with them forever almost AGM and GM of Grand Rapids since
Starting point is 00:01:18 2002 he was long two 2002 he wasn't playing in 2002 he was playing he was Sean Horcoff Wow AGM in O2 who prior was director of player development for six seasons. And then before that, three years as assistant director of player.
Starting point is 00:01:35 It can't be 2002 because he went to the final. 2022. Oh, thank you. That makes more sense. Yeah, until 15, 16. And I'm like,
Starting point is 00:01:42 he's been, he's been AGM for four years. Six years prior to that with player development and. Yeah. Now, I'll give you the wrinkles. It's got to be close to being. What if you're doing this to like Eric Tolski and Carolina who's underpaid as a
Starting point is 00:01:56 GM that just went a cup? Because that's what Nashville did when they finally got Chris McFarland out of Colorado. He did a great job with the Aves for a help and build that wagon. Sure. Because I get it. Like you grew AGMs to BGMs, but do you think there's a candidate that supersedes any AGM in the league that like this guy's already done a lot? We can bring him in.
Starting point is 00:02:15 So why haven't you brought him? You can't? I mean, the search is not going on. It's September 15th. They should have it done. Yeah. They really like Eric Tulski.
Starting point is 00:02:22 And I don't know where Eric Tulski is or who he's working for. It's on the cup of Carolina. Yeah. my point being is it done or not yeah and i get the feeling that some of these guys that are insiders might have had some indication if somebody was talking to mr tulski totally yeah the one thing we've noticed with these firms it just takes way too long national was swing around the wind it's one of those changes like how do they get paid by the yeah good talk we're just going to do a little more time another week just more time and then on the flip side
Starting point is 00:02:54 for Horikov. It's like, well, if the GM job is open, I've been here for, doesn't that six, three, another four, it's not my time. Then I need, I need to leave. Yeah. I need to go somewhere else to try and find a spot. Yeah. There's something weird about it. It's the firm, man. Well, I know, I, because I think they would have had a Gia by and off at the search room. I really believe that. I'm thinking it's a level up. It's this Chris Illich, the Illich family. Okay. Of course, Mike and has passed away. The Detroit Tigers guy, he pulled out. They can't find a GM, so they hire a firm.
Starting point is 00:03:32 It's been two months since they gassed. Why? It's the Detroit Red Wings. It's original six. You got a brand new building. There's 32 of these jobs. Why is it hard to get? Yeah, you shouldn't be a tough sell.
Starting point is 00:03:44 It should not be a tough sell. I wonder if there's some concern where it's like everyone in that front office was in on the Izer plan. And it just didn't work. and it's like, maybe this isn't the guy we won't with the keys because it'll all like the last guy we didn't end up liking what happened. Chris Illich, our search has attracted significant interest
Starting point is 00:04:01 in the head of hockey ops position from respected leaders across the industry and those candidates, including Sean, remain under consideration for the permanent role. Identifying and hiring the right leader is essential to our friend. How long is to take this should be? Well, you got to get it right.
Starting point is 00:04:16 I mean, I think in Nashville, if we look back in five years, no one will care how long the search firm took if Chris McFrawl is the right guy. They were waiting for me, Farland to be available, not. Correct. And then right now, to your point, anyone whose contract was expiring at the end of the year,
Starting point is 00:04:30 that's when, since you fired, like they're all there. Off the top of my head from when Colorado was out to when he was named in Nashville. Quick. They're waiting. Fairly quick. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:40 But this one doesn't make sense to your guys' point, because it's not like you're waiting for the season end. The season's just start. Or if you are, shame on me. That's both of a whole year. It's, this is not how you wanted it to go. If you're a Wings fan, if you're the owner. Are you sick?
Starting point is 00:04:53 I sound like you're getting stuffed up and... I've been up since 5.50 at kid hockey this morning, but other than that, I'm good.
