Starting point is 00:00:00 We continue our preview of NHL teams, the Canadian editions this week. Yesterday we dabbled through the good-looking future of the Montreal Canadians. And today, a more curious case, the Ottawa senators who prior to Brady-Kachuk's request to get moved to play with his brother in Florida, I think we were feeling pretty good, everything outside of the crease around this team. But there's some big changes, the huge trade in the offseason. They bring in William Eklund for what, the ninth overall pick that the shark used on. Verhoff. There's been a few other moves in here, but it's, it was a team on the rise and we liked their young core. I love their center depth of Stutzler cousins and Pinto down the
Starting point is 00:00:38 middle, but it's going to be year one without Brady Kachuk, where are we out on the Sends in their offseason? Sense of relief for the sense. They're going to go after it, that damn America. We got them out of here. You can see the additions and deletions on the right column. Eklund Berkovsky. Okay. Erison, a little more unsure what you're trying there. Last time we checked, he was doing a shooter-tutor impression in Philly. They really didn't get to rest in for D'Aldarans. They must have some real deep analytics for this. They must, yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:08 Obviously, it's IOU. Yeah, like it's Cichuk out. It's Eklund in. I like Eklund. I do, too. But if Cichuk's not happy to be there. You got a really good young player. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Yeah. And Stutzlaw, I'm a big fan of. I think Couss of Pinnow are excellent middle six centers. I have. a vibe. It's hard. I mean, I don't like Ottawa and I've not been to Ottawa for a long time, but I still got the sense that
Starting point is 00:01:35 maybe with Brady there, there was underlying issues. I think it was the right after his trade. We heard that the podcast he and his brother do, is it wing mending? I don't know. It was not incredibly popular in the Sends room. No one put a name on the quote,
Starting point is 00:01:53 but it was like, yeah, there's a bit of a circus leave in the room here. Maybe it's a little more. more fresh air and less. Oh my God, they're going to ask Brady these questions. Like, it's over. The saga's over. Fresh slate, new chance for leadership group to form. He was a very good player.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Very good player. Didn't do much in the playoffs, but frankly, none of them did. They scored, what, like three goals and got swept? He was supposed to be their heart and solar and he wanted out of there. So that I just, it makes a guy worry. As for what Bet365 tells us, they are even money to make the playoffs. No, that's not saying they're a mediocre team. Remember, they play in what we think is the toughest division in hockey.
Starting point is 00:02:27 You got your Montreals and buffaloes that are coming. You got the two Florida teams that have been great for ages. Toronto, who knows. They had Dober should be as excited about them as you would be the hats. And I think Olmark really is the thing. Like we're talking about a guy that I believe won a Vesna and looked awful for the bulk of last season. Can he get back to something closer to league average, never mind his Vesna form of a few years ago? Noodles talked about it all year long.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Yeah. They could get some gold, get some gold, some saves. Yeah. that they'd be in a good spot last year i was just looking their goals for against they were a plus 32 team who which is quite good it is quite good and that's with average goal tending i don't know you look at it on paper and nothing really wows you like ecklin's good young player star stutzl's their star on the front up front sanderson is yeah like sanderson a lot he's the guy in the back end so yeah i good depth they're good they're young they're everyone's a year better
Starting point is 00:03:25 not a year older, you know what I mean? And they're going to get less love just because they're playing in Ottawa. And I actually mean that. If you had the same roster in Toronto, how much would we be here in a team? Yeah, it's not the same. I agree. Even money to make the playoffs plus 950 to win the division, 18 to 1 to win the conference, 33 to 1 to win the president's trophy. Last year, 99 points, the over under set at 94.5.
Starting point is 00:03:49 So a little regression. I like the over there too. Take the over the jet time. It can be that bad. I'm taking the under. he's out on the set. I don't like the sense. He didn't think they're making the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Well, they were the second wild card. They did sneak in, yeah. Yeah, and they climbed to get there. They worked their ass off. I just, I don't see how they're better than last year, like the roster. The goal to me, that's the only thing. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:12 And he wasn't good last year. And just the maturation of guys like Sanderson and Stuttslund, some of those. I just see Florida being better, Toronto being better. So I'm a little down. The division is really, 365 did. and we talked about it at the time, did have Boston taking a dip. Boston finished one point ahead of them.
Starting point is 00:04:30 So maybe if there's some negative regression for Boston and if Ottawa comes a little bit. Yeah, but Florida is the team we're forgotten about too because they're absolutely in and they weren't last year. They're a dog's breakfast, but in a good way. Like point totals projected for this division as of last week. Montreal was 99,
Starting point is 00:04:47 Tampa Bay won a three and a half. Florida was seven. AI sheets away. We don't need it. We'll see. Those points are going to be very diversified. Yeah, you do play a lot of games in divisions, right?
Starting point is 00:05:01 I see what you're saying. Leafs should be better. I can't imagine someone in that division has 130 points. Yeah, no, no. Right? Even when you think about how much we're down on Detroit, they had a lead in the division. They should have made the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Yeah. Like they were leading that division. If that's the worst team of your division, that's a really good division. Yeah. Like, it's not Chicago last year, you know, Vancouver, Calgary. Rangers, like the worst teams
Starting point is 00:05:27 that division are fine. They're bubbly. Keep moving. And assigning today for one of the key members. Yeah, we'll get to that in a moment. 4.195 million in Cap Space. That's after they do the Batherson extension. They get that went under the wire. I think it's midnight tonight is when your eight-year deals expire
Starting point is 00:05:44 and you have to go to seven years. For five. Is that what he signed for? You know, 2035. He signed eight years max term. Oh, I can't. It's always stopped. 28 years old. They have locked him up through his, what, 35-year-old season and had coming off, what, 29 goals?
Starting point is 00:06:03 He's a good player, but get ready for middle of the roster wingers to make 10.75 because that's what just happened today. Yo, baby. 10.75. Like, that is superstar money just five years ago. Less than that probably. Three years. 10, 10 is going to be the seven or whatever. Totally.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Goodness. I'm all for it. I can't wait to call my boss. Put your skates back on. They bring back Giroux on a one-year deal. He was a free agent. Is he staying? Is he going?
Starting point is 00:06:34 Eventually, he does come back. Birikovsky. Okay. Someone that can play in your top nine. Sure. Little cap's face. We'll see where they use it. If the goaltender is going to be what it is this year,
Starting point is 00:06:45 Jack's going to be right. But, man, was it bad last? Yeah, Allmark is the key. Weird goaltenders. Weird, eh?
