Starting point is 00:00:00 If there was a top priority for the offseason, this was my number one. He needs a new contract at the end of this year, and he's coming off a rookie year where you saw glimpses of like, this could be an elite elite top 10, top five in the prime of his career goalie. Go ahead and lock him up till he's 31 with an eight-year extension before another solid year or at least while you have the chance to get eight years because as of next summer, the longest you can extend a guy is seven. with the CBA changing.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Like, don't miss your chance to lock in your best player in MVP who happened to be a rookie and who has been a stud at every single level he's played, despite everyone questioning him along the way at every level. Do it. I don't care what it costs. See, I want to argue with them.
Starting point is 00:00:56 But I think you agree. I do want to see him signed up. I don't care. He probably doesn't care about the seven or the 80 either. Flames maybe do, but they could try to care, but when the caps, We just said three years is a lifetime. It's a lifetime. Seven.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Eight, please. This is one last year. You'd have nine years. You're terrible at this job. You're fired already. Extending. Mr. Edwards is now. Extending that's a bad idea.
Starting point is 00:01:21 Here's your pink slipped GM, Ryan. You can't go out and just like a dog chasing a bone. You got to show some, be like Connie with the Zeri deal. You sit back, plate. We saw Lucas Dostal get extended on, I think, a seven-year deal with Anaheim, rookie, very good goaltender, strong numbers. Wolf has a stronger case.
Starting point is 00:01:44 So what are you worried about? Well, I'm not worried about anything except to get more expensive. So what? What do you care? What do I care? If I was a GM, I would want him signed sooner. You just got fired. You're not the GM.
Starting point is 00:01:57 You're a terrible GM. You're the GM. What would you do with Dustin Wolf right now? I would slow play it. You did want to argue, didn't he? Yeah. I would. if I have to pay a heart trophy winner, oh, God forbid.
Starting point is 00:02:14 What do you want? Go ahead. Do you rush out to get it done? Heart trophy winner? Well, if he, if Wolf here. Yeah, yeah, you know, I understand. I don't sign him and he goes and wins the heart trophy this year. That's worst case scenario as far as my negotiating against it.
Starting point is 00:02:33 And, right. No, you know, I feel like we don't know the numbers. It's just telling you. You don't know the numbers. There's some goalposts that are pretty easily set up. And it's different, but it's the same. What we're seeing with McDavid, to a certain extent, what you're seeing with Wolf,
Starting point is 00:02:47 with this rapidly increasing cap. It's harder to get deals to. No one, I think guys are loath to lock in. Agreed. Thinking, well, am I going to look like a jackass in four years when I've got four years left on my deal? And now the cap's here. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:03 And everybody else in the league is making three, four, or five million a year more than I am. Do you want me to throw a real wrench at you? Yes. Because I love being into cookie shit. It's shit to swear? Did you say kinky or cookie? Both.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Not here. There's a debate down in the States. America. And the politics. This will be very exciting for people, so I'll keep it short. Perfect. Pharmaceutical companies can sponsor ads right now. There is a debate down there.
Starting point is 00:03:36 that some people are trying to cancel that. If that happens, your dollar is going to be, that sponsorship dollar is going to be wiped out by a third. Yeah, there's a lot of pharmaceutical United States. It's huge, huge, but ESPN cannot survive. Probably like, that's what these people are saying. They're like, well, contact your doctor. Every time you hear that, it's millions of dollars.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Yeah, totally. But yeah, and I'm serious. I'm actually serious. And I mean, it's a pharmaceutical rep on the side. So he needs to make sure his flames money. I'm just saying that if you're an agent and you're good at what you do, you understand that this is possible. You better get the bag secured.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Yeah. And so I think there's like when you look at the Dostal extension and you look at what Olmark and Swayman is more proven guys that, you know, have had Vesna votes already in their career make. That's a window where he's going to get signed in. And so to the point you just made, if I'm Craig Conroy, I'll pay a little more just to get this locked in rather than the unknown of the future, whether that's shrinking revenues or a Vezna trophy and now he's
Starting point is 00:04:42 worth 10 to 12. Heart, I heard. Well, down the road. Yeah. It's, it's almost the flip from the standpoint of the Zeri contract, right? Whereas I would think Craig would be like, oh, let's just keep it short. Learn more about the player. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:57 We'll give you two, three years. Yeah, somewhere in there. Whereas here, we'd like to really nail this thing down. That's my guess. Yeah. And I think to Rett's point, I think the agents would be like, that's great. we'd love to see a few more comps with these higher cap numbers. Because when Olmark and Swamen signed,
Starting point is 00:05:14 you didn't have the three year certainty of the cap growth. But I would be willing to pay a premium. Like let's say, for example, the flames want to get them at 775 or 7.5 or 7.5 or 7.5 or 7. I don't think they can. Well, so just let me play it out. I agree the agent's not signing that now. And maybe they think, okay, well, we could shorten term to get that number.
Starting point is 00:05:35 if the cap's $125 million and he's going to be a top 10 goalie, is that a bet you're willing to make? I think they'd probably be willing to make that bet. What's another $500,000 to a million and a half in this skyrocketing cap universe if you believe he is your best player and he was last year as a rookie? I just think it's only going to cost you more. Like, dang, I really wish we did give him that money
Starting point is 00:06:00 that summer of 2025 when we had the chance. And maybe the agent's not giving them the chance. We never know how negotiations go. but I would be willing to go beyond what they think is a fair and reasonable deal just to lock up the next nine years of the only guy on your roster that looks like he could be a star in the NHL
Starting point is 00:06:16 that's young. Who had, like you said in the, in the Zeri deal, that the flames had the leverage. Who has it here? Is it the player? Yes. Yeah. Yeah, 100%.
Starting point is 00:06:27 Yeah. Because he's up at the end of this year. He's coming off a great year. And if he puts together any sort of progression from his first full NHL year? I want more than Allmark and Swainman now. Right now, he can't really ask for that.
Starting point is 00:06:40 I mean, he's under a team control and all of that, but this is very much, there's a belief system in the player and the agent and the family. We think we're good. And you are good. We'll ride this out and we'll play this out. And then the flip side is, where did he spend all summer? Here. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Who was shooting videos with the stamps and going to represent the flames at charity events? So he'll be terrible this year. Not stamping and all. and pissing around. But I don't. Stay focused. I'm not thinking this is like a area where he's like,
Starting point is 00:07:12 let's go short and get the hell out of here. But I do think the player's got a little leverage because he looks like a young superstar goalie. Yeah. Like when you look at what goalies do, their first year in the league, what he did last year is a pretty impressive outlier. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:26 I can't argue just for the sake. Outta boy. How many guys have come in and had one great year? Lots, Rhett. A whole lot of them. So loads. Many. Many guys have come in and had a cover.
Starting point is 00:07:40 You ever been at the final table? Playing poker. Once. I did too well. With the stampede. Have you? Yeah. Have you?
Starting point is 00:07:50 Cowboys. Tell us more stamp. Can we go full? Can we go one shot? No, no. Yeah. Where's the telestrater?
Starting point is 00:07:57 This is almost as good as like, oh, that on 13. You got slow play this. Just take your time, Craig.
