Starting point is 00:00:00 Who's going to coach the Oilers? It's McTavish available? What are you? Kevin, what's his last name? Low. Shevel day off. Who's going to coach the Oilers? The guy from Denver.
Starting point is 00:00:24 David Carl? I'm going to say Pete Laviolette. Didn't you have Carl coaching the lease? Well, I figured I'll get one or the other. He's going to clearly. It's definitely not going back to D.U. Despite that new extension, son. Sorry, Ryan. Who did you say? Pete LaVuolette.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Laviolet? I don't love their options, to be fair. I was looking at it today. What's wrong with Laviolet? He's done a lot of good winning. How many times he's been through the first round his last seven years in the league? Oh, for. Oh, boy. How many times are the flames? Oh, I don't think they're trying to hire a flames coach. No, I think I just think they really want Cassidy. I don't think Vegas is going to let it happen. So you're shit talking Laviolette because they want Cassidy? I just said they're going to hire them. I just don't know that. he's like how many you can shit talk this is the preemptive shit talk retro is what
Starting point is 00:01:11 no no no no like how many other jobs have you heard him like to because there's been lots openings the last six months i've heard zero and that tells me the leagues maybe not as bullish on him as they were three years ago is he not like top 10 in all time wins and games coached yeah i'm not it's are odd i'm not saying he's a bad coach well you kind are. No, I'm just saying his recent, like he had the really good run with the Rangers when they went to the Easter Conference final and that's basically it for the last
Starting point is 00:01:39 eight, nine years that he's had a good run. Well, how many teams do you coach in eight, nine years? He had seven years in the league. He's been in a way long, what? I think he won the cup with Carolina. In 06. Yeah. Yeah. Which is more than seven years. What do you?
Starting point is 00:01:57 That's what I'm saying. In the last seven years he's coached. He's been through the first round once. Got fired midseason in Nashville. First round exits twice in New York. Third round with them when they... That's a shitty stat to throw out. I mean, you're not wrong.
Starting point is 00:02:15 It's cherry picking of that for sure. What do you make of that? That he's a shitty coach? No, I've repeatedly said he's not a shitty coach. I don't think he's as sexy Canada as he was three years ago. I don't know what you're saying. You've just confused us. I'm good at that.
Starting point is 00:02:29 Bullshit all over the map thing. So what has made him a lesser of a candidate other than I think age and probably recent results? I don't know. I feel like when you look at coaches now and what's a hot candidate, he's 61. Yeah. I thought he's older than that, but okay. I don't know. His name has not come up and I don't think that's.
Starting point is 00:02:58 How many years has he been out? A couple. I think Mike Sullivan replaced him in New York. Well, that was last. 2025. Yeah, so one year. 24, 25. It's probably under payroll anyway.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Yeah. No, it's just like you're not hearing him like to Toronto. You haven't heard him like anywhere until Edmonton this last week. I think that's only because they're not getting the guy they want. In Nashville, he made the playoffs in five of the six seasons. Made the playoffs two of three years in Washington. They gunned him brought trots in. won the cup the next year, I believe.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Went to the conference finals in his first year with the Rangers. Then missed the following year. With the Flyers, lost in the cup final. He's very, his resume is very good. I'm not, I'm not clamoring that Peter Labialette, we should be given a job, but I just find it odd that you're like, I don't know. Like, he's probably made 20 to 30 million. Does he want this?
Starting point is 00:04:01 know. Why doesn't he? Why do other coaches want it? He doesn't. He's made a lot more than most of these guys. How many years is he coach in the league? 20. Oh, at least.
Starting point is 00:04:12 14 playoff appearances. His first job was as a head coach in 0102 with the Islanders. I mean, I don't give a shit if he gets a job either, but. I do think it's a resume.
Starting point is 00:04:32 I do think it's some preemptive shit talk from Vinder. You know what? I kind of appreciate it. Well, you know, the greats make it look easy. If he's going to be the head coach, then... It is a good question about Edmonton. Because I think the way they had planned this was to be sneaky and get permission to talk to Cassidy. That didn't work. They could always run back Knoblock. Now, both might not be an option and they might be fishing in a place that they're better off about Noblox.
Starting point is 00:04:58 So that's a win for them no matter what. The fact that they can't get Cassidy if he's the guy they want, I think that still can play out. but yeah and and the the interesting spot for the oilers for me is that this isn't a spot where you bring in a young up-and-coming dan mus manny mahaltero ryan huska no and it's like you know one year like you're looking for the grizzled veteran get me over the finish line coach and for whatever reason when i look at those candidates i don't love that list as much as i might like what toronto's going to look at with probably a progressive young up-and-coming there seems to be lots options there where it just doesn't feel like a bumper crop of veteran coaches right now like torts was out there i'd think that'd be a good fit, but he's not necessarily out there. Yeah. I still think it. The team's going to be the one that's going to do the winning and losing. I did too. I don't think they are going to go veteran coach though, right? Like you could have a younger coach, but who is a tremendous coach and can relate with the players and has all the systems and X's and O's and all that sort of thing.
Starting point is 00:05:57 And it still may not do it. I agree. I don't think they should go young. I don't think they want to go young. no, I'm saying they could go young, but that doesn't mean it's right or wrong. You could also bring in a veteran guy and not win. Daryl's name's been floated out there, but I don't know that because he's got the great resume, but does he want to do it?
Starting point is 00:06:15 I don't know. Well, noodles is throwing it out there. I don't know. I just mean like when you're, like when I just say like they're looking to hire a veteran coach that has won before, that's a pretty short list of guys.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Does it feel? Maybe they're not doing that, but that's kind of what we're trying to talk about it. When he went to L.A. It was like, that's the guy for that team. Yeah, mid-season. Does it feel that way for Edmonton? Because to me, it doesn't for some reason.
Starting point is 00:06:40 Now, maybe it's just Alberta bias. You know what I mean? But I think if he was, it was four or five years ago, it's the perfect fit. I just don't know that, like, how old's Daryl now? Is he 70? Darryl, you, I, someone could look that up. I just don't know that. 67.
Starting point is 00:06:59 Yeah. Like, is he? is it like the juices are pumping he's trapping at the bit to get back into this or is he content he's got his two rings well the thing about it is though because I agree with you I don't know what it's what's his desire but if he was in
Starting point is 00:07:14 then I don't question his desire correct if he's taking the job I don't think it's well Darrell isn't as invested as he only can do it one way if he's going if he's keen to coach I think it's great higher I don't know where he's at obviously Because that checks all the boxes from their list.
Starting point is 00:07:33 They want a veteran guy, someone who's won, and someone that can help with defensive structure where they thought they really struggled this year. You know, Leon comes out. I don't know, not to interrupt you. Well, I just did. So yes, to interrupt you. I don't think Daryl is a defensive teaching specialist,
Starting point is 00:07:53 if you know what I mean. Daryl is a, here's what's expected. Here's how we play. You do it or you sit. Yeah, I'd agree with that. Do you know what I mean? And it's not that simple. But it is kind of that way.
Starting point is 00:08:06 Do they need to be taught D or do they need to be held accountable? Because I don't know if they've got the crew. Darry might look at it and go, well, I can go in there and make demands all I want. But that guy, that guy and that guy can't play D. Yeah. That's a good question. Because I know when I listen to you talk about Daryl, you always talk about when Daryl had a team that was going, everyone had a role and everyone bought in.
Starting point is 00:08:29 And that seems to be a big issue in Edmonton when you've got. He would use the players better for sure. Yeah. And if you told me they were bringing back Connor Murphy and Jason Dickinson, I'm like, okay, those are good guys that filled roles that will help the oilers where they had a tough time filling those roles prior.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Like, Man's Panic wasn't a fit because he couldn't score and wasn't the top six or. He's not a shutdown bottom six guy. You've got a second pair steady guy so you could split up Walman and a nurse who sucked together. And you got a third line center when Henrique was hurt and you needed a little more trust than your bottom six. But both those guys are UFA.
Starting point is 00:08:59 So it's like those holes you plug to the deadline are both empty. The more I talk about it, the more it does sound like he could do it. Yeah. I think he would if he was. If he wants. If he had the itch and was maybe a touch younger or keener, maybe it's not age. Maybe it's just like,
Starting point is 00:09:15 I want to do this. Like when he came to Calgary again, he does want it. It would be an unreal fit. Maybe he does. Maybe he wants to stick in there. Took us. He did just get,
Starting point is 00:09:25 because I looked at it yesterday. I was laughing. I was like, man, wouldn't it be funny if they asked for, permission from Cassidy and they got the no. And Daryl's extension, does it go through that? Because they wouldn't be able to talk to him. No, it was last year.
Starting point is 00:09:35 It was a two year extension. Allegedly. They never published this stuff. He would have been free to talk to anyone, July 1 this pastime. The Oilers fans are mad. We're talking about the other. It's really sorry, guys.
Starting point is 00:09:45 Oh, they just, whatever. Yeah, I know. Just so, sorry. We're used to talk about them this time of year. They need coachbusters.com. So we got to get, we got to get Cassidy out of his coaching contract. Seriously. See the guy?
Starting point is 00:09:59 Uh, the reputation fits what they're looking for, but he grinds players really hard. It sure does. Like it would not, it might work really short term, but that's kind of their window. It's really short term all of a sudden. They were, yeah, they were done with him in Boston. Those players. Oh, yeah. Well, and Vegas, did they look inspired under him this year?
Starting point is 00:10:21 Yeah. He, everywhere he's gone, he's been very taxed. I don't know if it's Ken Hitchcock vibes for you because it's kind of more you're I don't understand how guys that were players turned into these. Like, you should be able to relate. Yeah, but you played under Darrell and a lot of guys couldn't. And I think you're on the tougher side of like ability to handle a tough coach. And the modern player, I don't think it's anywhere near as tough as your era.
Starting point is 00:10:48 But if you look at some of the successful coaches, we've talked a lot about Marty St. Louis. And maybe he's a unique case. But I mean, John Cooper, you don't get, he's not a tyrant, I don't think. Paul Maurice, I think was firm but fair. I don't, I think if anything, he was kind of deemed as a, as a fair guy, but kept people accountable. The Keenan shits over. Oh, for sure it is.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Yeah, Hartley, see you're going to say like, it's, it's a different athlete now. And you're probably lamenting it's a different athlete. It is a different athlete, but those guys that you just named, what did they do? They won. They won. They had great.
Starting point is 00:11:28 teams, right? So Cooper's allowed to be Cooper. Why? Well, because he's good, but more importantly, because he won. Maurice, well, in Florida, pretty well loved. We win. So that goes a long way, right? Coup had pedigree winning all prior levels, but I do agree. Like when you, when you have Cooch and headman and Vasselovsky, the resume is going to look a lot nicer than if you'd started with an expansion team. asshats that are going to make your kids better in Calgary. So many of them. There's a gazillion of them that's all weird. How they don't all turn out?
Starting point is 00:12:04 Your kids are not great yet. Isn't their whole league full of Calgary and kids? They're developed my kid or not? Why isn't he going to make it? Should be getting drafted. What's going on? I'm being cheeky, but yes, Cooper won and they're good teams. The NHO is very difficult to take Chicago.
Starting point is 00:12:25 Yeah. and win a cup this year. Yeah, Chicago. I don't, you can be the greatest coach in the world. Not how. Who is, yeah,
Starting point is 00:12:34 we're up against it, right? You've got to have the tools to, to be able to do it. So anyway, I don't know what the hell we're talking about, coaches. Yeah, and it's just this,
Starting point is 00:12:46 like, if you're going to go veteran and you have a short-term window and you want someone that's won before, it's a really short list all of a sudden of guys that are available to you if you're the Oilers. Because Toritz, we both said it's likely he's going to re-up in Vegas.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Maybe something happens. But like you're even hearing like Babcock's name out there, not from the Oilers, but from media speculation. I'm like, ooh, I can't imagine. Stop have been rough. Like you really got to forget a lot of stuff to hire him. I think Babs is done. I agree.
Starting point is 00:13:14 But the point that I'm making is that just bring his name up tells you how dicey the list is. You're hunting. You're really grinding to find someone that checks all these boxes. This is really an effed up conversation. because if you're an Edmonton or an Edmonton fan, you should be going, you should be able to put anyone behind this bench and have a chance at winning. Like, sorry, boom, boom, get up there. Put your name in a hat. Let's go. What are we talking about? Don't ride it against 25 minutes. Because that's what I think, what I hear you guys talk about Cooper or whatever. Well, that's what makes this one, should make a coach salivate. Say what you will about Evan Boucher. You got a 90 point D man. You got two of the best forwards in the world down the, Centers and strength out.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Plenty of depth up front. Just figure it out. Stars. Like you don't get to go to places as a new coach that have two to three superstars. Like that's incredibly rare. Wow. To your point. Back to back finals.
Starting point is 00:14:14 Yeah. Based on what? Superstars. Superstars. Not coaching. Not goaltending. Superstars. Star players.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Yeah. Hmm. I do like the possibility. of this blowing up in their face. I really think there's lots there. Oh, really? Yeah. Feels almost like you're rooting for it.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Be good for the show, Dean. Selfless like that. You know what? You blow it! It's your fault. You threw this out into the ether? Yes. Ryan Smith.
Starting point is 00:14:47 They're going to pull a Marty St. Louis. Oh, wow. Smith he's going to come back. He's going to get one of the guys, one of the good guys. He's going to get the boys going. So you get Leon playing with his old stick. He is an endotonian? Holy shite.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Look out. If Marty can do it, is he living there? Do you think? No, he's in Nashville.
