Starting point is 00:00:06 Hey, what's going on? It's Quinn David Furness. Welcome to my show. Quinn David Furness presents the Beantown podcast for Saturday, August 22nd, 2026. What's going on? What's happening? How are you? Got a little pork nugget spice or something in the back of my throat. I had a light breakfast. I had an apple. It's like 11, 1115 in the morning on a Saturday. After my run, I had an apple, oatmeal latte, and three pork links. And I just had the final pork link before going to record here. And you know how, I don't know if it's just, it's not like a pork thing. It's just like processed meat in general. Sometimes you get like the little, it's not from the meat. It's from like a, you know, spice or whatever they put in there.
Starting point is 00:01:04 it's like a tiny little, you know, imagine a needle. Now imagine it's really small and short. Whatever that plant is that it comes from, I don't know if it is a sage or saffron. I think it's in like Italian seasoning or like oregano or something, but I get them stuck in my bracket in my teeth. And this little guy was just hanging out in the back of my throat right when I hit Rickor tickling that uvula.
Starting point is 00:01:34 but I think we're better now. We've got to wash it down. We've got a screwdriver going in here. I feel like I'm in Jackie Brown. That's right. It's 11.11 a.m. in the morning. Make a wish. I'm drinking a screwdriver.
Starting point is 00:01:51 Not a typical thing for me, even on a weekend, to be drinking at 11 in the morning. However, been a tough day, been a long day. Been up for six plus hours already so far. And got... dog drug issues and the system just there's a lot happening right now so we are taking it easy the rest of the day and we got the next you got the next 45 to 50 minutes with bean town my name is Quinn and I'm the creator of the host and the chief pork processor of this program
Starting point is 00:02:31 getting porked with Quinn David Furness we've got a hard cutoff at noon central time here. We've got a, you know, Vikings preseason game that's going to be lit. You know, I'm going to, I'm finna, finna be watching that, at least the first half. You know, because already the starters don't play in these preseason games for the most part. And so it's like, you know, I can stomach the second string. And then when you get to the back half, the second half of these preseason games, it's literally like 90% of the guys out there on the field for your team are not going to be on the team when, you know, in two weeks.
Starting point is 00:03:06 when the actual three weeks and the actual games start. So it's just kind of like, what are we doing at this point? But I watch a little bit, catch a little bit, and it'll be fun. Listener to discretion advice when you're listening to this program. Number one, we'll occasionally some language. Number two, this podcast is objectively terrible. I know we haven't talked about them much in recent years on the show, but I am drinking a screwdriver out of my commemorative Jack.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Links Feed Your Wild Side plastic pint glass. I think it's even more than a pint glass. I think this thing is like a solid 20-some ounces. How many ounces in a pint? Like 16 or something? This cup has been through the ringer, and it is starting to get relatively faded. What I appreciate about it, you know,
Starting point is 00:03:52 it's a red color scheme. So the inside of the cup is, you know, still it's bright red, its original coloring within the outside. We have gone from red to what could only be described as a very burnt orange yellowish in most places it's actually kind of fun because it's you know it's the old jack lynx saskwatch he's he kind of looks like uh you guys remember lurch that's not his name is it lynx lurch something like that earl i don't remember what his name is he's like the the bad guy at the end of lord of the rings of fellowship of the ring he kills boramere spoiler alert
Starting point is 00:04:32 although it's been 25 years literally so and Sean Bean's in it, so you know he's going to, you know he's dying. But it kind of lertz. Is that his name? It's not lurch. It's L-U-R-T-Z, I think. I think he was made up for the film. No, he wasn't in the, he wasn't in the actual books. But he's on it, and it's like a tree theme. And so it actually kind of works well, because now it looks like, you know, before it was just like red and there's like trees, and you just see like the, um, what's, What's the trunk of the tree just like going up towards the top of the cup?
Starting point is 00:05:13 You don't see actually foliage. But now everything is like blazing yellow and orange. And so it looks like there's a big forest fire. And then Sasquatch is just standing there with his. Sasquatch Big Stick, that's a jerky product. It's not his male reproductive organ. The original beef stick, that's what I got. And then the All-American Beef and Cheese.
Starting point is 00:05:35 And then below that, there's the Terriaki Beef Stick, the chicken nuggets, the beef jerky original, and the terriaki beef steak nuggets. Beef jerky has always been one of the outside of like a slim gym stick, although usually if I get that at a gas station on a road trip, it's already the off brand. It's not Slim Jam or Jacklings or anything. But in general, beef jerky's always been one of those gas station snacks, road trip snacks, that I will never gravitate towards for a couple of reasons. One, it's so expensive.
Starting point is 00:06:08 And this isn't like a new post-COVID Trump era expensive kind of thing. It's just like always been expensive. And I'm not, you know, it's just pure beef, pure protein, like I get it. Okay. But the other thing is I get stuff stuck in my teeth way too easily. There are particular teeth I have in certain spaces as an adult after having braces where it's just like, in fact, I consciously and subconsciously try to avoid chewing in my mouth in those particular areas because I know something's going to get stuck there.
Starting point is 00:06:47 And beef jerky, as you might imagine, such a tough chew, you really got a g-n-a-w g-n-w gnaw that it's going to be bad. And that's the thing too. If you get the beef jerky on a road trip, dude, there's nothing worse than having something stuck in your teeth on a road trip. at least if you're eating movie theater popcorn, you're watching a flick. At worst, you're stuck there for like three hours if it's a marathon kind of movie or Lord of the Rings or whatever. Otherwise, it's 90 minutes to two hours for the most part.
Starting point is 00:07:20 You got to deal with that kernel, but you got something to watch, right? So it's like deal with that kernel. I think that's what they do at the end of Clue. Although it wasn't Colonel Mustard, was it? Isn't it the original Clue film? I was just watching a hunt for Red October, which had Tim Curry in it. by the way. I was going to say rip, but he's still kicking, I think, right? He's just a paraplegic. The original clue film, didn't they film like three or four different endings
Starting point is 00:07:47 or three or four different murderers? Let's Google that, see what we find. But to finish my thought, how did we get there? Oh, kernels. Oh, yeah, with movies, it's like, you know you're going to be able to get out get your teeth taken care of if you're on a road trip let's say you're driving anywhere from 48 hours and you get that beef stuck in the back of your teeth you're screwed even if you're a passenger and you can like read a book or try to sleep or listen to something you're still just like stuck in that confined space most of the road trips i take as an adult i'm the driver and so If you get a piece of beef stuck in your back molars and you can't get any floss,
Starting point is 00:08:40 it's advised, I would think, most state departments of transportation would advise against flossing and driving. So you're just kind of stuck there, and the beef is also stuck there. And that is something you want to talk pet peeves. We could have a whole pet peeve show here on the podcast. In fact, we might have already in the past, but that's a big. one for me stuck stuck in my teeth i really hate that it's it's such a big pet peeve i'll even be like at a get-together or something with friends and i'll like eat you know spinach artichoke dip or something you get a little uh artichoke nugget or a beef needle or pork needle what we're talking
Starting point is 00:09:22 on at the top of the show and i will like probably i don't do a good job of this but i'll try to like turn away to get a quick little you know fingernail up in there to try to discreetly dislod it but it is a it really bugs me it really bothers me i don't know email us beantown podcast at yahoo dot com what are those things those little things that really bug you so this is like pet peeves but i'm thinking more of like on your specific body if something is a little bit off this is a good conversation opportunity let's keep this going for a little bit here as a kid email us now Beantown Podcast Yahoo.com or tweet at us at Beantowncast. As a kid, one of my biggest ones was, oh, put a pin in that.
Starting point is 00:10:09 We're not going to forget it. Bodily pet peeves. I wanted to look at the Clue movie endings just before we forget that. This is from, let's see, this is from a chat, GPT, which we're going to be using later for our trivia. I haven't vetted it. We'll see how reliable it is. It's going to be related to Protestant denominations, because I was doing some research
Starting point is 00:10:28 on that yesterday. I don't remember why, but I did. Oh, it was all borne out of, I'm reading Michael Crichton's timeline right now, which is kind of a cross of, cross, pun intended. It's Christian themes and, well, more middle age than just strictly Christian. But it's a combo of quantum physics and the Middle Ages. And I was reading some more about the feudal system. And that got me talking about,
Starting point is 00:11:01 We're researching into Eastern Orthodox and Martin Luther and all that stuff. So we'll get to that in our trivia game here, where we're going to try to determine the denomination. But the 1985 comedy film Clue features three theatrical. There you go. It features three atrical endings labeled A, B, and C, where different suspects are revealed as a murder. Okay, before we look at these endings, any guesses? looked at this at some point, you know, in my life, but I don't know who the actual murderers are. So Mr. Body's dead.
Starting point is 00:11:39 And I don't, because I don't think I've ever actually watched the, like, film clue they made in the, you know, 90s, whenever that was. So I don't know who actually was in, you know, the version most people saw, like, who is the killer revealed to be? I have no idea. So take a wild guess with me, these three endings, who are the different, the three different murderers. I'm putting my money on, I feel like Miss Peacock, because in my mind it's like Miss Scarlett's
Starting point is 00:12:08 kind of the main leading lady, but I think that's a red herring, pun intended. I think it's actually going to mean Miss Peacock is one. I'm going to say Miss White for sure, she's sneaky, the maid, and then we got to throw in a guy. Maybe, I don't know, I feel like everyone's leaning towards Colonel Mustard or Mr. Green, so I'm going to go against the grain and say, Professor Plum. So there's my three guesses. Plum, White, and Peacock.
Starting point is 00:12:36 All right. Ending A, oh, we already botched it. Miss Scarlett is the killer. I literally just said, I think it's a red herring, but it's not. Ending B, okay, we got one, Mrs. Peacock. And then ending C, it says multiple killers. It says practically everyone had a hand in a murder. Mrs. White killed her husband.
Starting point is 00:12:55 Colonel Mustard killed the motorist. Mrs. Peacock killed the cook. Professor Plum killed Mr. Body. So in that one, it says, you know, hey, multiple people, but actually Professor Plum killed Mr. Body. So I'm giving myself a two out of three, okay? And then the unconfirmed cut forth ending, Wadsworth, the Butler. I don't remember him in my board game. What color was that? Wadsworth?
Starting point is 00:13:21 It's got to be like a beige or something. Anyways, there you go. That's our movie trivia of the week. what I wanted to say oh like bodily pet peeves and then I'm not talking about like oh man I got really bad gird today I'm talking about I don't know just like things related you know like a hang nail could really bug you
Starting point is 00:13:43 what are those things for you as a kid a really big one was if my socks as I put on my shoes were not if they were just slightly like a line out of you know out of alignment I guess you got like the seam running across your toes you stick them into your shoes and this is probably you know had to deal with like having shoes that didn't fit right either but you fit you you stick in your socks and it's just like not quite right that really bugged me it bugs me less as an adult
Starting point is 00:14:19 but I feel like I'm also like I have socks that fit me shoes that fit me and it's just like I know I know what I'm doing in terms of putting on my shoes and my socks and getting it just in line. Okay, so that's something that really bugged me as a kid. I remember sitting on stairs my childhood home and just over and over again, almost OCD-ish. By the way, thank you to our friends in Pakistan
Starting point is 00:14:47 and Nigeria for making us the 78th and 178th comedy podcast in your beloved nations. Benin City, Hyderabad, Ho Chimen City, wherever you're listening from, thank you for supporting our show today. Other things. I, and this is very much true for me as an adult, I really get ordinary when my fingernails reach a certain point,
Starting point is 00:15:18 and it doesn't take too long. I think I'm on like in every, I don't know, it's probably like every 10 to 14 days or so. I got to cut my fingernails. I have no, what's the word leniency is not right i have no appetite there's a different word but you know what i'm saying for nails once they reach a certain point and it's not even for any particular reason i think as a younger kid especially in like summer when i be working in the fields you get a bunch of dirt under
Starting point is 00:15:48 there maybe it also has to do with being a pianist and in general you don't want your fingernails getting involved in that at all the um the ebonys and the i'm the ebonys and the Ivory's. Ebony and ivory were together in perfect harmony. Do do, do, do. I don't really know how the rest of that song goes. It's been a while since I listened to it. Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Legends. But yeah, to this day, fingernails, they don't get very long. I have no, I thought I was just about to get the word right. But I didn't. It's like leniency and appetite. I have no blah for fingernails. Long fingernails. I don't know. We'll think of the word by the end of the show. You can text it to us, email it to us. Shout it really loud. If you hear in Irving Park, I'm watching this couple make out of the bus station right now. Unfortunately, it's not like a, you know, they're like these pasty, 40-year-old overweight people. no shade to anyone in those protected classes.
Starting point is 00:17:03 It's just, it's not, it's not hot, really. So it's okay. It didn't have to be. It's 11.20 in the morning, 11.27 a.m. We got 30 minutes left to go here. Let me think, is there anything else on my body that I just really, really bugs me, irks me? Oh, as I, this didn't, this wasn't a thing when I was a kid,
Starting point is 00:17:28 but as I've gotten older, I have tolerance. That's the word I'm looking for. I can't remember it. I really do not tolerate an itchy scalp. So I shampoo. I use my head and shoulders every other day. It's sort of the routine, the rhythm I've gotten into, and that works for me.
Starting point is 00:17:49 But yeah, if I let it go a little bit too long without really scrubbing, I've always had, you know, minor to mild dandruff issues my entire life. The itchy scalp really, uh, really bugs me for sure. So let's pause there. I'll let you know if I think of anything else, but let us know in the comments or wherever. Certain, you know, bodily pet peeves. What's stuff that happens to you that just, uh, not going to fly? It's a no fly zone.
Starting point is 00:18:25 I know what a lot of people is where we're at this Mexican dinner last night. And they, they bring out, this is not a bodily pet peeve, but I'll mention it anyways, because it sparks discussion. and cultural competency. Mexican restaurant, there were some birthdays being celebrated, so at the end they bring out the sombreros. They sing to you, everyone gets a celebratory tequila shot. I did not partake myself because I wanted to wake up and run this morning,
Starting point is 00:18:48 which I did. But on top of that, for each person's birthday it was, so there's three, you know, big table, big group, three Flons, F-L-A-N, Flan. And it's just there's something about the 10, texture, it's just not quite there for me. I'm going to, you know, very short side tangent. The Mexican sweets in general, not my cup of tea. Orchata, I like in theory, but I like the flavor. I don't like the texture. Although I take Orchata over any sort of tapioca or boba. Oh my gosh,
Starting point is 00:19:30 those things are not for me at all. What is that song they sing in church as a kid? The B-I-B-L-E, yes, that's the book for me. Well, Boba tea is not the drink for me, nor is or Chata. Flaan goes into that category, and I'll take this opportunity to, you know, draw my line in the sand for the classic Greek dish. We're jumping from Mexico to Greek.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Baclava? Really fun idea in theory, the crispiness, the flakiness of it. Then you bite into it, and it's just like eating, layers upon layers of honey, which, look, honey has its place and it's fine, but it is just pure sweet. And baklava is just biting pure sweetness. I feel like my teeth are falling out as I'm eating it. You want to want to eat something that was just pure spice, right? You'd want a little bit of diversity going on to mix things up. That's how I feel when I eat baklava. Not that I've had it a million times but i remember one of my like greek roman empire classes in like sixth grade or something
Starting point is 00:20:41 someone you know overachieving kid for extra credit made baklava brought it in and had a slice and just like oh even even when i was you know 13 years old or whatever when usually you're all all over sugar not over as in don't want it but over all over as in i'm on top of it i remember it being much. And that was before I even went into my phase where I would just rip entire boxes of Little Debbie's can or whatever baked goods. Swiss cake rolls, oatmeal cream pies, the nutter butters, zebra cakes for sure, the hostess cupcakes. I know that's not Little Debbie, but similar. Cosmic brownies, dude, a zebra cake, I think that's my, we could probably do a power ranking of little debby's candies not candies why do we keep saying that sweets
Starting point is 00:21:40 on a future episode but man if you get a zebra cake in the right context holy cow that thing really slaps but yeah when i when i first got my like taste of freedom having a driver's license in high school the amount in like a two-year period the amount of little debby snack cakes, that's a good word for it, snack cakes, and off-brand soda, holy cow, probably more sugar consumed in a two-year period, my last two years of high school, than like the other 30 years of my life combined. And that's probably an exaggeration, but it's closer than you might think. You know, you start off your day with a couple long johns from the local grocery store and then have two McDoubles or a McDouble and a McChicken for lunch, you know, 99 cents a piece.
Starting point is 00:22:46 Paying in quarters sometimes. And then for dinner, you know, long shift at the Kmart. You get school in the morning. So you got to fuel up with some. zebra cakes and Mountain Dew off brand. It's like Dr. Mist or something like that combined. Sierra Mist and Mountain Dew. It's the good stuff.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Hey, you got to do what you got to do to get by. Living in the streets, the 815 streets. Let's say hello to some of our dear sponsors here, long-time friends of the show. Home Pride, Oregon, are you tired of selling your house for less than a quarter of what it's worth, all because you couldn't find a reliable home inspector in time. Well, Oregon listeners, I got good news for you. Home Pride inspection services in Bend, Oregon is central Oregon's hottest new home inspection provider with services including things like heating and cooling, roofing, plumbing, and so much more.

If you're tired of big real estate's wranglehold on the home inspection market and you want a safe certified home inspector that you can trust you better call steve not better call saul this isn't one of your vince gilgan amc passion projects this is better call steve 541 410316 or visit homepride oregon uh email in the homepriot organ at gmail.com because uh heads up the web domain is gone there's no more homeprideorgan at dot com it's you go there and it's like sorry this domain doesn't exist you can buy it it's like when uh Was it Trump?
Starting point is 00:24:28 This was back in 2016. It's been a decade. I think it was Trump's campaign or someone else. I don't know. But they bought like jebush.com or something when the domain name expired and they didn't renew it. And it was just one of many Jeb Bush fiascos. What does that guy do? And is he just like, you know, full on retired from public life?
Starting point is 00:24:52 We'll dig into that in a second year once we finish our ad reads. Let me Google it. so we can go to his Wikipedia and figure things out after we finish saying thank you to our friends. Or call 5414100316. Again, HomePriot Organ at gmail.com. Home Pride organ inspection perfection. I also want to give a quick shout out to the Samson Q2U series. It's got crisp, clear audio quality.
Starting point is 00:25:20 Listen to those peas coming through clearly. You know what I saw the other day and they weren't. using Samson's, which I thought was a damn shame. Jonas Brothers apparently have a podcast. But there's no bonus Jonas. There's no Kevin or whatever the fourth one is. I think Kevin's one of the OGs. What is it?
Starting point is 00:25:41 Joe, Kevin and Nick. Frankie, Franklin Jonas. Franklin Delano Jonas. But it's funny because now Frankie Jonas is like this big star and the older three are like kind of washed out just hosting a podcast now. Interesting how the 10. tables have turned. Frankie really came out on top at the end of that one.
Starting point is 00:26:05 So what I recommend to Nick, Joe, and Scotty, whatever the third one's name is, maybe your podcast will take off like mine has in Nigeria, Pakistan, and worldwide. If you use the Samson Q2U series, Samson, when God speaks, he uses a Samson. And I think I might be, getting some business because I saw these Jonas Brothers hair.
Starting point is 00:26:31 It's just kind of curly and all over the place. I think they might need to spend a little bit of time. What does that James Taylor song go? Oh, I got to spend just a little more time with you, girl. Help me now. I think we already mentioned Stevie Wonder on the show. I think that song's got a Stevie Wonder harmonica solo in the bridge. It's good stuff.
Starting point is 00:26:57 Hey, if you don't know that James Taylor song, little more time with you. It's a classic. It's a good one. Underrated. Cuts by Q. Bob and weave, we all know the hairstyle. We all love it.
Starting point is 00:27:09 But how many Chicago-based independent barbers? Speaking of Chicago, where do you guys think that Jonas Brothers are from? Because the Hanson brothers are from Oklahoma. Jonas Brothers, they seem kind of like
Starting point is 00:27:21 West Coast, right? Like, I would guess, California. Where are the? the Jonas brothers from. Wick off New Jersey. Who would have guessed?
Starting point is 00:27:36 That's not where Camp Rock is. How many barbers can actually give it to you the way you deserve? Enter cuts by Q. It's a little like Enner Sam and only different. Cuts by Q has been independently owned and operated since 1995 and is probably one of the better barbershop operations serving Chicago, Cook County, Northwest Indiana. We'll do DuPage as well and Will and Kane.
Starting point is 00:27:57 and maybe McHenry if you pay for it and a Chicago land area from beehives to bangs those are by the way counties surrounding Chicago if you're not from the area beehives to bangs, fohawks the flat tops and everything in between
Starting point is 00:28:13 could do Lake County too I go up there for work sometimes call cuts by Q at 815-29877200 or email cuts by Q at yahoo.com and that's cuts QUTZ by Q at Yahoo.com Oh, and you need a fresh do something snappy or new. Just call the experts at cuts by Q.
Starting point is 00:28:34 And finally, of course, our good friends at the Bean Town Sportsbook, we got NFL preseason action, I think already kicked off for today, actually. I think the lions are hosting a home game, and they're currently playing. I don't know. We'll pull up the box score, and we can check in on that after we finish our ad read while we're checking in on the other thing we were going to Google. Jeb Bush. We're covering a lot of ground today.
Starting point is 00:29:00 I haven't even dug into my notes. We got 20 minutes. Oh, shoot, we got to move fast. Okay. Hey, sports heads. Has it been too long since you made a bad decision? The all-new Bean Town Sportsbook is now live, leveraging the latest AI, advanced analytics,

Bean Town Sportsbook, Bet Like a Better. All right, there's one minute left in the first quarter of the Commander's Lions game. Let's see if anyone interesting is playing. Jaden Daniels. This is a good omen for what the season is going to look like for Washington.
Starting point is 00:30:12 It looks like he played one series, is my guess. He goes 0 for 1, 0.0 yards, one sack, negative 10 yards. So that's pretty good. The commanders, however, do have a touchdown. What is this? A defensive touchdown? Yeah, a zero-yard fumble recovery. There you go.
Starting point is 00:30:32 That's a good way to score. And we turn to the Detroit Lions. Let's see if any of their interesting players are playing. No, Vikings legend Joshua Dobbs. Whoa, get this. This is the perfect Joshua Dobbs stat line. If you don't know, this guy is like a rushing quarterback without much arm talent, but has carved out a solid, like, backup NFL career.
Starting point is 00:30:59 Not known for his passing skills, but is shifty. Three for six passing for 24 yards, an interception and a sack. Two rushes for 53 yards and a touchdown. So if you're curious, if you're thinking maybe this is the year the commander's defense finally puts it together, I wouldn't bet on it. But it doesn't look like there's, oh, and Josh Dobbs has a fumble lost. That must have been that zero-yard touchdown, the commander scored. All right.
Starting point is 00:31:32 Let's check in on Jeb Bush. I don't want to, you know, linger on this point for super long. I am just curious. I always, you know, thinking about these politicians of your, and everyone's kind of got their moment. Some moments last longer than others. But, you know, like the other day, I was reading up on Paul Ryan, and there's not a ton on him in the last like five years, whatever.
Starting point is 00:31:57 But I get interested about these guys who it's like, it's a really, you know, they are very much in the spotlight nationally for a period of time. And then they just kind of disappear and you never hear about them again. Case in point was watching, you know, we get the SNL channel on our Roku in bed or in our bedroom. And there's a SNL sketch with Kate McKinnon as Jeff Sessions. And it's like, oh yeah, that guy was like, that was a big deal. he was all over the spotlight for like a year or two and now it's like when's the last time you heard anything about Jeff Sessions
Starting point is 00:32:29 so same thing with Jeb Bush had an ill-fated presidential run in 2016 by the way do you have any idea any guesses what Jeb Bush's first name actually is because I had no idea I just assumed like he's from Texas like yeah Jeb seems like a pretty regular name to have it's actually John. John Ellis Bush 43rd governor of Florida from 99 to 07
Starting point is 00:32:55 It's crazy how he stopped being a governor in 07 And then his like Biggest push for president was 10 years, 9 years later I guess it was like eight years when he was campaigning But didn't work out Let's see post Post 2016 campaign Let's see
Starting point is 00:33:15 I like how his His like slogan was his jeb with an exclamation point looks like the Wikipedia article is kind of a bottoming out after 2016. Let's see. I mean, presumably, he's just like, you know, on a board of some big oil company based out of Texas or Florida or something, and he's just, like, living on a ranch and doesn't actually have to work. And he just plays with his grandkids and does whatever he wants. And good for you, Jeb Bush.
Starting point is 00:33:52 but my autocrat keeps changing Jeb to Jen Bush. And so I keep getting all these George Bush's daughters things, Jenna Bush. Isn't she on the Today Show? It literally, I swear to God, I've been in a pretty irritable mood for a number of reasons today so far. Bean Town is my oasis. And my Jeb Bush has been autocorrected to Jen Bush about five.
Starting point is 00:34:24 five times now behind the scenes while I've been typing with one hand while recording and it's really starting to bother me here we go to i think i called this jeb bush works as a this is a i i bush works as a private equity and business executive heading merchant banks in florida while running a national k-12 education reform foundation he largely stays out of politics there he goes yeah he's chairman of a financial investment firm i don't know how these guys all get the financial investment firm chairman roles. It's like how much statistics in Calc 2 did you actually have to take in college to know what you're doing for this stuff?
Starting point is 00:35:08 I legitimately don't know. It's like could I become smart with investments? I don't know. The whole world of investments and being an investment banker is befuddling to me. It's return to our notes here. our animal of the week is the weevil. No, not weasel. This isn't a ricky tiki-ticky-tabby fan faction.
Starting point is 00:35:39 Fan-Fection. What is affection? Affection. This is the weevil, as in bowl weevil. Eating your crops. Runing your cotton. I was on the Weevil Wikipedia article yesterday. And I was like, what the heck is a bowl?
Starting point is 00:36:00 B-O-L, it's some like part of the plant. I don't know. I can't explain it. But just know that a bull is a part of the plant and the bull weevils, presumably love that part of the plant. And without the bowl, you can't produce cotton. It was on a, it was a brief. This wasn't like an hour long.
Starting point is 00:36:22 This was like a 20 minute. Excuse me. Those pork needles are coming back. 20 minute YouTube wormhole. but it was wholesome because I was like watching educational material about how certain things are made yesterday and I was on how peanuts are made not Charles Schultz but like George Washington Carver
Starting point is 00:36:42 and so I watched a video on how the peanuts are made and then I watched a video on how sugar is made and somehow that got me into thinking about weevils from an animal of the week but we'll roll this all into one while we're on the agricultural topic and then we'll finish up with our trivia question. But weevils are types of beetles. They're tiny little guys known for their long noses.
Starting point is 00:37:13 And I think what was interesting about how peanuts are made, I didn't realize peanut butter is literally just peanuts. And, I mean, if you get the unhealthy stuff, It's like some added sunflower oil or something as too. But in my mind, it's like if you're going to make something into a butter, you got to add something naughty to it. But what I learned watching how peanut butter gets made, it's just if you're like, first you got to roast it
Starting point is 00:37:50 and then you got to do some other stuff too. You got to kind of shake it out and cool it. But basically if you mill it enough, chop it up, it turns into a paste. And somehow that paste becomes creamy. So, I mean, if you take, do all nuts turn into that consistency of peanut butter? Like, can you have cashew butter? Macademia butter?
Starting point is 00:38:23 Could you have a Brazil nut butter? These are questions I have. If there's any nut experts or George Washington Carver the 5th is listening, email us, Beantown Podcast at yahoo.com. But in general, not a particularly complicated or arduous process, I would say. It's basically you treat the nuts a little bit, then you just grind them up. Sometimes the unhealthy stuff, you add a particular oil, your trans fat is what they said in the video, to make the butter a little bit more creamy and sticky.
Starting point is 00:39:04 Because if you just buy the organic peanut butter, there's no added oils. And then you can have the peanut oil kind of separate on top of the rest of the butter. But that doesn't bother me. You can stir it up or you can drain it, whatever you like. It was interesting. I love learning how things get made. The sugar was a much more complicated process. For context, the peanut butter video was like four minutes.
Starting point is 00:39:28 The sugar one was like eight minutes. It's crazy. You got to take the canes out, the sugar canes. and you got to like juice them. I was paying less attention by this point. I was really locked into the peanut butter video, less so when I saw the sugar cane one was eight minutes. I was like, huh.
Starting point is 00:39:48 But eventually, you know, you do some stuff, you heat it, you cool it, you squeeze it, turns into molasses. Then you got brown sugar and white sugar, and next thing you know, you got regular sugar. I think, you know, what befuddled me the most, What confounded me the most was like, you know, you're watching these videos and you got all these high-tech machines and conveyor belts and stuff, making the, you know, making the sugar out of the canes. And I'm thinking, you know, back in, hey, back in the 18th century, how were we getting sugar for our tea? And it was a lot of slave manual labor.
Starting point is 00:40:30 So not great. That's why I try to avoid, you know, added and processed sugars in general. to kind of give a tip of the cap to the... My ancestors. Not my ancestors, per se. You don't hear a lot about Norwegian slaves. But maybe they exist. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:40:52 You figure the Vikings could kind of do whatever the heck they wanted. If you looked at them the wrong way or you stole their tankard of mead, you might get enslaved. Watch out. They'll definitely rape and pillage your village, that's for sure. It's interesting that village and pillage rhyme because I feel like there's only a couple things in general in life that you can pillage in a village is like number one on the list. So I don't know if anyone was thinking more deeply about that when they named those two words. But something to think about.
Starting point is 00:41:31 All right. Our trivia question of the week, I was reading up on different denominations of, well, it started with a broader. kind of look into religion dating back to the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox schism, the great schism, some call it. And then eventually a couple hundred years later, Martin Luther shows up and you have the Catholic Protestant schism. And, of course, now you have a million different Protestant branches, denominations we call them.
Starting point is 00:42:10 And I grew up in a largely, well, I grew up going to a non-denominational church. My mother grew up Catholic. My father grew up, I don't know, Presbyterian maybe. Not sure. But as a child between attending churches and working at different churches, I've experienced a number of different denominations. I worked for a Lutheran church, my senior year of high school. I subbed talking about piano playing at a Unitarian church,
Starting point is 00:42:40 which is interesting to read about. But these are things that I feel that from time to time I should brush up on. I was a religious studies minor in college after all, which literally means you take like six classes. I think it was actually six classes. I don't remember. I took one class that was like African-American religion in the 18th to 20th centuries. And I took one class that was more of like a core foundational skills,
Starting point is 00:43:08 religious analysis kind of course. That was a good class. I had to take a Buddhism class. That's three. I don't remember the other ones I had to take. I don't know. I enjoyed it. It was good stuff.
Starting point is 00:43:26 I don't know. I don't know. I have to go back and think about that. Or maybe I can find my college transcript somewhere. It's a problem for tomorrow. We're going to go. So what I've done, I've asked Chat Chipu to write. I think there's eight different denominations. We'll read a brief description.
Starting point is 00:43:42 As we're going, we'll try to guess which denomination it is. Now, the thing is, chat GPT hasn't actually given me the answers yet. So let's see if we can go back and try to ask it for the answers because I just have like, you know, denomination A, this, nomination B, this. Okay, here we go. I got the answers on chat GPT. loading in the background. So now we'll just go one at a time. Again, I think this is not a traditional
Starting point is 00:44:14 tribute question. There's eight different denominations. We're just going to go one at a time and we'll guess. And we've got five minutes on the clock here. So denomination A, known for emphasizing personal conversion, believers baptism and the authority of the Bible. Calgregations often practice baptism by immersion and plays a strong emphasis on evangelism. That sounds very like not specific. personal conversion, baptism, authority of the Bible. Those all seem like pretty classic staples. I have no idea. If I had to guess, I would say, I don't know, who knows, Presbyterianism.
Starting point is 00:44:57 Let's see. Oh, it's Lutheran. What did I just say? I worked at a Lutheran church. That's embarrassing. Okay, that didn't ring true for me personally. You didn't say, like, these guys love Martin Luther. That would have been a clue for me.
Starting point is 00:45:08 but let's go on to number two. Famous for its emphasis on predestination, God's sovereignty and a tradition rooted in the theology of John Calvin. Its churches historically developed a strong tradition of preaching and education. Well, I was going to say Calvinism, but that's not really a branch, is it? It's more of like they loved Calvinism. Was that Anglicanism, I think? Anglicanism, Wesleyanism.
Starting point is 00:45:37 Who did the Wesleyanism? and brothers. What did they found? I don't know. Let's go Anglicanism. Two. Oh, that is Presbyterian. Okay.
Starting point is 00:45:48 My, I should have taken seven classes, not six. Doing poorly. Number three, originated in 16th century Germany through the teachings of Martin Luther. So how is this not going to be Lutheranism? It emphasizes salvation by faith and the authority of Scripture while retaining a relatively formal worship tradition.
Starting point is 00:46:06 So it's already been Lutheran and Presbyterianism. So what is this third one? Loves Martin Luther. Is that Anglicanism? Let's see. Nope, that's Methodist. Okay, we're really doing well here. Number four, began as an 18th century revival movement associated with John and Charles Wesley.
Starting point is 00:46:25 Oh my gosh, chat cheap, but he's listening to me. It emphasizes personal holiness, practical Christianity. It's God's grace working throughout a person's life. You know, it would be really easy. This is an audio format, really easy for me to sit here and say, or look at the answers behind the scenes to say, oh yeah, I'm getting this, I'm getting that. You're getting the real raw Bean Town uncut to show how poorly I'm actually doing.
Starting point is 00:46:50 So what was the Wesleyanism? They might be Methodist. I'm going to guess Methodist for number four. Nope. Oh, it was just Methodist for number three. Boy, really crashing out here on the show. Number four is Baptist. Rough.
Starting point is 00:47:08 Number five. for a simple worship style, a strong emphasis on peace and nonviolence, and the belief that people can experience the presence of God directly without elaborate rituals or clergy, clergy, let's say Unitarian for five. Nope, that's Anglican slash Episcopalian, our all-time number one horse name. Number six, originated in England during the Reformation and developed a distinctive middle ground between Catholic and Protestant traditions. His worship is historically centered around a prayer book and bishops.
Starting point is 00:47:39 Oh, I was just learning about the bishops. Who does that Eastern Orthodox? What is six? Pentecostal. Okay, I thought Pentecostal was more focused on like end of the world type stuff. No mention of that. Thanks, Chad, GBT. Second to last one.
Starting point is 00:47:52 Emerged from the Radical Reformation and is particularly known for believers' baptism, often by immersion. Many branches have historically emphasized separation from government and a simple lifestyle. I don't know. Sounds like the Amish. That's a good branch. Nope, it's reformed. I didn't know. I never heard it.
Starting point is 00:48:09 that one. Good job, chat GPT. I'm going to take some issue with these clues, but let's finish up here. Number eight, a Pentecostal tradition known for emphasizing baptism in the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, divine healing and vibrant worship, it became one of the largest Pentecostal movements in the world. So we already had Pentecostal. This is a subset of Pentecostal. Apparently that's Anabaptist, according to Chat GBT. I'm apologizing. We're calling that a trivia, trivia, bust is what I'd call that. You'll be happy to know, though, me and some friends and my wife, sister-in-law and others, we played office trivia on Wednesday night,
Starting point is 00:48:50 or Tuesday night, took first prize. So, not completely stupid. That's enough. Thank you for listening to my show. Quinn David Furnace presents the Beantown podcast for today. We'll be back at you with you next week. Stay safe. Stay sane.
Starting point is 00:49:09 Check in on you next time. Bye-bye.
