Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, what's going on? It's Quinn David Furness. Welcome to my show. Quinn David Furness presents the Bean Town podcast for Tuesday, July 16th, 2024. What's happening? What's going on? How are you? My name is Quinn. This is my program. Quinn David Furness presents the Bean Town podcast. I am the creator, host, chief art design, or designer of this program. Created a great e-card on my favorite e-card platform 123greetings.com. 123greetings.com. For my father Steve, happy birthday Steve today, 63 years young. You might know him from Home Pride Oregon. HomePrideOregon.com or HomePrideOregon.com, Home Pride Oregon inspection perfection. But I made a banger e-card. I think it was a cat lounging on the beach. Not like a creepy cat, like a relaxed cat, I think more Garfield vibes than Halloween
Starting point is 00:01:07 spooks. I believe he had an ice cream cone, potentially what appeared to be a daiquiri. D-A-Q-U-I-R-I. I think that's how you spell daiquiri. I don't know. I don't know if I've ever had a daiquiri. It could have been a pina colada, maybe a screwdriver. It looked pretty orangey. But he was having a good time. He was chilling at the beach. And traditionally cats don't like water. So that's kind of the fun juxtaposition of this card. You're thinking, oh, it's a cat. There's no way he's going to be at the beach. Right. And then it zooms out. Of course we got some fun synth pop, happy birthday music happening in the background and he's at the beach and it's kind of like an M Night Shyamalan twist. I'm sort of the M Night
Starting point is 00:01:50 Shyamalan of E-cards is one of the ways you might know me. Another way you might know me is if you are listening in Pakistan because we are the 112th ranked podcast in the great Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Hello Hyderabad, hello Karachi, hello Khyber Pass. Khyber Pass sounds like it could be a trick play in the Vikings playbook this upcoming season. Watch out! Hello to Pakistan. We got a lot to get into today. We're not gonna waffle. W-f-f-l-e one of my favorite verbs it's also a breakfast food we got the politics obviously so much happened this last week it's it's only been like five days since we last recorded but I feel like a lot has happened first there's
Starting point is 00:02:39 the deaths to get through right Shelly Duvall passed away. Richard Simmons passed away. Dr. Ruth passed away. Shannon Doherty passed away. And I'll be honest, I don't know Shannon Doherty very well. But some of my coworkers took it pretty hard. Then we had the near death of former President Donald Trump this week on the campaign trail. Wow.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Finally, some spotlight off of Biden. And what was it, Friday afternoon rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. This isn't Beantown breaking news. We are not the first to report this, although maybe it's the first Pakistan's getting a bit. I don't really know. Apparently CNN was deciding if there was a link between an Iranian plot to overthrow the president and this guy.
Starting point is 00:03:29 I don't know. I don't really feel like this guy, whatever his name is, Thomas Crooks, which sounds like the name of a shooter that Stephen King would come up with in one of his novellas, right? Thomas Crooks. I don't think that there is much of a linkage between Iran and Thomas Crooks.
Starting point is 00:03:51 I'll say this in this week on the campaign trail. My first instinct when I heard the news, and I don't know if this is like a terribly hot conspiracy theory, I also don't think it's accurate. It's just my first instinct was that it was an inside job, meaning this was part of Trump's plan to kind of get back in the game and boost his poll numbers. Now, I'm not coming out on the record and saying that. I think it's pretty bogus and we're trying to tread lightly here so we don't get canceled by either side. But I'll be
Starting point is 00:04:23 honest with you, that was my first instinct. Who knows? I'll mention, you know, listener discretion is advised. Number one, will cage me some language. Number two, this podcast is definitely terrible. Number three, sometimes we've got conspiracy theories. I don't know. Excuse me, it just feels like this guy is like prototypical school shooter type guy.
Starting point is 00:04:42 He's a big Trump fan. I don't know. It's like big Trump fan. I Don't know it's like Maybe they would pay this kid off now. I think if you're gonna do this right you wouldn't pay off like a 20 year old You'd get like a former Marine who actually knows what he's doing because this is a Millimeters away from life and death, but maybe that's their perfect cover I don't know not much of a conspiracy theorist but I would like to see what Alex Jones had to say on this I don't I feel like Alex Jones has been lost to the dustbin of history occasionally I'll watch some old Vic Berger Alex Jones Alex Jones
Starting point is 00:05:21 cuts no that's good stuff but ever since he got taken off of whatever it was called, Newsmax, I don't know. Not Newsmax, but he had his own thing, right? I can't remember what it was called. Email us, Bean Town podcast, yahoo.com. Again, that's Bean Town podcast at yahoo.com. What was Alex Jones? What was this thing called?
Starting point is 00:05:43 Infowars, right? I think that's what it was. Same with Milo Yiannopoulos. Don't ask me to spell it. M-I-L-O. Last name starts with a Y. Yiannopoulos. It might just be Y-O-U-N-N-O-P-A-P-O-L-I-S. Something like that. Who some of you probably know some of you don't know he's the craziest clash of identities. He's like a very flamboyant gay man with fake blonde hair who is not just not just like a Republican. He's like alt right whatever the QAnon version of the right is but not like a project 2025 guy because he seems like a guy that really likes to,
Starting point is 00:06:26 you know, sleep around and stuff. I can't even begin to figure out what Milo Yiannopoulos is about, or like what is he even up to? That would be good. We should check in. What the heck is Milo? And we definitely did not get his name right.
Starting point is 00:06:42 We weren't that far. It's Y-I-A-N-N-O-P-O-U-L-O-S. What the heck is this guy doing? What is he up to? He was a big deal like 10 years ago when I was in college. This is pre-Trump. He, but like it was like the formations of MAGA basically. But he came to my school, where I went to, when I went to college, and spoke. And it was one of the OG, obviously it's not OG but just in my own brain, like big campus protest. They stormed the assembly hall or whatever and he couldn't even speak
Starting point is 00:07:26 because they grabbed the mic and he ended up like leading his posse out into the quad and there's a big march and all that stuff. You can probably find it on YouTube. My church friend Edward Ward, Ward, that's his name, Edward Ward, was like the ringleader of the opposition and you can see the YouTube video, he's doing all sorts of chants and stuff. I still, I think I'm still friends with Edward Ward on Facebook. He ran for alderman. He was trying to be Edward Ward from the ward, if that makes sense. I don't know which ward, 43rd maybe. But it's a lot of awards. That would have been good for our Double Talk episode last week. Yeah, you can see the whole thing. But
Starting point is 00:08:09 we'll check in on Milo in a second after I mentioned we're drinking off-color brewing Apex Predator, probably their most famous one. It's a farmhouse ale. And this beer that I'm working on right now, it's a tall boy. It's kind of a cursed tall boy. This is third time's the charm. First time I tried to drink this, brought it to our last regular season kickball game, which was last Thursday, a 9.50 p.m., 9.50 p.m. game, which is just absolutely brutal. Get there, the other team forfeits, and it's like, well, I'm not going to drink this drink this now I'm gonna have to pee on the train right home so 0 for 1 then the next night so last Friday night had a race 5k on the Montrose track with my friends Abby and Matt and last year this this it's tracksmith they run it's a big running company out in Boston. They run this 5K series across the US called the Twilight 5000.
Starting point is 00:09:08 And I ran it for the first time two years ago with my friend Abby. And when we ran it, they had, you know, post-race beer, pizza, all that stuff, which made the entrance fee, which is like 50 bucks, 60 bucks, maybe a little bit more reasonable, because you don't get like a texture, you don't get a metal from any of this. So it's like, okay, at least we're getting supper out of it. So we run it again this year and I'm noticing as I'm like just gathering details leading up to the race, I'm noticing, hey, there's no mention of beer or pizza here. And same registration and same lack of texture and same registration fee and no tech shirt, no metal, anything
Starting point is 00:09:45 like that. So it's like, what is your money going towards? Well, yeah, we get there or to try to preempt this, I was like, let me bring this Apex Predator. So at least they have something to drink in the event that they don't have beer. Of course, we get there, we run, there's no pizza. They have Athletic Brewing Company beer, which is non-alcoholic, which it doesn't taste bad. It's just, I would rather be drinking, if I'm going to splurge on the calories, I would rather have something with a little bit of punch to it, right? But of course, I was so besheveled as I was going out the door to prepare for this race to try to catch the bus that I forgot my apex predator. Same can, one day later in the fridge. Oh for two.
Starting point is 00:10:33 So now third time is a charm, five days later and it's delicious. I love off-color brewing. Good taproom down in it's like the North and Clyburn kind of area along the river, industrial, but that's that's good water man. Speaking of Chicago River, there was an event planned for I believe it was September or October. It's gonna be the first swim, the first organized swim in the Chicago River in like a 100 years. And I remember seeing this pop up maybe two months ago and I was like, oh, maybe I'll register.
Starting point is 00:11:09 And then it was pretty expensive. And I'm not really in swimming shape. So I was just like, you know what, let's let them do this once and then they'll bring it back next year. I might try it just for funsies. Well, the Chicago, you know, Department of Ecological Functions or whatever came out yesterday and said, nope, you're not doing it. That water is not safe, which is a bummer because they've been doing all sorts of restoration efforts.
Starting point is 00:11:33 I love the river. I saw the river earlier today. I run over it. It's awesome. But the swim event that was scheduled for this fall has been shut down due to health concerns. So we'll try again next year maybe. Project 2025. What if project 2025 was just about cleaning up the Chicago River and not about banning pornography? That's a project I can get behind.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Okay, Milo Yiannopoulos, born 1984, so this guy's about to turn 40, is a British far-right political commentator. His speeches and writings criticize Islam, feminism, social justice, and political correctness. The word I said is correctness. Yiannopoulos is a former editor of Breitbart News, which was Steve Bannon's thing, an American far- right news and opinion website. Actually, Breitbart was not founded by Steve Bannon. It was Bannon. Andrew Breitbart was named after an actual guy, Andrew Breitbart. But Steve Bannon was a big part of this, right? I don't know. I don't really see him anywhere.
Starting point is 00:12:40 Oh, yeah, there is the former executive chairman. OK, so I didn't want to read my whole life story. I wanted to see what was happening. Oh, here you go. We jumped to the last page of his Wikipedia intro. This is revelatory to me. In 2022, Yiannopoulos served as an intern for US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, then worked with white nationalist Nick Fuentes and rapper Kanye West on the latter's short-lived 2024 US presidential campaign. I don't even know anything about Nick Fuentes. Looks like he's a big Holocaust denier. In April 2024, so this is recent now, Yiannopoulos was listed as chief of staff at Yeezy Apparel but stepped down on May 15th due to West's announcement of an adult
Starting point is 00:13:22 entertainment division at the company. So maybe Yiannopoulos is a big Project 2025 guy. I didn't know he was tied up with Kanye. So... Oh man, this is just... Where do you even begin with this stuff? He's been accused of propositioning teenage boys for sex, soliciting sexually explicit photographs and videos from them. Why is it always the sexually repressed guys who are trying to ban the pornography? Let's just be open and free about it, you know? Like me, when I go to Jamaica next week, there's a nude beach as part of the resort, I think. I was watching a TripAdvisor review this morning, or a YouTube video, or whatever,
Starting point is 00:14:04 for this resort we're going to next week. And I remember that had been mentioned before, the nude beach. But I've never been to one. And look, I know it's not like, oh, yeah, nude beach. Look at the honeys. Whoa, whoa, whoa. I'm an engaged man, by the way.
Starting point is 00:14:17 But it's just one of those kind of fun things. I don't think I would get nude, but maybe I would. Probably not if my in-laws and sisters in law were hanging out it would probably be more of a solo endeavor right it's a family trip it's a family show but it could be fun I don't know just for a little maybe do a little flash like a little whoo that's the sound my shorts make when they flash. Also big announcement, you heard it here first. Excuse me.
Starting point is 00:14:51 In effort to preserve my health and try to live to at least 200, like one of those sperm whales, I'm wearing a swim shirt for the first time. You get you get closer to 30 and life changes, you know, I want to be there for my kids, my grandkids, my great grandkids, their asexual, multigender partners in this woke, woke, woke environment. That we got to get project 2025 here. So we don't have to deal with that. I'm kidding! I love people across however you want to identify. A lot of close calls at the cancellations today. Okay, we already mentioned our good friends at Home Pride Oregon, happy birthday again
Starting point is 00:15:35 to my dad Steve. And of course our good friends at the Assamson Q2U series. When God speaks, he uses Assam a Samson when I don't know what else happens in the Bible gospel gospel music could use a Samson Q2U series oh man you want go check out you want some good old-fashioned gospel music go check out Mother Burke and the Mississippi Mass Choir I think she's still alive she's got to be like in her 90s butoir. I think she's still alive. She's got to be like in her nineties, but there's I think two of my favorites are This Morning When
Starting point is 00:16:08 I Woke and I'm Not Tired Yet. Those two recordings on YouTube really bring the house down. Good stuff. Probably broadcasted by the Samson Q2U series. So good stuff, good call, Samson. And then of course our good friends at Cuts by Q did a little shave by Q before we started recording today. Gotta make sure I get the back of the neck before we go down to Jamaica. Don't want them to call me a caveman or something like that. I don't know, I was reading a little bit about Jamaica today.
Starting point is 00:16:43 It's such a blind spot in my knowledge because everything I know about Jamaica is just like Bob Marley related things and weed and Rastafarianism and the British cannolis, cannoli, cannoli, colonialism is what we're trying to say here. But there's a thinking about like the indigenous people, right? There is a there is a name of the indigenous people and I forgot it. But when they started to mix and mingle with the colonists and the slaves, that's when you got the maroons, M-A-R-O-O-N-S. It's a people. It's not Adam Levine's, A-R-O-O-N-S. It's a people. It's not Adam Levine's family.
Starting point is 00:17:28 It's separate. It's the Maroons. I was reading a little bit about them. I think Jamaica used the US dollar, right? So there's a lot of mixing and mingling and subterfuge, frankly, going on within the island of Jamaica. It's like 2.7 million people. Kingston is the capital. It's its largest city. We're flying into Montego Bay and then
Starting point is 00:17:51 it's like an hour drive from there. So looking forward to it. Well, classic resort trip. Prior resort trips for us included a 48-hour stay in Cancun for Matthew Feather's wedding. And we were in Cancun, I don't know, was it last year, year before? I can't even remember. I had an all-inclusive, and then we've been to Dominican Republic as well. So I'm slowly checking off my Caribbean checklist. After this, we'll have Cancun twice, Punta Cana. Excuse me, Jamaica. I think next up would be
Starting point is 00:18:28 Bahamas is a classic. Oh We've done San Juan now, Puerto Rico. Got a recommendation from Rachel's uncle, St. Lucia is a good place to go. So trying to hit those biggies, right? Aruba would be nice. I have to practice my Dutch. And biggies right Aruba would be nice I have to practice my Dutch and definitely want to wear that Sun shirt down in the Antilles you get close to that equator oh that stuff will fry your skin off okay when you need fresh juice and we snap your new call the experts at cuts by Q we're gonna end with trivia and from here now we're talking JD and JD Vance.
Starting point is 00:19:06 So as you probably know at this point, about 24 hours ago at the Republican National Convention up there in Milwaukee, Trump picked JD Vance as his running mate, who if you don't know as a US Senator from Ohio, I think he's in his first term. JD Vance, I knew before he became a politician when he's a lawyer he wrote the book Kill Billy Elegy which I read pretty shortly after it came out. I think I read it in like 2016 maybe? 17 somewhere in there. And I remember at the time it was a pretty big deal not just among
Starting point is 00:19:41 right-wingers but like kind of across the aisle. It was meant to be a book that kind of bridges people together and let's find our commonalities. And now JD Vance has just taken the Trump pill. And I don't think he really believes it. I think it's just how do you acquire power? How do you rise the ranks in your system? And this is what he's sacrificing
Starting point is 00:20:06 personally, morally, ethically to get there. So there's all sorts of quotes if you go back eight years. I mean, you've probably seen most of them at this point, but you know, JD Vance calling himself a never Trumper, Trump is Hitler, you know, there's just, there's a million little quotes and sound bites. It's not hard to find. And now here we are eight years later, and he's the pick. What I found fascinating to me, and I guess when you consider it's Trump, it doesn't really surprise you. But the report I read indicated that JD Vance found out
Starting point is 00:20:39 he was Trump's vice president pick 20 minutes before Trump announced it to the public. Which I don't know, like maybe this stuff is a little bit more fast and loose than what do you always envision it would be as a kid. But obviously, you know, JD knows that he's a finalist, final four. All the articles have been out. I'm sure he talked to Trump about this before. It wasn't like Trump called him up out of the blue
Starting point is 00:21:09 and they'd never spoken before. But to find out that it's you, and then 20 minutes later, it's broadcast nationally, that's not a lot of time to sort of get your team together or get your thoughts together. So in that sense, I feel about 1% of empathy for JD. But I thought, hey, and I don't want to talk anymore about JD Vans.
Starting point is 00:21:30 I do want to power rank my favorite JDs, however. We're going to be a little bit loose with what's JD and what's not JD. There's going to be people with the first name JD. There's going to be objects. There's going to be first, last name initials. So just buckle up. We're going to go through this pretty quickly,
Starting point is 00:21:49 because it's 8 PM and I haven't had supper yet. Frankly, I'm getting a little hungry. We didn't even do an episode about the crazy tornado action here in Chicago the last two nights. Sunday night was just kind of storms out of the blue. It had been really hot and it was after Rachel went to sleep all of a sudden the storms hit like crazy and the trees were shaking so hard and blowing so hard they were hitting up against our window and it was scaring me. But I thought okay okay, I can handle some storms. Last night, if you were in Chicagoland, you know, it was
Starting point is 00:22:29 basically apocalyptic. There were so many tornadoes, like forming that the National Weather Service couldn't even keep track. And they just said, there's a lot of tornadoes happening. It was pretty ghoulish, the sirens going off, and this is, you know, nine o'clock, nine thirty at night, so it's dark. It's not like traditional tornado time, which to me is like five to seven p.m. traditionally. This was later in the night. The rain just just pouring down, pelting, and of course it's so dark outside you can't really make out like if there were clouds or not.
Starting point is 00:23:07 I saw a great funnel cloud video on Twitter in Naperville and it was just, it wasn't like a high and tight twister, it was one of those huge brooding, brooding, great verb, brooding clouds and moving super slowly looked huge as a huge storm cell. And I thought hey maybe they got some bonus footage for the new twisters which appropriately comes out in like two days I think. Thursday night is opening night for twistas. Maybe they got an IMAX in Montego Bay, we can check out. Do they, they have Twisters in Jamaica? I probably wouldn't, wouldn't translate, right? They don't know about Twisters. Okay, so honorable mention JD Vance. He's not really my, one
Starting point is 00:23:56 of my favorite JDs. I could probably come up with like 20 other ones who I would rather prefer, but I feel like to inspire the list, you at least earn your place in the honorable mentions. Number 10. Not really a favorite of mine, so this list is kind of going sideways, but he's a big kahuna in history. We got to comment Jefferson Davis. Jefferson Davis was the president of the short-lived Confederacy 1861 to 1865. I don't really know what happened afterwards. I don't have his Wikipedia in front of me. I don't think it was a Hitler situation where he hung himself in the last dying days of the Confederacy.
Starting point is 00:24:37 I think they let him just live in Richmond or Montgomery or wherever he lived, I don't know, until probably the 1970s. Jefferson Davis. Maybe the inspiration for my only webkins? I don't know. When I got this, it was like a tiger. I think it was a tiger or a bear or something. It wasn't a bear. It was a big cat. I had a webkins and his name was Jefferson. I didn't name him. That's the name he came with. If you missed out on Webkinz, oh, you missed out on a whole cultural revolution. You have the cool stuffed animal. You have the unique login. You get to go online, play fun games. Really a pretty fun concept. Number 10, Jefferson Davis. Number nine, Judi Dench. Dame Judi Dench. So she's a DJD. And if I had done, if this was the sort of show where you did research
Starting point is 00:25:34 before you start recording, then I could go into, oh, my favorite Judi Dench role was this. My favorite, you know, thing about Judi Dench is that I don't really know anything about Judi Dench, just that she's English royalty. 89 years young. Here's the Wikipedia. She has an Academy Award, a Tony, two Golden Globes, other British awards that we don't care about here. She's been married to the same guy since 2010. Pretty good. 14 years.
Starting point is 00:26:08 And in case you're curious, yes she is the great aunt of Oliver Dench, who was in a Brit box period drama, Hotel Portofino. Well, it's still going, so if you haven't heard of him now, just wait until Hotel Portofino takes off because then you're going to know Oliver. We call him Ollie in the theater business. Oh, she was in all those Bond movies. If I can pull back the curtain and get really raw with you for a second. I haven't seen a James Bond movie since I was a kid,
Starting point is 00:26:47 and my parents showed them to me. And there was one with Jaws, not the shark, but the villain. I haven't seen any of the other ones. And I've tried to play it cool. And when people mention it, I'm like, oh, yeah, ha, ha. That was a good one. I haven't actually seen any of them. I've just, no one I know ever talks about them,
Starting point is 00:27:07 and I'm more of a mission impossible guy. And I know this is a hot take. I'm not like, oh yeah, James Bond, I don't really like it that much. I think I would like it. It's just never really happened. Same way I've never seen Zootopia 2. I don't think there is a Zootopia 2 but you figure they would give you me an advanced screening since I have it on
Starting point is 00:27:29 blu-ray Number 8 JD Martinez For all you baseball heads out there JD Martinez is kind of on the downward slope of his career But this is a guy who is like sneaky, really good. Let's pull up his baseballreference.com page here. He played notably for or has played for the Tigers, the Red Sox. He's on the Mets now, I think. Does he have any other teams he was on?
Starting point is 00:27:59 Oh, he started with the Astros in 2011. Excuse me. He spent one year in Arizona, one year at the Dodgers. Anyways, he's been playing since 2011. He's 36 now. Career totals, 1700 hits, 325 home runs, career batting average 286, which is pretty good in this modern age. 286 which is pretty good in this modern age and see if there's anything else that's super notable he's been a one two three four five six time all-star and a silver slugger a handful of times just a really good solid player a good power hitter and doesn't always get his due. So JD Martina is number eight. Number seven it's JD from Scrubs, John Dory and Zach Braff, Come On Down, an iconic show. Spent a lot of time watching Scrubs growing up
Starting point is 00:28:56 on WGN. They would show it in the afternoons. I don't think I was ever in a place where I was watching Scrubs live on the network as it came out, because what was Scrubs originally? It was, most of its run was NBC and then like, it was like ABC picked it up for its last season, something like that. But JD, iconic character, really frustrating character, but that's what you love about John Dorian from Scrubs. You root for him, obviously he's the main character.
Starting point is 00:29:29 There are episodes where he's, you know, heroic and you're really behind him, and then there's other episodes where he's a total douche. And I've heard Zach Braff is kind of like that in real life, too. So it feels very real, very raw, very tangible. JD's a great character, easy to empathize with. And I think especially if you've gone through medical school yourself, probably pretty relatable. So John Dorian Scrubb's great show, I think it's streaming on somewhere. It's got to be Netflix or Hulu, one of those two I think. And when
Starting point is 00:30:07 I've had time to myself here and there, I've watched a couple episodes. A very rewatchable show. That's the thing, because like Scrubs versus 30 Rock, 30 Rock is a much higher quality show, but 30 Rock, so many of its jokes and references are about, you know, specific time period or people. Obama administration, late Bush, it's essentially, whereas Scrubs, a lot of the jokes, there are some people and time period things, but a lot of it is just like Zach Braff's imagination and just visual gags and stuff, and it's super creative. Great music. That's the one thing you'll never get back if you don't have the,
Starting point is 00:30:43 like, DVDs or watch it in its original run. A lot of the music has been changed because they can't afford it, I guess is how that works, which is a bummer. But you could, your whole musical style, your musical interest could be like scrubs, and that's basically gonna be like Death Cab for cutie adjacent type
Starting point is 00:31:06 stuff the fray how to save a life I can you you step on me When you got here you Where I go wrong No, I was afraid somewhere I go around with all my friends, somewhere along the bed and ask them who they'll stay with you all night if I know how to save a life. It's exactly what Isaac Slade or whatever his name is sounds like. You could remove the audios from that track throw mine in there you wouldn't tell the difference Okay, I
Starting point is 00:32:11 Wish I could say that was the end of our singing, but who knows I don't make any promises number six JD like a law degree It could be higher because a J is a pretty powerful thing as a jurist doctorate You know I'm biased because I worked at a law school for almost five years. My brother's got a JD. But I really think out of all the academic degrees you can get out there in terms of the amount of knowledge
Starting point is 00:32:39 you pick up, skills you pick up that are highly applicable and relevant across just the workforce and the broadest sense of the word I think a JD might be the most valuable degree. You learn so much about critical thinking, logic, writing skills, you know, oral skills, and then just the amount of, even if you're not a top of your class A plus student, just learning things like contracts and torts and civil procedure and constitutional law, I mean, these things are highly applicable.
Starting point is 00:33:16 And then you get all your electives, whatever area you're really interested in, wills and trust. Imagine being able to write your own will, something I've dreamed of for 20 years. But I can't because I don't have a JD. So JD, Juris Doctorate, as in a law degree, that is number six. Coming into the top half of our group, number five, JD Suther. And you might be sitting there thinking, who the heck is JD Suther? What on earth are you talking about? Well, one of the most prolific songwriters of our generation, JD Souther, John David Souther.
Starting point is 00:33:52 Let's go to his Wikipedia to see exactly what he's written. But a lot of Eagles songs, some James Taylor. My favorite JD Souther song is Her Town 2 with James Taylor. Fantastic duet. If you don't know it, you have to go listen to it. Being Town podcast listening homework of the week. So, Eagle songs he co-wrote include Best of My Love, Victim of Love, Heartache Tonight, also about love, New Kid in Town. How Long. That was originally a J.D. Suther song by himself. If you don't know how long, it was like an
Starting point is 00:34:33 old song that the Eagles eventually recorded on their last album, Long Road Out of Eden from like 15 years ago. And then Her Town 2, great duet with James Taylor. Let's see if there's anything else that is kind of the big hits. But yeah, he's an excellent singer-songwriter. Obviously never achieved the same. Oh, Bob Seeger also co-wrote Heartache Tonight. What a lineup. Glenn Fry, Donna Henley Suther, and Bob Seeger. Wow.
Starting point is 00:35:04 Worked closely with Linda Ronstadt. They dated. Talk about a honey. Linda Ronstadt. If you go to her Wikipedia page, she's got a great fur coat on. Linda Ronstadt. I don't know too much about her, but it's a great name, Linda. Also Ronstadt. He co-wrote Don Henley's song, The Heart of the Matter. It's one of Don Henley's most famous songs. And he performed a song that was featured in a Johnny Depp movie soundtrack, Cry Baby, which brings us to number four on our list, Johnny Depp, JD. Give it up for Johnny. From Gilbert Grape to Pirates of the Caribbean 4 to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory I guess that one was called to other things. Was Johnny Depp in both black mass and Public Enemy? Was it Public Enemy or Public Enemies? Because one is about
Starting point is 00:36:09 Whitey Bulger, right? That's Black Mass. And then the other is about Dillinger, right? Public Enemies. Was he both of those guys? Sometimes I get those stories confused. And yes, he was. And I feel less bad about getting him confused when I realized it was both Johnny Depp. But yeah, Johnny, great actor. We'll see what's next for him. The whole Amber Heard thing, I feel like, was a real wrench in the kind of life. Remember when that trial happened? Was that two summers ago now? The trial of the defamation thing Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, it was like the big thing in the news. And it's kind of quietly faded into history, understandably, it's just a trial. But that was a wild thing, man. Amber Heard, who I don't know anything about other than she's an Aquaman. But crazy stuff Number three Something I think that we have talked about on the show before but it's been years
Starting point is 00:37:10 And so I thought it'd be good to bring this back up number three on our power rankings of JD's is the Jersey Devil Now you might be thinking oh, New Jersey Devils the hockey team. They're probably just named after Excuse me, I don't know, corrupt politicians like Bob Menendez or Melendez or whatever this guy's name is, this senator that got busted yesterday for corruption. No, Jersey Devil is actually something, it's a crypto, what do they call it? A legendary crypto creature or something like that. In South Jersey and Philadelphia folklore, the Jersey Devil is a legendary creature said to inhabit the forests of the Pine Barrens in South Jersey.
Starting point is 00:37:50 Most iconic, I was going to say Simpsons, that's not right. Sopranos episode is the Pine Barrens, which is a great forest, one of our greatest forests we have. The creature is often described as a flying biped with hooves, but there are many variations. The common description is that of a bipedal kangaroo-like, or here's a word for you, wyvern-like creature. If you're curious, what the heck is a wyvern? It's a type of mythical dragon with a venomous tail. With a horse or goat-like head, leathery bat-like wings, horns, small arms with clawed hands, legs with cloven hooves, and a forked or pointed tail, it is also said
Starting point is 00:38:34 that it has a strange elongated body and a thick tail. It's been reported to move quickly and is often described as emitting a high-pitched, blood-curdling scream. That's spooky. And if you're curious the origin of the legend, blood-curdling scream. That's spooky. And if you're curious, the origin of the legend, pine barren resident named Jane Leeds had twelve children and, discovering she was praying for a thirteenth time, cursed the child in frustration, declaring the child to be a devil. And there's a lot more to it, but for time's sake we're going to move on. There's witches, there's devils, there's clergymen, there's exorcisms, and there's pine barons.
Starting point is 00:39:08 So good stuff. The Jersey Devil, number three. Number two, Joe DiMaggio. How could you forget about jumping Joe DiMaggio? So let's pull up these stats. Jolt and Joe, that's his name, not jumping Joe. Joe DiMaggio, one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Probably his most famous claim to fame,
Starting point is 00:39:30 he has the MLB single, not single, hit record. So most games in a row with a base hit. 56, I don't have it in front of me. I believe that's the number. I don't think anyone's ever come close to it. I mean, that's more than a third of the season getting a hit just you know in every game which is incredible. Played for the Yankees all 13 years career totals 2214 hits 361 homers only 30 stolen bases Joe wasn't a stolen base guy.
Starting point is 00:40:06 Career 325 batting average, won MVP three times. Here's maybe the most impressive thing, named to the All-Star game every single season, all 13 seasons he was in major leagues. Bored 1914 died 1999. Jolton Joe the Yankee Clipper, Joe Dee center fielder Italian longest-hitting streak 56 games still stands today. There you go Joe DiMaggio number two also coached the Oakland athletics for two years in the late 60s which I did not know about and ran for I was gonna say ran for political offense no that was his baseball Hall of Fame
Starting point is 00:40:51 vote didn't get into the fourth ballot which is kind of shocking baseball is notoriously difficult it's it bugs me how different the kind of bars are for getting into different sports Hall of Fame things like football pretty easy I don't want to say easy but like much lower bar baseball it'll be like two guys a year it's like you're missing out on some of the greatest players of all time what what the heck okay to wrap up here number one you can't dethrone the king. And this guy, whoever he is, he's the king of cars, restaurant reviews, he's got those cool little trophies, of course it's our good friends JD Power and Associates. So the thing with JD Power, you get the whole package deal. Coming in at number one JD Power, if
Starting point is 00:41:45 you guys, if you ever wanted to sell a truck or start your own restaurant, forget the Michelin stars, you need the JD Power certified. Whenever I see a Chevy or a Ford commercial and it says, you know, we've won the JD Power and Associates Award for most dependable Ford F-150 10 years in a row. You know that's top on my list for purchasing a vehicle. Now, I've never purchased a vehicle, but if I ever did, I would go right to JD Power and Associates, and I'd ask him, I'd say, hey, JD, what car should I drive? And he would tell me, drive this one I say thanks JD that level of influence and power that gets you to
Starting point is 00:42:30 number one so to recap our list honorable mention we got JD Vance number 10 Jefferson Davis number 9 Judy Dench number 8 JD Martinez 7 JD from scrubs 6 JD like a law degree 5 JD Souther 4 Johnny Depp, 3 Jersey Devil, 2 Joe DiMaggio, and number 1 JD Power and Associates. Let us know who are your favorite JDs. What are your favorite JDs? Doesn't have to be a person as you learned here. Email us, bintangpodcast at yahoo.com.
Starting point is 00:43:02 Again, that's bintangpodcast at yahoo.com. Again, it's bintangpodcast at yahoo.com. Okay, closing thoughts here, aka trivia. We talked about JD Vance a little bit. Senator from Ohio trying to become the first ever vice president from Ohio, or at least that's something I saw and maybe it's true. But you're probably aware that Ohio is a hotbed for US presidents. By my count there's been eight total throughout history presidents that are from Ohio. So here's the game. It's pretty simple. I'm going to give you, excuse me, the years that these guys were active, and you tell me which president it is.
Starting point is 00:43:48 So I'm not going to tell you, oh, this was the 10th president. I'm going to say, oh, they were president from 1776 to 1784, or whatever, that sort of thing. And you tell me. There's eight of them. I'm going to go in chronological order for you here, and I'll give you all the dates. And we'll do their party as well.
Starting point is 00:44:08 Some history buffs out there don't need the parties. Some don't even need the years. But we'll see if that helps you at all. And I'll give you the range. Some of them have a range. And this first one is just one year, which is already a clue for you. But number one, the president served in 1841 that's it and he was from the Whig
Starting point is 00:44:29 Party okay so 1841 Whig Party number two served from 1869 to 1877 Republican Party so again 1869 to 1877 Republican Party. Number three 1877 so the next man up to 1881 also Republican Party and it's a fun fun little fact this guy was born in the city of Delaware Ohio which I think we've talked about before on this show. Number four another single-year president, 1881. And this guy was also in the Republican Party. So if you're doing your homework at home, yes, that was three straight presidents from Ohio. 69 to 77, 77 to 88, 81 and then 81. All Republican presidents from Ohio.
Starting point is 00:45:23 all Republican presidents from Ohio. Number five, 1889 to 1893, also Republican from North Bend, Ohio. South Bend is in Indiana and North Bend is in Ohio. Number six, 1897 to 1901, born in Niles, Ohio and that's a Republican as well. So the first one was Whig and then the next five have been Republican. We got two more for you here. 1909 to 1913, also Republican. And spoiler alert, the last one is Republican too. 1921 to 1923, also Republican. The only one of these presidents from a significant city
Starting point is 00:46:10 is the penultimate one from Cincinnati. Everyone else is in these tiny little towns, like North Bend. OK, so if you had any, because we went through that kind of quickly that you really wanted to Ruminate on feel free to pause go back rewind a couple seconds give the times, but it's a mouthful to read And I'm just gonna give you the answers here. So coming back to the start 1841 wig party that was William Henry Harrison who caught pneumonia on the way to his inauguration and died like two months later I think. 1869 to 1877 if you know Civil War history at all you could probably figure this one out. It was Ulysses S. Grant.
Starting point is 00:46:58 After Ulysses S. Grant this is a tough one. I believe he's the only, or is that Buchanan? I think Buchanan was the bachelor. Hayes wasn't. I can't remember if that's right or not. But Rutherford B. Hayes was in office from 1877 to 1881. And now, just because I would feel incomplete without confirming this, yes, James Buchanan was the only bachelor president, not Rutherford B. Hayes. Taking over in 1881, just that year, Republican James
Starting point is 00:47:31 Garfield and two months after taking office, or rather six months after taking office, he was shot and killed. 1889 to 1893, the grandson I believe it was of William Henry Harrison is Benjamin Harrison that's the guy from North Bend Ohio and then our last three here 1897 to 1901 the second Republican president from Ohio to be assassinated the third to die in office. This is spelling bad news for JD Vance. It was our good friend Bill McKinley, William McKinley, assassinated in Buffalo, I believe it was.
Starting point is 00:48:16 Our penultimate candidate here, 1909 to 1913, was another Bill, Billy H. Taft, who was also the only president to be a Supreme Court justice, if I recall correctly. And on this article from Ohio SOS.gov, he has a sweet fur coat on, good for you. Looks like Linda Ronstadt. And then finally, 1921 to 1923, another, this is what the fourth one Republican president to die in office Warren G Harding from Corsica, Ohio Yeah, 1921 in 1923 Warren G died and Coolidge took over so Warren died in office McKinley died in office Garfield died in office and William Henry Harrison died in office.
Starting point is 00:49:05 Boy, bad luck. If you're from Ohio and you're thinking about becoming president, just know you have a 50% chance, statistically speaking, of dying. So it's pretty rough. Guys, that's what I got for you. Let us know, email, tweet at us at BeanTownCcast on X, on Twitter, how you did on our quiz today. Thank you so much for listening. Next time you hear from me, probably be in Jamaica or maybe if I get too much of the reefer, I'll forget to record and I'll have to do
Starting point is 00:49:36 it later. I don't know. That's what I have for you everyone. I hope that you are enjoying your week here. Watch out for tornadic activity and stay cool. My name is Quinn David Furness. We should cue up the outro music. Hope that you stay safe, stay sane, and I'll check in on you next week mon. Take care, bye-bye. So so so so Where did I go wrong?
