Starting point is 00:00:06 Hey, what's going on? It's Quinn David Furness. Welcome to my show. Quinn David Furness presents the Beantown podcast for Friday, June 26th, 2026. What's going on? What's happening? How are you? We are just about at the halfway mark here of season nine, year nine of Queen David Furness presents the Beantown podcast. Last episode of June, first episode of summer. technically. I am the creator, the host, and this show is from the visionary mind of Quinn David Furness. Doesn't it feel like when you get there's certain like shows or movies, the trailers come out and be like Super 8 by JJ Abrams or something or Avatar 2? And instead of just being like directed by so-and-so, if you're a quote, cool enough name. It's from the visionary mind of. Who are the directors that can qualify for from the visionary mind of?
Starting point is 00:01:18 I think JJ Abrams. Hey, I'm not making any judgment calls on these guys. I'm just telling you what I see. J.J. Abrams, definitely a visionary mind. Who did we just say, the avatar guy, visionary mind? What's his name? James Horner No, that's a composer
Starting point is 00:01:40 What are we just What is the guy who does the Titanic? That guy Like the submarines and stuff Avatar James something right This is one of the more embarrassing blanks I've drawn
Starting point is 00:01:57 We've drawn a lot of blanks On my time here hosting Queen David Furnace presents the Beantown podcast But this is up there James Cameron I think the worst part was, if I recall correctly, two minutes ago, I think I said it out loud. It's just trying to say it again, which is unnecessary.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Repetitive, dull. There's a good recap of this show. But other directors you could have a visionary mind of from there was a... Oh, Ridley Scott, definitely. you could definitely have projects from the visionary mind of Ridley Scott, no cap. I feel like Martin Scores says he doesn't really get visionary mind of.
Starting point is 00:02:45 He's more, you know, gangster movies, gritty, real. I guess a movie that just came out this last weekend, Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, which I've heard pretty mixed things about. But you could definitely have a movie from the visionary mind of Stephen Spielberg. Any others email us Beantown Podcasts. At yahoo.com. Again, that's being time in the podcast at yahoo.com. I think with the, you know, with the advent of Disney and Marvel and Star Wars and stuff,
Starting point is 00:03:16 we can put slot John Favreau in there from the visionary mind of John Favro. For a time, it was confusing because, I mean, there's, you know, we all know John Favro. We know what he looks like as an actor. Now he does a lot of directing and Marvel and Star Wars and all that stuff. He was Eric the Clown and Seinfeld 30 years. ago. But then there was a period when Obama was president where his chief speechwriter was also named John Favreau, but as a different John Favre, a much younger, sleeker version. I think he spelled his name with an H. And then they had that podcast for a while, right? That was like a big thing.
Starting point is 00:03:56 I think it was like during the first Trump presidency. What was that called? I never listened to it. I think it was like a big, you know, like left-leaning Democrat podcast. By the way, they both spelled their name J-O-N. If it wasn't confusing enough, it'd be like having two John Voitz. By the way, thank you to our good friends in Pakistan and Nigeria for making us respectively the 78th and 178th ranked comedy podcast in your wonderful nations. and, you know, from Bean Town, you know, streaming from Chicago across the pond and then some more ponds to get to, from Nigeria to Pakistan. What my message of peace and unity and visionary minds.
Starting point is 00:04:49 Let me encompass and embalm your nations. And in Nigeria, your tribes. I don't know if they, what's it, you know, I feel like an average. Africa, a lot of, you know, you have the, the obvious political divisions, you know, your standard countries. But, you know, Africa is a continent of tribes, right? And you certainly get that in North America, too, you know, with Native American tribes. And you see some of that in, like, Central America. You guys ever see, we're coming back to John Faber, I promise, you guys ever see that apocalyptic, what is it called, Apocalypse? Is that a Mel Gibson movie? I can't remember,
Starting point is 00:05:29 but it's like all indigenous actors. Apparently it's really good, you know, 25 years ago or something. I never actually saw it, but every once in a while I see a clip online. Or there's like a famous, not a meme, but like video reference from it when they like the camera pans from the indigenous guys to the ocean and you see the Spanish ships there. I've heard it's really good. I think the entire thing is in indigenous language.
Starting point is 00:05:54 So I've got to make sure that have the subtitles turned on. But I was thinking of either watching that tonight or, disclosure not disclosure day no no no disclosure from 1994 probably because i just finished the book it's base off of michael criton the same named novel the huge criton head which you all know but the movie is michael douglas and demi more and apparently it's very sexy kind of a basic instinct kind of thing so we'll probably pick from one of those two of course we got to squeeze it or on love violent and Jeopardy and you get a whole caval of things to watch. C-A-V-A-L-C-A-D-E.
Starting point is 00:06:33 And we're going to get to the Pokemon in a second here. I know you pokeheads. Finally, switched audio from your Pokemon Go to this podcast just to listen in on this one. We promised it last week, so we are going to deliver. After we touch on a couple more things here, we're going to finish the John Fevereaux thing, but I did want to mention him drinking some old style. I got a 12 rack of Heiliman's old style, however you say. and poured some into my, usually this baby only comes out during football season for Vikings games,
Starting point is 00:07:04 but my uncle Tunday, my late Uncle Tunday, who was the head of engineering at the University of Delaware. Blue Hens had a whole cavalcade of Steins in his office, Delaware engineering themed Steins. And so I pulled out the Stein poured in some old style. We're having a little pre-October fest here. and when I poured it, I got a, you know, a frothy head. And I just, this went through my mind because I was like, oh, is that frothy or foamy? Gun to your head, what do you think is the difference between frothy and foamy? Like if you have to substantively define the difference between frothy and foamy,
Starting point is 00:07:51 my autocorrect on Google, the first thing as I started getting into was frothy versus foamy. me urine. You guys ever have, I guess my, you know, from time to time, you know, you looked back down on the toilet and there's a bunch of bubbles there. Most of the time now than in my 30s, I feel like I've seen pee before, so there's not really much interesting to look at. But occasionally, that's an interesting thing. What determines the frothiness of urine? These are big questions. We would need to bring in a nephrologist, someone who studies nephews to determine that. Per the English language learner stack exchange.
Starting point is 00:08:33 This is like a Reddit for nerds. Difference between froth and foam. Can someone please give some example sentences to understand both words better? Well, this is more for like English language learners. Let's see. Spray. No, I just want, let's see what,
Starting point is 00:08:55 because a lot of these results are just like for language learners. And I'm like, I don't know. I'd like, tell me why do we actually have two words? What does AI say? A slight agreed upon difference in texture. Foam typically consists of small, tightly packed bubbles, creating a dense velvety consistency, whereas froth involves larger, area bubbles.
Starting point is 00:09:17 So what we're getting here is foam, small, tightly packed bubbles, froth, bigger bubbles. And then the first bullet point under the next section in health and wellness from the AI response. FOMY urine. While occasional bubbles are normal, thick, persistent foam can indicate excess protein in the urine. This can signal an underlying issue with kidney function. That's not good. Oh, and apparently infants can have frothy stool.
Starting point is 00:09:44 All my new moms and dads out there, email us if your kid ever has a frothy stool. It's probably caused by an imbalance between four milk and hind milk. What the heck is the difference between four milk and hind milk? Four is coming from your top, hind's coming from your bottom? I've never heard of four milk versus hind milk. I started to type and I misspelled it to fire milk, which sounds like something that's new. It's going to come out on the Taco Bell fall menu, fire milk.
Starting point is 00:10:18 Pair it with your Doritos, Locos, nachos, and you'll definitely have some foamy stool, I can tell you that much. Four milk and hind milk are not two distinct types of milk, but rather a gradual continuum of changing fat content during a single breastfeeding session. This is interesting. Four milk is the watery low-fat, lactose-rich milk at the start, while hind milk is a creamier, high-fat, calorie-dense milk that follows as the breast empties. You know, we've gotten really far away from John Favreau.
Starting point is 00:10:51 I think we could do an entire episode just going down the whole breast milk pipeline. But for the sake of time, we're going to keep going. By the way, the name of that podcast, Pod Save America. That's what John Favro, the other ones podcast, was called. It felt like that was a really big deal for a while. It seems like it might still be around. It airs twice a week hosted by a rotating cast of former Obama staffers. Yeah, so I guess it's still.
Starting point is 00:11:21 going is one of those things that I heard a lot about when it came out and honestly I haven't thought about it in probably three or four years I don't know how it's doing on the charts we should ask you know those guys who tell us our rankings internationally with Nigeria and Pakistan we should tell them or ask them how Potsave America is doing in those countries. That'll be something for next week. Before we get to our Animal of the Week, I will let you know, well, two things. One, the rest of this podcast is going to be very Pokemon forward.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Our Animal of the Week relates to Pokemon. Our trivia game relates to Pokemon. And our main content today is obviously Pokemon. So if you are just like, if you hate Pokemon for one reason or another, you probably don't want to listen. If you're neutral or a big fan, you'll probably want to listen because big, fan. I've got big takes. If you're neutral, well, it's just hang out with me for a while. Put me on, you know, go to your Apple podcast, put me on three and a half times speed. I'll sound
Starting point is 00:12:32 like a chipmunk. It'll be fun. Maybe I'll sing that witch doctor song, and so my voice will be high pitched and he'd be like, wow, he sounds like the real thing. Someone could this guy a movie contract with Jason Lee. The Witch Doctor Do do do do do do But ba da da da do But ba da da da ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba My sister-in-law loves that song
Starting point is 00:13:00 So yeah if you clip that last 30 seconds and put me on I don't know what the fastest you can do on your particular podcast app is I listen to all my podcasts on 1.3 speed for I mean It used to always be 1.25. You know, so you can do like, you know, half. 0.75, regular 1.25, 1.5, and 2 maybe is the top one. And then Apple did some sort of update a while ago. They changed it to 1.3 instead of 1.25.
Starting point is 00:13:35 Or maybe they're just rounding up and they got lazy. Here, I'll pull up my podcast app right now. Here, where's the speed function? it is yeah so you you have 0.8 1.3 1.5 1.8 and 2 apparently if you you can swipe to go all the way down at 0.5 and you can you can do 3 oh and you can swipe this is interesting to go by 10th so you can go 1.1 1.2 1.3 I'm on 1.3 and I've been doing that for a long time and before that was 1.25 so I think I'll stay there. I'm pretty comfortable with it at this point.
Starting point is 00:14:16 But yeah, you can go all the way up to three on your podcast app, which has got to be pretty gnarly. If anyone out there listens at 2 or above, email us, or maybe even more interesting, at half speed, email us Beantown Podcasts at Yahoo.com because either one of those extremes feels crazy. Like, I'm at the point where 1.3 sounds normal to me now, but I definitely can tell that it's sped up in some areas.
Starting point is 00:14:46 I think if I hit 1.5, it would just feel like my ears were falling off. Imagine going all the way to three. Three times the normal speed. I'd be talking like this. You wouldn't be able to understand what I was saying. I was looking at a podcast. I don't go about me. The whole episode would be 25 seconds long.
Starting point is 00:15:03 If you listen to that on three times speed, that's nine times speed. This week on the Beantown podcast, Quinn does basic arithmetic. So that's crazy, obviously. But the half-speed crazy thing is, or half-speed is crazy, too. I mean, if, like, my sister hosted a podcast, a notorious fast talker, I'd want to bring that baby down to 0.7.8. But 0.5 is diabolical. I'd never heard of anyone going to either extremes.
Starting point is 00:15:40 But email us or tweet at us or blue sky at us. if you have a particular experience or a particular take on any of this. All right. Our Animal of the Week. So one of the things about Pokemon, and we're just focused on Generation 1 here today, you know, there were up to like nine generations now and, you know,
Starting point is 00:16:07 thousand Pokemon, whatever it is. But in the original Pokemon video game for Game Boy, original Game Boy, they, there were 150 Pokemon, and they added one towards the end. So 151, let's say, the original 151. And I actually don't, I don't know if I fully understand, like, Pokemon names, because, you know, it's a Japanese game that was then translated to English, essentially. So they all have their Japanese names, and then they have their English names. So it's, like, who is in charge of translating? Was it, like, the game? developers or did Nintendo well Nintendo's the game developer do they have you know
Starting point is 00:16:50 Japanese teams and American teams and bilingual teams excuse me and they just like figured it out together I don't know exactly how that worked anyways but the thing with Pokemon names they really cover a wide array in terms of like how they're named you get some creative things like towards the back of the catalog there's these legendary birds they call them and you want to talk Japanese and English. Let me introduce you to some Spanish inspired fare as well. Speaking of Spanish fair, we could have power ranked which Pokemon would be tastiest. That would be interesting.
Starting point is 00:17:35 I'd probably, I think like a slow poke would be good. In fact, in Generation 2 they eat slow poke tails. That's probably why I thought of that first. Other Pokemon that would be delicious. to eat just off the top of my head. A chancy, maybe kind of fatty. Snorlax, I think, would be good,
Starting point is 00:17:52 strong, muscular. A lot of meat to go around. What wouldn't be good, probably in Onyx. It's just like six rocks. It's a rock snake. You know, hard to chew, I would assume. But these three legendary birds, their names end in, so it goes
Starting point is 00:18:12 articuno as in uno. and then zap dose as in dose and maltrace as in trace three so you get like some weird just you know numbers number them off kind of things you get um i'm trying to think of other things well it's going to lead me to our animal of the week eventually i promise i'm wondering if there are other variations where you're like oh yeah that's that's kind of interesting well you we talked about meowth last week and that's just like Oh yeah, it's a cat Pokemon, cats famously, you know, Anamotapia, whatever, meow, and then they just added a TH at the end, so you have that. You have a really lame fish that can't learn any cool moves called Magic Carp.
Starting point is 00:18:58 So just Magic Carp, and it eventually evolves into really badass Pokemon. So you have all sorts of odd, not odd, but just like a wide smattering of name. conventions. Electrode, which is, you know, it's like a Pokemon ball, but electrode is just like a straight up term in, you know, electrician school, essentially. And they just said, oh yeah, we'll just call it that. Kangus Khan, like Gangus Khan, but with a K at the front, at the start instead of a G.
Starting point is 00:19:36 And it doesn't have anything to do with being like a Mongol leader or anything. It's like this dinosaur kind of thing with a pouch, basically. like a dinosaur kangaroo but they just said yeah we'll just call this essentially gangus con like okay and that's probably my favorite Pokemon by the way but then there's also my parting thought here to get us to our animal the week there's also a handful of Pokemon that are just the names of animals and they just change the spellings and it's like 90% of the animal or the like picture, how the Pokemon looks is just the real life animal.
Starting point is 00:20:17 So there is this, there's this evolutionary line, which if you don't know, in Pokemon, you can have like, some Pokemon don't have an evolutionary line and there's just one of them. Other Pokemon, there's three of them in the line
Starting point is 00:20:31 and they count as three distinct Pokemon, but to get, you know, like the second or the third one, you have to train it from the first one into the second one into the third one, et cetera. So like when you have your, you know, everyone knows Charmander, right? And it evolves into Charmullian, which evolves into Charzard. And that's three Pokemon right there.
Starting point is 00:20:51 So there's this evolutionary line of ice water Pokemon, I think, essentially, these different types that they are. There's like eight types in Pokemon. This is your Pokemon primer. It's like normal. And I'm just speaking from a Gen 1 perspective. Gen 1, meaning the first Pokemon game that came out. in, you know, 1997 or whatever it was. Originally in Japan, green and blue,
Starting point is 00:21:19 and then the U.S., it was blue and red, and then yellow was like a special edition that came out after, but all part of Gen 1, Generation 1. There's like the types, it's, you have types of Pokemon and the moves they use have types as well, but the types are the, it's the same library of types. So there's like normal, which is your like vanilla, bland Pokemon. Then there's things like rock, ground, fighting, electric, water, ice, grass, flying, ghost, psychic, dragon. Although
Starting point is 00:21:58 in Generation 1, there's only one dragon move and one evolutionary line of dragon Pokemon. So it's kind of a special thing. Anyways, how did we get? Oh, the actual animal of the week. In fact, I just wrote down one of them, but we might as well just split it. We can do a special, since it's halfway through the year, we'll do two for the price of one. There is a line of Pokemon, the younger Pokemon, the earlier one, the baby one is called seal, just like your actual run-in-the-mill harbor seal, except this is spelled S-E-E-L, not S-E-A-L, and it evolves into dugong which is probably a lesser known animal
Starting point is 00:22:42 than a seal in general but dugong in real life is spelled I believe D-U-G-O-N-G and in Pokemon is D-E-U-G-O-N-G. And to make it even lazier these Pokemon look almost identical the only difference is
Starting point is 00:23:02 they make the D-Gong slightly longer and give it a little horn on its head like a, almost like a narwhal, but not that exacerbated is not the right word for that, but I think not pronounced as pronounced. You know what I'm saying. And so not only are they just named after real animals with a very slight spelling change, but pronunciation the same. They made them look like the animals themselves.
Starting point is 00:23:27 And it's just, what was going on there? Did you guys just run out of time and you're like, okay, we're just going to name this one after an animal? the flip side of that it's not really the flip side but i know mirror image of that there's a pokem called uh horsy as in seahorse but flipped horsey and it's it looks just like an actual seahorse there's nothing like interesting about it's just like oh yeah that's a sea horse there's a star you and a star me which is a Pokemon that uh is uh It's another evolutionary line. There's two of them, and it's just a, what do you call them?
Starting point is 00:24:13 A C-star, but star you? Star me, really creative. Hey, this is my, I'm not knocking it. Well, I am, but, you know, I grew up with this stuff. So it's all good. I'm not beefing with Nintendo at all. But it's just the wide-ranging nature of some things being really, like, unique and creative in Pokemon naming and then some things being like oh yeah what if we had a sea horse
Starting point is 00:24:45 Pokemon and we just flipped it so now it's horse C that's pretty cool right there's this one sad looking leaf Pokemon a middle evolution called gloom like just as in the adjective or as in like the noun whatever gloom-gloomy is gloom a word gloom yeah gloom and doom there is no doom I think they could have done you know gloom and doom as a little pair there. So I don't know, man. So that's our animal of the week, a seal, a seal and a doong. I've never seen a dugong in the wild, as I would assume most people listening to this show haven't. I don't even know where they live. We did that whole thing like two or three weeks ago about where do certain fish live and it's like bands of the ocean depending on like the temperature of the latitude. It's not like, oh yeah, they live in this sea. It's more so just like, yeah,
Starting point is 00:25:42 They live in the ocean and you can find them all over the place. I don't know what fish we were talking about, maybe like a flounder or something. But I don't know. Where do dugongs live? But I have seen Harbor Seals specifically. Shout out my boy, Andre, movie buffs, no, based on the true story, the seal Andre. In Maine, who came back to the same spot every summer for like 30 years. They made the movie out of it with Tina Majoro.
Starting point is 00:26:14 but no i've seen harbor seals not in main but in Oregon by where my parents live you can go to certain towns and the seals they don't call them harbor seals for no reason they hang out in the harbors and they they got these little like wooden pallet islands and platforms and stuff in the harbors and they just play king of the hill there'll be like 30 wet shiny bodies and there's room for like there'll be like 30 on there there's room for 30 and then there's like 15 more swimming around and playing king of the hill
Starting point is 00:26:51 they're trying to get up and it's all in good fun very loud so yeah seals what do you know seals and dugongs um we're going to get to
Starting point is 00:27:07 our top 10 most afterthought Pokemon from generation one But first, we are going to do two things. One, we are going to read ads, but before we do that, we are going to give you a quick PSA for all you Chicago runners out there all over the place, you know, certainly with bikes and scooters.
Starting point is 00:27:28 And, dude, people ride their bikes on the sidewalks all the time up here. I live on a busy street, so I get it fractionally more than if I lived, like, in a quiet residential neighborhood or something. but keep the bikes on the streets, same with the electric scooters. But my PSA, I was running in the park yesterday morning, like 6, 45, 7 o'clock in the morning, and a lot of the high schoolers, because I live by some high schools, Lane Tech and Amundsen and DePaul Prep and stuff. So they get together the cross-country kids, and they run, they do their workouts in the summer.
Starting point is 00:28:10 And so you'll have packs of kids that are like 10, 15 of them, high schoolers. And I'm out there just minding my own business on like mile three and a half of a run yesterday, early in the morning, totally zoned out. And the PSA, I mean, I don't want to spend here going through all the nitty gritty details of, oh, this happened, and then that happened. Basically, I got clipped by a high schooler who wasn't watching where he was going, took a tumble. It was my first tumble I've taken as a runner in many years.
Starting point is 00:28:40 since I got concussed by some fishing wire, like four years ago or something down by the museum campus. So I didn't go down immediately. It was one of those things where you were taking like two or three steps and you're slowly starting to tumble and eventually knew I had to go down. So I did my best to kind of tuck and roll to the side. Still landed kind of on my palms, on my elbow, and then kind of like went down and rolled. and skipped on my back and my ankle a couple times. So my hands are all cut up. Had to come home and pick out all the gravel with a tweezer and stuff.
Starting point is 00:29:22 My elbow, my right elbow took the worst of it. It's going to heal up just fine, but it looks pretty gnarly right now. And then kind of got red skin marks on my back and butt and stuff like that. So just at PSA, watch out whether it's fishing wire or, I don't know, this kid was like trying to go from the back of the pack to the front of the pack. I don't know if there was some 16-year-old blondeie on the other side of the park. He was trying to impress or something with his speed. But watch out.
Starting point is 00:29:56 Bikes, dogs. I saw in another park, well, two things. Yes, or two days ago we saw a coyote, which was cool. But on one of my runs there, I saw this dog. off the leash go sprinting out out of nowhere across the path and almost took out this guy in a bike I mean he must have missed him by six inches and that would have been a huge collision because this guy was going full speed the dog was going full speed perpendicular to one another you know you get this clavicular guy trying to become famous and you know skull smashing whatever it is to himself
Starting point is 00:30:39 bone mashing and you know it's on twitch and stuff but i think a cool a cool influencer name for me could be perpendicular there can be a clavicular we could have a perpendicular come here maple what are you doing buddy it being weird because mom's gone why don't you just come on the couch and we'll do an interview with the dog it'll be nice uh and then the other thing of course i want to give a shout out to our good friends at home pride Oregon also to our good friends the Samson Q2U series, not the TV guide, but Cuts by Q and the Bean Town Sportsbook. Don't forget, Beantown Sportsbook, Bet Like a Better, Better. So thank you to all of the close friends on this show.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Who Help Make Bean Town Go Round. Okay. Let's come back to our notes here. We have our Pokemon list. And let's see, I got a slack later. in the day. I just want to make sure it's nothing too crazy. All right. There it is. Okay, nothing too crazy. All right. We did Animal Week. We have trivia at the end. Maple is looking very strange right now. Is she peeing? Oh my gosh, she just peed. Okay, we're going to have to pause and try to figure out
Starting point is 00:32:02 what's going on. And you know what? Let's, well, can we get this? We're going to have to run the show. And come here, Maple. Come here, buddy. She just peed in the middle of the floor, which is very unusual. No, we're going to have to, we might have to put this out twice. I don't know. Let's see if we can combine it.
Starting point is 00:32:24 Sorry, we'll see. All right, well, 20 minutes later, she, the dog, so Maple, you know her from interviews with the dog, peed right in the middle of the apartment, which is unlike her. We walked two and a half miles this afternoon about three hours ago. Went to the park, went to the dog park. Stopped to pee about 80 million times, which is normal for her. And then on your average day, she can go all the way until bedtime until she's got to go again. So no idea what happened there.
Starting point is 00:33:03 First time she's peed in the apartment in over a year. So hopefully a one-off thing. We'll see. But then the nice part, you know what? You know, do what you got to do. It's a bummer. Frustrating, upsetting. No one's happy about it.
Starting point is 00:33:16 Whatever. What grinds my gears is the 20 minutes afterwards where we go outside in the pouring rain, and she just refuses to pee outside. And so now dogs wet, maple's wet, not happy. Dad's wet. Not happy. And we got a huge stine of flat old style, which is really exciting. So follow along.
Starting point is 00:33:43 And I think we've done it once before with our current recording setup where we had to split an episode into two parts. And so it's been years since I've had to do that. I trust that we have found the proper technology to be able to fuse these two halves together. Although I won't lie to you, no cap. kind of halfway through an episode cleaning up dog pee, cleaning the floor, going outside of their rain for 20 minutes.
Starting point is 00:34:19 Not even like on a walk. You know, it's one thing if you're just getting a walk in, but just standing over and over saying, please go potty, please go potty. Then trying the next block. Oh, while getting doused. It kind of takes you out of the momentum,
Starting point is 00:34:35 I would say. So we're going to fire it up our top 10 afterthought, Pokemon, Gen 1, and see how it goes. But we'll see. Now, bear in mind, these are not underrated. There's a very stark contrast between underrated and afterthought. Underrated meaning like you don't really think to use them. Maybe you don't think of them often, but they're actually kick-ass, Pokemon. Afterthought is more so
Starting point is 00:35:10 it's kind of a little bit of underrated. It's also just they don't have to be good necessarily. It's just you forgot that they existed because that they're not really part of the main plot of the game. You have to go out of your way to encounter them. You don't really see them in media, whatever it might be. This is my list of top 10 afterthought Pokemon from Gen 1. I do want to give honorable mentions to what we would call the fossil Pokemon with one asterisk.
Starting point is 00:35:45 So it's like there's, I think there's technically five fossil Pokemon. But when you say fossil Pokemon, everyone kind of knows we're referring to the four. So you can get a fossil. There's two next to them early in the game. You can only pick one. So if you want to catch every Pokemon, you actually have to have a friend and trade. and two separate games, all that stuff. And so those are the fossil Pokemon,
Starting point is 00:36:09 the Helix fossil, and the something else fossil, I don't know. And that yields Cabuto, which evolves into Cabotops, and then Oma Knight, which evolves into OMA Star, and you can't, like, pay that off until really late in the game. And then there's another Pokemon you get from the fossil, you get from the museum, which turns into an aerodacta. which is not included in this list of after-thought-Pokemon
Starting point is 00:36:39 because it's a badass, like dinosaur, teradactyl knockoff kind of Pokemon, but more rocky. And the Pokemon champion, the last trainer in the Elite 4, Lance, the dragon trainer, has an aerodactyl. So everyone knows aerodactyl, because he's one of the main Pokemon and, like, essentially the final boss is Cavalcade. of Pokemon. But I do want to give honorable mention to Cabuto, Kabutops, Omanite, and Oma Star. Because they're kind of funky looking. You know, I don't even know, like, what moves they would have.
Starting point is 00:37:22 If you want to use them in Pokemon, you got to carry around these fossils all game and then just evolve them from the stones right away or, you know, at the end of the game, it's kind of, it's a whole big deal. So those are the honorable mentions. Number 10, lick a tongue. Now, we'll say this up front. Bad ass design. It's this jolly-looking candy cane, striped, bulbous figure with a huge-ass tongue, and it's cool. But in Gen 1, I don't even know where you got to go to find a licky tongue.
Starting point is 00:37:58 I'm thinking I'm like running through the game in my head and I'm like, gosh, I don't even recall where you'd actually catch one. And it's a normal type Pokemon. I don't think, I don't know if there are any trainers in the game you fight against that have licky tongues. And they're not particularly useful for any particular reason. So that's why licky tongue is, and usually you would just say licketong, but I like saying licky tongue. It's more fun that way. That's why licky tongue comes in at number 10. It's a distinct looking Pokemon, but because it's so rarely encountered,
Starting point is 00:38:37 and you don't really see much out of it in the media these days. I think maybe in the anime, someone had a laky tongue at one point, but I never really watched it, so my memory is not strong there. No, that's number 10. Number nine, I wanted to throw this one in there. It's part of a broader collection. Evie, this kind of dog-looking Pokemon. you can give it one of three stones and it will evolve either into an electric
Starting point is 00:39:05 Pokemon, a water Pokemon or a fire Pokemon. And I just always thought that out of those three, the one that is really just kind of, you don't think about it, is Flareon, the fire Pokemon. It's just kind of, I mean, they're all similar, the three evolutions in terms of like how good they are, just their different types. But Flareon, to me, is just kind of like, you never. really you don't really need it you don't really think about it it's just sort of not that interesting it's not that interesting to look at either it's kind of just like uh i don't know no no like fun distinct
Starting point is 00:39:48 features doesn't have like huge fireballs coming out of its butt or something which would be badass so that's why flarian for us is number nine number eight actually one of the one of the Pokemon I had in like my original lineup as a kid the first time I ever beat the game. It belongs to an interesting set of a Pokemon where they're, you know, you have to trade a particular Pokemon to get the third evolution. So it doesn't matter how much you sort of evolve it. It has, you have to trade it in order for it to evolve. And so that's from Graveller. the second gen pokey or the second the middle evolution Pokemon to get to the third one is golem it's a rock Pokemon it's just like a big round rock almost like a turtle looking guy but like
Starting point is 00:40:43 a big round rock with a head and arms and legs and he's just you know tough to get because you got to get the you got to catch a geodoo to evolve it into a graveler and then trade with your friends and that's uh that's how you get a golem not particularly interesting probably just really just really good defense. Rock Pokemon are not that useful in Gen 1. So it's kind of just like, why go through all the hassle? And then to top it all off, you just don't really see a golem in the game. I don't know. Maybe one of the red, blue, yellows, maybe one of the trainers towards the end of the game has a golem. I don't know. But you just never really think about it or see it. And in contrast, there's other Pokemon like that that you have to trade to
Starting point is 00:41:31 you know, to get the evolution, like a gangar or an Al-Kazam, and you see my dog is freaking out. Okay, we're going to have to do this three times. That's fun. Okay, part three of Beantown Podcasts. We officially have a cursed episode, which is a lot of fun. Having a great day with the dog, so that's really exciting. Number seven. So everyone knows Pikachu. obviously is the Pokemon mascot.
Starting point is 00:42:05 But I think if you ask your average casual pedestrian on the street where you find most pedestrians, what does Pikachu evolve into? And obviously diehard poca heads like myself or Lieutenant Surgeheads are going to know. But Pikachu actually evolves into a Rai Choo. And Rai Choo is coming in at number seven on our list of most afterthought of you need a tighter name for that Pokemon because everyone knows
Starting point is 00:42:37 Pikachu and in yellow the game yellow that's the Pokemon you start with but he can't even evolve into a Rai Choo which I think we were talking about last week which is partially how we got here so Generation 2 Pokemon they introduced Pichu which is a pre-evolution for Pikachu
Starting point is 00:42:55 a really bad tiny version of Pikachu well this is the opposite. This is Rai Choo. He's better. He's just like a big fat mouse. So that's Rai Choo. Number six, we already mentioned it. Actually, it was our animal of the week. I guess this is probably why we didn't want to make it our animal of the week, but I forgot that it was in my list. Number six is a seal. That's right. S-E-E-L, like an ice-looking seal essentially. Kind of swims around by the sea foam islands, not sea-froth islands, sea-foam islands. And just kind of isn't that interesting.
Starting point is 00:43:34 You don't see him much in the game. He's just kind of out there. So seal is number six. Number five I put in here. So there's a line and goes crabby to kingler. If you're not sure by the name what type of Pokemon or what, you know, how this Pokemon looks, what a crabby looks like. Envision a crab in your head.
Starting point is 00:43:58 And now you're looking at a crabby. Well, it evolves into a kingler, which if you're curious those, does it really change its look? Does it do something cool when it evolves? Well, what if I told you, it just gets bigger, but otherwise it looks the same. That's a kingler. Otherwise, I don't even know if you can catch one from fishing. In Pokemon, you can fish with different rods and lures and stuff. And I don't know if you can catch a kingler.
Starting point is 00:44:26 They are just kind of there. You don't see them in the game. Maybe one trainer has one. I don't know. I think they have like a signature move. It's like vice grip or something. But otherwise, yeah, that's kingler. Not that interesting.
Starting point is 00:44:44 Number four, we mentioned it last week. We talked about it quite a bit. It's Persian. It's a cat. Miaoth evolves into Persian. And it's just like Miaoth, but taller, lankier. maybe more sinister. Miao is just kind of, you know, dopey, small.
Starting point is 00:45:07 But Miaoth is, or Persian, rather, is larger, taller. So that's Persian, but doesn't really do anything interesting. At least Miaoth has payday where you use it and then you get extra money at the end of the battle if you use payday. Persian is just kind of, all right, well, I'll just throw it out there. A very unnecessary Pokemon, I would say. Number three is a really cool Pokemon You can only find it near the power plant
Starting point is 00:45:35 Which is like an off-site quest Where you catch one of those Legendary Birds I was telling you about earlier Zaptos But this is electibus This is cool kind of black and white looking I don't know creature I don't really know how to define his look or shape
Starting point is 00:45:54 But he only exists in that one little patch of grass and is a cool kind of, you know, he doesn't evolve or anything. Just kind of doing his own thing, but you won't even know he's there unless you go off on this side quest. So cool Pokemon, good Pokemon, but electibus, number three. Number two, you got to go to the good old safari zone where you can try to catch Pokemon with pokey balls, or you can throw bait at them to try to get them to come closer,
Starting point is 00:46:28 my favorite, you can throw rocks at them. That's right. You can throw rocks at Pokemon in the safari zone, including Taurus, just like your, what's it called, astrology sign, your zodiac sign. T-O-U-R-O-S. It's a bowl. And it's kind of, you know, it doesn't really look like a Chicago bull. It's kind of more of like a slender, more sleeker. kind of thing. Signature move is stomp, although other Pokemon can learn it. It's kind of a catch-all move.
Starting point is 00:47:07 But you only find it in the safari zone, I don't think you battle a single trainer in the game that has a Taurus, and so for that, it's good enough for me to get to number two on my list. And then finally, kind of in the same vein as the electabuzz in terms of just kind of being off to the side.
Starting point is 00:47:27 Although I guess you do have to go through here to find it, It's the ultimate epitome of you ask me to visualize all 151 original Pokemon. This is one that I just would never think of because it's so just like funky, bizarre. I don't really know like what type of creature it's supposed to be. It's a fire Pokemon. You can only see it towards the end of the game in the burnt down laboratory. It is Magmar. It's like this fire breathing almost looks like a, you know, there's a certain,
Starting point is 00:47:59 type of dinosaur that walks on two legs as like a dilapasaurus or something like that it's kind of when i like a fire dilapasaurus but he's kind of got like smoochable lips like jinx if you know what i'm talking about i don't really even know i don't think i've ever played with a magmar in my life he's just kind of dopey looking he's got like fire come out of his head he's just kind of you know he's like orange and yellow. Really bizarre. Kind of the spiritual cousin to Electibus, electibus for electric Pokemon,
Starting point is 00:48:36 Magmar for Fire Pokemon. And, you know, mono evolution, or he doesn't evolve at all, whatever you would call that. And so that's Magmar, just kind of outdoing his own thing in the burnt down laboratory.
Starting point is 00:48:52 So good for you, Magmar. You're our number one Pokemon. So from 10 to 1, we have Likki Tongue. Flarion, Golem, Raichu, Seal, Kingler, Persian, Electabuzz, Taurus, and Magmar, with honorable mentions going to the fossil Pokemon. And now to cap off this Godforsaken Beantown podcast episode, we're going to finish with Pokemon as well, but I promise these are more well-established names.
Starting point is 00:49:24 So here's a trivia question. I Google the top five most valuable Pokemon cards of all time. Valuable as in how much money they're worth. And so there's five cards. There is a repeat Pokemon. So there's one Pokemon that appears in two different cards. So there's four total Pokemon in the five cards. Name those for Pokemon.
Starting point is 00:49:53 And we've mentioned some of these. not all of them and I will give you a hint four of them actually three of them because one of these appears twice so three of them are gen 1 and then one of them is gen 2
Starting point is 00:50:07 but it's a very famous gen 2 Pokemon so give it your best shot see how many you can get I will tell you and I thought maybe this Pokemon would have shown up or these two maybe neither mu or nor
Starting point is 00:50:25 mu2 show up in the reason results here. You gotta think, for Gen 1 at least, go back to the start of the pokey decks. That'll help you out. And for Gen 2, go all the way to the end of the pokey decks. So there's your polar extremes. There's no middle ones here. There's no crabbies, nor horsies or seals. These are famous Pokemon. So if you want any more time, go ahead and pause, but we're going to have to figure out how to edit all this crap together. Thanks for bearing with me on a tough, tough day here being Town Studios.
Starting point is 00:50:59 Pikachu is the most valuable card, and I don't have all the finer details of, like, oh, 1999, Pokemon Stadium, Special Minted Japanese Arena Edition. Like, no, I just tell you the Pokemon. Pikachu is number one. Charzard comes in at both number two and number five. Number three, the only Gen 2 entry. It's one of the legendary, or the Pokemon on the, like, version, you know, because it's Pokemon Gold.
Starting point is 00:51:27 which is a Ho-O, and then Pokemon's Silver, which is a Lugea. Lugia comes in at number three. And then we already know number five is Charzar. So number four, back to Gen 1 is a Blastoise, which is what Squirtle evolves into. Charzard being what Charmander evolves into. Both of those are what we would call starter Pokemon. So there you go.
Starting point is 00:51:48 There's your top five most valuable Pokemon cards of all time. That was what I had for you here. Thanks for bearing with me. Hopefully we got the editing all sorted out. For all of us here at the Beantown podcast, my name is Quinn David Furness. Thank you for listening to my show. Quinn Davis Furness presents the Beantown podcast. We'll check in on you next week.
Starting point is 00:52:06 Stay safe. Stay sane. See ya.
