Hey, what's going on? It's Quinn David Furness. Welcome to my show.
Quinn David Furness presents the Beantown podcast for Saturday, August 29th, 2026. What's going on? What's happening? How are you?
I am the creator, the host, and the chief bean cultivator. I'm drinking a coffee right now. It's 10 a.m. in the morning.
A little bit too early for a beer of this program. Queen David Furness presents.
Bean Town Podcast. Although I will say this, the thought crossed my mind once or twice to have a beer
this morning, not for the show per se, but I've got a half marathon two weeks from this morning.
And I ran out here in the suburbs at the in-laws right now. I did a cool 11.5 miles,
my last tune-up, as they would say, before the trail race and running in two weeks here.
And I thought, you know, we got, I bought a bunch of Miller Lights yesterday at Jewel, just to have for the house.
You know, you bring a, you know, a dowry, basically, to the in-laws in exchange for letting them, them letting me marry their daughter.
So you bring your offering of Miller Lights.
This is not expected nor required, but it's something I do for fun.
and because I was already going to get myself some beers.
But some Miller lights, the barefoot wine, the peanut grease, you're all that good stuff.
Anyways, the point I'm trying to make is, you know, they say beer is a pretty, it's a good kind of recovery drink.
You know, you finish a race, anything more than a 10K or so, they hand you a beer.
I once drank, the last marathon I ran, I drank a PBR in the last like,
two miles. It was a really tough, challenging race, and by the end of it I was barely moving.
So some kind fellow on a Michigan Ave had a core of PBRs and was tossing them out.
So I had one to finish my race and then, you know, one obviously, one or two at the post-race,
finish line party, et cetera. But I think it's something to do with the carbs, I don't know,
in a beer of like recharging and refueling you i think i don't know i'm not a nutritionist
or a dietologist you can email this beantown podcast at yahoo dot com and that's beattown
podcast at yahoo dot com the science behind drinking beer as a you know recovery everyone you know
all these high profile athletes gabby douglas michael jordan manti teo
they're all, you know, with Gatorade or Propel or Powerade or, you know, For Loco, whatever it is.
No, just give me a nice PBR Miller Lite for my recovery.
The actual point of the story is I did not have one.
So I spent the last 30 minutes talking about how I was thinking about having one and then ultimately did not have one.
But it's on my to-do list for the rest of the day, is to have a crisp light beer.
I also got a six-pack.
I don't remember the name of the brewery,
but it's in Indianapolis or Bloomington, Indiana, something like that.
Maybe it's Bloomington, where the university is.
It's like the artwork is like a dragonfly.
And I don't remember if that's because of the brewery or the beer, which is an IPA.
But it was like going down the entire craft selection at this particular jewel at whatever it is,
87th and I don't know.
And it's not a particularly, you know, well-resourced, well-stocked craft selection.
It's not terrible, but it's not the widest selection.
But this was, I think, the one out of everything, the one that I had never seen before nor tried.
I think, you know, everything else from your Laganitas to your revolutions, to your mango carts, and so on and so forth.
had had at least once. But this was one I hadn't seen or had before. So I've got those
chilling in the fridge, the garage fridge. Greatest part about the suburbs is garage
fridges. So got that on my to-do list in the pool later this afternoon. It should be a good
time. And we are here. I'll do a quick shout out. First, I will let you know,
listener discretion advised when you're listening to this program. Number one, we'll
occasionally some language. Number two, I don't know why I said it like that. Number two,
this podcast is objectively terrible. Shout out to my sister-in-law, my youngest sister-in-law,
Samantha. That's her 23rd birthday. Is that what we're thinking? I think so. When you graduate
college, that year, that general year, you turn 22, right? She's got a late birthday.
And so after a year of grad school, you would be 22 turning 23, which is what today is.
So it's got to be 23.
Michael Jordan's number.
Was Kobe 23 as well?
I can't remember.
I don't think so.
Kobe had like two different numbers, right?
He like switched at some point in his career.
And then he died.
But before the helicopter he had switched.
I don't remember what were the 24.
Kobe was definitely a 24.
But I thought he had another one.
as well, was it like an eight.
Kobe was like a 24 and an eight.
I think that's right without looking it up.
What number is LeBron been?
Wasn't he like six on the heat or something like that?
I don't know what his actual number is,
which is kind of embarrassing.
Player numbers is one of those things where it's like,
I don't really think about it that much,
nor do I care about it.
But there are some people where you just like,
no instinctively.
It's like, oh yeah, obviously.
For me, that's like, oh, yeah, Michael Jordan, he's 23.
Although Michael Jordan also wore like a 45 once.
I think there were some, or maybe it was a whole season,
and then there might have been like one random game
where there was like a mix-up with the jerseys
and he had to wear random, like a 22 or something like that.
I don't remember the story behind that.
You guys can look it up and let me know.
But, you know, there's others like Patrick Kane,
Blackhawks, legend, 88.
You just know.
For me, it's like Derek Lee, 25, Cubs first baseman.
the mid-2000s you know some things you just know justin jefferson 18 i think probably the the most
obvious football example for me personally randy moss 84 Vikings i still can't see any it doesn't matter
if it's the vikings or any other team anyone else any time i see the number 84 in football i'm just
instantly like oh yeah that's randy moss's number i don't know are there in any other numbers across
any sport where you see that particular number and you're just like, oh, that's weird that
someone else could actually wear that number because that is just like his number.
I guess Jackie Robinson is probably the most striking example of that because it's just,
you know, a number retired across an entire sport, baseball 42.
I don't think there's anyone else like that.
I don't think there's any other sports where it's just like, yeah, you can't, like, not
just your team, the entire league isn't going to wear this number.
But if I'm missing something, let me know.
Pretty cool.
Good job, Jackie.
Our thanks go out, of course, as always, to our good friends in Pakistan.
Thank you, Lahore.
Thank you, Karachi.
Thank you, Dushan Bay.
That was a Jeopardy, I think it was an incorrect answer.
Someone, it was the capital of Turkmenistan.
And someone said, Dushan Bay, which I think is Tajikistan, maybe, don't know.
but the answer was Ashgabat, I think, or maybe I got mixed up.
Regardless, thank you for making us the 70, what are we up to?
78th ranked comedy podcast in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
These rankings change so often.
It's hard to keep track.
And of course, Nigeria, Lagos, Abuja, Benin City.
I feel like I've been trying to come up with that name, Benin City, for like four straight shows now,
and I haven't been able to grasp it.
And today it just happened.
Maybe it's because I got the coffee.
I'm buzzing.
I got the clear brain rather than being half a craft beer in.
Kind of changes the brain fog.
Thank you, Nigeria, for making us the 178th ranked comedy podcast in your esteemed nation.
We were just talking about brain fog.
My sister-in-law's birthday, as had mentioned, she had some brain fog this morning when we were talking this morning.
And it reminded me, as she said that, this was like a year ago.
I think it was like last summer.
You know, it's a summer afternoon.
You're in the pool.
You're hanging out.
You don't want to get out and walk all the way to the garage to, you know,
fix yourself another beverage or grab a beer or whatever it is.
So she, Samantha, she comes around and asks if I want something to drink and I say,
oh, absolutely.
Thank you.
So she made me a mixed cocktail.
This was a one and done type of thing.
And we should get her on the show.
Unfortunately, she's.
She's out at breakfast right now.
I would have loved to get her on the show right here to go on the record to explain what actually went into this cocktail.
I have no idea.
And it's the other thing.
The other piece of this is like, I don't know if it was some sort of prank, like I'm going to make the worst tasting drink of all time to prank my, you know,
sister's husband or if it was like a good faith effort that just didn't come together.
But this was rough.
I can't even, I've really blocked out the memory.
Those particular taste buds that were exposed to that have been, you know,
singed off and shipped to Walter Reed for medical science research.
But I, honestly, a year later, I don't remember exactly what went into it, excuse me,
but I think it was like something involving fireball, tap water,
A fruity mixer and maybe some tonic water or something.
If you're sitting there thinking that doesn't sound like it would work,
you're sniffing down the right rabbit hole, foxhole, whatever.
It was rough.
So I think these days I will get out of the pool and maybe make my own beverage
or provide more specific written instructions that I can laminate,
hang around my neck.
Anyone ever do that when you go to the, this is silly, I'm not being realistic, but you go to the all-inclusives.
You already got the, like, laminated pouch that you put your phone in because people just have to have their phones around their necks.
Maybe, you know, if you're in some foreign country where you don't speak the language like Cancun.
You don't know how to order a cocktail in Spanish because no one there speaks English.
You can write down your drink order, you know, go to Google Translate, print out the sheet.
and, you know, print it out, put it in your little laminate so it doesn't get wet.
So you swim up to the pool bar and say, you know, I don't know how to say
Pinia colada and Espanol Porfavor, but here's my sheet that tells you I want a pinocalada.
That way you can communicate, okay?
This is how we get stuff done.
Of course, you could just use your phone to, you know, do the live translation.
I've seen that, I think it's, is it chat GPT?
I don't remember who's like really getting into the live translation game these days,
but they have like an ad running where it's some,
some little chika talking to her abolita or something,
and, you know, they're communicating thanks to chat GPT
because the little seven-year-old can't take five minutes
to learn some common Spanish phrases.
Kids these days, man.
We've got an animal of the week here, and then we've got a fun out-a, kind of out-of-left-field power ranking we're going to do that was born yesterday upon some observations down on my street.
And then we've got some Central Park music trivia, and we will wrap today.
We're going to try to keep things relatively self-contained.
Hopefully this doesn't go off the rails.
Again, it's like 10, 20 in the morning here.
Just chilling.
It's a nice Saturday.
House is quiet.
you know, no need to get nuts, like Michael Keaton would say.
I was going to say Michael Crichton, but that's not true.
Last thing that comes to mind before we get to our animal of the week,
I am slowly chipping away at my Michael Crichton, whatever you'd say, book list bibliography.
I think I've got maybe, because he has, he had like 15 or 16 novels and then like
three or four posthumously published.
I think I have maybe,
I think I'm about two-thirds of the way done.
But I mention it because I just finished his novel timeline
from the late 90s this past week.
And it was probably the first Crichton book I've ever read
where I was just by the end I was just like, man,
this thing's got to wrap up.
I am not interested at all in what happens.
Yeah, I didn't enjoy it. It's an interesting premise. It combines quantum physics with the medieval age.
But it just did, this one didn't work for me. It really, more than most Crichton novels, really kind of, it had a lot of the fun sci-fi, hard science kind of stuff early on.
And then it really just kind of veered away from that and turned into like a teen adventure novel, which is just not my,
jam not my cup of tea and when i checked out the book the librarian didn't really comment on the uh the actual
book but mentioned to me like many critin novels this one had been turned into a
a film adaptation a few years after it was published i think it was like 2001 or something with
paul walker and uh well you know him from the third uh our 300th episode special gerard
butler and if you have billy connelly and stuff played it's a professor and she said it's one of the
worst film adaptations, Crichtner, otherwise, she's ever seen. So I'm at this point now where I
finished the book. And at first when I started, it was kind of funny. It was like, oh, man, this film
adaptation is so bad. I can't wait to watch it after I finish the book. But considering how much
I disliked the book, I don't even know if I want to subject myself to a two-hour film adaptation
that I know has a 13% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's just like, what's the point? Maybe I can watch a
YouTube 10 minute review or something that gets me some of the highlights because I don't know
if I mean I'm always down to watch a popcorn classic as we would say but I don't know if I just
want to devote if I was like single bachelor lifestyle had a whole weekend you know pre football
season just kind of dick around to do whatever yeah I'd throw it on and you know play tune blast
or do something else while it was on vacuum.
But in the current day and age,
I don't think it's going to happen.
So there you go.
Let's get to our Animal of the Week.
This one's pretty random.
I don't have any fun inspiration for it.
But I just, you know, what it was,
I was watching, we were lying in bed the other night.
And we got the Roku channel.
And so you get all sorts of like random live channels
that they push to you.
and, you know, we've, I think we've talked about this before,
but like, Price is Right and Fear Factor,
deal or no deal.
The other night, one popped up that I'd never been recommended to us before,
and I was excited because I've never really watched this as a TV show.
I've never, you know, watched any of the movies.
I think I've seen, like, the original movie they made once, maybe,
but I don't have any memory of it.
But big fan of the franchise and the games,
this was the Pokemon Channel.
Excuse me.
And there was, excuse me, some sort of,
race going on in this episode or they're running away from something i don't know but there was a dugong
in there which we talked about i think a dugong has been our animal of the week in the past and i was
at first i was like oh we'll do something like a dugong or something then then i thought i think we've
done that before so i said you know let's let's up the annie let's get something badass then i
saw a uh a video on reddit of a harbor seal and it was like you know we're sniffing around this so
let's commit let's go with the uh the uh the
leopard seal is our animal of the week i actually wrote elephant seal that's a separate thing i think
leopard seals are more badass you guys remember in uh that scamper movie scamper the penguin it was like a
russian movie or maybe it was japanese i can't remember maybe it was a syno sino russian joint
production speaking of joint productions a quick tangent we watched the well i think it was last
weekend last Sunday maybe we watched the new boots Riley movie if you remember the film sorry to
bother you from about eight nine years ago that was his first movie this was his second one and this
was called i heart boosters or i love boosters i don't remember which one it is but it's like keekew palmer
and uh gosh who oh uh will polter has a small role but it's very funny at the the main antagonist is
dimmy more.
And this was just like,
sorry to bother you, gets funky and wild,
and then, you know, they turned it up to 11 in the third act.
This one got turned up to 11 pretty early on.
So it is, but it's a great,
if you're looking for a great anti-capitalism,
classic Boots Riley joint, I mentioned.
It's a joint because I just assume he's a big pot smoker.
I don't know that for sure.
But you just take one look at him and you're like,
This guy probably knows his way around a joint.
So we watch that.
Five bags of popcorn would be my official recommendation.
But the leopard seal and scamper is badass.
He's hunting those little penguins, Snowflake Scamper,
and Louis the Emperor Penguin, or not the Emperor Pingua,
the macaroni penguin.
And then I think in the Happy Feet, too,
there's a great leopard seal chase sequence.
It's like Mumble, you know, Elijah Wood.
And then those four little, like Chicano penguins.
I think those are also macaroni penguins.
Maybe they're not.
They're like the little guys.
I don't remember what that species of penguin is called.
Kingfisher, maybe.
But, you know, they're running away from the leopard seal after they help Robin Williams.
He's got the, you know, six-pack plastic ring around his neck.
But those leopard seals are no jokes.
man, they're huge. What do you think the average, we haven't Googled anything yet today,
what do you think the average weight of a leopard seal is? Because these things are thick.
They're fast, they're sleek. They got big choppers. Let's just do a little Wikipedia dive
on the leopard seal. We won't go too long into this. I want to get into our power ranking here.
but the leopard seal is a long and muscular.
I like that seal native to the southern ocean of Antarctica and southern Patagonia.
Can I take a quick, a very brief side tangent, geography related?
When I was a kid, for whatever reason, it was like we're not allowed to recognize the southern ocean.
Some like atlases or textbooks you would see it referenced, others you wouldn't.
But it was always, at least how I was raised, it was like you got your Atlantic, Pacific, your Indian, your Arctic.
That's it. There's no Southern Ocean, okay? I'm not putting up with that bullshit.
And I feel like maybe I was just being sheltered from the Southern Ocean because I feel like it's pretty, it's like we're all in agreement now that it's a real thing, one of the five main oceans.
So I think I was sheltered from the Southern Ocean.
I don't know why. But it's real.
It's here.
It exists on Earth.
It's the same length, the leopard seal, the same length, but half the weight of a walrus.
Its fur coat is counter-shaded, being silver on top and dark gray on the...
Sorry, silver on the bottom, dark gray on top, and it's distinctive for its leopard-like pattern of dark spots.
I mean, this thing is badass.
You can...
I mean, there's a lot of different ways you can go if you want to just rank the most badass animals.
We could certainly do a show on that in the future.
And I'm not trying to say leopard seal is like, oh yeah, it's number one.
And then conversation starts at number two.
I don't feel that way.
But this is, you know, this guy's firmly in the mix.
He lives down by Antarctica.
He's lean and muscular.
He's got huge chompers.
He eats penguins.
I mean, hello.
It's an apex predator with massive jaws and teeth, which are one inch long.
He feeds on a wide range of prey, including pinnipeds, cephalopods,
coiff, fish and birds, particularly penguins.
It's only natural predator.
is the orca. Okay, you want to talk about badass animals. Throw a killer whale in there.
It uses its hearing and whiskers to track prey underwater.
All right. Let's get one more thing here. I just want to find the weight,
average weight of a leopard seal. Not as big as a walrus, but considering they're moving like
10 times faster, give them a break. They weigh between 440 and 1,320 pounds. That's quite the
quite the difference. Apparently females are larger than males.
Average female is 815 to 1100 pounds, but they can reach up to 1,300 pounds.
Newborns weigh 66 pounds at birth. A little chode baby.
Good stuff. All right. That's our animal of the week. Our power ranking this week is presented
to you by our good friends. Across the board, we'll name them off quickly so we can get

I don't think there's any leopard seals in the Bible,
but there's debate among scholars and myself of what actually ate Jonah.
Whale, big fish, squid, cracking, Leviathan, unclear.
Whatever it is, whatever monster,
lie in the deep sea.
You can pick him up with a Samson Q2U series.
When God speaks, he uses a Samson.

I feel like I joke around
with the slogans
the taglines I have a lot of fun with them
but I don't think of that
for all the gambling
platforms and ads out there
I don't think I've actually seen anyone
use the phrase better better
I don't know if it's just confusing
but it feels like a low-hanging slam dunk
speaking of
what I could have said
low-hanging fruit
thank you to our ad sponsors
My wife got an assayee bowl this morning, so I had to take 30 seconds out of my day to do a quick little research session on assayi.
You know, I think of them as like a West Coast Pacific Hawaii thing, but apparently they are from assay palms, which are also the trees that produce heart of palms.
Is that what it's called?
The vegetable?
The thick, stocky looking guy.
But the berries are assay berries, and they're growing.
in Amazon swamp and
planes, I guess. I don't know.
There was a different word, but...
So there you go. Asa'i.
Berries are from Brazil.
Who knew? Not me.
If you put a gun to my head and ask me
before I researched that, I would have said,
well, it doesn't seem like a U.S. thing.
I probably would have said something stupid,
like the Sandwich Islands,
which I think is actually Hawaii.
So it is a U.S. thing.
But I probably would have guessed that,
or I think I would have guessed something like Mexico
or Costa Rica.
Costa Rica actually is home to 90% of the world's known plant species exist in Costa Rica,
which is a pretty cool fact.
So there you go.
Spread that around.
Our power ranking today, we are power ranking pounds.
P-O-U-N-D-S, power-ranking the pounds, different pounds, types of pounds, etc.
You'll figure it out as we go along here.
Yesterday morning, we live above a busy street here in Chicago.
And my wife pointed out to be a carway's getting towed for parking in a bus stop zone.
Stupidly, I don't know.
It's a wide open street with paid parking, not like a, not like, you know, hard to find a spot.
It's like, yeah, if you can park in the neighborhood if you're good at parallel parking,
or you can take a wide open spot and pay for it on the street.
Those are two pretty good options.
or you can park illegally in a bus zone paid or not or pay for it or not and get towed.
So tough way to start your Friday morning for whomever that dummy was.
I don't know.
Just hard to fathom.
But then we were talking about, oh, yeah, I thought in my head like, oh, I wonder what pound those cars go to if you get towed up here.
That's one of my not, like, biggest fears because I don't plan on getting towed anytime soon.
But I would always worry about, like, oh, if my car got towed,
you know, where would I even look?
How do I know where to find it?
Who do I call?
Probably 3-1-1, but it just sounds like not a pleasant experience.
Usually when you think about your car, you're going to tow it,
you're like, ah, damn, I got to go to the pound and pay a couple hundred bucks.
They want in cash.
It's going to be a pain in the ass.
But it's like, how do I even find my car?
Then I turned around and I saw my dog, Maple, with her big, wide bug eyes,
and thought, you know what?
What do you think is worse?
The auto pound or the dog pound?
Because that's where we got maple from the dog pound.
And we added eight pounds to the mix,
and now you have a top 10 list, power ranking pounds.
This is from bad to good, essentially, is how I've tried to order these.
So coming in, 10 and 9 will be no surprise because we've already talked about them a little.
But number 10, the dog pound, where you can find dogs of all shapes, sizes, and temperaments.
And, yeah, I mean, I guess where we got maple from, you wouldn't, like, classified as your traditional pound.
It's a little bit more humane than that.
It's the humane society, essentially.
Animal shelter, right?
We're not supposed to use those terms dog pound anymore, but for all intents and purposes.
Or if you're a horse, one of our horse names, intensive purposes, it was the dog pound.
And I think dog pound takes the tent spot.
It's worse than the auto pound.
because it's, you know, there's a lot of barking, whining, peeing.
And it's still just about as expensive to adopt a dog from the dog pound,
if not more than to actually get your car from the auto pound or the impound lot.
I think Maple's adoption fee alone was like $350 or something.
So it's not cheap.
Like, you're, it's, when you think about like, oh, I'll just adopt a dog.
I mean, there's a million reasons why you might want to adopt a dog rather than,
a puppy but one of the reasons in my mind is like oh you actually it's it's more affordable and uh i mean
depending on your puppy you're probably paying more than whatever maple is 300 350 something like that
but it's not like a crazy amount more unless you're someone who really wants to splurge and and do a
thousand two thousand on puppies and i know that market exists but i don't know maybe i'm living in
the past thinking like i wouldn't want to pay more than a couple hundred
$100 for a puppy.
But because it's a little bit more sentient, we'll put dog pound at number 10, auto pound
number nine.
I always think when I drive past an auto pound or, you know, any sort of like mechanic
with like a million cars out in the lot or the field or whatever, it's like, man, all
of those cars, like, how do they get here?
Each one of those has a store.
Each one has an owner.
maybe it's just like the efficiency mindset of me where it's like everything i feel like i
own or possess has a like unique purpose and there's like a significant reason why i possess this
and more more of like a minimalist mindset so the opposite of that is when you drive past a
it doesn't even have to be an auto pound but just anything where there's like a bunch of
you know mechanic with a bunch of cars and it's like man how did all these cars get here like
and are they just going to like sit there and rot away slowly over the next millennium?
I don't know.
I think about stuff like that.
Let us know if you think about it to Beantown Podcast at Yahoo.com or tweet at us at Beantowncast.
All right.
Getting into some fresh material here, number eight, there's a lot of different ways this can be applied just by default.
But I'm thinking more of the human body perspective.
we're going pounds as in LBs.
And there's different things I could talk about.
Two things, though, that I want to mention before we keep going.
One, it's number eight, so still relatively negative.
Because I just feel like, for the most part, it's, we're all fighting a losing uphill battle as we get older.
It's just, the LBs just kind of naturally accumulate, even if you're running five days a week, doing your push-ups, eating healthy,
you got your bean salad going.
It's like all you got to do is have one Miller light at the end of your 11.5 mile run.
And it's like those LBs just balloon.
So it's something I was much more hampered by or cognizant of a decade ago.
And now I'm just kind of like, yeah, we're just going to live our lives and do our best.
and just not weigh myself as much.
Essentially is where I've landed mentally,
and I'll just be okay with it.
The other things, though,
other thing about pounds is LBs.
Let's get to the bottom of this abbreviation.
I know we're not the first person
to ask this question or investigate this.
But the Latin root, here we go.
The abbreviation comes from the Latin word Libra,
which means balance or scales,
and the phrase Libra Pondo,
meaning a pound by weight, the S.
Well, LB is technically the singular form.
Adding an S became the standard everyday plural in English.
So Latin.
There you go.
Libra Pondo.
Not a terrible horse name.
Not the best.
That could be an honor.
We'll mention maybe.
That's number seven.
Number six, let's jump into the way back machine for all you playheads out there,
playwrights.
etc a pound of flesh that's right we're digging into the merchant of venice shylock his famous
uh quote i don't know line from merchant of venice he wants antonio if he can't pay him back for the
ship loan or whatever it is he wants a pound of his flesh you know uh shilock the jewish
uh financier f i n a n c i er
from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice.
That was one of the ones I read when I was in like a Shakespeare class in like fifth grade or something.
And I actually liked it quite a bit.
It's labeled a comedy, but it's, I mean, it's not a not really slapstick, if you will.
I think, I don't know, I think the Merchant of Venice is kind of an underrated one,
just broadly across the Shakespeare, Pantheum,
whatever word.
Is Pantheum a word?
Pantheon?
Pantheum is not a word.
It sounds like a Greek-style theater
where the band Fun or Bleachers is playing in L.A. in October, the Pantheum.
But, you know, you talk about Shakespeare.
Everyone knows, I mean, pretty much all of them,
but certainly your Romeo and Julietts, your Hamlets,
your Midsummer Night's Dream,
Julius Caesar, this week on the Beantown podcast,
Quinn names all the William Shakespeare plays that come to mind.
Don't even get me into the histories.
King Henry IV, Part 1, or is it Henry V as part 1 and part 2?
I think King Henry the 4th is just by itself,
and Henry 5th has 1 and 2.
False staff, I think that's how it goes,
comedy of airs.
I could keep going because obviously I know a lot more Shakespeare plays.
I actually do, but that's neither here nor there.
That kind of sounds like it could be a Shakespeare play, doesn't it?
Neither here nor there.
If we can do all as well, that ends well, we can do neither here nor there.
But I think Merchant of Venice doesn't get a lot of love,
but I quite fancy it, as they would say in Britain back in Shakespeare's times.
You know, I go get a front seat.
I'm a play critic in the 16th century and say, oh, merchant of Venice,
Shylock, I quite fancy this production.
Yeah, I probably could have been a play critic 600 years ago.
Number five, the British pound.
Do you guys realize this is still like the day-to-day currency of the UK?
I feel like when I came up with this list and I added it and it was like British pound
know, that's like Dutch East Indies, you know, 18th century pirates, you know, Jack Sparrow, flicking that guy a pound,
but in hindsight it may have been a shekel.
But the UK, they're still hanging on to the pounds.
I wish they would just get on the Euro train.
Not that it really impacts me.
I've never been to the United Kingdom.
Never even had an airport transfer, I don't think.
I've been to Brussels.
But never the UK.
but apparently they're still using the pound, which was, it just feels so old school, doesn't it?
Like, who out there in 2026 is excited that they're carrying around a pound?
I'm not trying to say the US dollar is super cool, but it's just a pound, really, guys?
But, you know, it's better than a dog pound, I guess.
I put it at number five.
Number four, a very versatile one, the pound sign.
And if you're younger than 25, you have no idea what that is.
call that it's a hashtag but even then i feel like you know there was a period obviously when
twitter came onto the scene whereas like hashtags were all the rage but now i think excuse me you know
initially like the concept of hashtaging something was very much associated with twitter
i think it's kind of migrated away from twitter because the keyword search is kind of taken over
excuse me and I think hashtags have really migrated at least in my opinion over to
Instagram where you still see people doing a lot of like hashtag you know xyz whatever for
you know SEO purposes maybe it still exists in Twitter and it's just not the tweets I'm seeing
but I certainly feel like I see it a lot more often on Instagram but the pound sign you know
before hashtags was even a thing and that was you know means signals a number is about
to happen and from time to time I will still be calling the pharmacy or something to refill my
dog's daily anxiety medication you got to hit the pound sign and then enter a code or something so
it's got some uses for sure but uh yeah the pound sign slash hashtag is number four I also give
an honorable mention to uh an underrated uh off maligned death cap for cutie album
Codes and Keys features a pound sign on the front of the album.
It was Ben Gibbard's album he wrote.
I think the only one he wrote when he was married to Zui Deschanel.
And the follow-up album, Kinsugi, was his first divorce album.
Of course, now he's got two.
But Codes and Keys is a good one, man.
People really hate on it.
But it's got some bangers.
Doors unlocked and open.
Sometimes that song just gets stuck in my head and I have to listen to it.
Codes and Keys itself, not a bad song, Monday morning.
It's not terrible.
Go give it a listen.
It's not my top three death cow album, but it's not the worst.
It's better than thank you for today.
Not my favorite.
Number three, you might be about to do a double take.
Say, O'Quinn, you already ranked this one.
Well, this is spelled differently.
This is the dog pound redux.
This is D-A-W-G.
That's right, the fan section at Paul Brown Stadium.
that's not where it is.
Paul Brown Stadium is where the Bengals play,
which is always confusing because Paul Brown was the owner of the Browns,
which is why they're called the Browns.
And then I think he got like kicked out or something.
Like someone did a power play, succession style.
And then he went and started another team, the Bengals, I think, is the history on that.
I don't know.
And that's why it's Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati.
But no, where the Browns play, I don't even know.
is it Highmark Stadium?
I can't remember what the name of their stadium is.
They're getting a new one in the suburbs in a couple years.
Right now it's kind of like Chicago where it's just downtown right along the lake.
But it's either like Highmark or Accresure, Accenture Stadium, something like that.
One of those is where the Steelers play too because it used to be Hinesfield and now it's something else.
Whatever.
But the dog pound is the fan section.
and when I first put this on the list,
I was like, okay, this is going to be pretty low,
but then I thought about it.
And I was like, Dog Pound deserves to be,
oh, I skipped one actually.
We're going to have to, I usually don't,
I'm usually pretty good at that.
We're going to have to come back to number seven.
I apologize.
But to finish the thought,
dog Pound is at number three because
as much as I dislike Cleveland as a city, a place,
I just have to put myself in the shoes.
of those fans, if I was a diehard Cleveland Browns fan, one, you already lost your team once.
They moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens.
Is that how that worked?
Wasn't it?
The Baltimore Colts became the Indianapolis Colts, and then Cleveland Browns became
the Baltimore Ravens, and then now this current iteration of Browns is Browns Part 2,
because there wasn't a Browns in like the mid-20s, I think, and then they came back in
like 98 or something like that.
I can't remember if that's exactly how it went down.
But just imagine being a fan of that franchise.
You already lost your team once.
So now you have them back, kind of.
But they're just miserable.
They're one of the two teams in NFL history to go 0-16.
And if you think your team has a shaky quarterback history,
let me introduce you to the Cleveland Brown.
So I thought to myself, you know,
and the dog pound fans are pretty well documented.
You know, they got the dog-themed stuff.
They got spiky shoulder pads.
In more recent years, you may see some brown paper bags over the heads.
But I'm just like, you know what, if that was my team, if I was born into that,
I was a diehard Browns fan.
I would want to be given some credit for the passionate fervor they show up with.
And they're not afraid to boo their quarterback who's a potential serial rapist.
I don't want to get into any legal trust.
don't want Deshawn's legal team coming after me.
So that's why, you know what, tip of the cap to the dog pound,
even though I have no particular love for Cleveland nor the Cleveland Browns.
You know what?
Game recognized game.
We skip number seven.
I will be quick because I don't have a ton to talk about with it,
but it is pound TM, that's right.
The technical machine, which is one of the two types of moves in Pokemon,
you can have a TM or an HM.
HM has like in-game significance like surf, you know, if you want to go in the water or fly to a different city versus a TM is just something you use in battle.
HM's you use in battle too, but TMs are only for in battle.
And I'm sure that's, there's been blurred lines in, you know, the last 20 years of Pokemon development.
But for the first couple generations that I know, that's how it worked.
The move pound is if you're if you're hearing it and you're like, oh, you know, Pokemon, I've heard of,
amazing moves like earthquake or blizzard or solar beam or hyperbeam or, you know, sledgehammer,
whatever it is, I don't know if that's actually a move.
If you're thinking, oh, pound sounds a little bit more light, a little bit more restrained,
you would be correct.
It is a very weak, like standard normal type move.
A lot of the, like, early Pokemon just have it as like their default attack move.
The one Pokemon I love who uses it, not that.
that this Pokemon using it is strange,
but it's, you know,
the Generation 1 Pokemon is messed up.
Pokemon games were messed up
in so many different ways.
But when you go fight the gym leader Koga,
K-O-G-A,
you're like two-thirds of the way
through the game at that point.
You got these like higher-level,
stronger Pokemon.
Koga's like this badass,
like Dark Arts,
Poison Ninja kind of guy.
And he's got this Pokemon called Grimer,
which is just like this big blob
of toxic waste
that evolves into the Pokemon muck,
which is just a bigger blob of toxic waste.
But when you're battling Koga,
and I think he's got both of those Pokemon at some point,
I don't remember,
but they both, you know,
in addition to like their more signature kind of badass moves,
like toxic or sludge or sludge bomb,
they also have pound.
And of course, when you're fighting these trainers
in these gym leaders in Generation 1,
and they just have like random move selectors.
And so you'll be in like a tough, tough-it-out battle,
and they're using their good moves like sludge bomb and toxic and poison gas.
And, you know, they're poisoning you, they're wearing you down.
And then they'll just like randomly use pound,
which is like a quarter as strong as those other moves.
And you're just like, oh, thank God I thought I was going to lose.
And then the wheezing or the muck or whatever used pound.
So it's more of a commentary on.
one than the pound move itself, but it's a fun one.
So I apologize for botching the order.
Pound was number seven, which is between pound LBs and Shylock's Pound of Flesh.
I got so excited to talk about the Shakespeare.
I just skipped right past it.
Number two, I will remind you, listener discretion is advised when you're listening to this program.
Number two is Pound Town.
And look, we're not going to go into a lengthy conversation on,
you know, what positions pound town could be.
I think my only thought, and then we'll move to number one,
because, you know, we don't get into the risque topics or that sort of thing too much.
But I think if there was one in my mind, if there was one, and this is appropriate because it's pound,
we've already talked about dog pounds, one position that best enables.
someone to go to pound town i think it would be doggy can't we can't we agree email us what what are your
what positions do you associate with going to pound town and that could be uh some fun emails to
read next week on bean town podcast after dark a new spin-off show that i just decided we would launch
but won't actually launch and number one because it's just so damn delicious coming in
at number one on our list of pounds.
It is pound cake.
A sneaky, versatile,
underrated dessert.
And I'm thinking specifically like Sarah Lee,
Frozen Isle at your local grocer.
But the pound cake,
you can do a lot of different things with it.
I think most notably it's a good base
for strawberry short cake.
Little pound cake,
little whipped cream, fresh strawberries.
You have a delicious dessert.
for, I mean, you can get like, you get like a carton of strawberries on sale, a Sarah Lee pound
cake and a thing of whipped cream.
I mean, you got dessert for the entire family for what do we think?
Like, eight bucks, something like that?
How much is a cereal league pound cake these days?
It's like four or five dollars, maybe closer to 10.
I mean, but if you can get like a in-season carton of strawberries on sale, what,
three bucks maybe, and whipped cream, I don't know, another three bucks.
Yeah, 10 bucks, 12 bucks.
depending on your market.
But I'll say this too, and I haven't done this.
This isn't like a classic fat quinn kind of move thing.
I think I've done this maybe two or three times in my entire life.
But I'm not afraid.
Maybe not so much these days,
but in my past wasn't afraid here and there to just get the Serely pound cake by itself,
forget the toppings, and just open that baby up,
got their little aluminum holder or tin, whatever it is,
and get a fork.
and just go to pound town on that baby.
And it's just, if you get it fresh, it's not too dry.
That's, you know, you might be thinking, gosh, no whipped cream, no bechamel glaze,
Zoui-de-Chernal glaze, whatever.
No, just, I don't, you know, I've never been a huge, like, sauces,
sauce-ed-up kind of guy.
I've gone around more to that since meeting my wife of, like, you know,
putting some sauce and stuff and using hot sauce more.
Certainly not when I was a kid.
I never put salad dressing on my salad or anything.
Never used hot sauce.
And yeah, I don't need any extra sauce on my pound cake.
I mean, it's nice to have, but in this economy,
everyone's finding ways to save, and that means sometimes your dessert is just pound cake,
and that's okay because it's delicious.
So that's my list.
Thank you for indulging me.
Number 10, dog pound, the bad kind.
Number nine, auto pound or impound lot.
Number eight pound LBs, number seven pound TM from Pokemon.
Number six, Shylock's pound of flesh.
Number five, British pound, number four pound sign.
Number three, dog pound, DAWG.
Shout out Cleveland.
Number two, pound town and number one pound cake.
There you go.
All right, to finish up here, our trivia question of the week.
It's a three-parter.
all the same kind of theme or category.
But we have one episode left.
We have the series finale of hacks.
And in the penultimate episode,
Gene Smart's character,
or character, excuse me,
does a show in Central Park.
Excuse me,
and that got me thinking about other famous
Central Park concerts
or performances.
So I'm going to keep this pretty simple.
There's three
three questions and answers here.
Each question I'm going to give you a sample
of three songs from an artist's
artist set list
from a famous concert in Central Park.
These are all kind of, it's a,
I think between or among the three of them,
they all happen within like five years of each other,
something like that.
So that's kind of a clue in and of itself,
at least once you get the first one.
But I'm going to give you three songs from these Central Park concert set lists,
and you tell me the artist.
So pretty simple.
And I think at least one and two, definitely each have one of the three songs is like a dead giveaway
because they're pretty famous songs, I feel like.
But then number three, I thought I would judge it up a little bit, make it a little bit tougher.
So here we go.
And these aren't, these weren't like sequential, like these three.
songs played in there on the set list. These are just cherry-picked across the entire list.
So, number one, three songs for you. American tune, late in the evening, and slip-slide in a way,
which I think that third one probably clarifies it for you. This one, by the way, not one person,
but two. So again, it was American tune, late in the evening, and slip-slide in a way.
If you wanted more time before I reveal this answer, go ahead and pause. The answer,
of course is Simon and Garfunkel.
I think probably the most famous Central Park concert,
but you know what, your mileage may vary.
Number two, I'm coming out, endless love,
and ain't no mountain high enough,
which probably is not a giveaway
because I think like a million people have sang that song by now,
but I think I'm coming out is pretty indicative
of who performed those three songs,
among others at their Central Park concert
So again, I'm coming out, endless love, and ain't no mountain high enough, was the incomparable Diana Ross.
And then number three, here we go.
You all know this artist as well, I promise, but I've tried to throw in a few songs that maybe are not chart-toppers,
but I know all of them and I love all of them.
The three songs, have mercy on the criminal, but your lip, get up and dance.
which I have a note on and sartorial eloquence.
So again, the three songs have mercy on the criminal,
butt your lip, get up and dance,
and sartorial eloquence.
Great word, by the way, sartorial.
It means having to do with clothing or fashion.
That artist is one of my all-time favorites,
Elton John.
And my little note, my last thing for you,
as we let you go here on the Beantown podcast.
Bonus question.
Which cartoon character did Elton John dress up as for his encore of But Your Lip, Get Up and Dance?
And I've read the, like, history on this concert before.
I think he was, like, trying to get John Lennon to come out and play with him.
But he, like, he couldn't do it.
And then, of course, the song Elton John wrote after John Lennon died was Empty Garden.
And the lyric is like, hey, John, can't you come out to play?
which is less sad because he was dead than it was when he was just trying to get him to come play with him
and perform with him in Central Park when he was alive.
But the cartoon character that Elton John dresses up as you can find the video on YouTube,
it's unhinged, it's extremely coaked out, is Donald Duck.
That's right.
If you ever want to see Alton John playing the piano dresses Donald Duck.
And bite your lip, get up and dance if you don't know as a banger.
It's the closing song on I think the,
Blue Moves album?
I don't know.
Six, seven-minute party anthem.
Gets to the first, you know, plays the entire song in like 90 seconds
and the last five minutes is just the refrain,
repeated over and over again.
So it's a good one.
If you don't have butt your lip, get up and dance.
Go give it a listen and find the YouTube video in Central Park.
You see Donald Duck playing it.
That's what I got for you here on the Beantown podcast.
Thank you everyone for listening to my.
program, Quinn Davis Furness presents the Beantown podcast. I hope everyone stay safe,
stay sane, we'll check in on you next weekend for Labor Day weekend. All right,
that's what I got. See ya.
