Hey, what's going on? It's Quinn David Furness. Welcome to my show. Quinn David Furness presents the Beantown podcast for Friday, September 18th, 2026. What's happening? What's going on? How are you? My name is Quinn and I am the creator, the host, and I don't know. Whatever makes Stalter is up to. You guys see her Emmy fit where she dressed up like an Emmy itself, the actual statue?
reminiscent of my brother Jack
I hope we appreciate this shout out
once dressed as an Oscar
for our school dance
that had a different theme every year
and one of the years I assume it was just like
Hollywood movies something like that
I don't even know what the theme was
but he went and painting himself gold shirt
gold shoes pants all that good stuff
it's got to be a picture of that somewhere
I think I went to that dance that year as well
but I don't if the theme was like Hollywood
I have no idea what my
outfit was
I have
I think it was
you know it says like a high school dance obviously
right we've all had high school dances
but I think they reached a certain point where I like
wasn't really going to my homeschool
high school thing anymore that put on these dances
and it was like a spring thing.
I think I was more into it when I was in like early high school
and then at some point I stopped going.
So I think that might have been like the last one I went to.
It started feeling like, I don't know,
like all my friends in that homeschool thing
were either like a year older, year too older than me.
I mostly hung out with kids older than me,
kind of across the board.
So I think I stopped going.
But I don't know.
I think I dressed as Bill Clinton,
which,
Again, I think the theme was Hollywood, so I don't fully understand what the connection was there.
Bill Clinton, Hollywood, there's got to be something there.
While we're trying to assess that, listener discretion advised when you're listening to this program,
remember we're in occasioning some language.
Number two, this podcast is objectively terrible.
I am dealing with seasonal allergies, a little bit of a heads up.
If the show does not go on super long, or if my volume, tails,
off. You could say my volume might tail off and might also trail off. I guess a tail off is more of a
subtle thing, right? You know, over the course of a minute or two versus trailing off is just kind of
like your voice basically just kind of goes like this. That's basically what trailing off is.
So I think trail off is more sudden, sudden change, as we would say in NFL terms. So it's kind of
of not that you need to hear the whole rundown of all my allergy symptoms, but so far the biggest thing
It's just like a crap ton of post nasal drip.
And it's a weird thing with my throat where I have a sore throat.
It's scratchy, not like really bad, but it's kind of a pain in the butt.
The throat is one of those things where you take it for granted and then one day you got a sore throat.
You're like, what the heck?
How did I ever live without a sore throat?
But it actually, you know, oftentimes, obviously when you have a sore throat, it hurts to talk.
And talking is like not what you want to do.
I'm in this weird thing where talking really isn't so bad.
It's just the swallowing I don't care for, which is what all of my exes used to say,
whoa, listener discretion advice, holy moly, let's move past it.
But talking is okay, knock on wood for the time being.
And I think it's seasonal allergies.
We got, you know, fall rolling in here, windows open, good stuff all around,
loving these temps like, you know, 70-ish with a cool breeze.
But I'm reminded of my seasonal allergies as well because I'm staring.
I'm drinking a beer out of a 12-ounce can, and I have a coozy, so I can only see the top little banner on this beer can.
And it's a half-acre October Fest.
It's actually called the Lager Town.
But the reason I mentioned it is in this little banner.
It's this orange banner on a blue can at the top, and you just see the word seasonal.
So that reminds me my seasonal allergies.
There's some flowers and stuff and an owl.
Half-acre, great brewery up here in the Bowmanville neighborhood, about two miles north of the world.
I live right now. And I was at the jewels earlier looking for a good quality October fest.
And it was pretty, uh, it was pretty disappointing.
Both between the, uh, the local guys like a half acre and the national guys, I think there were like
three or four October fest. And there's probably like at the end of the aisle, you can get like
the German beers. There's only a couple. I assume one of them was probably like an October
fest. I didn't get that far. But not much in the way of like seasonal fall, uh, October fest type
stuff yet and a severe lack of pumpkins as well not that i'm looking i feel like once a year i get
suckered into trying the pumpkin and then it's just sits in the back of your your fridge until like march
march madness is rolling around and you're like shoot i should have gone to the liquor store before
you know 12 hours a game start and you're just kind of like well i guess i'll have a pumpkin beer
five months later that's kind of what happens with the pumpkins but that is not the case with my
October fest. I will polish those off. Had a few last week watching the NFL, first NFL Sunday of the
year. I got to tell you, by the time I got to the Vikings game at 320, I was thoroughly
buzzed. It had a little bells, Oberon, and what else did I have some October fest? I had one.
this is really entertaining Quintox
about what he drank five days ago.
But no, I bought every year spiteful brewing,
which is next door to half acre,
gives me a coupon for, you know, five bucks off or something.
So the last two years, that makes it a tradition.
So I've done it two years in a row.
I've gone and gotten the goddamn pigeon porter.
I love a good porter.
You get a four pack.
And you get the five bucks off,
whatever it is.
It's a great deal.
And so I'd had this four pack sitting in the fridge
all the way since early March, mid-March, my birthday whenever.
I actually purchased it because I was like,
I'm not just going to casually sip this.
I got to save it for a special occasion.
And I was like, you know what, first Vikings game of the season.
It's nothing.
It's hard to get much more special than this.
So that's what I had.
There's something else I want to say about beers,
but that's okay because we just got to keep this moving.
We got a power ranking of top 10 spikes coming at you soon,
which will be a lot of fun.
first we got to say thank you to our friends in
Nigeria and Pakistan thank you both for
collectively making us you know top 100 top 200
in your countries
what's the you know the
you say respectfully when it's like
the first you know
data point refers to the first thing you said
the second one it's the second thing you said what's the opposite
do we have a word for anti respectively
so if I said
for example
thank you Nigeria thank you Pakistan
from making us the 70th and 170th ranked comedy podcast in the Islamic Republic or wherever.
But it's not, it's the inverse of respectively.
I got it backwards.
Irrespectively.
That's probably what it would be.
I don't think you can like actually do it.
I think the proper English is to just get your facts straight, literally.
But whatever.
I said what I said.
Our animal of the week, we're just going to like plow right into this stuff.
I would say the one other symptom of my seasonal allergies,
a pretty bad headache.
Not like debilitating.
I've never had a migraine before.
It's nothing like that.
But it's just kind of nagging.
And these things are,
they're just generally nagging.
So we're just going to get right into it.
And if we pick up some cool Wikipedia articles
or facts along the way we do,
but otherwise, you know what,
you get in with,
here's the thing with the Beantown podcast,
you get in, you get out.
you don't have to linger.
Put me on three times speed.
Give me that, you know, play so I can keep these ad dollars coming in.
But otherwise, just get in, get out.
There's better stuff out there to listen to.
By the way, because I think my wife feels pretty committed, in general, committed to me,
but more so to watching Dancing with the Stars this week.
And we got, here's the big life update.
Then we'll do our animal of the week.
I bought a TV antenna for the first time ever in my life, 31st.
one years of living 13 on my own first time i've ever had a tv antenna up until now just been
you know hook up the laptop and uh hdmi style watch whatever when i lived in baltimore when the show
started i didn't even own a tv and i had t i had cable one year when i was an r a you had like a
i don't know if the tv came with a room or if it was someone else's but the cable did and i didn't
have to pay for that or rent or anything so i did a cable that one year but
but that was when I was, what, 19, 20, 20 years old, I guess.
So it's a big step up.
We can watch Primetime Network.
We were able to watch Dancing with the Stars
without trying to come up with a janky stream.
The actual impetus behind getting it was like Vikings Bears play this Sunday at noon.
And we live across a bar, excuse me, we live across the street from a bar
that gets a lot of bears watch, you know, viewing action.
And so if I'm watching a star, and so if I'm watching a bar,
stream, even if it's a really good stream, you know, it's going to be five to ten seconds behind
the like live broadcast. And so I'm sitting there last Sunday watching Red Zone. And this isn't
new. Like this has been this way, you know, the whole time we lived here. But, you know, and I got
the Bears game off to the side and there'll be a big roar from the crowd. And then you just,
you know, you know to like check the screen. It's 10 seconds later. Caleb Williams runs for a 40
or touchdown or whatever. And it doesn't bother me that much when it's just a random Bears game.
but when it's Bears versus Vikings and you know people are going to be amped up for that
I'm just like you know what we have got to stay on top of this so I haven't even really I set it up
two nights ago I haven't even like explored the depths of the crazy you know 37.14 channels that
we get I'm assuming you know outside of your expected networks and the CW and WGN
me TV that's a Chicago thing I think I assume a lot of those point point threes point sevens whatever
I think we're going to be looking at a lot of like Bible channels and some C-SPans hopefully
stay on top of maybe re-engage with local politics or national politics but I'm curious to
see I'll set aside you know 10 20 minutes this weekend I'm not doing much tomorrow
to just kind of explore the cavernous reality that is live over the air
included with an antenna television.
I think it was like $10.
I got to tell you,
in an age where everything is paid to play and subscribe to this,
and you get a little taste for a couple minutes
and then you got to subscribe to keep going,
I have a gripe on that.
I'll mention in a second.
It's nice to be able to just hook something up to the cable outlet,
at the coax and boom, I'm watching Dancing with the Stars.
The reason I mentioned Dancing with the Stars,
my man Guillermo Rodriguez, I think,
is the first ever star on Dancing with the Star
that I've ever met in person.
Rachel and I ran into him at a bar
like three or four years ago before a killer's concert.
And my man is just running the ultimate PR campaign
and using the Kimmel platform, you know,
on his actual shows every night to, you know,
amp up the voters and i am here for it because i feel like in politics we kind of went to shit
where it's like we kind of gave up on platforms and actually being decent people in this case
dance for the stars that would be like actually trying to become a good dancer and improving yourself
and i do think there's a smidgen of uh of giermo that's like gonna bust his ass and try to improve
but i also think giermo's the type of guy he's like almost 60
where it's just kind of like i am who i am at this point i'm uh overweight teddy bear
and America loves me.
And so I'm not going to spend 30 hours a week getting all the steps right.
I'm just going to campaign for your vote.
So it's like every chance he gets, and we were just watching the replay of the second night a few hours ago,
it's like every chance he gets, he is just like amping up the crowd, vote for me, vote for me.
And the dance is just kind of like tertiary.
And I love it.
You know what?
If you want to be like Andy Richter and actually apply yourself and, you know, bust your butt and get better at dancing and be lovable,
I respect that too, but I got to tell you, I love someone like Guillermo who's just like,
F it, vote for me, and I'll make all your dreams come true, Pedro style.
The gripe I had, and then we'll get to our animal of the week, I promise.
Last thing I want to mention.
Thursday night football on Amazon Prime.
It's the first Thursday night football of the season last night because the actual, like, first game or whatever it was,
you know, the Rams 49ers that was broadcast on Netflix.
So it's like, the program is named.
Thursday night football and it happens to run on you know Thursday nights so the first
Thursday night football in quotes of the year last night now I thought and I have to go
back and double check this so I'm using my laptop to stream it because even though we got the
antenna you know it's a it's an Amazon Prime game and our TV out here in the main room is
not a smart TV it's just a monitor basically with a coax now that you know now gets the
Bible channels.
So I go to my Amazon.
I thought I was logging in my father-in-law's account because I was an Amazon prime member for
like a decade.
And eventually now that I'm married into the family and someone else is paying for it,
I think I have contributed my annual share slash offered to.
I don't know exactly what happened with that.
But I'm like, it doesn't make sense.
There's no reason to have multiple prime memberships.
You can ship it wherever you want, multiple payment methods.
There's just like no reason.
that more than one of us is paying for this.
I must have still been logged into my like basic ass Amazon account
when I went to Amazon on my laptop last night to stream this game.
Excuse me.
Because I and I didn't know that this was a thing,
but a good PSA out there and being completely real about this.
You go to the Amazon, you know, homepage, Amazon.com.
Right away, boom at the top, just like there always is,
you know, when I was a prime member.
This game is exclusively for prime subscription paying members, which I had been up until like five months ago.
So right way at the top, there's the banner, Thursday night football, watch live.
No mention of anything, you know, like, hey, you got to pay for this.
You got to log in for this.
Just like watch it.
I'm like, awesome.
I click on it, get the stream going.
You know, we're watching everything's fine.
It's like half time or something.
Two hours later.
I'm like, you know, checking my phone, checking my email, getting ready for bed.
And I get the email from Amazon.
Thank you for your purchase.
And it's like, you know, you're now subscribed to a monthly subscription of Amazon Prime, $20 a month or whatever.
And I'm just like, what the F are you talking about?
It is so scummy slash shady that Amazon is just going through and authorizing purchases on your behalf just because you clicked on like a play now.
I can't for the life of me.
And I know companies are scummy and scammy and stuff like that.
But I can't for the life of me understand how.
it's fine if they want to promote their product,
you know, Thursday Night Football on the homepage of the website,
but you got to give me like a disclaimer,
hey,
if you like actually want to watch this,
it's going to be,
you know,
$14.99, $20, whatever it was.
And you click, okay, like, authorized payment.
There was no like, you know,
hey, choose your payment method.
Is your billing address still right?
It's just like I clicked on this.
And because they had my saved payment,
you know,
information from when I used to use my own Amazon account,
it's just like oh yeah you're uh you're you're you're locked in so i was able to cancel i did get a
refund after i raised hell but i guess and you know what i should really do is just like
one log out of my amazon account um on my computer there's no reason for me to use it but also
i should just like delete my old payment methods but it's such a pita pain in the ass i was shocked
that they just like went through with the charge with no like or sometimes you know a site will
let you watch for 30 minutes or something to, you know, and say like, oh, if you want to continue
watching, like, pay this much. I'm like, that's, you know, fair enough. I don't want to pay. I'm
going to pirate this, but at least you're transparent about your pricing. Amazon, you got to do
better, bro. What is that meme? Our expectations were low, but holy fuck. That's how I felt
last night when I saw that email. We're talking spikes today, which is because my dog has a myriad of
nicknames and one of them that I've been using a little bit more lately is spike and the very quick
TLDR version of like how we got there her name is maple as you know from last season's interview
with the dog segment award winning and one time my wife's grandmother was watching her or just
like referencing her and called her Michael I think you know she's got like a thick Polish accent
and so I call Maple Mike quite a bit it's a great just like one one syllable thing and Mike
crimes with spike and spike is fun to say so that's why we're doing power ranking of top 10 spikes
on the show today and what better animal of the week to represent our top 10 spikes than the
mighty hedgehog these guys and i was torn between a hedgehog and a porcupine so maybe we can
you know throw some flowers to both of them is porcupines being more like on the the aggressive
side of things i think like if they uh i feel like if you frighten a porcupine he'll try to
shoot his spikes at you, whereas a hedgehog just like curls up into a little ball,
maybe more docile, D-O-C-I-L-E.
But my neighbor, Chris growing up, he had a little hedgehog.
I don't know how long these guys live for.
Let's take our guesses.
Like a hedgehog, you know, living in cushy, you know, whatever, what's the opposite of captivity?
The wild.
Captivity sounds so bad, but that's like what a zoo is, right?
Like you live in captivity and you're going to have a longer lifespan than, you know,
in the wild.
Like where the heck do wild hedgehogs live?
I think a hedgehog more than almost any other animal, definitely like woodland forest, right?
But more than almost any other animal, maybe like a dog, I guess, but there's wild dogs too.
When I think of like an animal that could not possibly be wild and is like solely a domesticated sort of thing, that's what I think of with a hedgehog.
So hedgehog lifespan, that's the first thing.
wanted to look up.
Hedgehog.
It's kind of a fun name, too.
It's like they're a hog,
probably because of the little nose thing,
but they live in hedges.
I don't know.
Are hedgehogs more inclined to inhabit hedges?
Or is it just kind of a thing we associated with them?
You know what movie should have had a hedgehog?
That movie over the hedge.
But I think it's what, just like the turtle?
Bruce Willis plays the raccoon.
There's a bear.
There's some possums, Avrilavine.
And I don't know what other woodland creatures they got in there,
but I don't remember seeing a hedgehog.
Hedgehogs per AI live between three and six years on average.
Well, wild hedgehogs typically live only two to four years.
So let's read a little bit more.
Let's peruse a little bit, but then we get to our power rankings.
A hedgehog is a spiny mammal.
17 species of hedgehog.
That's pretty cool.
Found throughout parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa and New Zealand by introduction.
There are no hedgehogs native to Australia and no living species native to the Americas.
But there used to be a genus that was once present in North America,
but we hunted them all down, apparently.
I don't know.
These guys are so cute.
They go up in little balls.
They're like shrews, but spiky.
Just, you know, a cute little guy.
There's not much more I, like, want to explore or say about hedgehogs.
They're just cool little guys.
The Wikipedia article is suggesting I read about echidnas next.
That's kind of like the Australian.
Like for every, like, cool, cute, like normal, quote-looking animal in the world,
there's like an Australian cousin who's, like, kind of funky and probably has like a pouch.
That's the echidna.
that's your animal of the week.
We will come back to hedgehogs for a trivia question in a few moments here.
But I do want to say thank you quickly to our sponsors.
HomePriot, Oregon.

some trimming. He won't do that, but he might comment on it because he's meticulous about his
landscaping. Not really, but he likes a nice looking lawn, and who wouldn't? That's the kind of
friendliness and approachability you get from going with the experts at home, pride organ, inspection,
perfection. Also, of course, our good friends at the Samson Q2U series delivering crisp, clear
audio technology, handheld microphones, what are they called,
Lavaliers, L-A-V-A-L-I-E-Rs.
Sounds like a Pokemon, doesn't it?
Like a fourth-gen fire rock Pokemon, Lavalier.
This is like a cavalier, which I kind of think as like a horse.
I don't think a cavalier is really a horse at all, is it?
It's more of like someone who kind of goes rogue like a maverick and they have a big sword.
That's what I think of as a cavalier.
But that's the Samson Q2 series
And God speaks he uses as Samson
Surely our good friends at
Cuts by Q are along for the ride on today's episode
Yes, checking my notes, they are
When you need to fresh do something snappier

Bean Town Sportsbook, bet like a better, better.
That's got to be up there.
We're about 450 episodes in for the most half-assed ad read I've ever had.
No copy in front of me, just me and the open road still thinking about hedgehogs.
And a sip in October Fest.
I gotta tell you, this October Fest from half acre,
it's not the greatest October Fest.
It doesn't have a lot of action or flavor to it.
It just feels like I'm drinking a really kind of basic logger
with just a hint of like Octoberfest, you know, pizzazz to it.
It's not like a bad beer.
Like, I love a good logger.
Excuse me.
But it left me pining for more.
The name of the beer itself is Lake Lager.
Kind of reminds me that,
town and the Hobbit. What is it? Lake Town
that Smawug destroys.
What was the whole deal? What was Smauwug's problem?
I mean, if I'm following
the events correctly here,
he's a dragon.
He lives in a mountain, the Misty Mountain. He sleeps on
treasure. Fair enough.
And then these 12 dwarves show up with
Bilbo Baggins, and they're trying to steal the
Arkinstone because it belongs
to the dwarves. They're trying to take it back.
fair play they wake up smawug he's mad and instead of you know eating these dwarfs he's just like
psych i'm out of here he flies out of the missy mountain destroys this lake town and then what ends up
does they kill smog one of those like the mayor of lake town or something kills him i think
shoots him in the eye or something and he's dead why that he could have been just fine if he
I mean, he could have just not destroyed Lake Town and he probably would have lived.
So I don't know.
We think there's an opportunity for a tie-in between Smawu and House of the Dragons.
A disappointing movie series ties into a disappointing TV series.
I think there's opportunity there.
I don't know.
Our power ranking this week, top 10 spikes.
And I'll be transparent with you.
I made the list of spikes like I just listed.
them out as they came to my head when I was in my walk earlier with the dog.
And now I'm opening up my notes here and I'm realizing I neglected to power rank them.
So we just got 10 loosely organized spikes.
And we're just going to rank them on the fly here.
So coming in at number 10, spike drink.
It's never a good thing.
Like, no one wants a spike drink.
I feel like if your drink's getting spiked, what's the peanut gallery saying?
This show is crazy?
That's why it's number, that's why spike drink is number 10 and not number two, okay?
Where do these, you know, you see it all the time.
It happens.
It's a real thing, obviously, but you see it in a lot of like teen movies or TV shows like,
oh, they're spiking the drink to try to like, you know, sexually assault the girl, whatever.
Where are all these people getting the spiking materials?
No one's ever asked me, hey, you want a little,
bit of this vial so you can spike someone's drink i would be like i don't know do i mix up a bunch of
tylonol what do i do i like how do i make a drink spike do i have to ground up some
mulberries or something where are people getting these connects i have never bought any sort of
illegal drug like i mean in any capacity but you know i've i bought uh what are they called not
herbicides.
Edibles, you know, probably a handful of eight to ten times in my life over, you know,
the last 12 years, however long it's been legal.
Only at, you know, dispensaries, show your ID, pay with your debit card, all very over-the-table
kind of stuff.
I wouldn't know if you were just like, hey, like, do, like, you know, it doesn't even
have to be a crazy drug, just like maybe go, like, get some cocaine or something.
Like, I wouldn't know where to start.
my wife had one like tertiary connection who i think sold drugs at a certain you know point in time
so that would have been a good like a decade like five years ago but i think he's on the on the lamb
on the mint on the lamb is bad on the mend is good he's on the mend he's not involved with that stuff
anymore which is good for him good for society but i'm just like if you were just like you know what
go out on the street you got 24 hours to buy something i would
would have no idea. I wouldn't know what to do. Spiked or otherwise. And that's probably a good
thing that I'm like 20 degrees removed from all that stuff. But everything okay over there with
Maple? No? She's being a bloodhound with her nose right now. Hey Spike, come over. Come here. Come
enjoy the show. Spike, do you have seasonal allergies like dad? Probably. Why don't you go sit in your
spot? Okay. That's still not your spot, but that's better. Thank you, buddy. That's number 10,
spiked. Okay, now it really good stuff. I feel like a spiked drink was the only one that was like
really bad. Now we're trying to figure out like what, what should we put at number nine?
Maybe we'll put because I always hated this when I was playing high school baseball,
my albeit short career, metal spikes.
And that is basically, you know,
you're a track athlete or a baseball player.
You know, when I was in Little League,
you know, before you get to high school,
it's like you're not allowed to have metal spikes in your shoes,
which makes sense.
And then you get to high school and it's like,
I'm still playing with the plastic cleats,
the plastic spikes, like you're in soccer or something.
And all of a sudden, you know,
everyone's running around with their metal spikes
and you're getting cleated, trying to steal second base and stuff, your hand gets stepped on.
Just, I think I was really good at baseball, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, but there were some elements that I just never felt comfortable with.
I could never get my slide down.
I was tearing up the bottom of my thigh every single time I slid.
And when I got to high school and started getting cleated, I was just like, this is not fun at all.
So I'm not personally a huge fan of metal spikes.
That's why they're coming in at number nine on my list.
Let's see here.
Coming in at number eight, this is a local Chicago thing, I believe, Spike Ball.
So it's a sport.
I think it went on Shark Tank, if I remember correctly.
And the founder's name is like Chris something,
but the only thing I wanted to say about Spike Ball.
This was like, I think it was during the pandemic,
is around when the Spike Ball founder went on Shark Tank.
Or maybe it was earlier than that.
This is like a lawn game, by the way, or something you play in the beach where you have like this trampoline looking thing.
You spike the ball down onto it and people have to like almost like four square.
But I've, you know, I played during COVID.
I played a lot of virtual trivia.
This one guy in particular out of Baltimore because I was still playing with my old co-workers at that point.
You know, like a year after I moved.
And he would like throw crazy hard questions into the trivia games to like try to weed out cheaters.
people who are like stupid enough to get the answer right for something like there's no way you
could know it but one of the questions was what's the name of the founder of spike ball
which to me is like you know obviously a really insanely hard question i'm not going to know
the name of the creator of most things but i think you know this guy's from chicago and i had
just seen it on shark tank or something like that or and this so he didn't invent it but he found
the company Spikeball in 2007 and the guy's name was Chris Ruder, which I don't remember what it was
now. But at the time, I got the trivia question right. And I don't think it was ever like a formal
like, hey, you guys, just so you know like you're cheating by the way, because we got it right.
He just made a comment on it. And I think we kept the points out and all. But at the time,
I remember that guy's name because I just seen the Shark Tank episode, I believe. And so I flew too
close to the sun. I was too smart. But I've since forgotten his name and had to look it up. Chris
Ruter. I think I've played spike ball like once or twice. I don't know, five, six years ago,
something like that. But apparently it's been around for 19 years now. So there we go. Number seven,
something that you're not going to want to have happen to your car, but you got to watch out for it.
I don't know. I didn't look it up to see like if there's a proper name for this. I guess road spikes is
what you'd call it. But I'm thinking specifically, I'm not talking like police chase, you know, set up
trap. I'm thinking specifically the instance when you go to return your car at the airport
rental car facility. And, you know, you got the different signs. Alamo turn here. Hurt's there.
Excuse me, national here. And it's always, I don't know about you guys. And I've never had a
moment where I like went the wrong way and had spike tire damage. But every time I like start
to inch over those spikes go in the correct way, I always like hold my breath a little bit.
where I'm like, man, if, you know, what do they say, severe tire damage if you go the wrong way,
it's like I really would prefer not to get severe tire damage on my rental car return here.
I'm so close to being free of this liability.
I think that's the worst thing.
It's like, you know, if I'm driving through the spikes at the beginning, which I guess you might do when you leave the facility too,
but it's like, you know, and I just got this thing, whatever.
But when you're returning it, it's like, in some case, you put on 1,000 miles on your
car without a ding, a scratch, whatever, and you're like, I'm so close to ridding myself of this
albatross around my neck. I just have to avoid the severe tire damage by going the wrong way
through the rental car spikes. So I don't know if there's a different or a better name for those
than just road spikes, but that's coming in at number seven for me. I got to look this up,
number six to confirm that it's correct.
But I'm fairly certain, and Google confirms it.
Coming in at number six is Spike from Land Before Time.
That's right.
A dinosaur has made the list.
So Land Before Time, it was a movie in like the 90s,
and then they made a whole bunch of VHS direct-to-VHS spinoffs.
And I think we had like the first six on VHS growing up.
as a kid or maybe that's not true i think i'd just seen all of them i think we had like
three and five or something that we owned and the rest you just get from the library
but if you don't recall or maybe you're a little bit too old or too young for this you miss the
sweet spot you got this rag tag group of adolescent dinosaurs who are friends with each other
starring little foot he's like a stegosaurus looking guy not stegosaurus uh sorry that's what spike is
Littlefoot is like a Brontosaurus kind of guy.
Spike is a stegosaurus, I can confirm.
He's green.
And according to land beforetime.fandem.com, he has violet eyes.
Although I got to tell you this, I'm looking right at his picture,
and he's got brown eyes, maybe hazelnut, but certainly brown, chestnut even.
As you scroll down, Spikes like Wikipedia or Land Before Time,
Fandem.com article.
The next thing under character,
his status, alive.
Alignment, good.
Favorite food, most types of land plant.
Family, mama swimmer,
Ducky, adoptive sister.
Rip, wasn't she, the voice actress
was when he got murdered by the father.
And then adoptive siblings, their names.
Ducky and Spike siblings.
This is really good stuff.
Titles, gentle giant Spike.
And there's more.
Quote from the movie,
Ducky,
this is from Ducky
as Ducky gives
a newly hatched Spike
his name
in the land before time.
Quote,
you are a Spike tale,
so we will call you Spike.
And that's the last thing
she said before she died.
The voice actress,
not Ducky.
Makes she rest in peace.
But yeah,
you got Ducky who's like
this tiny little dinosaur,
Spike,
Littlefoot,
I think in a few of the videos
Littlefoot has a girlfriend
who looks like him.
Petrie,
right?
the flying paradactal kind of guy.
And in select episodes, chomper, the baby sharp tooth.
What a classic character, chomper.
That's number six.
Spike.
Number five.
Let's do Spike Jones.
I know the Jones, the film buffs out there are going to be barking saying he should be higher.
But the reason he's not higher is because he doesn't spell his name the way you're supposed to.
J-O-N-Z-E.
Who the heck?
What is that Dutch?
I don't think I've ever seen anyone else with the name Spike Jones.
He did that movie Her with Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson.
He did a couple, like at least one music video for Arcade Fire.
What else did he do?
A lot of skateboarding videos, music videos.
being John Malkovich adaptation where the wild things are which I never saw executive producer
and co-creator of Jackass and I don't know what else he's done it's done some acting as well
feels like there was a time in like the mid to late 2000s into early odds where he was thrown
like heaters with his films he directed and then yeah well that's the thing so he had
Malkovich adaptation and then where the wild things are, you know, seven years later and then her.
From 2013, that was the last movie he ever directed.
He's still alive, but I don't know what exactly he's been up to lately because that was 13 years ago.
Let's see if Wikipedia has anything else to say about Spike Jones.
He's kind of like a child prodigy.
And now he's like in his 50s and I don't really know what he's up to as much these days.
directed Frank Ocean's Festival Tour.
He's done some like theater stuff, a documentary.
His most recent project with Brad Pitt and Joaquin Phoenix was scrapped two years ago.
So he's just kind of staying in the shadows.
Good for you, Spike.
Number four, I'm going to put Spike the TV channel.
Here's our listener engagement email question of the week.
Does anyone have any clue what TV shows just generally across the board are on Spike or have been on Spike?
It is the pure embodiment of you're in the hotel, you're scrolling through the TV guide,
you get around to like the USA, TNT, TBS area.
And then there's also Spike and you're just like, I, no idea.
Couldn't name a single.
I mean, we're going to Google it to.
inform ourselves, but I have no clue. I don't even know how it got this high in the power rankings.
How did Spike TV get to four? Okay, apparently Spike TV is now Paramount Network, which is not
exciting. Boring. Everyone knows about Paramount. Why can't we, where do it spike go? So you're telling me
I can't go to a hotel. You're telling me my TV with my
Rabbit ears that I just bought is not going to get Spike TV.
Not that it would get Paramount TV, but that's really boring.
I like Spike.
You know what?
I'm not even going to...
What was Dwight D. Eisenhower's campaign slogan?
I like Spike.
I'm not even going to entertain it by being like...
Oh, here's what was on Spike.
I just want to go look at the logo, old logo for the Spike TV channel, just for nostalgia's sake.
Yeah.
I mean, I'm looking at it right now.
I'm like, I've never seen this before in my life.
So I don't even know how I remember that Spike was the name of a TV channel.
But here's a Reddit thread from seven years ago.
Whatever happened to Spike TV.
Apparently, Bar Rescue, I've seen one episode of that.
They did an episode of Bar Rescue at this bar, like across the street from Wrigley Field back in the day by a red line stop.
And that's the only episode of Bar Rescue I've ever seen.
This person, Jamie's fantasy on Reddit, says, Spike,
TV was seen as a guy's channel and they wanted
to rebrand it.
Inkmaster Bar Rescue.
That's when they added Yellowstone.
So, boring.
All right.
Coming in at number three,
not Nick Cannon, this is Spike Cannon,
and it's a Pokemon move.
That's right.
There's a Wikipedia, or a Reddit thread on it,
and it's just titled Spike Cannon,
the Gen 1 Pokemon move, Lost to the Sands of Time.
someone sounds very poetic and nostalgic when thinking about Spike Cannon, the Pokemon move.
So this is a TM, meaning like most moves in Pokemon are TMs.
You can teach your Pokemon them or they can learn it.
The opposite being HMs, but neither here nor there.
Spike Cannon, at least as it stands currently, it's a physical move.
15 power points.
That's mean how many you can use before you have to reload.
20 power, 100% accuracy.
which is not a lot of power,
but is this one of those like repeat five moves?
Like it can repeat two to five times.
Yeah, hits two to five times,
has a three-eighth's chance to hit three or more,
two or more times.
Don't they always hit two or more times?
I thought with these moves,
it was always like you always hit twice,
like Fury Cannon.
Now that's not what it's called Fury Attack.
But apparently it's a three-eighths chance of hitting.
Oh, it's three-eighths chance of hitting two or three-three-eighths chance
of hitting two or three times. There you go. And a one-eighth chance of hitting four to five times.
So yeah, the only Pokemon in Gen 1 that can use it, Cloister, Omanite, and Oma Star. If you don't
know Cloister is the Pokemon that looks like an underwater vagina. And Omanite and Oma-Star
are in the same evolutionary line, the two Pokemon. And they evolve from a fossil. In the original
Gen 1, you hit a point early in the game where there's two fossils and you can only take one
and the other fossil is lost to the sands of time like Spike Cannon per Reddit
and you can't obtain that Pokemon in that safe file.
And this is true in many other instances,
but in Gen 1 Pokemon, you couldn't just play through the game
and say, I'm going to catch all 151 Pokemon.
You got to have other games or friends.
I've never done that myself.
I think my brother did it.
The neighbor of the Hedgehog was a big Pokemon player.
But I never accomplished that feat myself of catching all the
Pokemon. I've got to catch them all, not me. And I don't even know if you've ever used Spike Cannon,
but it's fun to say, even though it looks like it's a pretty terrible move.
That brings us to number two. I originally wrote it as Railroad Spike, but we're going to
amend it to say Golden Spike slash Railroad Spike. Obviously, Golden Spike, badass moment where
they connected the train from the east to the train to the west and the U.S.
And, of course, they meet halfway, so they're in Utah.
That always bugged me.
It's like those guys working from the East Coast over the years put in a hell of a lot more blood, sweat and tears.
Those guys from the left were like, oh, shoot, we're supposed to be there in two months.
Let's start building a railroad.
Meanwhile, the guys from the East Coast been doing it for Central.
Don't give me any of this bullshit.
They met in Utah.
Come on.
That's like two states away from the ocean.
So I'm not buying any of this.
Meat in the middle crap.
We had the last thing I was saying in this
in what we were real number one,
then finish up with their trivia question.
We had one year, my last year,
I've rubbed detasseling.
This is like, it's like one of my first experiences
as like a team leader
who actually like did something
that I think was kind of cool.
So I was my last year detassing, I was in charge of my own bus crew.
So you got like these 12 to 15 year olds rag tag, you know,
that's harsh working environments.
So we worked down in these fields, you know, every day for four weeks straight.
And I think on like the second or third day working in the cornfield,
they found a railroad spike.
And I decided to make it a tradition where at the end of the day you get back on the bus
and, you know, you always do like a quick little speech,
just like, you know, 30 seconds recap of like how the day went and like what the plan.
plan is for tomorrow how many hours to expect that sort of thing and so i decided to incorporate the i don't
know what i called it but like you know you give out basically like the MVP for that day give them a
spike they get to hang on to it probably just leave it on the bus but hang on to it and then next day
you award the spike to someone else reminds me of in that uh cbs kid nation show ran for one
ill-fated season occasionally those kids would get the gold stars and they were worth like 10,000
bucks or something that's basically what we did with the spike so shout out of
out any of my old Rochelle crew de Tasselingmates found this program 20 years later.
Maybe you got the spike and that inspired you to cure cancer.
That would be a cool story, huh?
Inspiring.
Brings us to number one.
I just decided he should be number one because, you know, he feels like he's earned it.
It's Spike Lee.
I haven't actually like seen a ton of Spike Lee's filmography.
do the right thing I watched in college.
I probably was not allowed to watch it before that.
Certainly not of these Hollywood-themed homeschool dances.
And then, what was it, Black Klansman?
Was that a Spike Lee joint?
And there's probably others, too, that I've perused and dabbled in,
but I don't think I can recall sitting down and just being like,
oh, yeah, let me watch this Spike Lee joint.
But he's iconic.
He's at the Knicks games.
He's beloved.
He's just this tiny little guy, but he's been around for a long time.
He's a titan of industry.
What else could you say about Spike Lee?
Other than, I guess, let's do a quick Google search.
You guys think that's his real name.
I have never looked this up or have any knowledge of this.
Spike Lee.
I'm going to guess no.
He feels like someone who is from, like, you know, kind of like a Jay-Z.
He's from, like, Harlem or something.
I don't know if Jay-Z is from Harlem, I'm just guessing.
And it's like he's like, you know, Eldridge.
Thomas the 4th or something
and he just went for Spike Lee because it's
a zip year. So get your
guesses in. Let's see.
I think I said earlier
I was going to have like a
Bean Town podcast poll like listener
poll question response.
Oh, that was about Spike, the TV
channel if you've ever seen it or watched anything.
So yeah, don't forget to get that in Beantown.
You need a podcast at Yahoo.com.
You know what? I'll say this about Spike Lee's
real name. It's like half and half. His last name
was Lee, or is
Lee rather, but his first name is Shelton.
So Shelton Lee, aka Spike Lee.
And a quick perusal.
It's been married to the same ladies since
1993. Good for you, Spike.
Do the right thing.
Let's see anything else from like, oh yeah,
I actually have seen this. I've never seen Malcolm X
one of these days. I should watch it.
And I know Black Klansman is a much more recent thing.
but jungle fever never seen i never saw that shirac movie he did so yeah for the most part i actually
feel like i haven't seen most of his movies but um maybe something to invest more in in the future
he directed the david burn concert film american utopia from a couple years ago so there you go from
ten to one number ten spiked drink number nine metal spikes eight spike ball seven rental car
return spikes six spike from land before time five spike jones or johns four spike the tv channel three
spike cannon the tm two railroad spike slash golden spike and number one spike lee there's your top
ten spikes and without further ado finishing with our trivia question of the week i told you we
be back with the hedgehogs here is my question in what year was the original sonic the hedgehog video game
released on Sega Genesis.
Name that year.
Give it your best guess.
I got no bonus clues or bonus questions or anything for you.
Just give it a good shot.
We'll give it another 10 seconds or so.
A lot of fun here in the Beantown podcast.
Thank you for listening and supporting our program, as always.
The answer in what year was the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game released for Sega Genesis?
Ninety-one.
Nice little palindromic number.
tip of the cap to Bean Town Podcast season 7 where we did our palindrome of the day.
That's what I got for you guys.
I appreciate you listening.
I appreciate you tuning into my program.
Quinn David Furness presents the Beantown podcast.
You know we'll be back with you next week.
We're always back with you next week.
Stay safe.
Stay sane.
See you soon.
Bye bye.
