Starting point is 00:00:07 Hey, what's going on? Welcome to my show. Quinn David Furness presents the Beantown podcast for Friday. September 4th, 2026. What's going on? What's happening? How are you? My name is Quinn, and this is my program. Quinn David Furnace presents the Beantown podcast. We are coming to you live on a Friday afternoon leading into Labor Day weekend. And I got to tell you, it's, you know, this is one of the more, I think, underrated. like joyous days of the year at least for me in terms of just you know Friday going into a holiday weekend always a good time right labor day is exciting I love the fall I love football getting into October fest crisp weather my what's the phrase when you know don't yuck my yum my yumb has been thoroughly yucked this week and going into this weekend by this awful heat we have going on here in Chicago, 93 degrees currently. It was originally, you know, last weekend, you'll come at you live last weekend and look at the radar, the forecast, and it's going to be like mid-90s, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Starting point is 00:01:28 and there's going to be some rain rolling in Thursday, and by Friday it's going to be back to like cloudy and 82 and into the weekend. all kind of back to normal. And here we are, five, six days later, like idiots. It's 93 at 5 p.m. here on Friday, and it is absolutely miserable. On top of that, there's mosquitoes,
Starting point is 00:01:53 there's flies, which we'll talk about in a second here. And it is just, my yum has been thoroughly yucked. I, a once-cherished holiday weekend that I love, I'm still going to love it. but it's like, and I don't need it to be 50 degrees on labor or weekend, right? It's the start of fall. But it doesn't feel like the unofficial end of summer when it's 93, sunny and like 80% humidity outside. Maybe that's just me.
Starting point is 00:02:24 Hot take, pun intended. So I don't know. It just, you know, some people, it's like, it just doesn't feel like Christmas this year ever since dad, you know, left. And this year, I'm like, well, it doesn't feel like freaking, like, Labor Day anymore ever since the weather got into the mid-90s. I am the creator, the host, and the chief meteorologist of this program. I always loved when I was a kid, you know, they had the different network local TV stations. And I think, what was it, WREX, or maybe it was, that was the NBC affiliate. He might have worked for both NBC and the ABC affiliate or Fox or
Starting point is 00:03:05 something like that. I don't remember. But our chief media. meteorologist was Eric Sorensen, who if you're not from Rockford, you might still know because he's actually in the House of Representatives now, the U.S. House. He represents like the northwest part of the state of Illinois. But it was always that title chief meteorologist, you know, makes you think, oh, maybe they got like three guys working behind the scenes there in the meteorology department at WREX-13 Rockford. And I'm not a... local TV expert, but I think these operations tend to be pretty shoe string, if we will. And so despite being chief meteorologist, I'm doubtful that there is an assistant meteorologist,
Starting point is 00:03:51 associate meteorologist, director of meteorology, and meteorology assistant in there. I'm guessing it's just a one-man department. And that's the beauty of meteorology, right? You can be a one-man department, and you can call yourself whatever you like. there is no formal licensure or degree to calling yourself a meteorologist, which is the great thing about the United States of America. Anyone can be who they want to be. Any random black guy or white guy or Asian guy or whomever can pretend to be a 49ers wide receiver. You guys see this story?
Starting point is 00:04:31 I don't remember the guy's name. but he we should google this to get better facts but he had been pretending for like the last couple months or maybe even years i don't know by the way we're drinking a bell's two-hearted ale a leftover straggler for my grandfather's funeral a few months ago drinking it on live on the air it's what grandpa dave would have wanted but this guy has been impersonating and he's caught now but impersonating a wide receiver for the 49ers. And he's like working out on the beach and stuff in Los Angeles or San Francisco or wherever. And telling people, oh, yeah, I play for the 49ers.
Starting point is 00:05:19 And he's like going on TikTok live and stuff and talking about his career with the Niners. Here we go. I don't want to ever trust AI 100%. but this is what we're seeing. Did we say listener discretion advised? I think we did, but I just had like a total blackout moment from the last 60 seconds. If not, listener discretion, maybe a second time is advised. Number one, occasionally some language.
Starting point is 00:05:42 Number two, this podcast is objectively terrible. So this is from AI, but I think it seems like a good summary from a quick glance. Dejan Love, D-A-E-J-O-N, 35-year-old man arrested by the FBI for allegedly posing as a San Francisco 49, and an elaborate 1.3 million romance and investment scam. Holy cow. So he's been posing as a wealthy 49ers player and Swiss real estate investor on dating apps and social media. There's an 18-year-old accomplice. Taylor Jamie Chan posing as a financial advisor during three-way calls with victims.
Starting point is 00:06:25 So here's the crime, the fraud. The pair allegedly conned at least 26 women. across California, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington out of roughly 1.3 million by pitching fake high-return investments. So this guy is basically pretending to be an NFL wide receiver. None of these victims thought to Google his name to be like, oh yeah, he doesn't have a Wikipedia article. I wonder what's up with that.
Starting point is 00:06:52 And somehow he's conning them. They got him. The FBI got him in the Boise Airport. August 24th, so two weeks ago, facing federal wire fraud and conspiracy charges. I want to read a little bit more about, like, what this actual, like, fraud is. Like, what was the scheme? Let's go to TMZ. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Defrauding 26 women, 1.3 million. We already knew about that. So instead of actually like using the money for, you know, capital fundraising, whatever, he just pocketed the money. 1.3 million. That's pretty nice. This article didn't have as much, it wasn't as juicy as I wanted to be. I thought TMC they were going to have a scoop, but it kind of went off in a different direction. They began, Love and Chan began their scheme in February 22 with Love meeting multiple women through dating apps, created fictitious personas. the wide receiver and the wealthy real estate investor use a bunch of synonyms john love
Starting point is 00:08:01 avril lytle love and jordan love not that one but the other one so i don't want to tell anyone how to yuck someone else's yom or con someone but using your actual last name with just different variations of a first name as your different scam artist personas doesn't seem like the best move like i don't think uh frank abagnanel Jr. was like, okay, I'm going to pretend to be a pilot and my name is Don Abagnale Jr. And then I'll be a chef and I will be Justin Abagnale Jr. I've never actually even read or seen Catch Me if you can. I've just, you know, seen a couple clips of it. And I know the general outline and story. But I think Frank, I mean, I'm not trying to say Frank was, I was stupid. I mean,
Starting point is 00:08:51 he was really good. He barely even got caught. Eventually he got caught doing something. I don't remember what he did to get caught, but he did a lot of stuff. Catch me if you can. This week's Popcorn Classic of the Week. These efforts spanned more than four years with Love and Chan, creating fictitious investments to defraud women. We've already talked a little bit about that. Yeah, so they were just, I don't know, like, what these women thought they were donating
Starting point is 00:09:18 money to. Love advertised non-existent investment vehicles and claimed these investments would generate massive returns for both him and his victims. The statement also said Love used apps to create fake bank and investment accounts and balances, which he would show to victims to legitimize the scheme. They have a lot that they exchanged through text, so paper trail is not good. Anyways, we'll leave it there. That's kind of the gist of the story.
Starting point is 00:09:47 But just some really great A terrible conning. I mean, using names that are variations of your real name with the same last name, and paper trails and I just feel I mean if to me there's like two to almost disparate things going on here that's right disparate D-A-S-P-A-R-A-T-E and obviously they're one in the same with this Dijon love character but it's one thing to like have excuse me fake personas and try to scam people out of money and do it on dating apps whatever like and you guys get caught. It's a terrible thing. I got it. I think we were all on the same page there.
Starting point is 00:10:30 Why is this guy pretending to be a 49ers wide receiver and like posting TikToks about it and like drawing attention to himself? Like what's the what's the end goal there? Like wouldn't you want to pose to be something that is like non online searchable? Because it turns out being a NFL wide receiver is a pretty like easy to find out easy easily discoverable high profile uh just job in general so uh dejan i don't know what you're doing bro but don't try to scam me because i had a certain mr rock chris email me about eight years ago trying to get me to wire him some money and we turned the tables on him and never heard from him again right before i was going to get his money i was so close We read that live on air.
Starting point is 00:11:29 If you're new to the Bean Town podcast, maybe this is instead of episode 450 or whatever for you, maybe this is episode two. So you don't know the whole lore or backstory. That's okay. I do briefly, before we get to our animal of the week, just want to give a quick shout out, of course, to our good friends in Pakistan. Thank you for basically 178th, or rather 78th ranked comedy podcasts in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. And, of course, our good friends in Nigeria. You know, the third, I think second or third largest city in Nigeria is Benin City, and I actually read a transcript this past week from someone who had gone.
Starting point is 00:12:05 I think it was to the University of Benin or University of Benin City in Nigeria. So, you know, I'm starting to kind of see those personal connections pay off, not only in my personal life through wonderful top 178 podcast rankings, but now our show is apparently making its way into academia in West Africa. And people are flocking to be part of professional organizations that I represent. So that's really exciting, really good stuff. Keep those applications from Benin City coming. And we'll be seeing you real soon.
Starting point is 00:12:45 We'll be seeing you. It doesn't really work as well as I thought it was going to when I started saying it. But you get the gist. I think that's the second time we've said gist today, G-I-S-T. What do you think that is, Dutch? That's the etymology on gist. It's got to be like Dutch or German. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:13:05 We'll look it up. We don't look up everything on the show because we got a tight timeline to fit here, tight window of recording opportunity. Gist, word, origin. Anglo-French, legal phrase, Cest, action, gist. I know that's probably not how you say it,
Starting point is 00:13:24 but say action gist, C-E-S-T, action gist. which means this action lies or is legally grounded. What did I say? Dutch or German, Anglo-French, boring. I thought it was going to be something cooler than that. Our Animal of the Week, we mentioned on top of the heat and the humidity, we've got some other issues going on here stemming from the, or born out of the animal kingdom.
Starting point is 00:13:49 That is a horsefly outbreak here in Chicago. That's right. Our Animal of the Week is the Horsefly. and they are tiny little bastards. These things, I think there's something they're like attracted to your carbon dioxide. I mean, we had one in the house the other night and was going to town on both my wife and my dog. And I haven't gone it too bad today, but I've only been out twice. But yesterday morning, I'm out on my run, you know, going early in the morning to try to beat the heat as much as possible.
Starting point is 00:14:29 and I'm just running through the park. And it's like every 10, 20 seconds, I look down at my shoulder and I'm running shirtless or feel it on my back or down on my knee or something. And there's another freaking horsefly. These things, I don't know if it's like they've already bit you and their fangs are like stuck in you and that's how they're so sticky or if they got some of that stick them on their hands
Starting point is 00:14:55 that guys like Kenan McCardell and Peerless Price used to wear back around the turn of the century. But these things are sticky as hell, and unlike a common housefly or a gnat or something, unless you really jack them up and make contact when you try to swat them, if you don't get hand on fly,
Starting point is 00:15:19 they're not moving. They're not leaving. They've made a commitment to bite you where they've landed, and they're going down with a ship. Per Wikipedia, horse flies, And it hurts like, I wouldn't go so far as to say, oh, it hurts like hell. That's, I mean, you get like a cramp or something or two by four to the back of the neck.
Starting point is 00:15:42 That kind of hurts like hell. This is a step below that, but it's really irritating. It's not just like a mosquito bite where you don't really feel it and then you get itchy later. And it's just kind of a nuisance. This is like an actual pain. I think like a horsefly bite. When I was a kid, I didn't like the, like, and I still don't, but like getting a shot. know, the doctor or something.
Starting point is 00:16:03 It's not fun, but at least for me, I don't remember the last time I had a shot of the doctor. I'm like, oh, my gosh, that actually really hurt bad. I've had it with, like, COVID and flu vaccines where I feel really sick when, like, the, like, point of entry gets really sore and bruised later, but the actual shot itself is, like, usually doesn't hurt so bad. I guess maybe I had one or one or two COVID boosters. I was like, yeah, that kind of hurt. But most of the time, I feel like you get a little needle and it's like, oh, it's not that
Starting point is 00:16:30 big of a deal these days for me at least i did not feel that way when i was a kid so i'll take a i'll take a little needle over a horsefly bite horse flies and deer flies are true flies that's good there's no explanation at wikipedia for what a true fly is but i'm glad that they are true flies in the family tabbin today in the insect order diptera the adults are often large and agile in flight females parasitize there's a good word, land vertebrates, including humans biting them to obtain blood. They prefer to fly in sunlight, avoiding dark and shady areas and are inactive at night, which is really frustrating because I was running the other morning and it was still dark. And, I mean, it wasn't like pitch black, but it was like, you know, sun wasn't fully out yet.
Starting point is 00:17:17 And that didn't stop them, so they must have been hungry. Contrary to popular belief, they cannot see infrared light or otherwise detect heat at a distance, but that doesn't say anything about carbon dioxide. they're attracted. Males have weak mouth parts, but females have mouth parts strong enough to puncture the skin of large animals. This is for the purpose of obtaining enough protein from blood to produce eggs. That's nice. The mouth parts of females are often formed into a stout, stabbing organ with two pairs of sharp cutting blades and a sponge-like part to lap up the blood that flows from the wound. That's all really nice. I don't even want to talk about this anymore. It's
Starting point is 00:18:00 It's just so unpleasant and I know they're just outside waiting to munch and chomp and it's painful. I don't care for it, frankly. Only other thing that reminds me, have you guys ever seen that movie The Fly with Jeff Goldblum? Because I haven't. I legitimately am like aware of it. And I think that's probably still like a maybe not for like the super young audience these days. But I think for people my generation and older, you hear. Jeff Goldblum and that's probably what like a top two or three movie that comes to mind
Starting point is 00:18:34 it's probably like Jurassic Park the fly I don't know I feel like as time passes he's probably going to be even better remembered for like Wizard of Oz almost or not Wizard of Oz but wicked playing the Wizard of Oz but no I never seen the fly Jeff Goldblum turns into a fly is that what happens in the movie it's like a science fiction movie why does he turn into a fly is he a mad scientist does he want to turn into a fly or does it happen by accident is he the protagonist is he a bad guy let's see 1986 film david kronenberg starring jeff goblum jeanie davis and john gets i don't know who john gets is apparently he's in the social network let's keep this going here uh let's see loosely based on a short story of the same name and a remake of the 1958 film of the same name tells him an eccentric
Starting point is 00:19:30 scientist who after one of his experiments goes wrong slowly turns into a fly hybrid creature okay i feel like it's one of those uh movies where i'm like i might watch it eventually so i don't just want to like read through the uh the plot line here like i'm open to watching this movie looks like it has 83% on rotten tomatoes which is pretty strong uh it says the remixer passed the original commercial success So seems pretty positive. I don't know. I guess our call to action of the week here,
Starting point is 00:20:07 if you've seen the fly, how many bags of popcorn would you give it out of five? And would you consider it to be a popcorn classic? If you can answer those two questions, email us, Beantown Podcast at yahoo.com. Again, that's Beentown and Podcast at yahoo.com. Excuse me. Something else I wanted to mention here.
Starting point is 00:20:29 I don't really have like a hot take on it, but in case he missed it, the Clippers just got the hammer dropped down on them by the NBA. The whole story, I'm not going to look this up, we already did a little expose deep dive into Dejan Love. But basically there had been an article like a month or two ago. So Kauai Leonard has been the Clippers star and he got traded this summer to the Raptors who he used to play for. That's who he won a title with five, six years ago.
Starting point is 00:20:58 And stuff started to come out about how. his like contract in los angeles when he played for the clippers was kind of fishy and i think i don't know exactly like how how it came out like how it came about but it did and so the nba started doing an investigation it was sounding like there wasn't going to be enough evidence of any sort of foul play of like contract structure but basically so the thing is like the issue is circumnavigating, is that the word? Circumventing, rather. Circumventing is a good word for this.
Starting point is 00:21:33 Circumventing the salary cap rules by finding alternate ways to pay your player. So, you know, in most sports, baseball excluded, there's a salary cap, and so you can only pay your roster X amount of money, $200 million, $300 million a season, whatever it is. Football, it's like $350 million or something a year right now. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:21:55 I assume NBA is a little bit less. Hockey's got to be way less than that. I don't know the numbers. But so imagine instead of, you know, you got Kauai Leonard, really good player, imagine you can pay him $50 million a year and that counts towards your salary cap, or you can get creative and do what you're not allowed to do, which is pay him actually $10 million a year. And then also make sure he gets a sponsorship with Daktronics, the scoreboard brand.
Starting point is 00:22:26 which I think, I don't remember all the details about this, but I think it was basically like Dactronics has never had a player sponsorship before, which is like a huge smoking gun. And it's like, why would you, why would your scoreboard want a player, like, endorsement? Like, who are you selling to? Is this really like a big B2C market? Anyways, I'm not a business guy. So, and I don't remember what Dactronics relationship is with the Clippers,
Starting point is 00:22:52 but there's got to be something there. So basically, Instead of paying Kauai's salary through the salary cap structure, which is just fair play, what everyone has agreed to do, they were funneling like half of his contract or something through a Dactronic sponsorship because that doesn't count towards a salary cap so they can spend more on other players, which, as you could probably assume, is a gigantic no-no in how these leagues are structured. So the Clippers, what did their owner, Balmer, C-Balmer got fined, like $30 million. which sounds like a lot, but he's like a billionaire. So it's like if I got to find a thousand or something like that, it's like, okay, slap on the wrist.
Starting point is 00:23:35 But the biggest thing for the clippers is they're totally effed because they just lost their next five first-round draft picks they had forfeited. And I think if I read correctly, they already gave their 2027 draft pick to, I think, the Thunder. And they gave their 2028 draft pick to another team. I don't remember in what trade or capacity. And so the next two they don't have, and then they lose their next five after that. I think the math someone did was the Clippers' next first-round draft pick is in fourth grade right now.
Starting point is 00:24:13 And the cherry on top of all this is this happens as they are, like, trading away Kauai Leonard, their best player by far, to try to like rebound and rebuild. And unfortunately, I mean, in most sports, this is true, but if you don't have your next seven first-round picks, you're not going to be rebounding at all. So what is the moral of the story?
Starting point is 00:24:35 Why did I even bring it up? Is it funny? Not really? It's, I don't know. I guess the point I'm trying to make is if Dactronics wants to reach out to me. I don't, you know, there's no legal stuff you got to worry about. You can just sponsor me. I'll read your ad 60 seconds a week.
Starting point is 00:24:51 And I don't have any, you know, limitations on how you can pay me illegally. So just reach out. I'll draw up a contract. I'll get ChatGPT to write. It'll be great. And we will happily sponsor Dactronics. Until then, we will rely on some other longstanding supporters of our program. We thank them for their service.
Starting point is 00:25:16 Folks like Home Pride, Oregon, guys, if you are looking to buy a house or maybe you're selling a house in Central Oregon, and you want to go make sure that everything check. out how old are those copper pipes what's the flashing like on your roof hey you got any french drains how's that sump pump working these are all questions my dad steve is going to ask us he's going through it like a fine tooth comb 541 4100316 or email homepride organ at gmail dot com for a great home inspection in central oregon go with the experts home pride organ inspection perfection.
Starting point is 00:25:56 You should also know that when you're listening to the Beantown podcast most every week, you are here in crisp, clear audio quality. You're probably thinking to yourself, that would sound good with a psalm reading or maybe a performance of how great thou art or maybe even, you know, like one of those doomsday preachers who shows up on the side of the street on State Street or Michigan Ave here in Chicago and preaches about the end of days like it's a left behind novel. they all would probably be using the Samson Q2U series.
Starting point is 00:26:26 It's got crisp, clear audio. You can trust whether you're more of a Pentateuch guy or letters to the Colossians. I feel like you don't really hear about the Colossians in any capacity outside of the letter they got from presumably Paul. Like what was their deal? Where was, is it Colossus?
Starting point is 00:26:51 Is that the name of the place? are the Colossians from Colossus? Doesn't Colossus the name of like an ancient Greek monster who is really big or something? I don't know what's going on with the Colossians. It's not a word you ever see come up anywhere else. At least like Ephesians, it's like, oh yeah, Ephesus. It's like an ancient city in Turkey. Pulls out, you know, shows up in like a jeopardy clue from time to time.
Starting point is 00:27:16 But I don't know what the deal is with the Colossians. if someone would want to fill me in, some ecumenical expert, that's right, ecumenical, E-C-U-N-E-M-I-C-A-L, a word that means relating to the word of God, I think, I don't know, I'm not going to look it up. Just trust me, bro. I was a religious studies minor, okay?
Starting point is 00:27:40 I had to take six whole classes to get that distinction. And I put it to really good use in my professional career. graduated college 10 and a half years ago. You know what? I probably never would have even known about the Samson Q2U series if I didn't have a religious studies minor, and where would this show be without Samson?
Starting point is 00:28:01 When God speaks, he uses the Samson. In a sense, because we use the Samson Q2U series every week, most weeks here on the show, it's essentially like I'm the mouthpiece of God. And I will not. be elaborating any further on that.
Starting point is 00:28:22 Of course, our good friends at Cutsby Q, looking forward today, I, you know, I try to do like a, you know, just general maintenance shave essentially once a week is my typical routine. And I think last week, I'm, you know, more, it's usually more of a weekend thing. I'm kind of out of rhythm right now. So I'm kind of a midweek thing, Wednesday to Wednesday, Thursday, or Thursday, but I've definitely let it go an extra one or two days here. So the neck beard is spooky. It's like on a computer science major in college living in a basement somewhere.
Starting point is 00:28:55 And so we got to do a little nip and tuck. I got to, for sure, yuck this yum tonight or tomorrow after my run. We'll see. But, you know, who will be doing it? Holding my hand the whole way through our good friends at Cuts by Q. From beehives to bangs, how does it go? From bull hives, beehives to bangs, fall hawks to flat tops and everything. in between.
Starting point is 00:29:18 Email us cuts by Q at Yahoo.com to book your appointment today or call us 815-298-7200. Cuts by Q, Q, UTSY, when you need a fresh due. Something snappy or new. Call the experts at cuts by Q. And of course, guys, we get the NFL season for real, starting in five days here. Live from Seattle Patriots at Seahawks,
Starting point is 00:29:42 the next day in Australia, 49ers versus Roe. Rams, and then you got a whole slate of Sunday action. Not to mention college football really took off last night. I know there's like the Week Zero games last weekend, but last night saw the triumphant start to the Big Ten season for such teams as the Illinois fighting Aligni beating UAB. Minnesota Golden Gopher is knocking off eastern Illinois, who you may know as the school that both Tony Romo and Jimmy Garoppolo attended.
Starting point is 00:30:17 And then to finish off the triumvirate of Big Ten dominance, you had Rutgers losing to UMass, who I don't think won a game all year last year. So that's pretty embarrassing. Not that anyone expects Rutgers to kick ass at football, but it's just like, really, you lost to Massachusetts? Okay, what were you guys doing all summer? Not practicing? Interesting.
Starting point is 00:30:45 And the thing about Rutgers, you know, losing a team like, UMass, by the way, Beantown Sports, like a better better. It's shocking in one sense because it's like Big Ten losing to Massachusetts and it's like what the hell is this? No one expects Rutgers to be a world beater. But you zoom, you know, rewind two or three years.
Starting point is 00:31:08 Look at University of Indiana. They have the exact same reputation as a school like Rutgers where it's just like, yeah, it's a football joke. And then come back to the present day and they just go undefeated. Their quarterback gets drafted number one in the NFL. So your name does not, your reputation does not determine how you have to perform that
Starting point is 00:31:30 upcoming season. I know there's a lot more to this of like recruiting, coaching, and all that stuff. But what I'm saying is like we should be able to, you know, hold Rutgers feet to the fire a little bit and say, you're really embarrassing us. not that I have a lot of stock in the Big Ten football, just generally speaking, although they have won, what, three straight titles now, which is pretty impressive. I mean, as a Northwestern graduate school alum, I would love to see them do well. It's not really their priority these days, although the new Ryan Field should be cool.
Starting point is 00:32:06 But generally, my point is it's really embarrassing for all of us when Rutgers loses to UMass. because Indiana can go from laughing stock to undefeated, and Rutgers is going from laughing stock to what the fuck. Thank you to our ad sponsors. A couple more things I wanted to get to here. We'll finish up with a Labor Day themed trivia question. I don't have too much more. We'll let you go before much longer here on the show.
Starting point is 00:32:39 But it is Labor Day weekend, which we talked about at the beginning of the program here. Everyone is going here in Chicago. I go to the Ark, Noah's Ark, what is it called, the Ark Light Music Festival, happening in Union Park, which is over by the United Center. It's a pretty small, like, corner lot kind of thing. It's where the Pitchfork Music Festival used to be, which no longer exists. Speaking of a pitchfork, the one and only time I went to Pitchfork, I think, was the last year as in existence, like three years ago or something.
Starting point is 00:33:18 randomly went on a whim at the last second because we have a couple of friends rachel's college roommate and her husband but they were going they had an extra ticket i got the invite a lot of fun that's the the place where i discovered and i say discovered as if i'm like a huge fan now i still like just basically know this one song that i listened to from time to time but the artist perfume genius i don't know if you're familiar good like indie rock um popish artist but he's He's like this gay guy from Iowa. Excuse me, he would have had a rough upbringing. And that comes out in his music.
Starting point is 00:33:57 But that's where I saw perfume, perfume, perfume, genius, perform. Say that five times fast. And the only reason I mentioned that is I literally woke up. I would say 50 to 60% of the days I wake up, I have a very specific song stuck in my head. Sometimes it's something I've been listening to a lot and it just makes sense why they'd be stuck in my head.
Starting point is 00:34:18 Other times it's slug. like mornings like this morning or per god i can't say it perfume genius's song on the floor not the jalo one the other one is stuck in my head and beyond that i had a dream i don't remember exactly how the dream shook out but the like point of the dream was that i needed to perform this song i needed to perform perfume geniuses song on the floor and i absolutely nailed it in my dream i sang it way better than I can actually command my vocals in real life. So I woke up and had to listen to it on YouTube and five minutes later and eight hours later or however long it's been today, 10 hours. Now we come full circle talking about pitchfork and Arklight Music Festival in Union Park.
Starting point is 00:35:10 Let's look up Arklight Music Festival. Is it called Arklight Music Festival? Arc Music Festival. Arc Light, that's a cinema brand, is that right? Arc Music Festival, September 4th through 7th, 2026, Union Park. Apparently it's like an ADM thing or house music, so I'm skeptical that we're going to have heard of any of this. But house music reminds me of,
Starting point is 00:35:37 there's this great, it's my favorite house music song of all time. I think I learned about it when I was a freshman in college, and we had like a, you know, it's actually the class I used to teach or co-teach adjunct when I was employed at my previous university, which is my alma mater, DePaul, you might know it. And in that like seminar freshman class, we had one week about house music. And I remember listening to this song in class and it's just like super. catchy beat and the song is house nation by jack master funk and the rude boy of house from 1986 house master boys house nation go look it up on uh youtube looks like there's an eight minute
Starting point is 00:36:31 version and there's a 14 minute version i don't know if i know if i know the 14 minute version but i'm intrigued i'm going to have to listen to it later then that's going to be stuck in my head when i wake up tomorrow but yeah that's our music pick of the week House Nation by Grandmaster, Funkmaster Boys, whatever it is called, whatever I just said. Let's look at the arc music lineup set times. All right, here we go. Starts today. We're already missing it. It's three hours in. Let's see. These are just some of the names from today. We have Chason Status, Tiga B2B Brenello, Canary Yellow. Zulan
Starting point is 00:37:17 Bad Boombox B2B Mischuleft Medusa B2B Genesee What is this B2B I'm seeing this all over Like half of these artists have like B2B in the name What does that mean?
Starting point is 00:37:32 Someone clue us in tweet at us at Beantowncast or email us Beantown Podcast at Yahoo.com And Beantown B2B podcast at Yahoo.com What the heck is this B2B I see everywhere? Like half of the people have it Muffy. That's one of our nicknames for Maple. She's over here snoozing. Also not going to
Starting point is 00:37:54 Arklight House Music Festival. Tomorrow we've got Super Jane. DJ hyperactive B2B, Lindsay, Herbert. It's got to be something like featuring. Like what is what does B2B mean? I got to look this up now because I'm not going to be able to sleep. B2B meaning music. Everyone knows business to business. Back to Back. Two DJs share the same stage. Okay, back to back. Trace Mortimer, B2B Cole Knight, Clooney, Mao Pee, Nicole Maudibur, B2B Paco Osuna, B2B Dubfire. And, of course, don't forget, chaos and the CBD.
Starting point is 00:38:45 We go to Sunday, Son of Sun, Swimming Paul, Mochak. M-O-C-H-A-K Beltron, I don't know if that's Carlos Beltron or not Ten Cust B-I-S-B-I-S-C-I-T-S and M-C-R-T of course And guys, the fun goes all the way through the holiday
Starting point is 00:39:17 Because on Monday We've got Honey-D-Jahn Lucid L-U-S-I-D-D Oh, this is a going to be a fun one at 2 p.m. on Monday at the expansion stage do not miss ugi b-to-b-b-fives ph-i-v-es we've got boys noise b-to-be Hirokuy Yamamura obviously he's going to be there we got bush baby bullet tooth cloud with a k and of course rounding things out our good friends 3 p.m. on the midway stage dunes of dawn
Starting point is 00:39:58 So don't miss the arc music festival. How much has a pass for one of these things cost? Four-day GA, buy now. Let's see if we can still buy this. Will it still show me the ticket price? Let's see. $499. Holy shit.
Starting point is 00:40:21 I just... Look, everyone's got their own music styles. I love jazz. I love classical music. I love indie rock. Some people don't like that. That's okay. Everyone's got their own tastes.
Starting point is 00:40:32 But I have a hard time getting behind, like, the DJ set, house music. And I like house music, but just like the DJ set, EDM, like, four-day festival. And I don't want to yuck DJ's yums. DJ's yums would be a great. I'm surprised they're not on the set list, DJ Yums or yuck my yumb. but it just to my untrained year okay i think every style of music has its own uh sort of bandwidth or spectrum of like creativity if you will like i mean if you want to take classic rock or rock and roll as an entire genre it's like it can be extremely good at two songs that are
Starting point is 00:41:22 completely far apart same thing with classical country is an example where i think it starts to get a little bit more narrow in terms of like the variation of sound. But even then, you get, you know, plenty of, like, different styles and variation. Now, you get to, like, house music, trap music, edm music. And again, I'm not even criticizing it. This is just my observation of, like, how it sounds to my ear. The variation, the, I don't want to say creativity, but, like, the difference from one
Starting point is 00:41:54 song to the next feels extremely narrow to me. I don't know if this is just, oh, I don't know what I'm, I don't know, like, what to listen for or my own just, like, biases. But my point being is, I can't, you know, it's one thing to do, like, four days to Lollapalooza because, you know, even though it's young people's music in quotes, and I personally wouldn't enjoy most of it, it's like, yeah, you're going to get a lot of different styles for the most part. You go to a four-day EDM festival, four-day past, 500 bucks plus fees. and are you really hearing that many different things?
Starting point is 00:42:28 I don't know. I would love it if some EDM fan emailed in the show and explained it to us. And maybe the answer is, no, it's not that different, but I just really like the vibe and the culture. And that's okay. Like, everyone's got their own thing. But I feel like after like an hour of the pulse pounding music
Starting point is 00:42:49 rattling inside my head, I would just want to, like, sit down on a bench in an air-conditioned room and read a book or something. Like, I can't imagine doing that for eight hours, four days straight. So that's the Ark, not Light, music festival happening this weekend in Union Park. I will stick to my perfume genius. Thank you very much. Our trivia question of the week here is Labor Day related,
Starting point is 00:43:18 and I do have a bonus for you. Here is my question. The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which is well known here in the human resources world, set the first ever U.S. federal minimum wage. What was that hourly minimum wage set by the 1938 FLSA? So again, essentially the question is, when the U.S. first introduced the federal minimum wage, 1938, how much was that hourly wage? If you want any more time to debate yuck your yum, get the gist of this question, you can pause, but I think this is just kind of a go with your gut sort of thing, right? The answer, 25 cents per hour.
Starting point is 00:44:10 I think actually, did I write that down wrong? I thought it was 25 cents an hour, and now there's just something in my head where I'm like, oh, maybe I, because it was like a multiple choice question I found. Let's see what AI says just to get a quick little double confirmation. First ever minimum wage USA. I just want to make sure I get this right. It'd be really embarrassing. Yeah, that's what AI says to you.
Starting point is 00:44:40 Okay, I don't know what I was thinking of. The answer is 25 cents per hour. My bonus question to you is what is the current U.S. federal minimum wage? So we are, what, almost 90 years later, 88 years later, it was 25 cents an hour. How much is the U.S. federal minimum wage now? Again, if you want any more time, go ahead and pause because I'm about to review the answer. The answer is $7.25 per hour. And my final parting thought on this because I thought it would be interesting to compare.
Starting point is 00:45:16 We all bitch and moan about how expensive everything is these days. and it is, but I just like saying bitch and moan. The U.S. dollar, if you're comparing apples to apples here, the U.S. dollar from 1938 to 2026 has inflated or as value has increased by 2,300 percent. And if you compare then the minimum wages, $0.25 an hour to $7.25 an hour, that's a 2,900% increase, meaning that minimum wage is far outpacing. how much the U.S. dollar has gone up by. So you're welcome.
Starting point is 00:45:57 Okay, I'm surprised the Trump admin hasn't pulled that one out of their keyster to talk about how great life is these days. But life is great when you're listening to the Beantown podcast. If I can, usually we go right from trivia to our outro music here, and I suppose we'll do that in a moment here. But just thanks, everyone, we don't say it enough for tuning in to our. our show. Quinn David Furness presents the Beantown podcast, whether this is your first year,
Starting point is 00:46:28 maybe you're from Nigeria, Benin City, and you're just learning about us the first time, or maybe you're a day one beanhead diehard. And you've bought, you know, little Samson's for your own house and whatever. Thank you so much for supporting our show. Take the weekend off. Don't do any labor. that 725 an hour will be waiting for you when you come back to the office on Tuesday morning. 725 an hour, what does that come out to? I know my last thought here, our last calculation.
Starting point is 00:47:04 When I worked in my previous job, the yearly hourly number we used, or the number of hours in a year we used for like hourly to salary. Calculations was 1820. So pre-tax, if you're working that, a full year, this is going to, to be really sad and like jarring when I see the actual calculation. If you're working 1,820 hours a year, aka full time, making federal minimum wage right now, you're making $13,195 pre-tax after whatever the tax rate is there, I don't know what, like 15%, something like that, you're making take-home pay $11,216 on a minimum wage where it can full. time. So this is America baby. That's our second. First perfume genius on the floor. First song recommendation of the week. Second one, Childish Gambino. This is America. That's what I have for you
Starting point is 00:48:07 guys on the program today. Thank you for listening to our show. Thanks for supporting our show. I hope everyone has a happy Labor Day weekend. Stay safe, stay sane. I'll check in on you next week. Bye-bye. And our third single recommendation of the week, lest we forget, less is another fun word, isn't it? L-E-S-T. House Nation by the Housemaster Boys and Rude Boy of House, preferably the 14-minute version. Okay, I'm going to go turn that on, and that's it.
Starting point is 00:50:01 Bye-bye.
