Everyone talks about what men SHOULD do, but it's the things you never do that protect your reputation, your family, your money, and your self-respect.In this episode I'm walking through all 15 — why you never make a permanent decision on temporary emotions, never spend money to look rich, never let your mouth write checks your ass can't cash, never abandon the people who loved you before the success... and #15, the one that will change your life the most. Doesn't matter if you're in your 20s, 30s, 40s or beyond — this is the list I wish someone handed me. Average is the enemy — let's get after it.

Starting point is 00:00:00 Don't you wish you could just hit skip on the worst parts of your life? You know the same way you can skip an ad? I get it. I'm Siaiaa and I live in Ice Cove. I've made some questionable decisions that didn't end up the way I planned. And today I'm still figuring it out. Somehow things usually get worse before they get better. Apparently, that's how I roll.
Starting point is 00:00:22 So bundle up and come along for the bumpy ride. Stream a new episode of North of North Tuesdays on CBC Gem. personal responsibility you can take, the better your life will be. Everything starts and stops with the decisions that you make. Welcome to the Bedroskulean show. 15 things you should never do as a grown ass men. Guys, welcome to the Bedros Koolian show. My name is Bedroskulian. In today's episode is a culmination of my 52 years on this planet. And it doesn't matter if you're in your 20s, 30s, 40s, or beyond. If you were to come up to me and say, B, what do you know about life as a man over the last 52 years of living, starting businesses, creating a family, moving
Starting point is 00:01:06 from a different country to the United States, and seeing the world, I would tell you these are the 15 things you should never do as a man, right? We often talk about what you should do, but let's talk about what you should not do as a man. Some of these might ring true, and number 15 is probably the most valuable one that you can take away, although I would say all 15 themselves are massively valuable. So let's dive into it. Thing number number, Number one, you should never do as a man is to never destroy your reputation for a moment of pleasure or weakness. Warren Buffett says it best.
Starting point is 00:01:38 He says it takes 20 years to build your reputation and 20 minutes to ruin it. Because in that moment of weakness or pleasure, you will ruin your reputation. And as a man, your reputation is your credit score with the rest of the world. We men judge one another based on each other's reputation, what other people say about you, based on their experience of you. And so if you ruin your reputation, you've ruined your credit score, and no man will respect you,
Starting point is 00:02:06 want to do business with you, or align themselves with you. Thing number two is never make a permanent decision while experiencing temporary emotions, right? Never make a permanent decision while experiencing temporary feelings. And what I mean by this is feelings like anger, loneliness, lust, embarrassment, you know, desperation, depression.
Starting point is 00:02:26 These are all terrible things that we experience as men as humans. But if you make a permanent decision, and let's just call a spade what it is, if you decide to take your own life during a moment where you're not thinking clearly, there is no reversing that. You leave a permanent scar on your family,
Starting point is 00:02:45 the people that love you, the people that rely on you, the people that want you to be there for them, the people that want to grow old with you, right? The damage that you do to your kids, to your siblings, to your parents, to your spouse is all irreversible once you decide to end it. Now, there are other decisions you can make that end up causing permanent damage while you're feeling these temporary emotions. And the problem with that is that now you're going to have regret.
Starting point is 00:03:17 You're going to have embarrassment. You're going to have debt. You might end up in jail. And so I share this with you because taking a beat when you're feeling lonely, angry, lust, embarrassment, desperation, depression. You're going through hard times in life. It's the losing season. And you don't know how long it's going to keep going
Starting point is 00:03:36 before the winning season comes around. It's overwhelming and it is chaotic and it is just unnecessary. Then you can't deal with it any further. Guess what? Take a beat. Go get a workout in. Go walk on the beach at the park.
Starting point is 00:03:52 Just reflect. Go find a friend and talk to them about your problems. Even if your friend can't solve your problems, you know, studies show that just talking to someone about your problems and being heard and understood, not solved, not helped, because not everyone can solve your problems and help you through your problems. That's a lot of what you have to do. But taking it from the inside and putting it out there in the world and talking to someone about it will help take that pressure and overwhelm off.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Third thing, never to do as a grown-ass man. never beg for someone to choose you. I don't care if it's a woman, not a woman, not a friend, not a business partner. Go where you're respected, all right? If you're not respected and valued, never beg for someone to choose you. And the time that men do that is when they feel most defeated. They will beg for people to choose them and stay with them, even though those people, whether it's a woman or a friend who's a bad friend to you or a business partner when they're not
Starting point is 00:04:59 supposed to be in your life. Their expiration date has come and gone, but because your self-esteem, your self-worth is so low that you're begging them to stay. I'm here to tell you, brother, you don't have to do that. You focus on building yourself up. You become the 2.0 version of the man you're supposed to be. And then you go where you are respected. And if you're able to do that, life's going to be a lot better for you.
Starting point is 00:05:21 Thing number four, never let a woman become your entire identity. I see this in young men especially. When I say young men, I'm 52 years old, so to me, teens, 20s, and even 30s, you're a young man to me. Never let a woman become your entire identity. Look, you can love her deeply. You can have date nights with her. You can have so many things in common with her.
Starting point is 00:05:44 But the moment you begin to build your entire identity around her and you no longer have friends, you abandon your sense of purpose and meaning in life. A few episodes ago, we talked about how Ed, who's behind the camera, ran into a guy who was installing the alarm system at BK strength at my gym. And Ed, the guy told you something to the effect of, yeah, I used to work out, you know, because he's in our gym. Yeah, I used to work out, but now I don't. And when you asked why, he's like, well, because I got married.
Starting point is 00:06:13 He tied up his identity so deep into his wife, into his marriage, that he abandoned working out, the thing that is known to be great for us men, to give us mental health, a place where we can have a healthy outlet for our anger and rage. And all men, we have plenty of anger and rage. And so never let yourself be so tied into a woman where your identity is a byproduct of being with her. Number five, never spend money to look rich. This is something that no grown man should be doing. Spending money to look rich. A grown man shouldn't be. financing their image while privately drowning in debt. Think about that.
Starting point is 00:06:56 If you're financing your image while privately drowning in debt, who are you trying to impress? We live in a time where everyone's doing everything for social media and no one's logically thinking, critically thinking about I'm going to live like I'm broke. I'm going to save as much money as I can. I'm going to try and create as many income streams as I can so that I can create real financial freedom. And the funny thing is, I've been there. I've been there. Some 20 years ago, as I started on my entrepreneurial journey, I ended up making, and I came
Starting point is 00:07:30 across some money, right? As you start making some money, you're like, you know what? I need to upgrade my shit. And I upgraded my wardrobe and I bought eight custom suits over a one year period, had eight custom suits made over a one year period. These cost me tens of thousands of dollars. Ironically, now that I have real wealth, real financial freedom, real time freedom, what do I cruise around in? Jeans and a Fuel Hunt T-shirt.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Or are you going to find me in shorts at the HQ if it's a hot day or if I'm, you know, heading to the gym afterwards, right? And so the funny thing is when we try and look rich is probably when we're most broke. When you're most wealthy is when you don't give a shit about trying to look rich and wealthy. And so understand that factor and don't get yourself into debt that you can't get yourself out of without a bankruptcy. Number six, never embarrass your woman to impress others. Now, I'm going to tell you a story about this. I knew a dude and Leighton and Ed, you guys know who this guy is. And I'll tell you guys after the camera stopped rolling.
Starting point is 00:08:35 But I knew a dude because I don't want to share his name on the episode right now. Great dude. He was married. I say he was because he's not. longer married. But every time he and his wife would come to my events and he ultimately became a coaching client and then ultimately became a friend. But every time he was around me and the group of us along with his wife, he would take pot shots at her. Now in his defense, she would take little jabs at him too. And I remember feeling weird and awkward about that, thinking like, man,
Starting point is 00:09:08 that's not normal. Like why would someone be this way, taking shots at their wife in front of others? Now, maybe he was doing that because he was resentful towards her and he was being passive aggressive. Maybe he was doing that because he was trying to get a laugh out of the group of people that we were standing in. Maybe he was doing that to try and impress someone, right? Whatever the reason is, whatever the reason is, if you're disrespecting your partner to get laughs from friends or business partners or the group of people you're standing around,
Starting point is 00:09:37 that train is long gone. Interestingly enough, about four years later, I heard that they got a divorce and it was a very messy divorce and they had two kids and those kids suffered the most because of it. I want you to click the franchising link, fill out the application to see if there's a territory available in your town and your area. Number seven, never stay where you're repeatedly disrespected just because you're afraid of being alone. I would rather be alone. I would rather be my own best friend than stay somewhere where I'm constantly disrespected. And when people tell you that, hey, I've learned my lesson and this disrespect will not
Starting point is 00:10:51 continue and then it continues, that is evidence that they do not how, they do not know how to change that pattern in their life. Right. Maybe they come from a life of chaos. Maybe they come from a life of being disrespected. Maybe that is how they choose to live their life. I don't know, but I can tell you this, that you should exit that relationship, that friendship, that business partnership. Never allow anyone to disrespect you and for you to stay in it because you're afraid of being alone. I will choose alone and being my best friend over being with someone who's disrespectful because that slowly starts eating away at your self-worth, self-esteem, your confidence. And before you know it, you're a shell of a man, right? And so losing your self-respect can
Starting point is 00:11:37 follow you everywhere once you stay with someone who disrespects you because what ends up happening is you end up losing your self-respect. Someone who disrespects you long enough, you stay with them long enough, you begin to lose respect for yourself. And that's a very, very unfortunate thing. Number eight, never allow your mouth to write checks that your ass can't cash. Now, typically, when I grew up in the Section 8 housing complexes of Santa Ana, California, In Anaheim, typically this was, don't start a fight or don't mouth off to people if you can't fight and defend yourself and flatten that guy out. But today, that same thing applies everywhere in life.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Never allow your mouth to write a check that your ass can't cash. In other words, don't make promises that you can't keep. Don't start fights that you can't end. Don't say something that you can't back up. Like, oh, yeah, I'm going to be launching this business. going to make all this money, it's going to change this industry. A year or two later, you're still the same schlep. Right? Because what that does again is it begins to erode your reputation. People start seeing you as a clown. And nobody, remember in the hierarchy of men, you don't
Starting point is 00:12:53 want to be categorized as that dude that doesn't follow through. That's a flake. That's a clown. Because you will forever be clowned on. Number nine, never become the man who has an excuse for everything. Eventually, people will stop believing your circumstances and start believing your patterns. Because if you have an excuse for everything, I was late because of this. I couldn't do that because of this. Oh, because of the economy. Oh, because of the, how many more excuses are you going to make?
Starting point is 00:13:22 The more personal responsibility you can take, the better your life will be. Everything starts and stops with the decisions that you make. You should have woken up earlier. You should have hit the road sooner. You should have invested more time into preparation, right? Each time you make an excuse, you start looking like a fool to the people around you. Number 10, never talk constantly about what you're going to do. Instead, at some point, you need to actually start doing it because announcements without
Starting point is 00:13:51 results form this self-deception and you begin to buy into your own hype thinking like, well, you know, I really am a badass, but soon you're fooling yourself. you're literally fooling yourself trying to impress to other people around you and that's not very good look number 11 never borrow money to maintain a lifestyle that does not belong to you yet i've seen so many people do this borrow money to maintain an image and then they end up not being able to now there's one thing to borrow money to start a business to raise capital to start a business right but to borrow money to an image, right? Impressing strangers is one of the most expensive addictions on earth. You're never going to win that race. And I know in a world of social media where appearances matter,
Starting point is 00:14:44 the more you buy into that hype, the more you're going to borrow bag and steal and put yourself under a lot of pressure. Number 12, never abandon the people who loved you before you became successful. And I can tell you this right now, the more successful you become, the more new people you're going to meet who want to be your friends who say they're rooting for you, but really want to gain something from you. If you've got people from back in the day who loved you, supported you, believed in you, don't forget them, pull them up with you. That doesn't mean you have to take care of them financially.
Starting point is 00:15:22 But they're probably going to be the ones that are tightest to you. I've got a couple of friends like that from back in the day when I was a broke bus boy, Broke personal trainer, broke, you know, bouncer at a gay club. And the friends from that era, man, I could rely on them for anything. I could call them up and say, bring a shovel and they will show up, no questions asked. Number 13, never let another man's success make you bitter. I see this so many times. Instead, why don't you study him, right?
Starting point is 00:15:57 Compete with him for what you want. like seeing him as competition, healthy competition, but envy will make you hate people in a way that will just eat you up alive inside. Envy, jealousy is poison that spews from the inside out and makes you toxic, right? Having bitterness towards someone because they're successful, look, maybe right now it's not your season. Maybe it's their season. You didn't see the work they did in the dark on the weekends at nights. And so being bitter and envious and jealous of someone's success, one day when your time comes,
Starting point is 00:16:37 you're going to end up having that happen to you. They're going to be bitter towards you. They're going to be envious of you. When you don't clap for them, when you start winning, they're not going to clap for you. Number 14. Never become too successful to apologize. Just because you're good at making money
Starting point is 00:16:54 and you have developed success, wealth, riches, even fame, and you've got a big social media account and people stop you on the streets, does not put you above apologizing when you fuck up. And I can tell you this, success, wealth can get to your head. And it can inflate your ego to make you think that everything you say and do is right and accurate. And it's not always the case.
Starting point is 00:17:22 Simply saying, I was wrong and I have. apologize for that goes a long way. And it might be one of the strongest sentences a grown man can say, I was wrong and I apologize. That is humility. That is the death of the ego. And that is what a 2.0 type of man would do. And finally, number 15, never reach a place in life where everybody else is responsible for your life, except you. I've seen this happen a lot. where you blame your parents, your ex, your boss, the economy, your childhood. Some of those things might explain where you started off, but it doesn't have to necessarily be how you ended off, right?
Starting point is 00:18:07 Guess what? You made a bad decision with the spouse you chose. You're going to have to go through that divorce. You're going to have to suck it up, Buttercup, and then figure your way out back out of that debt and still be a good parent, good dad to those kids, and then rebuild yourself to find a better spouse in the future. If your parents abused you or didn't raise your right or didn't give you what you needed,
Starting point is 00:18:32 you could either hold them accountable and feel like a victim, or you can give your kids a better life and have a second chance at a parent-child relationship. This time you're the parent. And believe you me, brother, that is healing. But each time you put yourself in a place where everybody else is responsible for where you are in life, what you do is you create, you give everyone else the locus of control. The moment you do that, you lose control. The most successful people, the happiest people, the people that live in a state of abundance
Starting point is 00:19:07 are those that have internal locus of control. And if you can develop that for yourself, then you will be an unstoppable self-mastered man.
