Starting point is 00:01:41 Thanks for calling the burner phone. If you leave a message after the tone, we may have to make it into a podcast. Hello, my little dialers, and welcome back to burner phone. It's just me again. This week, we'll get Hannah back eventually. She's currently, they had a show last night, Giggly Squad show in Tacoma, Washington, and they're heading, well, they headed to Portland last night after the show, back to the eight-hour time difference zone. So it's just very hard to organize. But anyway, it's, it's me. We're establishing,
Starting point is 00:02:21 we're establishing a rapport here on Burnaphone. And after two weeks where I think there was maybe some intensity. I mean, we got great feedback about, particularly last week's episode. But, you know, let's face it, it wasn't that lighthearted. So I decided to go for something, you know, a bit, a bit easy, but also informative. because we're always on the hunt for stuff to watch. And like the stuff that comes out in the moment, it's getting promoted and it's easy to find.
Starting point is 00:03:03 But a lot of times there's television series that, you know, they slip through the cracks or they were kind of big at the time, but, you know, people forget about them. Or even sometimes they're just hard to find. That's kind of annoying, isn't it? You know, when you're just like Googling, like, how do I find the wire and then like for some reason it's no longer on HBO by the way I'm just
Starting point is 00:03:26 this is just a hypothetical it probably still is on HBO but uh you know and and then it's like you got to fucking subscribe to Amazon and then despite modern technology like sometimes like buying a series can be the most complicated thing of all time so um then you risk a thousand viruses to watch it on some weird website um so anyway uh hopefully in this one today's episode what i would love from today's episode is loads of people to go oh yeah i forgot about that one i always meant to watch that or oh my god that was such a good one i need to watch that again or i've never heard of that and i'm gonna i i i believed in the dialer's passion about what they thought their favorite series of all time is, and I'm going to go on the recommendation. Just whatever, I just want somebody,
Starting point is 00:04:22 everybody that's listening to at least get one good watch out of a recommendation that comes out of today's episode. I always forget to do this up top. So just very quickly, I'm at the end of my Irish tour, but I'm back in the States in a week and a half, less, actually, in nine days. and I am immediately in a place called Soul Jules in Pennsylvania. So I hit the road straight away in 15 days. I'll be in Soljules. And then I'm in Long Island. I'm in Providence, Rhode Island.
Starting point is 00:05:01 I'm in Michigan. In the comedy castle. I'm in Chicago again at Zanis and oh I've got tons of shows the rest have gone out of my mind but those are kind of the initial ones back in Phoenix I'm in Miami and I'm touring kind of hard until June and then I'm going to take it easy for the summer, write some new material and try to get Hannah to take a break which is not her strong point and recharge for the for the recharge and be creative throughout the summer to hit the road again in the autumn. So anyway, let's get into it with you guys.
Starting point is 00:05:44 I want to go, I'm going to go with one that, to me, but I think this might be showing sort of my age and my gender. To me, these were the ones I thought would be the obvious ones. But actually, they kind of weren't, but I want to get these ones out of the way. How are you doing, folks? the best TV show of all time has to be The Sopranos Absolutely fantastic show
Starting point is 00:06:09 But other than that I mean You gotta say Breaking Bad's got to be up there for sure And possibly Fuck that's a tough one isn't it I mean Sopranos Was just so good
Starting point is 00:06:30 it really was what else oh fucking Glenrow of course some of the greatest acting of all time it really was Mick Lally
Starting point is 00:06:41 absolutely fucking amazing you really really got to give it to him how he went out there in the last season it was absolutely amazing anyway there you go with folks
Starting point is 00:06:50 oh my God I actually listen I just read them I don't listen so one I didn't know that was a guy and two I didn't know it was an Irish guy
Starting point is 00:06:57 so I feel bad. Obviously we have some Irish listeners, but for the non-Irish listeners, you weren't busting your whole laughing when he said Glenrow. So there's just no way for me to, there's just no way for me to run through the cultural significance of Glenrow. But very quickly, it was a kind of an Irish evening soap opera that always played on Sunday evenings, I think like seven or 8 o'clock in Ireland. And after so many jokes about it, well, first of all, it was just like a kind of like a farming, it was like a rural soap opera. And it was great. And, you know, Ireland at that time was kind of, you know, like socially, it was not backward to be the wrong term, but like
Starting point is 00:07:44 it was socially conservative, very Catholic. And there were times where Glenn Rowe tackled some some tough issues, particularly for Ireland at that time. But obviously, it was great for Irish people because they could see themselves in these characters. And it's just iconic. It's just like a, it's, I don't know if it's, it's comparable to like dynasty and Dallas for those that are old enough to be connected to those. But just in that age of television where there just wasn't a lot on TV, like everyone knew Glenrow.
Starting point is 00:08:17 And of course, there's jokes about, like when you heard the Glenrow music, were like, you got the Sunday scary because you knew you were going back to school the next day. I used to hate it because I would always, it would mean that it was time for me to get the bus to go back to boarding school on a Sunday night. So anyway, that's, that's a quick Glenn Roe joke. But of course, I'm not surprised that it was a guy saying sopranos and breaking bad because I, by the way, I don't just think men love the sopranos, but I do think that maybe it's more male. Hanat never got into the sopranos, actually. was one of the things we discovered early in our relationship.
Starting point is 00:08:52 And I was very late to the Sopranos. I was not, I did not watch Sopranos even close to the time that it was going out. And I wasn't, like, I wasn't involved in the uproar over the ending. But I really did enjoy the Sopranos, the golden age of whatever they call peak TV. Just groundbreaking, really. Kind of changed the game, the Sopranos. just in terms of that, you know, high-quality script writing serialized television on HBO, where it could not be, you know, they could curse and it could, you know, violence and sexual themes
Starting point is 00:09:35 and, you know, just honestly, just an incredible collection of characters from, I mean, in a way, an overcovered area, the mafia, but fascinating, you know. So if you are somebody that's just watched everything, but maybe you're like younger, like younger even than Hannah. And you've watched a lot of the stuff that's like hot these days. Like, like you're currently into the White Lotus. And, you know, you've watched all the big shows of the last 10 years. And you haven't really dipped back into the sort of the early 2000s, sort of the beginning of whatever they call peak TV. Maybe giving the Sopranos a world. Because I think it holds up. I mean, listen, And there's always stuff that doesn't age great.
Starting point is 00:10:22 You know, society moves on and there's probably some stuff that might make the next generation uncomfortable. But overall, of all the different sort of TV shows that or even films that you kind of go like, oh, that was great. And then you watch it again. And you're like, oh, at this day and age or at my age, you know, sometimes you just age out of something, it kind of disappoints you. But I feel like the Sopranos holds and TikTok knows.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Like every now and then I'll get like in a weird Sopranos algorithm and my TikTok will suddenly flash up with like scenes of the Sopranos and it does always suck me in. So I think if you're a non-Sopranos person that that it holds. And like I don't want to spend all the time on the Sopranos, but and I don't want to give any spoilers if you haven't watched it, but the ending was very controversial. So how do I discuss the ending without spoilers? um well i i just i think the ending was incredible but i didn't think so at the time which is in a way i think shows how unbelievable the ending was because it took me a long time
Starting point is 00:11:35 to understand it and actually in the end it kind of aligned with my own beliefs about what happens at at the end um And I just think there's many layers to it. And you know what? Maybe if I remember at the end of this episode, I'll discuss the end. And therefore, people that haven't seen the Sopranos, we can, you can maybe just check out just at the end of the episode. Breaking Bad also, Hannah actually very late to Breaking Bad, I had a full rewatch with
Starting point is 00:12:11 Hannah. And she, it took her a while to commit. And actually, upon rewatch, I, I, I, I didn't remember how it does take a while. But again, when you're dealing with a complicated storyline and obviously an arc as sinister as a science teacher becoming a sort of a drug kingpin, like it does take time for that journey to develop without, because if it was too fast, like it just, it wouldn't be believable. But Hannah was completely transfixed.
Starting point is 00:12:44 So I do think that for those that haven't watched Breaking Bad, I think it hopefully. up as one of the great television series, but it does require patience. And I do feel a lot of the shows these days, they are assuming that the audience has less patience. And I don't know if that's fair. I think that might even be like a kind of like insulting the intelligence of the masses. But I feel that there's not the same patience to let a story develop and let characters develop in the recent great shows. Breaking Bed 100% had that, and it didn't overstay its welcome, which, you know, some might argue that The Sopranos was maybe one season too long.
Starting point is 00:13:31 You know, there's like a, there's like a dream, there's a kind of a dream season, which maybe, but like, you know, neither of them overstayed their welcome in a way that some series do. I'm looking at you, Dexter. I'm looking at you, The Walking Dead. they were just nice finishes, nice arcs. So I won't get, you know, I won't get into Breaking Bad. I feel like it's well covered, but 100% one of my, it's in my top five. So let's go off. I'll give more of my top five later on, but I don't want to flood the, I don't want to flood the zone early on with just my very male series that everyone kind of talks about.
Starting point is 00:14:14 So let's get into one that I actually really enjoyed season one. So this is from a dialer. Hey, guys. I know a lot of people are probably going to say friends or the office or how I met your mother. This might be an unpopular opinion. I was going to say decision for some reason. Popular opinion, but I really, really liked the show, Sinner. I know it's a little dark, but the first season just, like, blew my mind and just, like, it was a really, really, really good show.
Starting point is 00:15:04 I will say probably the first season was the best one out of the three or four that they have. but yeah I really really liked it and I feel like every time I recommended it like they loved it too so yeah I think this is a great recommendation but I'm going to give the caveat that they didn't stick the landing
Starting point is 00:15:30 but the flight was so fun that the rough landing still made the flight worth it in my opinion and there was a piece period of time during, because I can't even remember how I came up. And by the way, I'm assuming it's the sinner that you're talking about. Because you said sinner, but I'm pretty sure you're talking about the same series, which was originally a USA series, which is wild with Jessica Beale in season one. And it, it, the majority of it was very eerie, a kind of a, kind of a,
Starting point is 00:16:11 a good sort of mystery along with like a serious, like really intense psychological drama. And it is dark without a shadow of a doubt. But because I actually, because I do stand-up comedy, I love dark television. You know, like we got a lot more comedies in today than I expected, actually. And I think that was my own bias, that I have a bias towards not watching comedy in my spare time. But the sinner, it was, and it's shocking from early, and the way it sort of breaks down is quite fascinating. Now, like a lot of great sort of murder, mystery type shows, it can be hard to bring it all together because, you know, these things are always quite complicated in real life. And in real life, it's always the husband. So, you know, it's like, like, how do we make
Starting point is 00:17:11 this, you know, interesting and that it's not the husband? Even though like that fucking very annoying, like, do you remember that very addictive Hugh, I think it was Hugh Grant Julia Roberts series? Or maybe it was Hugh Grant Nicole Kidman. I can't even remember the name now because it fucking pissed me off so much because it does suck you in, but it was such bullshit. But anyway, I'm not going to give away anything on that. But if you know what I'm talking about, I think you'll appreciate the frustration. And that series that I just mentioned,
Starting point is 00:17:39 it was kind of like Upper East Side New York, kind of like murder mystery thing. That series was like really at a time where I was going, you know what? Like peak television is over. We're getting a lot of fucking shit. That seems good and leaves you hanging. And the sinner did finish a little week,
Starting point is 00:17:57 but it was very good leading up to the end. And I still think it's worth it. it. No, no spoilers, obviously, but there was there was times when I was watching that series where I was like, wow, this is fucking, this is good. This is like, this is a real winner and quite unique for the genre. So great recommend. And one, I think that like a lot of people may have skipped over. So go you. Now, I'm going to play one here that came in a lot and I've never watched it, but let's see what you guys think. Hey Des and maybe hi Hannah
Starting point is 00:18:33 I don't know if he'll be on this one But I think that the best TV series of all time Has to be New Girl Everyone says the office And listen I love The Office as a corporate girly But New Girl, for me, transcend the office It's just, it's got everything It is, every character is perfect
Starting point is 00:18:53 But I will say honorable mention Currently I'm watching Severance I'm not fully caught up yet and I also know that's on Apple TV, so I mean, I guess that is a TV series then. But anyway, New Girl, finally answer. Bye. Oh, dear. Did I mess up by saying TV series on my Instagram post?
Starting point is 00:19:13 And some people thought that you couldn't include streamers? Shit. Anyway, my love for Severance is well documented. But I can't even give an opinion on New Girl. But I had to include it because if there's people out there, that I haven't seen New Girl, we got, like, a ton of New Girl wrecks. Like, I didn't even realize how much of a phenomenon New Girl was. So I think I'm going to have to give it a watch, you know?
Starting point is 00:19:43 Because, like, I could never get into the office because I watched the British office at, like, as it was out. And I just loved it. And I could just never really get into what I consider to be. an American television disease of like stretching something out beyond its lifetime. You know, I think, by the way, I'm not ripping on American TV, but one of the big differences between sort of European television and what I really mean, I mainly mean British TV, which is pretty high quality, you know, in fairness.
Starting point is 00:20:22 But one of the great differences is that they just don't, you know, assume. that they need to keep something going for a long time, which I think can add to the quality of a series because you're not all the time thinking like, oh, shit, we need to keep these characters going. And therefore, you can just get more filler. And, you know, just sometimes like the stories are done. You know, you've taken, you've done everything you can
Starting point is 00:20:52 with this collection of characters within this scenario. And now you're doing a disservice to what was a great, thing, in my opinion. And so I could never really get into the American office. And also maybe just like a little bit of a kind of like a bias towards the OG, which is maybe I needed to get over that more, because I know loads of people who just are addicted to the office. As you can see here, a lot of people immediately mentioned the office. I think it's already been mentioned twice. So anyway, I have no opinion on New Girl other than I wanted to include it because so many people mentioned it. So if you were somebody that hasn't watched New Girl, I think we all need to dive in,
Starting point is 00:21:32 the non-New Girl people, you know, and we'll also find out if this is one of those scenarios where, you know, it's for the Girlies and I won't love it. I don't know. I don't know. So, let's go, let's go for, actually, this is one that people always tell me to watch, and I've never watched it. And I want to hear what they have to say. Okay. Hands down the best TV show to ever grace the television. It's always sunny in Philadelphia. The funniest show, hands down. I am not a TV watcher, but I have watched this series like eight times through. It's always funny. Every episode is funny. Yeah, you don't even have to smoke a joint to laugh at it, but it is funnier if you do. Yeah. So people always tell me. me that I should watch, it's always sunny. And I actually, I really got into Welcome to Rexham. So I got to know sort of McElheny through that. And even then, I didn't go back
Starting point is 00:22:41 and watch It's Always Sunny. So I really, I need to. And I've actually never heard a bad thing about it. So I think, thank you for for dialing in, for the dialers that haven't watched it, including myself, I think it's time for us to dive in. I believe Danny DeVito's in it, which that alone should have made me go just for the nostalgia of it. And again, the ones I haven't seen, I'm not going to talk on, obviously, but I do want to include them because I want this episode to be informative. Let's get into actually one that I started, and I didn't join, but I just, again, it's a comedy, so I just didn't keep it going, but I think it deserves a mention. Hey guys. So I have two. The first one is Schitt's Creek. It is just so funny, so cute. Every single client, oh my God, what's wrong with me? I just hook up, obviously, in case you can't tell me my voice. Every single character is just so individually funny and sweet and quirky. And I've watched it over and over like four times. It's my go-to having the background show. The second one is.
Starting point is 00:23:54 is modern family also so clever so funny the writing is so great every single character is just so fun and special in their own way and yeah love those shows love you guys wow we get so many comedy recommendations i was really shocked actually um so yeah i enjoyed i watched a lot of season one of shits creek um i actually knew somebody that was working on that show as a producer uh and i was like oh i need to check that out. And I really did enjoy it, but I just have this weird thing where like, if I'm sitting down to watch TV, I'm just not going to go for a comedy. However, I will watch a comedy on a plane. Like, I love curb your enthusiasm. But I never sit down to watch it at home. I only watch it on planes, which is like a weird thing. And when I watch it on a plane,
Starting point is 00:24:44 I love it. Like, and every time it pops up on my TikTok, I will always watch a curb, you know, like clip on my TikTok or whatever. But at home, I will never be like, oh, new season of curb, let's watch it, you know? So anyway, Schitt's Creek, I do think is worth a watch because I think it's a high quality comedy. I think the characters are really good. I've always loved Eugene Levy. His son is great fun in it. Catherine O'Hara, I believe, is the woman. And just like all the, you know, I was a big fan of, you know, waiting for Guffman and Best In Show and all those, you know, spinal tap, all those, you know, the shows that came out of that crowd. I loved all of those. So there is a bit of that energy, which is awesome.
Starting point is 00:25:38 So I 100% stand behind that, despite the fact that I didn't get through it, but that is not a good gauge on it being good or bad. modern family actually I feel like modern family is one of those odd shows where it's so successful that maybe some people can dismiss it because it's so mainstream but there were times in my life where I watched a lot of modern family and it never disappointed very funny and you know I think it doesn't need accolades because it's so successful but I think maybe like not enough respect in a way for just fucking how good it was, but also it was on ABC. It's a network TV show that plays like it's on a streamer or on cable, you know, because it skirted that line of like
Starting point is 00:26:29 what you can say on network TV. And obviously, my generation, we have a soft spot for Ed O'Neill, you know, because he's Al Bundy. And that was like very groundbreaking. Married with children was very groundbreaking comedy when we were kids, you know. But beyond that, obviously, I can't even say her name probably, so I'm not going to say it, but you know I'm talking about incredible Colombian actress is so funny in it and the gay couple, just everything, you know, everything about that show and the sort of the annoying dad and just all the characters just really work. So if you're somebody who never really did the modern family thing, I do think that's worth whatever it's on, Paramount, or a lot of the, a lot of the old network stuff is on one of the
Starting point is 00:27:16 streamers. And I think, I think it's worth a watch. That is, that is a, that's a high quality one, I have to say. So great recommendations from you. Again, shows that, you know, I wasn't even thinking would come through. Um, oh, we get into a, we get into a controversy. The one that you've all been waiting for. Spoiler alert. I haven't seen the ending because, all I've heard about it is complaints, but Game of Thrones is the best TV show I've ever watched. Okay, so that was short and sweet. And, I mean, it's hard to discuss the best TV shows of all time without discussing Game of Thrones. And the ending is an issue, you know?
Starting point is 00:28:00 It really is, you know, it really is like, you know, when you get in these arguments about can you separate the artist from the art? because, you know, some of our great artists have turned out to be horrific people. And so you just go, I could never listen to them again. Like, Game of Thrones, in a way, sometimes I feel like that with the ending, you know, where you're just like, can we appreciate the rest of it? Because the ending was so bad, left us so disappointed that the rest of it is tarnished by the end. I don't think it is. I just think it's unfortunate.
Starting point is 00:28:42 And I think you could watch Game of Thrones and just like leave the last season out. And you'll have like a good experience. I mean, there are people that are going to argue that the previous two seasons also began to lose their way, but maybe a little bit. But there are some, there are some incredibly iconic television moments within those two seasons. but I can remember accidentally happening upon Game of Thrones because it's so long ago now that we were, my parents still lived, well, I can't even remember if my dad was alive or dead, but we were definitely still in the house that I grew up in
Starting point is 00:29:22 and I was back for Christmas, I think, of whatever year. And season one of Game of Thrones had finished already, but I had heard nothing about it. And I was up in my, literally my childhood bedroom, but in the modern day we had cable in every room which seems so normal probably to you people but the ability to watch cable in your bedroom was really quite the novelty so I was I was an adult in my childhood bed being like wow I wish I could have watched cable when I was a kid in this room you know but anyway I cracked on Game of Thrones I think when I had jet lag you know so I was like
Starting point is 00:30:00 waking up at the crack of dawn as I always do when I come back from Ireland to go to the states and I remember at the beginning thinking, like, I'm just not into this fantasy bullshit. And then the last thing that happens in episode one, you're like, well, wait, excuse me, wait a cotton pick and minute here. I think we got something special. And there's a lot of pretty sexy people banging sort of fantasy medieval porn here, soft porn. And I got sucked in.
Starting point is 00:30:32 And I got so sucked. in that when I finished season one, I read all the books. And actually, I now can date it because it was definitely after my dad died that I watched that because, so I think it was Christmas 2011, because immediately after that, I went to London for three months in 2012 to just literally, I was going to work on a new show, but not in Ireland. I was trying to just expand out my, my comedy horizon. So I did three months living in Queens Park in London. And I actually read Game of Thrones on my iPhone. It was the first book that I ever read on my phone. And I remember often reading it on the tube while I was in London during those three months. So Christmas 2011, I happened upon
Starting point is 00:31:19 Game of Thrones. And then 2012, I read all the books. So I became a total Game of Thrones nerd. And I, I enjoyed the series, obviously, but I spoiled a lot of the series because I read the book. But I didn't mind. I wanted to see how they did all those things, especially the Red Wedding and all these amazing moments, which are just so shocking. And obviously, you wanted to see how it differed from the books, and it's well documented, various different characters, like what happens with Caitlin Stark and different people and how that's a little bit different. And then some other characters that just like are more important in the later books that just literally are not in Game of Thrones. and then Game of Thrones goes beyond the books anyway.
Starting point is 00:32:05 And, I mean, some would say that's when it began to lose its way, which, you know, partially true, but 100%, they rush the ending. So anyway, can you separate the series from the ending? I think in the case of Game of Thrones, there's enough work before the ending. And, you know, really, when you want to break it down, it wasn't so much that the ending was bad per se. It was just that they rushed the whole thing. so you had this very sort of slow journey from season one until the final season just like it took
Starting point is 00:32:37 such a long time and all these characters develop at such a snail's pace you know you just you spend ages with area in the you know in the place of the faceless man and all these you know and then suddenly it's just like now fucking fast forward we're going to chuck through all this story that's been building up forever. And we're just going to fucking finish it off, like as if suddenly we're just getting the fucking bullet points, you know? We went from like a fucking full novel, a series to just like somebody just took the outline and just fucking, you know, cranked it out like a fucking storyboard of a fucking outline. So anyway, Game of Thrones. Great series, but be ready to be disappointed. You know?
Starting point is 00:33:27 And if you can handle that, I think it's worth it. And we still wait for the last book or another book, 15 years now, whatever it was, since he wrote the last one. And probably it's never going to come. So what are you going to do? What are you going to do? Anyway, thank you very much for that. It needed to be said, guys, I'm going to talk to you about Osea. now you've probably heard Hannah talking about OSCEA before but what she probably hasn't told you
Starting point is 00:34:00 is that the OSCEA that she put in our bathroom is disappearing a lot faster than the amount of times she's putting it on her body because I have become 100% addicted to OSCEA you we may have joked about it on the pod before but actually I get much drier skin than Hannah and The winter is the absolute worst, especially in these New York apartments because the heating systems are like insane. So I really need a good body moisturizer and especially, you know, I'm a little older than Hannah. It feels very nice to get lovely moisturization just, you know, on your face and the skin below your neck. It's so nice. So I recommend using Ocea's Underea algae body butter.
Starting point is 00:34:57 It leaves your skin unbelievably soft and smooth. After you have your shower, you slather on a layer of undaria algae body butter. As you massage it in, take a deep breath and savor the uplifting citrus scent. It's a full body a moment. Now, I'm not saying that your boyfriends and your husbands are allowed. to use your Osea without your permission, but maybe I'm saying that you need to get your man into it too. It's incredible. Undaria Alki body butter is not your typical body butter. It's made with ingredients normally reserved for your face, which honestly, before I met Hannah, I didn't really
Starting point is 00:35:39 understand, you know, how much more care is required for your face. I was just slapping on kind of a guy. But they're taking the care that you need for your face and the putting it into your body butter. They have underea seaweed and seramides. It transforms dry, creppy skin to smooth, soft, and supple skin. So treat yourself to clean, clinically tested skincare from Osea. And right now, we have a special discount just for our listeners. Get 10% off your first order sitewide with code burn, B-E-R-N at Oseaamalaboo.com. That's O-S-E-A-M-A-L-I-B-U. guys i just love telling you about hero bread because i'm a bread guy uh but i'm on quite a good diet at the moment i'm losing a lot of weight uh and so i need to know that i'm not getting any you know

Starting point is 00:37:08 You know, despite being on my diet, I like jam. So I'm a big fan of a bagel, cream cheese, and then jam on top. You know I'm a sweet and savory guy. The bread for toasting is great, too. I mean, listen, it's basically about getting. bread into your diet, guilt-free. I've mentioned it before. Really big fan of a breakfast burrito in the air fryer. Starting point is 00:38:11 I mean, it's been a game changer for Hannah and I. Hannah, very picky about mattresses. Pickier than me, but I'm also one of these people who didn't quite understand the importance of a mattress. But when you switch to a good mattress, like our helix mattress, and by the way, I think I've told you this before, but I'm going to tell you again,
Starting point is 00:38:29 you know, it's not a humble brag that we have two houses, but we had a helix mattress in one place and not in the other. And the difference was so immense that I insisted that we now have a helix mattress in both houses. So I can tell you right now
Starting point is 00:38:42 that once you sleep on a helix mattress, it's going to be hard to go to another one. I play golf, and I was having a lot of problems. with my neck. And, you know, you really can't underestimate how much what you're sleeping on can affect, like, how your body feels. When I switched, I just had overall better sleep, better feeling in my body. And also for me, and maybe this is unscientific. But I just like that feeling of when you get into the bed and you're just like, yes, yes. And we travel all the time.
Starting point is 00:39:17 So I'm always in like other mattresses, and you know yourself when you get into a mattress and you're like, nah. But when you get into a Helix mattress, it is just feels perfect. They've really got other cool features where you can, they have a wearable device that can give you data about your sleep. And there's really just a lot of cool stuff when you get a Helix mattress. So go to helix.com slash burn. and right now they have a March Madness Sale from March 3rd to March 27th you can get 20% off site wide 20% off site wide for their March Madness Sale until March 27th that's helix.com slash burn for the March Madness Sale 20% off sitewide helix sleep.com slash burn now here's one I've never
Starting point is 00:40:12 heard of. And this could be, this could be, now I don't even know, but this could this be like the winner of the episode of just like one that a lot of us have never heard of. That turns out to be a great series because I'm always on the hunt for ones like this. Hey, Hannah and Dads, love you guys so much. Dads, you've been killing it with the solo episodes. Um, but my favorite show of all time, I literally tell anyone who will listen is white collar. I feel like it doesn't get the hype that it deserves. I love White Collar. Like, I was obsessed with that show all throughout high school.
Starting point is 00:40:52 And, like, obviously, you knew that Neil Caffrey was never going to get caught, but just something about, like, the adrenaline of, like, I don't know, it was just so good. And the actors were phenomenal. And Neil Caffrey will always be my crush, even though he. He's gay in real life. And I think happily married. But yeah, that's just like a show that will go down in history for me. I love it so much.
Starting point is 00:41:21 Wow. I love it. I mean, I can promise you of all the ones that we've listened to and I said I haven't seen, I am going to try a white collar. And listen, if the wreck ends up being bad, so be it. But how fun it. I have never even heard of white collar. I've never even heard of it.
Starting point is 00:41:40 so I'm very excited um you reminded me of a show that I really got into about 12 or 13 years ago when again I had like exhausted a couple of the classics uh which was the shield and what reminded me of it as you said about the anxiety or whatever of wondering will they get caught like there is something about those shows where like they're always on the edge of everything falling apart you know breaking bed was like that. But anyway, the Shield. The Shield is a series that definitely went on too long because it did at times start to feel repetitive. But the characters were fucking incredible, you know? And it's been so long now. I can't even remember the names of the characters. And there's one actor in it that's now really doing like a lot. And I forget his
Starting point is 00:42:34 fucking name, but he's really in a lot of shit these days. Um, uh, and, I think he might even be in this season of the White Lotus. But anyway, that doesn't matter. I forgot his name, that actor. Oh, God, it's like on the tip of my tongue. But anyway, the shield, I'm going to watch this, white collar. But the shield is the recommendation that comes from me that I was reminded of by this. And I feel like the shield is significantly long enough ago that it's probably under the
Starting point is 00:43:04 radar for a lot of particularly burnophone listeners. So if you like a police procedural, that's like kind of about corruption, bad cops, but good characters, the shield will keep you going for quite a long time. And I remember, because I remember the majority of the time I watched The Shield, I was actually in the house across the street from where I am now, because I'm in my house now in Rialta, but I used to live like diagonally across the street. And I can just remember being up in the main bedroom of that house, watching the shield on my computer and just like thinking this is not good for me because like I'm just so fucking anxious. But like you know when a TV show makes you that anxious, you're like,
Starting point is 00:43:48 this is good, man. I am invested. Because like there were times where I was like, I'd be like, I need to stop watching this because I'm fucking uptight, you know, but it was good. You know, so that's my, that's my recommendation. By the way, I'm going to do a couple of other, my own recommendations at the end of the episode, just ones that didn't come up that I, that I think worth the watch. But anyway, thanks. I can't wait to watch white collar. It sounds, it sounds fun. And, you know, we will see. We will see. Hi, Ann And Des. So for someone who has like an obsessive personality, this is such a loaded question because I've been obsessed with so many shows. But I think Orange is the New Black, I have to say, takes the cake for me from start to finish.
Starting point is 00:44:35 so good it has so many good like messages about the real world that's represented in the show also honorable mentioned severance it might be too early to tell but i think that severance is one of the best shows i've ever watched like truly and i know it's still early but you know those are my thoughts love you guys yes well um obviously i'm i'm very happy with the sort of extra little severance mentions that are coming through but orange is the new black was was one that faded on me but the first two or three seasons i can't remember how far i made it but i really really enjoyed it and let's not forget that one of the great things about oranges the new black was it was predominantly female cast and um it was it was like riveting and i really really enjoyed
Starting point is 00:45:35 Orange is the New Black, thought the collection of characters were incredible. One of the actors has since totally gone off a rocker, but that's neither here nor there. Worth a watch 100%, get to the end. That I can't say, if it's worth it or not, because I didn't make it myself. But it wasn't so much that, like, you know, I just, I think I just never got, I never kept watching. And I can't even remember why, but I do know. that it was must see TV for me for at least two seasons, possibly three. And just like fascinating, you know, so much good stuff. And so many, like, because the drama was exceptional, but the comedy was great too. And it was, it was just awesome. Um, so great
Starting point is 00:46:24 recommendation. Um, great to remind me. I kind of forgot, I actually forgotten about oranges the new black, which is, uh, which is, you know, strange. Because it really is, is like, it's kind of part of that peak TV era, I feel. All right, let's go for something that matters. Hi, Hannah and Des. So I think the best TV show of all time is Peaky Blinders. Will you need to use subtitles to understand what they're saying? Yes, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:46:56 But then you're also technically reading. So you can say you read six books instead of watched six seasons of something. I think the show has something for everyone. there's violence, there's politics, there's romance, there's family drama, not a boring moment in sight, amazing acting, amazing cinematography, and music. And to top it all off, they threw in Killian Murphy being the absolute sexiest character in the world for all the girlies and the gays. So I think it's a perfect piece of media. I will accept zero criticisms of it, and I think it's a damn shame that it didn't win more awards, especially Killian's performance as Tommy Shelby.
Starting point is 00:47:39 Love you guys. Thanks. Wow, that was an NPR level breakdown of Peaky Blinders. That was like you're in the business of reviewing shows. Just a great breakdown. So thank you. I think it's no secret that I've known Killian for a long time. We were in college together, and we first met doing a play called Observe the Sons of Ulster Mark towards the Somme in the U. University College Cork Drama Society in the autumn of 1995,
Starting point is 00:48:09 aging myself. But anyway, so I actually, I remember, I literally in 2012, I said I was in London. I was actually staying with Killing in that time. And I remember him saying at that time that he really felt that the good scripts were in television. And he was, he was hoping, he was just beginning to talk about that. And I couldn't have imagined how amazing that TV show would become, you know, and just like what a great character Tommy Shelby would be, but also just like the world that they created. Because obviously, again, it's basically a gangster show, but you know, you get used to sort of certain types of gangster shows. And over the years, like British gangster stuff, like it had like okay so there was the guy richy shit but those were always just films long before like
Starting point is 00:49:07 the recent stuff that he made into a series but the guy richy stuff was like British gangster stuff and then there was the craze when I was younger um but yeah you just you never got as much like particularly mass market uh British gangster stuff and uh so it was just nice to see a sort of a a kind of a family crime drama with all this extra stuff around it, a World War I and, you know, the PTSD of these men coming back from war, just Bamingham, you know, and the sort of darkness of British cities, you know, after the industrial revolution. And obviously, I think one of the great things about Peeky Blinders is just the atmosphere
Starting point is 00:49:56 that they create. I mean, you mentioned it in your, when you dialed in about the cinematography, but it was, there was an eeriness there that wasn't, you know, that was just told visually, that was very satisfying. And the music was, was a big part of that. And, you know, there's really, like, not that many series throughout my lifetime, where they just never got the music wrong ever. So, I mean, it's been amazing. over the years about how Peeky Blinders became a big hit in the States, because, you know, originally it was a BBC series, you know, and it actually began sort of before the dominance of the streamers, but luckily for Peaky Blinders as a cultural phenomenon, the streaming era
Starting point is 00:50:41 became dominant long before the Peaky Blinders journey was done. So by the time Peeky Blinders was finished, I mean, it was, it's really one of the great series of the streaming era, which is, it's it's it's it's it's baffling to think that you know when it was started as a BBC draw I mean the standards are high on the BBC you know so uh and like for a long time there was like BBC America and people would find good British stuff on BBC America but like Peaky Blinders fucking well transcended to people finding it on BBC America I mean it really became one of the one of the main shows um and you know just just on a personal note when you mentioned about Peaky Blinders not getting awards.
Starting point is 00:51:23 Well, actually, until very recently, obviously, because Killian finally won a best actor Oscar. I felt that his genius as an actor was kind of unawarded for a lot of his career. And I think within the industry, there's been an acknowledgement of that he is a special kind of actor, not just because he has this incredible look, but the dedication to the craft is,
Starting point is 00:51:50 immense, you know? And he is, he is somebody that made a lot of decisions throughout his career based on, like, wanting to work on projects that, you know, he felt had artistic merit, you know, and not like in a way where he's, like, pretentious, you know, he really cares, you know, like, you're talking about somebody who takes this thing very seriously. And I feel that a lot of that dedication was a little bit unrewarded, uh, unquestion. Uh, acknowledged even, but not now, not these days. And I think that's wonderful. And I do think that Peeky Blinders kind of helped that. I think people finally, I think that's what Peaky Blinders made him kind of a household name. And then the Oscar made him sort of like an industry icon.
Starting point is 00:52:44 So Peaky Blinders, for those that haven't watched it, well worth to watch. My mother, God rest her. She got into that too in the end. But she was the first person that said I had to watch with subtitles. And I do think that that makes a difference. By the way, shout out to my mom. I forgot to mention this on Game of Thrones. So one of the special things about Game of Thrones for me was that my mother was really into Game of Thrones. And we didn't watch it together always because I was like obviously away a lot. But we always discussed it after every episode. I was in the world. So that was kind of our thing, Game of Thrones, myself and my mother. And so in Myanmar, I have a joke, me and mama the show being about my mom. I have a joke about
Starting point is 00:53:29 grief and how grief can be triggered in different ways. And this is, by the way, a hundred percent true story. But my mother died March 19th of 2019. And if you know that Game of Thrones, the final season and Game of Thrones began in April of 2019. But literally, because I didn't, I was, my mother died and we did the funeral. And then I had to, I literally had to go to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. I delayed my show by two days, but, and I should have canceled the whole thing. But anyway, I buried my mother and then I fucking traveled all the way across the world. I had to go via Ireland to pick up my shit.
Starting point is 00:54:05 And then I went to Melbourne and I was a fucking wreck. But anyway, within that sort of seven days where I was in the States after my mom died, dealing with everything, the promo. started for the final season of Game of Thrones, which we fucking couldn't wait for. But the first time I saw that promo was like literally two days after my mother died. And I was like staying in her apartment where she died. And the fucking promo for Game of Thrones came on. And it cut me like a knife, the pain of it. Because my mother was never going to watch the final season of Game of Thrones. Like our fucking thing. And she was never going to see it. And,
Starting point is 00:54:45 I use that as an example of me and mama of just like, like, just grief just hits you, different triggers. And the Game of Thrones thing was a real trigger for me. And the joke I say, which is also true, is, but it's funny how things can change because a year later, I was like, wow, my mother never had to watch the final season of Game of Thrones. That lucky bitch died thinking that Game of Thrones was the best series ever made. She fucking never had to live with the disappointment of how fucking shit the last season was. That's a joke for me, a mama, for me to you. Obviously, I'm saying this into the dead energy of my box room in Rialto,
Starting point is 00:55:24 but I do think it's funny, but I also think it's a nice little insight into grief, which what would an episode would Desby if he didn't touch on grief just for a moment? So my mother loved peeky blinders, but she did have to watch with subtitles. So great shout in every way. I look forward to everyone's sort of opinions, by the way, on some of these recommendations. I have one listed here, as I say, good ones, which I think was just like a quick rundown. which might repeat some of them, but let's just play it anyway. Hi, Hannah. Hi, Des, a long-time listener, first-time caller. I would say that the best TV series is House MD. It's incredible, intelligent storytelling and many a moral dilemma, or Des, as you say, dilemma.
Starting point is 01:00:01 I would also shout out Hannibal as kind of like a similar wax. but much darker and lots more gore. I know, Hannah, you love a serial killer series. And most recently, Hack. It's on HBO Max, and it's funny, and it's smart, and it's women-led, and I watched all three seasons in, like, less than two weeks. So, yeah, that's all I got. Love you.
Starting point is 01:00:34 Bye. Great recommendations. I actually, I don't know what, I think I just say good ones because there was a few good ones in there. I actually never watched Hannibal and I nearly started that a couple of times and I don't know why I didn't watch it because I've had, I've had people recommend that before. So that was a great list. I haven't watched any of the three that you mentioned was a House MD Hannibal and Hack. So, or was that hacks? Were you saying hacks? Is that the one that Hannah loves? Um, if it was, was it, was it, was it, was it, was it, was hacks that you said? Well, if, I think it was hacks, actually. Um, sorry, I have actually. That, that's great. And that's a great one for comedians, because it's very like inside baseball. Anyway, great recommendations. You reminded me of a series that I love that got canceled, which was inexplicable. And why can I not remember the name? So I think everyone will know what I'm talking about.
Starting point is 01:01:31 great series on Netflix about the kind of birth of serial killer profiling in the FBI. And I fucking, I cannot remember for the life of me. I can't remember the fucking name for the life of me. I was so good. But you'll know the one I'm talking about. It has that kind of gruff, great actor who's like with this like younger guy who's like really, you know, believes in the psychological profiling of these killers. And a lot of people don't believe it. And then they hide I think they find it was it like a lawyer or or a psychiatrist a woman that gets involved with them and the trio of them just like you know trying to find a killer it's fucking awesome and they canceled it and it was so good that was actually one of my like
Starting point is 01:02:19 that's up there man why the fuck can i not right it's so annoying that i'm blanking on the name um but i think people will know what i'm talking about and if not just like look up Netflix series about FBI serial profiles that was canceled after two seasons, I think, with two male characters, two male leads and a female lead. And you'll find it. And it's fucking awesome. And so I highly recommend. And I feel like I might have ended up getting the recommendation of Hannibal when that one got canceled because I was looking for other series like that. So highly, highly, highly recommend that one. I'll get, I'll do my, I'll do other, my other list at the end but let me go back to the dialers
Starting point is 01:03:01 for one or two more but we'll play out the ones that I didn't that I didn't play people love Gilmore Girls let me play this Hi Hannah and Des long time Giggler, long time listener
Starting point is 01:03:20 to the pod I don't know what it is for me but my favorite show would be Gilmore Girls I have an unhealthy obsession with the show I have probably rewatched the entire series at least 20 times. It has come to the point now where my boyfriend, who's never formally sat down and watched it with me, knows all the characters and the plots.
Starting point is 01:03:42 Team Jess all the way, although I know that's a very controversial take, but whatever your stance is, just I am anti-Deen, and that's fine. But, yeah, I don't know what it is. That is my favorite show. Second to that would probably be New Girl. but love the pod love you guys bye
Starting point is 01:04:02 amazing I love just hearing somebody so passionate about something that I've never seen and I missed that whole phenomenon but I wanted to play it because people were recommending it so if anyone was a holdout on that but I do want to quickly go to one that I've never heard of and you know
Starting point is 01:04:21 I just like these ones because these you know this could be something that people haven't heard of Queen of the South. It's so good. It keeps you on your toes the whole time. It's another one of those cartel shows. Teresa Mendoza is that bitch. Also, my number one favorite thing about this series is that it actually has a happy ending, which for some reason with our favorite series, like we never get happy endings. I don't know if it's just because so much shit happens in the series that they just can't give us a good ending, but you get it with Queen of the South. So you should definitely. give it a watch. I loved it. Amazing. I have to check that out. You did remind me that I absolutely love the Narcos series. I mean, some were better than others, but I loved Narco season one and two about Pablo Escobar.
Starting point is 01:05:13 And I enjoyed all the Narcos Mexico. And it also kind of like weirdly made me just like I started Googling the shit out of like Mexican cartel leaders. So, you know, this is great kind of. reminds you, like, of all the great TV. But I think I'm going to try a Queen of the South because I definitely went through a phase where I was like really into like drug cartel series. And I'm really can't wait till they make Narcos Dublin. And they, they sort of follow the journey of the Kinahan's. I have a, I have a general announcement throughout all of Ireland that if they make Narcos Dublin and I am not cast as Christy Kinhan Senior, I will
Starting point is 01:05:51 fucking go crazy. Because if you, if anybody wants to Google Christy Kinahan Senior, I can definitely play him, you know? I mean, I'm not saying we're exactly the same, but we have a lot of similar features. And I can absolutely deal with fucking Dublin accent. I fucking live down the rail from where they're fucking from. I'm just literally fucking 10 minutes walk from the out of a bond. So don't even fucking say, I can't play it.
Starting point is 01:06:12 But anyway, it doesn't matter. I'm not fucking auditioning here, you know, but I can definitely threaten to kill you in a Dublin accent. So anyway, let me go through some of my list of things that I think are awesome that didn't come up, that I kind of forget about. So actually, there was one series that Hannah and I, like, we were just stuck for something to watch and we took a risk, like literally just a random click.
Starting point is 01:06:38 And it was way better than I was expecting. I'm not saying it's one of the best of all time, but just a fucking good watch. And it's only one season. I think it's called The Serpent about a kind of a con man. I believe it starts in Thailand. And it's a real story, actually. You can look up the guy.
Starting point is 01:06:54 But very enjoyable, actually. Very enjoyable. So check that out. Now, this one that I'm about to say is one of my big recommends. Like one of my favorite series of the last 10 years, and that is dark on Netflix. It is German. It is subtitled. And it is a sci-fi puzzle box series, our new term.
Starting point is 01:07:21 and very complicated, but I think they stuck the landing. I'm not saying it's the most satisfying landing of all time, but considering how complicated that series was, exceptional, 100% a show that you have to concentrate more than the average show. I'd probably say on a scale of 1 to 10, this is a 10. This is a DefCon 5 fucking level of concentration. But so satisfying.
Starting point is 01:07:50 like fucking bonkers absolutely bonkers and it just gets deeper and deeper into complicated stuff but just so cool like so dark would be my big recommendation that I feel like a lot of people didn't watch um I'm a big silo person I mean I'm a big Apple TV person as you can tell um I loved silo another series where I watched season one and I couldn't wait so I read all the books. So I now know everything that happens in Silo, and I enjoyed season two. But season two is not as good as season one. I don't think that's controversial. But after reading the books, I did think that they would struggle to tell the story because the story, you know, it's complicated. And I knew that television wouldn't allow them to be in his, you know,
Starting point is 01:08:40 I just knew that television wouldn't allow them to tell the story as the way that it's told in the book. So they have some big decisions to make. But I have to say, I still enjoyed season two. But I did, I felt that after having read the books, I can see the dilemma, the dilemma that they're in. And so definitely worth to watch. Season one fucking incredible. By the way, speaking of great season ones that the rest isn't worth Westworld, season one, fucking incredible television. Couldn't even get through season two, a load of rubbish. And from what I can read, the rest of it just wasn't worth it. But God, season one was fucking incredible. I enjoyed that so much. Incredible first season of television. I loved Escape from
Starting point is 01:09:30 Danamara, which is just a limited series. Of course, I've become aware of it again, because I kind of forgot when I watched it that Ben Stiller directed it, but I think it was his first television series that he directed. Ben Still, a very underrated director. You know, he directed the cable guy, which was a movie that didn't get the props that it deserved. And this isn't just coming from the severance love. I just think that like Ben Stiller, perhaps, because he's such a great comic actor, like if you listen to the Severance podcast with him and Adam Scott, you will see just how intelligent and thoughtful and really like artistically genius he is. Escape from Dan Amora, which was actually, it's very rare that you watch a series about a thing that
Starting point is 01:10:06 really just happened. It's about a prison break. I won't say much else, but very enjoyable limited series. Speaking of limited series, another one that just fucking blew me away was Chernobyl. Chernobyl just fucking awesome HBO limited series. Couldn't get enough of it. Pandemic, I think I watch that. God, they're all coming into my mind now. The fucking pandemic, you know, just like eight television. But Escape from Dan Amora and Chernobyl are too great.
Starting point is 01:10:38 I think they're both HBO, I think, or Max series. Really good, really good. Benicio del Toro and Escape from Danamora. incredible performance. But Chernobyl, who, especially the world we're living in today. Chernobyl is just a good reminder of the dark times of the Soviet Union. And of course, my age, I remember Chernobyl and the fallout from that. So really good, really well made. Also, another series that kind of went under the radar during the pandemic that I loved was, God, now I have, oh, caliphate, which I think,
Starting point is 01:11:18 Caliphate was on Netflix, but maybe it was on Showtime. Caliphate was fucking dark, but man, it was good. Swedish television series, but they, they, they, they, they, they, like, there's not many shows where you, you see what it was like. It's, obviously, it's somebody's interpretation of what it might have been like to live within the caliphate of ISIS when it was, you know, when it was like, like a funk, quote, unquote, functioning society. Um, um, I guess it was a Lepo. I can't remember anyway. Now, listen, I'm showing my likes here.
Starting point is 01:11:53 You know, I like a lot of fucking intense shit. So I'm sorry, all my recommendations are super intense. But Caliphate was fucking edgier seat stuff. I mean, God. Just like incredible television. Which then I watched Tehran. But Tehran wasn't as good as Caliphate. But it was enjoyable, though.
Starting point is 01:12:13 Tehran, which I think was Glenn Close, but also enjoyable. And, I mean, if we're talking about it. great season ones, is Homeland Season 1 one of the best seasons of television ever made? I mean, I think it is. I mean, I watched a lot of the rest of it, but it just, you know, I just feel like they season, I just feel like, you know, there was just, there was longer to go with the basic storyline that they had in season one, and I feel like they rushed out of it. But anyway, um, season one of the, excuse me, one of the great seasons of television, It took me a decade to realize that soul was Enigo Montoyo from the Princess Bride,
Starting point is 01:12:57 which, you know, is like one of the great comedies of my childhood. And I did, I watched the whole of Homeland, having not recognized him one bit. So, Homeland, season one, incredible series. I'm going to go through a few more before we finish up. Three body problems I really enjoyed season one. only been season one so far. Complicated sci-fi. You know, Apple TV really got me into sci-fi. I think foundation I kind of enjoy too, but I'm not recommending foundation. You know, it's just, I don't know. I think I enjoyed it, but I'm not recommending foundation. But I really enjoyed three
Starting point is 01:13:38 body problems, but it is complicated, though. And we'll see with season two. And I may be biased because there's a lot of sort of like Chinese connections to three body problems. In fact, it is actually a Chinese book. I tried to watch the Chinese version of Three Body Problem, but I found it tough to watch. But anyway, I really enjoyed season one of Three Body Problem. So do check that out. And I think, I mean, I kind of think that's it.
Starting point is 01:14:09 I got like a thousand things running through my mind. So we'll call it a day there with the recommendations. I did say that I would. talk about the ending of the Sopranos. So I'll just quickly talk about it. And then we'll be out. And then I'll have Chris play out a couple of the other recommendations that you guys sent in. But for those that watch The Sopranos, this is why I, and I may have actually talked about this on the pod before now that I think of it. This is why I think the Sopranos ending is one of the best endings ever in television. I actually think that's what happens when you die.
Starting point is 01:14:50 I think it's just lights out. Now, this might be a little dark for everybody, okay? And whatever you believe happens when you die, I respect it. As I say in me and mama, the show about my mom, the one thing we know for sure is that we don't know. So whatever you think happens at death, run with it. You know, my parents believed in heaven. I don't believe in heaven.
Starting point is 01:15:12 I actually think that this is all we have. This life that we're living now is our one chance, which is very, you know, some people like, oh, that's very morbid. But for me, it's not. It's actually quite motivating, you know, to just be like, oh, shit. Like, I don't, I don't have a second chance. I don't believe in reincarnation. I like a lot of Buddhist teaching, but I don't believe in reincarnation.
Starting point is 01:15:34 I believe that this is it. And it's frightening, right, to think that like, oh, shit, one day, you know, you know, it's just going to be nothing. And then people say, like, oh, that's so depressing. And it's like, well, it's not because it's just nothing. It's not nothing for eternity. It's, it's no awareness. It's, it's, it's, it's the, the, actually, I, I, I, I, I heard Bill Burr say something recently, which I thought was fucking amazing, which was something that was said to him, which was, he, he said, somebody said to him, you know the way, you know the way it was before they were born. You know the way you have no awareness of your life before your life. And he's like, yeah, he's like, yeah,
Starting point is 01:16:13 it's like that. And like, I just thought that was so funny, uh, because it's such a nice way of being like, yeah, it probably is like that, you know, uh, that it's, it's just nothing. Um, so the only thing that you have that exists after you die is what you, what you fucking give to this world, whether that's your own children, your own art, um, your relationship. ships, you know, the people that you touched helped. This is it, right? And so, as people that were watching the Sopranos and like investing in these characters, we want the fallout from what I think was an assassination. But again, open to interpretation, which is so awesome, right? We want the fallout of that. We want to watch the horror in Camilla's face, you know. We want to, we want to see their reaction. We want to see the fallout from the loss of Tony Soprano, you know, we, like, we want all that. But it's really Tony's story. And, you know, when you yell cut, like, that's the end of the Sopranos. So the Sopranos in itself, like, if you think of the Sopranos, like, if you think of the Sopranos, like a living thing,
Starting point is 01:17:36 this organism that evolved to this moment, it's like when the pen stops, when the camera stops, it's over, you know? And that's life. So on so many levels, you know, from the level of just like this piece of art is over to this life is over. This is what happens at the end of existence. So that's why I thought that it was an incredible ending, but that's just my interpretation, you know? And I know in a way it was unsatisfying, but what's satisfying is that it really took me a long time to come to that interpretation. And so I think just like if you can manage to eat the ice cream slowly, it's just so nice to just savor it. Like I almost feel like the Sopranos was like still there on my ice cream comb for quite a long time. For quite a long
Starting point is 01:18:31 afterwards like literally just like festering in my mind growing like a chia pet you know it just continued to entertain me just like in my fucking brain i think that's pretty awesome you know because a lot of stuff just leaves you cold in the end you get so invested and then you're just like that's it you know where's like the sopranos was like and obviously there was controversy people thought their tv was busted and all that i get it but like even that's iconic you know it's iconic to be like you know remember that time when all of society thought that there was something wrong with their TV like there's just so much about that that was amazing and just a funny anecdote not that long ago you know because you know if you listen to me I I joke a lot about
Starting point is 01:19:21 how much I like pineapple and pizza like about nine months ago I was in the pizza place next to the comedy seller and Sylvia walked in, you know, from the Sopranos. And I, I, he ordered a pineapple slice. And I was like, oh man, I was like, you know, it's interesting. It's controversial. And he was like, I know. And I'm like, yeah, man, I was like, I love pineapple and pizza, but like people trying to tell me I don't like it. Like, like, you know. And so we fucking discussed our love for pineapple and pizza, which for me, I mean, you couldn't get a more iconic moment than talking to like this, I mean, I don't even know is the Italian American in real life, but I know that he played this, you know, iconic Italian
Starting point is 01:20:11 American character. And here we are discussing how people's hatred for pineapple and pizza is nonsense. So, um, so anyway, that's my thoughts on the Sopranos. Thank you for your, your TV wrecks. Um, I, I, I have more thoughts, which I now can't even. fucking remember. I had so many things going on my head. I should have taken notes. But I think that's a, that's a thorough episode. You know, the DES solo episodes are always a little longer for, for whatever reason, just like talking to myself. So we'll be back next week. Next week is the last week where I will be here. So next week will 100% be the last week where I'm on my own. And we'll be back with Hannah, which is good for you guys. But it's particularly good for me,
Starting point is 01:20:58 because we've been a part for quite a long time now. So I'm looking forward to getting back to Hannah and looking forward to doing the pod together for you guys. But I really appreciate the feedback that you guys give while I'm on my own. And don't forget to comment in the Spotify. That's been great fun. And, you know, like and subscribe and all that stuff. And, you know, we'll just try to keep Burnaphone growing.
Starting point is 01:21:25 And whatever happens to Burnaphone in the future, future, whatever iteration it becomes, it always relies on you guys and the support that you give. And listen, you know, on an episode like this, which is really driven by you guys, driven by the dialers, dialing in, I'm just so grateful for the messages because it's, I think it just really helps to, you know, it just creates a great dynamic and I love hearing from you guys. And you're always so thoughtful and articulate. So thank you so much and we'll see you guys next week. So, Hanna, what's up, Dez?
Starting point is 01:22:15 My girlfriend, listen to you guys. You guys are so, so funny. Yeah, best TV series. It's got to be entourage solely because of Johnny drama and Ari. Best line, there's one where Terl goes, wow, drama, you swore in your career, and drama goes, I had my balls crossed. It's so good, so many good celebrity cameos. Tom Brady, I mean, it's just, oh, it's so electric, it is so, so funny. All the characters are so funny.
Starting point is 01:22:49 But yeah, we love you guys. Thanks. How am I your brother? Easy. And if you haven't seen it, you need to. watch it. It's so much better than friends or the office. Well, the office is really funny, but how much your mother is great because it has so many life lessons in it. But yeah, I love that show. Marshall's my favorite. Hi, Des and Hannah. I love you guys. New Time Caller, Period.
Starting point is 01:23:18 But I think that the best series has got to be Seinfeld. I know you're probably going to get a bunch of these, but Seinfeld on top forever. Okay, bye. Hi, Hannah. Hi, Des. Love you both so much. I still to this day, I think Shameless is one of the greatest shows of all time, even though the series finale, how they ended it, is horrible. And I'm not going to spoil it, but it came out during COVID times. And I guess maybe a little spoiler alert. They did lean into COVID a little too much, maybe. But I do think it's one of the greatest shows of all time. The writers, they apparently, um, My research is just as good as Hannah's from, like, an Instagram post. But apparently the winter seasons are supposed to be more, like, dramatic and dark. And then the summer seasons are supposed to be more comical, so, like, and lighter. And so if you watch it like that, it also is very clear. But anyway, if you haven't watched Nameless all the way through, I highly recommend.
Starting point is 01:24:21 Love you. Bye. Okay, hi, Hannah. Hi, hi, Dez. Love the pod, obviously. just need to say that I think the best television series of all time has to be stranger things I was just in a conversation about this the other day that show quite literally has 60,000 different plot lines all happening at one time and so many that are like unable to be
Starting point is 01:24:46 described to another being if you're going to like sit down and try to describe it to them like each character's plot line has like 67 moving pieces all at once so Yes, I would say that's the most entertaining show of all time, but also, season four of Outer Banks, life-changing. It was one of the best television shows I ever watched in the history of ever. Summer House, my favorite show of all time. I can't. I won't lie. I will not lie.
Starting point is 01:25:15 But yeah, I love you guys so much. Thank you for existing. Bye. Oh, the show that I think about all the time right now is the West Wing. what I wouldn't give for a President Bartlett and C.J. Craig, oh my gosh.
Starting point is 01:25:35 Talk about a will they, won't they romance. It's so good. I've definitely watched the show twice through. Not recently, but maybe. Also, honorable mention for working moms.
Starting point is 01:25:50 Incredible. Hi, Hannah. Hi, guys. Thank you for taking my call. I saw your prompt this week and it really spoke to me and I'm just here to say that the best TV series to have ever existed is Zoe 101. And if you think otherwise, send me your address and I will burn your house down. Thank you.
