Join in at 7705633. Gino, you're here on Conspiracy Theory Thursday.
Starting point is 00:00:25 What's on your mind? Well, I'm 77 years old and when I was a teenager in the 50s and early 60s, I had a conspiracy with the librarian. After I had read my way through the entire catalog of science fiction, she started to bring in other books for me and I'd walk into the library and say, Gino, Gino, this is the latest from Asimov. No one's cracked it yet. You're the first one. And so anybody that wants to know what's going on, Asimov was the most prolific science fiction writer as well as a highly acclaimed technical writer for the science fields. He has more publications, peer- He has more publications,
Starting point is 00:01:05 peer-reviewed publications, than he does science fiction books. And if you want to get a handle on what's going on these days as far as all the changes, please read through the science fiction of Asimov. I think there are 12 books in the Foundation series, starting with the robot series, and going all the way through. And so in the process, he'll take you to one of the 12 planets that have been terraformed, etc. And you see what goes on on one planet where terraforming goes bad. You go to another planet where the entire thing is encased in steel, and it's segregated
Starting point is 00:01:41 into different kinds of people that are doing different kinds of things. And boy oh boy, if you read through that science... I've read through it twice, once when I was a teenager and once in my middle ages, and you get a handle on what's going on in the world today by looking at what an actual scientist is predicting, and you say, oh my goodness, this man, either he could see into the future or his intuition was really tuned. All right, well, either that or else Asimov was just paying attention. What's your overall impression of where, you know, paying attention, you know, he was paid as a scientist to pay attention.
Starting point is 00:02:14 You know how Matt from Grand Special talks about, hey, I'm a stock guy, I'm paid to notice things, you know, that sort of thing, right? And it's amazing how much science fiction comes true if you listen, watch and read. What is your take on the AI revolution? We're still in the baby steps of it. Do you think it's wise to just kind of say hands off for 10 years like they're doing? First of all, I have nothing to say about it because it is what it is and no matter what you try to do to change it, it's going to go where it's going to go because
Starting point is 00:02:45 a human being is a fallen animal and we're going to take it to the weirdest part possible. And I just look at it as, to me, the world is a bottle between good and evil and you got to choose sides and it is binary and who knows, you know, you can take a gun and defend your family. You can also take a gun and assault someone's family. Sure. Sure. AI is AI. I'll tell you what I feel personally, I don't want to touch it right now because I write a lot, I write a lot of essays, and I want to make sure that all that stuff is away from me in my creative process. And then maybe at the end, I'll take it and pop it through AI to see what it has to say about what I'm doing. But I'm trying to really remain authentically human.
Starting point is 00:03:25 That's interesting. Maybe that's where the society is going, and that's why I talk to some of these thought leaders in this issue, because you're having tech bros that are now coming forward and saying, you know, I'm actually involved in this. That was the one in the Axios. Did you read the Axios story a couple of days ago about this? But Axios.com, they had this and one of the leaders in AI actually in the middle of building it is saying, you know, this is really, like I said, it's amazingly powerful and can help many things, but who's going to be working for who ultimately is the question. And when you get something which is so
Starting point is 00:04:13 omnidirectional and able to absorb and reason and move forward, at what point is it essentially electronic consciousness? And we'll do whatever it takes. We'll do whatever it takes. This is like going back to Kubrick's movie back when I was a kid. I was watching that You know 2001 yeah, yeah space odyssey, right? I can't do that how At the binary level of good and evil a person has to have either they have an awakened sense of good and evil in their own self and they can make the choice and they can use the tool without violating their principles or they are without a Core principles and a commitment in their own soul to be one kind of human or another. And those people scare the heck out of me anyway.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Yeah, well maybe what's needed is a prime directive, you know, kind of like of the old Star Trek world, right? Prime directive. And again, the prime directive is only as good as the people's soul that is following the prime directive. Point well taken. All right. Once again, the prime directive. Point well taken. All right.
Starting point is 00:05:05 Once again, the failed humans. Thanks so much. Gino, I always enjoy your call. Thank you for checking in on Conspiracy Theory Thursday. God bless you. All right. God bless you, too. We need it.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Hey, we're going to have a Diner 62 real American quiz. I would like to give you a $20 gift certificate for Diner 62. And then you can get that amazing Diner 62 burger like I had last Friday. Or you can get that amazing Diner 62 burger like I had last Friday. Or you can get the clam chowder, tomorrow's clam chowder Friday. Any of those hearty breakfast and lunch specials, they do it all. It's all delicious. 7705633, if you haven't won it in 60 days, why don't you give it a shot and see if you
Starting point is 00:05:38 can win it next? Multiple choice. We'll dig into that next. This hour of the Bill Myers Show is sponsored by Fontana Roofing. Here KMED in Krantz Pass on 1059 K290 AF Rogue River in South Jackson County on 1067 K-294 AS Ashland. Diner 62 real American quiz. We're talking about some revolutionary war talk, okay? Some
Starting point is 00:06:11 history. And it was today in history, May 29th of 1780. And we go to Kathy with a K. Hey Kathy, how you doing this morning? I'm doing great, thank you. All right, Kathy. It was today, 1780, the treatment of patriot prisoners by British Colonel Tarleton and his loyalist troops led to the coining of a phrase that had come to define British brutality. It was Tarleton's quarter. Now, after the surrender of Charleston, May 12, the 3rd Virginia, commanded by Colonel Abraham Buford, virtually the only organized patriot formation remaining
Starting point is 00:06:45 in South Carolina. Now the British Colonel Tarleton had been given the mission to destroy any resistance to the state. At Waxhaws on the North Carolina border, a cavalry charge by Tarleton's men broke the 350 remaining patriots under Buford. Tarleton and his Tories proceeded to shoot at the Patriots after their surrender, and this is after their surrender, so they surrendered and so they were killing them. The question for this morning is how many Patriots were reportedly killed after they surrendered here. Now remember they started with 350. Were 13 killed,
Starting point is 00:07:20 33 killed, 63 killed, 83 or 113 killed after they surrendered. What do you think? 63. 63 right in the middle. No, it wasn't that, Katherine. Okay, thank you. I appreciate you trying. Let me go to Gary. Gary was a dark time in the Revolutionary War, for sure, and we're talking about either 13, 33, 83, or 113 patriots killed after they surrendered. How many? I'm thinking 13, Bill. You're thinking 13. I'm sorry, it was more than 13. More than 13. Let me go to Ron. Ron is up here next. Hello, Ron. How are you this morning? I'm doing fine. How are you doing? I'm doing fine. Well, you have a 33 and a third, well, you have one third chance of winning this. Okay. So, how many patriots were killed after surrendering?
Starting point is 00:08:13 33, 83 or 113? What do you say? I'm going to guess 83. 83. No, it wasn't that either. Yeah, we're going to keep going on to Lona. Hello, Lona. You have a 50-50 shot here.
Starting point is 00:08:27 OK, 33 or 113 patriots. How many were killed out of 350 after they surrendered? Thirty three. Thirty three. Oh, I'm sorry. We're going right down to the end. Going down to the end. Hi, good morning. Welcome. Good morning, Mr. Jerry. Jerry, 113 or 113? You're the last man standing. No, I bet it's 113 today.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Yeah, that's it. Can you believe that? About one-third of all these people. After sending up the truce flag with an offer to surrender, Tarleton's men attacked, They killed 113 Americans, wounded another 150 out of a total force of just 300 to 350 soldiers. 203 captured. British losses, just 19 men. Although they were routed, the loss actually became a propaganda victory for the Continentals.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Wavering Carolina civilians were terrified of Tarleton, and their loyalist neighbors were now prepared to rally to the Patriot cause So he won the battle so to speak but lost the war is What happened Jerry, you know after this so really something but boy to just kill them all after the hey we quit We surrender we're laying down our arms and then they just did him in anyway Hang on. We're gonna send you to diner 62 on a happier subject there you'll really enjoy that I know for sure. We'll have another diner 62 quiz Monday or Tuesday. Now actually not Monday or Tuesday next week Monday or Tuesday I'm actually taking two days of vacation. Wednesday probably Wednesday when I get back from vacation.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Okay. Sweetwater Sanitation are your experts in the sanitation business with over 20 years of providing septic services in southern Oregon. Sweetwater... Push any fires that may get started. Keep Oregon green. Learn more about wildfire prevention at KeepOregonGreen.org. You're hearing The Bill Meyers Show on 1063 KMED. Streamed on KMED.com and also on Facebook Live. We appreciate that. An event going on in downtown Medford. It's the Open Streets event. And I'm going to just share a little bit of that right now here. Medford Open Streets back this weekend. It's going to happen Saturday from 11 till 4. And they're going to be shutting down apparently they're going to be shutting down West Main Street to West 6th Street,
Starting point is 00:10:46 and North Ivy Street to North Fur Street in downtown Medford, and they'll be featuring food trucks, live music, several participants, including Ashlyn Ariel Arch, the Rogue Valley Mountain Bike Association, Spartan Boxing, a bunch more. And this is interesting. So they're wanting to turn the streets of downtown Medford over for various events. And if you're planning on, if you're, oh by the way they're saying if you're planning on attending the regional health fair at the Expo, a free shuttle service be running from the front street station so you can enjoy both events. Once again, this seems to be looking at the streets of downtown Medford as entertainment
Starting point is 00:11:31 venues. Now, I know everybody does a little bit of this from time to time, but the open streets of course means being closed to transportation. Is that something that sounds good to you? Is that a good thing? Maybe it will help. Maybe it will help trade in downtown Medford. Nobody wants to go to downtown Medford, I guess, because all you do is just drive through it. So if you stop driving through it, will the open streets help? I don't know. But the city also ends up putting in this news release. I'm reading this from a news release, by the way.
Starting point is 00:12:03 It says, help refine the downtown Medford 2040 plan. Now, of course, this has been a big burr under my saddle for quite some time. Over the past year, hundreds of community members have helped shape a long-range vision for downtown, one that reflects the values of our community and outlines real strategies to make it happen. we've launched a final online survey to gather input on the draft recommendations that will shape downtown through 2040. This survey is your opportunity to weigh in before the plan enters the formal adoption process. Question for you this morning. Should an online survey be then considered proper public input? I don't. Where are actual public hearings, not just a meeting of the downtown
Starting point is 00:12:58 Medford 2040 plan? Because what happens when you do the online survey is that there are usually, and I'll take a look and see what that plan looks like, but it's kind of like the mother or the father, and the kid comes to them and says, hey, you know, I would like to do this, and then mom or dad says, well, you could do this, or you could do that, or maybe you could do this third thing. In other words, they pre-choose. It's the predetermined outcome. And of course, the predetermined outcome is,
Starting point is 00:13:28 we know around here, all has to do with a climate-friendly, equitable community. Okay? Anyway, maybe we could talk. I don't know if we're going to have time to talk about it this morning because Charles Hughes Smith will be joining me here in the next few minutes. Minor Davis here. Hello, Dave. It's Conspiracy Theory Thursday. What's on your mind today, huh? They just issued an evacuation order for a fire of juniper at Mount Chester Vista, which I don't know if you know where that is. I'm losing your cell phone a little bit there. You want to try that again?
Starting point is 00:14:06 I said there's a fire at Mount Chester Vista and they've issued evacuation orders to evacuate the area. Thanks for the update. Appreciate that. Is that near you? Well it's on I-5 and it's just before you get into Waiarika on I-5 where they have to pull off. And so it begins in other words is what you're saying the wildfire season? Well it's a waste for me but it's really been the matter of speaking. It puts I-5 in danger. Thanks for letting me know, okay Dave? All right, thanks for letting us know, Dave. 28 minutes after 8. We're going to break for news.
Starting point is 00:14:52 And then poor Charles Hugh Smith, he woke up early. It's like 5.30 in Hawaii. And so we're going to talk about his book, The Mythology of Progress. It's a very thought-provoking book. I've been a big fan of his writing and what he does over on Substack too. And the landfill economy. AI. I think there's a lot to dig it in here and will be a great way to wrap up Conspiracy Theory Thursday. All coming up from the KC...
