Starting point is 00:00:00 This hour of the Bill Meyer Show podcast is proudly sponsored by Klauser Drilling. They've been leading the way in Southern Oregon well drilling for more than 50 years. Find out more about them at Klausor drilling.com. Now more with Bill Meyer. Well, happy post-fireworks and celebration post-firecracker Monday. Of course, I don't know. I think the firecrackers were still going off at my house last night. Only had about two or three booms.
Starting point is 00:00:27 What about your neighbor? Now, let me know. 7705633-770 KMED. Really great 250th anniversary of the nation's founding over the weekend. And D.C., of course, kept things pretty hopping there, although it was a late start, apparently, because of the thunderstorm. Some people were rumoring that this was maybe a cover-up for a bomb threat, no evidence of that.
Starting point is 00:00:51 But things did get pretty humid and had some sprinkles and some rain, and then they ended up doing it late. And between the fireworks festivities going off in my own neighborhood over at, you know, the Boomfest, the final Boomfest over in Central Point, what was going on down in Ashland, what was going on. I don't know. I have to tell you what I was looking in the skies in my Northeast Medford neighborhood. I wasn't so sure that some of the unofficial fireworks displays were rivalring,
Starting point is 00:01:26 rivaling, I should say, the official ones. What about for you, huh? Let me know. 7705-633-770 KMED. Like I mentioned, though, after the weather delay, President Trump ended up posting the nation's largest fireworks display in U.S. history, some 850,000 that had been lit off. And it's pretty impressive, no doubt about that. If there was one criticism, and this is a lot of, I thought the only, well, there's actually two criticisms I would have. I don't know if this had to do with the selection of the music. If it was because they were delaying that the Navy band, because I was watching the national coverage over on Fox. And here it is the fireworks start off.
Starting point is 00:02:15 And they start singing and playing 25 or 6 to 4, the Navy band, right? And I was thinking to myself, all right, it's the 250. 50th anniversary of the United States birthing. And I'm trying to think, what does 25 or 6 to 4, although it's a great song, what does that have to do with, you know, the 250th celebration? I'm just wondering, maybe they already did that a little bit earlier when they did the flyover. I'm not sure how that worked out. And then, okay, they had don't stop believing. That's all right. And then, and then I think finally there was like a patriotic song in there. They're courtesy of the red, white, and blue.
Starting point is 00:02:58 The old Toby Keith song from a post-9-11. Great song. Great song. And they were doing great versions of it. But I don't know. Maybe they were just doing the music as a... I don't know if it was... Maybe it's just about the dancing.
Starting point is 00:03:14 I don't know. But that was what I... That's what I was kind of wondering. It's like, all right. I love 25 or 6 to 4. I just don't see it as a 4th of July Independence Day song. That's just me. though. You can talk to me about it if you want.
Starting point is 00:03:29 7705-633-770K-M-ED. I think the other thing I would have mentioned is there was a couple. I mean, I have to find this story. But you know how Oregon was being all childish and did not send anything to the Great American Fair, you know, the State Fair? They had booth space for 50 of the States, of the United States, all 50 of them. and the United States, or I'm sorry, state of Oregon said that, now it's too expensive and it's being too partisan.
Starting point is 00:04:03 All right. Now, this is the state that wastes money on absolutely everything, but we didn't send anybody there to the state fair. We were one of a handful of states that didn't do that for last week. And in my opinion, that kind of made us look petty. That's what I thought it made Oregon look petty. But what I did find interesting, though, is that, there was a Midwest couple came from another state that used to live in Oregon.
Starting point is 00:04:29 They were there, I guess, observing that the booth, the Oregon booth was empty. And so they took it upon themselves to just pull up and sit down, and they started telling people about Oregon. And I was thinking, yeah, see, that's the way you do it. You put the partisan division aside and you just talk about Oregon. And that's what this was all about. and Oregon really lost an opportunity, in my opinion, to at least put on its best face. The fact that it was President Trump's presidency is irrelevant. I mean, they still could have gone up there and said,
Starting point is 00:05:07 hey, this is what is going on so great in the state of Oregon. And that would have been a good thing to do. On the other hand, though, I have to say that President Trump doesn't make it easy to look at the fair and the other events from last week through a nonpartisan lens. I understand that. And especially like even the speech on July 4th after the rainstorm broke, it was kind of a rally speech. And yet the right-wing media, of course, I'm a member of the right-wing media here,
Starting point is 00:05:38 I noticed that people were talking about it being the best speech ever. Well, it was a fine rally speech. I just didn't think that it was a unifying July 4th independent. day kind of speech because it was still a lot of the you know the the uh the stock markets never been higher and americans have never had a better deal and this and that the other to me it's um it's when you honor the people who fought and died earlier uh not it's not it's like no matter what president trump does he always tends to go into a rally mode that is about um that was my concern other than that was a great show sometimes you just need to go out there
Starting point is 00:06:21 and say, hey, we honor our founding fathers, let's have a party, yada, yada, yada. I don't know what that is. But, of course, you know, President Trump is always being stung by the cuts of a thousand liberal media. So maybe that's just the way he tends to look at these speech opportunities. But it kind of feeds the, you know, the Oregon claim that, well, it was just all partisan and it wasn't, because it wasn't done completely in a nonpartisan fashion. and I would have hoped that we could have put our differences aside for the 250th, but apparently that is not to be.
Starting point is 00:06:56 Speaking of which, let's see, let's do our communist check-in. Maybe that's going to have to be a daily thing. It's now time for the communist, communist, communist, check-in, check-in, check-in, check-in, check-in. All right, Mom Dani, bemoaning the American experiment on the nation's 250th. This is a quote from him as we mark 200,000. 150 years, what do we see? We see a city of contradictions within a nation of contradictions. We see the wealthiest country and the history of the world, one where children go to sleep
Starting point is 00:07:29 hungry, while the world's first trillionaire hungers for more. We see monopolies that dominate every industry in oligarchs who buy elections. We see masked agents terrorizing our streets, eating food cooked by our undocumented neighbors before spiriting them away and unmarked fans. We see a nation whose immense wealth has been built by those with calloused dirt street tans, those who toil on factory floors and chisel into stone, and we see a nation that has allowed so much of that wealth to be held instead of in the soft hands of a precious view. So that's what he had to say. He also took a swipe at Elon Musk there, too. What else we got going on? So enough about the communist check-in. That's enough for the communist check-in for now. Okay? All right.
Starting point is 00:08:17 Our thanks for you this morning, this Monday morning, huh? 7705-633-770K-M-ED. We have some open phones here for the first hour. Next hour, we're going to be talking a bit about one guest I have who's coming on and is with a food workers union, speaking of which, we're talking about these people making the street food or whatever. But he says that the next border threat is not going to be from the border per se, but from artificial intelligence.
Starting point is 00:08:49 I'm not exactly quite sure how he's trying to tie the two together, but we'll dig into that story next hour. All right, along with your calls and opinion, we'll have a Diner 62 quiz. We'll also be giving away here too. And at the end of the show, the Army Navy Marine Store. We were supposed to have given away a prize on last Thursday,
Starting point is 00:09:11 and I was just so busy. I kind of forgot about it until the very end. It's like, oh, man, gave it away. But what's going to happen? It's at before 9 o'clock. We're going to give away this $60 prize. It is the giveaway is the Rothko Canvas duffel bag with side zipper. It's a rugged military style gear bag.
Starting point is 00:09:31 And this is built for travel and camping and hunting and range days and outdoor adventures made from a heavyweight cotton canvas worth about $60. So pretty good stuff. That's the sort of information and the sort of material that you're going to find there at the the Army Navy Marine store in Central Point. They have over 20,000 items in a 15,000 square foot store. Military surplus and outdoor gear and boots and bags and flags and patches and pins and decals. We need to make this almost into a song, don't we? Make the trip to the Army Navy Marine store.
Starting point is 00:10:01 It's 5100 Crater Lake Avenue in Central Point or shop online at Armynavian.com. You know the moment food shows up. Everyone gathers around and within minutes it's gone. That's the Chick-fil-A effect. Whether it's a cater-team lunch, family... Weekdays, 9-to-noon on 106-3, KMED. Hi, I'm Kelly Bales with Futurdy Retirement Advisors, and I'm on KMED.
Starting point is 00:10:27 625, what is on your mind? It's open phones for the first hour post-July 4th Independence Day weekend. 7705-633. What's your overall thought? I was impressed with the fireworks for sure. I was impressed even more, I think, with the fireworks in my own neighborhood. They were just flying everywhere.
Starting point is 00:10:47 And it seemed that, yeah, we had a few, a few, what do you want to call it? There were a few vegetation fires. We had a few of those. But I feel that we were really blessed here in Southern Oregon because people were having a good time and doing a lot of celebrating. But we didn't seem to have a lot of really serious brush fires and vegetation fires. And I think that that was just wonderful. And, of course, I also think that it's helpful to have great fire crews. standing by and doing their work.
Starting point is 00:11:16 So let me know how it overall was for you. And can anybody explain to me what this really means, this World Cup thing about the red card? So what they penalized are forward, apparently, and then President Trump calls FIFA, and then FIFA says, okay, we'll let him play tonight. Does that work? Is that a good thing or not?
Starting point is 00:11:37 I guess in Belgium, they're just, like, incredibly angry, but in Belgium, they're always angry with us, I think. 770KABD. Crazy Gene, crazy Jean, you started off after the long holiday weekend. What's on your mind today, my friend? Well, I'm thinking about destruction and people dying. Okay, well, hey, thanks a lot for the buzzkill, okay? Well, I got you started the way I want to finish it.
Starting point is 00:12:00 Oh, okay. So what do you mean about the destruction? What's going on? I thought it was the celebratory weekend. What's up? This was back in time a little bit. It was a new madrid's fault line back at a... Back in the middle of part of the country.
Starting point is 00:12:13 Oh, yeah. That was it back in the 1800s, didn't that have a nice big rupture? It was 1811, 1812, and 8.5 vertical that caused the Mississippi River to run backwards. That's true. It did. I did read that in my government school history books then. So why do you bring it up this Monday morning, though? I'm trying to understand.
Starting point is 00:12:36 I just feel like death and destruction is the thing to be right now. nowadays. Okay, now, wait a minute. You are crazy gene, not like, what is it, what do you call him, David from Phoenix? You know, David Phoenix, who, like, is always gloomy. You're not supposed to be that way. Oh, I'm not gloomy. I mean, kind of look forward to it. Give a little activity here. Bortem will be out. All right. Well, good. No boredom, but lots of death and destruction. Good. Great way to start the week. Thank you. All right. No problem. All right. Okay. try to understand this. I don't know. Anyway, good morning. Hi, KMED. Who's this? Yeah, good morning, Bill. This is Terry. Terry, what's going on in your world today? How are
Starting point is 00:13:19 things? It's going good. I had a good fourth. You know, I didn't watch any of that $2.50, any of that, just because we were busy. But you're still talking about unifying speeches. I mean, aren't we over trying to unify the left? I mean, what is the point? No, no, I'm not talking about unifying. Maybe that was a bad... I thought that's sort of what you said. Yeah, it is what I said. But you're right. Here's the deal, though. It really wasn't the time for a campaign speech either. Can you agree with me all that much, you know?
Starting point is 00:13:51 I don't know. You've got to point out where we started from and where we're at right now. And if you don't point out the bad side of people rather than, I don't know. You still got to keep it in people's minds. See, to me, I was looking at celebrating, you know, the amazing history. and I think I would have stuck to that. Not like, you know, it's like the problem is that it sounded like every other Trump speech with the, it was the best, you know, the highest stock market ever, right? You know, all that kind of stuff.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Those are things for a rally. I just don't think of it as a July 4th kind of speech. I was looking for a more, what amazing people that we had to came before us and were standing on them shoulders and we're going to, you know, power through and make it happen. That's kind of what I was thinking, but it's like he does one kind of speech. That's all, you know? That's true. Yeah, I get that. Like I say, it's just, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:14:48 I just, okay, I took it the wrong way. I see what you're saying, though. But yeah, I just thought you said, oh, we need to start unifying again. And it's like, no, that ain't going to work. Yeah, you're right. I know that there are people. And in fact, I'm even going to talk to some people a little bit later this morning. Marla Estes, who, God bless her, is always trying to get the other side, you know, talking with one another, right?
Starting point is 00:15:07 You're always trying to do that. And I think that's just absolutely wonderful what she's trying to do. And I have to tell you, she is like the patron saint of lost causes, I think. But someone's got to do it, you know? Thanks, Bill. Thanks, Terry. Hi, KMED. Good morning.
Starting point is 00:15:25 This is Bill. Who's this? Welcome. Hello. Okay. You got to listen to the phone, not the radio. Anyway, we'll take one more. Hi, KMED.
Starting point is 00:15:38 Good morning. Okay, once again, you know, you have people who are listening to the radio and not the actual phone. Okay, let me grab that. Hi, KM.D., good morning. Okay, I don't know what's going on here. It's an interesting start to the week on the phone world. All right. We'll try one more before news, and then we'll just go to news, and then I'll just talk about other stories.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Hi, KMED, good morning. Morning, Bill. Hey, yeah, it was about that red card. Yeah, what does the red card mean? You know, I know just about enough about soccer just to be completely ignorant of what's going on. Well, me too, Bill. It's not my favorite sport. But I was listening to O'Connor this morning, and he said those red cards are reserved for flagrant fouls, like an intentional.
Starting point is 00:16:29 You know what a flagrant foul is, like in football or basketball or stuff? Like you actually went out there and you pull someone's helmet off, that kind of thing, right? Yeah, like they did to that WMBA game. girl. But I watched the video of it this morning at like 3 o'clock in the morning, and it was completely unintentional. So I think FIFA was correct in rescinding that red flag or red card. Yeah, because supposedly it had to do with him stepping, our forward stepping on the ankle of... They were both running kind of sideways down the field, and he completely unintentionally stepped on the guy's foot, and it twisted his ankle. So, yeah, it wasn't.
Starting point is 00:17:11 like he kicked the guy in and then stomped on his foot. Okay, so that was a reasonable request from the president to? Absolutely. Okay, all right. That's good to know because I wasn't really sure. And I'm hearing like, you know, red card. I'm thinking, okay, it's probably a flag of some sort. I just don't know anything really about this.
Starting point is 00:17:28 Well, I don't know about sports period. You know me. I mean, I'm the one guy that, you know, when the other guys are sitting around having beer, I'm like Lars in that respect. Lars and I are both absolutely clueless about sports. Yeah. But I love watching football, but now it's become so expensive because I'm not going to stream everything out there. You know, it's like $1,500 a year to watch all the football games.
Starting point is 00:17:53 It's like crazy. Are you serious? That's what it's costing now? Really? If you want to watch every game and live and have to stream, every one, it costs like $12 to $1,500 to watch every game. Man. It's almost like you have a. smoking addiction, right? You know? You know what it costs to get a cart in a cigarette these
Starting point is 00:18:13 days when you go to the stores? It's just insane, you know? I don't know. Well, hey, thanks to let me know about what that meant, though, about the red card. So the red card thing is cool. President Trump, President Trump, rather, is fine for weighing in on that. All right. And we'll take one more call before news. Hi, KMEDA. Good morning. Hey, Lauren, what's going on with you? How was the fourth in IgPee, huh? How was that? It was really good. It's the most classic show that I've seen sitting on my curb watching it at the high school here. Oh, that's great.
Starting point is 00:18:46 So that was good. But I got one little kind of like pebble of my shoe that I want to mention there. We had a neighbor two houses down that was setting off mortars and the debris was falling on our roofs. Yikes. Not even not in the middle of the street. You know, you usually go in the middle of the street. It usually gave it. And so it drove us crazy, but it was okay.
Starting point is 00:19:07 Nothing burned, I guess. But I thought it was classic. I thought it was a classic city-sponsored or chambercom-sponsored show. I'm glad you had a great time. I'm glad to hear that. I noticed that I didn't hear a whole lot of fire sirens over the weekend. I didn't see a lot of response. I know they had a couple of homes in Josephine County that ended up taking what they thought was fireworks damage.
Starting point is 00:19:34 It was like one truck that was caught on fire. Are you aware of anything in Eagle Point? in your neighborhood. I didn't see much in my neighborhood, actually burning. I had my scanner on. I did not hear any calls out here. I was surprised. That's great. It was good. It was a good classic kind of time, and 250 years is a time to celebrate, that's for sure. Absolutely. Absolutely. Glad it worked out well. Good to hear from you. Thank you. Have a great day. Thank you, Lauren. It is 634 at KMED. We'll catch up on the rest of the news, too, for that matter. And then more of your calls on, well, anyway, post-fire cracker.
Starting point is 00:20:07 a Monday, huh? 770 KMED. An intelligent solution weighs the options. This is Randall at Advanced Air. When replacing your air conditioner, furnace, or heat pump, you want... When you text DFS to 26786 or visit DFSfireworks.com for your free fireworks offer.
Starting point is 00:20:23 Celebrate 250 years of freedom, family, and fireworks with discount fireworks superstore. This is News Talk 1063 KMED, and you're waking up with the Bill Myers Show. 770-56333. open phones here for the first hour.
Starting point is 00:20:39 And they were going to be talking about AI and border and wages and a bunch more. Actually, the person I have coming up here, I've never had the opportunity of speaking to this person. His name is Alejandro Martinez, and he runs the National Food and Commerce Unit, or Union rather, or SNAC. It is Mexico's, Mexico's leading labor union. and it represents workers in the commerce and the food sector. And I guess this has to do with what to do about the USMC or the trade agreement, the Trump trade agreement from the last administration, you know, 2016, when he put that in. And President Trump says he's not going to renew that.
Starting point is 00:21:25 And what Alejandro is talking about is that what he's hoping is that they'll renew that with new protections and considerations on artificial, intelligence. Okay. All right. 7705-633-7-7-O-K-M-E-D. Oh, by the way, you know, after a long holiday weekend, I just thought I would mention is that I've noticed that there are a couple of people who are trying to call this morning that are blocking caller IDs. If you block caller IDs, you cannot get through. And so you have to have a legit phone number to get through. It does keep the trolley-the-trolliness down. So just so you know, those are the rules, especially when you don't have a alcohol scorer.
Starting point is 00:22:06 Okay, all right. All right. It's an interesting story I was reading over the holiday weekend because I've noticed that a lot of people are saying where the Trump administration has been going wrong is that they've just been doing too much deportation. Too much deporting, too much deporting, and of course we're hearing this mostly from a lot of blue hive mind states,
Starting point is 00:22:27 like you'll hear this from Oregon. But is that necessarily true? there are even people on the libertarian side of things who I respect in many ways, but they tend to look at the border as something that, well, shouldn't exist. And, you know, there are no such things as illegal people, you know, those kind of people. And I'll like their way of looking at things, but I'm just listening to the libertarian border arguments and just thinking it's just total nonsense in which they tend to express. it in a way of racist, only racist
Starting point is 00:23:05 illiterates want all these people deported. That was one blogger that I was reading over the week. I was mentioning racist illiterates, wanting the immigration law actually followed. Right? That's kind of how it was characterized. And that was disappointing. It's like, oh, wow, okay, you want, so enforcing
Starting point is 00:23:29 immigration law. So we let people who just come here jump in front of people who are trying to follow the rules. I just never understood that concept. Well, there was a new poll that came out over the weekend. This is a Harvard Harris online poll. Now, it was on
Starting point is 00:23:45 MSN news here. Trump's immigration policies in particular continue to earn broad support even from non-Republicans. This is an interesting poll. It was happening near the end of May that they put this poll out. It included 1,725 registered voters.
Starting point is 00:24:07 It's actually a pretty good-sized poll for a national poll. More than half. 56% of respondents expressed support for arguably Trump's signature 2024 campaign pledge, the largest deportation operation in history. Meanwhile, deporting illegal immigrants who commit additional crimes while, in the United States received once again massive bipartisan support.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Massive bipartisan. This is not just a Republican deal. 90% of Republicans approved along with 77% of independents and 71% of Democrats. Overall, 80% of respondents said that they agreed. And one Harvard Harris subheading told the story, most Trump policies received majority support
Starting point is 00:24:55 with lowering drug prices, deporting criminal illegal immigrants, in cutting government waste the most popular. In fact, the pollster tested a total of 21 Trump policies. Only two got below 50%. Hiring an additional 20,000 border patrol and ICE agents to do immigration rates, that got only 47% support overall, 74% from Republicans. So in other words, it appears that even Democrats want illegal immigrants deported,
Starting point is 00:25:27 but I guess they wanted to be done nicely. And they wanted to be done nicely with no must and no fuss. What do you think about that? Do you agree with that particular poll? Do you want it to only be just the criminals, or do you want them all gone? Let me know about that, okay? 646, you're on the Bill Myers Show.
Starting point is 00:25:50 What's on your bucket list? At Grange Co-op, we're making it easier than ever to check things off. July 6ku Pump.com. The Bill Myers Show is on. News Talk 1063 KMED. What a touch in some more emails of the day. Sponsored by Dr. Steve Nelson in Central Point Family Dentistry.com. Central Point Family Dentistry.com.
Starting point is 00:26:13 And it's just a really interesting time. You know, someone actually reminded me, they called me over the weekend and just want to say, Bill, you talked about them using a lathe or something like that to do the, you know, the, what do they call them, the crowns? Because I've had several crowns done by Central Point Family Dentistry. It's really probably a CNC milling machine. And you know, you're absolutely right. I was calling it like a lathe because I would see the little drill thing going around.
Starting point is 00:26:38 But yeah, it's really interesting. Dr. Steve will actually let you watch a machine. It's pretty cool because, you know, have a few minutes wait time after they prep your tooth and then they show you what's going on. It's an amazing machine, what they do with that super hard material now there. I don't know what it's like titanium, magnesium dioxide. I don't know. But anyway, they do a really good job on that.
Starting point is 00:27:01 Get your appointment today at Central Point Family Dentistry.com. It's on Freeman Road right next to the Mazadlaan Mexican restaurant. The Reverend David writes me this morning about Mamdani. Mamdani's speech over the weekend and says, Hey, Bill, the mayor of New York's statement for Independence Day was a joke. If I am not mistaken, the mayor's family is filthy rich. Maybe he should, as the old saying goes, put his money where his mouth is. And yes, in other words, he's incredibly privileged but is crying poor, right?
Starting point is 00:27:31 Barbara writes me this morning and says, Bill, I was so privileged to attend the reading of the Declaration of Independence at the courthouse in Josephine County. The people in attendance understood what this year's celebration meant. I've attended many in previous years, and it always brings a tear to my eye to remember what sacrifice our founding fathers made. I was upset to find out that at Riverside Park, there was a no-kings protest. I just really hate this country. I was even more disturbed by Mondani's address sitting at George Washington's desk. You know, people are so spoiled, they don't really appreciate the freedoms they do have. I'm glad that it was pretty quiet for you.
Starting point is 00:28:09 Actually, it got really noisy on Saturday night, though. Barb, it really was, Barbara. It was incredible, though. but it was it was kind of funny with the neighborhood fireworks i was surprised because on friday friday the third you know normally when we have these uh you know july fourth holiday weekends of sorts the booming and the real uh festivity start even a day before july fourth and i was wondering well gosh you know um on friday night it was relatively modest yeah there were some booms and bust and some fireworks going off but we were wondering if uh got
Starting point is 00:28:47 are they just saving it all up for July 4th? Or are they maybe pulling their horns in? Because the fireworks are not inexpensive. It's something you really have to commit to. And yes, I know there's discount fireworks and great sponsor in there. And they're doing great discounts right now. That's wonderful things. But still overall, it's not cheap to go out there and do a big fireworks display, right?
Starting point is 00:29:12 And I thought maybe people were pulling their horns in. And then Saturday night came. Man, it was like lit up that fire. That sky was lit up in my neighborhood. I walked outside and all you can smell, all you can smell in the air. And I'm sure the DEQ was probably going to put out a warning today. Be careful. Don't go outside anytime they have fireworks because there was so much fireworks smoke in the neighborhood.
Starting point is 00:29:41 It smelled, well, you know, it's that smell of when we were kids and we had cap guns. There's that specific smell. I don't know what that smell is, but we all know it when you smell it. And it was just like all over, just hanging in the air. I loved it. I love that smell for some reason, just like I like the smell of gasoline and diesel, too, which makes me kind of weird, I guess. But yeah, that worked out pretty well.
Starting point is 00:30:03 All right. What do we have here? Bill, this is probably, oh, yeah, this is the person who told me about the CNC milling machine. Yeah, John. It was John. It told me that. Thank you very much, John. and I appreciate that.
Starting point is 00:30:17 Let's see. Dale writes me, Bill, many years ago, our house was set on fire along with the fence in a neighbor's house because someone in the neighborhood was firing off bottle rockets all day into the night. I can tell you there is nothing like going to bed at 11 o'clock only to find the end of your home on fire, and it took me with the garden hose and finally the fire department over an hour to put the fire out in ours and the neighbor's house.
Starting point is 00:30:41 Many years after that, our older son was living in a apartment, building in Central Point, which was set on fire by a firecracker in a bush next to our one ground floor apartment. Several apartments were burned with our sons being used by the fire department as access to others. The smoke damage alone made his apartment unlivable. As a child, I was taught by my parents to treat all fireworks as possible causes for fire or loss of body parts. And believe me, I did enjoy firecrackers, torpedoes, and the Roman candles a lot. But from the time I was five years old, I always tried to use them responsibly and never cause a problem other than noise.
Starting point is 00:31:21 Dale, I appreciate that. And it does look like, you know, people kind of did that this weekend, Dale. There weren't a whole lot of fires. And the fires that did seem to occur here in Southern Oregon. Yeah, there was the fire on the truck in Josephine County in the driveway, you know, that was kind of, you know, dramatic. a little bit, but I think overall the crews really got down it, down on it, I should say, and they were really ready.
Starting point is 00:31:49 And I think that worked out really well. I think we were pretty blessed. We had a great time. A great time. Okay. Let's see. Elaine writes me this morning, Bill, anyone not concerned about the communist movement in America doesn't seem to know world history. Stalin, Lenin, Hitler. The conservatives aren't talking enough about the destruction of Congress. I would agree with you, Elaine.
Starting point is 00:32:15 I know that we're being told, oh, it's just like this. You know, you're going through this red scare just like the 1950s. I don't know. When you have the communists openly talking about taking people stuff in the redistribution of wealth, and I kind of take them seriously at it myself, Elaine. I appreciate your writing, okay? And Bob wrote me about moving July 4th to December. We were talking about that a little bit.
Starting point is 00:32:45 There's a song, Christmas in July, so if that's the thing, let's go ahead with Patrick's plan to move Independence Day to December. I'll write the song and start collecting my fireworks. It would be an easy switch. Yeah, in which you just have all the fireworks of the world and everything's wet. And you don't worry about the smoke or the fire or anything else going on. That'd be funny. 657, the email
Starting point is 00:33:07 Bill of Gilmire's show.com. Hi, KM&E. Good morning. Welcome to the show. Who's this? Yeah, that's Al on the Applegate. Hey, Al. How are things with you today? How to work for you over the weekend? I just, you know, the Applegate, every year, there's a little noise,
Starting point is 00:33:21 a little something, you know, it shouldn't be happening. And this year there was nothing. I was really surprised. I'm really pleased that people, you know, control themselves and didn't shoot anything off up there. Yeah, the Applegate is especially, especially tender bone dry right now, isn't it? Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 00:33:38 And you were just talking about, you know, Fourth of July and December, and that's exactly why I was calling it. I think it's a brilliant idea to sell all the fireworks, bottle rockets, the whole nine yards, and, you know, the week before Christmas and then just have at it on New Year's Eve and make a real big deal.
Starting point is 00:33:57 The kids have a good time. It doesn't matter if it's cold. I've gone out and shot off and gross on New Year's Eve before, you know. It's a perfect time. There's nothing going to happen. And kids are just the ball. It doesn't matter if it's a fork in some life. Yeah, you wouldn't worry about it because traditionally it's pretty wet during that time of year around here.
Starting point is 00:34:15 It would be cool and things. That would be wonderful. I think it's an interesting idea. Maybe we'll just pose that to the Southern Oregon jury. Would you actually be okay with it? Because I'm surprised how many people wrote me saying that they actually like that idea of moving the holiday itself just out of a sense of, hey, let's have our fireworks, have nobody complaining. about it. No one's going to worry about it, even if it falls on your roof. So what? It's wet. You know, big deal, right?
Starting point is 00:34:39 Yeah. And it's not Independence Day, but it's New Year's Eve and everybody, you know, shoots off fireworks or shoots your guns or anything better than shooting your rifle off, you know, and the years of Eve. Gosh, you know, you just reminded me, my father used to do that, New Year's Eve. He would go out in the, in the backyard. And we were in a pretty rural area. There was nobody behind us. But he'd shoot off a musket. is what he did. He made muskets, and he would make these muskets. In fact, I still have one of the pistols that he made back when I was a kid. And he would make it. He had great fun. Now, I don't think he didn't put any, he didn't put a musket ball in there. He just shot it off. They ended up being like a blank, you know, is what it was. But yeah, he'd go out in the back when it was New Year's, boom. And there's nothing quite like black powder rifles going off, the noise and the smoke from that. It was something. A lot of fun. I think it's all that much safer to be shooting off fireworks in town on July 4th,
Starting point is 00:35:41 and it is out the rural area. There's still a lot of dry grass and things that can catch on fire, and we know what happens when one building catches fires, the next one down the road. Yeah, well, all I can say is that fortunately they were setting them off all around us, but we didn't have any problems. I saw everybody with their wet buckets and their hoses as they were doing their thing down the street so they were looking out for um but of course those people down the street around
Starting point is 00:36:09 me were using the safe and saying they weren't you know setting off the mortars i don't know what the people who were setting off the mortars on the east side i don't know what they were doing but they probably wouldn't have had a hose large enough to be able to cover the area so point well taken all right all right you too it's seven o'clock this is km ed and km ed hd1 eagle point Medford, KBXG grants pass.
