Starting point is 00:01:23 but he really didn't discover America, as we know it now. He discovered the Caribbean. And he was an Italian guy, which is why, at least on the East Coast, Columbus Day is revered by many Italian Americans. But Chris Columbus worked for the king and queen of Spain. So Ferdinand and Isabella, they paid Columbus, they outfitted his ships, they sent him on his way to find gold. They wanted money because they were fighting the Moors, the Spanish throne, needed money to wage war. And they thought Chris could bring it back from the New World, but they didn't really know about the New World. They thought he was going to Asia. And then when Chris landed in the Bahamas, he thought he was in the Orient, but he wasn't. And he was facing some hostile
Starting point is 00:02:17 Indian tribes in the Caribbean. And therein lies the controversy of Christopher. Columbus. Did he brutalize the Indians? I don't know. There's no reporting on it. None. There's one letter written by Christopher Columbus himself. It's in the Vatican Museum. I have not seen it. They shut it down. So I don't know whether Christopher Columbus was a villain.
