One is in the past, the other in the present. One is the possession of the rich legacy of memories. The other is the desire to live together and to value the common heritage. I love that. We're an evil, racist, horrible country that was founded on slavery and fought our independence from England to maintain the slave trade and we've never recovered it

anyway super and we teach our kids this so would you say people today value our common heritage no renan said a heroic past with great men and glory is the social capital upon which the national idea rests these are the essential conditions of being a people that is having common glories in the past and a will to continue them in the present, having made great things together and wishing to make them again. That's our job then, where most people are interested in tearing down the past, make sure that the great Americans of our past are common glories are known and celebrated and continued on in your family.
