Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here. Thursday, April 1st, 2021. You are listening to the O'Reilly update. Here's what's happening across our nation. President Biden calling for $2 trillion in new taxes. Border crossings projected to top $1 million this year. Hawaii, considering COVID-vax passports for visitors. America's death rate jumping 16%. The contagion causing more chaos in Europe. Unbelievable over there. Also, I had disorder sweeping over American cities. It's bad. But first, the White House unveiling heavy new taxes to help finance President Biden's spending spree. The plan would raise corporate rates from 21 to 28 percent and some income tax rates to 39.6 percent. The hikes will generate $1.8 trillion, less than half of the $5 trillion added to the national debt since the president
Starting point is 00:01:03 was inaugurated. So hold onto your wallets. Border officials saying more than a million undocumented migrants will arrive at the southern border this year alone, most of whom will be allowed into the USA. More than 100,000 people make the crossing every month. That figure can double during the summer. Vice President Harris was appointed border czar more than a week ago, but has been very quiet on the subject. Lawmakers in Honolulu working to implement a vaccine passport for travelers coming into the islands. The app would allow visitors to bypass mandatory quarantines and other restrictions. Wai is one of the lowest number of COVID cases in the country, but the contagion has decimated the tourist industry.
Starting point is 00:01:53 there. The death rate in the USA, rising 16% between 2019-20, COVID, the cause of 11% of all the fatalities in this country. According to the CDC, the virus has infected 30 million Americans, killed 550,000 since the pandemic began last February. Demonstrations taking place in countries all across Europe as vaccine rollouts stall in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, French president, Macron, ordering a nationwide lockdown for the next four weeks to help hospitals cope with demand. About 15% of residents in the EU have been inoculated compared to half of the British population. In a moment, there are some very bad things happening in this country, unfortunately. Disorder at the top of the list. Right back with it.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Let's face it, the U.S. economy is under stress. National debt rising, trade war, shaking the markets. And meanwhile, China is dumping the dollar and stockpiling gold. In many liberal-run cities, laws are not being enforced. We'll tell you why in a moment.
Starting point is 00:04:10 The law enforcement community is in chaos, and the rise in violent crime is obviously hurting thousands of Americans a week. In Chicago, murders have jumped more than 50 percent compared with 2019, and that was a terrible year. Shooting's up 50 percent as well. In Los Angeles, a 30 percent increase in murders over the previous year. In New York City, homicides are up 40 percent. shootings up 125 in the Big Apple. Houston, murder rate up 42%. Now, the lower-level crimes, like selling drugs, assault, trespass, disorderly conduct, many of those in places like New York, L.A. and Chicago, are being ignored by authorities. So even when the cops take somebody in charging them with
Starting point is 00:05:14 assault, the prosecutors dropped the case. Well, that emboldens criminals, who then up the ante, especially the drug gangs. So they go out selling their narcotics, they're armed with guns. In New York and Chicago, these gangs literally shoot thousands of people. Even if the cops arrest the gang members for illegal gun possession, many judges put them out right on the street. No bail. In fact, there's a law in New York that says most crimes, you cannot hold the alleged criminal. It's insane. And right after the no bail was signed by Governor Cuomo, crime shot through the roof, pardon the pun. Now, the reason all this is happening is social justice and restorative justice. Let's take social justice first.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Far left people believe that marginalized communities, people of color, others who have been persecuted in the past, are not to be held responsible for what they do today. So, if you're an African American or a Hispanic American and you shoot somebody, it's not as bad as if you were a Caucasian American. You need to be cut some slack because your ancestors might have been slaves, and your upbringing might have been deprived. That's the mentality on the progressive left. Restorative justice is a theory by you don't punish the criminal by putting him or her in prison,
Starting point is 00:07:15 you let them do restitution. That's restorative justice. But that never works because many, perhaps most hardcore criminals, simply are not going to do restitution. So if you don't incarcerate them, they're going to go out and do more bad stuff. disorder is plaguing this country. Now the O'Reilly Update brings you something you might, Not no. April Fool's Day celebrated more than 50 countries around the world. I wouldn't do that in China for obvious reasons. This year, major corporations like Google and Facebook are ditching the
Starting point is 00:08:50 pranks because of COVID. Now, believe it or not, the Fool's tradition goes back centuries. In 1582, Many Europeans switched over from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. New Year's Day went from April 1st to January 1st because of the switch in calendars. Now, some villagers who didn't get the memo still celebrated New Year's on April 1st. The educated nobles mocked the locals as foolish. In France, the nobles would leave paper figurines of fish on doorsteps as a joke suggesting the resident inside was a gullible person. So that's how April Fool's Day came about. Fast forward a few hundred years, the holiday has created some pretty incredible pranks. In 1957, the BBC reported that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record,
Starting point is 00:09:55 spaghetti crop. Camera crews even filmed the locals harvesting noodles from trees across the Alps. In 1992, National Public Radio claimed Richard Nixon was considering another run for the White House. The segment took the country by surprise, making its way to the nightly news on many major networks. An actor depicting Richard Nixon promised voters, I never did anything wrong, and I won't do it again. Four years later, fast food chain Taco Bell duped people when it announced it had agreed to purchase Philadelphia's famed Liberty Bell and planned to rename it the Taco Liberty Bell. And here's something else you might not know.
Starting point is 00:10:44 April Fool's Day sparks panic for millions of Americans suffering from farceophobia, the fear of practical jokes. 15% of us say April Fool's Day causes anxiety, lack of sleep. And that's not an April Fool's Dispatch. It's true. Back after this. Hey, I'm Caitlin Becker, the host of the New York Postcast, and I've got exactly what you need to start your weekdays.
